A League of Their Own
A
s luck would have it, the evening we decided to shoot the local all-female roller derby league featured in Anne Russell’s story (page 70), it was one of summer’s hottest days. As I drove up the freeway and saw the temperature of 105° on my dashboard, I wondered if many of the players would show up. In a testament to their toughness, they did—all of them. I must say I thoroughly loved my intro into this sport. Ranging in age from 18 to 48, and with names like Fearless Bueller and Night Fury, they’re everything from teachers to lawyers. My curiousity was piqued. Why do they do it? How often do they get hurt? I found the whole thing fascinating and even had a hearty chuckle when they tried to convince me that convince me that someone as puny as I am could be in the league. See photo above and you’ll laugh too. Another compelling feature in our annual WOMEN’s issue: Diane Haithman’s story on regenerative medicine (page 82). Sure a little botox and filler can take the edge off the aging process, but for many people looking good isn’t as important as feeling good. And the solution for an increasing number of people is regenerative medicine—meds and therapies aimed at renewing or restoring body functions. In this issue, we also celebrate some of the dynamic endeavors that women in this community are taking on—women who are going for it and succeeding wildly. In reading through the Women in Business Profiles (page 90), in particular, I’m inspired to participate in Tuscan Women Cook, the brainchild of two Valley moms who are recent empty nesters. Learning to cook Italian in a village with nonnas? I’m in. Finally, a big congratulations to one of my favorite writers. Years ago I read a couple of heartfelt essays by Susan McMartin. On a whim, I reached out to her via email. She suggested we meet for breakfast—which we did—and she ended up writing several terrific “Last Word” essays for us. The TV writer (Mom) enters the film foray this month with Mr. Church, which premieres in theaters this month. The indie drama, starring Eddie Murphy, is based on Susan’s real-life experience growing up in LA after her cancer-stricken mother hired a cook (Murphy). Congrats Susan—can’t wait to see the movie!

Sweet Success
Longtime and beloved Valley pediatrician J.J. Levenstein switches gears midlife—to some pretty delicious results. PHOTOGRAPHED BY LESLIE
TALLEY |
J.J. Levenstein has never taken “no” for an answer. She was raised by a single mother who worked at a grocery store. At the age of 12, after volunteering as a candy striper, J.J. knew she wanted to be a pediatrician, but it wasn’t easy. The San Francisco native applied to medical school four times before getting accepted by USC at age 28. For nearly a decade the physician tended to thousands of patients at Valley Pediatrics, before opening up her own practice. Then, in 2012, to just about everybody’s surprise, J.J., at the time only 55, walked away from all of it. But as Editor Linda Grasso discovered, the past four years have been anything but a laidback retirement.
Why did you leave your pediatrics practice? You worked so hard and long to get there and you were only 55! I got burned out. With technology, I just couldn’t ever get away from it.

People would constantly send emails and call me on my cell. I actually had some people get my home address off the backs of checks that I’d sent for bar mitzvah gifts! After all those years of school, not to mention student loans, it must have been a gutwrenching decision to leave your practice. It was. But I’d “lost that lovin’ feeling” and people— including my patients— were noticing it. I spoke with my husband and son and we all agreed it was time to go. My husband had been a stay-at-home dad and “Dr. J.J.’s husband” for years—and we needed to work on “us.” Were you afraid? No. With my son in college, it was the right time (he’s now getting his MBA). Plus, I’d gained weight. I was 35 pounds heavier and needed to take care of myself. So how did you decide to become a chef? I always had a thing about cooking. After leaving my practice, I went to Westlake Culinary Institute for a six-month class. It was a way for me to find out if I had the chops. I wanted to learn how to take down a lobster and how to pick open oysters. I had a ball. So you zeroed in on gourmet ice cream? I tried catering but didn’t love it. Then the father of

Over three margaritas he said ‘Hey why don’t you start selling us some of your ice cream for Cascabel?’ and I agreed! I started with a rum raisin, rice pudding, horchata flavor served atop a brownie. And now you are making ice cream for sale at the new takeout spot, The Blvd Kitchen in Sherman Oaks. Favorite flavors? Right now: Apple Pie Sorbet, S’mores and Lemon Basil Blackberry. Ice cream is really creative. I think of what is currently selling at farmer’s markets, what might work well together, what I have on hand etc. I let my mind explode with possibilities.
We women tend to take care of other people and put our own needs and dreams on a back burner. Not you. I’ve always felt that I matter. To make a serious change, you need to be self-confident and have supportive people. If the people in your life don’t support you, then it can be hard. My husband believed in me. I’ve always worked and been pretty self-sufficient, but it is all much better with him at my side.
Then, that same year, you get another opportunity. It’s generated from yet another patient who has given your name to the casting director of the Home & Family show on the Hallmark Channel. Yes. I started doing appearances once a week and then

Heading to the Poles Think pole dancing is about objectifying women? Think again, says champion pole dancer and studio owner Sergia Louise Anderson. WRITTEN BY ANNE PHOTOGRAPHED BY
M. RUSSELL ALLOY IMAGES
S
ergia Louise Anderson discovered pole dancing at age 28, after more than a decade as an actress and dancer. A quick study, she soon entered pole competitions, winning the US Pole Dance Federation 2012 Amateur Championship and the 2013 US National Championship. Now 34, she runs The Vertitude in Canoga Park, the Valley’s largest pole dancing studio. After opening the 1,500-square-foot location in 2011, Sergia discovered some unexpected rewards. “One of my favorite things about teaching pole is seeing women blossom,” she says. “Over three to six months, they build up strength and confidence, and they hold themselves differently and speak up. It’s a beautiful kind of haven.” If you’re imagining a roomful of Valley homemakers in six-inch Lucite heels and bikinis jiggling around stripper-style, think again. Sergia makes it very clear that she is not a training ground for local strip clubs and that pole dancing, as she teaches it, has deep roots in a variety of respected athletic traditions. “It comes from Chinese pole, acrobatics, pole mallakhamb [Indian pole],” says Sergia. “The pole is just an apparatus.” In fact, she notes, pole is one of the sports under consideration for inclusion in the Olympics, specifically the form known as “sport pole,” which focuses on athleticism and is performed barefoot. (“Classic” or “sensual” pole is the exotic-dance-influenced style.) The Vertitude offers some 30 classes each week, daily 60- or 90-minute sessions for everyone from beginners to pole competitors. Classes like Flexotic, Slow and Sultry and Pole Exotic require high heels and follow the sensual pole tradition, while the technique classes are about building strength, skill and stamina. Students range in age from 18 to 63 and include a handful of men. “This is our adult jungle gym,” says Sergia. “This is play time and play is extremely important for mental health.”

VENTURA BLVD, SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016
BEHIND THE WORKOUT If you think pole dancing classes aren’t “real” exercise—now there’s a scientific journal study that says otherwise. Titled “Physical and Physiological Demands in Women Pole Dance” and published in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness earlier this year, the study showed that a pole routine is physically challenging, causing blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate to skyrocket. The sport can also build enormous upper body and core strength and works almost every muscle in the body. As Sergia puts it, “It’s Pilates turned into movement.”

sure you have a big fat emergency fund, because things will go wrong.” She also suggests getting a good line of credit, “for slow-pay clients and unexpected expenses that pop up.”
START SAVING EARLY “And continue to contribute, no matter what,” says Weston. “Retirement needs to be the cornerstone of your savings— then leave the money the hell alone! Women are living longer and are paid less so you have to save more than is sometimes comfortable. We don’t want to be old, but we really don’t want to be old and broke.”
CONSULT WITH A FINANCIAL PLANNER When you need outside advice, see a fee-only financial planner. “These people are paid only by the fees you pay them—not from commission or kickbacks,” advises Liz. If you already have a financial planner, ask if he or she is willing to be a fiduciary for you. “This means that your interests will come first and he or she will act only in your best interest.”
omen have unique reasons to understand and take control of their finances—so says financial writer Liz Weston. “We earn less than men, we live longer, and we take breaks from employment to raise kids—all of which make us economically vulnerable,” explains Liz, a columnist for NerdWallet (a personal finance site), syndicated financial writer and longtime Studio City resident. Here Liz offers some must-know money tips for women.
THINK TWICE ABOUT QUITTING Want to quit your job to stay home with the your baby? Think again. Look at the long-term cost in terms of being eligible for raises, loss of 401K savings and career position. “If you stay in the job,” says Weston, “you’ll be in a better place when your kids are in school than if you dropped out and tried to come back in.” At the very least, keep one foot in the door and work part-time. KNOW WHAT YOU’RE WORTH “When I had to quote a day rate for the first time I had no idea what to ask for,” shares Liz. “A neighbor who was an entertainment attorney said ask for X—and it was 10 times what I would have asked for. So I did, and I got it!” she says, adding that women must learn what others are paid in their fields. “We need to be more aggressive advocates for ourselves.” ENTREPRENEUR WITH CAUTION Being an entrepreneur has many benefits. “But before you take that leap, get a really good understanding of the market, how much you can expect to earn and how long it will take for you to be profitable,” says Liz. “And make

EDUCATE YOURSELF “A lot of women have never paid attention to finances, or felt it was beyond them,” Liz says. “But you can learn this; it’s within your grasp.” A few books she recommends—Prince Charming Isn’t Coming by Barbara Stanny and Personal Finance for Dummies by Eric Tyson.
BE SMART ABOUT TAXES Want to do your own taxes? Take advantage of reasonably priced software like Turbo Tax. “But if you have anything complex or unusual, it makes so much sense to meet with a tax pro, someone you can talk to and ask questions of.” BUILD A SUPPORT TEAM “You want to build a team of people who help you with your finances and who you can trust,” counsels Liz. This will include a Certified Financial Planner and a tax professional. “If cost is an issue, consider an enrolled agent as your tax pro. They’re not as expensive as a CPA and many enrolled agents are former IRS agents so they’re knowledgeable. What you want is someone who lives and breathes taxes, who does it 24/7 rather than part-time and who can represent you in front of the IRS if there is an audit.” Liz Weston has written several books, including 10 Commandments of Money. Color My World
With a well-defined strategy, bold strokes of color can yield wondrous results.
S
ure neutrals can soothe, but after awhile they can leave you hankering for a burst of color. From fuchsia to eggplant, rich colors can up the ante on a space. Take a look at what Sherman Oaks-based designer Lisa Lerner did with this Studio City “transitional” home belonging to Sarah Thomas. Sarah, who owns and is the director of Sunnyside Preschool in Studio City, has always been a fan of bold shades. So from the get-go color was on the menu. Lisa started with navy and a natural linen shade. “I typically introduce only two main colors into my design palette. Introducing too many colors can make a room feel chaotic. From the dominant colors chosen, I then incorporate different shades into the space.” Lastly, Lisa selects an accent color. In this case it was pink. The designer says it’s also important to determine what the client’s goal is as it relates to adding color. “Are they looking to feel happy, calm, inspired? Do they want their space to be dramatic, glamorous or casual chic? Choice of color is the driving force for how you feel when you walk into a space.” Sarah’s goal was simple: “I wanted the house to feel happy and bright.” And as you can see, indeed it does.
The vintage chairs that flank the fireplace are upholstered in Kelly Wearstler’s Modern Trellis for Schumacher. They provide dimension while adding something unexpected to the space.
The rug is from The Rug Warehouse in Culver City. A Soumak Arts & Crafts style rug, it is the “tour de force” in this room. It is bold and fun.

