MAY/JUNE 2021 ARTIST ALCOVE Where Lichtenstein, Haring and Ruscha meet up in the Valley. Just turn the page...
in perfect harmony THE INTERSECTION OF ART, DESIGN AND MUSIC AT THE VALLEY HOME OF JOHN AND COLLEEN SHANKS. Written by Linda Grasso | Photographed by Shane O’Donnell
It wasn’t as if John and Colleen Shanks weren’t happy in their Beverly Hills home when they decided to move 10 years ago. It was on a prime street and there was certainly enough space for them and their two sons. “What we needed was more space for our art collection,” explains John, a Grammy award-winning producer, musician and writer who has worked with Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson, Sheryl Crow and Keith Urban, among many others. “We started out with a love of ’60s pop art like the work of Keith Haring, and then it grew from there. We like contemporary art. In particular I like classics like Ed Ruscha, who, for me, is the number one most important California artist alive today. I also really like Roy Lichtenstein,” he says, pointing to a rare, oversized handwoven wool tapestry hanging on the dining room wall. The couple’s discovery of a home on the other side of the hill was somewhat serendipitous. A friend from the Valley mentioned that the brand new house next door to him—a Mediterranean in a neighborhood with numerous A-list celebrities—was for sale, and the Shanks went to take a look. The home, situated on a rectangular one-acre lot behind a tall fence, offered plenty of privacy.

Works in the living room include a commissioned mixed-media piece by Tristan Eaton behind one sofa and another by Ellsworth Kelly over the fireplace mantel. “Whereas many don’t use their living rooms, the opposite is true here. I like to sit on the sofa and | 21 look out the window in the mornings when the light comes in,” shares Colleen.
This set of prints by Ed Ruscha in a dining space off the kitchen are among John’s favorite pieces. “Ruscha released them one at a time over the course of several years. I bought two and then kind of got obsessed at having six, which is rare. I called a lot of galleries to get these and I chased one down on art.net,” John laughs.
With soaring 40-foot ceilings and 14,000 square feet, the structure seemed to beckon their art collection. “The wall

“We started out thinking this would be the family room or ‘the great room,’ but ultimately it has become the place where John likes to write and create,” says Colleen. The works flanking the drapery are by Cleon Peterson. Right: an aerial view of the chandelier and platinum-hued dome in the foyer.
Additional changes: All the fireplaces in the home were redone; the kitchen was renovated, and multiple wall finishes—like the gray Venetian plaster finish and velvet wallpaper in the dining room—were installed throughout. “Mike is very creative when it comes to wall finishes. He kept nudging me toward wallpaper, which I originally wasn’t really a fan of. But now I love it,” says Colleen. “It really adds warmth to the rooms.” Mike describes the opportunity to work on a property with a world-class art collection “a designer’s gift” and shares that the art often was the impetus for décor. “After selecting where best to place the painting or

photography, I would extract a color from the piece and use it as drapery or a fabric color. The major challenge was to be careful that the wall color and texture did not compete with the art. After all, the art work is the punch. Good design and architecture need to complement without overshadowing,” he says. Now that their boys are grown and on their own (Dylan, 23, is an A&R executive at Atlantic Records and a manager for artists; Jackson, 20, is a student at New York University), Colleen says friends keep asking her if they will remain in the house. “I keep telling people yes, we will! Why would we move? This is our home. We created it for us and we love it. It doesn’t feel too big because we actually use all of the space. Plus, it is so peaceful and quiet. It’s just a lovely lifestyle here in the Valley.” ■

Natives are water-wise and droughttolerant, and they attract birds and bees that drink nectar from flowers. “Lots of our insects are very specialized and need plants they co-evolved with to survive,” Tim says. “Ninety percent of butterflies need a specific type of plant for their larvae. The obvious example is milkweed and monarchs. When you plant native plants, you create habitats for our native fauna.” Tim also connects the importance of natives to a love for Southern California, which he calls a “biodiversity

Fruits Of Your Labor FRUITSTITUTE’S JOANNA GLOVINSKY ON HOW TO HAVE A TREE THAT EXPLODES WITH FRUIT. Written by Dakota Kim | Illustrated by Nikki Smith
The Valley is full of glorious fruit trees—veritable ranches are hidden in backyards, and orchards grow in plain sight out front. Yet few of us actually know about proper care for our trees. Joanna Glovinsky, the founder of Fruitstitute (fruitstitute.com), LA’s only fruit tree care and education service, aims to help homeowners with their orchards, whether one tree or 50. Here are her suggestions on Valley tree care, from root to crown.
Water with a long, slow flow of drip irrigation, going as far as the canopy of leaves extends and slightly farther. Don’t water near or on the trunk, as that can cause rot. The amount of water depends on species, soil type, weather and time of year. In general, 20 to 40 minutes of deep watering is required to saturate soil and reach deep roots.

