I eat a diet filled with healthy grains, veggies and proteins that includes red meat (although I do limit it to once a week). I tend to eschew fads and special diets—anything that is temporary. For me, life is a marathon, not a sprint. That said, to each his own. If something works for you, go for it. As the people on the following pages demonstrate, there are so many ways to achieve health and fitness goals. Good health also pertains to the mind and soul. And when I watch this busy executive doing it in the morning, I am always taken aback. I admire the way he is being mindful about his mental health. I’d like to get on the bandwagon. But quite frankly it hasn’t taken. I simply can’t stop my mind from wandering. But I plan to keep trying. Hope you find things in this issue you plan to try, too. —Linda Grasso, Editor in Chief

Warren Stout, who operates two martial arts studios in Pittsburgh, is another longtime friend and competitor who has trained extensively with Williams. “I make two distinctions: great coach, great teacher,” he says. “They’re almost two different things in my mind. Shawn is both. He’s a great teacher and is recognized for his broad technical knowledge. He is also extremely articulate at conveying that knowledge.” Although the taut and trim athlete and teacher still travels a great deal, spending time in New York City, he makes Southern California his home now. He and wife Annie, a fashion photographer, live near Studio City. His Renzo Gracie affiliate studio in Koreatown near Hancock Park, which opened in 2010, has about 6,000 square feet, 450 members and eight instructors. The new location in Pasadena, scheduled to open in April, came about because a lot of families who come to the Koreatown location are based there. It just happens to be a hotbed of martial arts activity. Who knew? “We already have members who commute from there, so it only made sense,” he explains. “We wanted to spread the brand.” Shawn is all-American but mystical, even-

tion to the correct way of doing things. That’s one of the reasons why he loves working with youngsters—because they’re reminders of the same qualities of martial arts that drew him to become a devotee. “Martial arts are so good for kids,” Williams says. “I tell parents that as long as they understand that it’s important to keep kids motivated and to stick with it, eventually they’ll see the benefits.” Master Po may not have articulated it this way, but if you have a great teacher and a passion for a pursuit, you can get pretty far in this world. “Discipline,” Shawn states. “It bled into everything else I did in life.” n

Shawn’s Fitness & Health Regimen Workout routine As a coach, my goal is to maintain a good level of fitness, flexibility and skill. This consists of Brazilian jiu-jitsu training once a day—generally five to six days per week—a wrestling session once a week, a boxing/kickboxing session once a week and weight training twice a week (focused on primary lifts such as deadlifts, squats and occasional Olympic lifts, followed by a circuit of accessory exercises that target my core, back, shoulders and chest).

Diet I try to eat sensibly—usually a high-quality protein (fish or chicken), a plethora of vegetables and some fruit. I’ve found that if I begin to feel “flat,” a sweet potato gives me a nice boost of energy. I aim to follow a very loose Paleo-style diet.

Guilty pleasure My mom’s “puppy chow” is insanely good. It is similar to muddy buddies, but it’s almost an insult to compare the two … another level!

Ultimate fitness goal My goal is to push myself to see what my body is capable of now that I have passed the 40 mark. Getting back into competition is definitely on the agenda after I heal from a few injuries.

Trailblazer At the age of 77, City of Hope cancer researcher Leslie Bernstein is still leading the pack with dramatic findings that are changing the way we think about and treat the disease. ILLUSTRATED BY CHRISTINE GEORGIADES

Dr. Leslie Bernstein is one of the most accomplished and highly regarded cancer epidemiologists in the world today. The PhD has won nearly every award she could receive in her field and been honored numerous times for teaching and mentoring junior scientists. And she continues to work full time, while also being active in the lives of her 11 grandchildren. Here Dr. Bernstein shares some of her findings—particularly in regards to breast cancer—with VB editor-in-chief Linda Grasso.

18

You headed up a noteworthy research project that identified a link between exercise and breast cancer. How was the study conducted? In 1983 I began to study risk factors for breast cancer in women who were 40 years or younger when diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. I received the grant from the National Cancer Institute and conducted the study from 1984 to 1989. Then I began to analyze the data.

“Now more than 80 studies have evaluated the association between exercise and breast cancer worldwide—and results consistently show a decrease in risk for women who exercise, confirming the result we had so long ago.”

