EDITOR’S LETTER | LINDA GRASSO

On the Subject of Men...

W

orking on the MEN’S issue was a unique challenge. In all candor, I was a bit intimidated. It is our first MEN’S issue and, being a bit of a “girl’s girl,” I worried about delivering the goods. Even though I live in a house with three men, I’m constantly amazed by our inherent differences. I do not arrange my day around various sporting events—televised or live. I do not enjoy watching things being blown up or view violence as good old entertainment. I’ll hiss at my family, “This is ridiculous!” and the trio will hiss back (with a tone that borders on contempt), “Quiet! It’s part of the storyline!” I know I’m making some generalizations here, but you get my drift. At the end of the day, I wanted to be sure the issue struck a chord with men, yet was also an entertaining read for women. One of the first shoots we did was the Dog-on-it! pictorial on page 52 where we feature guys and their beloved pets. The men are all interesting and fun—and involved in showbiz in different ways. Their dogs, which include rescues and pure breeds, could have hosted a variety show of their own, considering their big personalities. The combinations made for some funny moments as the VB team went about trying to capture the essence of their relationships, at locations across the Valley. Roy Disney’s white ball of fur was hilarious showing off jumping tricks at the family’s estate in Toluca Lake. And along the bustling sidewalk tables at Sweet Butter Café, Kevin Fonteyne’s rescue flat-out refused to be photographed with a bowl of water. The puppy seemed to delight in knocking it over, making a loud clanging noise and attracting attention. Getting back to “the shop” and looking at the images with the VB team—which includes both men and women—and hearing their peals of laughter—buoyed my confidence. I felt like I’d gotten off to a good start and could carry that playful, interesting vibe throughout the magazine. I’m sure, with your letters and emails (like the ones on the next page), you’ll let me know if I hit my mark. Linda Grasso Editor-in-Chief

THIS &THAT

Closet full of emotional baggage? By clinging to items that are no longer useful you are subconsciously holding yourself in the past.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR In reference to the article titled “Fantastical Feast” written by Joshua Lurie appearing in the April issue of Ventura Blvd, I would like to correct an error regarding Firenze Osteria. Firenze Osteria never “shuttered.” Rather, the stakeholders in Firenze Osteria entered into an agreement with Manny Marroquin to close and rebrand Firenze Osteria as Verse, a restaurant and music venue. The fact is Verse has yet to open almost three years later. Had the stakeholders not made the decision to rebrand with Mr. Marroquin, Firenze Osteria would still be open. Thank you, Karen Cease (investor in Firenze Osteria) We loved dining at Firenze Osteria over the years and had always wondered what happened. By using the word “shuttered,” we simply meant it was closed for business. It wasn’t a comment on the restaurant’s future. Thank you for solving the mystery. We always appreciate reader feedback.

I’m so impressed with how far Ventura Blvd has come and how gorgeous it is. The attention to detail, great writing and photography and interesting storylines really sets you apart. Sandra Gelfat Woodland Hills

I have been shooting fashion, advertising, lifestyle, celebrity and travel photography for the past twenty years. I am married to wardrobe stylist and designer, Sybile Kohn. We both love the idea of having a magazine that is part of our community. Robert Deutschman Colfax Meadows

OOPS, WE GOOFED… In the April issue of VB, in the SEEN section, we erroneously referred to Country Ridge Estates in Calabasas as being developed by The Agency Real Estate. It was actually developed by Williams Homes; it is represented by The Agency. Also in that issue, we did an article on the twin brothers, actors Matthew and Benjamin Royer. We’d like to clarify that the show in which they both have roles, Best Friends Whenever, airs on the Disney Channel and replays on Netflix.

THE ULTIMATE FACIAL When Minnie Driver was asked to be in People’s annual issue of women wearing no makeup, she made sure facialist Angela Caglia was available. “I told Minnie, ‘Of course I’ll give you a facial before the shoot!’” Angela laughs. Chances are the actress got the signature “Bel Air Facial,” aimed at lifting and firming. The treatment includes an oxygen infusion with stem cell serums and LED light therapy. “LED therapy started with NASA. They’d give LED lights to the astronauts so if they got a cut they could heal quickly,” explains Angela. After spending several years at Ole Henriksen in Beverly Hills, Angela opened up shop at the Beverly Glen Center last year. She also kicked off her own eponymous skin care line which is ph balanced, organic, and free of parabens, gluten, sulfates, dyes and artificial fragrance. All the products have innovative twists. Lavender cleansing water has “micelles—tiny oil molecules suspended in soft water that attract makeup and dirt and oil without depleting moisture,” says Angela. A “soufflé” moisturizer contains goat’s milk, known for its anti-inflammatory and brightening properties. The vitamin C serum has antioxidants, including meadowfoam seed and CoQ10—both work to help defend skin against free radicals. For more, go to angelacaglia.com