A white hue, “Foggy Day” by Dunn Edwards, was used on the walls. Believe it or not, there is a hint of green in it!
When I presented Sarah with these John Robshaw pillows, she loved them, so I ran with that navy color palette with shades of neutrals to compliment.
THINK PINK
I chose books in our color scheme—blues and pinks—and then layered them in stacks of two or three. I placed (on the lower level) accessories on top of the stacks.
ourventurablvd.com
Knowing of Sarah’s love of pink, when it came to the family room, Lisa chose dark pink and yellow as the two focal colors. The first thing purchased was the bold multicolored rug (also from Rug Warehouse) and then the raspberrycolored sofa. “I had the sofa custom-made as well as the ottoman [Kravet fabric], which picks up the yellow in the rug. Woven wood shades allow maximum light to illuminate the space. The yellow throw is from Williams-Sonoma Home.

Y
ou might not have heard the name Marina Toybina, but if you love music, chances are you’ve seen her work. Marina has designed costumes for performers ranging from Justin Bieber to Carrie Underwood, and she’s worked on TV shows including The X Factor and So You Think You Can Dance. The Sherman Oaks resident is indisputably at the top of her game, with bragging rights to four consecutive Emmys from 2011 to 2015. One of those was for a Taylor Swift Grammy performance and another honored her work on the 2015 Super Bowl. Marina collaborated with Katy Perry as the designer for the much-ballyhooed halftime show (she sang the song Roar), describing the experience as “definitely one for the books. It was my first time creating life-size puppets, such as the sharks and chess pieces, and I enjoyed the rush and creative chaos of designing something new and unique on such a large scale.” Pretty impressive career for someone with beginnings that were “not glamorous.” The Russian native moved, along with her family, from Moscow to Arizona at the age of 11. Artsy as a youngster, Marina believes costume design was “always in my blood.” The family eventually migrated to LA where Marina attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. After graduating, she started worked on a clothing line and designed for stylists, magazines and music artists. “After years of dedicating my craft to the crossover between fashion and custom designs, I took a risk to pursue a different avenue of my career. I chose to focus solely on being the “go-to” costume designer for high-profile music artists, award shows, world tours, large scale stage productions and musicallyinclined TV shows.” The risk—and the singular focus—paid off. And these days, Marina, who is engaged to be married, appreciates the joys of being content. “I am exactly where I am supposed to be and doing what I’m supposed to be doing.”

PANIC STUDIO LA, COURTESY OF CITY OF LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS FROM ITS CURRENT: LA WATER PUBLIC ART BIENNIAL 2016.
F
or many Valley residents the LA River has been a constant presence in their lives. “I always knew I was close to home when I saw it, and it brought me a sense of safety, of place and of comfort. For me, the river was a hidden ecosystem running through the heart of the city growing up,” Northridge native Danielle Brazell, General Manager of the LA Department of Cultural Affairs, recalls. “Now I can see that in many ways the Los Angeles River ties us together. It’s the current wrapping around our city’s neighborhoods and weaving through our communities!” In fact, this winding current begins right here in the Valley, starting in Canoga Park just under Canoga Park High, at the confluence of Bell Creek and Calabasas Creek. In 2014, as one of over 200 projects outlined in a master plan, the $11.5-million LA River Headwaters Greenway opened at the site. The park is just one of the many projects the city has tackled in its effort to reclaim, rebrand and repopulate the river. “I believe the revitalized interest in the Los Angeles River symbolizes how our government and Angelenos are working toward creating an environment that is natural, sustainable, safe, enjoyable and accessible to everyone,” Danielle says. This summer, the city, aided by Bloomberg Philanthropies, encouraged civic involvement through CURRENT: L.A. Public Art Biennial (for more go to underlawater.com). The exhibit displayed site-specific works throughout the city, with the aim to elevate the conversation about water, sustainability and community. Artists, including Kori Newkirk, Refik Anadol and Peggy Weil, explored LA’s complicated and contentious relationship with water. One of the most affecting pieces was artist Kerry Tribe’s Exquisite Corpse, a 51-minute film tracing all 51 miles of the river, from Canoga Park to its outlet into the Pacific Ocean. According to Kerry, documenting the river was an amazing experience. “Whenever we thought we knew what to expect, the river would come up with something else!” she remembers. “We met with ecologists, anthropologists and homeowners; cowboys, cyclists and skaters; homeless people, real estate agents and the residents of a trailer park in Long Beach. What was perhaps most inspiring was to discover the great resilience of life along this river. Even in the most barren industrial stretches you’ll see shore birds wading in the shallows and swallows come out to swoop you at dusk. We met an exceptionally friendly duck, leashtrained cats and a lot of horses. Where there’s water, there’s life.“ This diverse ecosystem of humans and wildlife is exactly what the city officials hope to expand and promote in upcoming years. According to Steven Hartman, president of the California Native Plant Society, the Sepulveda Basin, one of only three softbottomed sections of the river, may soon include a new seasonal marsh south of Burbank Boulevard. In July, the city announced that a design team including Gruen Associates, landscape architect Mia Lehrer and Associates, and architects Oyler Wu Collaborative would begin work on a 12-mile portion of the Los Angeles River Greenway (master plan), which will enable Angelenos to walk or bike from Canoga Park to the Elysian Valley. Luckily for us, the river’s evolution and transformation—from concrete jungle into urban oasis—just keeps rolling along. “If not for the river, Los Angeles probably wouldn’t exist, so in one sense the river represents our past,” Kerry says. “But with serious restoration efforts finally taking shape, it also represents our future.”

Now I can see that in many ways the Los Angeles River TIES US TOGETHER. It’s the current wrapping around our city’s neighborhoods and weaving through our communities!”

lison Eastwood has always been an animal lover. When she lived in Topanga, she owned horses and she has always had dogs. She says her love of animals took a dramatic turn when she got involved with Animal Intervention on Nat Geo Wild. Alison helped create and hosted the show. “We traveled the country to help animals, mostly exotics, but I saw firsthand what was occurring in shelters. I realized that I had to do more than just document the problems. I had to start doing something about it,” she explains. That “call to action” resulted in the Calabasas resident [husband is sculptor Stacy Poitras] creating the Eastwood Ranch Foundation, a nonprofit that rescues (or removes) animals, mostly dogs and cats, from high-kill shelters. The foundation also participates in adoption events at shelters. “We’ve helped get hundreds of animals out in one week. We believe that working with other rescues is the key to making a greater impact,” says Alison. With a host of fosters and volunteers, the nonprofit gets animals into loving foster homes until they can be adopted. It also transports shelter animals to other states like Washington and Oregon where overpopulation isn’t as big of a problem. Fundraising is currently underway for the foundation’s own adoption center and Alison says her dad, Hollywood powerhouse Clint Eastwood, is a big supporter. “My dad is a huge animal lover. Our whole family is. He has come to all of our fundraisers and has made generous donations to help the critters. He’s proud of what we are doing.” Alison admits, with such a large shelter population, it is hard not to get discouraged. “But every time I get a call or an email from a happy family who loves their rescue pet, it makes it all worthwhile. We know we can’t save them all, but we know we make a difference and sometimes that’s what you have to focus on.” Alison believes the key to reducing the unwanted pet population is to enforce mandatory spay/neuter in California. She says, “We might actually be able to have very few animals in shelters. The laws need to change and be taken seriously for this epidemic to end.”

WHERE WE LIVE | WEEKENDER
Where The Girls Are Spend a weekend catching up and bonding in a desert hot spot that’s just a hop, shop and jump from LA.
F
or quality time with your BFFs, sure you could go to Vegas. But why not try something different that’s just as close and purposefully crafted to ooze with femme appeal? Here’s a weekend jaunt to the desert with plenty of pampering and pool time—as well as some strategic shopping mixed in. The desert could possibly be the hottest getaway destination within a two-hour stretch of the Valley. Since the arrival of Coachella and Stagecoach, the vacation destination is certifiably happening again and shows no signs of slowing down. We suggest two must-hit spots. Once a region for the wealthy and connected, Palm Springs is now a hub of all things mid-century modern with a gentrification (that kicked off about 10 years ago) still well underway. The town is filled with cool vintage shops, eclectic galleries and hip eateries, and attracts more than 2 million visitors a year. Often overlooked in favor of Palm Springs, La Quinta is our second favorite desert town, mostly because of the 45-acre La Quinta Resort and Club. With rooms, villas and casitas, the resort is incredibly picturesque and home to great golfing, an abundance of tennis courts and fine dining. Outside the resort, there is also charming Old Town La Quinta where the spirit and architecture of old California is brought to life along Main Street, which is filled with quaint shops and eateries. DAY ONE/FRIDAY Leave LA at noon. In two hours (assuming you avoid traffic), you’ll reach the Desert Hills Premium Outlets in Cabazon. We’re not talking Jockey and J.Crew here, people. This is a fashionista’s dream with stores including
44
VENTURA BLVD, SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016
YSL, Gucci, Bruno Cuccinelli, Rag & Bone and Marni, just to name a few. Allow three hours (minimum) to browse and try on the goods at the 133 stores. Jump back on the I-10, just past the picturesque windmills backed by ethereal mountains, and you’ll reach Palm Springs in less than a half hour. If you are staying beyond (east of) Palm Springs, make a pit stop for a killer margarita and the best guacamole this side of the border (get some to go!) at Armando’s Bar & Grill in Palm Desert. (Keep this place in mind throughout the weekend for excellent, casual Mexican cuisine.) If it is First Friday—the one night of the month stores on North Palm Canyon Drive stay open late—(and you didn’t bust the bank at the outlets) head to Palm Springs to continue shopping. DAY TWO/SATURDAY After your workout of choice, hit the spa with your besties at La Quinta Resort & Club and settle down for the rest of the day. Order lunch to be brought in. Since decadence tends to be on the menu for a girls weekend, why not go for an indulgent dinner? Hit Maestro’s in Palm Desert or the recently revised Mr. Lyons just down East Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs for steaks. Feeling up for some nightlife? You can’t beat the pool scene at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs. DAY THREE/SUNDAY Sleep in, and then head to Norma’s at the Parker in Palm Springs for brunch. Get the fast-food-style dried orange slices, and for those with a sweet tooth, the caramelized chocolate banana waffles napoleon. Hit the 111 Antique Mall (2500 North Palm Canyon Drive) before heading back to the hotel to pack up.

