Testimonials Daniel is an excellent realtor and I’m thrilled to now be settling my family into our amazing new home in Hermosa Beach. We purchased our home during the height of the Covid pandemic and Daniel went above and beyond to arrange showings of homes and to ensure that the var-

We encountered a few hiccups along the way - financing took considerably longer than expected due to Covid and other unusual circumstances - but Daniel easily rolled with the punches and worked everything out with the sellers each time an unexpected issue arose. I think it’s highly likely that, without Daniel, we would

few years ago, I had elective surgery to reduce the risk of cancer in the future. It was a difficult decision, but one that I’m sure will bring more years of good health. I was alerted to the need for this surgery after my doctor suggested a colonoscopy earlier than the recommended age of 50. I’m certainly glad he did. He probably saved my life. And now that I have this knowledge, I can make intelligent decisions about my health moving forward. I mention all this to advocate the importance of listening to your body and seeking tests or treatment when needed. Even if no underlying illnesses or conditions are found, just knowing what’s happening with your body can offer peace of mind. In this issue, we uncover the stories of six South Bay residents taking control of their wellness and inspiring others to do the same. As usual, we also feature some of the best doctors and health practitioners in the area. Get to know them and their practices. You may discover one or two who are a good fit for you.

Model

of Health A RECOGNIZABLE FACE IN WELLNESS, STEF CORGEL BRANCHES OUT IN OTHER ENTREPRENEURIAL DIRECTIONS. WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHED BY KAT MONK

S

tef Corgel was leg-pressing the coffee table when she was 8 months old. Nicknamed “Manhattan Beef” by her parents, she practically ran by her first birthday—when the majority of kids are just starting to walk. Throughout her younger years, Stef stayed laser-focused on both academics and sports. AYSO soccer, Manhattan Beach Youth Basketball and Little League softball kept her busy throughout the school year. Summers were filled with serving as a Junior Lifeguard, which provided a healthy mix of cross-training and knowledge of ocean safety. She is proud to have been a Los Angeles County Junior Lifeguard for the maximum nine years, including two years as a prestigious cadet. By 18, she qualified to become a lifeguard for the county. “The feeling of camaraderie in the towers and on the sand is indescribable for me,” she says. “When watching a sunset from the tower at the end of a long day, I still pinch myself. This is real life. This is my home.” Stef played Division 1 basketball at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and also Division 2 at Cal State University, Monterey Bay. There she majored in kinesiology—the study of human movement and how it impacts health and well-being. After college, she played basketball overseas. Although her goal was to pursue medical school, her path changed one summer day while recertifying for the lifeguard program as a sophomore in college. While running on the beach, she was scouted and advised to connect with an athletic modeling agency. Working as a model for the last 13 years, she is proud to represent the exercise line Vuori, which has a store in downtown Manhattan Beach. “If anything is unique about me, it is my philosophy of being exactly where you are and feeling it all,” she shares. These days, Stef is not only a model but also a fitness trainer, entrepreneur, athlete, spokesperson, content creator and influencer. She says that as a fitness professional, “I can sit and preach the importance of training effectively, proper nutrition, sleep and continued education, but I have found that the best way to make an impact in someone’s life is to simply be a good listener.” When she began her career, diversity was not common in advertising. Stef is proud to represent women of mixed-Asian descent.

24

She is also excited to be on the cusp of the integration of different cultures into marketing and advertising campaigns. Stef has modeled on campaigns for many major sportswear companies and sports tech and fitness equipment brands. With the prominence and ever-evolving nature of social media, her sports modeling career has morphed into a hybrid sports modelinfluencer job. She has more than 50,000 followers on Instagram. “You never know who you are impacting,” she says. “Especially in times of self-doubt and questioning my purpose, I’m reminded to think bigger than self and focus my efforts on making one person’s life healthier—body and mind.” Although she is determined and compassionate, she is also grounded and has not let her career go to her head. “I truly delight in my own imperfections, and I’m motivated when I see areas where I can grow or help another reach their potential. I’ve allowed the perfectionist ways of my early adulthood to melt away at this point.” Stef is especially proud of the opportunity to impact women’s lives through athletic campaigns and teaching virtual fitness classes. She has taught classes in front of 10,000 women at Tone It Up live events. When a fan stops her on the street and says, “Thank you for helping me stay fit throughout quarantine,” she feels the true impact of how her work helps others. Little by little, she has started to phase out of modeling and into new entrepreneurial endeavors. In addition to being a virtual and in-studio fitness trainer, she is also the co-owner of natural deodorant company Hume Supernatural and a brand ambassador for several sustainable wellness companies. “It is a very rewarding feeling to know that all of my years spent as a model were actually crash courses in business and advertising,” she says. This summer she will launch her first swimwear collaboration centered around active, outdoorsy women. It consists of mixand-match pieces designed to fit and flatter women in all the ways they move. Stef’s friends and colleagues call her the Energizer Bunny. Whether she’s running around the South Bay, lifting weights, doing hot yoga, swimming laps, surfing ankle biters, struggling through reformer Pilates or hiking with friends, she’s always having fun. ■

EL SEGUNDO’S GATE 14 TAKES FITNESS TO THE NEXT LEVEL BY KNOCKING DOWN MENTAL HURDLES, OFFERING INTENSE TRAINING SESSIONS AND PROVIDING A STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY. WRITTEN BY AMBER KLINCK | PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANE O'DONNELL

“The workouts have nothing to do with your body. Everything that happens with your body is a side effect of what we’re trying to do psychologically every day: make this applicable to your life in bigger ways.”

