The Bigger Picture
M
y first published piece ran when I was 11 years old. I wrote a poem about my childhood idol, Walt Disney, for a school contest and ended up taking home the top prize. Feeling pretty good about my achievement, I sent the poem in snail mail (the ice age, kids … before email) to the Disney Channel Magazine, the monthly edition that came with your cable subscription. Months went by. The holidays rolled around, and the December issue arrived in our mailbox on schedule. On the submissions page, alongside some crayon sketches of Donald Duck and a few candid character photos from Disneyland, there was my poem, in black-and-white ink. Here was one of my proudest moments to date … and not just for me but also for my parents, who promptly ordered several additional copies to pass around to friends. If you had asked my 11-year-old self if I’d be putting words to press some 30 years later, I don’t think that notion would have even registered. This wasn’t about future career goals or something for the eventual college application. This was simply recognition for doing something I loved, and the confidence to give my dreams a go. You can’t frame a feeling like that. You just have to hope to experience it again many times in the days you’re given. When putting together the “19 Under 19” feature, it’s difficult to not be distracted by the impressive achievements of our young nominees. Top GPAs, sports championships, Ivy League aspirations … the breadth of accomplishment is nothing short of awe-inspiring. But if you delve deeper into the lives of these young women and men, you’ll discover way more than grades, trophies and letters of acceptance. They are also leaders, survivors, creators, risk-takers and givers. They refuse to be defined solely on titles and rankings. They find the most satisfaction in action … defying odds, taking chances, making a difference. It’s just a hunch, but I’m pretty sure they also love every moment of it. And somehow they do all this and still find time to do homework, get a driver’s license and follow their heroes on Instagram. For this reason, we are truly honored to celebrate these 19 unique individuals in this issue. Now get out in the world and make us proud.

WHERE WE LIVE | COMMUNITY
Love Wins In early January, news began circulating through social media that members of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), known for its controversial protests, would be bringing a message of hate to the borders of Redondo Union High School. The primary target of their protest: the school’s GayStraight Alliance, a campus group championing acceptance and understanding among fellow students. With the help of social media, a counter-protest was announced for January 11, the day WBC planned to arrive in Redondo. Blazing signs of love and inclusion, several hundred people joined the GayStraight Alliance in an outpouring of support and pride, peacefully overpowering the handful of WBC members who showed up. We’re incredibly proud of the students and the community allies who have their backs. Way to go, RUHS! PHOTOGRAPHED BY KREMER

Making the Cut Since earning a coveted spot on Lifetime’s Project Runway: Junior, Manhattan Beach teen Matt Sarafa sizes up a promising future in the world of fashion. INTERVIEWED BY DARREN
ELMS
Before we dig into this Season of Project Runway: Junior, let’s check in on your life as a senior at Vistamar. What’s going through your head as you get ready to graduate in a couple months? I can’t wait to graduate high school and move on to even bigger things. Don’t

get me wrong—I love my school, but I’m just superexcited to be able to devote all my time to doing what I love, which is fashion. When did you first discover you had a flair for fashion? I was 7 years old when I stumbled upon a marathon of Project Runway with my
mom. I was immediately hooked, and here I am today! Speaking of your mom, your parents must be proud of all you’ve accomplished in such a short time. Tell us about their support. My parents are so incredibly amazing. They support me in all that I do, and

Home is where the heart is... they have encouraged me to go do what I love since I was little. I watched your makeup tutorials online. How did those come about? I have a YouTube channel called MakeupByMatt that I actually started a few years ago with two friends. I just kept going with it, and now I have over 20,000 subscribers. I love all things fashion- and beauty-related, so I try to share my passion and my personality through my videos. Who’s your all-time favorite designer? I really love Alexander McQueen. I love that his clothes are super-edgy and dark. More recently I’ve been loving Givenchy and Fendi for my personal style. I really appreciate designers that aren’t afraid to be bold and step out of the box. How about your favorite up-and-coming designer? By no means are they an “up-and-coming” brand, but Thomas Wylde is an amazing clothing brand that is on the rise now in the U.S. Their work has been featured in some of the top fashion magazines like Italian Vogue, and I’m superfortunate to be starting an internship with them very soon. I’m actually going to New York to see their show at New York Fashion Week this weekend! What’s next for you? Right now, I’m super-busy getting some Hot Mess merchandise up on my website. I know my fans have been waiting super-patiently on the release, but I just want everything to be absolutely perfect. Kelly Osbourne was even seen wearing my Hot Mess leather jacket! I’m also trying to balance all of this with school and friends, so its tough but I love it.

OK, let’s talk Project Runway: Junior. Way to go representing the South Bay on an iconic show! How was the overall experience? The experience was so amazing. I got to work with some major players in the fashion industry and, most importantly, meet 11 other designers my age who love fashion as much as I do. What’s it like to have your every move and every emotion filmed day after day? Crazy pressure, right? The pressure while filming the show is so insane. I’ve been watching Project Runway since I was 7, but it’s a totally different experience than what I was expecting. The stress really builds up, especially on elimination day, and it gets super emotional. But overall it was such a great experience that has really helped start my career.

Even though you didn’t get to the final, what did you take away from it? Being on Project Runway: Junior reminded me more than ever how much I love fashion. It really inspired me to work even harder, and I feel like I came out of the experience as a better designer. Is Tim Gunn as cool as we already think he is? Absolutely. He’s really an amazing person. In person, Tim is exactly how he is portrayed on TV: kind, funny and very knowledgeable about fashion. He offers amazing critique, and it was such a pleasure to not only meet him but to get his opinions on my work. Make it work, Matt. l

s Katy Shea rallies the attention of the band, hoping to make the most of the last few minutes of practice, she smiles and apologizes for the cramped quarters. “Sorry, I know it’s stuffy in here, but that’s band practice for you.” Katy and the guys are working on perfecting Kenny Loggins’ 1986 release of “Danger Zone.” You might know it from a little film called Top Gun. Nathan Derhake is on keyboard, Slater Heidrich on electric bass, Henry Watts on electric guitar, Christopher Beauchamp on drums and Stanford Friedman on lead vocals. The band, known as Delirious, has been playing together since September 2015 and meets weekly at the Coast Music Conservatory in Hermosa Beach as part of Coast’s band program. Through the co-instruction of teachers Katy Shea, who focuses primarily on vocals and keyboard, and Cory Spurgin, who focuses primarily on guitars and drums, Delirious has been working to prepare for their March 13 performance at Saint Rocke. For some of the band members, playing with Delirious is solely a hobby. For others, it’s a way to prepare for a profession in the
44