of a tree in one year; avoid overpruning.
•
Understand that fruit trees require different and more specialized care than forest or landscape trees.
•
Trees should be fertilized and mulched once to twice a year, during spring and/ or fall. The best feed is wood mulch. Fertilization should occur with rich compost for the soil.
•
Start your care regime early. The first five years of a tree’s life are important, but the first two to three years are vital. Fertilize and mulch early on and you’ll have a happier tree later.
•
Yellow leaves indicate over- or underwatering. If you’ve underwatered,

•
Thin fruit early on, because a fruit tree will overproduce and you won’t get good fruit the following year. ■
Fertilize soil in spring and fall with compost, and add wood mulch around the tree during the vital first five years of your tree’s life. Don’t use gravel as mulch or plant a tree near concrete.

transformations WHETHER IT WAS A COMPLETE RENOVATION OR SIMPLY A ROOM REFRESH, MANY OF US SPENT THE PAST YEAR WORKING ON OUR HOMES. HERE, IN THEIR OWN WORDS, SOME TALENTED INTERIOR DESIGNERS AND DESIGN ENTHUSIASTS SHARE THE HOW-TO ON THEIR MAKEOVERS.
BALCONY BY COLETTE SHELTON cococozy.com In renovating this 1930s Spanish home for a project I did called the Cococozy Design House, I knew the balcony was going to be one of the most integral elements. It overlooks a sprawling backyard and you can see it from every angle. The balcony felt dated and lifeless, so the decision to completely redo the tile was an easy one. The mission: to make the balcony pop. I wanted all eyes drawn to the new tile. That said, the major challenge was choosing the tile color and pattern. I wasn’t entirely sure how I wanted to approach it. Since the space was a focal point on the property, I wanted the area to feel special and unique but also be comfortable. I envisioned this as a space that would be used and enjoyed—not one just for show. Part of me felt like big, bold, bright colors would make for an interesting design aesthetic. But I ultimately felt the black and white was more striking. Plus it makes the space feel modern yet timeless.

DEN/BAR BY ORIT SROUR @oritsrourdesigns on Instagram This den in a Toluca Lake traditional-style home was so cold, dowdy and unwelcoming that the clients rarely used the space. It lacked the chic and sophisticated style they were after. The couple wanted it to feel like the high-styled lounges of the New York hotels they frequent. The bar got a total makeover. Because the cabinetry was well made and in excellent condition, I had my master carpenter add ¼-inch fluted oak panels to the existing faces. Then we applied a rich, dark, walnut stain. We selected super luxurious Italian marble that ultimately set the tones for the color scheme of the room—rich amber jewel tones. “I LITERALLY CHOOSE HAPPINESS EVERY SINGLE DAY.” I grew up with divorced parents; one lived in Beverly Hills, the other just outside in Beverlywood. I was a poor little rich girl, quite literally. My mom struggled while my father had a steady and established career. It was strange. I learned very young that it was a volatility that I never wanted to maintain. This is one of my “whys.” I attended USC after transferring from Santa Monica College. I was accepted into the theater program, but I realized that I wanted to have something to say in a room of suits, so I changed my major to political science and focused on the Middle East. I loved every minute of it. My first year out of college, I worked for a boutique public relations firm in Beverly Hills—learning the hustle and getting to “yes” by all means necessary for our clients. That same year, my family’s world was rocked. My beautiful 16-year-old sister suffered traumatic brain injury in a car accident on Sunset Boulevard on Valentine’s Day—a sudden reminder at the mere age of 24 that life is short and fragile and to love hard on those you love. She remains in the same state as she did that day. I am reminded daily of the care we must take for one another. This is another “why” for me. After recognizing that nothing was going to be easy in this life, that if I wanted something I had to go out and make it happen, I had my aha moment: Happiness is a choice. I cannot

DESCRIBE THE FEATURED PROJECT. The featured project is the concept known as “integration.” State-of-the-art home integration combines the various technologies into a unified system that is controlled via the user interface or dashboard, pictured in the main image. The dashboard is fully customizable to the user’s preferences, allowing the user to create a home technology experience that suits their needs. WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER? Many clients come to us interested in one or two kinds of technology—a new surveillance system, a simplified entertainment system, smart lights, etc. But home technology doesn’t have to be an amalgamation of disconnected systems. The primary service we provide is an integrated home technology system—different technologies interwoven, controlled from a unified dashboard and tailored to the user’s preferences. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FEATURE TO INCLUDE IN A HOME OFFICE? A dedicated video conferencing system. As everyone has learned over the last year, video conferencing can cause headaches, especially when run from a laptop—Wi-Fi lags, awkward camera angles, poor audio quality, juggling different windows and applications—the list goes on. A dedicated video conferencing system with high-quality audio and video components can solve all of those issues.

