T
hough I enjoy a couple of vacations throughout the year, summer is the time when I take a deep breath and really relax. It is like I revert back to when I was a schoolgirl. It’s an almost euphoric feeling that classes are over and I won’t have any pressure— academic or peer— for several months. Point of fact: I don’t take three months off anymore—10 days is about it—save for a few three-day weekends. But for three full months, I still have that same delightfully giddy feeling of escape. Speaking of escapes, this issue offers more than a few. On the literal side, be sure to check out some fun ideas for family vacations on page 88. Closer to home—head up to the northeast corner of the Valley and hit Toluca Lake for a thoroughly engaging weekend outing. It is one of LA’s last remaining spots with a “Mayberry” vibe, but there are dozens of new eateries that have popped in the last several years, many of which are mentioned in the piece starting on page 26. On the figurative side, a couple of the articles in this issue feature great (reading) escapes. One of them is a profile of Trunkettes, the Valley-based swimwear company that nabbed the cover of this year’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. (Their bikini was worn by the plus-size model). Another good read and one that many homeowners will appreciate: the “how to” on transforming the yard of a traditional home into a colorful, texturized, drought-tolerant oasis (page 34). Psssst…. succulents aren’t just for contemporaries anymore. Finally, a big hats off to our 2016 valedictorians. This year we have more than 20 Valley schools represented in the “Valleydictorians” piece (page 51)—with graduates heading off to universities from Duke to Stanford. Congrats to the students … and their parents!

The Pet Shrink
Part therapist, part trainer, animal behaviorist Michael Steinberg has been getting into the minds of cats and dogs for more than 30 years. PHOTOGRAPHED BY TAMEKA
JACOBS
We are a nation of pet lovers. And that means we want our dogs and cats to be well-adjusted and happy. Enter pet shrink Michael Steinberg. With undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology, behavior analysis and behavior modification, the Sherman Oaks resident turned his expertise from people to pets. From nervous to downright dangerous behavior, Michael evaluates pets and, through training and general obedience sessions, offers effective resolutions. Here VB Editor-in-Chief Linda Grasso queries him on how he gets into the head of pets— and attempts to get some insight into her own two wacky dogs.
OK 10 minutes later. Simple example: it’s OK for your dog to jump on you but then expect them not to jump on guests. Treating your pet as a toy with no consistency is one of the worst things a pet owner can do.
So what are the most common problems you get a call for? Separation anxiety, especially exhibited by newlyadopted dogs. This can range from destructive behavior or barking incessantly to eliminating in the house. Second would be aggressive behavior toward people or other dogs. And third, housebreaking issues. Many of us treat our dogs like humans. Is that bad? Humans function best in a predictable and stable environment. Dogs thrive in an environment that is relatively predictable which includes consistent expectations. A behavior can’t be OK one minute and then not

How important is walking a dog? Exercise is important. The more an owner can walk their dog or otherwise provide other forms of physical or mental stimulation—doggie day care, agility training, hiking—the better. How much outside time does a dog need? Obviously, having to leave a dog alone eight or more hours a day is not good. This is especially true for puppies and young dogs. An older dog that has been raised this way can, in some cases, tolerate long absences. I suggest breaking up the day with dog day care, dog walkers or trusted friends. What are the most common mistakes pet owners make? Lack of consistency and family members not being on the same page—much like many of us do with our
children. Something may not be OK with mom but OK with dad. Not good!
some instances the dog will redirect the aggression to the owner.
What is the appropriate way to punish a pet? Use of positive reinforcement to teach appropriate behavior is the ideal, but life isn’t all positive reinforcement. Some behaviors need to be corrected by some form of negative reinforcement or punishment (except physical). Every dog responds differently to correction. The least aversive, if necessary, should always be the first choice.
What are the signs of a happy dog? Rear end moving back and forth, rear body raised and front lowered (play posture), mouth open with a sort of smile. You know it when you see it because it makes you smile.
Our dog Cal used to walk quietly on a leash. That all changed when we got a second dog, Bo. Now Cal starts barking like crazy when he sees another dog. Then Bo starts barking and then Cal mauls Bo. Is Cal trying to be the “alpha?” Not necessarily. It could be what’s called “redirected aggression.” Since Cal can’t get to the dog he sees, he redirects his frustration (aggression) to Bo. This is a major reason not to use a yoked leash where both dogs are attached to one leash. In
Signs of an unhappy dog? Head down, tail tucked, body lowered or on side or back, and avoidance of eye contact. Do dogs like to be around other dogs? Or is being with humans enough? Most dogs enjoy both other dogs and people. Although we all know those that don’t do well with other dogs for various reasons i.e., not socialized at a young age or having been attacked by another dog. Being around both is best, but a lot of dogs just enjoy their human family as their “pack.” l For more on Michael’s practice, go to pet-shrink.com

oluca Lake used to be known as the home of Bob Hope (priced at $12 million, his five-acre compound is on the market) and the location of the exclusive Lakeside Golf Club where you can see A-list celebs like Justin Timberlake and Adam Levine on the greens. But the enclave, which boasts a lake complete with ducks, fountains and boating, has undergone a fancy face-lift in recent years—and the rest of LA seems to be taking note. Situated on a 1.22-square-mile tract with proximity to four major studios, home prices are below those on the Westside—luring celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Steve Carell and Melissa McCarthy over the hill to buy property. Bob’s Big Boy and the Trader Joe’s used to be the only places you’d find a full parking lot, but a slew of exciting eateries have popped up along main drag Riverside Drive. Two restaurants, Sweetsalt (casual and small with tasty café fare) and Cascabel (gourmet Mexican tapas) were among the first to open their doors. Both are owned by Top Chef alum Alex Eusebio. More recently Foreman’s Tavern, owned
by the same folks behind Laurel Tavern, settled into the old Lucy’s spot. Foreman’s offers woodfired smoked meats and an expansive selection of whiskey. Other newcomers: Catcher in the Rye, a literary-themed craft cocktail bar and Aeirloom, an organic bakery. At the Rose and Sage boutique, Soraya, the owner, has a keen eye for stylish clothing and accessories that are mid-priced and attract moms as well as daughters. At the far corner of town (technically in Burbank but just over the line), the jam-packed, bright and airy Olive & Thyme will remind you of Joan’s On Third (fyi—they too have a killer short rib sandwich). Order from the list of farm-fresh salads and sandwiches or prepared food-to-go. Not everything is new. The diner Paty’s and Smoke House restaurant are longtime favorites among locals, Warner Bros. executives and celebrities. George Clooney stopped in to Smoke House so often when he was shooting the TV show ER that he named his company after the place. The eatery has been serving killer martinis and New York strip steaks (with the friendliest bartenders in the Valley) since 1946. l

Rising Star Valley native Nina Shallman is getting attention for her romantic voice and original songwriting. WRITTEN BY NICOLE

