Guest Writers This month we are very fortunate to have input from several guest writers, one of whom has already advertised with us and the others are all therapists in their own right. Elaine Thompson I have had the pleasure of knowing Elaine for many years and owe her a huge debt of gratitude as it was she who helped me come to terms with all the fantastic changes I was experienced as I set out on my path into the age of Aquarius. She taught me so much about me as a person and about meditation, healing, working with crystals and lots more. As a musician I became fascinated with Elaine’s work that uses sound as a healing tool and I regard her contribution to the pages of Connect North Devon as a testimony to our friendship and the publishing of her article is the least I can do to go some way to saying thank you for all the teaching through the years. William Pickersgill Better known to me as Billy he is responsible for providing the information that relates to the useful benefits of honey. I knew that Billy was a person of great depth from the moment that I first met him, but little did I know then just how deep he was. He is a kind, generous person who has been gifted with skills in the culinary arts and on my first visit to his home he was busy preparing a wedding buffet for some 70 - 80 people and yet he still made time to sit and chat. Over time I have learned that Billy is a healer, a great listener and above all, a wonderful friend. Peter Whitehart - as yet I have not had the pleasure of meeting Peter in person but having spoken to him on Facebook and via email I have a great respect for the work that he does in the field of Gong Bath meditations.

Letter from Linda Hello Readers The more I learn the more amazed I am at the rich and varied life we have living inside our bodies, the world of bacteria, without which we could not live. But as in all things there is good and bad. The bad, being Pathogens, cause a lot of toxic waste which damages beneficial flora and can lead to all kinds of health problems. Healthy gut flora provides nourishment and energy for the lining of the digestive tract. A fungus such as Candida Albicans, Pathogens. Parasites and toxic substances can damage our digestive system and cause inflammation in its walls. Ubiquitous micro organs have always lived inside us, in a healthy body they are controlled by beneficial bacteria , but as good bacteria is destroyed then the bad become a terrible enemy, this is when Candida becomes invasive and grows stringy hyphae and puts roots through the tissues of the body, digestive system and other internal organs, causing all kinds of toxic substances to play havoc with our health. According to recent research candida overgrowth has been connected to most chronic degenerative disorders. Cleansing and healing the gut is paramount to aiding our detoxification system. Consider the amount of toxic chemicals in our food from agricultural chemicals, meat and milk from animals given antibiotices and other drugs, alcohol and tobacco, chemicals in processed food, care and cleaning products........... the list is endless! Our detoxification system is overloaded, making it easy for Candida Albicans and Pathogens to thrive. Dr Natasha Campbell – McBride explains it in her book Gut and Psychology Syndrome Juicing is a very beneficial way of cleansing our system, Dr Gerson and Dr Norman Walker both advocate juicing and use it in the treatment of their patients. Hundreds of scientific studies have been published on the benefits of raw, fresh vegetable and fruit juicing providing goodness in large amounts. Many people feel unwell without knowing why. It is often through an overload of toxic substances from bad bacteria/ Some of the effects experienced are chronic fatigue, confusion, lack of concentration, anxiety, stress and depression to name but a few. A chance of diet is sometimes all it needs to be a healthy, active human being and juicing, without a doubt, is an excellent way of achieving this. So I would like to wish good health and happiness to you all. Bye for now,

Linda. Ref: Dr Natasha Campbell- McBride B: Always ask your doctors advice before starting a diet or taking any tablets.