music world. “For me it’s both,” Henry notes. “I’d like to be a popular artist, but not like today’s terrible artists.” Henry’s statement makes the rest of the band members laugh as they quickly assert which artists are good—Arctic Monkeys … and awful—Justin Bieber. There seems to be a consensus that most of today’s “mainstream” artists aren’t particularly impressive. Except for Taylor Swift … she gets a pass. Oh, and Pharrell. Everyone loves Pharrell. Whatever their individual reasons are for playing with Delirious, their innate draw to music—as well as an earnest appreciation for their favorite artists—is visible with all the boys. “In my kindergarten class, I was always tapping the table with my fingers,” Christopher, who is now in seventh grade, explains. “I would always get in trouble until my teacher recommended I take up the drums.” For Stanford, now in sixth grade, singing has been something he’s been doing his whole life. Delirious just offers him a more formalized platform to do so. It’s when the band talks about the artists who inspire them, however, that their passion for music is the most apparent. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Beatles, Queen, Led
Zeppelin and Johnny Cash all make the list for some of the all-time great musicians. But credit is also given to some lesser-known artists, particularly in the category of rap. “The reason rap gets so much hate is because the media showcases the worst artists,” explains Christopher. “But in reality, if you dig deeper into it, record labels like Pro Era and Odd Future have some really talented young artists.” Their love of music and commitment to the band enable Delirious to play so well as a collective. “Performing rock songs as an ensemble is a very adult skill,” Katy notes. “But time and time again they rise to whatever challenge we give them.” Katy, who discovered her own passion for teaching while studying music in college, emphasizes process over results. “My perspective on teaching has changed now that I am a mother,” she explains. “I used to see everything from the kids’ perspectives. Now I see the students through the eyes of their proud parents. I know it’s more about the musical journey and the joy of learning, not about perfection.” It seems pretty clear from the camaraderie between the five band members that everyone’s enjoying their journey. l

Egg-static! We take a crack at the Easter egg’s colorful past.
In many cultures, eggs are considered a symbol of fertility and rebirth.
Ostrich eggs engraved with decoration were found in Africa and dated to be 60,000 years old.
Gold and silver ostrich eggs were often placed on the graves of ancient Sumerians and Egyptians.
A batik (wax resist) process is used to create intricate, brilliantly colored eggs, the best known of which is the Ukrainian pysanka and the Polish pisanka.
Early Christians in Mesopotamia painted eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ.
The celebrated Fabergé workshops created exquisite jeweled Easter eggs for the Russian Imperial Court.
Recent Easter egg traditions may have originated from Lent practices and the fasting from all eggs and dairy. With chickens producing and no one eating, there was a stockpile of eggs. This surplus had to be eaten quickly to prevent spoiling … thus the hard-boiled egg.
In some parts of the United Kingdom (such as Scotland and Northeast England) painted eggs are rolled down steep hills on Easter Sunday (instead of on flat ground).
The average household consumed five dozen eggs at Easter in 2014.
46
SOUTHBAY, APRIL 2016
In Judaism, a hard-boiled egg is an element of the Passover seder representing festival sacrifice.
The first Cadbury Creme Egg debuted in 1963. A recipe alteration in 2015 caused an uproar.
Eggs contain no carbs or sugar and are a good source of protein. Yolks contain choline, which promotes normal cell activity, liver function and the transportation of nutrients throughout the body. “Easter egg” is also a term used to refer to a hidden joke or message inside various digital media, like video games and DVDs.
“Which came first … the chicken or the egg?” If you find out, let us know.

or Najla Barile, owner and director of Harmony Yoga, becoming a third-generation Redondo Beach business owner wasn’t exactly part of her master plan. “I never put it together. I never consciously thought I wanted to go into business for myself,” she says. But when an opportunity came along to pair her passion for yoga with her family’s long-standing history as small business owners in the South Bay, everything clicked. It all began in 1905, the year her grandfather William Coury opened French Method Cleaning, the South Bay’s first dry cleaners. An immigrant from Lebanon, William came through Ellis Island as William Khouri before the spelling of his name was changed to the more Americanized Coury. “It was so interesting,” says Najla. “I was able to see his name written there.” After Ellis Island, a 20-something William made his way to Texas, where he joined the Navy. “When he first came [to America], he really wanted to show his patriotism,” Najla notes. After being diagnosed with asthma, however, William opted for a drier climate and moved from Texas to Redondo Beach. A jeweler by trade in Lebanon, the dry cleaning process was new to him—and a little dangerous to perfect. “At the time, they used gasoline to clean the clothes,” Najla explains. Soon, however, William was delivering all over Los Angeles (in a horse and buggy) and gaining a reputation for excellent service that eventually led to two cleaners in Manhattan Beach, one in Hermosa Beach, two in Redondo Beach and one in El Segundo. With the growth of his businesses, William changed the name of the cleaners from French Method Cleaning to Coury and Son Cleaners.
oursouthbay.com
In 1956 Najla’s father, Raymond William Coury, joined the family business along with his three brothers. At this point there were two cleaners in Redondo Beach and one in Hermosa. The brothers, having grown up in the community, were known around town as “the Coury brothers,” Najla says. The cleaners served as a social hub. “People would come and bring donuts and coffee and just want to hang out with my dad and his brothers,” Najla explains. Through her father and her uncles, Najla got a firsthand look at what it meant to own a small business. “My dad would give me little jobs: sweeping the floors or dusting,” she notes. “I would always see people coming in and hanging out. My dad really liked the social part of the dry cleaning business.” But it was more than just the day-to-work that left an impression on Najla. “When you’re in business for yourself, you’re always working,” she explains. “I noticed that with my dad at a young age; he would work long hours, but my parents were happy.” In 1990 the Coury brothers were ready to sell. But even under new ownership, the Redondo Beach location on Beryl Street is still named Coury & Son’s Dry Cleaners. With the family business behind him, Raymond ventured out on his own and opened Rayson Window Coverings, which he operated until 2010. For Najla, seeing the way her family has done business over the years has greatly influenced her own professional practices. “I really believe in honesty, a good work ethic and fairness,” she says. “I learned that from my family. It is an honor to be able to serve the Redondo Beach community, just as my family has done for the past 100 years, by being generous and hospitable. If you get to do what you love, that’s even better.” l