VENTURA BLVD, SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016
FOR SEAFOOD LOVERS Grill Concepts, Inc., the company behind the Public School eatery chain, has debuted Laurel Point, housed in the old Daily Grill spot (12050 Ventura Blvd.). With simple but well-appointed, nauticalthemed interiors, indoor/outdoor seating and a youthful, attractive staff (casting call?), and as one of the few local eateries with a seafood-oriented menu, Laurel Point has undeniable appeal. East coasters will delight in delicacies like fresh seasonal oysters, soft shell crab (the star of a “BLT” sandwich, which my waiter proclaimed his favorite item on the menu) and lobster. I opted for the lobster instead of the crab sandwich. A native Marylander, I’ve learned after 20 years of sampling West Coast soft shell versions that nothing compares. The ample, perfectly-cooked serving of lobster, stuffed into a tasty, lightly-buttered sourdough roll, was excellent.
Fresh fish choices include Alaskan halibut and Pacific swordfish and can be grilled with Tabasco-compound butter or blackened with rémoulade sauce. There is also a whole “Thai” snapper for two (dinner only) seasoned with cilantro ginger vinaigrette. For appetizers, diners can choose among an oysters Rockefeller made with kale, mussels immersed in a broth of garlic, shallots, and preserved lemons and a Mexicaninspired seafood cocktail with chunks of cucumber and avocado served with saltines. Don’t miss: Happy Hour. From 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. oysters on the half shell are a dollar; appetizers, cocktails and oyster shooters are also deeply discounted. There is a Bloody Mary shooter and a more interesting Asian-inspired one. The latter, served with sake, features a meaty oyster from Long Island (the “Naked Cowboy”) dressed in a zesty marinade of ponzu, cucumber and shallot.

SPICE WHIRLS For anyone who loves home-cooked meals but is bored with their own repertoire or for those who long for the convenience of packaged goods but want to avoid preservatives, The Spice Way (12238 B Ventura Blvd.) is a terrific option. The spacious specialty store carries a dizzying array of teas, beverage infusions, spices, rubs and ethnic spice blends. Working parents—short on time but big on healthy meals—will also appreciate the salad dressing, soup and dip spice mixes. For this shopping experience, it is best to lead with the nose. Everything is intoxicatingly fragrant and customers are encouraged to open bins and sample aromas. The owners—two local, friendly couples— pride themselves on freshness. “The herbs are all grown at a farm in Israel, dried and blended following time-honored traditions that preserve their farm-fresh goodness,” shares co-owner Ozy Bernstein. Olive oil is sourced in Northern California; the all-natural honey is from Thousand Oaks. Spice Way’s dried fruit infusions are unique (at least to this foodie). Designed to be seeped, they can be prepared either cold or warm and can also be infused into blended drinks or cocktails. “We love mixing the lemon one with gin or vodka,” giggles Ozy. Teas here (the colorful “Blueberry Fine” had us at hello) are equally as pungent but priced notably less than Teavana’s. Halva, a Middle East dessert made of sesame seed paste, is a specialty offered in six flavors from coffee to pistachio. Don’t miss: The zatar spice blend com-
prised of sesame seeds, almonds, thyme and sumac. It’ll take your chicken and lamb kabobs to a new level. We also love the shawarma blend (Ozy recommends it sprinkled on stir-fried chicken; we discovered it is fabulous on grilled salmon too). THE SCOOP There is a reason why Salt & Straw has a non-stop line out the door—even on weeknights. Their ice cream, which gleefully blows by borders between fruits and veggies and ice cream, is out of this world. Is it sweet? Savory? Earthy? All of the above. The Portland-based creamery has opened its fourth LA branch in prime Studio City (12180 Ventura Blvd). Crowd pleasing flavors include Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons along with daring ones like Avocado & Strawberry Sherbet (strawberry is the dominant flavor here), and Black Olive Brittle & Goat Cheese. And each month the creamery pushes the envelope even further with seasonal, farmto-table flavors designed to make “zealots squeal in delight.” September scoops include Maple Roasted Butternut Squash & Goat Cheese and Bone Marrow & Smoked Cherries. Bring it on.

CHILL THRILL A bowl from Ubatuba Acaí in Tarzana.
Bowled Over Angelenos, always quick to jump on the latest trend, have become enamored with the acaí berry. Here are some stand-out bowls along the Boulevard. WRITTEN BY JOSHUA
LURIE
A
tropical bird with purple plumage isn’t what you’d expect to see on the ground floor of the Times Square Plaza strip mall in Studio City, but it does speak for a particular tenant. RioZonas Açaí (12215 Ventura Blvd.) is one of the Valley’s leading practitioners of acaí, a sweet, tart, purple frozen treat made from the berry of a South American palm tree. Açaí, pronounced ah-sigh-EE, is high in antioxidants, outperforming better-known berries like cranberries and blueberries. RioZonas Açaí owner Evaldo Ferreira is originally from Minas Gerais, Brazil, and he started sharing the flavors of his youth at RioZonas Açaí last year. The methodology at RioZonas is to blend tart açaí with banana and strawberries, filling bowls with toppings like blackberries, cacao nibs, shaved almonds and granola. No matter what you choose, they’ll recommend granola, though you can also tap into toppings lke chia, almond butter, flax, or fruits like kiwi and mango. Daniela Demetrio was tired of “watered down” acaí, so she opened a shop with more concentrated flavor in Tarzana, naming Ubatuba Açaí (18641 Ventura Blvd.) for the Brazilian hometown she left in

1996, but frequently revisits. Daniela says, “It was a good way to build a bridge between the two countries that I love.” Six Ubatuba branches now span from Santa Monica to Northridge and San Luis Obispo. Ubatuba’s açaí is imported straight from Brazil and typically comes with banana, strawberry and granola. Boost your bowl with bee pollen, paçoquinha (peanut powder), passion fruit pulp or hemp seeds. Aric Haut worked in sports and entertainment for years. Repeated forays to Brazil resulted in The Harvest Bar (15030 Ventura Blvd.), a “superfood café” in Sherman Oaks with exposed wood rafters and crossed- spoon logo. Five different açaí bases are “all natural, with no sugar added.” Basic Harvest combines organic açaí, strawberry, blueberry, banana and apple juice, resulting in smoother texture than most açaí, with less tartness or brightness. Their Super Protein combo complements açaí with peanut butter, banana, dates, hemp protein and hemp milk. Toppings like almonds, pumpkin seeds, cacao nibs and goji berries are fair game, or you can create your own bowl by chosing a blend, proteins, powders and toppings. Aric promotes açaí not just for its antioxidants but for being “high in fiber and rich in heart-healthy fats.”

Heirloom tomatoes are some of the tastiest ways to stretch summer.
W
hile other regions of the country are saying goodbye to the intenselyflavored and colorful heirloom tomatoes, here in SoCal, our warm weather creates a farm-fresh bounty well into fall. In fact, some of tastiest fruits of the season come at summer’s end. As you savor them, enjoy these tidbits about this top-of-the-line variety.
The term “heirloom” (in relation to plants) was apparently first used by Kent Whealy of Seed Savers Exchange. He referenced “heirloom” in a speech he gave in Tucson in 1981. .
“Family” heirlooms are grown from seeds that have been passed down for several generations. Other newer varieties are the result of crossbreeding experiments.
Heirlooms are full of antioxidants, vitamins and cancer-preventing agents. Brandywine is a classic strain that many experts rank as the best all-around tasting tomato. It features large red fruits—up to 2 pounds each. Brandywine is an indeterminate variety, meaning it continues to grow after it begins producing fruit.
Color normally determines acidity. Darker shades are more acidic; lighter ones are less acidic. Green indicates tartness.
Why are heirlooms more flavorful? Any plant that sets only two or three fruits, as heirlooms sometimes do, is bound to produce juicier, sweeter and more flavorful fruit than varieties that generate 100.
66
VENTURA BLVD, SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016
A retired chemist from North Carolina created one of the most popular varieties sold, the Cherokee Purple. It has a delicious smoky flavor.
Heirlooms have a harder time fighting off disease and can easily bruise or split while shipping. Since they tend to stay local, farmers usually let the fruit ripen on the vine longer. That’s one reason farmers market heirlooms are often tastier than store-bought varieties, which are often picked before ripe.
Yellow and orange varieties usually have a milder and sweeter flavor while purple and black varieties have a bold, rich, acidic flavor.

Scratch Restaurants was started when Chefs Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee decided that they each wanted to put their personal spin on what a restaurant concept could be. Although each chef’s concepts remain unique and independent of one another, the constant thread that ties all Scratch Restaurants together is the chefs’ dedication to the artisanal “from scratch” approach to hospitality.