SPA IT WITH KIDS Anyone with little ones knows how hard it is to carve out time for yourself. Heck, just getting out the door can be a challenge on some days. Esthetician Trina Renea says that is precisely why she opened Spa Le La this past spring in Tujunga Village. “As parents, we’re always caring for others. Sometimes you need to care for yourself. Why not have a spa where you don’t have to hire a babysitter or feel guilty as a working parent about leaving your child on a Saturday?” Trina explains. Spa Le La offers complimentary on-site childcare (treatment prices are competitive) and a full menu of services. There is also a deep tub to soak in silence, a state-of-the-art infrared sauna for eliminating toxins and luxurious beds for those who long for—yes, even dream of—an uninterrupted nap. The soothing scent of sandalwood candles immediately causes one to downshift upon arrival. At check-in, parents are given a vibrating buzzer in case they are really needed. Then they’re served a complimentary herbal tea or glass of wine and shuttled down a quiet hallway to receive treatments. Kids are settled into a soundproof playroom, overseen by CPR-certified childcare professionals. Added bonus: Afterwards, with your “om” in full swing, take your child next door to Sweet Rose Creamery to rebond over a cone. For more, go to spalela.com

FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T LIKE TMI Tinder App

The Dating Game The good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to looking for that someone special— plus candid comments by two anonymous singles. ILLUSTRATED BY CHRISTINE

GEORGIADES

When all you want is the basics about a person. Set preferences like age range and distance, and pictures pop up. Swipe left if you don’t like; swipe right if you do. If the other person also swipes right and there is a “match,” both parties get a chance to read more about each other in profiles, and either party can reach out. He says: Athough you may have heard otherwise, Tinder is not just for casual hookups. That said, beware of sexy body shots and dubious messages like, “I live near LAX.” She says: I run when someone’s initial text is “Wazzup?” It means I didn’t even bother to read your profile; I don’t really care what you are like. FOR WOMEN WHO WANT THE UPPER HAND Bumble App Both parties can “like” each other, but only women can reach out. In the case of a match, the female has 24 hours to contact the guy. If she does not, he disappears. With that element, being on Bumble can feel like playing a game. He says: The girls on Bumble seem hotter. There sure are better photos on there—many seem like professionals took them. She says: I like the fact that I have more control. Beware of gimmicks though, like having to pay a fee to get the guy back after he disappears. FOR SINGLES WHO WANT PARTICULARS Match.com This fee-based dating service requires users to divulge more information, filling out forms and personal statements. Singles can express themselves through various writing sections; profiles can include up to 26 photos; and users can set numerous preferences. Communication between members happens through an “anonymous” email network. Names and contact information are kept confidential until the member personally decides to share. He says: I like the fact that you can go deep with preferences. I am a single father. I want to make sure women are okay with that. She says: While Tinder and Bumble have a minimalistic, frank tone, lying on Match is common. And that’s kind of creepy considering the amount of time you spend sharing about yourself (through all the essays, etc.) when you sign up. FOR KICK-BACK TYPES FarmersOnly.com With the slogan “City Folks Just Don’t Get It” this fee-based site is not just for people who work in agriculture or live in rural areas. It is aimed at singles who are animal lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and appreciate the laid-back country lifestyle—regardless of where they actually live. He says: Lots of Trump supporters and people who have a smalltown mentality are on this. She says: I’m not a country girl by any stretch, but it seems like there are guys on it like me—they really want to meet someone to share their lives with. 

Morning Person Anchor Steve Edwards on his remarkable 22 years at the helm of Good Day LA, the turbulent news biz and his steady life in Encino PHOTOGRAPHED BY

MICHAEL BECKER

For this MEN’s issue, VB editor Linda Grasso, who used to work with Steve Edwards in the late ‘90s, reconnects with her former co-worker. No surprise that as someone who regularly doles out tough and sometimes titillating questions, Steve was candid and funny.