Sound Gong Bath provides regular gong baths meditations for groups of people at public venues in the South West of England. If you haven’t experienced a gong bath, its name could seem misleading. But it’s actually very descriptive. Practitioner Peter Whiteheart explains: “There’s no water involved and no clothes removed – you are bathed, but in sound waves with the gongs played in a therapeutic way to bring about healing. All you have to do is lie comfortably on crash mats that I supply and close your eyes and relax. (You will need to bring a pillow and blanket). I begin by playing the gongs very softly, gradually increasing the volume as the session progresses. I change the playing technique frequently so there is no fixed rhythm: this result in entrainment; the changing of brainwave frequencies. After a while you will most likely enter a dreamlike, deep meditative state. After a continuous 50 minutes of gong playing, I start to wind down and play very gently for ten minutes fading away to nothing. I then gently bring the group back with small tingling bells and my heart sounding bowl, I then hand out bottles of spring water, I find this to be essential after a gong bath. I always try to keep a silent period at the end, this can be an awkward silence for some, but I think it has its place; most people have had a healing experience during the gong bath and a silence at the end is needed. So what are the benefits of a gong bath? “Everyone's experience is different and unique. The gong bath is very good at relieving pain and stress and promotes deep sleep. Most report an out of body experience, with vivid like dreams and a deep relaxing and calm state. After a gong bath you may feel very relaxed and chilled out – and this can often last for many days.” The gong bath is very good at altering are state of Consciousness, are daily awaken state is called Beta, a relaxed state is called Alpha, a deeply relaxed meditative state is theta and a sleep state is delta. The gong bath tends to take you to a mid alpha theta state, so not only is dreams present there is also a lot of brain chemistry going on, sodium and potassium level are reset, because after an extended period in the beta state the ratio between potassium and sodium tend to be out of balance. It only takes a brief period in theta (5 to 15 min) to bring the ratios back to normal, resulting in mental refreshment Here is some feedback from a client. I have been going to Pete’s gong baths for over a year now, so I think that says a million words. It has an unfathomable sense about it, and each and everyone has their own story to tell. For me it hasn’t just been a place to lie down and relax for an hour. I have been thrown into past experiences, experiencing these through my body not just my mind... this has enabled a healing to take place and a letting go of old pains. It brings attention to blockages I haven’t been able to access before. The gong bath hasn’t always been a pleasant experience, sometimes feelings of panic, chest constriction, and muscle pain, but somehow the sound holds you and realigns my physical being. I often feel very open and need to rest afterwards to allow any processing to take place. And usually I have very good deep sleep for the next few nights with lots of dream activity, which brings clarity and a feeling of well being. Call 01884 258764 or visit www.sound-gong-bath.co.uk. 6

Sound TherapyUK….a revolution in the way we deal with our health and wellbeing. Elaine Thompson GHSC: GHR reg talked to me about Sound Therapy after her appearance on Sky TV recently. When I spoke to her I was amazed at how simple this concept is, and yet we don’t really think about it as being beneficial for our health, and certainly not being able to dramatically help with serious diseases! Did you know that your voice represents your emotional and physical health? Of course you did! Everyone knows that your voice changes when you don’t feel well, or are fed up and a bit depressed or miserable. You can tell by the sound of someone’s voice when they are not their usual self. We all get like this now and again, and when you have been ill for a while, you may not even notice that your voice is not the same as it used to be. But you certainly know that your health isn’t what it used to be, don’t you? Everyone has a happy cheery place that shows in their voice when they are feeling tip top and full of bounce. You feel excited, happy to be alive, upbeat and cheerful, and people can tell, because your face and voice say it all. Would you like to be able to change your ill health to better health, and really feel it in your voice and body? To have people say to you -’Wow, you sound good today, you must be feeling better!’ Well, you can! Elaine was telling me that everyone has an individual voice pattern. Illness in the body or mind creates different sounding voice patterns, and feeling great and in good health has a pattern too – it looks very balanced and strong. To someone who knows what voice patterns mean, finding a problem and a solution is easy……and this is what Sound Therapy is all about. You can watch a short video at www.facebook.com/soundtherapyuk on how she helped people with Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Back Pain, and Stroke Paralysis, or you can go to www.soundtherapyuk.com for more information. So what exactly is Sound Therapy? This is what Elaine had to say You know that Sound is everywhere. To get technical about it, all Sounds have a Frequency or number of Hertz that can be measured and translated. In fact, Sound is a Universal Language. Friction and movement create sound, and as your body moves and your mind thinks, it resonates inside with sounds generated by your physical and chemical makeup. That’s a very cool and interesting thought, isn’t it? And guess what? – Your mind and body respond not only to your thoughts, but everything that happens with other people too. All those emotional situations we get ourselves into? …..it’s all being taken on board and responded to by you…..but you knew that, didn’t you? What you eat, think, feel, and how you respond, are all part of your daily makeup. You change all the time, depending on where you are, what the situation is, and whether you are happy with it or not. But some situations and thoughts are long term and don’t change, and this makes a rut that is hard to get out of. So whether it’s long term or new, this daily collection of thoughts and actions effect you inside, creating sounds that alter your body chemistry and are heard in the tone your voice. Makes sense, doesn’t it? If you have a healthy mind and body, it shows. Your voice will be strong and colourful, charismatic and compelling. All the body systems that you use for digestion, breathing, elimination, repair, and fighting diseases have their own ‘band width’ of sound. When you start to examine the really small details, all your body chemicals, muscles and organs have their own precise and specific frequency, and so does every virus and bacteria!