Old-time roller derby may have been campy and fake. But nowadays, as evidenced by one scrappy Valley team, it’s as real as it gets.

A Sisterhood on Skates
A
doctor, a lawyer and a history professor walk into an outdoor roller rink. What happens next is a bit unexpected. The women hit each other. Repeatedly. And hard. But there’s no ill will involved, just the kind of pure, unadulterated physical fun that grown-up ladies seldom experience. This is the San Fernando Valley Roller Derby league where about 100 women—ages 18 to 48—regularly step outside their everyday professional and familial personas and claim noms de guerre like Killo Kitty, Stockholm Syndi, Fearless Bueller and American Hurl Doll. They duke it out on a flat-track oval, with two five-women teams wrestling through each other’s lines to score points in two 30-minute bouts, by skating laps around the track. “It’s definitely a sisterhood,” says Staci Park, a.k.a. Killo Kitty, the league’s founder and president. The 38-year-old is an office manager when not skating, training or running the all-volunteer league. “It helps girls feel stronger.” Killo used to skate with the L.A. Derby Dolls, who compete on a banked track, old-time derby style. But with three young daughters, commuting into downtown LA for practices and bouts was too time-consuming. So in 2011, she inaugurated the Valley’s first flat-track league. “I started this league so more women could skate and play and still have a

life,” Killo states. The Valley league roller derby action takes place 50 weeks a year at a former auto impound lot in Sylmar, now owned by SFVRD, that’s been resurfaced with an acrylic coating to make it smooth enough for the old-fashioned quad skates the women wear. At 48, Gail Gomez, or “American Hurl Doll,” who is a film production accountant, is the league’s oldest member. “We get all walks of life here,” she says. “We have a Ph.D., authors, nurses, lawyers, a civil engineer.” Gomez’s teammate Shannon Ashworth or “Fearless Bueller,” a professional photographer who shoots all the SFVRD team portraits, has been playing for six years. The 35-year-old previously studied martial arts but started at zero with roller derby, learning to skate with the West Coast Derby Knockouts in Ventura. “When I first got started, I just thought it was fun. But later it was the community that kept me coming back,” she says. “It’s really inspiring. It’s very much a sisterhood. There are teams everywhere—all over the world.” Although women’s flat-track derby may fly under many people’s radar, it is a fast-growing international sport. Regulated by the 11-year-old nonprofit Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA, pronounced “Woofdah”), member leagues now number 378, growing from just 50 in 2005. The newest inductees hail from Paris, Tampere [Finland], and Dresden and Hamburg, Germany. As WFTDA’s site says, “Skaters

are ‘normal’ during the day. Roller derby is our escape from day-today life and our opportunity to embrace a tougher, edgier side of ourselves. When you step into the rink, your derby alter ego takes over.” WFTDA’s motto is “Real. Strong. Athletic. Revolutionary”—which is a pretty fair description of the sport. One thing that makes it unique is that, unlike any other current women’s competitive sport, contemporary flat-track derby began as exclusively female and not as an offshoot of a men’s sport. This time, it’s the men’s leagues that are the afterthought. Today’s roller derby got its start in 2001 in Austin, with the Texas Rollergirls. The sport’s breakout year was 2006, when A&E aired a reality show about the Austin league called Rollergirls. The following year, Maggie Mayhem (IRL Shauna Cross) published her memoir Derby Girl, which was the basis for Drew Barrymore’s 2009 film Whip It. Killo worked on the movie and says that it portrays the culture of derby sisterhood with authenticity. “On a scale of 1 to 10, it’s probably a 7.5,” she says. The bar to entry is fairly low in roller derby, which helps explain its growing popularity. Bouts can be held anywhere there are patches of asphalt. And unlike ice hockey or triathlon that require hundreds or thousands of dollars of investment in equipment, roller-derby gear can cost as little as $150: skates; knee, elbow and wrist guards, a helmet, and a mouth guard. Monthly SFVRD dues are $65 and include the opportunity to practice at the Lot at least three days a week. But new recruits, dubbed “Fresh Meat,” don’t owe monthly dues until they’re sure they want to join; they pay $10 per training session and
ourventurablvd.com
can borrow the needed equipment. How dangerous is it? Probably not as risky as you think. “It’s like any sport that you play,” says Killo. “People get hurt. But we train to do it safely and we have rules.” There are regulations against throwing elbows, hitting low, pushing, tripping and fighting. Old-time derby “clotheslining,” where teammates hold hands to upend an opponent, is off limits. In fact, the penalty box is one of the busiest zones during bouts, since there are seven referees watching players at all times and they are generous in handing out sanctions. Paramedics stand by at all bouts. Do women get injured? Yes. Broken wrists and ankles are the most common mishaps, especially among the “Freshies,” the nickname for the Fresh Meat girls. Even though she’s a top-level, A-Team player, Gomez recently needed stitches to close a sliced eye socket after another skater fell and kicked her in the face. Still, she has no plans to quit. “It’s addicting,” she says. “Roller derby fits me. I’m not afraid of physical contact.” SFVRD is currently ranked 90th out of the 378 leagues, right behind the Undead Bettys of Antioch, California and the Roc City Roller Derby crew of Rochester, New York. The #1 spot is held by the 13-year-old Gotham Girls Roller Derby of New York City, who are five-time WFTDA world champions. (LA’s 10-year-old Angel City Derby Girls is ranked #5.) The 2016 championship bouts are set for November 4-6 in Portland, Oregon, with the Rose City Rollers as the host team. The last day’s bouts are scheduled to stream live on ESPN3, which is a measure of just how powerful the derby sisterhood really is.

alk into the sprawling, one-story home of Steve and Orit Srour and it’s not the least bit surprising that it is stunning. Steve’s a successful local builder and Orit’s an accomplished interior designer. Combining their professional talents eight years ago, the Srours started AJS Construction and Design. Their philosophy is simple: creating aesthetically refined spaces that maintain a sense of comfort and hominess—an approach they also wanted to take when building their own home. After living in Toluca Woods with their three kids—Jonathan (14), Celine (12) and Shylee (7)—they decided the time was right. The one caveat was staying in the same area. “Toluca Lake just has that neighborhood feel. It’s like Mayberry,” shares Orit, who moved to the Valley from Israel with her family as a child. When they laid eyes on the property that sits on a coveted corner lot, they instantly knew it was “the one.” “It was the light, the way it came in from every direction. The sunlight from the east and the west just flooded the entire house. I knew I could do something really spectacular here,” recalls Orit. But when it came to negotiating the sale, things got complicated. Mary Ling, the owner, had raised her two daughters, successful journalists Laura and Lisa Ling, in the California ranch-style house. When she put it on the market a few years back, the asking price was more than the

FOCAL POINTS Orit tends to go for one “wow” item per room. Clockwise from top: in the kitchen it’s the charcoal-hued backsplash; in the dining room, a handblown glass chandelier by Lindsay Adalman; and in a child’s bathroom, Walker Zanger’s handpainted ceramic tiles, inspired by Italian textiles and Moroccan mosaics.

SPIN CYCLE While most homeowners don’t do much to the laundry room, Orit took another approach. “Because it is so central (off a hallway to the childrens’ wing), I decided to incorporate the color theme of the house. My kids are trained. They come home from school and immediately put their shoes and backpacks in there.”

Srours wanted to pay. “We couldn’t agree on the terms. Six months passed and I came back and knocked on Mary’s door. She still had her heart set on selling it to our family so we were able to work together to negotiate down the price,” Steve remembers. As soon as the Srours took ownership, they worked at lightning speed, taking the 1931 structure down to the studs and then increasing square footage from 2,700 to 4,700 square feet. “I took time off from work in construction to solely focus on this project for my family,” says Steve, an Encino native. The layout of the space was one of the most important details, according to Orit. She was adamant about creating a kids’ wing with an area to study and hang out with friends. Leading to the kids’ bedrooms is a wide hallway that accommodates their desks, as well as built-in cabinets for art materials. One of the most striking features is the steel and glass doors that are strategically placed throughout the structure. It took six drafts “to get it right,” shares Orit. “They bring classicism to the house and I wanted that—mixed with an industrial feel. Plus, they mimic the windows.” At the center of the home is an expansive kitchen that flows into a living room. Another popular gathering spot; a TV room with a sectional sofa.
ourventurablvd.com
“These days the trend is to do the great room where all of the rooms are together but I like the coziness and separation of the TV room from the kitchen. You can close off the doors if you want and have your own space,” says Orit. The interiors have a mid-century modern vibe that aims to be minimalistic and elegant. Only organic materials are used—from the oakwood floors to the refined look of the marble and limestone surfaces. The combination of the natural materials gives the entire space a warm and earthy feel. “I love a neutral backdrop. I weave taupes, ivories and beiges throughout the house so it remains consistent.” Pops of color come from art, as well as the bold tile accents strategically placed throughout the space. One of them is the super-sized kitchen backsplash. The dramatic centerpiece is made up of charcoal-hued, brickshaped tiles from Waterworks, which extend to the top of the 9 1/2-foot ceiling. “We’ve always wanted a house we could entertain in,” says Steve, adding, “It’s not about the square footage; it’s about the feeling of the home, it’s about how you put it together so everyone feels a part of it.” And indeed, watching the Srours scurrying about their charming property—it’s mission accomplished.

