It’s helped my posture, strength, flexibility and muscle toning … all areas I needed some additional work on. And I love my instructor. I used to dread going to the gym … the sweat, the exhaustion, the soreness. Now I can hardly wait to get to my class. I welcome the pain and struggle because I love the results. It’s a challenge I’m happy to make part of my weekly routine. And to think: I probably never would have done it if that free class hadn’t come my way. So try something new in 2018. OVERCOMING HIS FEAR OF THE OPEN WATER WAS A CHALLENGE FOR BRYAN MINEO. NOW A SWIM COACH, HE HELPS OTHERS OVERCOME THEIR OWN CHALLENGES. WRITTEN BY AMBER KLINCK | PHOTOGRAPHED BY JEFF BERTING

ryan Mineo grew up swimming. “I was on the swim team from the time I was around 4 or 5 years old,” he notes. But at the age of 18, while swimming in a small lake in Texas, he discovered he had an intense fear of open water. “It was terrifying; I never knew I had this fear,” Bryan says. Now he’s an open-water swim coach—plunging into the Pacific Ocean 365 days a year for two to three hours a day. How did he turn his anxiety into expertise? He faced his fear head-on. It all started with Bryan trying to impress a girl. “She was training for a triathlon,” he says. The plan was for the two of them to head out to the lake and for Bryan help her train for the competition. “I swim out, maybe a couple hundred yards, and I start panicking,” Bryan remembers. “I swallow a couple of gulps from the wind and the chop. I’m treading water and hyperventilating. At this point I knew I couldn’t do this.” The jig was up; quickly it became clear that Bryan was the one who needed help. “She swam over to me and mouthed the words, ‘Just breathe.’” Those two words would stick with the young swimmer and later become a big part of Bryan’s coaching approach. This challenge to overcome his fear was new—and a little inviting for Bryan. “I’ve had an amazing life and a really fortunate childhood,” he explains. “I really had no hardships, no family deaths at that point, so I really didn’t know what struggle was. This was the first time I was like, ‘Whoa, this is a challenge for me. Maybe I should approach this; maybe this is a good opportunity.’” So rather than backing down from his fear, Bryan began driving 30 minutes to the lake, four to five times a week. Day one began with him standing, chest deep in the lake. By day two he was treading water. “I didn’t realize it [at the time], but I was creating a progression and a methodology. I’ve refined it, of course, but how I teach now is how I learned to overcome my own fear,” Bryan says. Today, whether he’s coaching one-on-one, leading one of his weekly, year-round Swim Mechanic Ocean Groups (SMOG) of some hundred-plus swimmers in Redondo Beach, instructing a smaller SMOG squad in the pool or coaching remotely online, Bryan is constantly evolving the Swim Mechanic brand. “I knew I wanted to create a community within my field. [Open water swimming] is a really niche thing as it is,” he says. “It started with just me and a few clients. Then it kind of blew up … it’s still so humbling.” With a wide range of clientele—from athletes training to obtain peak performance and master technique to ocean newbies looking to shake themselves of the fear of what’s below—Bryan’s focus is individualized with each swimmer. “Everyone moves really uniquely in the water. For me, it’s about trying to pick up on that and connect the cause and effect—which is not intuitive and not a given with swimming.” But there’s more to it than the physicality. “There’s a deep bond with swimmers,” Bryan explains. “It likely has to do with the lifestyle and the kind of commitment it takes.” Never one to be competitive against others, Bryan is no stranger to challenging himself … be it testing the limits of his temperature tolerance with ice baths, cold showers and year-round ocean swims sans wetsuit, or pushing the distance of each swim from five miles to 10 and beyond. “My addictions are more about the mental thresholds,” he explains. “That’s been the most rewarding thing—to find these thresholds and raise the bar. The biggest takeaway is that it bleeds over into other facets of my life.” This is true for his clients as well. Like a form of swim therapy, Bryan gives people the techniques to overcome their fear … and that doesn’t go away once they’re back on dry land. n