J
ohn Lennon’s “Dear Prudence” has been covered by many artists, but Nina Shallman, just 20 years old, somehow manages a fresh, unique spin on the song. In the rendering on her debut album last year, Nina’s clear distinct voice travels up and down the notes with ease, and slips organically from light to dark. Nina, who just completed her sophomore year at Amherst College in Massachusetts, grew up in Encino with dad, John, a well-known political consultant, stay-at-home-mom, Lani, and three siblings. With aunts and uncles who are jazz singers, songwriters, and musicians who work in the recording business, Nina was raised with music. “It’s a huge part of our family’s culture,” she says, adding that she learned harmony as child from the back seat of her parents’ car when they put on Beatles’ CDs. She also plays guitar and ukulele. During summers and school breaks the polished performer plays in venues around LA with a band that complements her lyrical, romantic style. Her warmth comes through in a calm confidence, and an obvious emotional connection with the lyrics makes her performances riveting. Her album was recorded in the studio of producer Andrew Williams, who has also produced Five For Fighting among others. The single “Never Years Old,” which she sang with Jacob Snider, can be viewed on YouTube, along with several other performance videos—all of which have attracted thousands of views. Part of the appeal seems to lie in the fact that she’s versatile—clearly in her comfort zone with pop and jazz as well as ‘60s folk-rock tunes. Nina also sings with an all-female student a cappella group at Amherst. “I learned the most about vocal strength and control from my a cappella group, “ she says. “My sound has gotten infinitely better.” The young singer reveres Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee, but topping her list of current favorites are Norah Jones and Adele. “Adele has an unbelievable voice that is almost otherworldly,” says Nina. The Campbell Hall graduate has written many of her own songs and was attracted to poetry almost as early as she was to singing. “One elementary school teacher, [at Westland School] named Jeff Martin, introduced me to poetry, and that set the stage for songwriting, which is the main medium for my artistic expression,” she adds. Keep track of this rising young local star at ninashallman.com—and look for her new EP late this summer.

Legal Eagles From courtroom to classroom, a lawyer-turned-teacher experiences the rewards of changing lives. WRITTEN BY JEANNE

hen Paul Landau started looking for a second career 15 years ago, teaching seemed a natural fit. Paul, a former entertainment lawyer who had been laid off in a studio downsizing, had always connected well with kids (he has two grown ones of his own, ages 22 and 27). After reading an article about lawyers who had transitioned into teaching, and tracking down several to hear their experiences, he decided to go for it. So in his late 40s, the Sherman Oaks resident earned a Master of Education from Pepperdine University and launched his second career. You can take the lawyer out of the courtroom but you can’t take the courtroom out of the lawyer. At his first teaching job at El Camino High School, Paul helped with mock trial, an extracurricular activity in which a team of high school students replicates a full-blown criminal trial in competition against students from other schools. Paul was so enamored of the exercise (sponsored nationally by the Constitutional Rights Foundation) that he volunteered to develop a mock trial program at North Hollywood High School. In its very first year, 2004, NoHo’s team placed in the top 16 in the county. Today Paul, who was ultimately hired full-time to teach AP U.S. history and government, still presides over the school’s mock trial program, which has racked up an impressive number of wins. He also launched and coaches the school’s Duke University Moot Court program in which students argue both sides of a hypothetical Supreme Court case in a national competition held in North Carolina. For six years running, NoHo has had more teams in the competition than any other school, and the school has taken home the first-place trophy twice. The NoHo team has also earned two second-place county wins. Named “Mock Trial Teacher of the Year” for LA County in 2008—the fastest ascent to this title of any teacher in the county’s history— Paul tackles both programs with unrelenting enthusiasm. “It’s gratifying to have helped students find

O’DONNELL
a passion in high school that both serves and puts them on a path to deciding what they want to do with their lives,” says Paul. “But it also gives them incredible confidence in advocating and verbalizing very difficult concepts and makes them more confident individuals when they get to college and beyond.” Indeed, of more than 300 students who have participated in mock trial and moot court, five have gone on to become lawyers. And two mock trial students from last season are starting Columbia and NYU law schools, respectively, in the fall. Paul shares credit for the programs’ successes with a brain trust of 15 local lawyers and judges (referred to as the “Executive Board”) as well as parents. “We approach it from the standpoint that the students can do anything and they can be excellent attorneys, so we expect a high level of performance,” says Deputy City Attorney Vivienne Swanigan Crenshaw, who started working as Paul’s number two when her son was on the mock trial team seven years ago, and never stopped. Everyone seems to agree, however, that Paul is the critical link. “His legal training is a big plus, but it’s the devotion to his students that I think is one of the key ingredients,” says volunteer David Ettinger, an appellate attorney and partner in the Encino firm of Horvitz & Levy. “He spends so much extra time on these programs. He’s deeply committed always, and he’s so proud of his students.” These sentiments are echoed throughout the corridors of North Hollywood High. Principal Ricardo Rosales shares, “Paul has a great passion for transferring his legal knowledge to students.” Though competitive by nature, Paul can have a gentle touch when necessary. And his students, who tend to push themselves academically by juggling multiple AP and honor classes, find that endearing—not to mention freeing. “Mr. Landau is excited for your victories but not upset if you don’t win,” says Mila Herko Frank, who is headed to Kenyon College in the fall. Indeed, like any good lawyer, Paul keeps the big picture in mind.

Low Water High Style A tandem effort transitions a traditional home from grass to succulents.
KM: The orange pots keep the eye moving through the yard. Being unafraid of color and using it judiciously can make a space dynamic without being overbearing.
KM: The oblong pots were a creation of mine. I wanted to bring succulent arrangements, typically done in a wide, low pot, up higher. So I developed plinths by turning tapered, cylindrical pots upside down and painting them to match.
W
ith their structural form and minimalist, clean design, succulents have always been a popular choice for contemporary homes. But more and more often the lawns of traditionals are being swapped out for succulents. The catalyst for Margee Friend, who lives in Sherman Oaks, was building an outdoor living area with a BBQ, fire pit and seating area. “Originally we were thinking of keeping some of the grass, but with the water situation, we decided it made sense to go all drought-tolerant.” She hired Valley-based landscape designer Sarina Klemes of Danison Designs to do the yard and Katerina Morris of No Water, No Cry to do the pots. Here Sarina and Katerina elaborate on how they achieved the stunning results.

SK: The drought-tolerant Palo Verde trees hide the basketball court from view, add color and fullness, and grow really fast. When not in bloom they still have a delicate, wispy beauty with green trunks, branches and leaves.
SK: Cordylines australis ‘Pink Stripe’ add color which excites the eye. They are a beautiful accent to the blueish-green groundcover and yellow Palo Verde trees.
KATERINA’S POTTING PICKS Agave Americana var. ‘alba’ The green and yellow spears offer strong, vertical lines. Portulacaria Afra (“Elephant’s Food”) With dark stems and small green leaves, it sprays outward. Nice contrast with the more vertical Agave. SK: Senecio mandraliscae covers a large area really fast and doesn’t require a lot of water or maintenance. It gives a lot of bang for the buck.
SK: The pavers with the river rock provide transition and help introduce the garden. They also serve as a path from the pool area to the different destination spots in the back.

Aeonium Arboretum var. ‘atropurpureum’ With almost black leaves and a green center, it provides great contrast. Crassula Ovata (“Hummel’s Sunset”) Round lobes that are red-tipped and seem to almost vibrate. Senecio var. ‘mandraliscae’ Reflects the blue/green groundcover in the garden. Sedum Morganianum (“Burro’s Tail”) Evocative of a bunch of grapes, it softens and breaks the hard lines at the edge of the pot.