DAWN OF A NEW DOCTOR It’s not enough just to look good anymore. Most of us want to feel good. And for many, regenerative medicine—with its integrative approach—seems to be the answer. D
r. Prudence Hall, director and founder of The Hall Center in Santa Monica, just can’t wait to start using the center’s brand-new “consciousness portal”—her description for a technology called VibraSound, which according to its website uses music for relaxation and inspiration. The patient lies on a “vibrotactile mattress” that sends music as vibration to the body. A visual display device transmits music as light pulsations to the eyes. Headphones send music to the ears. Dr. Hall describes it as a “fun way to start to change how our brain is wired.” VibraSound is just one of many offerings that distinguishes The Hall Center—a self-described regenerative medicine clinic—from a traditional practice. Another new, alternate technology: the Thyroflex, which uses a reflex hammer attached to a computer to diagnose thyroid imbalances. The diagnosis is based on reflex speed in a forearm muscle (used as an adjunct to more traditional blood and ultrasound tests). Or how about IV therapies and high-frequency radio waves for detoxifying, or chelation therapy aimed at cleansing toxic heavy metals from the bloodstream? Dr. Hall’s practice offers these treatments and more—along with hormone replacement therapy, dietary and lifestyle counseling, energy healers and a “health coaching concierge” to bring all the elements together. Most patients opt for the center’s Core Program. It begins with a daylong visit that takes patients through various stations that address hormone balance, GI tract health, thyroid health and other issues. Trained as a gynecologist, Dr. Hall started her practice with all women patients but says that now 35% of her patients are men. Patients also consult Dr. Hall’s colleague, Dr. Nikki ArguinzoniGil, a doctor of naturopathic medicine who is licensed to practice in California and Washington. Also on staff is patient coordinator Susanna Barry, a self-described holistic healer and teacher of heartcentered wisdom who offers guidance based on her studies of Vedic astrology, ayurveda and tantra. Cost? Get out your credit card: $2,500 for that first day (insurance plans may cover some tests and treatments). There are usually two follow-up consultations within three months and annual follow-ups. Cost-conscious patients may seek consultation on just one element of the program, such as hormone balance or digestive problems. Dr. Hall’s work has drawn much media attention, including TV interviews with Dr. Oz on Oprah and Suzanne Somers, a celebrity patient who interviewed Dr. Hall on her TV show. Walk into the center, and you’ll feel like you’ve arrived at a highend spa retreat with exposed brick, glowing wood floors, overstuffed furniture and exotic artifacts. While waiting, patients can sample a glass of “gem water” from a large glass carafe containing a vial of semi-precious stones thought to render the water more alkaline. There’s a shop filled with books, gifts, and natural health and beauty products. An aesthetics room may be used for company meetings as well as meditation, yoga or other pathways to fulfillment. Is this a doctor’s office of the future? After all, Prudence Hall is a graduate of USC’s prestigious Keck School of Medicine—not a New Age healer. Or is The Hall Center actually more of a relaxing visit to a day spa than the best place for an annual physical? And really, is there any reason why a medical practice can’t be all of these things? Dr. Hall’s practice—as well as many others in the LA area—offers treatment blending multiple medical traditions. Call it regenerative medicine or integrative practice—many doctors are borrowing from Eastern medicine, using alternative treatments and tools and bringing nutrition into the diagnostic picture. And it’s no surprise that it happens first in California, observes Dr. Michael Hirt, a Harvard-trained physician and founder of The
ourventurablvd.com
Center for Integrative Medicine in Tarzana. “I think California has always been, for many decades now, on the cutting edge of health,” Dr. Hirt says. “California has maintained itself as the health leader, a health experimenter, breaking into new markets.” “People are looking to take their health to another level,” he adds. “And since we’re a very populous state, there are very many people who are willing to put down some of their hard-earned capital to make their health better using natural means.” THE GOAL Okay, Californians are game to try almost anything, but what exactly are they looking for? Baby boomers heading into their 60s and Generation-Xers facing their 40s and 50s want to feel younger. They want to be stronger and more productive. Mid-lifers can no longer count on lifelong job security that ends with a fat pension and a gold watch—they’re launching new businesses and careers. Nurse practitioner Lauren Evans, 29, works with Dr. Miguel Gonzalez in his integrative practice in Thousand Oaks. “For the most part, people complain about being tired. My #1 complaint is fatigue,” Lauren says. “I really think a big part of that is our lifestyle, particularly in Los Angeles. People in the TV and film industry are always talking about long hours. They’re really stressed.” Patients are also really demanding. “Most people tend to come in and say: ‘What can I do right now? I only have a two-hour time block,’” Lauren observes. Those patients are most attracted to IV therapies, receiving various intravenous “cocktails” containing amino acids and/or vitamins for quick relief.
“I think California has always been, for many decades now, on the cutting edge of health... Dawn of a New Doctor
The clinic has started administering such therapies by injection for people who don’t have time to spend an hour on an IV. Dr. Gonzalez also offers treatment with EVOX biofeedback technology, which Lauren describes as a guided meditation using the patient’s own voice to “reframe the subconscious” to break through barriers to better health. The stereotype of the LA woman seeking eternal youth through plastic surgery seems to be falling by the wayside in favor of those more concerned with feeling less exhausted. These women hope that dietary changes, hormone replacement and supplements might bring back that youthful glow—but beauty is no longer the main motivator. Dr. Hall says she has no problem with aesthetic procedures. The Hall Center offers nonsurgical face and body treatments using micro-current technology and “micro-needling” to stimulate the skin to regenerate. But “I never start there,” she insists. “Really what we do is beauty from the inside. It’s that energy, that feminine radiance. They could be 250 pounds and 80 years old— they just shine. They shimmer.” She acknowledges that most patients seek a sort of regeneration. They’re tired. They’re depressed. Maybe they’ve gained weight or lost their sex drive. Maybe they just don’t feel like themselves anymore. Most of her female patients are between the ages of 40 and 60, but some younger women come in with similar concerns. Dr. Hall makes bold claims, saying bioidentical (plant- or animalderived, not synthetic) hormones can reverse early dementia, prevent 50% of heart attacks in women and decrease breast cancer by 50%. She says older men on testosterone-replacement therapy can “build as much muscle as a 20-year-old.” Dr. Hall adds that alarming information about hormone replacement increasing the risk of cancer and stroke only applies to synthetic hormones. “I’ve thought about this: I don’t think it’s our chronological age [that’s the problem],” she says. “I feel like I’m 30. I think as long as we keep away diseases and keep ourselves healthy, then we are unlimited. We have an unlimited life span. We can be 100 and still contributing. And that’s part of longevity … happy people tend to live 10 years longer.” Underscoring her point, Dr. Hall is 65 and looks about 20 years younger. One can’t help but think: Maybe this is just the way 65 is supposed to look. A BELIEVER Tamara King-Patten, 51, laughingly describes herself as a “Jesus freak.” But Tamara also believes in Dr. Prudence Hall and her colleagues at The Hall Center. Tamara did not know what to expect when she walked into The Hall Center for the first time about two years ago. She only knew that she was desperate to feel better. For years she’d been visiting specialists who couldn’t find anything wrong with her. She describes her former physician as brilliant but working in a medical facility with limited resources. Heading into menopause, she was frightened things were only going to get worse. “I was not even close to being optimal. I was barely functioning,” she says. Tamara sought self-help books about health, including Suzanne Somers’ I’m Too Young For This! The Natural Hormone Solution to Enjoy Perimenopause, with a foreword by Dr. Hall. She says The Hall Center represented a “whole other world.” Today Tamara bubbles with zest for life. She also quotes a whole glossary of new medical terms for the source of mysterious ailments that had plagued her throughout her life. She credits it all to Dr. Hall and “Dr. Nikki” (Arguinzoni-Gil). Tamara’s previous physician had already introduced her to a

And that’s part of longevity… happy people tend to live 10 years longer.” bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). But she says The Hall Center diagnosed a host of other problems that needed to be solved for the hormone treatment to be effective. Tamara says she took a turn for the worse on BHRT until Dr. Nikki found a deficiency in GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid, a neurotransmitter) in her brain that needed to be addressed. The naturopath also discovered parasites and H. pylori bacteria affecting Tamara’s digestive tract, as well as diagnosing adrenal gland fatigue. Tamara, the product of a high-stress, alcoholic household, also suffered from anxiety and attention deficit issues before the hormone therapy, saying she was unable to focus well enough to read a book. She’s now on a low-glycemic, mostly organic diet that is dairyfree, gluten-free and sugar-free. “Today I am so hopeful. I have my life back,” she says. A DOUBTER Not everyone shares Tamara’s confidence in less traditional therapies. After recommendations from friends and reading glowing reviews on Yelp, a 49-year-old Manhattan Beach woman—who asked that her name not be used—tells us she sought a doctor in the South Bay area who promised “anti-aging” medicine, including natural hormone therapy, ozone therapy and IV therapies. “I’m almost 50, I have little kids and am constantly tired,” she says. She and her husband decided to visit the clinic together. Both were disappointed. She was suspicious when the doctor told her, “You could be more youthful” and wanted to bring her hormone levels—normal for her age—to levels found in much younger females. The doctor also wanted her to switch her thyroid medication from Synthroid (a man-made product) to a hormone derived from a pig’s ear. He recommended a low dose of testosterone to increase sex drive (not an uncommon therapy for women). Then there was the dizzying array of supplements and vitamins. Her husband was also put on testosterone therapy. “They want to beef up your levels to youth, completely out of the normal range—it’s ridiculous,” this patient says. Hundreds of dollars later, she and her husband have stopped seeing the South Bay doctor. She has quit taking testosterone but continues to take a low level of melatonin for insomnia (which she says works for her). The patient was so confused by everything on the treatment menu that she asked a physician she knew to offer his opinion on

some of the treatments recommended by the clinic. To put it mildly, he was unimpressed. In his opinion, many of the treatments were harmless but ineffective. Those include ozone therapy, micro-current devices and magnetic therapy. He calls the intravenous vitamin industry “a sideshow to science-based health care.” (He acknowledges that there is an “established medical role” for injectable vitamins but says they are not “an energy-boosting cure-all.”) The only treatment offered by the clinic that this doctor considers risky is testosterone therapy. He agrees with a recent caution from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that testosterone is approved only for men whose low levels of the hormone are caused by “certain medical conditions,” not by aging. He believes patients should consider the possibility that hormone treatment—bioidentical and synthetic— can raise the risk of cancer or stroke. Many doctors would disagree. RULE OF THUMB So maybe you’re not looking for the fountain of youth. But if there are safe options for looking and feeling better as you age and you can afford them, why not use them? At the same time, the choices can be so dizzying you may be tempted to give up, get yourself a generous slice of pie (ice cream optional) and then treat your fatigue with a nap. There are no easy answers, but Dr. Hirt suggests this rule of thumb: “In general, my philosophy is you don’t want to be the first in line or the last in line for any kind of medical therapy, and that applies to regenerative medicine as much as it applies to conventional medicine. I’m looking for the science. I want to know there’s something that’s been tested that I can rely on so I can explain to a patient how it’s supposed to work. Then I can use the science to monitor how it’s actually working.” Dr. Hirt has studied acupuncture, Chinese medicine and nutrition in order to expand his arsenal of therapies. He’s excited by experiments with stem cell therapy and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections that use the body’s own cells to stimulate the body to repair itself. “I think at this point Americans can expect, especially if they are doing regenerative medicine with cutting-edge doctors, that wear and tear can be corrected,” Dr. Hirt asserts. Meanwhile, Dr. Hall is planning to offer her program on a cruise ship where patients can go to focus on hormone balance, adrenal exhaustion and hypothyroidism, as well as emotional health and consciousness. “We’re looking at a lot of things [that] generate a lot of data. That data is going to start coming out of our center,” she enthuses. “We’re just going to blow this thing wide open.”