Bryan’s Year in Health Weekday Itinerary: “My life is awesome by the way. You’re going to hate me after I tell you this. I sleep in till 7:00 or 7:15, get a water, juice or coffee and head to the beach. That’s my favorite part of the day. I work with two or three hours of clients. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., basically, every day I have open. I go to a lot of coffee shops, I read, I write and then I’ll typically do something active. We [he and his massive Great Dane, Joey] go for a hike every day in PV. And then I may have one or two nighttime clients.”
Daily nutrition: “I’ve been vegan for about four years, and I’m gluten-free. I eat clean, but my vice is baked goods.”
Workout routine: “I’m always moving. I used to be much more regimented, and I didn’t even realize how unhappy it was making me. So now I’m much more about approaching it in a fun way, seeing how can I move my body differently. So I climb, I do Pilates once a week, I do yoga and I hike every day.”
Guilty pleasures: “Bourbon and cookies. (Best answer ever.)”
A fitness craze you want to try: “I feel like I need to try CrossFit. Another thing I really want to do: It’s not really a fitness thing, but I want to go skydiving.”
A sport or fitness routine you are NOT good at: “Ha, there are many.”
Preferred training shoe or athletic footwear: “I’m never wearing shoes. If I am, they’re sandals.”
Next health goal: “I’d like to do a long-distance trail running race.”

alvin Vachon was ice skating by the time he was 3 years old, but that’s not surprising since his father and grandfather have long National Hockey League (NHL) associations. Calvin’s dad, Nick Vachon, is a coach and the general manager of the Los Angeles Junior Kings— a considerable step taken in 2016 by the NHL L.A. Kings to oversee the development of the sport in Southern California. “The decision by Kings president of business operations and alternate governor Luc Robitaille and L.A. Kings GM Rob Blake to create a formal association with the Los Angeles Kings is a tremendous opportunity for our youth as hockey grows in Southern California,” says Nick. The Los Angeles Junior Kings now have 28 teams with more than 420 players in the program. Nick grew up in the world of professional hockey as the son of legendary goalie Rogie Vachon, who played for the Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins and L.A. Kings. Nick was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs and played for the New York Islanders before transitioning as a coach for the Junior Kings. Now Calvin, age 12, is following in the family footsteps as a goalie for the Junior Kings Pee Wee AAA Major team. When Calvin started playing hockey at age 5, Nick put him in various positions including a forward and a defensive player. “However, by the time he was 8 he had a natural ability and was extremely quick in accomplishing things at the net that kids that age aren’t developed to accomplish, such as splits in saves,” says Nick. Calvin replies, “I always thought that defending the goal was more fun.” When Calvin’s not in school, he’s on the ice. He

teams that play over a 10-day tournament. “It’s like an immersion program for the kids because they stay with Québéquois families in what becomes a cultural exchange program,” says Nick. Even though they’re playing hockey every day, the players have time to see the city and experience a different lifestyle. “When I go, I try to learn a few new words and try a few new foods,” says Calvin. He might only be in middle school, but Calvin speaks like a seasoned player when he discusses the psychology of playing in elite tournaments. “Hockey is fun, so when I’m on the ice, I’m focused and I think about all the good things that are going to happen.” “Calvin maintains his composure on the ice like a much older player,” Nick says, “because he’s able to give both verbal and physical direction to his defense.” So how does Calvin stay grounded with such a family legacy and so much time committed to hockey? “My mom says if I don’t do well in school, then I can’t play hockey,” says Calvin. Nick and his wife, Renee, spend a lot of time around the sport, but they balance that with daughter Chloe’s dance and gymnastics involvement as well as family time in the South Bay. “In the spring I play baseball, and in the summer I like to hang out with my friends at the beach,” says Calvin. As hockey in Southern California heats up, the paths to the NHL become varied through both junior hockey and college programs. The NHL has had six draft picks from Southern California in the past few years, including three former Junior Kings. “We are fortunate to have a nationally recognized program that develops student athletes at all levels, and we’re committed to instilling teamwork, commitment and a passion for the game, because those are life skills that translate off the ice and are more important than winning and losing,” says Nick. Southern California junior hockey has become so strong, it hosts showcase exhibition weekends. However, under the guidance of Nick as the GM with the Kings involved in the decision-making and development, junior hockey in Los Angeles is being cultivated under an umbrella that is committed to developing young athletes both mentally and physically. “There’s always a lot going on, but it’s all good and fun,” says Calvin. Watch the NHL roster in a few years; the name Vachon will likely be on the back of a jersey.” n