Mamma Mia! Three pizza chefs on how to achieve the ultimate crust WRITTEN BY
DIANE HAITHMAN ILLUSTRATIED BY

o matter what your signature dish, summer seems to bring out the Julia Child in all of us. Even if you’re afraid the gas grill will set your eyebrows on fire and you’ve been using your ice cream maker as a planter since ‘95, summer picnics and parties make us want to experiment and up our game. And what could be more fun than pizza? It’s pretty easy to create something that fits the definition of pizza: dough with tomato sauce, cheese and toppings. But anyone who’s ever made a pie from scratch knows it’s never as good as that crusty slice from the pizzeria down the street. For a little insight, we queried a few experts like Richard Florczak, author of The Private Chef Cookbook. He has served as private chef for Mel Gibson and Leonardo DiCaprio but gave it all up last summer to open Flame Pizzeria in Reseda. The New Jersey native, “where pizza is a religion,” says his secret is to use Caputo 00 flour from Naples, which is carried by most Italian markets. He is also a big fan of

using filtered water and sea salt. Chef Doc Lawrence points to technique rather than ingredients when it comes to his crust. He serves an eclectic menu at Riverside in Toluca Lake, but everyone raves about the pizza—particularly its crust. Doc describes his pizza as Neapolitan but his cracker-crisp crust is a different animal from Flame’s hearty, chewy variety. He suggests baking the crust for a few minutes, both top and bottom, before adding

sauce or toppings. He swears that pre-baking “will give you cracklin’ crust even with a kitchen oven and dough from Trader Joe’s.” For 10 years, Chef Angelino Di Santo has delighted customers at Angelino Pizzeria in North Hollywood with his version of a thincrust Roma-style pie. To achieve the perfect texture, Angelo shares advice from mother-in-law Gina: Let the dough rise six to eight hours. “The more it rises, the crispier it gets.” As the perfect
complement, he prefers mozzarella di bufala, made from Italian buffalo milk, which carries double the fat content of cow milk mozzarella. For serious pizza fans, if you are willing to make the investment ($2,000-$5,000) mobile or wood-fired ovens go a long way in creating a perfectly-baked crust but as these culinary talents are quick to point out, they aren’t a necessity; sometimes simplicity yields perfection. l

Sweet Relief From clove- and vanilla-infused black tea to iced matcha with whipped cream, beverages get cold and creative for summer. WRITTEN BY JOSHUA
LURIE
A
fter June gloom lifts and a hot blanket settles on the San Fernando Valley, we start looking for ways to refresh and stay cool. Three local businesses— all of which opened doors in the past year and a half—have concocted cold, refreshing beverages that will all be available even after the autumnal equinox. MILKING IT Adrienne Nicole Borlongan, a food scientist and cocktail pro, teams with attorney JP Lopez at Wanderlust Creamery. The duo’s Tarzana micro-dairy produces some of LA’s best ice cream in flavors inspired by their travels. Think pretzel + rubbraou (Iceland) and tiramisu (Italy). Wanderlust also serves signature beverages that incorporate nitrogen (like Guinness) resulting in frothy, cascading versions of cold brew coffee, matcha green tea, and even better, nitro Thai iced tea. This isn’t typical Thai iced tea. Wanderlust skips condensed milk altogether and infuses Ceylon black tea with clove, star anise and vanilla pods. Each judiciously sweetened drink is available with vanilla-flecked, sea salt whipped cream using premium Straus whole milk, which adds a welcome savory note and rises to the surface, yielding decorative streaks. Wanderlust Creamery 18511 Ventura Blvd., Tarzana,
CORNFLAKE CONCOCTIONS McConnell’s, the Santa Barbara dairy and ice cream company that dates back to 1949, has big designs on LA. Owners Michael Palmer and chef/wife Eva Ein took over the company in 2012 and kicked off with a shop in downtown’s Grand Central Market. Next they debuted on Studio City’s Ventura Place, installing a vintage photo mural of the neighborhood. The shop doesn’t serve breakfast, but any kid (or former kid) will appreciate their “breakfast of champions.” This tantalizing milkshake is available by the pound (or the “½ pounder”) and combines luxurious, sweet cream ice cream with cornflake-steeped milk, crunchy cornflakes and a generous whipped cream cap. McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams 12073 Ventura Pl., Studio City
HOLEY MOLY! To start 2015, Osaka natives Mitsu Kagei and Aya Maeda debuted RING Baked Tofu Donuts at the base of a Canoga Park office building near Westfield Topanga mall. RING’s springy donuts incorporate local Meiji tofu and rice flour, and come in untraditional flavors like Earl Grey and soy sauce. That creativity extends to RING’s iced beverages, which include chocolate, matcha, iced coffee, and when in season, cinnamon and pumpkin spice. Their iced matcha is especially good—with sweetened green tea powder, salted whipped cream and a sprinkling of extra matcha. Remember to mix it up to blend the flavors. Perfect Patios Three inspired choices for dining alfresco
IN THE MOOD The charming patio at The Front Yard restaurant at The Garland.
EL TEJANO Tex-Mex is the theme for the new restaurant that is scheduled to open up in July in the old Bow & Truss spot. The best news: the Texan-size 2,000-square-foot decomposed granite outdoor patio remains intact. Sip one of El Tejano’s margaritas or a “Frozen Beerita” at the open-air bar and then settle into an umbrella-topped table for tacos, Frito pie and chili con carne. El Tejano comes from the team behind The Federal and Big Wangs—also in NoHo—and Tipsy Cow in Sherman Oaks.
VITELLO’S Having a quiet alfresco dinner in the heart of bustling Studio City sounds like a stretch, but Vitello’s makes it possible. Situated in quaint Tujunga Village, the Italian eatery (just voted one of the 100 “hottest restaurants in America” by Open Table) created a generous patio that stretches onto the sidewalk, during a renovation a few years ago. While nibbling on tiramisu (worth every calorie—trust us), enjoy crooning from the delightful Angela Parrish, at the piano Wednesday through Sunday evenings.
THE FRONT YARD With seating that includes cushioned, cozy lounge areas, the spacious patio at The Front Yard is the kind of place where you can spend an entire evening. Set back off Vineland, nestled on the grounds of The Garland, it feels quiet, intimate and kicked back; a resort-like atmosphere that is rarely found in the Valley. Order a full meal or share small plates (the tuna tartare tacos are our personal favorite) on the patio area. Happy hour runs from 4 to 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to closing, seven days a week.

In the words of Nelson Mandela, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’ And each one of us sitting here has the power to change the world. Campbell Hall Episcopal University of Pennsylvania “The good memories from freshman year were, uh, numbered. I remember our first spirit chapel. We were dressed in the leftover color nobody wanted: bright, seen-from-across-the-street yellow. Let’s disregard the rest of that year. 12th grade. Senior year. Since elementary school, the senior patio was always sacred space; sneaking past that old darkroom into the patio was forbidden. So the first day of senior year is one that I’m sure most of us couldn’t forget. With our super-stylish “Seniors 2016” polos, we took our spot on that equally stylish patio, finally rulers of the school. Big things happened this year. College of course, but also the events that naturally come with our last year of high school. Our final color wars: this time we stormed the court and we wore blue while the yellows watched from the top.”