famous Californian, John Steinbeck, once said, “I’m in love with Montana. For other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection. But with Montana it is love. And it’s difficult to analyze love when you’re in it.” It’s hard to argue with Steinbeck’s feeling for Big Sky Country. As its nickname implies, a brilliant blue canopy envelops verdant hills and snow-caped mountains to create one stunning panorama—the kind Lewis and Clark encountered with astonishment during their early1800s expedition. In Montana you inhale, then exhale, repeat … and give permission for any stress or burden that might be holding you to back disappear with every release. The Resort at Paws Up might be one of the state’s most talked-about upscale ranch getaways. Positioned 35 minutes northeast of Missoula in Greenough—a little town nestled in the heart of the Blackfoot Valley—the rural property is a short connection flight and drive for visitors coming from the West Coast. The resort itself sits on a sprawling 37,000-acre authentic working cattle ranch, outfitted with both expansive private homes and sophisticated, safari-style luxury tents. Both the accommodations and common areas are scattered among the property to ensure privacy and undisturbed experience. The resort offers shuttles and convenient green Kia Souls to cruise around at leisure. Drawing from the agricultural wealth of Montana and the West, executive chef Ben Jones created refined, rustic ranch cuisine that articulately blends the most sophisticated culinary techniques with the freshest meats, produce and ingredients available. Huckleberries picked from the slopes of surrounding mountains might complement a breakfast of French toast and handmade sausage. Fresh Rocky Mountain trout sautéed with herbs might be paired with an exquisite Napa Valley chardonnay. “I believe that I should be able to make every guest smile,” says Chef Ben, “perhaps by the way I present my dishes or where I buy my vegetables or from the simple vapor from a dish that takes them back to a memory long lost. When I discovered that food was my creative outlet—as well as the most satisfying way to make people happy—it became my passion.” Enjoy the atmosphere at either of the two on-property restaurants, or soak up the rustic atmosphere at a lavish barbeque where guests may indulge in vintage wines as dinner sizzles nearby. Discretely nestled on the edge of an expansive meadow, Spa Town is a colony of pristine white tents stitched together by a wooden boardwalk, situated just past an authentic babbling brook and nestled among towering pines. The welcome tents feature full baths and showers, while individual treatment tents are fashioned with a lovely sink, a heated massage table and a view of the meadows spotted with horses. While Paws Up is open to the public in the late spring, summer and winter holiday season, there’s one special weekend each year reserved exclusively for women. The Cowgirl Spring Roundup, limited to 50 participants, is a three-day experience. It includes cowgirl skills workshops; a ranch photography clinic with award-winning Barbra Van Cleve; and conversations with freestyle champion Stacy Westfall, artist and costume designer Cathy Smith, and Dr. Eleanor Green—a pioneer in equine veterinary medicine. In between the mingling, guests will enjoy relaxing trail rides, wrangling, clay shooting, hiking, campfires and, of course, fine dining and amazing accommodations outfitted in Western chic. The Cowgirl Spring Roundup is scheduled for April 27-30, 2017 and open to women and girls ages 12 and older. For more, call 877-588-6783 or visit pawsup.com.

Which issues are unique to the working female?
“Being a woman means we have the power to reproduce and still own our own careers if we choose. We can manage the household along with having a paid job AND continue to be a good wife. That being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a full-time homemaker because that IS a full-time and over-time job!”
How do you remain true to yourself and find your own voice in your industry?
“In the industry of fashion, beauty and social media, it is so easy to get lost in a facade. Posting on all platforms your happy face and your fit body is great, but it is also important to use those platforms to show your true self and be brave enough to show the ‘undone’ side, which makes your audience connect with you better. Life is about being authentic. No matter what you do, staying true to yourself can be the one sole ingredient to keeping you honest and happy. If you are true to yourself, you are doing the right thing. So do everything you need to do to find your confidence. Surround yourself with friends and family who lift you up. Continue to be a student of the universe and never stop learning from everything and everyone you see around you. Three keywords to go by when trying to remain true to yourself: LOVE—Love yourself and love your life. TRUST—Trust your instincts and
92

create trusting relationships. COMMUNICATION— Speak your truth and speak it frequently.”
Give us a few tips for finding work/life balance. “Finding work/life balance is a skill that one can learn. Just like you would write an appointment down for your dentist, write down everything that you need to do. Consistency is key also. One very important tip is to always find time for yourself every day.”
What is your best piece of advice for a female entrepreneur just starting out?
“Pick something that you love to do and can see yourself doing every day without hesitation. Then write a business plan. Register the name, buy the website address, print all the necessary items such as business cards and address stickers, open a bank account, read lots about how to start up a business or entrepreneurship, find your team, know your numbers and dive in. Take risks and be fearless. Listen to your instincts.”
How would your clients describe you?
“I recently had a milestone birthday and asked my friends (some of whom are my clients) to describe me in one word on river rocks as a keepsake. Here are the words I read: Bubbly, Happy, Positive, Inspiring, Balanced, Caring, Beautiful Soul, Personification of Fabulousness, Passionate, Mindful, Beautiful, Joyful, Always with the Big Smile, Loving, Fun, Loyal Friend, Dedicated, Sweet, Admirable, Glam, Superwoman, Vivicious, Generous and Gets Sh*t Done! I would say those are pretty accurate descriptions of me. By no means am I perfect, but I am proud of who I am today and continue to practice being a better person every day.”
Tell us about your family.
“My birth family lives in Hong Kong, but we are lucky to be able to see each other at least once a year during Chinese New Year when we go skiing in Whistler. It has been our family tradition for the last 15 years of my life. My immediate family consists of my husband, Michael; my 5½-year-old son, Jean-Pierre; my 2½-yearold daughter, Joliette; and my 9-month-old identical twin girls, Dion and Dior. My chosen family, aka my good friends, are also very important to me. I make sure they know they are loved and that I appreciate them in my life.”

How do you remain true to yourself and find your own voice in your industry?
“I get to work at such a beautiful location on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, surrounded by amazing individuals who want to do their very best—taking care of our guests and each other. I have never considered this a job. I’m so thankful to get paid for doing something I absolutely love.”
“The key for me is to always do what you believe is right. Have a strong moral compass and surround yourself with mentors who you can give guidance, bounce ideas off of and tell you when you’re going down the wrong path. In our People Services team, we have a myriad of backgrounds and that has lent us to have different life experiences and perspectives. This has allowed for greater empathy to our associates based on our own life experiences as a single mom, a working mom, a recent college grad, one who is currently working on her degree, a survivor of domestic violence and an individual who lost both her parents at a very young age. Collectively we have used these experiences to connect on a more empathetic level with our associates.”
Do you have a professional support network that has contributed to your success?
“Having strong mentors who can guide you is very important to building a successful career. Sharing experiences and learning from stories of success and failure is incredibly valuable. It is important to have a network that will both challenge and support you.”
Give us a few tips for finding work/life balance.
“You have to carve out time for yourself. It’s so easy in our roles of taking care of associates and guests that you forget to take care of yourself. How does social media play into your business’ marketing strategy?
“We have seen traffic uptick on sites such as Glassdoor. The new applicant isn’t looking for just a job; they want to work for a company that has the same philosophies and ideologies as them. Terranea’s social media profiles allow applicants and potential guests alike to gain a quick insight based on comments, posts and reviews. We also launched TerraneaLife, a digital magazine that celebrates the California lifestyle and the culture of Terranea, by bringing to life the pillars of the resort: community, epicurean, environment, wellness and discovery.”
Why does your industry appeal to you?
What are some of the challenges you have encountered being a female in your industry? How have you overcome those challenges?
“The human resources field is predominantly female, but in an executive role in a hotel you are surrounded typically by males. Your ideas can be dismissed, especially how it can impact the organization financially. However, Terranea truly believes that our success comes from our associates, and therefore our core beliefs and strong culture of taking care of our staff make my job easier.”
How do you give back to your community?
“Terranea has a strong commitment to supporting our community. It is a key part of the resort’s mission, and we spearhead numerous initiatives collectively that focus on preserving the natural, cultural and historical integrity of this region. We have numerous charitable and nonprofit partnerships such as: Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Peninsula Education Foundation, Vistas for Children, YMCA, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Rainbow Services and more. What concern do you frequently hear from clients?
“That they want to be happy and have inner peace. Sadly, my most successful clients— even the millionaires—are not happy. Our world is going through turbulent times, and it’s seeping into our collective consciousness. It takes a lot of work and practice to stay positive and productive. I teach my clients life skills to navigate their inner psyche, so they can find tranquility within.”
Give us a few tips for finding work/life balance.
“It’s ALWAYS a challenge. I’m a mom (and the room-mom at my daughter’s school), a wife, I run a nonprofit and manage a coaching business. During the course of the year, I host various workshops. Each year my nonprofit hosts the Legacy Gala in Santa Monica with more than 300 attendees and well-known guest speakers. I host fundraisers at my home, I’m writing a travel memoir, I’m helping care for my father who is 86 years old, and somehow I manage a full social calendar. So my advice
would be to meditate each morning to get grounded. Look at your calendar and get familiar with your day before starting it and visualize it going well. Stretch several times throughout the day, drink water and get out in nature for at least five minutes a day. Know that it’s OK not to be perfect, and there is beauty in imperfection.”
What is your best piece of advice for a female entrepreneur just starting out?
“Trust your gut. Join communities. It’s impossible to make it in any business without the support and love from others. Also, you must give back and frame your business model on ‘How can I serve?’ instead of ‘How much will/can I make?’”
How do you give back to your community?
“I have a nonprofit called Whisper from Children’s Hearts Foundation that serves orphanages around the world, as well as kids in local communities. We take teams to communities all over the world to improve conditions in orphanages and build schools and homes. Our Legacy Gala highlights people doing life-changing work in the world, and we donate a minimum of $20,000 to an organization that is doing groundbreaking work. To attend the next Legacy Gala to be held at Casa Del Mar on Friday, March 17, go to our website, whispersfromchildrenshearts.org. I also do one or two mission trips a year with other nonprofits. than numbers, and I can say that 25 years later, I still feel the same. Truly getting to know and understand my clients over the years is how I define my success.”