While Janet would like to turn professional, the current scene in the States doesn’t provide professional fighters the opportunity to fight as often as amateurs. Her priority is simply becoming the best Muay Thai fighter she can be. “I’m focused on self-improvement,” she says. “I want to be an example for younger girls that want to get into fighting”. Janet aims to continue fighting as much as possible before retiring into the next chapter of her life: having a family of her own. n

Guilty pleasure: “Watching The Mindy Project on Hulu. And Sour Patch Kids. I love Sour Patch Kids.”
Fitness activity she’d like to try: “I want to skateboard—if only I was cool enough.”

She adds: “Dancers can be judged by their bodies and how they move. In our community, we really try to be inclusive. It’s not about how
you look. It’s just about moving your body and being confident in yourself.” Charlene has received positive feedback from subscribers, many of whom are women in their 30s and older. Hip Shake Fitness has about 700 online subscribers—including some in other countries—as well as more than 2 million views of their YouTube videos. “I’m so grateful that women are being healthier and that they love our product,” she says. Born in the Philippines, Charlene grew up in a close-knit extended family where relatives lived in six houses on the same street. Always fascinated with American culture, she moved in with an aunt living in Glendale in 2002 and soon landed a job in Orange County. “In the Philippines, you stay with your parents until you get married,” says Charlene. “It was a big transition to live alone.” She struggled for the first two years but eventually settled in—making friends and working in online sales, search optimization and managerial positions. After getting engaged, Charlene moved from Culver City to her fiancé’s Manhattan Beach home. Running a business keeps Charlene busy, but she makes time for civic engagement. She serves as president of the South Bay Bike Coalition, which works to make biking, walking and driving safer in the South Bay. After receiving the PCOS diagnosis, Charlene focused on her health. She works out regularly and still treks to Culver City for class in Capoeira—a combination of martial arts and dance. She maintains a keto (highprotein, low-carb) diet. PCOS increases sugar levels, and her lifestyle changes have helped bring her levels down. Charlene wants to increase awareness of PCOS, which she had not heard of before being diagnosed. “It’s more common than I realized, but most women only learn they have it when they’re wanting to start a family. Women who are struggling should know they’re not alone.” n

Charlene’s Year in HEALTH Fitness Routine: Charlene does Hip Shake Fitness cardio routines three to four times a week and toning routines two or three times a week. Once a month she works out with a trainer, focusing on strength and positioning. She and her husband often take evening walks along The Strand.
Daily Nutrition: Bacon and eggs or yogurt with fruit and nuts for breakfast. A salad with protein (usually chicken or meat) for lunch. For dinner she and her husband cook a meal from Green Chef, which has a keto plan. She avoids added sugars.
Daily Practice: Charlene keeps a gratitude journal. Upon waking up, she’ll write three things she is grateful for from the previous day.
A Dream: To have Michelle Obama dance in a Hip Shake Fitness video. “She brought a focus on health to our country. I love what she does, and I love that she was a First Lady who could do push-ups.”