“The world’s lack of order is terrifying to the core, and I think that I speak for more than just me when I say that venturing into the unknown is one of the most daunting prospects imaginable. However, life is not fiction, and that’s a good thing. Maybe the excitement is seeing where the journey takes you, and knowing that it’s not all planned out and doesn’t have to (and won’t) be perfect.”

We are not the likes on our latest post, not are we the line drives in the dust. We are the honesty and humbleness that came before those moments and the egotism and pride that followed. I told myself I wouldn’t incorporate the generic inspirational quote into my speech, but I think there is one familiar adage that remains applicable and that we should hear one last time. What we are to be, we are now becoming. Though we will not be hearing the enthusiastically-spoken saying every single morning anymore as we half consciously take our seats in class and begin the day, it will still hold significance in describing our developing lives. Over the past four years, our friends, family, and teachers have prompted and aided our transformations into not only maturing adults, but also citizens of the world.”

“We are told to fear the world. We see it written in the newspapers, proclaimed by the media and reinforced by our politicians, but the truth is that there really is no outside world. The world as we know it is just a collection of individuals. Let’s tap into our inner goodness and share it as a collective force. It’s all about consciousness. As young leaders, we are tasked with becoming global citizens together on this planet, so let’s mobilize that force and share it wherever we go. It’s time to lead.”

Valley-based Trunkettes scores the prestigious cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue, putting the swimwear company in the national spotlight and boosting sales beyond one Encino mom’s wildest dreams. WRITTEN BY SUSAN

here was excitement in the air for Hilary Genga and her husband, John, when they parked themselves in front of the TV the Saturday night before Valentine’s Day. The Encino couple were hoping to catch a glimpse of Hilary’s designs on the first-ever televised reveal of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue airing on TNT. Hilary, creator and owner of Trunkettes, a boutique swimsuit company, was aware two of her suits had made the cut—selected from some 30,000 submissions for inclusion in the magazine. “They email you a tiny little picture of the suits without the models’ faces to keep that under wraps,” says Hilary, who’s had six suits featured in previous issues. Minutes before the show’s credits rolled, SI made history unveiling Ashley Graham as the first plus-size model ever to grace its cover and—much to the couple’s surprise—she was wearing a Trunkettes purple and gold bikini. “I screamed, cried and laughed all at the same time, then immediately called my kids who were spending the night with friends,” she recalls. Son Jacob, 15, and daughter, Emery, 13, who attend Harvard-Westlake School, were quick to take credit for the coup, even though they almost inadvertently persuaded their mom not to send the winning purple and gold number in that last of several packages shipped to SI throughout the year. “I showed it to my kids and they said the colors reminded them of the Lakers,” says Hilary. Not exactly the look she was going for, she considered pulling the bikini, then decided “what the hell” and mailed it anyway. Hilary’s instinct, like her drive and business savvy, proved dead-on. Since scoring SI’s cover, Trunkettes’

online sales have tripled, the entire summer 2016 line is sold out, and retailers are clamoring for a chance to see next year’s offerings, which will debut at Swim Show, an international convention held later this month in Miami. Currently Trunkettes items are available in over a hundred retail stores, the biggest outlets being resort and hotel boutiques, such as MGM Resorts International, Harrah’s, and Lumiere Place Casino and Hotels. Thanks to SI, the company is also hoping to soon close its first deal with a national department store chain. Ironically it was soccer moms, not supermodels, who initially inspired Hilary to launch Trunkettes eight years ago. “When my kids were little we’d go to all these swim parties and I looked around and realized that all the dads were in the pool having fun, but none of the moms were because they didn’t want to put on a bathing suit,” she explains. Hilary herself found comfort pairing her husband’s swim trunks with a bikini top. “I could dive and swim without having to worry about a wardrobe malfunction or whether I’d gotten a bikini wax,” she says. A former theater producer with zero interest in the fashion business, Hilary kept searching stores for a legitimate swim trunk/bikini ensemble made for women, but never found one. “Basically, there were two types of suits for women,” she says, “skimpy ones that were cute and frumpy ones that weren’t.” She mentioned the trunks idea to her kids’ babysitter at the time, Kristin Evenson, who happened to be a recent fashion school graduate. The sitter sketched some designs and the pair were off and running. In addition to providing more coverage, Trunkettes added functionality with tops that include built-in bras with adjustable straps; trunks come with built-in briefs. The brand has continued to evolve

since its 2008 launch in a spare office in Hilary’s husband’s Encino law practice. Nowadays, Hilary and Vice President, Tashia McIntosh, who started as a swimsuit model for the company eight years ago, preside over the Trunkettes empire in a 2,000-square-foot showroom in Reseda. (Kristin Evenson left the company to be a full-time mom.) Hilary continues to oversee all aspects of the company—from design to sales. She also receives advice from Shark Tank mentor and clothing mogul, Daymond John. After coming close but not making it onto Shark Tank, Hilary sought out John’s help and the two have met a half dozen times. Trunkettes has expanded its line to include cover-ups, and along the way has amassed a number of celebrity fans like Carrie Underwood and Julie Bowen. For 2017, Trunkettes will offer three lines: its original conservative-ish cuts, a neon collection for younger customers and an upscale “glam” line—each with eight to 10 pieces. “No matter how tiny the bikini top though,” assures Hilary, “we’ll always have at least two styles of trunks to go with every top. That’s what makes us different.”

here are some homes you walk into and can just feel the history. An English Tudor revival in Toluca Lake, built in 1938 by acclaimed architect Paul Williams, is one of them. The estate was constructed for screenwriter Gladys Lehman (Shirley Temple’s Poor Little Rich Girl), one of the founders of the Screenwriters Guild. It was featured in Architectural Digest twice, in 1937 and again in 1982, when Happy Days actor Henry Winkler owned it. It also appears in Paul R. Williams: Classic Hollywood Style, a coffee-table book by the architect’s granddaughter, Karen E. Hudson. The estate, which has been owned for the past 22 years by Robert and Vana Farina, features Paul Williams’ classic style— formality and high glam. Included in just over 7,000 square feet: a grand entry, intricate molding, custom wall inlays, curved walls and staircase, extensive wood paneling, beamed ceilings, and butler’s pantry. The winding staircase leads to the master suite, featuring a private balcony. Three other bedrooms are also on the second story. Also reflecting Williams’ classic style is a “great room” that faces the backyard—and in this case—a view of the fountain-adorned lake complete with a gazebo and a dock. “The den,” as Robert calls it, has a ceiling built with wood from England and two hidden panels reveal secret areas. One of them, a panel by the fireplace, pushes open to a narrow hallway that leads out to the carport. “It was apparently so mistresses could sneak out when the wife gets home,” Robert, a retired marketing executive, chuckles. “The den is dark and sexy. When you are in here you can just feel that there was some great partying that went on back in the day,” adds Robert. “Bob Wian, founder of the Bob’s Big Boy chain, met his wife, June, right over there at that bar and after proposing, Bob bought the estate for her.” The Farinas also enjoy hanging out at the bar with friends. “We love to entertain. People play pool, sit at the bar or at one of the other areas. I remember when Vana told me what she and the designer had in mind with the built-in bar stools [in the nooks] by the pool table, I thought ‘No way.’ But it totally worked.”