I

t can be intimidating walking into a new gym or fitness studio. Maybe you’re not quite familiar with the equipment, you don’t know your way around the space. And if you’ve been assured ahead of time that the next hour will be the toughest part of your day, you might be doubting your capabilities. All of those pesky anxieties were rearing their ugly heads at the start of a midweek group session at El Segundo’s Gate 14 when something remarkable happened: People actually walked up and said hello to the new kid in class. “The ingredients for every gym are the same,” explains Gate 14 cofounder Alfred (Al) Brown. “You’ve got resistance, intensity, duration. There are only so many different ways you can move your body. What we try to do here is completely remove the aspects of other gyms that, to me, are uncomfortable. What we try to do is create community.” Now despite this welcoming mentality, don’t expect the trainers at Gate 14 to go easy on you. “At about minute 26, you’re going to have a choice to back off or to push through,” Al notes. “And it’s going to be up to you. No one’s going to know if you’re doing that or not except you.” Which is true. But just when you think you’re spent and somebody next to you says, ‘You’ve got this,’ that word community starts to mean something. And then the last thing you want to do is give up—especially on yourself. Al didn’t have big plans to start a gym. His childhood buddy, business partner and cofounder of Gate 14 Ediz Basol gave him a nudge. Both South Bay natives, they found themselves back in the Beach Cities around the same time as each other. Al had been enrolled in a doctorate program at USC; Ediz had just moved back from San Francisco. “I’ve always been known as the crazy workout person,” Al notes. So when he found an apartment near a massive hill—the top of which has a Chevron sign labeled Gate 14—he thought, “This is perfect. I can

SOUTHBAY HEALTH I 2022

run this hill over and over again, and I can put my workout stuff in the garage. It’s going to be great.” It wasn’t long before people started asking Al to join his workouts. It started with friends—some of whom were training for long-distance endurance goals—and then eventually curious bystanders looking for a challenge. “When you go work out with Al, you realize you haven’t been working out very

32

SOUTHBAY HEALTH I 2022

hard,” explains Ediz. “I’m not talking trash on anyone’s workout. As long as people are moving, it’s great. But what he’s able to pack into an hour is unlike anything I’ve ever done.” It was clear Al had a training style people were drawn to. He was offering 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. training sessions in his garage five days a week. Ediz thought: Why not take it to the next level? “No, I’m good,” Al told Ediz when he sug-

gested they open a gym. And Ediz replied, “Well, you already opened a gym, so why don’t we just do it for real?” Gate 14 celebrated its El Segundo grand opening in 2018. Things were going well, and the guys were excited because they’d found their stride. And then COVID-19 hit. They found creative ways to keep their members moving, like offering training sessions outdoors. “We had to start adapting,” Al says, “and

I think what we did for our community was really important.” Today the Gate 14 team is back to business as usual with their focus on the principles that drive them. “The workouts have nothing to do with your body. Everything that happens with your body is a side effect of what we’re trying to do psychologically every day: make this applicable to your life in bigger ways,” Al says. “If this can be the

toughest part of your day, great. Then the rest of your day is going to be easy.” In a society obsessed with pleasure, convenience and ease, the Gate 14 team asks its members to get out of their comfort zone for a while. “Life is hard; people are going through stuff all the time,” Ediz says. “But if you can have that same mentality of just taking the first step and knowing it’s going to be uncomfortable—whether it’s your

inbox or things you’ve got going on with your kids—that same mentality is helpful across the board for everyday life.” But hey, if you’re just looking to get faster, stronger, leaner, you’d be hard-pressed to find a workout that pushes you more. “If we can get people to shift their mindset, then all the physical stuff follows suit,” Ediz notes. “Change your mind, and you can change your body.” ■

70 Years of Saving Lives. Daily. 2022 is the 70th Anniversary of The Lundquist Institute. Here is a sampling of what took place during these 70 years: • The successful fertilization through artificial implantation of the ovum, which would lead to the first ovum transfer birth 20 years later. • The first paramedic model and first nurse practitioner training program. • The test for high cholesterol that is still in use today. • The first Thyroid Deficiency Test for newborns. • Tens of millions of children born prematurely are alive today due to the development of Synthetic Lung Surfactants that allow newborns with underdeveloped lungs to breathe.