FOR MOUNTAIN BIKERS, THE VALLEY OFFERS A SURPRISINGLY EXTENSIVE MYRIAD OF TRAILS, SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE FROM TIMID BEGINNERS TO ACCOMPLISHED THRILL SEEKERS. WRITTEN BY ANNE M. RUSSELL PHOTOGRAPHED BY BRYCE LOWE-WHITE

I

get asked a lot if I jump off cliffs on my bike. I don’t. People who’ve seen the death-defying stunts of Red Bull Rampage’s elite riders or maybe watched Olympic competition get the impression that mountain biking is a high-risk,

adrenaline-fueled sport practiced only by skinny, young dudes. But on Valley trails, you’ll see every kind of mountain biker—young and old, male and female, fat and thin. Sure there are some adrenaline junkies in full body armor bombing high-skill trails like Hummingbird off Rocky Peak, but you’re more likely to encounter recreational riders who are in it for camaraderie, fun and love of nature. Although it’s impossible to get an accurate count of the number of riders in the Valley, “The growth in the sport is obvious when you look at the high school groups,” says Steve Messer, president of the nonprofit Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association (CORBA). Messer notes that in 2009 the SoCal High School Cycling League, which oversees secondary school mountain bike clubs, had 70 participants; today it has 1,000. “It bodes well for the future of mountain biking,” he says. THE ATTRACTION “As an intense person, mountain biking gives me a sense of calm,” says Wendy Engelberg, who has been riding for 11 years and is one of the founders of Girlz Gone Riding (GGR), a 1,500-member women’s mountain bike club. Her favorite local spot is the part of the Backbone Trail that runs through Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park in Tarzana. Liz Kurtz, a GGR member and mountain bike veteran with 27 years of riding, echoes Engelberg’s sentiment, saying, “I love the challenge and how it helps me focus. I’m AD/HD and I love the adventure; you can go so many places on a mountain bike.” Kimberly Cofield, co-founder with Engelberg of GGR, says her favorite trail is the recently completed Backbone Trail off Encinal Canyon Road in Malibu. “Beyond the camaraderie, I love being out in nature and getting away from the stress,” she shares. Kurtz says her preferred trail system is in Cheseboro Canyon Park in Agoura Hills. Christian Soleta, a rider with 17 years experience, including enduro (downhill-oriented endurance) racing, says, “I’ve made more friends riding than anywhere else. My best friends are my riding buddies.” Soleta says his top-rated trail is the technical downhill El Prieto single track above La Canada Flintridge. NAVIGATING THE TRAILS Almost all of the Valley’s trails fall within the boundaries of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA), which is administered by the National Park Service (NPS). NPS senior communication fellow Zach Behrens says area trails that are open to mountain bikers comprise 53% of the 538 miles of SMMNRA’s public trails across its 155,000 acres.

that “inner” voice we sometimes like to ignore. The Minnesota native says outdoor activities have always been a part of his life. “The city, Edina, where I grew up was like every 1980s John Hughes movie—all-American. Sports were a huge part of the daily culture. My family and I were always on the lakes sailing, windsurfing, ice-skating, and playing tennis and biking in the summertime.” In 1996 Ryan headed to LA to attend the University of Southern California to study fine art and communications. There was also another major draw. “A big part of moving out here was the chance to get into surfing. You have to want to learn because it’s a big commitment, but it’s worth every moment. It provides a reset for me. I feel like a new person after I’ve been in the water.” Although Ryan has a family, wife Alexis, a jewelry designer, 8-year-old Riley and 4-year-old River, he still manages to make time to surf in Malibu or Venice every two weeks. During the week, Ryan’s busy at work as a motion graphic designer for TV and film. “I love the creative part of my career, but it’s very sedentary sitting at my computer all day. It’s second nature to stay active, and when I don’t get a chance I start to feel it.” On the weekends he dives into the outdoors with his family—hiking, skateboarding or playing tennis. “I think people make the mistake thinking they have to kill themselves in order to get a good workout. Reproductive Health, Fertility & Surgical Associates of California, the Fertility Institutes, HRC Fertility and the Los Angeles Reproductive Center. The U.S.’s relative lack of regulations on reproductive services make it a magnet for wealthy medical tourists from more restrictive countries, such as Australia and Japan, or countries where socialized medicine sets treatment limits, such as Canada. And since China eliminated its one-child policy, there has been a boom in older Chinese couples traveling to Southern California for help adding to their families. Seeking medical intervention for conceiving a child means getting sucked into a tornado of medical acronyms, starting with ART itself. Quickly following that are specific ART service options with names like IUI, IVF and PGS. Tamara*, a 37-year-old photographer who has been trying for five years to conceive with her husband of seven years, remembers her first encounter with a fertility doctor as being disturbing and confusing. “He was using all these big words we didn’t understand and he talked a mile a minute. It felt like a science project. That’s not how I want to make a baby.” She did one unsuccessful treatment cycle at that clinic—which cost her $18,000. Unhappy with that outcome, Tamara then went, she says,