You’ve had so many co-anchors on GDLA over the years, Steve. They go; you stay. What keeps FOX renewing your contract? Maybe they’re not paying attention. But seriously, in this business it’s a combo plate of luck, management, ratings, not bumping into the furniture too often and … did I say luck? What do you love about your job? The live, unpredictable nature of every broadcast. There’s a clear path every day that has roadblocks and twists and turns and surprises. There’s comedy and real tragedy. It’s a little corny—but it’s a front row seat to the passing parade that’s an education every day. Anything you don’t particularly like? We’ve become a world of short attention spans: 140 characters, viral vid-

ourventurablvd.com

eos, images that quickly disappear. A wide spectrum of choice is progress, but it hasn’t necessarily made the world better. We have so many ways to communicate, but it often seems like we’re saying less. When it comes to women broadcasters, people always “diss” their hairdos. Have you ever had a bad one? There was a time when I had my hair colored because my graying came in from the top of my head, so it looked liked I was wearing a yarmulke under the lights. But that coloring resulted in a shade of what we liked to call “premature magenta!” Before GDLA, you were at Entertainment Tonight briefly and then KABC. Of all your co-anchors, who has been your favorite? Are you crazy? I’m not going to answer that question. I want to continue living in peace in this town. The news/infotainment biz has changed so much. People used to be glued to the TV in the morning to get the top stories—but now with the internet—behavior has changed. People get news as it happens. When I started in TV in Houston, there weren’t so many options. If Clint Eastwood came to town to plug a movie, he did the show. If a presidential candidate came seeking votes, he did the show. It was pretty much the same when I did AM Los Angeles. There were basically two TV options: us and The Tonight Show. Now there are 50,000 places in new media emerging as we’re speaking. This is how much things have changed: when Elvis Presley died, The CBS Evening News ran it, I think, as the second story. The piece was 90 seconds long. That was it! Imagine

what that would be now: wall-to-wall for weeks. You’ve lived up the street from me in Encino for what, 20 years? Why Encino? When we moved here it just seemed like a nice, quiet place that was near where you could get everything you needed; and it was 20 minutes to everything. That obviously was a long time ago … I always see you walking up the hill with the same pretty, blonde woman—your wife? We’ve been walking that hill for a long time. In fact, we’ve been climbing hills since college and have gotten over most of them. Two kids, grown up (both in the music biz, so semigrown up) and two-and-counting grandkids. Do you have any favorite Valley haunts/hangouts? I like running around the Balboa golf course, walking to the Nike site [top of Mulholland] and the trails beyond. We also like to go to Cucina Bene in Sherman Oaks and Gio Cucina Napoletana in Encino. Have you achieved your dreams? I was the kid who was always announcing into a spoon or a hairbrush. At first though, I was studying for a PhD in clinical psychology. But I came to my senses, got a job at a small radio station and found my home. I’ve been so fortunate, living out most of my fantasies: sports talk host, issues talk radio, TV talk shows and news. I know how lucky I’ve been, and I’m so grateful. 

WHERE WE LIVE | WEEKENDER

Secluded Spaces Part wine country estate and part private spa sanctuary, the recently renovated Bernardus Lodge & Spa is in a class of its own.

O

riginally opened in 1999 and a longtime favorite of wine country vacationers and couples seeking romantic getaways, the Bernardus Lodge & Spa has reached new heights. Tucked in the heart of the Carmel Valley, the Forbes Four-Star resort reopened last summer, boasting 14 new guest lodgings. Set on 28 lush acres, filled with vineyards and spacious gardens, you can spend an entire day and barely see anyone. The vibe is ranch-chic and decidedly elegant. With a 3-to-1 staff ratio, service is at the core of this experience. Ask and you shall receive—whether it’s a butler, complimentary Mercedes-Benz convertible or an alfresco rain shower. With sophisticated furnishings, rooms and suites are the kind you never want to leave and, indeed, many guests don’t. A private entry leads to a secluded infinity jacuzzi and fire pit with mountain and/or vineyard views. Notable highlights include master baths featuring hammered copper, freestanding soaking tubs. The spa, with its new “Dozen Roses” treatment, is an experience not to miss. It begins with a full-body rose clay application, an ancient tradition to remove impurities and hydrate the skin. While the clay dries, guests are pampered with a stimulating scalp and foot massage. Following a warm rinse, there’s a Swedish-massage application of Moroccan rose aromatherapeutic body oil. A glass of Bernardus’ blush rosé wine is the coup de grace. There is a ton to keep you entertained and knee-deep in “om.” Two swimming pools, and croquet and bocce courts are on the property. Big Sur is just a 26-mile drive and more than 20 wine tasting venues are in nearby Carmel Valley. The Lucia Restaurant & Bar features farm fresh California country cuisine. Helmed by Chef Cal Stamenov, the eatery effortlessly pairs dishes with wines from its extensive cellar. The chef pulls veggies and herbs daily from his 2-acre organic garden, as well as a cache of local fishermen and foragers. Despite all the bells and whistles of a first-rate resort, it is the setting that makes Bernardus so special. It’s remote and warm, with the buildings shrouded by mature trees and enveloped in fragrant lavender. Add the fact that every room has stunning views, and you truly feel removed from the real world. 