When you are weak in a certain area or system, it’s because you are not generating healthy sounds there. In fact, there may well be an emotional reason why you positively avoid it! Have you ever thought about the way you think? ‘You make me sick ‘, ‘I can’t stomach it any more’, ‘she’s such a pain in the neck’ ……. and here the clue is in the words. Usually the person who thinks these kinds of stressful thoughts will have problems with their digestion, have stomach ulcers, neck pains or some closely related health problem. So what problems can I work with? Almost anything can be helped with Sound Therapy, as the main aim is to bring healthy balance back to both the mind and body systems...no matter what the problem is. Let’s start off with a tough one. So many people these days seem to know someone, or be involved with a loved one who has the symptoms of Dementia. If you go to my website (see below) you can take a look at a short story of someone I was able to really help in a dramatic way, who had Clinical Dementia. I asked her what other health problems can Sound Therapy work with, and the list is amazing! Sound has been used to help clients with a vast number of different disorders and problems, including: •

Allergies of all kinds

Behavioural problems

Obsessive compulsive disorder

Phobias

Emotional Trauma

She went on to say that all living things, including you, are made up of millions of frequencies. Your body is making inaudible sounds all the time. Your body resonates inside with sounds generated by your physical and chemical makeup – and responds to external input from people, emotional situations and both lower and higher frequencies in the air. Every single thing in our world vibrates at a certain pitch. You think you don’t hear it but your body registers everything. Sound is both a particle and a wave and your brain knows it as an information package. It tells you when a vibration is something good, bad or neutral. Think about this: Every chemical in your body has its own frequency. Every system, such as digestive, respiratory, endocrine and circulatory has its own governing place in the scale of musical notes. Every vertebrae has its own sound, and so does every muscle, nerve and ligament. Every Muscle has its own frequency. So if you don’t generate enough B, C or C# in your voice, you could develop a weakness in your arms, wrists or hands, depending on your personal makeup! Examples of governing musical notes related to your body. C# governs fertility, mucous membranes, inflammation in the joints and tendons, and much more. Can’t get pregnant? You are not generating enough C# in your body! Got arthritis, swollen joints, cysts, fibroids or infection? Too much C#! G and G# govern the functions of the brain and the chemicals that are held there. Are you a worrier, can’t get to sleep because you can’t stop thinking? Too much G and G#! If you have apathy and depression – not enough G and G#. Kidney, bladder or prostate problems? The answer lies in the note of F. Musical notes govern different systems in the body and they also govern emotions, but each person will have their own emotional traumas attached to a different note. This is why we are all so different, and why we all get different health problems. This is also why some people catch colds easily and others don’t, and why some children get very bad reactions to Vaccines and others don’t. It depends where your strength or weakness lies in the musical scale generated within your voice. Every part of your body including each vertebra in the spine has its own frequency which is very handy for solving back problems! Everything that you eat has its own frequency. Every thought you think and every emotion you feel has its own frequency. Every chemical you eat, whether by choice or mistake, has its own frequency. You become what you eat and what you think. Your food affects your health and your emotions. Elaine has been a practitioner and trainer for the last twenty years in the UK and has pioneered the way forward with this work. So if you want to ask a question, or find out more about this revolutionary therapy go to www.soundtherapyuk.com , www.facebook.com/soundtherapyuk, or contact Elaine on info@soundtherapyuk.com 12

