• Before Terranea debuted in 2009, artists, architects, authors and other creators found inspiration in the coastal majesty of the Palos Verdes
Peninsula. Here we offer a short history of those draftsmen and dreamers with designs on this pristine stretch of California coastline. written by FABIENNE MARSH
To fully grasp the allure of the Peninsula, one need only follow the road toward Terranea.
At the north entrance to the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the road is suddenly green— dwarfed on either side by massive banks of eucalyptus trees. In Malaga Cove the drive curves toward the sea, and the views open up and surprise … like a magician’s reveal. The Olmsted Brothers, behind such American treasures as New York’s Central Park, paid close attention to circuit roads, climatic studies and nurseries on their projects. John Charles Olmsted and Fred Dawson, the original visionaries of the Peninsula landscape, began work in 1914 but were interrupted by the dawn of World War I. The nursery they developed took root in the 1920s when hundreds of thousands of trees and shrubs were planted by Farnham B. Martin, including 10 varieties of eucalyptus. After John Charles Olmsted

died in 1920, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. left Massachusetts to assume leadership of the plan for Palos Verdes Estates, retiring to the home built by Myron Hunt in 1925 on the bluffs of lower Malaga Cove. The National Register of Historic Places cites Farnham Martin Park as “virtually unchanged” since Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. designed it. Carrying forth his father’s principles, Frederick made use of the existing sloped terrain and local material (Palos Verdes stone); he added the fountain as a formal feature. The stone terraces and dappled lawn, with gently curving paths framed by poplars and elms, lead to a pastoral landscape that invites people to gather within an elliptical perimeter. The park grounds, adjacent to the Malaga Cove Library, represent New York’s Central Park fountain in miniature—a tribute to the versatility of the Olmsteds, whose portfolio includes more than 5,500 parks, arboretums, cities, cemeteries, college campuses, world’s fairs, private estates and residential communities. Landscape historian Christine Edstrom O’Hara calls Malaga Cove “the most complete example of the Olmsted Brothers’ regional approach to design in Southern California.” Today a modest wood sign for “Olmsted Place” is barely visible under a pink Indian

hawthorn bush, next to the flagpole in Malaga Cove, which is precisely the way Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. would have wanted it: “I have all my life been considering distant effects and always sacrificing immediate success and applause to that of the future.”
THE PENINSULA AND ITS LEVIATHANS Portuguese Point and Inspiration Point are much like they were when Juan Cabrillo sailed here in 1542. On any given day from December through May, whales are spouting and breaching where once they were hunted. From 1874 to 1877, more than 2,100 barrels of whale oil were harvested by Portuguese whalers, giving the Bend its name. Today in gentler times, on the cliffside patio of the Point Vicente Interpretive Center, trained volunteers from the American Cetacean Society, the Cabrillo Whalewatch Program, and the general public document northbound and southbound migrations, in addition to recording behavioral marvels like rolling, breaching, skyhopping, courtship and even nursing. The story of Jonah and the whale (or “big fish” depending on the translation) is recounted in Judaism (Book of Jonah),

Islam (Qur’an, Chapter 37) and Christianity (New Testament, Matthew and Luke). After defying God by sailing in the opposite direction God had commanded, Jonah encounters a massive storm, for which the crew blames him. Cargo is dumped to lighten the ship, and after Jonah is thrown overboard,
he is swallowed by a whale—in whose belly he spends three days and three nights before God orders the whale to spew Jonah out. After redeeming himself in God’s eyes, Jonah emerges as a beloved religious figure in Judaism, Islam and Christianity, all of which mourned the recent destruction of his tomb

in Mosul, Iraq. The less fortunate whale earned the reputation as a Leviathan or sea monster, inspiring artists and writers for more than 2,000 years. In the Gothic illuminated manuscript The Hours of Catherine of Cleves, the whale is a Hellmouth, devouring sinners damned in the Last Judgment. “From its mouth go flaming torches; sparks of fire leap out. Out of its nostrils comes smoke, as from a boiling pot and burning rushes. Its breath kindles coals, and a flame comes out of its mouth.” – Book of Job, chapter 41 In Melville’s Moby Dick, Captain Ahab’s first mate, Starbuck, who stands up to Ahab’s “quenchless feud” with the white whale, is now mostly known as a coffee chain. “Oh Ahab,” cries Starbuck, begging Ahab to desist from his monomaniacal mission, “Moby Dick seeks thee not.” [He’s not after you!] “It is thou, thou, that madly seekest him!