FAMILY MATTERS | WHERE WE LIVE

The New Order Two dads, two kids, three dogs and one thriving business. For the Horn-Masterson family, it is a tried and true recipe. WRITTEN BY HEATHER

DAVID

PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANE

O’DONNELL

T

ucked away in the quiet foothills just south of the Boulevard you’ll find dynamic duo Bill Horn and Scout Masterson, skillfully combining work and family. The couple share their spacious, ranch-style house with 6-year-old Simone, 2-year-old Bosley and Scout’s mom “granny nanny.” Mix in three rescued Chihuahuas and their busy home-based publicity firm, Marque Communications, and there’s never a dull moment. “About a year ago we moved from Woodland Hills to our new place in Tarzana to get more space for our family and business. We wanted somewhere that our clients, celebrities and the media could come check out the brands we’re representing,” says Bill, who grew up in New Jersey. In 2010 the guys started Marque, which means “brand” in French. The firm handles high-end baby products. The couple of 15 years didn’t always have babies and bottles on the brain. In the early years of their relationship, they were focused on traveling the world and building their careers. Bill was an executive at a big-name publicity firm and Scout was a film and TV casting director. Then their good friends began having babies. “We’re very close with Tori Spelling, and when she started having kids, we spent a lot of time playing with them and caring for them,” Bill explains. In fact the two wound up appearing numerous times on the reality TV show Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood. Tori lovingly referred to them as the “Guncles.” “Soon enough we started realizing that we wanted kids of our own and adoption seemed natural for us. There must be a child that’s meant to be with us and that we were meant to raise,” recounts Bill. In the summer of 2010 Bill and Scout welcomed the birth of their daughter Simone and, from a professional standpoint, it changed everything. “I left my career in casting because I didn’t want to miss out on raising Simone. So we reimagined our lives on our paternity leave,” shares Scout. Bill quickly followed suit: “I went back to work for three months after she was born, but I knew after about two weeks it wasn’t working. I didn’t see the point of going through this arduous, emotional and expensive adoption process only to not see my child except for the weekends,” he says. They decided to work from home, and with only one client it was scarily slow. “I don’t know how we survived,” Bill comments with a laugh. Seven years later Marque has grown into a flourishing large-scale boutique agency. Despite their busy work schedules, the couple like to entertain friends and family. “On the weekends we have ‘Sunday fun days.’ Bill barbecues, tons of kids are in the pool, chaos ensues, and we love it,” explains Scout. Sure there are some crazy moments and it can be exhausting, but for the most part, nowadays the Horn-Masterson household runs like a finetuned engine. “I’m proud of the family we’ve created,” beams Scout. 

he jacaranda-lined streets of Grammy winner Steve Tyrell’s Sherman Oaks home are a far cry from Houston’s impoverished Fifth Ward where he grew up. “Our streets were made of rocks and shell. My father owned a little Italian grocery store and we lived in the back,” Steve shares. At 19, Steve climbed behind the wheel of his convertible, yellow ‘64 Chevy Impala and hit the road for the Big Apple. He landed a job at Scepter Records, promoting such acts as Dionne Warwick and The Shirelles. Then he headed west, ultimately ending up in Sherman Oaks, where he has lived for more than 30 years. “Being home is like being on a vacation for me, and I love that Beverly Hills and Hollywood are just a stone’s throw away.” With Tiffany-blue eyes, a warm, infectious smile and a killer knack for storytelling, he’s one of the busiest artists in the business. As a producer, he has worked with legends such as Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Linda Ronstadt and Rod Stewart, winning the British rocker his only Grammy. Twenty-five years and 12 albums later, he’s still going strong. Steve tours throughout the year and wraps it up each December at the Cafe Carlyle in New York. He’s done his solo act there every holiday season since the passing of the legendary Bobby Short in 2005. “It was an unexpected privilege, an honor to take over for Bobby Short. I never imagined I’d be doing this for 13 years. I also never imagined I’d make 10 albums that achieved Top 5 status on the Billboard charts, after I turned 50 years old.” Steve recently made headlines when Hillary Clinton and her family took in his show at the Carlyle on one of her first post-election nights out, one that landed on the front page of the Sunday edition of The New York Times. These days, Steve is dedicated to finishing his next album, a tribute to Ray Charles. It’ll be recorded at his favorite place in the world … home. 