able food court have changed. This month we took a look at two incredible South Bay dining destinations that are in fact located in malls. These aren’t your ordinary breed of malls, though, and along with updated retail shopping come updated dining options. Forget the grim kiosks with fluorescent lighting and filthy tables. Both Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance and The Point in El Segundo offer carefully curated food outlets that run the gamut from artisanal ice cream to sensational sushi to farm-fresh produce at your table. Say goodbye to hotdogs on sticks, limp french fries and microwaved pretzels … and get to know these two inspiring restaurants while you exercise that AMEX card. The Point in El Segundo showcases a variety of excellent dining options: beloved Mendocino Farms, the aptly-named Smitten Ice Cream and burgers at Hopdoddy that may well supplant your In-N-Out habit, to name just a few. For me, though, it was the opening of Superba Food + Bread that got me psyched. Friends of mine opened the first Superba Snackbar and Superba Food + Bread in Venice, and I was excited to see what owner Paul Hibler and his American Gonzo Food Corp. might bring to the South Bay. way. You’re welcome.) Everything at Superba is, well, superb. From the breezy, light-filled space to the unforced smiles on every employee’s face, Superba feels happy. I arrived for a late breakfast with friends at 10:30 a.m., and the girls and I were still chatting (and digesting) at 2 p.m. From ladies who brunch to young families navigating strollers and high chairs to a lunch-rush of folks in work apparel, Superba handles them all with grace and warmth. But it’s the food—oh that yummy food—that keeps all these disparate diners delighted. The day menu is casually divided into “Breakfasty” and “Lunchy” categories—no finite meal periods here, so you can experience the curry chicken salad that blew me away while your friend can go straight to purgatory with eggs. It’s the freshness of what they’re serving, the inventiveness of the presentation, the artfulness of color on the plate that impresses. You can buy yellowish curry chicken salad at Bristol Farms in a little plastic takeout container, or you can eat the delicious version that Sous Chef Lynne Tolentino made for us. larger in scale than Superba, everything about Great Maple is spot-on. From the gorgeous Parisian décor that cheekily evokes a lost Torrance “rue” to the absolutely flawless service staff to the bacon-festooned maple donut served warm from the oven, this restaurant rocked. I knew nothing about its ownership or back-story in this case … and came away not just satiated but impressed. Great Maple is the kind of restaurant I would have opened, had I actually married that cute New York chef guy. It’s warm and inviting, with just enough Francophilia to keep this writer delighted.
Menu highlights from Great Maple included the aforementioned donut, which should qualify as the eighth venal sin in and of itself, and two classic lunch sandwiches. The Great Maple French dip and the “Tuileries” turkey burger disappeared alongside some addictive Parmesan truffle fries; at $20 and $18 respectively, these lunch sandwiches aren’t inexpensive but are frankly more than big enough to split for two. In keeping with the France-meets-Torrance metaphor, the wine list offers some fantastic pours from lesser-known appellations like Nimes and Corbières. I must also give a shoutout to the house-made lavender-infused lemonade—so so so yummy—and to our wondrous waitress Vanessa, whose flawless mise-en-place and warm service would be equally at ease in a Michelin-starred restaurant. In an area historically known more for Toyota and Japanese markets, le Great Maple is its own little appellation of sorts—an outpost of fresh California fare with lovely French grace notes that will have me driving down there again and soon. hen 14-year-old high school freshman Lane Karlitz talks about the events that led to his second-place finish at the 2015 Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA) contest in Washington D.C., he’s quick to downplay what it took to get him there. “It was pretty standard,” he notes. To say he’s being modest would be putting it mildly. From the program’s initial application process to the conceptualization, development, presentation and—soon—the launch of his app, Study Senses, Lane’s experiences with YEA have been anything but standard. For Lane, however, YEA was only the beginning. After D.C. he headed for Arkansas, where he presented in front of thousands gathered at the Walmart amphitheater for the company’s Saturday Morning Meeting. Fun fact: Lane shared the stage with Chelsea Clinton that day. Today, through a partnership with Sam’s Club, the launch of Study Senses is underway with an in-store event on the horizon. “We’re in development,” Lane explains. “When we are in beta, we will be doing an in-store promotion in the Sam’s Club in Torrance.” After he explains what “beta” means, Lane dives into the ins and outs of Study Senses. “[It’s] the next generation’s Schoolhouse Rock!” he explains. “It’s a mnemonic technology platform that will revolutionize education.” By creating a mash-up that combines your study material with a song of your choice, Study Senses “makes learning fun,” he continues. It’s so simple and so smart. The idea was born out of Lane’s own study needs. “I was in Spanish class and having trouble studying for a test,” he notes. “My teacher’s husband created little 30-second songs with the material, and it helped me.” When he’s not pitching revolutionary ideas, fundraising or cultivating professional relationships, Lane enjoys some everyday teenage activities, like playing ice hockey and golf. He’s also a member of the Palos Verdes chapter of Los Hermanos, a philanthropic group for young boys. But outside school, it’s Study Senses where Lane devotes most of his time. When asked if it’s still fun, Lane smiles and says, “Yes, or else I wouldn’t do it.” l

’mores? Check. Wood-burning fireplaces? Check. Horseback riding? Check. Fishing? Check. If this sounds like the ideal Southern California getaway, grab the cowboy hat and boots and look no further than The Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort in Solvang near Santa Barbara. For nearly 70 years the rustic, private 10,000acre dude ranch has been a veritable playground for outdoor adventure and family reunions. The oak and sycamore tree-lined property is replete with 73 individual cottages and guestrooms (there are no TVs or phones in the room), fashioned with historic black-and-white photos, Western-inspired artwork, tartan plaid throw pillows and private patios with Adirondack-style chairs. The resort offers guests a chance to relive the days of sleepaway camp and channel their inner cowboy with a long checklist of options: a working ranch with 100 quarter horses; an eponymous 100-acre spring-fed lake; a tennis center; air rifles and archery; two 18-hole championship golf courses; an outdoor swimming pool; a fitness center and spa; a historic adobe camp; and an extensive kid’s program. For some fresh air off-property, gear up for a guided cycling tour—led by longtime Alisal employee and avid cyclist Eric Larsen—along select routes (including a portion of the course of the infamous Amgen Tour of California cycling race) that wind through vineyards and apple farms. Other activities span guided nature walks, movies under the stars, an introduction to horsemanship skills class for first-time riders or those looking to hone skills, and a seasonal lake barbecue with a hay wagon ride and live music. True grill masters can perfect culinary skills and learn how to build a fire at a twice-yearly BBQ Bootcamp (next camp is October 19–21). For daily dinner and to swap stories about the day’s lineup, head to the modern-day “mess hall” with a large stone fireplace, red-and-white checkered tablecloths and menu items using locally-sourced ingredients—from fresh arugula and radicchio salad to chicken fried steak with garlic-whipped potatoes and asparagus. It’s as close to real life on the ranch as you can imagine.