GAME ON Clockwise from top: The Farinas spend a lot of time in their den, with its built-in seating banquettes; the exquisite woodwork that is a Paul Williams hallmark; an antique radio that Robert inherited from his family and restored.

A MOMENT IN TIME Clockwise from top: The living room features Williams’ signature molding and fireplace. A bronze by sculptor Frederick Hart is situated behind the piano; the dining room, which did not have doors when the Farinas bought the house. “That just didn’t feel right. You just know Williams designed it with doors,” says Robert. The couple added etched-glass barn doors copied from panels Robert had seen at the Wynn Hotel bar in Macau; a marble turtleneck purchased in Florence rests atop books in the foyer.

THE VIEW FROM HERE Robert and Vana enjoy a glass of wine in the gazebo near the private dock. Robert says the lake was a huge hit with their now grown son and daughter. “They used to go out there all the time to catch bass and trout,” Robert recalls.
Robert, an avid art collector, displays framed images from photographers, including Michael Kenna and Abelardo Morell throughout the house. One particular riveting piece of art: a bronze behind the piano in the living room by sculptor Frederick Hart. “He has a sculpture on display on the west face of the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.,” shares Robert. The couple also own a home in Lucca, Italy. Now that their daughter, a professional photographer, is living in Italy (their son, a TV writer, lives in LA), they’re planning on spending more time there. Vana is currently a commuter student at Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence. She hopes to eventually transfer to Lorenzo de Medici School to complete her B.A. in art history. “My daughter attended both of these schools, so I am what I call ‘reverse legacy’!” she laughs. Right now the Toluca Lake estate is listed for rent by Craig Knizek at The Agency Real Estate. But Robert does not see a sale in the cards. “Oh no,” he says with a slight wince. “It is a really special property. I’d like to keep it.”

Island Enchantment WHERE: Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Oahu, Hawaii WHY: Whether Disney fan or Hawaii enthusiast, this spacious resort on the quiet Western end of Oahu provides the perfect mix of playtime and paradise for all ages. HOW: Many major airlines offer direct flights to Oahu year-round, including Virgin Air, which recently debuted service to Honolulu. From the island capital it’s about 20 miles to the resort by car or shuttle. 866-4434763, resorts.disney.go.com/aulani-hawaii-resort WHEN: Non-school vacation months like September, October, January and February are typically less crowded. The annual Honolulu Food & Wine Festival is in October, with many top chefs and foodies descending on the resort. WHAT: If you’re worried a trip to Aulani will be one character breakfast after another, don’t fear. Entertainment and ambience are Disney staples, and this piece of tropical paradise is no exception. Are you likely to run into Mickey and Minnie in Hawaiian shirts? Yes. Should you expect the kid quotient to be overwhelming? No—just a sprinkling of pixie dust here and there. Accomodations range from standard rooms to three-bedroom villas. Dining is also diverse and delicious, with many local specialties blended with family fare as well as fine dining options. There is also a shaved ice stand, snack shop, pool bar and that famous Dole Whip for Disney diehards. The resort is built around a giant aquatic zone full of pools, waterslides and snorkeling reef. If the Pacific is more your style, you can walk your gear to sandy white beaches on the Ko Olina Lagoon. For a break from outdoor activities, visit the Laniwai spa to enjoy pampering and polishing.

Desert Comeback WHERE: The Ritz-Carlton in Rancho Mirage WHY: A dramatic 2014 remodel to the property puts this celebrated hotel back on top with gorgeous panoramic desert views. HOW: An easy two-hour drive from the Valley via the 10 Freeway, beyond Palm Springs. 760-321-8282, ritzcarlton.com/en/hotels/california/rancho-mirage WHEN: Steer clear of the hot months from June through September. Things start to average out in the fall and stay lovely through spring. Beware of the weeks around Easter and spring break—also the time of Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals. Things get a bit hectic and pricey in all the desert towns. WHAT: The hotel is now much less Gerald Ford and more Tom Ford following the seven-year-long redux. Sleek, modern and unfussy, the new design lets the sweeping desert vista take center stage. With two pools and plenty of places to lounge, the milder months draw the sun worshippers. For those in need of a heat retreat, the spa calls with beautifullyappointed lounges, treatment rooms and a lush menu of services. Kids can take nature hikes and roast s’mores on the private first-floor fire pits. There are two notable dining venues: State Fare Bar + Kitchen and The Edge Steakhouse. While the former is terrific for family meals, The Edge is an exceptional culinary experience for mom and dad or couples.

HOW: Both Delta and United offer direct service to Boise, about a three-hour drive to Sun Valley. 800-786-8259, sunvalley.com WHAT: Once a preferred spot for the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, the iconic, 108-room Sun Valley Lodge has undergone a major renovation with upgrades including expanded guestrooms—some with dual-sided fireplaces—and bathrooms with walk-in showers and bathtubs. Rooms feature flat-screen TVs, crisp white linens, writing desks, and Keurig coffee and tea makers. (Ernest Hemingway penned part of For Whom the Bell Tolls in the office of the Hemingway Suite.)

Or book a walking tour of Ketchum with husband-and-wife duo Jim and Wendy Jaquet (wendyjaquet@yahoo. com) and explore history, art galleries and the Sun Valley Museum of History (comlib.org). From Trail Creek Cabin—a rustic, log cabin-gone-restaurant accessible via a horse-drawn sleigh ride—to an Austrian-inspired bakery recalling a ski chalet, there are plenty of restaurant options around town. Start early with a hearty breakfast at Gretchen’s at the Sun Valley Lodge. The recently revamped eatery serves everything from “Power Bowls” with quinoa, edamame and baby kale to a bread pudding-style French toast, drizzled with walnuts and brown sugar. THE PLASTIC SURGERY INSTITUTE OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Edward Terino, MD, FACS Cosmetic Surgeon
28047 Dorothy Drive, Agoura Hills 818-991-6226 terinomd.com
D
r. Edward Terino, owner and medical director of The Plastic Surgery Institute of Southern California, provides aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery and nonsurgical procedures. He graduated cum laude from medical school at Yale University and became board-certified in general surgery, which he taught as associate professor while acquiring plastic surgery training at the Universities of North Carolina and Florida.
How do you distinguish yourself from the competition?
“By my extensive experience. Experience is the best teacher. Also because of my Godgiven gift of having creative-artistic talents and being able to bring them to the operating table. Everything in the beauty industry is an art form. To create beauty is to improve the quality of life for our patients. True, inborn artistic talent is not easy to find, and it is even more difficult if not impossible to teach, except to a limited extent. Another distinguishing quality is my perception that faces are three-dimensional, and therefore our surgery must be focused on improving threedimensional volume aspects of the nose, cheeks, chin and jaw line. I am also historically the leading pioneer in the legalizing research of biochemical ‘fillers’ that can be utilized with injections through the skin to fill volume deficiencies in the face from birth or aging.”
What is your area of specialty?
“My pioneering and unique invention and development of government-patented anatomic design 3-D facial contouring implants, as well as my initiating the field of 3-D facial fillers, have created for me a reputation locally nationally and internationally as THE specialist in that field. However with my artistic interest in plastic surgery, I totally enjoy performing all procedures both reconstructive and cosmetic and in all areas of the body.”