Peter Borden, MD, began his career in 2001 when he joined his father, Donald Borden, MD, who had been practicing orthopaedic surgery in the South Bay for 30 years. After an extremely successful career treating South Bay residents and serving as chief of orthopaedics for several years at Torrance Memorial Hospital, Dr. Donald Borden retired in 2005. Over the last few years, Dr. Peter Borden has recruited several excellent partners to his practice to form a comprehensive sub-specialized orthopaedic group known as Sports & Spine Orthopaedics. Currently Sports & Spine Orthopaedics has two primary locations in the South Bay (Torrance and El Segundo).
“Sports & Spine Orthopaedics functions as a comprehensive practice with the primary goal of providing the highest quality of patient care.”
“Peter Borden, MD, specializes in the treatment of sports medicine injuries with primary focus on the shoulder, knee and ankle. Allyson Estess, MD, also specializes in sports medicine injuries with emphasis on shoulder, knee and hip. Andrew Wasseff, MD, specializes in the treatment of total joint replacements and osteoarthritis of the hip and knee. Jennifer Hsu, MD, specializes in the treatment of hand, wrist and elbow injuries and currently serves as the chief of microvascular hand and upper extremity surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. George Cyril, MD, specializes in the treatment of nonsurgical spine conditions with an emphasis on pain management procedures to include epidural injections, facet injections, radio frequency rhizotomy and parasympathetic nerve blocks.”
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT SPORTS & SPINE ORTHOPAEDICS?
“Sports & Spine Orthopaedics functions as a comprehensive practice with the primary goal of providing the highest quality of patient care. Our partners, physical therapists, and staff work together as a team to help patients recover from their injuries as effectively as possible. Sports & Spine Orthopaedics provides the most recent and cutting-edge knowledge, procedures and technology that result in superior outcomes.”
AREA OF EXPERTISE Sports & Spine Orthopaedics currently has five specialists covering various specialties to include orthopaedic trauma and fractures; sports medicine; spine injuries; osteoarthritis of the shoulder, hip, and knee; upper extremity injuries of the hand, wrist and elbow; pain management; and total joint replacements.
OFF THE CLOCK WITH SPORTS & SPINE ORTHOPAEDICS The doctors within this orthopaedic practice are all previously competitive athletes who continue to enjoy exercise and sporting events recreationally and understand the balance of staying healthy through exercise. Having experienced their own orthopaedic injuries over the years, the doctors at Sports & Spine Orthopaedics understand how it feels to be the patient.

With more than 160 years of combined physician experience, our health care team works together to bring to the South Bay comprehensive, advanced orthopedic care. Our surgeons are board-certified in orthopedics and orthopedic surgery with specialized training in various areas, including advanced techniques in arthroscopy and minimally invasive procedures. Our facility features on-site MRI, physical and hand therapy including the finest bracing and splinting techniques. We offer pool therapy and treat all ages from toddlers to centenarians.
“Doing the right thing in your best interest.”
“Torrance Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Group was founded in 1971, and our main office has always been in Torrance—the primary hub of medical care for the South Bay. Although our Torrance office remains our primary location, as our medical group and the South Bay have grown we found a need to expand to better serve our patients living in Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo beaches, El Segundo and the surrounding area. We are proud to announce the opening our new, beautiful, contemporary, state-of-the-art El Segundo office @ Elevon. With this expansion we believe that a city-specific name, such as Torrance Orthopaedic, was somewhat limiting. The name Coastal Ortho reflects the love and appreciation of our home and lifestyle in the coastal communities where we all live.”
WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHY YOU PRACTICE?
“Whenever possible, we exhaust non-operative treatment before recommending surgery, but when it becomes necessary, our surgeons have advanced skills to speed patient recovery times for common problems to the most complex. The partners of Coastal Ortho are a like-minded group of orthopedists who practice evidencebased medicine. So philosophically they are all on the same page: Doing the right thing in your best interest.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS Several years ago during one of our annual medical missions to Central America we came upon a small boy with life-threatening disabilities who lived in the farmlands and jungle of Nicaragua. With the love and determination of one of our employees, we managed to get him a 10-year VISA to come to the United States and get the orthopedic and medical help he needed. Geral’s smile shines brightly to this day.
GOOD TIMES We are a family team of people who love the South Bay. Many of us were born and raised in this community, and several of the docs are second-generation physicians. The doctors and staff have diverse interests such as LA County beach lifeguarding, playing in a rock band and photography. We are active in the coastal lifestyle, but even if the sun is out, there is a good northwest swell or Mammoth gets dumped on, we will have a doctor available 24/7 to provide for your needs.