“I paint because it’s going away.” – Thomas Redfield gouged by the surf around the time of the Ice Age, the ancient terraces appear upholstered in green and step broadly down to the sea. The peninsula’s gullies, canyons, cliffs and coves are teeming with wildlife. All plein air artists are late, to crib from the Mad Hatter, for a very important date: with the sun. The 150-year-old tradition dating back to Claude Monet and other French landscape artists is about painting on-site to capture a vivid impression of the scene. What Monet did for his backyard in Giverny—or for haystacks, or for Rouen Cathedral—is precisely what the Portuguese Bend Artist Colony is doing the hundreds of times they paint open spaces on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. In Malaga Cove, where Amy Sidrane painted her Peacock (on display at the resort), two birds are stopping traffic with their haughty, unrushed strut. Off RAT (Right After Torrance) Beach, pelicans glide overhead and dive-bomb into the sea—another near miss for the dolphins, whose lacquered arches proceed rhythmically past The Neighborhood Church. In Lunada Bay, where Richard Humphrey and Dan Pinkham— co-founders of the Portuguese Bend Artist Colony—went to school, the land opens up. Tart green lawns, fuchsia bougainvillea and massive Australian fig trees make way for hills carpeted in nasturtium, purple ice plants or, depending on the season, fields of mustard that fizz in Richard’s Above the Cove on a Spring Day or blaze in Stephen Mirich’s Almost Spring.
24 Terranea Magazine, L.A.’s Oceanfront Resort
Along the western shore of this road, cliffs of every shape and color jut out to the sea. In The Cliffs and Sea at Point Vicente, Richard has captured this perpendicular majesty with his portrait of the lighthouse. In Insignificance Kevin Prince paints the light on the sea above the Point Vicente lighthouse with unblinking ferocity.

CELEBRATION / THE PACIFIC MUSE
A CHAPEL WITH A PEDIGREE Palos Verdes Drive continues south to the chapel that celebrates wayfarers—those pilgrims on life’s journey to a sacred place. Architect Lloyd Wright, son of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, drew his inspiration for Wayfarers Chapel from the redwood forests of northern California. Its trees, with soaring trunks and arching branches, form a natural cathedral that Lloyd sought to convey using glass and sky, trees and stone, sky and water—all with the 30and 60-degree angles found in nature. The Swedenborgian Church chose the Palos Verdes coast as the site for its memorial to Emanuel Swedenborg, the 18th-century Swedish philosopher and mystic who espoused tolerance and holistic living. With no permanent congregation, the Swedenborigian chapel was conceived to nourish and restore the wayfarer’s soul on life’s journey. Helen Keller, a Swedenborgian since the age of 16, resonated with the church’s welcoming creed. “It makes me feel,” she writes, “as if I had been restored to equality with those who have all their faculties.” This awakening was Helen’s spiritual equivalent to her breakthrough at the water pump with teacher Anne Sullivan. After six years of “dark, soundless imprisonment,” she writes, “that word ‘water’ dropped into my mind like the sun in a frozen winter world.” Across the channel in Santa Catalina, the sailors call the chapel’s tower “God’s candle.” Lloyd named his architectural exclamation point the “Hallelujah” tower; it chimes on the hour, and its 16-bell carillon peals after every wedding ceremony.

WRITER IN RESIDENCE At Portuguese Point across Palos Verdes Drive South, the Harden Gatehouse—where Joan Didion and her husband, John Dunne, brought home their infant daughter, Quintana— is immortalized in The Year of Magical Thinking, a memoir in which, after the loss of her husband and then her daughter, she revisits the young family’s rental home by the sea. “I experienced a sudden rush of memories: getting out of the car on that highway to open the gate so that John could drive through; watching the tide come in and float a car that was sitting on our beach to be shot for a commercial; sterilizing bottles for Quintana’s formula while the gamecock that lived on the property followed me companionably from window to window.” The year was 1966. Joan had brought her adopted daughter home from St. John’s Hospital, having left New York City and famously rejected it in her 1967 essay for the Saturday Evening Post, “Farewell to the Enchanted City,” which became “Goodbye to All That” in her iconic collection of essays, Slouching Towards Bethlehem. The family would live in Palos Verdes briefly, then in Malibu, only to return to New York City. In this poignant excerpt from her September 25, 2005 essay “After Life” in The New York Times Magazine, she again returned to memories of Palos Verdes, seeking reunion. “In my unexamined mind there was always a point, John’s and my death, at which the tracks would converge for a final time. On the Internet I recently found aerial photographs of the house on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in which we had lived when we were first married, the house to which we had brought Quintana home from St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica and put her in her bassinet by the wisteria in the box garden. The photographs, part of the California Coastal Records Project, the point of which was to document the entire California coastline, were hard to read conclusively, but the house as it had been when we lived in it appeared to be gone. The tower where the gate had been seemed intact but the rest of the structure looked unfamiliar. There seemed to be a swimming pool where the wisteria and box garden had been. The area itself was identified as ‘Portuguese Bend Landslide.’ You could see the slumping of the hill where the slide had occurred. You could also see, at the base of the cliff on the point, the cave into which we used to swim when the tide was at exactly the right flow. The swell of clear water. That was one way my two systems could have converged.”