VENTURA BLVD, JULY 2016
Tell us a few of your work accomplishments. “For two years I was given the honor of being ‘traveling professor’ for the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and delegated to go abroad to teach surgeons in other countries.More recently, I was also named Best Plastic Surgeon of the year by the readers of Ventura County Star, Thousand Oaks Chronicle, Los Angeles Daily News (2013 & 2014) and Conejo Valley Happening (2015). I have taught in the departments of plastic surgery at the following universities: Yale, North Carolina, Florida, UCLA, USC and Stamford. And I taught in Rome as one of three American plastic surgeons chosen for the Pope’s Jubilaeum celebration in 2001.”
FAST FACT Dr. Terino has written two textbooks on facial contouring and has contributed 35 book chapters to other authors’ textbooks on plastic surgery.
Tell us about your office staff.
“Our office staff aims to please in every way. From the moment patients walk in the door, my team knows that their time is just as valuable as our time. They are very experienced in the field of beauty and cosmetic surgery. The office is designed to have a nonmedical, cozy, homey atmosphere.”
How does having a strong relationship with you benefit your patients?
“My entire life has revolved around having strong, positive and meaningful relationships with people. That is why I decided to enjoy a private practice in lovely communities as opposed to the colder, distant relationships that MDs who work in universities, hospitals and clinics seem to have. A strong relationship creates trust, which in turn magically creates better results from their cosmetic proce-
dures. I get the highest degree of personal satisfaction out of my work and often make lasting personal friendships with my patients.”
What advice do you give for preventing illness?
“Even in my first year of medical school, I observed that people’s illnesses seem to be aggravated and even caused somehow by the patients’ patterns, habits of lifestyle and
S P E C I A L A DV E RT I S I N G S E CT I O N
their mental health. I spent a great deal of my life investigating the causes of health and happiness and concluded that the only way to embrace wellness and happiness are to practice good nutrition and exercise. And the most important factor of all is to follow the teachings that have come from the great spiritual leaders of our human civilization.”
S P E C I A L A DV E RT I S I N G S E CT I O N
How do you give back to your community?
“I donate a tremendous amount of my time and money to church organizations spread throughout the world, helping with mental illness and eliminating drugs, crime and war. I served on the board of directors of the Interplast organization, founded to perform operations on children with birth deformi-
ties in underdeveloped countries all over the world. I have volunteered my services to Childhelp, founded in Southern California to assist abused, battered children and was awarded “ Humanitarian of the year” in 1985. I have 20 plus missions to Central and South American countries, as well as 10 of my own personal mission trips to Haiti.

T
he Couture Smiles Dental Group provides comprehensive general dentistry, bringing multispecialty experts with years of combined experience under one roof. Owner Dr. Armen Terteryan, along with periodontist Dr. Jonathan Gordon, endodontist Dr. Sean Fahid and Dr. Gabriela Dimitrakopoulos—serve patients in Woodland Hills, Calabasas, West Hills, Agoura Hills and the surrounding area but regularly see patients from as far as Palm Desert. Dr. Terteryan also treats many of his colleagues in the surrounding area. His highly trained team of professionals utilize modern technology, materials and techniques with a special emphasis on comfort to make the dreaded visit to the dentist’s office more painless and pleasant than ever before.
How does having a strong relationship with you benefit your patients?
“We make it a point to understand and know our patients’ likes and dislikes, comforts and fears. We develop such a strong relationship and bond of trust that it allows us to customize and navigate treatments designed for each particular individual.”
In what ways does the technology you use enhance your patients’ experience at your office?
“Our deep understanding and application of cutting-edge technologies provides us a foundation to apply a multitude of treatment options. This allows us to restore patients’ teeth in such a way that it feels natural to that patient and minimizes discomfort.”
What are your areas of specialty?
“Luckily, in our office, we are a multi-specialty group that operates as a team. We have a periodontist who specializes in the treatment of gum

disease, bone disease and implants. We have an endodontist who specializes in root canals, and I do a lot of restorations, cosmetic treatments and general dentistry.”
How do you help your patients feel comfortable having honest conversations with you?
“First and foremost, I am very direct and honest. I have a calm demeanor at the same time, so patients immediately feel very comfortable in opening up about their fears, their past treatments, what they want and what they need. Ultimately, I have a unique ability to peel back the layers and really get to know the patient so we develop trust. This is really the most important factor.”
FAST FACT Owner Dr. Armen Terteryan earned his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees from University of Southern California and has been practicing for 13 years.
Tell us about sedation dentistry.
“For those who feel nervous or afraid of visiting the dentist or anxious about complex treatments that involve multiple appointments, we offer sedation dentistry so patients can receive all of the care they need in just one appointment with no fear or anxiety. Sedation dentistry is a good option for patients who suffer from dental anxiety, gag easily, are mentally or physically disabled, or would like to accomplish a lot of dental work in fewer visits. We will help you determine which form of sedation dentistry is best for your specific needs. If you have been avoiding the dentist because of dental phobia, now is the time to visit us and receive the care you need
while staying calm and comfortable.”
What advice do you give for preventing illness?
“First, maintain good oral hygiene. Secondly, if an issue arises, take care of it immediately. Seriously. Ignoring a problem will never make it go away. It only gets worse. By identifying and addressing an issue early, it is far more simple for the patient and for the doctor.”
How do you distinguish yourself from the competition?
“What has distinguished my practice from that of my contemporaries is derived from the authentic relationships I develop with my patients. It is how well I get to know my patients and how well they get to know me. It all boils down to creating and maintaining a deep sense of trust that goes both ways.”
Tell us something unique about your business.
“Hands down, I would have to say it is my crew, my team. This staff of mine is top-notch, very positive, very optimistic. It is just a great group of people where everyone is always smiling and laughing. The minute someone walks in the door, they can sense the energy and feel the warmth. We like to enjoy ourselves, and it gets comedic at times. The laughter is contagious.”
How do you give back to your community? “One of the more recent projects I am involved with is a free clinic in the San Fernando Valley, where a group of dentists provide the highest level of dental care for those who don’t have the means to access it. It is so rewarding. I sit on the board of directors for The Cancer Care Network, and I find pleasure in donating resources to the athletic departments of local high schools.”