can have multiple causes and multiple solutions. “The problem is the unknown,” Dr. Shamonki says. “It’s important to have an ongoing conversation about considering other options.” BABYMAKING 3.0 Especially for women over 40, the options Dr. Shamonki mentions include implanting an embryo produced from a donor egg (fresh or frozen) fertilized with the male partner’s sperm or even using an embryo left over from someone else’s IVF. In that case, of course, the baby born from the procedure doesn’t share any DNA with either parent. Lisa,* a 40-year-old data analyst, suffered through two unsuccessful IUIs and a false pregnancy before deciding to push ahead with the much more costly IVF. Speaking for herself and her husband, she says, “We just figured it was the last chance, so if it was going to be $18,000, we were just going to go for it.” Plus unlike 90% of ART clients, Lisa was fortunate to have health insurance that covered the cost of some of the procedures and all of the drugs. She ended up with four embryos from her own eggs on the first IVF cycle: two girls and two boys. She and her husband decided to implant one of the female embryos and now

for the children. “I can’t remember the last triplets we had,” Dr. Feinman says happily. Now when a multiple birth results from IVF, it’s usually because the fertilized egg split in half naturally, resulting in identical twins. Another ART method that has seen significant improvement is egg storage. “Freezing

techniques are excellent now,” says Dr. Shamonki. “You don’t lose eggs the way you used to. You can keep eggs and embryos frozen indefinitely.” Dr. Feinman concurs, noting that the oldest embryo he has successfully implanted was 13 years old. Of course, no one knows how long “indefinitely” really is, but Dr. Feinman jokes that the freezers “would probably survive a nuclear war.” He adds, “The tanks are quite solid. There’s no known time limit for cryopreserved embryos.” Egg freezing (cryopreservation) is a growing business for fertility clinics, as women increasingly get the message that fertility is relatively

Says Dr. Shamonki, “I don’t want to put the woman at risk. But even if you take pregnancy out of the equation because they’re using a surrogate, there is a ceiling in terms of human longevity.” Dr. Shamonki cites the famous case of the 66-year-old Spanish woman, Maria del Carmen Bousada, who gave birth in 2006 after IVF treatment at a clinic on Los Angeles’ Westside. She died less than three years later, leaving her twin boys motherless. “You have to have concern for the unborn child,” he says. n

Wherever it parks, people are lining up to buy inventive fare like bee pollen-infused smoothies, perfectly crisp kale chips and Hawaiian pineapple. The truck is the brainchild of 33-year-old Diana Lazarte, who insists she is not a chef. “I have never been interested in being a chef. I have a great love of food,” the Sherman Oaks resident explains. Her menu is comprised of mostly healthy snacks, juices and smoothies. But it also includes incredibly

no refined cane sugars or additives. Running a food truck was not Diana’s original plan. After doing the New York City rat race thing and working in business for six years, the Queens native got “burned out.” She enjoyed making healthy smoothies and snacks and saw an opportunity. “People kept telling me, ‘Your kale chips are so great! They taste homemade, but better.’ That made me laugh so hard.” Looking for a way to become her own boss, Diana started researching. She visited local smoothie shops, followed blogs and podcasts, and read business books. “I just fully invested myself into every aspect of health. Then I tailored the ingredients into a smoothie that tastes amazing.” All smoothies contain a superfood, which adheres to Diana’s general philosophy that “When you feed your body nutrient-packed foods, you don’t crash and overeat or feel tired. Your body is nourished and energized—ready to tackle anything.” One of her most popular smoothies is the BeeBerry Energizer, which has local, live bee pollen, aimed at reducing allergies and strengthening the immune system. The big juice seller is the Emerald Cleanser, which has low sugar content and is made with fennel and kale. She refers to fennel as her star ingredient, saying, “I love the flavor. It kind of tastes like licorice but brings a nice balance to the drink without having to add so much fruit.” Fennel has other attributes; it is packed with potassium, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Diana’s mom is Peruvian and she still has family in Peru. Diana visited there as a child. “I was always so surprised by the different fruits and ingredients used there. Peruvian cuisine is so complex. My favorite ice cream is lucuma and I’ve only had it in Peru. I now use lucuma powder in my acai bowls. I use other ingredients as well, including maca and Peruvian cacao.” Diana, who plowed her life savings into buying the truck, says she loves what she does but admits managing a food truck has its challenges. “We have run out of generator fuel, all our blenders have failed at once for 15 minutes, with 100 people waiting. Keeping a calm smile and cracking some jokes goes a long way,” she chuckles. To find out where D’s Super Blends is parked on any given day, follow them on Twitter @dsuperblends. Power Pizza FORMER PR MAVEN GAIL BECKER TURNS ENTREPRENEUR WITH HER NEW GLUTEN-FREE PIZZA LINE, CAULIPOWER. WRITTEN BY LINDA GRASSO PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANE O’DONNELL

F

or years, as the president of strategic partnerships at the PR powerhouse agency Edelman, Gail Becker used her savvy marketing skills to help people and companies promote their brands. Now she is putting that know-how into getting the word out about her own brand—the nutritious, gluten-free frozen pizza line, Caulipower.

