ust before our current issue went to press, GQ magazine named Manhattan Beach “America’s Best Beach for Chowing Down.” An awesome honor, and we couldn’t agree more. In fact, I think the booming food scene in Manhattan is only a small part of a much larger appetite in the South Bay. We really love food. And we love ALL kinds of food. And get this … you don’t have to be stuffy, snotty, refined or otherwise to appreciate our best eats and drinks. If it’s good, it’s good. And we’ve got plenty of goodness to please all kinds of palates. While many of us relish the wave of new, hip venues with delicious and trendy menu items and insanely creative cocktails, many of us are also content to grab an amazing burger, taco or slice of pizza at a local takeout joint. We do casual really well. But sometimes it’s also nice to get dressed up and enjoy an amazing meal crafted by an award-winning chef. That’s the South Bay way. This issue, we give you a plate full of reasons to celebrate our wonderful food scene. We asked 14 of our favorite gourmands, including chefs, wine pros, writers, bartenders, growers and more, to tell us where THEY like to eat and drink outside their own establishments. Some of their picks may surprise you and, hopefully, get you out on a new culinary adventure. Speaking of food exploration, we went to Aspen for a taste of Rocky Mountain hospitality and loved every bite. Closer to home, we caught up with the crazy team behind local wine label Rebel Coast and sought out the best ginger beer concoction in town. We even took the plunge off the coast for an exercise in spearfishing—and came up empty-handed, but we doubt you will after reading this issue. Cheers!

Glass Half Full The Trump Wine and Beer Festival returns with a taste of the South Bay’s best. WRITTEN BY DARREN

ELMS

I

remember it was about a year ago when I got an email from a friend. “Any way you can help me score a couple tickets to the Trump Wine and Beer Festival?” he wrote. “I really want to impress a date coming in from out of town.” Wow, what was I missing out on, that this friend needed an assist just to get in the door? Turns out Trump National Golf Club’s Wine and Beer Festival is not only one of the best epicurean events of the summer, it’s also one of the most coveted. (BTW, he got tickets.) Food trucks, pretty people, unlimited boutique wine and beer, plus that ridiculous view? I see the attraction. Lobsta Truck and Now approaching its The Grilled Cheese Truck … yes! sixth outing on August 24, the festival will no Angel City Brewery, doubt top last year’s Big Sky Brewing success with even more Co. and El Segundo food and beverage Brewing Co., to name vendors, amazing a few entertainment and biddable raffle items. Uber’s a sponsor … Best of all, proceeds don’t drink from the event go and drive! to one of the coolest organizations in the South Bay: the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. That crew goes above and beyond each year to keep the Peninsula’s natural integrity intact and beautiful for generations to come. I can’t think of a better way to support them than to raise a cool glass of sauvignon blanc with a few good friends. I’ll see you there. August 24, 12 to 4 p.m., trumpnationallosangeles.com 

Q&A | WHERE WE LIVE

Rebels With a Cause If you thought the wine business was only for grown-ups, then you haven’t met the Redondo crew behind Rebel Coast Winery.

One of the more hilarious things I’ve seen online lately (and no, it’s not those YouTube cat videos that are bafflingly popular) is, in fact, a wine website. How can you not love a winemaker with a big dream, if only half a mustache? How

Wine is definitely NOT SUPPOSED TO BE SERIOUS.”

INTERVIEWED BY

BONNIE GRAVES

oursouthbay.com

can you not love a bubbly wine with a label that glows in the dark for, well, nightstand consumption? Brothers Chip and AJ Forsythe were well-intentioned Cal Poly undergrads who caught the wine bug and infected others with their passion for unpretentious, populist products. Meet the team from Rebel Coast Winery: Chip, AJ, VP of sales Doug Burkett and COO Kate Seiberlich—proof positive that you can make and enjoy wine without a whiff of snootiness and without sacrificing sacred access to SoCal surf.