MY MANY FACES BY CAROL BRYAN
I have had many faces. Growing up, my physical appearance became an asset that opened many doors and became my main source of income. I started modeling at the age of sixteen and also worked in the beauty industry. I had a beautiful daughter, a successful husband, and a loving and supportive family. From the outside looking in, it must have seemed like I had it all, but looking back now I see that my life was lacking so much. I have come to realize how truly deceiving looks can be and how precious every moment of life is. This realization took time and perseverance, but now I see that I was rescued and given new life, and I am certain that God was my hero. In late 2009 fillers, intended as preventative aging measures, were injected into areas of my face. These procedures resulted in my face expanding, contracting, and becoming distorted. Once the initial damage was done, I was no longer able to go out in public. Corrective procedures worsened the damage, until one day, it was so bad I needed to hide my face - not only from the world, but also from my family and friends. After four frightening years of isolation and emotional and physical pain, in 2013, my daughter finally had enough of the secrecy, and brought me back to the world to get help. She and a friend reached out to teaching hospitals all over the country, but only one would take my case. Dr. Reza Jarrahy, Co-director of the UCLA Craniofacial Clinic, of the UCLA Face Transplant Program, and Associate Professor at UCLA, with amazing compassion, assured me that he would help, but made me fully aware that there were unknown risks. My case was unprecedented. I quickly realized I had to put my trust in him. Dr. Jarrahy made me feel safe, at a time when I was so scared, felt so isolated and was extremely tired. He consulted with a panel of doctors, sharing my story and seeking assistance with the required surgeries. Only a single doctor
was up for the challenge: one of the country’s most renowned microvascular surgeons, United States and Canada Board Certified plastic surgeon, Dr. J. Brian Boyd. Dr. Boyd is a Professor of Surgery with the David Geffen School of Medicine at U.C.L.A. and Chief of Plastic Surgery at Harbor-U.C.L.A. Medical Center. Dr. Boyd is a highly skilled expert and has over 25 years experience in microsurgery. He specializes in breast reconstruction and aesthetic surgery, as well. Dr. Boyd is compassionate and goes above and beyond to help others, even against all odds! That is what makes Dr. Boyd extraordinary. This team of surgeons truly worked miracles. If it weren’t for their vast knowledge and expertise, I would still be wearing head scarves and holding the skin of my forehead up in order to see out of my left eye. I would still be afraid to leave my home. Despite all their most careful efforts, however, the initial surgery left me blind in my right eye; there could have been worse complications, so ultimately I am lucky to have only lost half my vision. My road to recovery has been an extremely bumpy road, filled with unknown risks, anxiety, and fear. Somehow, in facing these challenges, I was able to find within myself a courage and tenacity I never knew I had. I realize how unsatisfied I was. I was lonely. I was weak. I was unhappy. I had no idea what my purpose was in life. How is it that I feel better about myself now, than I ever did then? I learned how to open up and ask for help, and appreciate the love and support of my family and the many trauma therapists, the mental health professionals, and alternative therapies that have been made available to me. And it has taught me lessons about what beauty is and how important it is to show one’s true inner self to the world. Sadly, it wasn’t until I couldn’t recognize myself that I realized true beauty begins on the inside.

More than 450 guests attended the “Kentucky Derby’s – The Run for The Roses” theme event at Terranea Resort. The fashion show included collections from hot LA designers along with a tribute to Vistas past presidents. The event raised tens of thousands of dollars to help children with special needs.

Island Enchantment WHERE: Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in O’ahu, Hawaii WHY: Whether Disney fan or Hawaii enthusiast, this spacious resort on the quiet Western end of O’ahu provides the perfect mix of playtime and paradise for all ages. HOW: Many major airlines offer direct flights to O’ahu year-round, including Virgin Air, which recently debuted service to Honolulu. From the island capital it’s about 20 miles to the resort by car or shuttle. 92-1185 Ali’inui Drive in Kapolei, 866-443-4763, resorts.disney.go.com/aulani-hawaii-resort WHEN: You can’t beat Hawaii’s year-round climate, but non-school vacation months like September, October, January and February could be less crowded. The annual Honolulu Food & Wine Festival is October 14-30, with many top chefs and foodies descending on the resort for events. WHAT: If you’re worried a trip to Aulani will be one character breakfast after another, don’t fear the Disney brand in the name. Entertainment and ambience is one of Disney’s staples, and this piece of tropical paradise is no exception. Are you likely to run into Mickey and Minnie in Hawaiian shirts? Yes (not necessarily a bad thing, especially for the youngsters). Should you expect the kid quotient to be overwhelming? No. Just a sprinkling of pixie dust here, and the effect is enchanting and education for everyone. One of the best amenities at the resort is the accommodations, which range from standard rooms to three-bedroom villas … so the more the merrier. Dining is also diverse and delicious, with many local specialties blended with family fare and fine dining options for the adults. With much of the action happening both poolside and oceanside, there are also a shaves ice stand, snack shop, pool bar and that famous Dole Whip for Disney diehards. The resort is built around a giant aquatic zone full of pools, waterslides, snorkeling reef and more. If the Pacific’s more your style, you can walk your gear to sandy white beaches on the Ko Olina Lagoon. If you need a break from outdoor activities, visit the Laniwai spa and enjoy a few hours of pampering and polishing. And no trip to Hawaii is complete without a luau. Aulani’s take on this tradition comes in the form of a Starlit Hui, an evening celebration of Hawaiian traditions and modern entertainment with island-inspired music and hula—along with unique storytelling from “Uncle,” Disney characters and magical touches.

Desert Comeback WHERE: The Ritz-Carlton in Rancho Mirage WHY: A dramatic 2014 remodel to the property puts this celebrated hotel back on top with gorgeous desert views at all corners. HOW: An easy two-hour drive from the South Bay via the 10 Freeway beyond Palm Springs. 68900 Frank Sinatra Way in Rancho Mirage, 760-321-8282, ritzcarlton.com/en/hotels/california/rancho-mirage WHEN: Steer clear of the summer months from June through September. Things start to average out in the fall and stay lovely through spring. The weeks around Easter and spring break get a bit hectic and pricey in the desert cities due to the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals. WHAT: No longer a stuffy stalwart of yesterday, the hotel is much less Gerald Ford and more Tom Ford following the seven-year-long redux. Sleek, modern and unfussy, the new design lets the sweeping desert vista take center stage, providing just the right amount of outdoor space and indoor escape for lucky visitors. With two pools and plenty of places to lounge, the milder months draw the sun worshippers outdoors. For those in need of a heat retreat, the spa calls with beautifully appointed lounges, treatment rooms and a lush menu of services. The kids will have plenty to keep themselves busy, including nature hikes, stargazing on a clear night and s’mores roasting on the private first-floor fire pits. Dining highlights a stay at the Ritz with two notable venues: State Fair Bar + Kitchen and The Edge Steakhouse. While the former shines as an optimal family meal gathering spot any time of the day, the service and selection at The Edge helps it stands out as an exceptional culinary experience for mom and dad. Perched right at the tip of the property overlooking the twinkling valley below, you just might get distracted by the sights and smells on your table—some of the best in the area. Don’t be surprised if this restaurant, with its own dry-aging room and international wine list, becomes the hottest seat in the desert.