Although the pizzas are made without gluten, they are not being

marketed as a gluten-free product. “Those so often just don’t taste great. Caulipower pizzas have a delicious taste. There are no fillers or cheese in the crust. We use brown rice flour. Plus, there are only 2 grams of sugar per piece—the lowest amount of any on the market.” Gail left the corporate world about a year ago after her father passed away. “He had come to this country with nothing and left with everything: a business, a home and a daughter who loved him. Not long after his death, I recognized this incredible change in me. I increasingly had less patience for things that seemed meaningless and an increasing desire for something more meaningful. I realized that I wanted to be an entrepreneur just like he was … and to try and do some good along the way,” she shares. The inspiration for Caulipower came from her two sons, Josh, 19, and Eli, 14. Both were diagnosed with Celiac disease at a young age, and for years Gail had been buying pre-packaged, gluten-free food. “I began to notice how unhealthy it typically is for you—filled with more fat, sugar and calories. Frustrated with what I could find, I caught on to the cauliflower craze that was sweeping the internet.” Packed with vitamins C and D, cauliflower is considered by some to be a “superfood.” One night she made a cauliflower-based pizza crust and the boys raved about it. “They asked for it again the following week and, to be honest, I said no. Making it took too much time and effort after coming home from a long day at work, but I promised them that I would buy it somewhere. I looked everywhere but couldn’t find it.” A light bulb went off. Gail commissioned some research and began the painstaking process of creating her food line. “We tested countless recipes to come up with the perfect cauliflower crust. I was really taken by the idea of something that was born on the internet and created because people wanted it and couldn’t find it in the marketplace.” The line, with four different varieties of frozen pizzas, is now available at Whole Foods and Bristol Farms as well as on Amazon. Gail is also fulfilling her mission to give back. Caulipower supports One Sun Donor, a nonprofit aimed at connecting kids to whole food. A portion of Caulipower’s proceeds goes toward helping create vegetable gardens in underserved schools across the country. It’s been a ton of work, and Gail admits, “I’ve kind of let myself go for the past year or so. I’ve just really been holed up.” But she has no regrets. “I always used to tell people, the day you stop learning is the day you need to leave. I love what I’m doing now because I learn something new every day. It’s exhilarating.” n

Gail’s Fitness & Health Regimen Workout routine I go to the gym every day—except for when I travel. I love classes with hand weights, though if I have a good idea that pops in my head mid-class, I have been known to sneak off to my phone and jot it down. If I can’t make class times work, a good session on the elliptical with empowering music does the trick. “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen is a particular favorite.

Diet I try to eat a lot of vegetables and love turning favorite foods into “better for you” options—like zucchini noodles, which are a regular dinner staple. I try to avoid anything fried.

Guilty pleasure Popcorn. There are two places that I can’t do without it. One is the movies; the other is Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Those who have been there know precisely what I mean.

Health Goal Living a long life is a great goal, but I want to be able to make the most out of it. I lost one parent to old age and one to illness. I have seen the difference. I want to be independent and travel the world in life 3.0. Right now, though, I’m very happy with the 2.0 version.

Fitness Goal I would love to be able to take part in a marathon in some way—even if it’s just walking.

Sleep Routine Sleeping has never been my superpower. I am a very early riser, usually about 4:30 to 5 a.m. In all honesty, I probably average about six hours a night, which is OK, but I would love to be able to sleep more. It’s something I am working on. There is no TV in the bedroom and when the lights go off, so does the phone.

Brian says he too will be fitness-minded later in life. “I anticipate evolving my process to address aging. I had a cause, a goal, a kayak and three months to get ready. September 4 was the kind of Sunday morning when the wind and the marine layer cause Manhattan Beach residents to stay indoors way past brunch time. I schlepped more than 160 pounds of kayak and gear to water’s edge while the rest of MB was still asleep. My main concern was takeoffs and landings in surf zones. I never practiced a beach launch with a fully loaded kayak before. That was a separate course at UCLA, for which I was too cheap to sign up. I had my sprayskirt around the cockpit, my personal floatation device on, my marine radio tuned to the Coast Guard emergency channel and all of my equipment in place. The waves were already licking the stern of the yak. My eyes focused on the water, counting the waves and the time lapse between them. The possibility of a shameful spill one minute into the journey made me extra tense and alert. The adrenaline rush kept me focused on the approaching surf and my hands firmly on the paddle as I was doing my best to keep the yak perpendicular to the oncoming break, while enduring endless gallons of salt water in my face.

PHOTOGRAPHED BY KEVIN GILLIGAN AND ARCOIRISEXPLORER.ORG

The next 10 days were a delicious cocktail of perfectly balanced Zen and adrenaline with a twist of doing good. One minute I was enjoying the serenity of glassy waters under a friendly layer of ocean mist, while at other times I was paddling for my life—navigating between sharp rock gardens and menacing waves. I spent my nights on various beaches, at times listening to soothing waves or to rowdy yells of overjoyed Pokemon hunters. I learned to move with the ocean. I learned to respect tide cycles. I woke with the sun and went to sleep with the moon. I learned the names of towns between here and Tijuana. I appreciated my space and learned to appreciate the proximity of others. It gave me joy to know that true DIY adventures still exist, and sometimes they may just start three blocks from your house. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE.