• The manufacture of low-cost eye drops to treat eye infections in newborns, especially effective in developing countries, saving the eyesight of hundreds of thousands. • The creation of Enzyme Replacement Therapy to treat Hurler-Scheie Syndrome. • The invention and production of infant heart monitors to prevent SIDS, and test for congenital heart disorders in newborns. • The first treatment for sickle cell disease ever approved for children.

And so much more…from groundbreaking work in developing the first male contraceptive to advances in noninvasive breast cancer detection, our trailblazing research continues.

She Shows You All She Can RIO FROHOFF KEEPS HER TYPE 1 DIABETES UNDER CONTROL—ON AND OFF THE COURT. WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHED BY KAT MONK

R

edondo Beach’s Rio Frohoff was named after the popular ’80s hit song “Rio” by Duran Duran. At age 22, she is still dancing on the sand as a Division 1 beach volleyball graduate transfer student to Pepperdine University after playing four years at Tulane University in New Orleans. She received an extra year of eligibility due to an unfinished season caused by the pandemic. Yet when Rio prepares to play in a tournament, she must pack more than a volleyball and her beach towel. Diagnosed as a diabetic at the age of 9, her bag must include insulin in case her glucose levels spike. She also wears a Dexcom—a monitor attached to her skin that tracks her blood sugar throughout the day. Ignoring these readings could be a life-or-death situation for the young athlete. Rio shines as an admirable example of how to successfully manage diabetes while also achieving athletic dreams. Athleticism and competitiveness run deep in her blood. Coming up through the ranks, her fiery spirit was often compared to her uncle, former professional beach volleyball player Brent Frohoff. Brent was a mainstay on the Association of Beach Volleyball professional tour, while Rio’s dad, Chris Frohoff, was traveling the world as a professional surfer. As a defender on a two-person team,

38

SOUTHBAY HEALTH I 2022

when Rio is playing she dives in any direction she needs to in order to keep the ball from dropping on the sand. She treats every play like a championship point, and her movement can resemble an athletic dance on the sand. Rio does not live with regrets, but she says there have been “times when I get a little too emotionally involved in a game and go overboard cheering. I’ve had to apologize many times to opponents because I let the heat of the moment get the best of me, but most of the time we all have a laugh about it later.” Born with the autoimmune disease, Rio notes that diabetes expressed itself over time. Before her diagnosis, she was emotional, extremely skinny and struggled with increased thirst and constant urination. Quick to notice the symptoms, her father, a Los Angeles County emergency medical technician, and her mom, Ann Marie, were able to prevent Rio from destabilizing and spending an extended stay in the hospital. Type 1 diabetes, once referred to as juvenile diabetes, is a chronic condition characterized by high blood sugar, or glucose. “If I could take it from her and live with it instead, I would in a heartbeat,” shares Ann Marie. This chronic disease can lead to many serious complications if not properly man-

aged. Rio has learned to optimize her glucose control, which involves both insulin and caloric intake. “I give myself a shot of insulin every time I eat and give myself another shot of a different long-lasting insulin every night,” she explains. “It’s a balancing act between the carbs I’m eating and the amount of insulin I am taking.” Over time, uncontrolled blood sugar levels can lead to a host of complications affecting major organs and triggering serious problems such as heart attack, stroke, blindness and kidney failure. The Dexcom meter proved to be a game changer for Rio. With Bluetooth, the monitor sends data to her phone, indicating her blood levels. Diabetic athletes present themselves with a unique challenge in overcoming performance obstacles at different stages and the projected impact on their glucose levels. Rio has found that juice and appropriate snacks help her in these situations, and she doesn’t leave home without them. Managing diabetes depends on the sport the athlete is playing, as numerous factors can contribute significantly to glucose levels including stress and the level of hydration. Levels can drop quickly with exercise because athletes burn carbohydrates rapidly and their blood sugar lowers with the activity.

“I have to go into matches with a higher sugar level because I can’t be checking my blood throughout the match. It can spike high or drop low while I am playing.” “With all honesty, it is a constant battle— especially with athletics,” Rio adds. “I have to go into matches with a higher sugar level because I can’t be checking my blood throughout the match. It can spike high or drop low while I am playing.” Rio attributes much of her success to diet, exercise, constant blood sugar checks and being proactive. Right now her diet is not limited, but she steers clear of extremely sweet things like cotton candy and dried fruits because they spike her blood sugar levels. With the strong support of her tight family and group of friends, she knows that if she has diabetic-related issues come up, she will be taken care of. This gives her peace of mind. Rio is authentic on her life path. She hopes to one day enroll in the Doctor of Psychology program at Pepperdine and eventually open a private practice to help youth and young adults learn early coping skills that will last a lifetime. “I am fine letting my ugly moments show and bouncing back from them,” she shares. ■