(Ernest Hemingway penned part of For Whom the Bell Tolls in the office of the Hemingway Suite.) The property, originally built in 1935 by Stanley Underwood, also boasts an updated fitness center, a heated outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, a refurbished bowling alley and arcade, and a 20,000-square-foot spa lined with historic black-andwhite photos. Treatments range from the Cloud Nine Massage (customized to target specific tight or sore muscles) to the detoxifying Green Tea Wrap to help promote immunity. Sign up for a private ice skating lesson with local pro and Disney Ice dancer Natalia Zeitseva. Book a walking tour of Ketchum with husband-and-wife duo Jim and Wendy Jaquet (wendyjaquet@yahoo.com) and explore history, art galleries and must-see sights such as the Sun Valley Museum of History (comlib.org), where exhibits have included a Ski Hall of Fame with hometown heroes including Picabo Street and a display of ski gear through the decades. From Trail Creek Cabin—a rustic, log cabin-gone-restaurant accessible via a horse-drawn sleigh ride—to an Austrianinspired bakery recalling a ski chalet, there are plenty of restaurant options around town. Start early with a hearty breakfast at Gretchen’s at the Sun Valley Lodge. The recently revamped eatery, aptly named for Olympic Alpine medalist Gretchen Fraser—the first American to win a gold medal in skiing in 1948, serves organic steel-cut oatmeal; egg white frittatas with cherry tomatoes and spinach; “Power Bowls” with quinoa, edamame and baby kale; and cinnamon bread pudding French toast drizzled with walnut and brown sugar. For a leisurely afternoon lunch or dinner après skiing, take the gondola to the top of Bald Mountain to Roundhouse. (Comfy Pendleton-style blankets are included for the ride to and from the base.) Lunch options range from fondue paired with apple slices, bread and pears to duck salad, while dinner offers items from apple cider bisque with cardamom to branzino with celery root velouté. l

hen the players of the LA Lions all-girls youth hockey program take to the ice, they don’t hold back. You need only watch them compete at the Toyota Sports Center to see their athletic enthusiasm in action. Ranging in age from 8 to 12, the players are all smiles as they fly through the cold air and across the ice, running drills and skating from one end of the rink to the other. “It’s exceptional,” says Megan Rivera, head coach of the Lions. “We’ll be one of the only hockey clubs in LA County with a girls-only program with multiple age levels.” Megan, who’s also an account executive for the LA Kings hockey development program, notes that the Lions— also operated by the Kings—consists of roughly 50 or so girls on three teams, a new and groundbreaking program that’s “growing all the time.” While many of the girls are from the South Bay area, Megan says that some travel quite a distance to practice during the week at the Sports Center. “We have a girl who travels from Ojai, another from Valencia,” she says. The Lions’ burgeoning popularity highlights not only the increased demand for an all-girls youth hockey program in the South Bay—something that was sorely missing in the area— but also the need for more girls youth hockey programs like it in California. The Lions also serve as an important reminder about the sport overall in the South Bay: Ice hockey is tremendously beneficial for children, helping to instill confidence and a sense of camaraderie that’s invaluable. Becki Winckler, a kindergarten teacher in the Hawthorne school district and the founder and manager of the Lions, started the team last spring. Her daughter, Lily, plays on a co-ed youth hockey team but had an interest in playing with an all-girls team. Yet options concerning girls hockey programs were, and still are, somewhat limited in Los Angeles. One of the closest, longstanding programs—The Lady Ducks—is way south in Anaheim. “This is our backyard,” says Becki. “We shouldn’t have to leave.” She gathered a group of girls, roughly around 8 years of age, who were also decent skaters and had experience with hockey. Many of them had played on co-ed youth hockey programs, and Becki found a common theme: While they enjoyed hockey, several of the young girls had given up the sport. “There were some girls I came across who no longer skated. When I asked why, their parents would say that she wanted to play with girls. It was sad to think that they couldn’t play,” Becki says, adding
that she was excited to get these girls back into the sport. She pulled enough girls together to participate in a youth hockey tournament last Labor Day: the Junior Kings’ Tinseltown Tournament Series. It was during and after the tournament that Becki connected with Megan, who then reached out to the LA Kings to officially establish the Lions all-girl program. “The only reason we were able to partner with the Kings was because of Megan. If Megan wouldn’t have been our coach, I don’t think I would’ve been in the position to grow this program so quickly,” she says, adding that the program is looking to add additional teams with older teens this year. Becki has seen, firsthand, how beneficial the program has been for her daughter and the other Lions’ girls. Many of the girls, she notes, don’t live near one another, but the team gives them the opportunity to connect—and they’ve developed what Megan calls “the sisterhood.” “When it’s game time, even if they lose they’re so supportive. They truly love to see each other. They’ve formed outside friendships that have nothing to do with school. The older girls have become leaders for the younger girls too,” says Becki. She goes on to say that, for some of the girls—like her daughter—who also play on other co-ed teams, the Lions program will give them the chance to continue playing the sport once or if the idea of playing hockey alongside boys becomes unappealing. Megan adds that the Lions have applied to play in the Southern California Amateur Hockey Association, and if they’re accepted they will be playing league games sometime this fall. League games will be a mix of co-ed teams, and occasionally the Lions play against other California all-girls teams in youth tournaments as well. “It’s an interesting dynamic,” says Megan. As a hockey fan and player herself (she started at age 6 and played at Boston College), Megan has a keen awareness concerning the benefits of hockey—one of which is the sense of solidarity. She notes that girls on co-ed hockey teams sometimes don’t quite feel like they’re part of the social structure of a boys team. “But here [the girls] can come together and socialize, and gender isn’t an issue. The palling around they can do in the locker room, for instance. That friendship is critical, and it’s how that sisterhood develops,” she says. Parents of the Lions players agree. Timberlake Lewis notes that his 12-year-old daughter, Riley, started figured skating at around 5, and when her younger brother eventually picked up hockey she was immediately hooked. In addition to the Lions, she also plays on a

co-ed youth team, and Timberlake has noticed how the Lions program has positively impacted his daughter’s take on hockey. “On the co-ed team she would play defense, and Riley would defer and be a little timid,” he says. But on the Lions she felt a little more at ease, and she moved from defense to center. “She has to chase the puck and get aggressive. That self-confidence rubbed off,” he says, adding that Riley now plays center on her co-ed team. “Sports, in its best form, builds self-confidence. Not just concerning teamwork but also concerning how these kids view themselves.” Marty Williams says his 7-year-old daughter, Makenzie, loves the program. She also plays on a co-ed team and mentions that the co-ed aspect could sometimes “take the luster out” of the game. “But the all-girl program really does offer her more of a chance to assimilate,” he says, adding that the self-confidence she’s gleaned from the Lions has carried over to other aspects of her life. Now that the Lions are officially established and growing, both Megan and Becki look to a more competitive future. They’re both optimistic. Megan notes that given the select number of girls-only tournaments, they often play a lot of the same teams. The parents of one team—which the Lions played last fall and earlier this January—came up to Megan during a tournament and said that the Lions girls have improved dramatically. “They’re saying that the distance we’ve come over two months is remarkable,” says Megan, adding that the upcoming season will be an exciting one for the Lions. l

THE NEED FOR SPEED WHEN A CHILD IS DIAGNOSED WITH ADHD, WE’RE OFTEN QUICK TO REACH FOR A STIMULANT. BUT SHOULD WE PROCEED WITH CAUTION?