“I started practice in 2013. It is a large, multispecialty practice that provides comprehensive musculoskeletal care from head to toe. There are 12 doctors covering the entire spectrum of orthopaedics. The office staff is superb, kind and patient. We refer patients to each other within the group and constantly communicate and collaborate to provide the best comprehensive care for our patients.”

TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THE GROWTH OF YOUR PRACTICE?

“My practice has flourished and is thriving due to recommendations from prior patients and word-of-mouth.”

56

VENTURA BLVD HEALTH 2017

“My practice has flourished and is thriving due to recommendations from prior patients and word-of-mouth. I try to provide an overall positive experience for each patient. I take ample time to listen to their needs and work with them to figure out the solution to their problem. If it is a problem outside of my scope of practice, I always try to connect them with the appropriate doctor to best address their individual needs. It is the experience and relationship that we develop with our patients that keeps them coming back and referring me to their family and friends.”

WHAT QUALITY IS IMPORTANT WHEN IT COMES TO CARING FOR PATIENTS? “An important quality of a good physician is taking the time to listen to your patients. Oftentimes the physician-patient interaction is rushed, and small details can be missed. These details can have a significant influence on the treatment path for that specific patient. I strive to listen to my patients and work with them to devise a treatment strategy fit for their needs.”

HOW DO YOU EDUCATE YOUR CLIENTS TO TAKE GOOD CARE OF THEMSELVES? “Listen to your body. I try to educate patients on being aware and mindful of what their body is telling them. Proper warmup before activity and appropriate rest after to allow the body to recover and heal are essential. Injury prevention and rehabilitation are important parts of my treatment algorithm.”

GOOD TIMES Outside work, I enjoy spending time with my family. In the summer we love to take walks along Ventura Boulevard and stop at one of the local ice cream spots. We frequent the farmers market on Sunday mornings.

AREA OF EXPERTISE I specialize in sports medicine and injuries of the shoulder, hip and knee. I focus on minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques for joint preservation. I take a conservative approach and tailor each patient’s treatment plan based on the type of injury and their lifestyle. When surgery is necessary, I utilize new, precise and innovative techniques such as robotic joint replacement and surgical approaches that get people up and moving the same day of surgery.

TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR PRACTICE’S GROWTH?

Minimally invasive spine surgery Lumbar microdiscectomy Lumbar laminectomy Lumbar fusion Lumbar disc replacement Cervical disc replacement Cervical discectomy and fusion Cervical decompression Revision cervical and lumbar procedures

“We offer some of the most minimally invasive procedures possible that help minimize scarring, incision size and postoperative pain.”

“Our approach to helping patients navigate through the treatment process—starting with the initial consult and gradually progressing through different modes of treatment. We try to maximize our patients’ improvement without surgery. And when surgery is inevitable, we provide our patients with the time necessary to discuss the plan and any questions they may have regarding the preparation, day of surgery and post-operative recovery process. We are there throughout the entire process and see patients periodically after surgery to evaluate their progression through the recovery.”

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER THAT ARE UNIQUE?

“Often patients ask about their recovery and ability to return to work. We offer some of the most minimally invasive procedures possible that help minimize scarring, incision size and postoperative pain. This allows our patients to return to their active lifestyle and work as quickly as possible. Patients often go home the same day and have the ability to recover in the comfort of their own home. We also help coordinate postoperative physical therapy, both at home and at a facility. My regimen consists of a gradual and supervised progression in activities. This helps build goals and advance physical activity tailored to each individual patient and their own personal physical activity goals.”

through low back and abdominal muscles. I have often recommended yoga and Pilates as a great way to maximize core strength through body resistance exercises, stretching and all done with minimal to low impact maneuvers. Weight loss can also provide a tremendous amount of relief for low back pain. As little as 10 pounds of weight reduction can reduce a significant amount of low back stress.

AREA OF EXPERTISE Minimally invasive spine surgery and same-day surgery is the area we focus on for our patients. Often the procedures we perform can be outpatient and allow patients to recover in the comfort of their own home. As a boardcertified spine surgeon, I have performed many cervical and lumbar surgeries in this manner and find that it is the best way to optimize patient outcome.

WHAT’S MOST REWARDING ABOUT YOUR WORK?

“By far, the most rewarding aspect of what I do is helping people return to their life after surgery. Often patients are so debilitated by their pain due to their condition that they can’t work or enjoy activities with their family. Seeing a patient through the process of their first consultation and progressing them through the treatment process—whether it be surgical or not—is highly rewarding.”