“Developing a licensed and certified ambulatory plastic surgery center for the past years 25 years and creating, in 1998, the first plastic surgery medical day spa in the South Bay, Spa Bella. As a woman, I love fashion, hair and makeup. I balance and cultivate this love, permitting my enthusiasm and skills to fuel my talents in my nonsurgical aesthetic practice. I have a reputation for delivering customized treatments and natural, aesthetically pleasing results when performing cosmetic injections such as Botox, facial/hand fillers, Kybella™ double chin reduction, skin peels and laser treatments.”
IS PLASTIC SURGERY AFFORDABLE TO EVERYONE?
“Absolutely! We take pride in designing a personal, customized beauty plan for every patient, working within their budget to achieve maximum results.”
WHAT IS A MEMORABLE MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER?
“My patients and the community have voted me the Best Cosmetic Surgeon and voted Spa Bella the Best Medical Day Spa in the South Bay for consecutive years. Being voted the Best Cosmetic Surgeon is an honor that humbles and inspires me to be the best for every patient who is under my care. I know that I must earn this honor with each patient every day of my career. I will never take it for granted.”
WISE WORDS Two attributes that separate my practice from others are “experience” and “repetition.” The 10,000-hour rule is an accomplishment I have fulfilled. My time, technical skills, team attitude and fortitude in the operating room have contributed to my reputation as an outstanding plastic surgeon. I can be creative yet maintain the fundamental discipline required to control and execute an exceptional outcome for every patient. Laser aesthetic surgery of the face, neck, breast and body is my expertise. Smartlipo™laserassisted liposuction allows me to contour the face, neck and body with more precision, less bruising and more rapid recovery. I can complement laser liposuction with non-invasive, 25-minute fat reduction using SculpSure™. I am currently working with Cynosure laser corporation investigating 25-minute SculpSure™ treatments for skin tightening.

WHAT TREND IS DEFINING YOUR SPECIALTY TODAY?
“Patients are increasingly requesting less invasive procedures with less recovery time and the ability to return to work quickly. More patients are turning to the multiple in-office services that can be done without general anesthesia or a long recovery period. I am currently one of a few physicians in the LA area offering the FDA-approved, non-invasive, laser-assisted facelift in my office.”
WHAT IS YOUR #1 PIECE OF ADVICE TO THOSE WHO CHOOSE A HEALTH CARE CAREER?
“Love what you do! I love seeing patients improve and feel better about themselves. I love operating and performing procedures in the office. I enjoy each day that I can use my skills and training in helping others.”
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR STYLE AND TECHNIQUE?
LazerLift is a one-time, one-hour, minimally invasive treatment designed to tighten the skin of the face and neck and remove excess fat using SmartLipo technology and no scalpel. This can be performed at the office and does not require general anesthesia. LazerLift uses the latest technology to take laser energy underneath your skin and stimulate collagen production in the dermis, which leads to improved skin elasticity, thickness and texture.
BEFORE & AFTER
“As a female surgeon in a largely male-dominated field, I bring the personal experience of aging in today’s society from a woman’s perspective. I actively try out new technologies and products on myself so I can better educate my patients about them.”
PRACTICE SPECIALTY Dr. Egan is a leading innovator in minimally invasive procedures and performs LazerLift—the only FDAapproved laser liposuction for the face and neck. For those patients who want minimal recovery time and an in-office procedure without the need for general anesthesia to address their jowls and neck, LazerLift is the perfect option.
Dr. Egan is dual board-certified in both otolaryngology head and neck surgery and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Her practice incorporates her surgical skills with a focus on aesthetics