Celebrating nature’s gifts and a belief that everything is interrelated, Terranea’s talented Executive Chef Bernard Ibarra passionately harvests ingredients
from the resort gardens and local growers to create exceptional farm-to-table dining experiences. written by DIANE E. BARBER
photographed by ALAN DE HERRERA styled by KARA MICKELSON
“Food awakens all of your senses. Not only by eating it and how it tastes, but also by the way it is harvested and prepared.” Raised on a farm in the French side of the Basque country, Chef Ibarra’s family lived modestly and relied heavily on the earth and the sea to sustain them. “My mother taught me many things, such as gardening and how to jar tomatoes and other produce that we grew. During rainy days my sister and I would go snail hunting with her and process the snails we gathered with salt that we harvested from the sea.”
terranea.com
With a deep appreciation for foods being distinctive to each of the four seasons, Chef Ibarra stresses how important farm-totable eating is–not only from a nutritional standpoint but to also live in harmony with the natural cycle of life. With grocery store shelves filled with fruits and vegetables that have been mass-produced and the abundance of off-season imported foods, connection with the seasons has been lost. During his upbringing in the Basque region, Chef Ibarra and his family looked forward to the seasonal harvests. To ensure his young son experiences a small slice of the farm life he knew as a boy, Chef Ibarra planted a home garden and fruit trees for his family to enjoy. He has also worked creatively and tirelessly to bring his family tradition of sustainability to the kitchens and dining tables at Terranea. Reminiscent of his childhood snail-hunting days, he and members of his staff gather buckets of water from the ocean off cielo

point. The water is then transported to the resort’s sea salt conservatory, evaporates, and a slush of salt remains that is carefully dried. The salt is often smoked or flavored with lemons, rosemary, sage and other herbs picked from the resort’s grounds. The chef adds this to dishes for a distinct, mineral-laden finishing touch. When asked about the quality of the salt, Chef Ibarra replies, “Before I started
collecting the salt, I learned that Abalone Cove received a 97 out of 100 points for water quality, and I sent a sample of sea water and a first batch of salt to the lab for analysis. The salt tested close to 27% sodium content (table salt is typically 40%), and it has more minerals than most salts. The lab tech who analyzed the salt says it is one of the best he has tested!” As in the Basque region, Chef Ibarra has both the sea and the land at his
fingertips to indulge his European roots and his art of cooking. His longing for the joy of feeling the earth in his hands before preparing a meal fostered his special interest in sustaining the resort’s mar’sel garden, which yields fresh ingredients for the daily menu. Lettuces, snap peas, fennel, tomatoes, herbs, chili peppers, cauliflower and other vegetables are gathered from it to complement meals or to feature an
ingredient in a special dish. Reaching outside Terranea, he has also had the pleasure to meet nearby landowner Jim York. “I have enjoyed a great partnership with Terranea from the beginning and am happy to expand the relationship by being a part of the farm-to-table program with the resort,” says Jim.
York provided a plot of land called Catalina View Gardens—a neighboring source for avocados, citrus, olives, tomatoes and peppercorns. Chef Ibarra continues to expand the gardens and the local fresh food supply for Terranea. Inspired by his time spent on a kibbutz years ago in Israel, the chef is expanding access and involvement with Terranea
associates to plant, tend and harvest organically grown seasonal produce. Though the culinary department is the concept’s driving force, the farm-toTerranea offering is ingrained in the resort’s culture. Various garden varietals of tomatoes, beans, squash, eggplant, lettuces, chili pepper, lemongrass, gingerroot and other produce are

naturally grown and planted so the farm-totable experience will touch every restaurant at Terranea with various ingredients and in varying degrees. From the glistening waters of the Pacific Ocean and the sunbasked hills of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, there is a local cornucopia of fresh ingredients for Chef Ibarra and his culinary team to bring a unique Southern California farmto-table experience to the restaurants at Terranea. “Gardens are one of the few things that keep us in tune with nature. We need to celebrate and patronize them,” he says. In addition to fresh greens and fruits, honey figures prominently in the local harvest, with sweet nectar drawn from the combs of the chef’s own personal hives.