I CAN ONLY UPDATE ONE ROOM IN MY HOME; WHICH ROOM SHOULD IT BE? Whichever room you use most for entertainment. Whether it’s your living room, your bedroom or a dedicated media room, it’s where you spend the majority of your relaxation time, and we aim to make that time as relaxing and satisfying as possible. With so many entertainment and media options now available, we can tailor your entertainment system to provide the exact experience you want. HAVE YOU CHANGED THE WAY YOU DO BUSINESS DUE TO THE PANDEMIC? Aside from the preventive measures everyone is taking now, the biggest change has been to what our clients need. Having reliable Wi-Fi throughout a home is now incredibly important for both working and learning, as is having a great entertainment system for when the working and learning are done. In a stressful world, we see our role as making sure technology isn’t a source of stress. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRM. We’re a friends-and-family business. We first imagined the company when we were college roommates. As it grew, we staffed it with people we knew and trusted. The circumstances of the last year taught us the value of relationships—especially in-person interaction. We’ve spent time getting to know clients, friends and neighbors better—understanding what would make their lives easier.

WHAT DO YOU WANT POTENTIAL CLIENTS TO KNOW ABOUT THE SERVICES YOU OFFER? My firm offers many design services, but my concierge turnkey design service is a favorite. So many of my clients live overseas. I work with them from the start, looking for a home, to the finish, when they walk into their new home to find their favorite coffee, teas and breakfast waiting for them when they move in. We offer a complete lifestyle design—even while clients are out of the country. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SOURCES OF INSPIRATION IN YOUR WORK? I recently moved to Los Angeles from NYC after spending 15 years living in Tokyo and Hong Kong. Without a doubt, travel is one of my biggest inspirations. I love learning about new cultures and love when a client wants to show their culture or incorporate their favorite finds into their home. Art and design work inspire me equally. Since moving to L.A., I have been working more and more on the concept of indoor-outdoor living. Using La Cantina doors accomplishes this beautifully. The design industry has heeded the call with great products that withstand the elements: heaters, fans, outdoor furniture, plants, fireplaces, audio/visual, tiles and stone. The design and decor of your outdoor space are just as important as the design of your indoor space. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FEATURE TO INCLUDE IN A HOME OFFICE? A home office today has to function exactly like the office that was left behind because of COVID-19. When I meet with clients, we speak about whiteboards, TV monitors, technology and Zoom lighting first—then we discuss design. Great design only works if it functions too. I CAN ONLY UPDATE ONE ROOM IN MY HOME; WHICH ROOM SHOULD IT BE? Your bedroom. We spend so much time in bed; why not make it beautiful, inviting and simply gorgeous? When I work with clients, I find out what makes them happy, content, comfortable. I often hear that they want their bedroom to be a sanctuary—a place of their own apart from the rest of the house.

Your home has never been worth more than it is today! WHY DOES THE REAL ESTATE MARKET CURRENTLY FAVOR SELLERS? The answer is simple, the supply of available housing for sale does not match the demand by buyers who have been seeking to move out of dense city centers, in search of more square footage, larger yards and gated communities. Low interest rates have made it possible for many buyers to qualify for loans and trade up. IS THIS A GOOD TIME TO SELL? Yes, your home has never been worth more than it is today! Inventory remains low, but as both Los Angeles and Orange counties move into California’s orange tier, the next-to-last step in the state’s reopening process, we expect inventory to rise, and as supply rises prices stand to decrease as newly listed homes saturate the market.

WHERE DO I GO IF I SELL? There are options! We have experienced an influx of clients for whom we have been able to negotiate time in their current homes while we help them find their next dream home. One of the many advantages of working with us is first-hand access to our off-market listings. In the past few months alone we have sold multiple homes off-market and our team’s win rate in multiple offers is unmatched. There may also be a property tax advantage with the inception of Proposition 19 that could potentially save you money and further extend your buying power, let us look at your options together, everyone’s situation is different. HOMES SHOULD SELL ON THEIR OWN IN THIS MARKET... WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF WORKING WITH YOUR TEAM? Our team provides a client first approach to Real Estate that creates a competitive advantage for our clients. We have built a reputation of respect and trust within the broker community that serves on our client’s behalf in the negotiation process. We designed our list price strategy to maximize your home’s sales price. Our success rate is in our numbers; in 2020 we sold 90 homes, $120M in sales and in 2021 year to date we have sold 47 homes, $78M in sales.

WHY SHOULD SELLERS INTERVIEW YOU BEFORE LISTING THEIR HOME? You may find other REALTORS® to list your home but none will match our team’s client first approach. We offer a competitive advantage through our dedicated team members whose role is to place your home in front of more sellers ahead of the MLS and traditional digital media outlets, we strategically launch the sale of your property via our network of colleagues at The Agency and hyper-target qualified home buyers based on their lifestyle and propensity to make a move. We can’t divulge our entire marketing plan in this short space, but we invite you to get to know us better by following our social media accounts. Available for clients with a minimum of $500,000 or more in investable post-close assets, and at least $50,000 in traditional assets must be on deposit with Citi at least 10 days prior to closing. This amount may be part of the $500,000 eligibility requirement.