“Yes, I have seen patients suffering from lipedema (fat disorder) also develop lymphedema (lymphatic system disorder). That is why my expertise in treating lymphedema is crucial in providing the appropriate diagnosis and treatment. When patients suffer from both disorders, I use the FLOSM lymphedema treatment program in conjunction with the integrated lipedema treatment program and LipisuctionSM surgery to provide the best treatment for these patients.”
“My philosophy has always been to provide patient-centered care. I really spend time getting to know my patients and their concerns. I have compulsive attention to detail, which shows in the office and in surgery. We have a warm and caring staff that treats patients like family. I’m thankful for all of our wonderful patients and friends in the South Bay and for their continuing support over the last 12 years.”
WHAT IS LIPEDEMA? Lipedema is an often misunderstood fat disorder in which pathologic fat accumulates in the legs and arms. This fat is resistant to standard weight loss methods and can be very painful. Lipedema patients may also have a compromised lymphatic system (part of the immune system), which is a different disorder called lymphedema.
I have found that lipedema patients are frequently misdiagnosed and poorly informed about their treatment options. Through in-depth

research into the lipedema disorder, I developed a new surgical technique called LipisuctionSM, which safely removes excess pathologic fat while protecting the patient’s lymphatic pathways. When I combine LipisuctionSM surgery with effective therapy, my integrated system provides the optimal result for Llpedema patients.
Earlier this year my daughter was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, a severe genetic disorder. Although her diagnosis has been devastating to us and she faces lifelong challenges, her diagnosis has brought our family closer together and we have grown stronger in faith. As a doctor, I have become even more compassionate because I can relate on a personal level with patients’ families and supporters.

AREA OF EXPERTISE
WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHY OF YOUR PRACTICE?
Karen Alfonso, MD, pediatrician, is a mother of two boys. She chose pediatrics because she loves children, and their innocence and honesty constantly remind her of the more important values in life. She treats her patients as she would any family member and enjoys guiding them toward healthy lifestyles. In her free time, Dr. Alfonso enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, indoor rock climbing, traveling and exploring new cultures and foods. She speaks Spanish and Tagalog.
Karen Alfonso, MD: “I believe the practice of medicine—especially in the field of pediatrics—is a partnership. I work hand-in-hand with parents as a care team rather than as an authoritarian to make the best medical decisions for their children. After all, they know their kids best and can offer us much more insight than what I can observe in a 15-minute visit. Together we make the decisions that will help their children live a healthier lifestyle.”
WHICH SKILL IS MOST IMPORTANT IN CARING FOR PATIENTS?
Peter Kaneshige, MD: “I believe the most important skill for a physician caring for patients is empathy—the capacity to understand or feel what patients are experiencing, from their perspective. Obviously a physician needs to have the proper knowledge and clinical skills to provide excellent care. But the ability to listen well and really understand patients’ concerns— and then discuss a management plan—usually results in the best outcomes.” Karen Alfonso, MD: “The most important skill that a physician can have beyond medical knowledge is the ability to listen and to make time when it is needed. In our fast-paced, technologically advanced world, it is easy to move forward quickly to address immediately the patient concerns. There are certainly visits that require more succinct, straight-to-the-point evaluations, but then there are moments when it becomes vital to stop the typing, put the computer away, look the patient in the eye and listen. I believe this is still an important part of our physical exam and vital to ensuring we are treating our patients as a whole and addressing their needs appropriately.”
Peter Kaneshige, MD, internal medicine, has been practicing primary care medicine for more than 22 years. He recently moved his practice from Long Beach to Torrance, where he and his family have been residents for more than 25 years. He looks forward to bringing his experience to care for the South Bay community that is “Ohana” to him, which in Hawaiian culture means family. He enjoys music, especially watching his two teenage kids at their various performances.
Salvacion Torre, MD, pediatrician, has been practicing medicine for more than 30 years. Originally from the Philippines, Dr. Torre came to the United States to complete her medical education and decided to make this her home. Dr. Torre was an active-duty medical officer with the United States Army and retired from the military in 2003, after 24 years of service.