COMMUNITY / COMING HOME
here’s a little bit of magic that happens when you finally settle into your vacation … once you’ve allowed yourself to truly let go, when the concierge anticipates your needs before you do and everyone knows you by name. What if that immediate feeling of recognition and total comfort could be yours every time you return to Terranea? For the owners of the Villas at Terranea Resort, those final moments of perfection—where familiarity, relaxation and indulgence merge into the perfect stay—come without an expiration date. For them, the lines between the comfort of home and the spoils of a luxury getaway are blissfully blurred … and the benefits are plenty. Terranea sits on more than 100 acres of land surrounded by three sides of oceanfront bluffs overlooking the rugged beauty of the Pacific. Boasting four incredible pools—each designed to accommodate guests traveling with or without children—a 50,000-squarefoot spa and state-of-the-art fitness and wellness center with both indoor and outdoor space, eight mouth-watering dining options and an award-winning golf course, it’s easy to see what draws people to this stunning resort. But the advantages that come with being an owner are why some people choose to purchase a Terranea Villa, returning to the property again and again.
64 Terranea Magazine, L.A.’s Oceanfront Resort
For some, those advantages include bringing family together. In a time when living states away from loved ones is increasingly common, the Villas at Terranea serve as a gathering spot—a home base for everyone to enjoy collectively, without the typical stresses that come with hosting. Family members who live in different states can purchase a Villa together, offering aunts and uncles, cousins and grandparents a place where shared memories can be built—a family destination-turned-tradition that can be passed on generation after generation through the ownership of the property. For others, it’s about expanding the capabilities of their primary residence. Some local owners use their Terranea property as a guesthouse, a weekend getaway or as their preferred home for hosting dinner parties and family gatherings during the holidays. With full access to Terranea’s staff, owners can host a Villa full of guests—and do so while enjoying their company completely stress-free. Owners also enjoy a dedicated resort staff during each stay. In addition to their VIP status and the number of privileges that come with ownership, it’s the 24-hour access to the Owners’ Club, a concierge that takes Terranea’s standard of service to a whole new level of excellence
with check-in benefits, golf cart transportation, priority dining and more. Imagine arriving at your Villa and walking into a fully stocked kitchen filled with everything on your grocery list … no shopping required. Not interested in cooking? Your concierge can make your dining reservations or, better yet, arrange for a chefprepared, in-house meal. Invite your friends to your home and enjoy a cooking demonstration from a member of Terranea’s culinary staff. Request a sunset cruise or head out for a whale-watching excursion. If wellness is higher on your list of priorities, owners have access to on-call trainers and nutritionists for a personalized experience for each return to your Terranea home. A mere 45 minutes from Los Angeles, the Villas make an excellent spot for entertaining clients or colleagues. Additionally, owners can donate a weekend to a charity fundraiser or even offer their Villa to family and friends to enjoy. When the owners or their family and friends are not utilizing property, the Villas can be rented through Terranea’s professional rental program, or by the owners themselves. A legacy real estate investment, the Villas can be passed down through generations or even owned by private corporations for entertaining clients.

The level of hospitality each owner receives while staying in his or her Villa is equally customizable. Whether you opt for a fully at-home feel (cooking in the kitchen and minimizing housekeeping visits) or you choose to dive into the resort experience with the finest luxuries only a request away—or interweave the two options—owners have complete control over their experience. Every moment is their own and tailored to perfection. terranea.com

COMMUNITY / COMING HOME
While this seemingly endless list of benefits, entertainment and indulgences certainly adds to the allure of the property, ownership truly takes the experience to a whole new level. Here at this majestic, ocean-side escape, a sense of community resides—a refuge with both serenity and familiarity. The sigh of relief that comes with opening the door of your home after a long day, the ease of your local restaurant where the chef may even surprise you with your favorite dish, the comfort of shuffling through your kitchen for a midnight snack … they all exist at this world-class resort. From the start of your drive along the coast to the welcome you receive, by name, upon your arrival, the weight of the world begins to diminish the moment you set foot on the property. Ocean breezes fill your Villa, and you are greeted daily with the most breathtaking views and a seascape rich in marine life. There is a commonality between Terranea owners because they were drawn from all over the world to the same little piece of paradise. It’s the luxurious amenities that make Terranea a world-class resort, but it is the essence of the Terranea experience that drives people to purchase a Villa and make it their home away from home.