BEAT ____________ AFTER A SURPRISING DIAGNOSIS AND TWO EMERGENCY SURGERIES, JD WARD AFFIRMS HEART DISEASE CAN STRIKE AT ANY AGE. WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHED BY KAT MONK

T

ears well up in JD Ward’s eyes as he reflects on just how happy he is to be alive. JD was happy, healthy and exercised regularly until he started to feel fatigued and have chest pains. At 44, he was diagnosed with coronary heart disease. Having his chest cracked open truly opened his eyes to all he is grateful for—including walks with the family, sunshine on his face, jumping into the ocean for a quick swim or just bathing his 195-pound dog without experiencing chest pains. A music aficionado, JD can recite the names of records by all of his favorite musicians. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden lead the list, with his favorite singers being Eddie Vedder and the late Chris Cornell. Growing up in Spokane, Washington, JD was a consummate athlete playing baseball at Eastern Washington University. He moved to Hermosa Beach in 1997. Not long after, he met his now-wife, Kristin Styskal, and California became his home for good. The last thing on JD’s mind was that he would be experiencing life-and-death heart issues in his mid-40s. Coronary heart disease is not prevalent in JD’s family. He was exercising, he didn’t eat fast food, he drank lots of water and he rarely eats red meat. The one thing JD knows is that he wants to live—he wants to be healthy into his 80s and 90s and desperately wants to be with his family as time goes on. A literal “ticking time bomb,” JD’s left anterior descending artery—which can cause a massive “widow-maker” heart attack—was 95% blocked. Blockage causes a blood clot to form and stops the blood flow to the left side of the heart, causing the vital organ to stop beating normally. JD was in the operating room the next day for an angioplasty—a procedure that uses a balloon to stretch open a narrowed or blocked artery so stents (tiny, expandable metal mesh coils) can be implanted in the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart. This procedure helps prevent the artery from closing in the long term. A coronary stent is now used in nearly all angioplasty procedures. All was well until it wasn’t. By October 2021, JD was once again feeling chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath. Convinced it was something other than the stents, he

finally made an appointment to see Rishi Kaushal, MD. After hearing about JD’s symptoms, Dr. Kaushal ordered an angiogram—a scan that shows blood flow in the arteries through a magnetic resonance angiography. The blood vessels appear on the image after a contrast dye is injected into the blood, which lights up on the scan wherever it flows. Dr. Kaushal and Matthew Powers, MD, both gave JD the crushing news that the stents had failed. The next step was open-heart surgery and a double bypass. With cutting-edge technology, Dr. Powers repurposed two of JD’s mammary arteries to bypass the ones blocked by the scarred stents. The doctor referred to JD as a “unicorn,” lucky to be alive but with no idea why his body acted that way. The most frustrating part of this for JD is that he has “no control over what is happening to my body. Lottery tickets aren’t for me anymore, because my luck has all been used up—twice now—in just three years.” For the next six weeks, JD slept elevated in a recliner. His daughter Amelia sat by his side for days as they watched the entire Harry Potter series. “It was the greatest thing ever, to see my family and friends rally around and support our family after my surgery,” he says. “Meals were delivered to the house for two weeks.” The outpouring of support from the nurses, doctors, family and friends is not something he will ever take lightly. After open-heart surgery, patients have been able to reduce their discomfort with the use of a heart-shaped pillow. Filled with firm stuffing, the pillow provides comfort, eases pain and protects the incision site. A sentimental guy, JD had the staff at the hospital—including his doctors—autograph the pillow. Now the pillow sits above his office desk as a reminder of how important a red heart will always be. Shares JD, “The moment I will never forget is when I felt that tube in my throat and knew I was alive.” ■

Are Enough WHEN JULIA CONKLING STARTED HER CLUB AT PALOS VERDES HIGH, SHE DIDN’T KNOW THAT HER IDEA WAS PART OF A REVOLUTION. WRITTEN BY GLORIA WILLIAMSON, RD |

t age 14, the first image I saw that I thought defined beauty was Tawny Kitaen doing a graceful cartwheel over the hoods of two Jaguars. Her lean legs, long wild red hair, narrow hips, colorful makeup and full bust are permanently imprinted on my mind. Now looking back at her role in the Whitesnake video “Here I Go Again,” I see much more in her animated performance. But at the time I thought, “In order to be beautiful, to be considered attractive, I need to look like her.” In 1988 I could spray my permed hair, put on another coat of teal eyeliner, pull up my acid-wash jeans and head to school. If my hair deflated or my eyeliner smeared, it was never going to be photographed and posted. It was never going to be compared to another image of how I looked in a selfie. Other than stopping into the girl’s bathroom at some point, I never saw how my Tawnyinspired look held up or thought much about how well I pulled it off. Julia Conkling and more than 42 million teens like her in the United States no longer