As a family, we take our RV to local beaches and campgrounds a few times a year with friends. My husband races through the Porsche Owner’s Club, so we travel to different racetracks in California about eight times a year.”

Linda Grasso – Editor-in-Chief, Ventura Blvd
Robin Sanders – Senior Account Executive
“In general, as a cooking enthusiast, I get a kick out of the food-oriented stories; it’s an exciting time now in the Valley. And I love working on the home features. I’m a closeted Martha Stewart— peeking inside gorgeous homes is a thrill.”
“Finding new ways to expand our publications’ visibility and reach has been a challenge and adventure. 2016 has been filled with meeting new local business owners and providing them opportunities to connect with each other through Ventura Blvd’s multi-faceted platforms.”

Love the variety!”
Emily Stewart Baker – Partner & Brand Publisher
“Hands-down it’s the work we’re doing with Liquid I.V., which produces a premium hydration powder drink mix. They are quickly growing from an LA–area start–up into a national brand player with distribution at top retailers across the country. By creating content to effectively tell the Liquid I.V. story and then developing a marketing and media strategy to smartly communicate that content, Moon Tide Media has helped Liquid I.V. successfully launch in three regional markets in

“Working with Wendy Bond and our marketing team on Guaranty Escrow’s grand opening of their fourth location in Malaga Cove Plaza—so creative, festive and lots of celebrating!” “Being an integral part of our move to our new office space. It was exciting to see Moon Tide’s new home go from a shell of a space to the creative and collaborative work environment that will be our home for years to come.”
Elena Lacey – Senior Designer
“My favorite thing was working on GIFs and other social posts for national brands during the Olympics this year.”
Hannah Lee – Brand Publisher
“I’ve really enjoyed working with Chef’d. The home-delivery meal kit company came to us to create engaging content (for print and online distribution) to help build their food lifestyle brand. Creating a hybrid magazine-catalog and micro-content for their social platforms was

We’ve created a hefty brand book, launched a new website, executed regionally targeted paid social campaigns, brought on brand ambassadors, organized demos and events across the country, managed their organic social efforts, created an illustrated film, produced a documentary-style film—and we’ve only just begun.”

bundance is a Los Angeles-area specialty boutique catering to women sizes 12 and up. Owner Michele Varon started the business in 1998 after years of working in entertainment industry accounting.
Tell us about Abundance.
“Abundance is one of the very few upscale, independent, plus-size fashion boutiques in the entire United States. The purpose of Abundance is to help each woman gain confidence and feel empowered about herself exactly as she is. We help her choose a wardrobe that expresses her creative side and accentuates her positive qualities.”
How do you remain true to yourself and find your own voice in your industry?
“I buy what I like and what I think my customers like. I have a very specific aesthetic about what I will and won’t bring into my store. It has to be interesting. It has to have a style. I like it

What is your best piece of advice for a female entrepreneur just starting out?
“Don’t quit your job that pays the bills as you start on your new venture. It takes more time, energy and a lot of working capital to start and sustain a business. You may need that paycheck to fund your new business.
Keep a lot of money in the bank so you never have to worry about paying your employees or your vendors on time. Hire talented and dedicated women to be part of your team. Take chances, talk to others and get their opinions, and then do what you think is best for you and your business. Follow your passion and dreams. Be grateful.”
What question or concern do you frequently hear from clients?
“We are always hearing from our customers that it is hard to find clothing in their size that is fashionable, functional and comfortable, that expresses their personality. They don’t want to look like everyone else, and they don’t like the service and the items available in department stores. Our customers are looking for someone who understands them, understands their needs, understands their body shape and size and can help them create a wardrobe that works for them.”

r. Johannah Sohn is the Head of School for Adat Center for Education—a private Jewish Day School for children from infancy through sixth grade. She has worked in the field of Jewish education for close to 20 years and joined Adat Ari El in 2007.
How do you remain true to yourself and find your own voice in your industry?
“Given that an important tenet of our program is providing our students with applicable life skills, I can’t imagine approaching my work in any other way but through my authentic voice. Our program places a large emphasis on authentic, relevant work. Students are not learning for the sake of testing or ‘covering’ material. We are helping our students develop life skills, such as critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving.”
What is your educational philosophy? “I think it’s critical to adapt education to

the ever-changing world in which we live. I’m thrilled to be able to lead a school that embraces that philosophy, while still remaining true to our core values. Design Thinking as a foundational methodology is an ideal way to foster cognitive growth at every age. In the ECC it presents itself in the form of play and tactile learning, while in the elementary school years it can be seen through collaborative work, building, creating, incorporating technology and project-based learning.”
Why is Jewish education so important to you?
“What makes our brand of Jewish education so special is the added value of empathy integrated so seamlessly with Design Thinking. It is the why we are doing what we are doing, not just the what. The Jewish values embraced here at ADAT, combined with the Design Thinking process, help us gain a deeper understanding of the world around us and challenge us to make a difference.”
Do you have a professional support network that has contributed to your success?
“I do! I have been a part of a program through the Jewish Theological Seminary called the Day School Leadership Training Institute, which has provided me with an incredible network of colleagues and mentors who have all been guides and an unbelievable support. Of course, I am also incredibly grateful for the encouragement and support from the Adat Ari El community.”

“Like any other industry, real estate is everchanging and being a Realtor is far different now than even 10 years ago—although to me, the core principles of the industry remain the same. I believe it is the excellent customer service that I provide that has allowed me to build my business through referrals. My clients know that I will go the extra mile for them and that I will work hard to get them outstanding results.”
Give us a few tips for finding work/ life balance.
“It’s challenging as a mother of three to find balance between work and life. I’ve found that the best way to get close to balanced is to surround yourself with good support—both at home and in the workplace. In order to be successful in the field I live, eat and breathe real estate, just as I live, eat and breathe life and family, and all the enjoyment that comes with that too.”
What is your best piece of advice for a female entrepreneur just starting out?
“Be brave, confident, dedicated and strategic. Being an entrepreneur will allow you to take control of your life, your future and your destiny. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, and it’s not easy. You need to build your business, network, build a name for yourself that resonates with people, manage to pay the bills and do your best to stay in business year after year. These things can’t be achieved without confidence in yourself and your abilities, determination to forge through the tough times and envisioning (and then accomplishing) your goals.”
What would you like potential clients to know about you?
“Buying or selling any property can be a very stressful experience. In my role as broker, I help my clients navigate the complex arena by being completely hands-on from start to finish. In addition, my ability to creatively solve any complex situation that arises—coupled with my no-nonsense, straightforward style—helps pave the way for transactions to go as smoothly as possible.”

In 2014 she co-founded Valley International Prep with colleague Brad Koepenick. The school rebranded as iLEAD North Hollywood Learning Studios last summer.
How do you remain true to yourself and find your own voice in your industry?
“I came to school leadership via an unconventional path. I am indeed an industry outsider, as I didn’t arrive here through the degrees-ineducation/credentialing/years-in-classrooms route. I deeply respect all of my colleagues who traveled that path, but it wasn’t where

my journey took me. Accordingly, I find that I depend on the simplicity of speaking truth as I recognize and experience it. It’s really that simple. I tend to be vocal about my ideas, and I express them in my own down-to-earth fashion, which doesn’t always please everyone in any given room. Also, I make a point of remembering that our endeavor wouldn’t be realizing its tremendous success without the hard work and good wishes of our parent volunteers. They are any such organization’s life blood—any education leader should never forget this point.”
How does social media play into your school’s marketing strategy?
“Marketing a start-up charter school is a difficult, oftentimes mind-bending undertaking that requires around-the-clock dedication and a constant pursuit of creative thought and actions—as there are never enough paid staff and volunteers, and the marketing budget is a very limited one. Our school
was originally built on nothing but word-ofmouth to parents and kids generated through our Facebook posts, a dependency on our founding families’ sharing of those posts and old-fashioned, neighborhood-centered, guerrilla marketing, for which Brad Koepenick has become rather famous. Nowadays, as a newly developed independent study hybrid model, our rebranded iLEAD North Hollywood Learning Studios has tremendously benefitted from programmatic, cultural and financial support of iLEAD Schools. Nevertheless, our ultimate success is still very much dependent on how we continue to brand ourselves within social media.”

What concern do you frequently hear from clients?

“Parents often ask me questions about timing specific to an independent school education. The joy and purpose of learning is nurtured and reinforced at an early age—during critical, developmental years. It is here where important habits of mind are cultivated. Students learn how to think critically, wonder profoundly and take the academic risks required of learning.”
What do you like to do for fun, when you’re not at work?

It challenges me physically and emotionally and reminds me that who I am today is not the same person I was yesterday nor the person I will be tomorrow.”
Why are you passionate about the field of education?
“Educating a child is both the greatest privilege and responsibility. It is to dedicate your life to helping young minds and hearts foster their own passions. What’s the best way to select a real estate professional?
“Remember, you get what you pay for. Selecting an agent to be equally invested in the sale of your property is imperative. “Just because the house down the street sold a month ago at an alarming price doesn’t automatically make yours worth the same! Buyers and sellers are savvier than ever, conducting their homework months ahead of time and planning for the moves they are making. You cannot price your home at an inflated price to hope that you find that one uninformed buyer. The value of your home is what someone is willing to pay … that may work for or against you, and you never really know until you are on the market with massive exposure. The goal is to list the house in that sweet spot that brings interest and offers within the first 30 days. “If anyone who knows balancing work and life, it’s me! I am a mother of two beautiful children, and my husband is a stuntman who travels basically nine months out of the year. Let me tell you—it’s not easy, but it’s achievable. The key is to not let work run your life. Work is fun for me, and it’s my passion. I love making people feel good about themselves, but you also have to have a happy medium—and that is balancing your family and work. The key is: Don’t bring your work home with you. When you get home, devote your time to your family and yourself.”