WISE WORDS Some of the best ways a patient can avoid back problems is exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Some simple activities are core-strengthening activities to provide stability to the lumbar spine

Regenerative Injection Options: Stem Cell – This is the most powerful treatment and best for severe injuries, advanced arthritis or failed surgeries. Stem cells can become new cells. They can become new cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints, etc. PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) – This treatment is great for stimulating healing without surgery. Prolotherapy – A natural treatment for those nagging injuries that do not need surgery. All injections are performed using ultrasound so the physician can see exactly where to inject.

“Colleagues often refer themselves, family members and patients who have been suffering with pain and function for many years. It is most rewarding to not only provide pain relief and restore function but solve the patient’s problem and help them heal.”

HOW DO YOU ASSIST YOUR PATIENTS IN NAVIGATING THE HEALTH INSURANCE INDUSTRY?

“We remind patients that our medical recommendations are based on what will get them better, not limited to what their insurance will cover. For this reason, we offer transparent, affordable cash prices. Our programs are perfectly suited for Medicare patients. Private insurance is less predictable, so we encourage patients to avoid contracts that require preauthorization before we can treat them.”

MEMORABLE MOMENT

TELL US ABOUT A COMPLEX CHALLENGE YOU HELPED A PATIENT SOLVE.

The most memorable moments of my career have been the times that I have spent on medical missions in South America and local neighborhoods. I have had the opportunity to care for children with facial disfigurements. I was able to save lives by removing and reconstructing facial cancers. These have been the most gratifying experiences of my life. I look forward to my next visit to underprivileged parts of the world.

Thyroid surgery Head and neck cancer Voice and throat disorders Endoscopic sinus surgery Nasal breathing surgery Non-surgical sinus clearing (balloon) Rhinoplasty, nasal cosmetic surgery Eyelid and brow surgery Minimally invasive facial rejuvenation Facial plastic surgery (facelift) Botox and fillers Ears surgery

“A woman who had undergone several previous nasal cosmetic surgeries came to me with a severe nasal deformity and nasal obstruction. I had to devise an innovative surgery using bone grafting and ear cartilage to fully reconstruct her nose. The surgery was very extensive and took about six hours. After surgery, not only was she elated with the cosmetic outcome, but she was able to breath without any restrictions. In another challenging case, I cared for a man with a six-month history of ear blockage. He had been examined by several otolaryngologists who had not identified any problems. I was able to find a cancer in the back of his nasal passage. He received radiation therapy and has remained alive and healthy over the last seven years.”

WHAT SKILL IS MOST IMPORTANT WHEN CARING FOR PATIENTS?

“I feel confident that my experience in minimally invasive facial surgery will serve my patients well.”

“After 15 years in practice, I have developed a great rapport with my patients. I have been meticulous in developing empathy and an ability to understand my patients’ concerns. I pride myself in my ability to communicate will all my patients and to put them at ease during a very stressful situation. In addition, I have put great emphasis and effort on refining my surgical skills and yet treating each patient as a vulnerable human being. I continue to study and take courses in my field to be able to offer cutting-edge treatment for all my patients.”

AREA OF EXPERTISE I trained for 11 years at UCLA School of Medicine, including residency and facial plastics fellowship. I also served as assistant clinical professor at UCLA. I am double-boarded in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and otolaryngology. I am very comfortable with all aspects of facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. I excel in rhinoplasty and truly enjoy facial rejuvenation. I feel confident that my experience in minimally invasive facial surgery will serve my patients well.

They are hesitant to apply for that job or go on that date. Frequently, after their rhinoplasty, they show more confidence, more comfort in daily interactions and general increased satisfaction in their life.

“Our procedures are designed with aesthetics in mind, respecting beauty as well as function.”

“Evo started as a concept practice in 2011 where the fusion of technology, medicine and humanities served as the core principles of everything we created. Our procedures are designed with aesthetics in mind, respecting beauty as well as function. The practice is designed around the principles of UX (User Experience), offering our patients concierge medicine without the premium cost. Evo is about finding excellence in every aspect of how we serve our patients.”

HOW DOES EVO IMPROVE HEALTH CARE?

“As evo doctors, we come to work with the credo that being a good doctor is our minimum deliverable. We go to medical school, complete residency and begin practice with the expectation that we should be excellent practitioners of our craft. Settling for good results isn’t good enough for us. So we lead by example, implementing the most advanced, modern technologies for our patients regardless of the cost. This is what we committed to when we took our oath.”

BEFORE & AFTER The evofoot bunion correction is an advanced method that allows the patient to remain ambulatory during the recovery process. The average recovery involves a two-week period of wearing a surgical shoe, then a two-week period of tennis shoes. The incisions are hidden on the side and closed plastic-surgically.

WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT EVO PROCEDURES?