Isn’t wine supposed to be serious business? You guys at Rebel Coast Winery seem to be having way too much fun. Chip: Wine is definitely not supposed to be serious. And sadly, boring old rich people made it that way years ago. What brought you to the South Bay? I see you’re buying grapes from Napa and Sonoma, so why set up shop down here? AJ: That was a rhetorical question, right? Have you seen the nightlife of the farm towns you just mentioned? Chip & Doug: Have you seen the women down here? Kate: Have you seen the men down here? Two brothers, a lot of mustaches and a dream ... so Chip and AJ were Cal Poly wrestlers who went “Sideways” and got into the wine racket. How did that go over with the parents? Chip: Dad laughed, and Mom cried. The old punch line goes something like this: Wanna make $1 million in the wine business? Just invest $10 million. Any advice for people fantasizing about changing careers and entering the world of grapes? AJ: DON’T DO IT. But in

all seriousness, we started very, very, very small, which allowed us to grow organically and to steer clear of debt. Part of your success model is affordably priced wines that are memorably tongue-incheek, pun intended. Pink Panda bubbles are equipped with a handy glow-in-thedark label, for example, for “you and your loved one to find in the dark.” How serious is the bubbly behind that glowing panda? Chip: It’s very serious. Our wine is the only reason we can get away with goofing around so much; it’s because our wine is better than 90% of the juice out there. We make wines that we can drink at night, not wines that were made to win pretentious, snooty wine competitions. The Pink Panda is an Alexander Valley pinot noir made in the demi-sec style with Charmat technique. Growth, growth, growth. Are you focusing mostly on restaurants or on consumers? Who is the ideal drinker of Rebel Coast wines? Doug: We’re definitely focused on the consumer. We’ve built a cult following from a new generation of wine drinkers! Kate: We’ve noticed, since we have made the end-consumer the first

priority when making our wines, that the restaurants and wine shops then always follow. Some of your wines are blends of different grapes. Explain to our readers what the thought process is there. AJ: If you’re talking different varietals, then we’ve had some friends with great vineyards, and we’ve been blending these varietals (cabernet sauvignon and syrah) for a while. When those grapes get into bed with each other ... it’s fireworks, baby. What’s the ideal South Bay food pairing with a Rebel Coast wine ... and perhaps a pretty lady. (We notice you have rather a few working with you these days ... hmmm.) AJ: You keep your hands to yourself! Chip: The Rockefeller’s grilled fish tacos and seared ahi tacos ... holy schmoly, they pair so good—just like a cougar consoling a 23-year-old whose girlfriend just broke up with him. Well, I am afraid I can’t speak for the cougars, but these wines are fun, affordable and available at a fine South Bay establishment near you. Perfect for summertime sipping. ARTS | WHERE WE LIVE

Endless Creativity

John Van Hamersveld makes new waves with his art—this time, even closer to home. WRITTEN BY KELLY

I

DAWSON

t’s been a lifetime since painter and graphic designer John Van Hamersveld was just a surfer kid growing up in the South Bay. He remembers his parents drawing in their home near the swells of Lunada Bay and seeing beatniks and Hells Angels off the Hermosa Pier. He recalls how two hours of art classes a day at El Segundo High School changed his life. And now, 50 years since his iconic poster for Endless Summer made him an international artist, he’s back in the neighborhood. Since the sorbet-hued image for the 1966 movie became synonymous with surf culture, John has made a legacy as layered as waves on the beach. He famously created album covers for legendary bands—such as The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St. and The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour. He recently crafted a psychedelic LED spectacle on Fremont

oursouthbay.com

Street in Las Vegas. And a few months after opening an art gallery this year, his work will be featured in the nearby Topaz San Pedro office building, close to where it all began. “I continue moving forward, which is not what the typical gallery artist does,” he says. The mural, which is scheduled to be unveiled this summer, will be on a massive, 10-foot-by-20-foot canvas in the new building’s lobby. Its look is akin to the bright aesthetic of his “Waterworks” series. While the specifics are being kept under wraps for now, Topaz’s developers hope that it will showcase the building as a place for likeminded, creative talent. “We’re trying to appeal to the local community,” says Tim Vaughan, senior vice president at CBRE—a commercial real estate firm—and one of the top-leasing brokers at Topaz. Located on Sixth Street, where surrounding galleries and restaurants have

similarly been transforming the area into a stylish hub, Topaz has ultra-modern floor plans with views of the waterfront. Electric vehicle charging stations and custom-made bikes are also part of the trendy setting. As a member of Palos Verdes’ artist community and a father to surfers, Tim knew of John’s history—and, of course, his signature dark hat and round glasses. Tim and his colleagues commissioned the artist after others submitted their ideas. He thinks that John’s contribution will be the start of Topaz’s budding reputation for work and play. To John, this particular work is yet another instance of hard-earned experience. Future onlookers can admire the various concepts in the piece, which include Dutch and surreal influences, or they could form viewpoints based on their own histories. “You know more than what you can understand,” he says. “That’s the beauty of art. As someone who is turning 73, I’m in that stage.” 