L
A Orthopedics treats most orthopedic problems, including sports, personal and occupational injuries. Led by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Shahab Mahboubian, the practice also provides cosmetic height lengthening, joint replacement surgery and treatment for lower extremity deformities such as bowlegs and knock-knees.
Tell us about your background.
“I completed my training in limb lengthening and deformity correction surgery at the world-renowned Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Along with general orthopedics, some of the specialized surgical techniques I perform include correction of bow-legs and knock-knees, and leg-length discrepancies. Cosmetic limb lengthening, however, seems to be the most talked about surgery that I perform among my patients.”
In which ways do you provide your patients easy-to-understand information about their condition?
“We provide our patients with adequate time and real-life illustrations so they can properly understand the severity of their condition. Usually a conservative care approach is initiated for the injury or condition before deciding on the need for surgery. Most patients have a fear of surgery, and we understand that it should be left as a last option.”
What is your area of specialty?
“Working on the human body and helping those with musculoskeletal injuries was always a passion of mine since a very young age. Learning about making people taller and correcting their deformities came toward the end of my orthopedic residency, and I found it fascinating. In the past few years we have been able to not only make people taller or walk normally, but we have raised our patients’ confidence and helped them achieve their lifelong goals.”
S P E C I A L A DV E RT I S I N G S E CT I O N
What advice do you give for preventing major injuries?
“If you sustain a minor injury, rest and ice it down for a couple of days to allow the swelling to go down. Once the swelling has gone down but you are still in pain, come in for an evaluation. If you decide to ‘work it out’ or ignore it, your injury can become worse and lead to further and longer treatments, including possible surgery. We try to always treat minor problems with conservative care, such as physical therapy and proper exercises. If your symptoms do not improve, then we will discuss the possibility of undergoing surgery.”
How do you distinguish yourself from the competition?
“I have been fortunate enough to learn from some of the best surgeons in the country, and I keep myself updated on all the latest techniques in orthopedic surgery. Using minimally invasive procedures with my drive for perfection and being very meticulous during surgeries sets me apart from other surgeons.”
What’s the fascination about being taller?
“60% of CEOs in the top companies in America are 6 feet and taller. People who are taller have higher salaries than most, more confidence and enjoy better relationships. It’s no wonder that we get many inquiries about the height lengthening procedure.”
FAST FACT Dr. Mahboubian completed his training in limb lengthening and deformity correction surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

r. Greg S. Khounganian is board-certified in orthopedic surgery with fellowship training in spine surgery and an emphasis in minimally invasive surgical techniques. He provides evaluations of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine disorders and treats surgical and nonsurgical problems.
What is your area of specialty?
GSK SPINE Greg S. Khounganian, MD Spine Surgeon 5525 Etiwanda Ave. #311, Tarzana 818-343-4430 GSKspine.com
“Minimally invasive spine surgery with an emphasis on providing the least invasive approach to treatment of a patient’s spinal disorder.”
FAST FACT Dr. Khounganian started his private practice, GSK Spine, in Tarzana, where he was born and raised.
Tell us about your practice.
“I perform cervical and lumbar discectomy and decompression, cervical and lumbar fusions, and disc replacements—often with smaller incisions, sometimes with Band-aid-sized incisions and often on an outpatient basis. We also welcome second opinions regarding surgical recommendations, and we perform complex revision spine surgery.”
What concern do you frequently hear from patients? “Most often patients are concerned about postoperative downtime from work and activities. With the less invasive approaches, I am often able to perform surgery and have patients go home the same day. This allows them to recover in the comfort of their own home and reduces the chance of hospital-acquired infections. This also helps patients recover sooner and eventually get back to work and activities faster.”
In which ways do you provide your patients easyto-understand information about their condition? “I personally examine and evaluate patients. After the visit we provide take-home information to explain their condition and the recommendations I have prescribed.”
How do you maintain your own health?
“I am very much involved in my own physical fitness. This has given me a better understanding of the ways injury and pain affect patients—especially since I have experienced many of those same problems and had to deal with rehab and recovery as well.”
How do you give back to your community?
“I started my practice in Tarzana because I wanted to give back to the community I grew up in. I try to give back not only by being their doctor but also with community lectures to educate them on new advancements in spine care. Most people are very anxious when it comes to back problems and spine surgery. I try to relieve them of those fears through education for a better understanding of what options they have for preventative care and treatment.”

How do you work with other health care professionals to care for your patients?
“Our office is constantly in contact with other dental and medical health care professionals to make sure each patient’s care is carefully coordinated. Our doctors will personally reach out to their colleagues to discuss treatment in detail and come up with the best scenario for the patient.”
To what do you attribute your practice’s growth?
“Our referring dentists recognize that their patients will get not only the best surgical results in our office but also superior service. Furthermore many of our patients are so
pleased with their experience that they refer their family members and friends to us. In addition we sponsor multiple continuing education seminars throughout the year for our referring doctors, thus allowing them to keep up with the latest in dentistry and practice management. All of our positive online reviews have also had an impact on patients.”
How should patients care for dental implants?
“Replacing lost teeth with dental implants is a significant step in restoring health and function to your dentition and your jaws. The final product feels and functions like a natural tooth, which means that an implant-crown unit needs to be maintained just like a tooth. Brushing and flossing daily as well as regular professional cleanings are paramount when it comes to preventing gum disease and bone loss around implants. If maintained properly, dental implants can last for decades.”

GLASER PAIN RELIEF CENTER Jeffrey B. Glaser, MD Medical Director
16311 Ventura Blvd., Suite #518 Encino 818-501-PAIN (7246) glaserpainrelief.com
In which ways do you provide your patients easy-to-understand information about their condition?
“We educate patients about their condition using 3-D models, posters and diagrams as well as take-home handouts. Additionally, our website is full of useful educational resources. I feel very strongly that patients should understand the cause of their pain and treatment options.”
FAST FACT Dr. Glaser is board-certified by both the American Board of Pain Medicine and the American Board of Anesthesiology.
What are some of the latest advances in health care today?
“One of the latest advances in pain management came in 2015 with the FDA approval of the Nevro HF10 Senza spinal cord stimulator (SCS)—an implantable pacemaker for pain. The Nevro HF10 system works best for back and leg pain that has failed other interventions. Patients undergo a minimally invasive trial of the technology prior to deciding on whether implantation of the pacemaker for pain is right for them. What other surgical procedure can you test-drive first? The Nevro HF10 Senza SCS is changing the lives of many of our patients by reducing pain and improving their ability to participate in the activities they enjoy most.”
What question or concern do you frequently hear from patients?
“Patients who are suffering from back or neck pain and sciatica have often been told they ‘need’ spine surgery. Pain by itself is not a true indication for surgery in most circumstances. There are no guarantees that major invasive surgery will treat or cure a patient’s pain. It’s important for patients to understand that unless their spine issue is causing motor weakness of the arms or legs, loss of muscle mass in the extremities, loss of control of bowel or bladder function, or they have severe spinal stenosis or a tumor—surgery is rarely indicated. Instead the goal should be to reduce pain by the most minimally invasive means possible without controlled substances such as narcotics.”