hen you’re a second-grader and your parents give you a pill, you pop it like a Flintstones vitamin. After all, it comes from the two people you trust more than anyone in the world—and they got it from a doctor. That’s what Carter, 23, believed when she was a student at a highly competitive, private school in the South Bay area—a young girl whose wealthy, successful and well-intentioned parents wanted to ensure she would grow up to enjoy the same success they’d experienced. Her parents as well as her teachers believed she couldn’t handle school without Adderall. Carter, who asked that her last name not be used, still isn’t sure whether her childhood problem was Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder—ADHD—or if she was just an impatient, high-energy kid who couldn’t seem to stay in her chair. But she does know that Adderall, one of several drugs prescribed for ADHD, set her on a self-destructive path. “I was given a prescription based on my teacher saying, ‘She can’t sit still,’” Carter says now. “My parents took me to a psychiatrist, and in two seconds she had written me a ‘scrip.’” Carter continues: “I became familiar with taking a pill to succeed. And if you are taking that medication for a long period of time, you build up a tolerance. So I continued to have to increase the amount I was taking every day— and if I snorted it, it worked even better. Then I heard that cocaine was exactly like that, so why not try it?”
Epidemic or Over-Diagnosis?
Carter’s story represents an extreme case in which Adderall, on the market since 1995, became a gateway to an illegal narcotic drug. Certainly every child treated with Adderall or other prescription stimulants prescribed for ADHD (Ritalin, Concerta and Vyvanse are others) does not end up abusing cocaine. Still, each year an increasing percentage of kids are diagnosed with ADHD. According to the most recent (2013) data from the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one in five high school-age boys and 11% of all school-age children has received a medical diagnosis of ADHD at some point in their lives. The figure represents a 16% increase since 2007 and a 41% increase over the preceding decade. The same study says two-thirds of those children have been treated with stimulants. (To avoid repetition, assume that when Adderall is mentioned we are talking about the spectrum of prescription medications for ADHD). Some experts blast the psychiatric industry for “selling” the ADHD diagnosis along with the drugs to treat it. Whether or not you agree,
oursouthbay.com
increasing ADHD diagnoses mean more parents are facing a difficult choice: Is Adderall really the answer? Mental health professionals interviewed for this story agree only 3% to 7% of American children actually have ADHD—despite the rate of diagnosis. Conflicting data leave many wellmeaning parents feeling lost in the dark. More boys than girls are diagnosed with ADHD, but that does not necessarily mean fewer girls struggle with the disorder. Tarzana child and adolescent psychiatrist Sahar Douek explains that ADHD boys more often exhibit hyperactive symptoms, while girls might just be inattentive—easier for a teacher to tolerate or simply overlook than a disruptive boy. “Girls may be under-diagnosed,” she says.
Why They Work
Let’s back up for a second. If an ADHD kid is hyperactive, unfocused and impulsive, wouldn’t a stimulant makes things worse?
Dr. Douek says the easiest way to think about it is that those with ADHD have a lower-than-normal level of dopamine—a neurotransmitter that, among other things, helps regulate concentration. For those kids, Adderall increases the ability to focus. She cautions it’s easy to mistake other problems for ADHD. Anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorders, seizure disorders that may cause children to “blank out” for several seconds (mistaken for lapses in attention), fatigue from sleep apnea and autism are just a handful of problems that may present as ADHD. Still, she adds that the potential for misdiagnosis should not deter parents from getting a correct diagnosis that may lead to appropriate treatment. “A kid who forgets to bring their assignments to school might not need medication,” she says. “But a child who has a more severe difficulty paying attention—do you want the kid to suffer?”

The Need for Speed
“
Ask any teen now, and they’ll say you can get Adderall on campus in under five minutes. You are taught that you can do better if you do Adderall, so why would you not?”
When They Work
Psychologist Moe Gelbart, executive director of the Thelma McMillen Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment at Torrance Memorial Hospital, says stimulants can work wonders when brain chemistry is the problem. “The kid who can’t concentrate and read a page, all of a sudden he can read a book,” says Dr. Gelbart. He adds that doing better in school may improve self-esteem, breaking a “downward cycle” that can lead to depression. But he calls ADHD stimulants “powerful drugs” and calls their use a “riskbenefit analysis.” Courtney Behrenhausen, director of educational support services for prestigious Campbell Hall School, calls treating ADHD with stimulant drugs a “very greyscale issue.” Dr. Behrenhausen has held this position for 14 years and served as a teacher and junior high dean at Campbell Hall for six years prior. She says she’s seen the full range of how Adderall can affect a student’s academic performance and social interaction. “There are certainly some students for whom it is literally a miracle drug,” she says. “It makes their lives 100,000 times easier. It allows them to reach their academic potential, their personal potential. There are kids who are really lucky and don’t have a whole lot of side effects, and it just makes everything good … all the way to the other end where there are
96
SOUTHBAY, APRIL 2016
kids for whom it doesn’t work well and it has very negative physical or emotional effects. Some have to try a lot of different medications, and I’ve had students who just eventually couldn’t be medicated; it didn’t work for them. And everything in between.” Child psychiatrist Marissa Caudill, who has offices in Westwood and in Encino, calls Adderall and similar meds “among the best in all of psychiatry” and believes most children can tolerate them with few side effects. The primary ones: appetite loss, headaches, insomnia and moodiness as the meds wear off. Adds Dr. Caudill: “It’s kind of a doubleedged sword. The negatives are they might feel a little bit less like themselves, a little bit flat in their affects.”
When They Don’t Work
For some kids, the side effects far outweigh the benefits. Rob and Danielle Fox began to see signs of ADHD in their son when he was about 9 years old. (His parents asked that his real name not be used to avoid the stigma of the diagnosis). “He would leave the house in the morning, and two seconds later he’d come back because he’d forgotten his wallet,” says his father. “Then he’d go out and come back again. He’d forgotten his homework. Then it was his lunch. We’d write a list the night before of everything he had to take with him to school,
and he’d forget to look at the list. It was constant. Nothing worked.” Over the next six years the couple’s son was prescribed a variety of stimulants, including Adderall and Concerta. “All of them had awful side effects: dehydration, loss of appetite, headaches,” Rob recalls. “He wouldn’t eat all day and then he’d binge late at night.” Adds mom Danielle: “Finally, he literally vomited and then passed out on the baseball field one day. It was a result of not eating all day and being dehydrated. It was horrible.” Ultimately it was the Fox’s son who decided that stimulants were not for him. “Taking ADHD meds is essentially taking hard drugs,” the son now 17 years old, says. “Kids like myself feel pressured to take these meds by our parents and by our schools and the amount of work they require.” Adds the teenager: “The meds made me extremely depressed. I always had a dry mouth, got extreme headaches . . . but I could work like a horse. It’s an unnatural pill that made my personality change too. The only thing positive it produced was a robot-like effect when I was studying.” His parents supported his decision. “In the end, we’d rather manage than medicate our son,” Danielle says. Their son managed to “force myself to focus,” and his grades only dropped slightly without meds. Now he’s headed to college in Boston, where he plans to