smile. The result didn’t match her personality. She didn’t want orthodontics to move teeth to proper positions, so we did some creative work to correct her smile. Now she has a balanced look that is more feminine in proportion to enhance her smile!
HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE?
“One of the things patients dread about visits to the dentist is getting numb. Sometimes despite our best efforts, injections can be uncomfortable and the soft tissue effects can linger after your appointment. We are proud to offer The Wand computer-assisted anesthesia system, which painlessly numbs a single tooth without numbing more than what is actually needed to anesthetize. What a difference!”
TELL US ABOUT RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN YOUR FIELD.
“There is increasing awareness from patients, dentists and other medical specialties about the significance of the airway and how it impacts dental and sleep issues for patients. It has opened conversations with patients that previously weren’t had. It has been positive for dentistry.”
HOW WOULD YOUR PATIENTS DESCRIBE YOUR APPROACH?
WISE WORDS There aren’t many patients who enjoy flossing, so when you get in there it’s critical that your technique is correct. String floss is preferred because it allows better adaptation to remove plaque in between teeth. Once you get past the contact between teeth, contour the floss like the letter C and wipe up and down a few times. Then reverse your C and wipe the next tooth. And if you have something stuck in between your teeth often tying a double knot in the floss will help pass stubborn things like popcorn kernels.
“I’m very easygoing at work. Patients are usually nervous when they go to the dentist; the last thing they need is intimidation or someone telling them what they need without explanation. My approach with patients has always come from the perspective of being their friend. I try to find a way to connect with everyone when I first meet them, and I want them to know I’m their advocate.”

It is never too late to have a confident smile. More than 40% of our patients are adults. Advancements in technology cannot only dramatically reduce treatment time (in some cases by as much as 50%) but can also offer a variety of hidden and inconspicuous treatment options.
“Delivering the highest quality treatment is my top priority. Every decision I make in my practice is based upon one simple rule: will this decision improve the patient experience?”
HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY?
“Seeing the confidence patients exude from their new smile is really rewarding.”
“We support a variety of community programs as diverse as the interests of our patient base. From education to sports to arts, we are engaged in supporting programs that put our patients’ beautiful smiles to good use throughout the South Bay.”
WHAT TREND IS DEFINING YOUR SPECIALTY TODAY?
“The technology available in modern orthodontic care has dramatically improved the patient experience. Increased patient comfort, reduced treatment time and less visible treatment options are the results of these advances. In fact, many adults are opting for orthodontic treatment who never would have considered it before.”
WHAT’S MOST REWARDING ABOUT YOUR WORK?
“Seeing the confidence patients exude from their new smile is really rewarding. However, I also enjoy getting to know each patient throughout their treatment.”
OFF THE CLOCK WITH DR. SUMMER Spending time with my family is my top priority outside of the office. The South Bay is an amazing place to raise a family. I also love to travel and experience new places. When I’m in town, I enjoy yoga, Pilates and walking on The Strand.

Michelle Luciano: “As a Registered Dental Assistant I work with with different people and different cases. I’m helping people work on the smile they’ve always wanted. For many patients that could mean fixing a chipped tooth, straightening with Invisalign or whitening with Zoom, all of which boosts their self-confidence.”
HOW DOES YOUR PRACTICE PROVIDE PERSONALIZED ATTENTION?
“I’m helping people work on the smile they’ve always wanted.”
ML:“Patients come to our office for individual needs and concerns. Some want to know what their insurance covers, and often we can check into their benefits prior to their initial visit. For others, it may be addressing an emergency such as pain or trauma. Often patients want information on the latest technology and how it could benefit them.”