have the luxury of walking out the door and leaving most of their self-consciousness in the bathroom mirror. The smallest choice they make about a shade of eyeliner or a style of tennis shoe could end up being the center of slander either online or in person. Julia got caught in the culture of judgment and public shaming early on, but by the time she hit her freshman year of high school, she had learned a lot about the movement sometimes referred to as “body positivity.” She explains its central values: “Not bashing how others look. Not making comments. Not judging people based on what foods they are eating.” At her high school, like many others across the country, Julia constantly hears comments about how others look, what they wear and what they eat. Any moment can be criticized, and any person can be compared to an image on the internet—even an image of themselves. Many parents and adults who have the responsibility to keep kids and teens safe in this unprecedented time of hyperconcentrated beauty culture are ill-prepared

for how their words and actions can affect today’s youth. Julia has noticed, especially in the Southern California culture of health, that parents and teachers often fixate on good foods versus bad foods, body types and eating styles. She defines health differently. “Eat a variety of foods that can include fast food, fruits and vegetables—it’s all food,” Julia says. “Have what feels good and listen to your body. Being on a diet is not healthy unless you have a doctor tell you that you need a special diet because of a health issue.” The body positivity movement—also known as body acceptance, size diversity justice or size inclusivity—has surfaced in response to the narrow and unrealistic or imbalanced versions of bodies and diets portrayed on the internet and in social media. It is also fueled by racial justice and disability justice movements that call attention to the limited ways we see bodies portrayed and accommodated in so many aspects of our society. Algorithms programmed into many social

media platforms tailor our feeds to offer dietary suggestions, workout routines and celebrities who portray unrealistic images and lifestyles. This directly affects teens, who are especially impressionable. While Julia and many other teens are very aware that most of these images are manipulated using filters and photo editing apps, it still sets up ideas sometimes known as “beauty ideals” or “aesthetic ideals.” As a registered dietitian, I work in private counseling with clients of all genders who have difficult relationships with food and body—including eating disorders. I am alarmingly familiar with the dangerous effect the culture of health and beauty has on both teens and adults. When I heard about Julia’s club, named You Are Enough, I was astounded. The club includes a group of more than 200 students, formed on club rush day at Palos Verdes High. Drawn in by some great marketing on Julia’s part, which included an eye-catching table and a bowl of candy, they were enticed to stay due to the welcoming space that allowed students to share their worries,

experiences and insecurities with each other. Julia has been pleasantly surprised by how the club has taken shape. Club members make suggestions for discussion topics and have taken action such as the letters they wrote to clothing store Brandy Melville protesting their “one-size-fits-all” claims that exclude many Americans. In addition to other benefits, the students attending You Are Enough meetings eat lunch at a time when lunch consumption has greatly diminished in high schools all over Southern California. Julia identifies it as a huge win that they can begin to normalize eating lunch on her campus. She sees herself continuing into a career where she helps people either with their mental or physical health. In the meantime, she tries to spread the body positivity message to her peers. “Don’t spend so much time in the mirror,” Julia advises. “Wear what you feel comfortable in, not what pleases other people. Eat what you want. Take time for yourself. If you need a social media break, that is OK.” ■

A Happy ACCIDENT WENDELL COVALT DIDN’T CHANGE HIS DIET TO IMPROVE HIS HEALTH. BUT WHEN HE BECAME A VEGAN, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. WRITTEN BY AMBER KLINCK | PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANE O’DONNELL

SOUTHBAY HEALTH I 2022

W

endell Covalt began eating a plant-based diet roughly 45 years ago. His decision wasn’t based on a dietary trend or made as a form of protest against meat lovers. It was a decision made out of convenience. His wife at the time was a vegan, and rather than cook two separate dishes for every meal, Wendell embraced a vegan lifestyle. What he hadn’t anticipated was how much the switch would improve his overall well-being. “I noticed over time I started having more energy. I felt better,” he notes. But today, at 80 years old, Wendell’s enduring health is the true testament to his plantbased lifestyle. “When I was 60, I hoped that I could still do the same things at 65 and 70,” Wendell says. “I had this idea that as people got older, there were so many things they could no longer do.” But year 65, 70, 75 came and went with Wendell staying as active as ever. “I only see a doctor once a year. And all my markers— like my cholesterol, my A1C and my blood pressure—are really low.” With so many people ailing due to poor dietary habits, Wendell felt inspired to share his story with others. “You look around and see how many people are dying of heart attacks or cancer or diabetes. Many of the health problems people are dealing with could be helped [by changing their diet and activity level]. I think people should know that just because you’re 70 or 80, you don’t have to stay home and watch TV.” So Wendell started volunteering to host lectures at work. “I was part owner of a computer software company,” he notes. Next he started presenting at Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Dominguez Hills and eventually on Princess Cruises, which he’s been doing for around 10 years. Wendell’s audience is mostly seniors. “People come because they’ve seen a friend or they have been warned their cholesterol’s too high or they know someone who had a triple bypass. In most cases, it’s not just curiosity. Something has triggered [their interest].” But it can be a challenge presenting people with an alternative they’re not accustomed to. “It’s sometimes offensive to people that you don’t eat the same way they do. They take it as ‘I think I’m different’ or ‘I think I’m better,’ and they gradually wander off.” But as a 45-year vegan, Wendell is pretty used to this. Living in the hyper-health-