He and Dr. Sarmela Sunder provide patients with natural surgical makeovers such as rhinoplasty, eyelid lift and facelift. The practice also offers injectables, Ultherapy®, Fraxel®, microneedling with Platelet Rich Plasma, Coolsculpting™ and Venus Freeze™ for those seeking a cosmetic avenue for facial rejuvenation and body contouring.
What is the latest study that excites you?
“Billy Crystal’s Saturday Night Live character Fernando said things like, ‘When you look marvelous, you feel marvelous’ and ‘Remember, it’s better to look good than feel good!’ Well, he may not have been too far off. Recent studies have shown that Botox® may be as effective for the treatment of depression as antidepressants. Our brains can sense the expression on our face. When we look sad, tense or angry, the facial muscles are contracted, the brain senses this and we feel sad, tense or angry. Botox® relaxes the muscles that create angry, stressed faces, which results in a rested, calm, happy face. The majority of Botox® patients report ‘feeling really good’ a few days after their Botox® injections. Many facial plastic surgeons believe that we may be treating depression with Botox® within the next five years.”
What is the latest trend your practice is noticing?
“There has been a large increase in the number of millennials who are requesting facial aesthetic treatments. The treatment of young patients demands a most conservative and natural approach. Minimal amounts of Restylane Silk® and Juvéderm Ultra Plus® are used to create soft, full, natural, sexy lips. Botox® used in minuscule doses on younger faces gives a more rested look, tightening the forehead and diminishing lines around the eyes. Some believe that early Botox® treatment minimizes facial rhytids (lines) later in life.”

What is the most consistent demand in your practice?
“Faces begin to lose bone volume from age 25 on, resulting in early facial sagging. Hollows under the eyes, diagonal cheek valleys, nasolabial folds all immediately improve with properly placed Juvederm Voluma® and/or Sculptra®. Dr. Michael Persky is on the advisory board and a clinical injector trainer for Sculptra® and has injected more Voluma® than any other practice in The Valley.”

COMPREHENSIVE MATERNAL-FETAL MEDICINE CENTER Roy Mansano, MD Owner
D
r. Roy Mansano, owner of Comprehensive Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center, cares for pregnant patients with chronic health problems as well as unexpected pregnancy issues. The practice provides complete prenatal ultrasound services and diagnosis for women with both high-risk and low-risk pregnancies. Dr. Mansano earned his medical degree from the Technion School of Medicine in Haifa, Israel. He completed an internship at Bridgeport Hospital/ Yale University and a residency as well as a fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
How do you distinguish yourself from the competition?
“I have been involved in research projects evaluating preterm labor, fetal programming and fetal hypoxia. I was the primary investigator in a large laboratory study assessing the programming effects of growth restriction on the offspring kidney and blood pressure. I provide a unique prospective and ability to optimize maternal health and thus long-term offspring wellbeing.”

What does the future hold for your field?
“In recent years there have been numerous advances in the field of Maternal Fetal Medicine. With improvements in ultrasound technology and the recent availability of both maternal blood testing for fetal DNA and extensive genetic disease carrier screening, our ability to identify a fetus at risk has dramatically improved. These technologies continue to progress every year.”
FAST FACT Dr. Mansano received the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society/ Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine award in 2008 for work focusing on the effects of the uterine environment on the offspring’s adult health.
When did you move to this area?
“I moved to Los Angeles when I was 8 years old and spent the rest of my childhood in the
San Fernando Valley. I am thrilled to practice medicine in the community where I was raised and where I am raising my five children.”
What advice do you give for preventing illness?
“Enhancing the health of the mother is crucial for a successful pregnancy. We work with every pregnant patient to ensure she is at optimal health during her pregnancy, and we specialize in pre-pregnancy consultations to improve maternal health prior to conception.”
In what ways does the technology you use enhance your patients’ experience at your office?
“We use the latest ultrasound technology, including 3-D/4-D imaging and high-definition imaging, to ensure that every patient feels confident that they’ve had the best diagnostic imaging available. Patients can watch the entire ultrasound on a large, easy-to-view screen and then take home a DVD to enjoy the ultrasound again with friends and family.”

How does having a strong relationship with you benefit your patients?
“It is absolutely imperative to have mutual trust and respect. I truly want to have happy, satisfied patients, so we work together toward that goal. Patients are treated as individuals and are listened to. Whether the patient is a celebrity, supermom or CEO, their needs are heard and, if at all possible, met. I feel medical and cosmetic treatments are a collaboration between doctor and patient.”
In what ways does the technology you use enhance your patients’ experience at your office?
“In our office we use technology that is effective—whether it be injectables such as Botox® or Juvederm® or energy devices such as Ultherapy® or Fraxel®. We have a variety of devices and can choose the one that is right for the patient’s specific concern, skin type, budget and down-time needs. Our ‘Derm Dream Team’ is a solid group of professionals with many years’ experience in treating skin, and we have effectively treated thousands of patients.”
What advice do you give for preventing illness?
“Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! And sun avoidance. This prevents both skin cancer and premature aging. Our population now wants to look as great as they feel. The smartest thing to do for your skin is to prevent sunburns and excessive tanning and to teach our kids the same.”
Tell us something unique about your business.
“Our practice is a ‘happy place,’ where patients are at ease, relaxed, cared for.”

Night Rider Mountain biking after dark? It sounds crazy, but as one nervous Nellie discovered, barreling across the hills after sunset is nothing short of euphoric. Written by Anne M. Russell
T
he first time I ever heard about mountain biking after dark was when a friend told me a guy she was dating had broken his neck riding off an unseen ledge during a group ride. (He wasn’t paralyzed; just badly hurt.) I love mountain biking, but I’m not an X Games kamikaze. I’ve never shouted anything about wanting to “bomb the downhills” or “shred the gnar,” so I found the idea of riding in the darkness deeply unappealing. I imagined sheer terror— plunging downhill into total blackness. But friends, who explained that night bikers use high-intensity lights on their handlebars and helmets, gradually won me over. I figured the nice group of female mountain bikers I ride with, Girlz Gone Riding, couldn’t all be crazy, so there must be something I was missing. After a year or so of refusing invitations, I bought a handlebar light and joined them for a ride. We began around 6:00 p.m. on a hot summer evening and stuck to familiar fire roads—no narrow single track with hidden hazards. The first wonderful discovery was that it gets cooler as the ride goes on. That might seem obvious, but I’d experienced so many bike expeditions where the temperature soared from pleasant to blistering, that I took it for granted that all summer mountain rides ended in a pool of burning sweat with my skin sizzling from too much UV exposure. But as the sun dropped

behind the mountains, the evening air became cool and fresh, and scented with sage. There was also the surprise of seeing the exact moment when day turns to night, which is a luxury that the long days of summer afford us. We start in daylight, but then a moment comes at dusk when all color leaves the landscape. The shrubs, rocks and plants become vague dark outlines against the dim sky. When we turn our lights on, the world narrows to just the trail. During the day, I’m a skittish rider, always looking around nervously. Am I passing that branch too close? Am I going to wash out in that rut up ahead? What if I ride into that tangle of barbed wire? After dark, all those concerns are put to rest. Pedaling along enveloped in cool darkness feels safe. The bike seems to float above the surface of the trail and I’m suddenly flying. I look over my shoulder and in the distance I see other riders’ bright points of light floating down the dark trail behind me like falling stars. In daylight, I don’t feel anything spiritual about mountain biking; my mind is too caught up in imagining catastrophes. But in the calm of night, I imagine that each little star represents a soul. I think of a line from a Victorianera poem: “The gates of Heaven are always/Open at the day’s decline.” And I feel joy. l Anne M. Russell lives in Woodland Hills and rides road, mountain and cyclo-cross bikes for fun.