So lots of exciting things happening and can’t wait for everyone to come and meet the whole crew at BeautyCan.”

COLEEN KIRNAN & RHONDA VILARDO Owners Tuscan Women Cook Calabasas 310-613-1477 tuscanwomencook.com
F
or more than 20 years Rhonda Vilardo worked as sales director for a national cosmetics company and Coleen Kirnan owned a commercial real estate firm before they joined together to purchase Tuscan Women Cook last year. Originally founded in 2000, Tuscan Women Cook provides an authentic immersion experience in the Tuscan countryside, including exclusive cooking classes taught by Tuscan women; private wine, cheese and olive oil tastings; and excursions throughout Tuscany including Montepulciano, Monticchiello, Pienza, Siena and Bagno Vignoni.
Tell us something unique about your business.
“Our cooking school is differentiated from other international cooking vacations because our classes are taught by the Italian nonnas (grandmothers)—the true chefs of authentic Italian fare. The local women of Tuscany share their techniques with our guests, including special

ingredients and family recipes. Each cooking class culminates with a mouthwatering lunch. Our classes are ideal for cooks at all experience levels. Also, our program is located within a medieval village with fewer than 600 residents; it is not a tourist destination. What we offer is a true, unique immersion experience.”
FAST FACT Tuscan Women Cook’s program takes place in an Italian medieval village, Montefollonico, located in an area of Tuscany that produces great wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Chianti.
Share a bit about the classes.
“There is as much or as little actual hands-on experience as the individual wants. You can
come and get elbow-deep in pasta, or you can come and watch, simply enjoying the fruits of everyone’s labors.”
Other unique features of the experience?
“We tour Siena on market day, which is largely for locals. Our guide has a doctorate in Siennese history and shares the rich history of that city. Also, one of our cooking classes is at a familyowned farm, which was converted to a B&B and is taught by three generations of female cooks.”
Describe your clients.
“Men and women of all ages—from all over the world. It’s surprising how many men come with their spouses and end up enjoying the experience much more than they anticipated. We have single travelers, book, golf and wine clubs, reunions, graduates—you name it. There are also some serious wine and food aficionados. And regardless of the mix of the group, we always see friendships forged.”

U
S Cryotherapy in Studio City provides Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC)—a modality for the treatment of pain and inflammation that exposes the skin to subzero temperatures. Co-owners Patty Reid and Susan Sagheb are long-time neighbors and friends who started their US Cryotherapy franchise in January of this year.
Tell us something unique about your business.
“The US Cryotherapy systems are the only all non-liquid nitrogen Cryotherapy systems in the U.S. The systems are cold enough to provide a therapeutic benefit by dropping the whole body skin temperature 30º to 45º during a two- to three-minute treatment session. The extreme cold causes the release of endorphins, while the enhanced circulation activity decreases inflammation by clearing toxins and metabolic waste with a supply of oxygen and nutrient-enriched blood to stimu-

late cellular regeneration (faster healing).”
Do you have a professional support network that has contributed to your success?
“Our franchisors have been extremely helpful in expanding our knowledge and continually educating us in the benefits of Whole Body Cryotherapy. Their passion for the product, commitment to quality and advanced technology have inspired us to share the benefits with other people.”
FAST FACT Patty and Susan have the only all-femaleowned US Cryotherapy franchise.
How does social media play into your business’ marketing strategy?
“We know that today most everyone gets their
information via social media. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube help us connect with our clients to get the word out about WBC. We also hope to encourage our clients to share their experiences with us on social media—we think the best marketing comes from happy clients telling others their stories.”
What would you like potential clients to know about you?
“Cold therapy seems like a relatively new therapy but it’s actually been used for more than 30 years in Europe and Japan. Currently it receives a lot of attention due to elite athletes and actors proclaiming the benefits of muscle-recovery and the positive effects on visible signs of aging. But it’s not just for the ultra-active; it’s also for those seeking an alternative to support energy levels, reduce inflammation, relieve pain and improve sleep. The most exciting thing about it is how the treatment makes you feel. You’ll leave feeling energized—not cold.”

indy Goodman is a veteran admissions professional, with more than 12 years experience in independent schools, a BA in psychology, master’s degree in human development and a certification in early childhood education and administration. She recently joined Westmark School as Director of Admissions, working with students grades 2–12 with dyslexia, ADHD and other language-based learning differences.
FAST FACT Students attend Westmark School from more than 60 different zip codes throughout Los Angeles.

5461 Louise Avenue, Encino 818-986-5045 westmarkschool.org at every grade level to discover their strengths, passions and affinities. Our unique, multi-modal, research-based pedagogy, along with the integrated use of assistive and educational technologies, allows our students to access the curriculum and find success. Our experiential and service learning programs—combined with competitive athletics and arts programs—offer diverse opportunities for enrichment.”
What’s the best way you’ve discovered to find new business leads?
“By being the best at what you do … by listening to the needs of your prospective clients … and by using your expertise to respond to those needs. Our best referrals come from current parents, educational therapists and other professionals whose students have discovered their strengths and reached success once they arrive at Westmark. We nurture those relationships, provide professional development opportunities when appropriate and offer parent education programs.”
What would you like potential parents and students to know about you?
“I love the field of admissions. One of the greatest things about being an admissions director is that you get to meet so many wonderful families. My experience and passion go hand-inhand with Westmark’s approach to individualized education—building on each child’s unique strengths. I am passionate about proper school placement and fit, no matter what the grade. In many cases I continue to have a relationship with families well beyond their graduation from the school.”
What do you love about your school?
“One of the things that attracted me so much to Westmark is that we teach students who, due to their unique learning styles, have not been fully served in other school settings. They discover— often for the first time—that they CAN learn, they ARE smart and they CAN be successful. Once they embrace their differences and advocate for themselves, they can reach for success—in the classroom and in life.”

Kasey started the business in 2014.
How do you remain true to yourself and find your own voice in your industry?
“Prior to owning my own business, I worked in PR and in marketing, so I understand the importance of knowing ‘your brand.’ When I started KJI, I was taking a giant gamble on myself, so I went into it with a clear picture of what type of business I wanted to build and what type of founder I wanted to be. That has helped me immensely—from knowing what type of team I need to build to what opportunities to say yes to and which to politely decline.”

“Since I love what I do so much, I’m still trying to find my work/life balance. It’s such a passion of mine so the lines can easily blur, but I’m making more of a conscious effort to turn off work at least one day a week. The nice thing about my business is I have flexibility for my ‘weekend,’ and that’s really helpful.”
What is your best piece of advice for a female entrepreneur just starting out?
“Regardless of the area of your expertise, you have to be really hungry and able to do anything to get your name out there and show your stuff. Had I been a little more picky about clients, rates or barter opportunities in the beginning, I probably wouldn’t have the clientele I have now.”

Dreams Reimagined A single mother contends with saying goodbye to her college-bound child. Written by Kathleen Laccinole | Illustrated by Christine Georgiades
M
y marriage was spent dreaming of a baby—my perfect, nuclear family. I painted a buttery-yellow nursery, added crystal pulls to my childhood dresser, stenciled the rocking chair where I would breast-feed my child. If you build it, she will come … She didn’t. After seven years of infertility treatments, I got pregnant. Then came nine months of misery. Not the fairy tale “let’s do yoga and photo shoots with my magnificent belly” pregnancy. Instead, I got three trimesters of rampant vomiting; wore the same cheap dress every day; and showered maybe twice. When overly ripe with child, despondent and wretched, my mother told me, “I know you want her out now, but in three months you’ll want to shove her back in.” Mom was right: My fantasy baby was born with colic; my marriage fell apart, as did my life. Three became two and my dreams shifted to new ones. Now I imagined all the things we would do together; what I would become as a mother, a woman, a writer—my daughter by my side. The next year, I dipped my toe back into the dating pool. Nine months later my son arrived. (It happens.) Two again became three— thousands of miles, stratospheres from the life I’d envisioned. My daughter excelled in school, music, and life in general. Still, at home it felt like her colic lasted well into her 16th year. And since I could not “shove her back in,” I began to quietly entertain the idea of her leaving for college. But I blinked, she turned 18, and somewhere along the way we’d become friends. We shopped, talked about boys, got mani-pedis. Then POOF! She was accepted to USC. And so began the countdown … I started looking backwards, at all the things we hadn’t done: road trips, Ireland, Africa. I never French-braided her hair, made chocolate chip pancakes, pierced her ears. I never met Mr. Right. She never saw me in love, wouldn’t be the

flower girl at my wedding. She deserved better. But does life ever turn out the way we envision in 10-year-old dreams? My emotions are fractured. I try to rein in scattered merrygo-round ponies, search for hidden answers in sock drawers. If college is a good thing, why do I feel so bad? Suddenly, every moment is precious. I hold on tight. And when she’s cranky, I endure because the stomping feet will leave a ghostly silence in a few short weeks. Three will become two … then eventually one. I resist the urge to buy a cat—or seven. I shift my focus to what we did do: our non-nuclear life—biking in Paris, cooking classes in Barcelona, watching a Rolling Stones concert from the rooftop of our hotel in Rome. We made magic. I feel a tingly excitement for my daughter and all she will become. I worry about what can go wrong and long for what can go right. And when I drop her off at the collegiate city that holds the next phase of her magnificent life, I will drive away, lumpy throat, like yesterday’s first day of kindergarten. Still, I will always be her mother. And like I endured childbirth, I will endure this. It might require corpulent Netflix viewing, extra martinis, and yes—God forbid—a cat. Because no matter how hard it hurt to push that baby out, this will hurt more. But I will survive. Like my mom did. And her mother before. Because my mom says I will. And Mom is always right. Kathleen Laccinole is a freelance writer and regular contributor to ESME.com. She resides in Sherman Oaks with her son—and so far— no cat.
