KEVIN ENSTROM Step into Bandrika Studios in Tarzana, where Kevin Enstrom is fresh off the heels of laying down guitar tracks for the upcoming Hulu film Mystery of Her, and it’s immediately apparent: He feels most at home holding a guitar. The Canada native says his love affair with the instrument began in 7th grade in Ontario when his homeroom teacher began playing for the class. “I was immediately obsessed with the beauty of the sound. Classical guitar is like a miniature orchestra. You can imitate a cello, a violin, percussion. You can play bright like a trumpet or warm like a viola. This captured my attention immediately. It was no longer four chords and a band. The music can be so complex, but the outcome is a simple emotional experience.” The 30-year-old says his game was seriously upped when he met and began learning from the American classical guitar virtuoso Christopher Parkening. When Kevin was in 9th grade he took a master class taught by the musician. The experience was a confidence builder and Kevin ultimately became a protégé of Parkening. “A big lesson he taught me was to strive for excellence rather than success. Excellence will pit you against yourself to grow each day, compared to no other outside factors. Success, on the other hand, has no clear lines and tends to lean toward financial or societal success.” And in what can only be described as a full-circle mentorship, the two currently work together at Pepperdine University. Kevin’s mentor holds the chair of classical guitar at the university, while Kevin is an adjunct professor of guitar. While he hopes one day to work as a soloist with the

While living in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Highland Park, Margaret began to make paper sculptures of her neighbors’ gates. A sculpture called “15th, 17th and Pennsylvania,” recently on view at her solo exhibition Divisions at CSUN’s Soraya Art Gallery in Northridge, is Griffith’s pointed interpretation of the gates of the Trump White House, which she constructed using a gilded Tyvek fabric. “It’s like I’m going to remove these obstacles that really are serving as a BandAid for greater problems,” she says. “I wanted to make these gates that were kind of fallen and droopy, kind of like a frilly curtain.” During the pandemic, Margaret completed a series of wall-mounted pieces with intricate, off-center patterns inspired by perforated steel patterns on trash cans and grates. “I’ve been just really interested in this idea,” she says. “You can’t quite focus. You can’t quite get your footing. You can’t quite get still. I may be over-analyzing, but I think that may very well represent how I’ve felt, and probably many of us have felt, during the pandemic.” Still fascinated with boundaries, she is currently working on a richly detailed hand-cut hanging sculpture inspired by a wire gate in San Jose, which was installed to keep homeless people from encroaching upon a residential neighborhood. Plans are underway for the piece to be part of a group show at the Brand Gallery in Glendale this January. For Margaret, this sculpture, like all her art, is not an overt statement but something even more powerful. As she puts it, “It’s an invitation to contemplate what is really happening.” ■

My parents’ first meeting was as unique as the future they would eventually share. It happened when their wanderlust drew them from completely disparate backgrounds to a chartered three-masted schooner sailing the Caribbean. My mother was hired as a deckhand, my father a deep-sea diver. On her first day, my mother found herself feeding fish to sea lions. In awe of it all, she spotted a particularly large mammal, which, rising from the water’s depths, revealed a man in black diving gear. As he removed his mask, she recalls herself whispering, “This is the most beautiful man I have ever seen.” That night, she wrote to her mother declaring that she had met the man she would marry. Patricia Knop and Zalman King were 19. The year was 1963. Three years later, I was born. My sister, Gillian, entered our world two years after that. By that time, my parents had already migrated west to Los Angeles. Their first accommodation was, quite literally, a broom closet in Santa Monica. Soon they were renting a bungalow next door to Jim Morrison before eventually purchasing our family home in Venice. It was in this house, the house of my childhood, where dreams came to life and the person I would become was formed. As for dreams, my parents had no shortage. My mother rose from abject poverty to become a talented

It all began when painter and mandala artist Malathi Iyengar wanted to introduce her 6-year-old daughter, Lakshmi, to her Indian heritage. She zeroed in on bharata natya, India’s classical dance form, which she believed would impart the history, culture and traditions of her native land. To further her goal, Malathi, who had moved to Los Angeles in 1974 with her husband, Suresh, returned to her birthplace, Bangalore, South India. She was hoping to find a dancer who could teach Lakshmi not only the art form’s steps, gestures and rhythms, but its beauty, elegance, spirituality and ancient stories. It all came together when she met Guru Narmada, a classically trained dancer who agreed to mentor not only Lakshmi, but Malathi as well. Twice a year for the next eight years, the dancer made the 22-hour flight from Bangalore to LA, where at the family’s Sherman Oaks home, she trained Malathi and Lakshmi. For both mother and daughter, it became about more than embracing their heritage. It wasn’t long before both realized they had what it takes to become exceptional dancers. In 1992 at the age of 38, when most dancers retire from performance, Malathi gave her debut solo concert. Lakshmi, who would train some days for nine hours, gave hers the following year at the age of 11. “Performing my dance solo was just the beginning of my dance journey,” says Malathi. “I had to ask myself how to maintain the connection between my cultural

Predictions are around 3.5% on average by June this year.” DO YOU THINK HOME PRICES WILL CONTINUE TO SOAR IN 2022? “I think appreciation will slow in the coming year, which is a good thing. A market can’t sustain 12% to 16% year-to-year growth in prices. Predictions by national economists indicate that appreciation rates will slow to the 4% to 5% level this year. Inventory remains at historic lows in most price categories. Until that changes, prices will remain high.” TELL US ABOUT COMPETITION IN THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY. “There is plenty of business out there for good agents. Cooperating is the name of the game. I have no patience for unethical clients or agents, and I align myself with like-minded clients. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes in a purchase or sale, and most of my clients understand this process. Having done this for so long, they know how to help me navigate any situation.” WHAT ARE KEY FACTORS FOR FINDING A GOOD FIT WHEN CHOOSING A BROKER TO WORK WITH? “The key factor when looking for a broker is choosing one who listens and truly understands what the client wants from their buying or selling experience. At the end of the day, it is all about the client; you need to make sure you are working with a broker who is going to meet your needs. They should be honest when it comes to pricing the home and transparent about the transaction process. You need an agent who is going to achieve the goals you set forth and does it professionally.” WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A TOP EARNER IN YOUR FIELD? “Experience, time and knowledge. They all go together. In this industry, no one is going to hand you business. You need to get out there and start from the bottom and work your way up. For 40 years, Tail o’ the Cock, which is featured prominently in the new movie Licorice Pizza, reigned supreme on Ventura Boulevard. During its heyday, the Studio City restaurant, just one block west of Coldwater Canyon, was the place where stars ate lunch while working at nearby Warner Bros. Studios and CBS Studio Center. The eatery was a place to see and be seen. Celebrities like Ronald Reagan, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Gene Autry and John Wayne were regulars. The Americana fare (heavy on the meats) was considered upscale and tasty at the time. A 1955 menu lists one of the most popular entrees, the Cock Pepper Steak, for $4.50; soup of the day went for 55 cents. But the Tail, as it was known, was above all a place to meet for cocktails. No matter the day, the martinis started flowing at 5 p.m. When developer Herbert M. Piken bought the property in the late ’80s and announced plans to building a shopping center, longtime employees were shattered. “I feel like there’s been a death in my family,” Justine Visone, a cocktail waitress at the restaurant for more than 10 years, told the Los Angeles Times. ■