conscious bubble of Los Angeles, it’s easy to forget that gluten-free, vegan, dairy-alternative options aren’t readily available on every street corner of the country. And certainly not 45 years ago. A native of Indiana, Wendell also spent time working in Atlanta. Finding a variety of vegan options was tricky, to put it mildly. But Wendell got creative, cooked at home and often carried his lunch with him. He made it work. He attributes his health to the things he puts in his body but also to his commitment to staying active. “I go to the gym every other day,” he says, noting that he can still do 50 consecutive pushups. And he can do a 4-minute plank … just saying. When it comes down to what has played more of a role in his overall health—his com-

mitment to fitness or his diet—Wendell gives far more credit to what he eats. “You could be very physically active, but if you’re eating something that’s a carcinogen, physical activity won’t get rid of it.” When asked about his indulgences, Wendell pauses to think. It’s a tough question for a person who doesn’t feel he’s restricting himself. He doesn’t count calories or deprive himself of anything he wants to eat. Being a vegan isn’t so much a diet as it is a lifestyle. Wendell and his wife, Ginger, spend their time hiking, traveling and caring for their 150-square-foot organic garden. His enthusiasm for encouraging others to take control of their health and explore how their diet is contributing to their overall well-being isn’t waning. For Wendell, living longer is far more appealing than getting old. ■

“When I was 60, I hoped that I could still do the same things at 65 and 70. I had this idea that as people got older, there were so many things they could no longer do.”

I chose to build my practice and serve the South Bay because this is simply home. Growing up helping my dad in his dental practice in Torrance, I always dreamed of following in his footsteps. After meeting my wife, Camille, in dental school, we quickly realized that we wanted to settle down in the South Bay. Once we welcomed our son, Broderick, we knew the South Bay would be our forever home. Building a practice surrounded by family and friends has been a dream come true.

stems from my advanced training in special care dentistry. We provide advanced comprehensive dentistry for patients who may have severe medical, physical or mental problems, including organ transplant and cancer patients, immunocompromised individuals and adults who require special care. For patients unable to receive treatment in a routine dental setting, we can provide dental services under IV sedation with the aid of some of the best dental anesthesiologists around. Sports dentistry holds a special place in my heart because it gives me the unique opportunity to give back to our country by supporting Team USA, Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Volunteering and working with the Los Angeles Football Club—a Major League Soccer team—for more than five seasons has been an amazing experience as well. I have been fortunate and honored to work with some of the top physicians and trainers in the league to keep our favorite athletes on the field!

CAREER CHOICE

In my 20s, I bounced from one specialist to the next with no resolution of my poor health. I really wanted to get pregnant and had been trying for years, but I was told it was highly unlikely. I felt hopeless. I knew there had to be a better way. After years of struggling, I saw an acupuncturist who rebalanced my entire body and prescribed Chinese herbs that made me feel like Wonder Woman. I also saw a functional medicine doctor who corrected my nutritional deficiencies and taught me how to live optimally. I regained my youth and vitality, got pregnant easily and had two beautiful babies: my son, Ezekiel, now age 12, and my daughter, Azyrah, 14. My life drastically changed for the better, and I felt inspired to help others. Since I was helped by both Chinese medicine and functional medicine, I decided to study both modalities in order to offer integrative care in my own practice. My space doesn’t feel like a typical doctor’s office. I’ve created a little slice of serenity for my patients so they feel at ease during treatments. My own experience and understanding makes me a compassionate guide for others and their healing journey.

FINDING BALANCE

A FITNESS FAMILY

In nature, the triangle is the strongest geometrical figure when it is balanced on all sides. At Elite Triangle Fitness, we create an open space for clients to develop each side of their own triangle with genuine support. Our trainers focus on the specific, unique needs of each client to ensure detailed results related to physical, mental and spiritual health.

We are known for functional fitness practices and building a fitness family. Our community of members encourage, support and motivate one another. With a background in sports psychology, it is crucial for us to develop a positive relationship between client and practice.

A COMMUNITY GYM

“Knowing you have someone rooting for you makes getting the work done that much easier.”

I was born and raised in the South Bay, and I started Elite Triangle Fitness in July 2012 shortly after my brothers passing. I left corporate fitness and wanted to give back to the community that had given me so much, so I opened Elite Triangle Fitness. Our gym is a great place to work because we help other trainers focus on both their clients and personal goals without being stifled by life.

SOUTH BAY NATIVE I come from a big Italian family that has deeprooted connections to the South Bay. Many of them still live here in the South Bay today. My three brothers, little sister and I grew up chasing each other outdoors or on the soccer field any chance we got. Sports were very important to us throughout our childhood.