Where there’s a will, there’s a whale. Locals work to transform Marineland’s forgotten entrance sculpture from beached to beautiful. WRITTEN BY CHRIS

F

amilies, ocean-life enthusiasts and other visitors found it a bit of an ordeal traveling to and finding Marineland of the Pacific in 1954. The world’s largest oceanarium of its time was located in a spectacular setting deep in the south end of the Palos Verdes Peninsula coastline. It was worth it once you arrived, though, and was like nowhere else on earth. It was another world. Marineland beat Disneyland by a cool 365 days, making it California’s first major theme park. It cost nearly $3 million to build. The park had been having its ups and downs financially after its first few years and needed something new, exciting and fantabulous to bring in the crowds. Enter Bubbles. Bubbles became a huge, instant hit for the park after being caught in 1957. At 13 feet in length, the first female pilot whale ever captured and displayed in public found immediate and worldwide attention. She was drawing them in. So popular and long-lasting was the whale’s success, a monumental likeness was ordered, designed and cast—twice her size at 26 feet long and 7 feet wide. There could have been worse ways to exploit the worldwide popularity created by the loveable phenomenon. The captivating sculpture was designed by Leonard Bessom and installed permanently at Marineland’s updated 1975 entrance, welcoming visitors while looming over their cars as they (finally!) ended their long drive finding the place. The statue was beautifully produced in black-hued fiberglass and from every angle looked as magnificent and overwhelmingly powerful as its subject—while still retaining the lighthearted and elegant playfulness Bubbles’ fans had grown to love. The solid and sturdy installation and placement was

AS YOU WERE | WHERE WE LIVE

executed with a flair and panache worthy of William Pereira’s original 1954 structures located within the park. Two dolphins were added near the statue’s base, swimming cooperatively alongside. Now this was an entrance! The sculpture, along with the 414-foot-tall Sky Tower (another Marineland attraction, which offered the most dramatic view of the surrounding coast ever experienced, added to the park in 1966) stood together for years. Unfortunately, Marineland was infamously purchased and rapidly closed amongst much controversy in 1987. Talk about abandonment issues … all the whales and other substantial species were shipped down the 405 to San Diego’s Sea World. Other marine life was distributed among various local outlets. All the trees and shrubs were left immediately without water, putting the drought-resistant species to their test. Green leaves faded, browned and died. The staff was let go, and the fun stopped. Not even the locals found it appealing to visit. The huge exhibition tanks were dismantled and removed along with any other potentially dangerous structures. What was left of the park became a ghost town that decayed over two decades. The 1995 demolition of the Sky Tower left Marineland of the Pacific sunk for good. Film studios saw a great opportunity, both beautiful and cheap, to film MTV beach shows and the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The statue of Bubbles remained, keeping her guard, for nearly two years after the abrupt and thoughtless closing of the park. What a gift that it remained in place for as long as it did. Finally, after vandals had begun to leave their mark on Bessom’s work, the Rancho Palos Verdes Civic Center took the statue in 1988, storing it behind the center’s buildings and pathways. Enter Bob. Robert Craig was hiking with his daughter this January near the RPV Civic Center’s backlot and happened upon the monument. It was on its side and damaged, left out in the open in a storage area behind the center—beached and forgotten, sun-ravaged and dry. He knew instantly what it was, having seen the sculpture for years in its original location. Robert posted a photograph of the sorry find on Facebook, and things went viral. Responses were received instantly, asking how one might help and where donations could be sent to help get Bubbles off the ground. Robert contacted his friend Clarke McTaggart, who shared an immediate interest in the project, and the two began working on what could be done with the iconic treasure. After much diligence and perseverance, Robert and Clarke contacted Diana McIntyre, the docent program coordinator and curator with the RPV Interpretive Center. She also happens to be known as the queen of Marineland archives and worked as educational consultant at the park throughout the ‘80s. Teaching and educating people with research rather than emotion has always driven Diana—and is the path she continues to follow today. She agreed with Robert and Clarke that the RPV Interpretive Center would be the perfect place to re-install the monument and allow Bubbles to get back up on her tail to continue her watch over the Palos Verdes coast forever. With good and well-meant intentions comes reality, and reality means money. Fiberglass is stronger stuff than one might guess, but the repairs needed for the piece and its permanent installation costs will be considerable. As of now, efforts are being made by Diana, Robert and Clarke to place the statue in its deserved final and everlasting breach. Please stay in touch and participate in the public outreach process for Lower Point Vicente Park and the potential restoration and placement of Bubbles—things are developing quickly! 