The ability to render accurate digital impressions now can be achieved without the conventional impression materials. Additionally, the scanner can record high-definition impressions and lifelike colors, improving communication to patients and to our dental laboratory technical team. This allows us to see the final restoration in 3-D prior to its fabrication and predict the final outcome.
WHAT ATTRIBUTE IS MOST IMPORTANT IN CARING FOR PATIENTS?
ML: “Listening to the patient. If we listen, then we can figure it out. They come in and are nervous and anxious—but are much calmer once they realize we’ve heard them. Secondly, being able to explain their treatment in their language—simplify it and break it down so they can understand. You can see it on their face as the appointment progresses—relief and gratitude, followed by an ‘Is that it?’”

“We treat the whole family. You can start at our office when you are 1 and stay until you are 101! Patients want a dental home—a place where they can trust our recommendations and where we strive to build relationships that last years (even decades). The patients’ experience is always our first concern.”
WHICH ATTRIBUTE IS MOST IMPORTANT IN CARING FOR PATIENTS? “We feel being empathetic is incredibly important. If you are able to understand what someone else is feeling, that is the best way to be able to comfort them. Our team is constantly trying to improve the appointment experience, and that starts with a caring and compassionate approach.”
“The patients’ experience is always our first concern.”
HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE?
“We view the radiographs/photos/proposed treatment on a TV monitor with the patient. Having a screen to view this on sounds simple, but it is the clearest way for patients to understand what is going on in their mouth. Going into a surgical appointment where the patient knows why we are doing a certain procedure is, above anything else, my best aid in patient education and communication.”
DO YOU FEEL IT’S IMPORTANT TO GIVE BACK AND SUPPORT THOSE IN NEED?
“We do. We support several organizations and events, including the LA25 Foundation for the Arts, CDA Cares and the Neptunian Women’s club. Dr. Brian also makes mouth guards for his alma mater, Mira Costa High School.”
WISE WORDS Here in the South Bay we have fluoride in our tap water. When our teeth are weakened by an acid—a sports drink, a soda or from getting sick to our stomach—most of us reach for our toothbrush immediately after. In reality, once your teeth are “etched” by an acid, even your tongue

AREA OF EXPERTISE Everyone in the office—from the patient coordinators at the front desk to the assistants in the back—is aware how stressful it can be for a patient to come in for dental work. We try to do anything we can to help make the appointment more enjoyable and less stressful.

A South Bay LASIK patient said, ‘Had my surgery yesterday. My only regret is why I waited so long. Just do it. The staff there are amazing. Very helpful in everything. I’m so happy!’”
AREA OF EXPERTISE Laser vision correction is a field of medicine that has always enjoyed frequent advances that only serve to improve accuracy and quality of results. Recently the FDA has approved a treatment that promises to be a real game-changer: Corneal Collagen Crosslinking for kerataconus. We are offering this treatment at our NVISION centers.

“In the past few years there have been many advances in the field of pain management.”
“In the past few years there have been many advances in the field of pain management. I feel the most promising are the technological advances in spinal cord stimulation and the research conducted in regenerative medicine. Stimulators have MRI compatibility, are smaller in size, and the stimulation delivered is much more comfortable for the patients. Studies are being conducted in regenerative medicine throughout the world demonstrating anti-inflammatory effects and possible healing properties of platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cells when injected into joints, intervertebral discs and soft tissue like tendons and ligaments.”
I want to educate more people about Botox injections for migraines. It is very effective in decreasing the number of migraines per month so the patient is not stuck balancing under-treating headaches with medication-overuse headaches. For patients who experience more than 15 headache days a month with headaches lasting more than four to six hours who have tried other preventative medications, this could really give them a huge piece of their life back. I love that it is a clinic procedure that takes 10 minutes or less and there is no down time for recovery.