TOP TIP

SUPER SUPPORTERS The #1 way we empower our clients to improve their own health is by programming challenging workouts to test their ability and being their biggest cheerleader throughout. As trainers, we encourage them in the gym and in other life endeavors. Health is a spectrum and requires constant adjustment and focus. It can be taxing at times. Knowing you have someone rooting for you makes getting the work done that much easier.

When achieving a goal, focus on the mechanics not the aesthetics—in both exercise and life in general. First mechanics, then the aesthetics follow. We remind our clients about this a lot. Exercise is not a punishment because of something you cannot do, but a celebration of what you can do.

Patients should know that at my practice, we are dedicated to our love for dentistry. We address their needs in a comfortable environment, giving them a realistic and comprehensive treatment plan based on decisions we make together. Most importantly, we stay abreast of new developments and participate in continuing education in order to provide patient care at the highest standards.

Behind every dentist is a dedicated team of assistants, patient coordinators, surgeons and specialists helping provide the service and care our patients need. All of our members would be glad to answer any questions you have about the services we provide.

TEETH TECHNIQUE

“At my practice, we are dedicated to our love for dentistry.”

Teeth can be affected by discoloration, spaces, gaps, chips and misalignment. A conservative way to repair any of these problems is bond and/or enamel shaping. This technique has been used for many years and can enhance aesthetics of teeth. Advances in cosmetic dental bonding procedures have led to improved strength and durability. No anesthesia is required when shaping the enamel, and results can be seen immediately. Enamel shaping is usually an option when there is only a minimal amount of discrepancy that needs to be corrected. Be aware that enamel shaping and bonding can’t solve all problems.

BEFORE & AFTER This patient had an old crown and bondings on adjacent teeth that were chipped and discolored. She loved the shape of her own teeth but wanted them symmetrical, aligned and white. This was achieved with custom-shade porcelain veneers.

TOP TIP The standard recommendation for oral health care is no less important now than it was before this crisis. Please be sure to brush your teeth a minimum of twice each day and floss between the teeth at least once each day. It’s best to clean toothbrushes on a regular basis. I suggest using an electric toothbrush, and my favorite is Philips Sonicare. Not only is it effective in cleaning teeth, but it comes with a UV sanitizer that helps kill up to 99% of the bacteria on your toothbrush.

PATIENT FEEDBACK The best feedback I have received was from an 8-year-old patient when she told me that the procedure was so gentle and she did not feel a thing. She said she had found her new dentist and she couldn’t wait to come back because she loved being in my office. It was so rewarding to have such a young patient enthusiastic about the health of her teeth and visiting a dentist—especially after hearing later about her unpleasant dental experiences in the past.

A NATURAL APPROACH

• • • • •

OsteoStrong is a unique wellness program designed to address issues with bone health, joint pain and strength with a simple, oncea-week protocol. We are not a gym, diet or drug. We use a natural approach to improve bone health, provide relief from joint and muscle pain, and improve balance, agility, and strength. When you consider that, according to the CDC, half of all women over age 50 will break a bone, you can understand how powerful OsteoStrong is in working to reduce the risks associated with osteoporosis, osteopenia and aging. To be able to make a difference in the lives of the people in our community is why we are here. We are so happy to serve the South Bay in our own special way.

for seniors, and you see why OsteoStrong is such a very special business. Our natural way to improve bone health leads to a stronger skeleton that allows us to have better balance and agility. You go to a gym to make your muscles stronger. You go to OsteoStrong to make your bones stronger! Pharmaceuticals used to improve bone health can have toxic effects. OsteoStrong provides a safer, more natural solution. We believe that we can help everyone lead healthier, more vital lives. We offer complimentary consultations to prospective members to see how we can help.

BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY When your values align, powerful change happens. At OsteoStrong, we are driven by a shared commitment to values—the kind that spark transformation and make us all become better versions of ourselves. We are passionate about helping people change their lives. We strive for excellence in our business and product.

OsteoStrong’s unique value proposition is unlike any you may hear about in the service business world: Just 10 minutes once a week can improve skeletal strength and bone density. Why is that even important? Because there are 55 million people in the U.S. with low bone density. Menopause, diet and medications all affect healthy aging. OsteoStrong can help! Osteoporosis, a condition in which the calcium is sapped from our bones and makes them weak and porous, creates situations where there is a higher risk of a fall and a fracture. Add this to the dire statistic that breaking a bone after age 65 is the third leading cause of death

“Patients have a truly unique experience in our office.”

THE EMPOWERED PATIENT The primary way we empower patients to improve their health is through education. We know that the best way for us to serve our patients is by continuously learning and, in turn, sharing what we know in a way that makes our patients better informed about their own oral health. We strongly believe that a well-educated patient is better prepared and more capable of actively participating in establishing and maintaining their oral health and long-term care.