take a full course load as well as play baseball. He vows he won’t return to meds to get him through it. “Nope, I want to avoid pharmaceutical products as much as I possibly can.”
Use vs. Abuse
Side effects are unique to each patient and no professional interviewed for this story suggests a cookie-cutter approach to a complex problem. But all agree that with or without side effects, Adderall lends itself to rampant abuse. Known as “the smart drug,” it can allow students without ADHD to study (or party) all night. The fact that it’s a prescription pill, not a street drug, creates the illusion of safety. Dr. Caudill reports that one in five students with an Adderall prescription gets asked to share their pills. And they do. Says Carter: “Ask any teen now, and they’ll say you can get Adderall on campus in under five minutes. You are taught that you can do better if you do Adderall, so why would you not?” So it feels good? “Absolutely it feels good. You feel like you are invincible,” Carter adds. While in school, she confesses she also got caught up in another dangerous trend, especially among girls: doing Adderall to stay thin. Local psychiatrists say that savvy students look up the symptoms of ADHD on the internet and complain of the symptoms to get worried parents to take them to doctors to get the meds. “I’ve heard stories of all kinds—mothers who dragged their kids to convince the doctor their kid has ADHD so the mother could take [Adderall],” Dr. Gelbart says.
Changing the Scrip(t)
Child and adolescent psychiatrist Kal Maniktala has seen stimulants result in improved school performance and more importantly, self-esteem. She points out that no medicine exists without potential side effects. But she finds herself worrying more about kids with-

out ADHD who seem to need stimulants to meet excessive pre-college demands. “I think we have to, as a society, really ask ourselves what we’re doing to kids and whether we should keep pushing them the way we are,” she says. “The bar keeps getting pushed up higher and higher.” Jamison Monroe is founder and CEO of Newport Academy, which offers both a residential and outpatient therapy program. Newport provides holistic treatment for teen substance abuse and other mental health problems. The majority of the boys who arrive at the residential program are on ADHD stimulants and at check-in, the meds are all left at the door. The academy forbids the use of stimulants and offers alternative therapies for ADHD including changes like a sugar-free and caffeine-free, health-conscious diet; daily exercise; and nine hours of sleep each night.
“Our society continues to be more and more enamored of a quick fix,” Monroe says. “As a society, we’ve decided that it’s too expensive to change the system so we have to change the kid.” With stimulants, legal or illegal, “What goes up must come down,” Monroe adds. One student who benefited from the academy’s approach is Carter, who transferred from an all-girls school to Newport Academy when she was 17. She says the organization “saved my life.” It also led to a career: She now works for Newport Academy doing clinical outreach. Before Newport, Carter says, “nobody ever sat me down to teach me good study skills, or that those executive functioning skills could be taught. [Stimulants] were always just the easier, softer solution. I think you have to have informed intervention. See if you can help your kid learn more study skills. Think outside the box.”

ounded in 1978, Peninsula Montessori Schools teach the whole child and allow a freedom of movement unlike traditional classrooms. The school offers two campuses: Rancho Palos Verdes serves 250 students ages 18 months to 12 years, and Redondo Beach serves 80 students ages 18 months to 5 years. In addition to academics, the school offers gymnastics, karate, dance, tennis, chess, music, art, computer, physical education, Chinese and Spanish classes. What would you like kids and parents to know about your school? “Montessori education is an approach to teaching the whole child. Children’s cognitive, social-emotional, movement and language skills are highly intertwined. The freedom of movement that is proving so important to children’s optimal functioning is prevalent in a Montessori classroom. Spontaneous self-discipline arises in the Montessori environment. It is calmer and more peaceful than traditional classrooms where children are made to stay seated.” What is your school’s mission? “Our goal is to foster a child’s natural inclination to learn in a nurturing and stimulating environment. In addition, we aim to promote appreciation and respect for self and others, foster independence and enthusiasm for learning.” Does homework in the Montessori classroom actually help students? “Homework in a Montessori setting is a very hot topic. We have had parents requesting more homework and parents who feel that any type of schoolwork done at home is abhorrent. Our main concern, of course, is how our students find a balance of freedom with responsibility. Knowing that our students move into middle school once they have completed our program, it is important that they learn how to focus their thoughts for a specific amount of time on homework, which will certainly be a requirement in later years. We also recognize that family time and extracurricular activities are very valuable. For that reason, the children’s homework is assigned once a week and may be completed as they see fit. It is always titrated to each child’s level of development and abilities.” Do children transition well from Montessori into traditional middle school? “A recent study published in the Journal of Science tracked 400 students in Milwaukee. Selected through a lottery system, half the students received public school education from kindergarten to high school graduation. The other half attended Montessori schools through fifth grade before transitioning into the public school system.
106
SOUTHBAY, APRIL 2016
At the end of the study, which was conducted between 1997 and 2007, test scores and GPAs were compared. Not only did the children who had received preschool through fifth-grade Montessori education outperform the other group in math and science test scores, they also graduated with higher GPAs. The conclusion of the study was that early Montessori education had a long-term impact on later public school performance. Montessori students have learned how to learn—where to find information on their own if they need it. They are accustomed to research and to tackling new subjects. These skills serve them well when they move to traditional schools.” What do kids love most about Peninsula Montessori Schools? “Our students know they are respected and cherished. They

learn that risk-taking is vital for achieving success. Through the use of Montessori materials, they are able to discover their own errors and self-correct their work. Without competition in the classroom, children help one another problem-solve in a collaborative manner.” How does your school make our community a better place for children? “The Montessori environment radiates harmony and respect. Children develop grace and courtesy skills beginning in the toddler classroom. They work together as stewards of their environment, doing their part to maintain order, such as returning didactic materials to their respective shelves after use and taking care of classroom pets and plants. The children learn to treat each other with kindness and take pride in helping a friend

in need. They learn to think constructively and creatively in a community while developing a strong sense of self. In addition, Montessori students actively take part in community service outside school. They volunteer with various charitable organizations and demonstrate an interest in the welfare of all living things. These are the lessons of the Montessori classroom that remain with our students as they make their way in the world.” What does it take to be the best? “We have a proven track record over the past 39 years, and all our teachers are fully credentialed. We offer our students a beautiful environment, rich with tools and guidance that will spark their natural curiosity and foster independence.”

ormed in 2010, The LA25 is a group of 25 entrepreneurial women and men based in the South Bay who operate their respective businesses from a platform of altruism. The LA25 Foundation for the Arts is an outgrowth of the group members’ focus on philanthropy. Through this foundation, The LA25 encourages the development and expansion of arts programs in all areas—especially in public schools throughout the South Bay. How does your business support children? “Our membership is dedicated to helping raise awareness and funding for South Bay arts and education through our 501(c)3, The LA25 Foundation for the Arts. Early exposure to the arts has been proven to have an important effect on our children’s development, improving brain development and critical thinking, helping them be better problem-solvers and communicators, which in turns helps them understand and share the world around them. We have hosted an annual art auction to raise funds for our work—the most recent of which was called ART310, held in October at The Point in El Segundo. We’re thankful to the guests, artists and local sponsors who share our passion for arts and education and have helped us exceed our funding goals each year.” Do you host events to help the public learn about important topics? “Last year’s art auction raised money for the Hermosa Beach and El Segundo Education Foundations to develop and support music programs throughout the South Bay. We partnered with Dr. Ron McCurdy, Grammy committee member and professor of music at the USC Thornton School of Music, to curate a music appreciation series for all fourth- and fifthgrade children in Hermosa Beach that includes five mini-concerts, each featuring a different musical genre performed by USC music students, which culminates in a student field trip to the Grammy Museum. The student concerts, hosted at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, are open to the public and designed to encourage engagement and discussion. An additional parents’ night is planned with Dr. McCurdy, who will speak on how music affects the brain. Our members also worked with the El Segundo Foundation to raise money to pay for all the string instruments at the El Segundo High School Music Program.” What motivated you to focus on making the community a better place for children? “We live and work here. Our children go to school here. We want them to have the best possible education and opportunities we can give them. We can’t expect the schools to do it all. Even the more affluent