And I love the oyster selection: Pacific Gold, Northern Cross, Rocky Reef, etc. The Hamachi dish is one of my favorites—the serrano gives it a slight spice, but the ponzu balances it so well. When two contributors take the plunge with South Bay spearfishermen, they take home much more than sea bass. WRITTEN BY STEFAN

SOUTHBAY, SUMMER 2014

n a Sunday morning last March, 33-year-old Clark McNulty pointed at the shore as we cut through the ocean chop and said, “Having the boat is a pure breakaway from all of that.” There were collective nods of agreement from the other five men on board as they tinkered with their wetsuits, weight belts and masks. I wanted to say something but couldn’t—the deck swayed, and with each dip I pleaded with my stomach to please, please not get seasick. Not now. Not here. Clark, the affable owner of HookBuzz.com—a spearfishing and diving company—piloted his 29-foot dive boat away from King Harbor and toward the steep cliffs of Palos Verdes, chatting away happily about white sea bass, as ocean spray salted our clothing. The diesel engine droned on as the boat swayed; each time my stomach lurched. The morning was crisp and cool. A layer of hazy smog sat far offshore to the starboard side, and on the port side the South Bay was only just starting its day. Our goals were simple: If we could catch white sea bass, we would. But Clark noted that our prey, a popular sport fish that belongs to the croaker family (yes, you can actually hear them croaking underwater), is notoriously skittish. Even a burst of bubbles underwater is enough to scare the fish away. Though South Bay spearfishermen often hunt a wide variety of local game fish, the white sea bass is highly sought after due to its taste and its elusive nature—which is why it’s one of Clark’s favorite fish to hunt. Fish aside, our more realistic goal was to jump in and get a taste of spearfishing: donning a thick dive suit, throwing on a waistcrunching weight belt and seeing, firsthand, what it was like to freedive down amongst the kelp forests of Palos Verdes. We stopped the boat at the “secret spot,” one that was supposed to be in the midst of a thick kelp bed teeming with scaly ocean life. But the kelp was gone, ripped away by large surf. “I’ve never seen it before like this,” Clark said, disappointed. We motored on to another spot and stopped. While everyone else was busy suiting up, I had a slight disagreement with my stomach off the starboard side. Head swimming, I squeezed into my bulky, seven-millimeter dive suit and followed Clark into the water. We stayed far away from the starboard side—far, far away. Clark swam with me to the edge of a spot of kelp, and he laid it out simply: Spearfishing is about more than hunting. It’s about experiencing the ocean and everything it has to offer. He told me to take several deep breaths (one of the main dangers of spearfishing is blacking out from lack of oxygen) and then dive straight down, using a strand of kelp as a guideline to keep diving. The frigid water seeped into my suit and clawed along my back as I plunged down, and when I looked about I saw sunlight shimmering through blue. Kelp rose up 20 feet from the unseen bottom, forming tree-like groves. Schools of fish, most only a few inches long, darted in and out of their shadows. Clark swam ahead of me, steady and calm, completely at home. After swimming down a dozen feet or so, he signaled to go back up. On the surface, Clark bobbed up and down as he said that his hope—his main goal—for all this was for me to see what it was like down below. He wanted me to understand why he, his family and friends all spearfish. And I did. My stomach didn’t, even at the end