A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE Patients have a truly unique experience in our office. The first thing they tell us is how beautiful and clean our space is, but they typically leave talking more about how good they feel to be here. They appreciate our efficiency, professionalism, explanations and concern for their care. They also recognize and comment on our cuttingedge technology.

NEPHROLOGY SERVICES

KIDNEY FUNCTION

• • • • • • • •

The UCLA Health Division of Nephrology leads the nation in groundbreaking research and innovative treatments for all types of kidney conditions. As recognized leaders in nephrology services, our experts help children and adults with a variety of kidney conditions. UCLA Health nephrology is #1 on the West Coast and #3 in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report. We’re proud to lead the nation in advanced diagnostics, world-class care, effective treatments for kidney disease and preserving kidney function. Patients benefit from our vast experience and receive outstanding, comprehensive care from top experts dedicated to their well-being.

Harpreet Sidhu, MD: Nephrology is a branch of medicine that pertains to the kidneys. Kidneys are part of the urinary system and remove waste products and toxins from the blood and produce urine in the process. The kidneys also maintain a balance of water, salts and minerals, regulate blood pressure, are critical in red blood cell production, and allow nerves, muscles and other tissues to work normally.

Chronic kidney disease Alport syndrome Electrolyte imbalances Fabry’s disease Glomerulonephritis Kidney stones Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) And more

“Patients benefit from our vast experience and receive outstanding, comprehensive care.”

WHAT IS NEPHROLOGY? Huma Hasnain Kennedy, MD: Nephrologists are internal medicine doctors who have pursued additional training to specialize in conditions that relate to the kidneys. Nephrologists help their patients maintain healthy blood pressure and make healthy lifestyle changes to prevent kidney disease progression. Nephrologists are also a great source of knowledge for identifying issues relating to your kidney health and other diseases such as resistant hypertension, electrolyte abnormalities and prevention of kidney stones.

NUTRITION & KIDNEY HEALTH Michelle Hwang, MD: Good hydration and nutrition are important to overall kidney health. Hydration may slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, and dehydration can cause acute kidney injury that may progress to chronic disease if the dehydration status sustains. Good nutrition with the proper balance of nutrients will help keep your kidney function stable and provide you with the energy to do your daily tasks. For example, protein is one of the essential nutrients that give you energy and helps build muscle. However, too much protein can make your kidneys work harder and potentially cause more damage. The correct amount of protein to consume daily is based on an individual’s activity level and body size. Nutrition plays an important role in helping patients support kidney health.

84

SOUTHBAY HEALTH I 2022

WHAT IS CKD? Huma Hasnain Kennedy, MD: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common condition that occurs when the kidneys are damaged and cannot properly filter blood. Risk factors for CKD include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, family history of CKD and being older than age 60. Patients do not typically have symptoms until CKD has progressed to a late stage, which is why proactive screening with standard blood and urine tests is so important.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE Harpreet Sidhu, MD: Regular exercise may help prevent chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity, all of which are risk factors for developing kidney disease.

HEALTH TIP Michelle Hwang, MD: One health tip I discuss with my patients is to choose food with less salt. Always check for sodium information on the nutrition label for packaged foods. When possible, I recommend that my patients choose fresh vegetables or fruits instead of canned vegetables or canned or dried fruits, as sodium is used to preserve foods. When eating out, remember that most dressings and sauces contain sodium, so asking your server to put dressing or sauce on the side is another way to reduce your sodium intake.

Bioidentical hormone replacement Doctor-supervised weight loss plans Gut health Beauty Vitamin infusions Facial rejuvenation Anti-aging Colon cancer screening

WHAT HAPPENED? You’re eating the same, exercising the same ... so what happened? Why are you gaining weight and so tired? This is the #1 question I get whether patients are coming in for a screening colonoscopy or Botox on my med spa side. Patients literally come in with tears because they feel they have tried everything without results. The same exact thing happened to me four years ago.

THE SOLUTION I asked myself: “How do I want to live the next stage of my life?” I did a deep dive into hormones and nutrition. I knew that as we age, our hormones decline; that had to be a contributing factor. I learned all about intermittent fasting, cortisol levels, sleep patterns, low carb/keto diets, medications, bioidential hormones, supplements and lifestyle changes that could change metabolism on a cellular level. The link between gut health, obesity, chronic illness and mental health all were evident, and my practice and attitude shifted to more of a comprehensive one.

SELF-CARE

“How do you want to experience the next stage of your life?”

88

SOUTHBAY HEALTH I 2022

When people feel good, they look good. When they look good, they feel good. So ask yourself: How do you want to experience the next stage of your life? It is yours to live! Self-care is selflove—stop feeling guilty. Whether it’s weight loss, bioidentical hormone replacement, IBS treatment or other anti-aging treatments, you deserve to feel better. Someone once said, “An empty lantern provides no light. Self-care is the fuel that allows your light to shine brightly.”