2012 and Beyond…………A Conversation with Valery L Coburn I hear many saying ‘where on earth has this year gone?’ well indeed; it has gone in a flash hasn’t it? Seemingly faster and faster as life speeds by and we have surely seen so much flash before us this year. So maybe to ask some questions of ourselves about this year might be interesting, provoke a deeper understanding of the why’s and wherefore’s, then allow a place to be arrived at where gratitude is given? For 2012 was and still is a major test for some, although I think much has been asked of us all. I come back to the one word which rings out so loud and clear about this year, it is authenticity. With that in mind why not ask yourself some questions, my suggestions are below; How did 2012 serve us? Did it meet our hopes and dreams? Were we able to let go of all that no longer serves us? Were we able to reach a greater sense of wellbeing and contentment? Are we moving toward 2013 with hope and excitement in our hearts? It really can be a challenge to move beyond all the doom and gloom that can fill our lives. Times are hard and in some ways looking to maybe get a little harder yet. But everything I believe comes down to our own perception and interpretation. What we then choose to act upon and is the glass half full or half empty? The major uplift we all experienced this year began with the Jubilee celebrations and went on to the awe inspiring Olympic Games, we must not forget that high euphoria and let it become just a memory. Much was spoken about what the legacies would be as a result of the games, you may recall. I would like to share with you the legacy as it sits with me? My heart was moved so many times over this summer by so many things. I cried more times than I care to remember at the achievements made through selfless dedication and focus to a sport, most of which I had previously no interest in at all. ot only by the Paralympians whose triumph over adversity was above and beyond what I personally could ever imagine would be possible. But by all our British men and women athletes who expressed openly and with so much passion their appreciation at being British. I cried with others who won medals and who displayed such pride in themselves their sport and their nation. I cried with absolute unashamed joy at the spectacle displayed for the whole world to see at our opening and closing ceremonies. I sat in awe and total wonder at the minds that had created it all, at all of the volunteers who had simply wanted to be there, to be a part, to have their own stories to tell as a result, to generations to come. The whole extravaganza was to leave me with lasting memories, and legacies I can now interpret for myself. For surely life is but a mirror, reflecting back at us all that is? In that mirror we are shown, how stoic we can be, just how strong and resilient, overcoming adversity and any obstacle put in our way. We are shown we are not ‘the story’ we are a result of it. We are shown where opportunities lie and taking chances can lead. We recognised in others, places inside them where maybe a part of us lay hidden. As a result we knew in our heart of hearts that everything is possible, and that we can achieve whatever we choose and then act upon it. As someone who has come to terms with living with a condition that has somewhat disabled me, I know that I am not that condition, it is not who I am. 2012 therefore, and all it held, served to inspire, uplift and ignite sparks in me that continue to flicker. Sometimes the spark will grow a little dimmer, sometimes even be blown out, it is then I know that I have a choice, to stay in the dark or to re-ignite that flame. Life it is said was not meant to be easy but it was meant to be embraced, held and explored. What costs little or nothing often holds the greatest gifts. To awake each day and say thank you for another gift, this brand new day that you hold in your heart and hands, is ‘Gods’ gift to you. For it is in this present, this present moment that another opportunity will come. Gratitude for life itself is a glorious practice to adopt. Living in our body as we do we take all of its functions mostly for granted? Give thanks for all you’ve been given and rejoice in the legacies life has left you. Look inside, look into your heart, feel in your heart, speak from your heart, love from your heart and boundless gifts will be unwrapped before your very eyes. 2013 beckons us all, look forward from your heart, stay connected in your heart. I ask that 2013 to be the year for us all that we enter with courage, love, faith, hope and peace, in the full knowledge that coming from that sacred place all will be given. With Boundless Blessings and Abundant Love

Verity – The Angel of the South? Sarah Canty - Arts and Entertainment So what’s happened in the world of art and entertainment in the South West recently? The biggest stir has to be that of the arrival of Damien Hirst’s Verity – his 66ft bronze statue that is a modern day allegory of truth and justice. The arrival of this bronze beauty has split this coastal town in two, but love her or hate her she is here to stay. This is my interpretation of his masterpiece, and how her arrival has affected me personally. As a lover of modern art, I was thrilled when they announced that our historic town was to become her home for the next twenty years. Having something so prominent in a town that has been in the limelight for all the wrong reasons in recent years seemed to appeal to me. It was bound to have a positive effect and my instincts served me true. Coming from a hectic midlands town where not many people had heard of Ilfracombe until I moved down here, it was nice to hear them and their friends talking about this spectacular harbour town, but there was always one main word mentioned – Verity. She has made this Victorian town one of the main nerves of the modern art system. People are flocking from all over the country, the continent and the world to lay their eyes on this truly majestic statue and I don’t blame them. So, why is she the modern day allegory of truth and justice? Well, the obvious answers are all part of her bronze physique. She holds the sword of truth aloft her head, pointing towards the sky and the heavens – where justice is known and dealt accordingly by the server. She also holds the scales of justice, a symbol that is widely recognised in our society. This points towards her base, showing that truth and justice can be dealt for either side of the battle; you never know where your justice will take you based on your own personal truth. However, the biggest controversy surrounding Verity has to be that of her exposed anatomy, and that of her foetus too. This appeared to be the biggest concern of the people of Ilfracombe, but I think in retrospect we can agree it has been done a tasteful manner. Not only does the exposed section point out towards the sea, so that then if you’re on the land you only see the exposed section if you desire to, it also acts as an educational tool. Children are some of the most inquisitive creatures on the earth, and by having the inners of a human exposed, they ask questions. I have actually heard children asking their parents what different parts of the anatomy were and what they are used for whilst viewing Verity. If this is a down side to her, I feel you need to reevaluate your position. Of course I am not expecting any of you to share my views, but I personally feel she is going to serve a great purpose to this town. She is a talking point, she is an educational tool, she is a tourist attraction, and she is going to help fuel this beautiful and historic harbour town for years to come.

Verity – I love you.