“In 2001 Dr. Sadrieh merged plastic surgical techniques with foot surgery and created Aesthetic Foot Surgery. Evo bunion correction and hammertoe correction set a new standard for short recovery, cosmetic results and functional surgery of the foot.”

WISE WORDS In our speciality, if it doesn’t look good, it’s probably going to be a problem in the future! What that means is that in the foot, most structural problems present as visually problematic areas as well. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK IN THE VALLEY?

I grew up in the Valley. I went to Chatsworth High School before going to college and medical school. My whole family is here. After completing my residency and specialty training at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), I moved to Las Vegas for a year to practice. I very quickly realized how much I missed my friends and family—and decided to move back to the community where I grew up. Not a day goes by that I don’t see a patient whom I somehow am connected to. It’s a real thrill to take care of people in the community where I was born and raised.

MUST-TRY 80% of people will suffer a major episode of back pain and/or sciatica during their lifetime. Surgery is usually not required, and these symptoms will resolve with rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatories. Sometimes the symptoms don’t resolve with these modalities. In these cases many patients will benefit from epidural steroid injections or nerve ablations.

AREA OF EXPERTISE My expertise is the diagnosis and treatment of conditions causing pain. An emphasis is on conditions of the spine such as spinal stenosis and herniated discs, which can cause back pain and/or sciatica.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE.

“Clear Health Advisors was borne organically. Two women with vastly different backgrounds came together with one mission: to help people to get the best care possible. Trained in preventive medicine, Val had been working for more than a decade as a medical journalist, conducting in-depth research on a wide variety of conditions. Her work often led her to the foremost leading specialists in these areas. Byrdie had been working as a literary agent for more than 20 years at Creative Artists Agency, during which time she was forced to face our health care system up close and personal. While advocating came naturally to her, the process of trying to procure the best care for herself and her family was eye-opening.”

DESCRIBE YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF CARE.

“Our philosophy of care touches people emotionally and resonates with them intellectually.”

“At Clear Health Advisors, our philosophy of care touches people emotionally and resonates with them intellectually. We are the ultimate clientcentric service provider. We are committed to getting clients to the most appropriate physicians to ensure the very best possible care.”

WHAT ABOUT THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS NOT WORKING?

“Our practice is unique in that we do not ‘treat’ patients. Instead, we take control of and oversee their complex health care needs. Nearly everything in the health care system is simply harder than it has to be. We work to make it easier. A lack of communication and coordination within the health care system is one of biggest problems that we see. But it is a problem that can be remedied—and one we can help with.”

TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR PRACTICE’S GROWTH?

“The daunting complexity of our health care system is making the need for a third party that acts solely on the patient’s behalf imperative. Currently, there is virtually no way for patients to accurately evaluate physician quality; the data to do so is extremely limited

70

VENTURA BLVD HEALTH 2017

and difficult to access. It’s also complicated for patients to determine if they’re been diagnosed correctly and even more difficult for them to know if they’re receiving state-of-the-art treatment. Clear Health eliminates some of this guesswork, providing patients with clear, comprehensive and objective medical guidance and case management.”

WISE WORDS If you don’t know what your options are, you don’t have any.

AREA OF EXPERTISE We work with clients suffering from medically complex conditions or potentially life-threatening diagnoses. We collect and organize all of their medical records and identify the most appropriate specialist (or team of specialists) for them to consult with. We then work to educate our clients about treatment options, allowing them to make the most informed decisions possible.

MEMORABLE MOMENT Honestly, there are so many stories we’d love to share. Because of issues surrounding patient privacy, we will simply say that every client is unique and every experience is gratifying, regardless of the ultimate outcome.

We also believe that it’s important to take this message out into the community. In making regular visits to nursery and elementary schools, parenting groups and community organizations, we promote the importance of health and teach proper oral care techniques to parents and children.

“Lasky Pediatric Dental Group’s goal is to make both parents and children feel comfortable and safe. Our families enjoy that our waiting area is homelike and serene. Parents are always included in the decision-making process, and we make sure they understand all treatment options and recommendations. Children are examined where they are most receptive: on their parent’s lap, on the floor or by our toy box. Lastly, parents appreciate being able to call or email us between visits.”

They are also experienced in treating children with special needs—ranging from fearful or high-anxiety cases to those with more complex mental and physical issues. WISE WORDS Parents should look for their child’s “dental home” before or soon after their baby is born or if they move to a new neighborhood. We have found that it is comforting for parents to identify a pediatric dentist before there may be a medical need or emergency. Hopefully, we won’t need to see your child until their first visit on or around their first birthday. But if a need arises, we are available 24/7.