oursouthbay.com

of the day, but I understood. A few weeks later, Clark and I met up at Hot’s Kitchen in Hermosa. I was embarrassed about the seasick business and I apologized profusely, but Clark only brushed it off. When it comes to the ocean and being on a boat, Clark has seen it all. He said I was actually pretty stealthy about the whole thing—I took that as a compliment. Clark grew up in the South Bay, primarily in Palos Verdes. He says his father, Bob McNulty, was a Navy SEAL during Vietnam, and he made sure Clark and his younger brother, Kirk, spent a lot of their free time in the water. “My dad was a big component of me getting into the water,” says Clark. They’d often sail to Avalon on Santa Catalina Island and fish for most of the weekend. Naturally things progressed from there—the two McNulty brothers started spending even more time in the water during their high school years, occasionally spearfishing when they had the time. “We were 14 or 16, and we were getting out on our own. It was sort of fun, and we had that whole ocean environment to play in.” Once they reached their 20s, the brothers started testing their diving skills. They swam out further and further, diving off kelp beds and going after bigger sport fish like white sea bass. The challenge of the hunt proved immediately alluring to Clark, especially since spearfishing isn’t as easy as simply firing off a spear and snagging a fish. “You don’t see the big fish every time. You don’t just go out there and see one. They’re very skittish.” Everything leading up to the water time also has to go smoothly. “When you pull up on a spot, you have to be quiet, drop the anchor quiet, no music. You get superstitious; you have your routines. You want to make sure you do everything responsibly too,” says Clark. The challenges of hunting aside, Clark also makes a point of mentioning that spearfishermen have to be mindful of harvesting local fish correctly. Since he’s grown up and fished in the area throughout his life, he’s seen that most game fish—especially his preferred fish of choice—are smaller than they used to be. “Things get fished out. That’s why it’s important to drive more awareness towards the Redondo grow-out station.” Richard Ford works as a dedicated volunteer at the Redondo Beach LA Conservation Corps’ SEA Lab, which assists with a broader, statewide white sea bass restoration project. The lab functions as a grow-out for hatchery-bred white sea bass, and every year the volunteers release the fish in the waters off Redondo to help stabilize the region’s local population. “It’s awfully good eating,” says Rich about the sea bass. “It’s great for commercial purposes.” However, roughly half a century ago, local sea bass populations were nearly devastated because of their commercial value. According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the white sea bass population dropped dramatically through the 1950s and ‘60s, and stricter regulations had to be introduced in order to keep the bass from being overfished. “When we started killing them off, we were hurting a recreational industry. Any time you take anything out of the food chain, you’re going to have a negative impact on the ocean environment,” says Richard. “They are a sizeable fish—excellent eating,” says Terry Maas. The avid spearfisherman, one whom Clark insisted I get in touch with, went on to mention that the fish was practically decimated locally by fishermen using controversial gill nets during the mid-20 th century. “They would use spotter planes,” says Terry. “[The white sea bass] were so thick they would change the color of the kelp bed. During the day they are very alert. At night they would go into these nets that would drown them indiscriminately.”

SUMMER 2014, SOUTHBAY

73

Increased regulations, especially those concerning the size of bass that were ready for harvesting, helped protect the waning population. “Now sea bass are becoming more prolific,” says Terry. “Now the populations are maintaining a good level.” Furthermore, Terry adds that spearfishing is a very conservationminded sport: The average spearfisherman sets out with a particular fish in mind, and they have to spend an exorbitant amount of effort trying to track it down. If they’re too noisy or if they miss their shots, they won’t bag their fish. “We let a lot go,” says Terry. “Fish and Game recognizes that, and they let us dive where fishermen can’t go. We know what we’re going

74

SOUTHBAY, SUMMER 2014

to get. It’s a very selective form of harvesting. We can target our species. The last thing we want to do is clean it out.” Terry also points out that spearfishing is a valuable part of California’s history. Our state’s first watermen and women would spearfish when the surf was minimal, and they’d usually only catch what they needed—not to mention that the sheer challenge of the hunt often kept them occupied during the flat summer months. At Hot’s, Clark points out that the success ratio for snagging white sea bass is low, hovering around 10%. And while Clark enjoys the hunt and the thrill of acquiring a sizable catch, he also believes that simply being out in the ocean and experiencing its beauty firsthand is