schools within the South Bay are taking hits on funding, particularly when it comes to the arts. Everyone has to get involved and do what they can to make a difference.” What’s one way a local business can reach out and make a difference? “The LA25 Foundation for the Arts invites all local businesses to consider a tax-deductible gift to support our work or meet with us to discuss individualized opportunities for one of our events.” How do you build philanthropic relationships within our community? “We have developed long-term relationships and meaningful commitments from local corporate sponsors including Southbay magazine, Paolucci Salling & Martin Communciation Arts, Skechers, Erin Condren, Room and Board, Hermosa Design, New American Funding, Keller Williams Beach Cities, Shade Hotel, Chevron and many others who understand the wisdom of arts education and who are excited about furthering that cause with us. What is personalized instruction, and how does it compare to differentiated instruction? “Peninsula Heritage School has offered differentiated instruction for many years before it became the current buzz word in education. With our small class sizes—each with a teacher and associate teacher—our students work at one or even two grade levels ahead in certain subjects while still benefitting from the socialization of their same-aged peers in all other subject areas and at recess and PE. However, our school’s personalized instruction goes much deeper. We provide experienced faculty for very small groups of extremely advanced students. ummer Orthodontics is an orthodontic practice specializing in creating perfect smiles for children and adults. Dr. Summer and her team help patients with a wide range of orthodontic issues, such as crooked teeth, crowding, spacing, protrusion, narrow arch, over-bites, under-bites, cross bites and deep bites. They employ the latest in cutting-edge technology, such as invisible braces, metal braces and clear braces. Dr. Summer completed dental school at UCLA in 2001 and has been specializing in orthodontics for more than a decade. She opened the practice on June 21, 2010—Summer Solstice, of course! What would you like kids and parents to know about your business? “We LOVE working with kids! We have worked hard to create an atmosphere that is not only stress-free but also a fun place to be. It is not uncommon for kids (and parents) to comment on how good it feels to visit our office. In addition to the popular iPads, there are always activities and contests available for extra fun.” What benefits do children gain from the services your practice provides? “The beautiful smiles we create provide a life- time of confidence to our patients. This confidence carries over into every aspect of their lives. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have such a powerful impact. We take great pride in helping our patients become the best they can be.”
What’s most rewarding about your work? “The most rewarding aspect of my work is seeing the pride and confidence that a beautiful smile brings. My goal is to create smiles that generate lots and lots of compliments for my patients.” What do you like to do for fun, when you’re not at work? “Spending time with my family is what I like to do most. I also enjoy Pilates, yoga, cooking and travel.” Tell us about your family. “I married my husband, Matt, here in Manhattan Beach in 2007. We have three children—two wonderful daughters, Ahnika, 8, Tegan, 5, and Briggs, 21/2. It is a very exciting time for our family!”

How would you describe yourself as a principal? “I feel like it is not about me as the principal. It’s the dedicated teachers, the compassionate counselors and hardworking classified staff that make all of the difference on our campus. I know how important it is to surround myself with the right administrative team so we can work together in the best interest of our students.” What would you like kids and parents to know about your school? “At Palos Verdes High School, we strive to create a family-like atmosphere that encourages both excellence and balance for our students in their academic, athletic and extracurricular pursuits. It is critical that we guide each individual student to his/her best postsecondary goal, as we truly believe there is a college that fits every student.”

F
usion Academy is an accredited private middle and high school for grades 6–12. The educational experience features one-to-one classrooms that are completely customized and self-paced, and course material is presented in ways that suit students’ individual interests, strengths and challenges. Extracurricular groups and activities are offered on a regular basis. Fusion has been part of the South Bay since 2011, and most students and families come from this community. What do kids love most about your school? “Students tell us they love working
one-on-one with our teachers who also act as mentors. Classes proceed at the student’s pace and learning style. Our teachers do not have to spend time managing a classroom of 20 to 30 students so they really get to know each student and can help support them academically, socially and emotionally.” Does your school support charitable organizations that help children? “Last spring we held a spectacular event called Arts, Beats ‘n Eats. Students performed music and poetry and shared amaz-
ing artwork and photography created here in our art studio. We auctioned off some of the artwork and photos and donated the proceeds to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.” How do you encourage an active lifestyle for your students and their families? “We take advantage of our fantastic beach location and offer surf and paddleboarding as a P.E. option for our students. We also have a yoga studio on-site where students can take one-on-one yoga classes and really reap all the benefits that yoga has to offer.”

But our students also educate one another, bringing their hearts,

minds, perspectives and tireless curiosity to Idyllwild from all over the U.S. and the world. They develop lifelong friendships while being constantly enriched by the awareness that the same work of art can make a radically different impression on a different set of eyes or ears.” How does your school make our community a better place for children? “In many high schools, learning takes a back seat to peer pressure concerning what students look like or who their friends are. But Idyllwild Arts attracts students who do not pressure
one another to suppress their individuality— instead, they encourage each other to discover themselves.” What do kids love most about your school? “We believe that trying and failing are necessary in order to develop tolerance and independence and to grow as a person. Our community stands proudly in favor of taking risks and working hard, and this enables every child here to create his or her own story. This creation takes place in a natural setting whose unspoiled beauty has made it sacred to the local Native American peoples for many centuries.”

While the chef will never want to leave this paradise with beautiful new cabinetry, the expanded family room creates that coveted “Great Room” with lots of natural light. The irresistible flow continues past the French Doors to the covered patio, which overlooks a flat grassy, private yard, and has a multitude of fragrant fruit trees. Play with your kids on the Swing set, fire up the built-in Lynx BBQ and then relax in the 8-person spa. You’ll love the new stained bamboo flooring, the wood-burning fireplace in the living room, and the double pantry system. Finally, the remodeled bathrooms with sleek, luxurious materials. It doesn’t get any better than this. Quiet neighborhood with the best local schools. Views that calm and inspire. The perfect place to start and end your day.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST
“The only thing that is constant is change.” – Heraclitus
Gary Sweeney at his childhood home in Manhattan Beach.
“I
am not a South Bay native. That said, I was able to completely relate to the Sweeney House photo installation in Manhattan Beach. This is a celebration of family, community and memories that transcends our locality. The moments shared at the house are moments we have all experienced at one time or another within our own histories. It’s easy to lament the days gone by and the specifics of a time and place … but that’s the narrow view. Though the details change, at its heart the South Bay is much more than houses, hotspots and ocean views. It’s about the people who live here.” Jeff Berting, Southbay contributing photographer