DESIGNER
IN RESIDENCE Celebrated jewelry and fashion designer Chan Luu
seeks creative inspiration from across globe. interviewed by JENNIE NUNN
Los Angeles–based designer Chan Luu has definitely found her calling in fashion and jewelry design. The South Vietnam-born designer and graduate of Boston University—with a degree in business administration—got her start in 1996 creating baubles ranging from leather necklaces with hand-painted shell pendants to gold chandelier earrings, and layering necklaces made with semiprecious stones such as black onyx, garnet and amethyst. Now, 19 years later, the lauded fashion and accessories maven (who once owned a boutique at Brick Walk in Rolling Hills Estates) has graced the pages of numerous publications including Elle, InStyle and Vogue for her ready-to-wear pieces, cashmere and silk scarves and bohemianinspired leather wrap beaded bracelets. She’s also one of the featured jewelry designers at marea boutique at Terranea. Here the tastemaker shares what she loves about her job … and three go-to pieces recently launched for spring.
You have fashion roots right here on the Peninsula. How long did you live in the South Bay?

CL: I lived in Palos Verdes for 14 years when I owned my Chan Luu retail store. I loved living here.
How did you get started in design? CL: Although I am not a trained jeweler but rather a fashion designer, I have always had a passion for accessories. As a young buyer for my retail stores, I dreamed of having my own line. I am always looking for inspiration for my designs by traveling the world and interacting with different cultures.

SEEING STARS “Ochre sea stars in Southern California have been dying due to an unexplained wasting disease that is currently being studied at UC Santa Cruz. Ever since then it has been almost impossible to find any ochre sea stars on our tide pool adventures. Last November I took a family of three down to Sacred Cove to check out the tide pools, and we discovered a very healthy ochre sea star! It was the first that had been seen in the area in a year. We sent the pictures to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center so that they would be able to send the information to the correct marine biologists.” – Lauren Bergloff, Redondo Beach Naturalist at pointe discovery

DISCOVERY / MEETINGS
BUSINESS MEETS PLEASURE In addition to being one of California’s premier destination resorts, Terranea also draws business and community leaders for one-day or week-long
meetings and conferences. So what makes the resort the perfect recipe
for success? We asked Bob Treadway, owner of Treadway Meetings, and
Cathy Swinford, education and meetings administrator for the Society of Petroleum Engineers, to discuss the perks of doing business by the sea. Written by FABIENNE MARSH
When did you first hear about Terranea?
only be found in California, are reasons that keep us going back to Terranea.
Bob Treadway: I went to Marineland when I was a child, so at first I thought, “I’m gonna fly down, and I’m not going to like it.” Besides, I’m spoiled. I have been to so many great resorts for my clients.
It is a beautiful place. How do your clients get any work done? CS: The resort is large yet feels intimate because the layout works. The meeting spaces are perfect. No matter where you are, you are never interrupted by overflow from any other events. Even the lobby hits the high points, with its amazing view, paintings and photography.
What won you over? BT: Everything! The lobby, the location, the flow, the comfort, the views, the ocean, the whales and the warmth of the staff. Cathy Swinford: The engineers in my industry love places with a story. Some had visited when it was Marineland. Many loved the fact that the opening of the Batman television series was filmed in the cave at Terranea. And they were all fascinated when the geologist leading our field trip pointed out the Monterey Shale Outcrop near the Batman cave.
What’s the Monterey Shale Outcrop? CS: A big oil and gas formation in California.
terranea.com
What else stands out about the resort’s meeting potential?
How do your clients respond to the postMarineland landscape? BT: They rave about it! Terranea did an amazing job of tying the resort into the environment. Where else can you walk out of a meeting room and see dolphin schools or hang out in the spa pool
and watch whales? I’ve had to put my iPhone 5 in panorama mode. CS: They could not believe how amazing it was. Our engineers also love the whales, seals, porpoises and dolphins. The harmony and respect for the landscape, along with geological formations that can

hermès. time reinvented.
cape cod nantucket hermès, the alchemist of time, introduces the cape cod nantucket, a radiant watch that captures light to bring a special glow to your wrist. it blithely adapts to its wearer’s whims thanks to its interchangeable strap. yet it remains forever elegant, slender and playful, revelling in the passing of time rather than fearing it, thanks to its case fashioned in silver , a silver alloy exclusive to hermès.