Deep Blue Harvest

one of the main draws of spearfishing. “We just appreciate the environment. And when we harvest something, we do it within the regulations, and we do it with the most respect possible,” says Clark. Spearfishing has been an important pastime for the McNulty family, even more so in 2014. Kirk, Clark’s brother, passed on earlier this year, and Clark has made an effort to revisit the spots where he and his brother grew up fishing. The first site we visited on our dive trip, the one that had lost its kelp forest, was one of the McNulty family’s favorite spots. “[Kirk] was a true waterman. He was the one who got me into a lot of things in

76

SOUTHBAY, SUMMER 2014

life. One of the last successful dives we had together was at that spot.” For Clark, spearfishing is an integral part of the South Bay’s culture. It’s a part of the region’s history and highlights our connection to the ocean. Our watermen and women are not ones for wanton destruction of our ocean’s resources, but instead they find ways to harvest it respectfully while also enjoying its innate beauty. Clark talked more about that last successful spearfishing trip with his brother, saying that Kirk managed to snag a 44-pound white sea bass. He’s glad that he has that memory of his brother and that last perfect session. “It was one of our last dives together, and it was him knocking down that quality fish. I’m so stoked we had that day.” 

of good building of the ‘50s or those that provided style that worked.” “I knew as soon as I walked in the door and felt the charm of the house that I was home,” says Jack. The house needed remodeling, but it had good bones and good light. For Jack, the owner of Nelson Development, the project was easy and fun. Longtime friend John Juge of Juge Design Group weighed in on some of the design elements, while Jack’s firm executed the construction. With five adult children and grandchildren arriving, the Nelsons needed a home that could accommodate a crowd. “We have big family dinners on Sundays, so we needed to be able to have everyone over and feel comfortable,” says Kerry. By pushing out the back of the house to accommodate two A-frame-type structures, the Nelsons gained square footage, ceiling height and great light. Although the spaces are designated, the house feels large, with an open floor plan that flows from the Dutch door at the front to the row of glass doors and windows that line the back of the house. “We felt strongly about preserving those features

that were either hallmarks of good building of the ‘50s or those that provided style that worked.” Plaster walls are luxurious and expensive, so the Nelsons preserved those where they could. The original windows in the front of the house were also preserved so that the 1950s bungalow look was retained. However, they took the opportunity to raise the ceilings and create the illusion of more space and more light in the house. Beamed ceilings provide a substantive counterpoint to the rich, mahogany-stained hardwood floors. The original brick fireplace anchors the central living space so that the total aesthetic is one that reads beach-style Craftsman. With a crowd of at least 11 people for dinner every Sunday night, a large, functional kitchen was imperative. Thick slabs of honed Carrere marble and crisp white cabinets create a clean slate. Pendant lights and bronze fixtures echo the dark floors and beamed ceilings. The dining room table can be expanded to seat the growing Nelson clan. “I always wanted a round dining table, and this one works perfectly,” says Kerry.

Designer Jane Calvert helped Jack and Kerry merge their tastes and styles into a uniform look that flows throughout the home. The wing of bedrooms is designed just like the living spaces in neutral tones with lots of daylight and hardwood floors. “This is the first time we haven’t had carpet, and we love it—but we had no idea how much dog and cat hair the carpet was hiding!” says Kerry. Although they vacuum most days, the house feels cleaner without carpets. The large backyard retains many of the original plants. From orange trees and eucalyptus trees to herbs and flowers, the yard feels established. Kerry has created potting tables where she can work with her grandchildren so they can grow up learning to appreciate nature as well as create in the process. “After raising a family in a large home, we thought it might be challenging to downsize and still make a house feel large. But this house is perfect,” says Jack. For this clan entering their third generation, a beach bungalow means the whole family is finally home. 