Celebrating 30 years in dentistry was a career highlight of mine. My staff and I had a great celebration of my 30 years in practice in May 2014. We hosted a continuing education course for my esteemed colleagues at North Ranch Country Club. My special guest speaker was Dr. Steven Sadowsky, a mentor and long-time friend. I am grateful to have worked with and learned from so many talented individuals who have instilled the quality dentistry we provide as taught to us at the U.S.C. School of Dentistry.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER THAT ARE DIFFERENT OR UNIQUE?

“Our dedicated team is working hard to educate and change public behaviors and address the importance of oral health as it relates to a patient’s overall health. By making good oral health a priority, one can reduce many risk factors for developing other general health problems. We believe a healthy mouth leads to a healthy body so you can enjoy a healthy life for years to come.” – Dr. Manny Fernandez

VENTURA BLVD HEALTH 2017

“In addition to traditional services (crowns, implants, Invisalign, etc.), we see children with sleep disorders whose symptoms include bed-wetting, ADD, restless sleep, snoring and lack of focus in school. We are very excited that the Healthy Start program gives us a way to help these children before the conditions develop into adult conditions.”

“Current research shows that your dental health is important to your overall health. Infections, plaque build-up, tooth loss and gum disease are just the start of your problems. The bacteria in your mouth can find its way into your bloodstream and create all kinds of inflammatory issues throughout your body. At Complete Health Dentistry we are all about creating an open dialogue with our patient’s primary physician and other specialists to make sure that they have the best treatment and solutions for any situation that arises.”

HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY?

“Dr. Fernandez and Dr. Beard have been honored to support the local community for several decades with their attention to the health of each patient, Free Dentistry Days, Give Back A Smile, serving meals to the homeless and many community sponsorships.”

“We are so excited to be the first dentists in Woodland Hills and the surrounding greater Los Angeles area to offer the Healthy Start program for children and young teens. Proper oral development leads to straighter teeth and easier breathing! We have seen this treatment help with many childhood conditions such as bed-wetting, restless sleep, poor focus and attentiveness and more. While treating youngsters with sleep-related issues, these removable appliances guide the incoming teeth to improve proper jaw alignment, which can simplify any future orthodontic treatment.” – Dr. Bruce F. Beard

AREAS OF CONTINUING EDUCATION We strive to be relevant and up-to-date on all areas of dentistry. This year we focused on cosmetic smile enhancements (implants, veneers, porcelains, bleaching techniques), sleep disordered breathing (especially in children, where early treatment has so many long term benefits) and, of course, TMJ headache therapy. Our team is dedicated to providing the latest materials and techniques for our patients.

IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHICH FILLER TO USE ON A PARTICULAR PATIENT?

We specialize in cosmetic injectables—including those aimed at reducing wrinkles (Botox, Dysport and Xeomin) and fillers such as Juvederm Plus, Ultra Plus, Voluma, Volbella, Restylane Lyft, Silk, Refyne, Defyne, Sculptra, Belotero and Radiesse. We also offer microneedling, which generates new elastin and collagen. And we use Novathreads, which are dissolvable threads—essentially sutures—that are placed under the skin to lift a particular area.

WHAT IS THE EXPERIENCE OF A FIRST-TIME PATIENT LIKE?

YOUR PHILOSOPHY

“It’s all about providing people with the best possible appearance so they are as confident as they can possibly be.”

80

VENTURA BLVD HEALTH 2017

“Yes. Fillers differ in thickness, cohesiveness, longevity, water retention, reversibility, viscosity and their ability to stimulate collagen. So at Cosmetic Injectables, we give product choice a lot of thought. We take time to discuss the options and the desired result with patients so we can ultimately choose the right filler that’s also within their budget.”

“First-timers are usually a bit anxious, which is understandable! They want to make sure results will look natural. We choose the proper pain management, depending on a patient’s level of sensitivity, which filler and location, and the longevity that is desired.”

DO YOU TREAT MANY MEN?

“We have seen a huge spike in the number of men coming to our office this past year. I think injectables are becoming more acceptable in our society, so men feel less intimidated. Tired, angry and sad expressions can impact perceptions at the workplace (and ultimately income), as well as social relationships. While outdated techniques might result in a somewhat feminine look, in recent years we have learned how to enhance the male facial features to result in a more masculine, rejuvenated look.”

Everything in moderation. Just as we do our nails and hair and choose the proper attire, we want to avoid overdoing it. Injectables in modest amounts can maintain a “well-kept” and natural appearance. Most of my clients want to look less tired, sad or angry. The most reassuring factor is that if a patient chooses a reversible procedure (most fillers fall in this category) and they don’t like the results, we can essentially “undo” them with a simple injection.

PATIENT CONCERNS Patients typically don’t know how much down time there will be. They wonder if there will be adverse affects with injectables, and they’re worried about possible risks. They also worry whether they are being overly vain. We can relate to these fears—it is natural to be concerned. And it is important to talk it through. We spend as much time as necessary to understand what the patient is trying to achieve. We discuss the various methods available to reach each goal.