Best known as a ski town with an affluent edge, the emergence of an enviable epicurean culture puts Aspen on the map in delicious new ways. WRITTEN BY DARREN

n my short drive from the Aspen airport to the St. Regis, my driver offered me a bright and tasty apple to snack on. He noted the scarcity of locally grown fresh produce during the snowy winter season, something this farmers market-minded Californian clearly took for granted. But that’s what makes Aspen’s thriving

culinary scene all the more magical. Three hours from Denver and covering only 3.5 square miles at nearly 8,000 feet, this isolated ski haven not only attracts top chef talent from around the globe but also now hosts one of the most anticipated food events in the country. Silver mining may have built this city some 125 years ago, but fine dining may be its golden destiny.

EVENTFUL ASPEN Aspen is not only a great place to visit but a terrific destination for weddings and other special events. In addition to the St. Regis, Aspen Institute and Pine Creek Cookhouse, many local venues will happily open their doors for your party. One of the most exclusive is the Caribou Club. This private destination is where local celebrities and loyal members like to let loose on a nightly basis. It’s also home to the BEST cake I’ve ever eaten in my life. Where to Stay

The St. Regis Aspen excels not only in style and service but also as home to some of the most exciting eating in town. It’s no wonder Food & Wine magazine chose the property to host their flagship Chef’s Club restaurant. A small selection from their coveted list of best new chefs consult and curate new menu items, in collaboration with the resort’s culinary team, to create a divine dining experience. Additional venue options include the brand new Trecento Quindici Decano, a flavorful blend of Italian and American cuisine, and Shadow Mountain Lounge for après-ski adventures by a roaring fireplace. Naturally, when you’re not on the slopes or indulging in amazing

dishes and drinks, you’ll find time to pamper yourself in the recently remodeled Reméde Spa or take an afternoon nap in your plush guest suite. 315 E. Dean Street, 970-920-3300, stregisaspen.com

What to Do

Food & Wine’s most anticipated event, the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, only happens once a year in June, but your tastebuds will tell you it’s well worth the wait. With celebrity chefs like Mario Batali, Giada De Laurentiis and Tom Colicchio—to name a few, the Grand Corchon pork feast, and plenty of after-hours wining and dining, it’s no wonder this incredible event sells out year after year. foodandwine.com/classic

For example, we find that about half of our clients who are homeowners do not have an umbrella policy. Anyone who owns a house or other assets should have a minimum $1,000,000 umbrella policy. A rate of $200 to $300 per year is a small price to pay to have the protection you need when unexpected situations arise. Also, it’s very important for each parent in the household to have some level of Life Insurance. You never know when an unexpected occurrence could happen. We work with our clients to find out what they would need if their spouse were to pass. It’s important for us to educate our clients about the coverage they need and why they need it. The same goes for business clients. There are a lot of coverages overlooked by agents when insuring a business. One

big loss could destroy a business if you are not insured properly. Some of the most common lawsuits affecting business owners today are wrongful termination, discrimination and sexual harassment. It is imperative that businesses have

Why does your industry appeal to you? “Working with ethical companies to provide good jobs. ‘Business’ sometimes gets an undeserved rap. One result of the American private enterprise system is good jobs that provide good

How do you distinguish yourself from the competition? Denise M. Guzman: “I am very thoughtful in my approach, no matter if it is a business, trust or estate planning client. I take the time to get to know who the client is as a person, their threshold of risk, and over the past 30+ years I’ve learned how to ask the right questions. The client doesn’t always know which facts are relevant to their case, so I learned to read body language when communicating with a client. The more I know the person, the better I am at protecting them.” How do clients benefit from working with your team? Denise M. Guzman: “We actually work in a team environment. There

is always more than one attorney familiar with a case. If a client calls when the lead attorney is unavailable, there is always someone present in the office ready to assist the client in their matter.” What are some ways you provide top-notch customer service? Richard Luftman, Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Attorney: “My clients know that I am a passionate advocate for them. I continue to strive to bring them peace of mind by being a great listener and communicator and by making client service a high priority.” What is the biggest benefit that your clients gain from working with you? Edward Powell, Busi-

Anticipating, acknowledging and addressing the interests of all the parties to a transaction not only protects my clients’ particular legal interests but also ensures that the business relationship is on sound footing and a positive experience for everyone.” Give us a great piece of advice on how to protect ourselves and our families.