Family Affair

W

hen John Speaks, Akida Mashaka and Paddy Aubrey met at a preschool a few years back, they had their dad hats on. With more than a half dozen kids between them, they were focused on snacks, grades and getting children to and from activities— and of course their jobs. John worked in the music video industry and had been involved with an eatery on the westside, Akida was a Harvard-educated attorney who owned and operated Hoagies & Wings in Sherman Oaks, and Paddy was a chef who ran a caterering company. John and Akida tasted Paddy’s mac and cheese (among other dishes) at one of the school’s events. “It was really, really good,” Akida recalls. “Comfort food at its best.” “I make it without a roux,” Paddy shares. “That way it isn’t as filling, and you can have more than one serving.” “One minute I’m sitting by myself at a table, and these two guys scoot over and the next thing I know we’re talking business,” laughs John. After many more conversations and investments from friends and family, the trio opened Hyperion Public in Silver Lake. It had been an establishment that was a favorite of the gay community and locals weren’t exactly thrilled with the change. But by offering pub fare with creative, contemporary twists (like spicy, blueberry chicken wings, a veggie banh mi with a quinoa black bean patty and a crispy Brussels sprout cobb salad) and by providing a welcoming atmo-

sphere, “We ultimately won the community over,” Akida explains. Buoyed by that success, two years ago they expanded to a second location in Studio City. While the Silver Lake eatery is urban and young, “This location is more about families—people with kids,” says John. “We wanted the atmosphere, service and food to be comfortable,” adds Akida. Hyperion Public is divided into two sections—the restaurant section with several deep-seated, spacious booths, which with special activities like a weekly “Karaoke Night,” becomes off limits for kids by 9 p.m. and the more casual side, which John describes as a “community pub.” “Everybody needs a place to go with it feeling like a big night out,” explains John. “You want to sit at the bar and grab a quick beer after work? Great. You want to bring the kids in for chicken fries after a little league game? That works too.” Responsibilities are divvied up. Paddy handles the menu and kitchen; Akita helms business operations and John is in charge of marketing and PR. Meet the trio together and their wives’ names quickly come up in casual conversation. Lia, Akita’s wife, helps out with marketing and coordination. John’s wife, the fashion and interior designer Claire Stansfield, helmed the decor of both eateries. Paddy’s wife is the ABC TV executive-turned-producer, Jamie Tarses. 

Get Your Drink On Chef Phillip Frankland Lee continues his mission to raise the bar on “going out” in Encino, with the chic cocktail lounge, Woodley Proper. WRITTEN BY

P

hillip Frankland Lee’s mom always taught him that anything is possible. And the 30-year-old seems to embody that philosophy, particularly when it comes to his hometown. In late 2015, the former Top Chef contestant opened the high-end, small plates eatery, Scratch Bar, on the second story of an outdoor mall in Encino, a town with a dispiriting dearth of non-chain restaurants. The space next door to Scratch Bar was also leased. Phillip envisioned the whole floor as home to various eating and drinking establishments. But for more than a year, the second space sat empty. Plans kept changing. A partnership with another chef for a ramen bar didn’t work out; there were also delays in getting a liquor license. Now Phillip’s dream of creating a culinary mecca at the mall is one step closer to reality, with the opening of Woodley Proper (16101 Ventura Blvd.). And a sliver of a third space—in between Woodley Proper and Scratch Bar—will soon house Frankland’s Crab & Co. (slated to open in May). “It’s a fast food-style crab shack,” according to Phillip. “We’ll have items like fried oysters and lobster rolls.” While Woodley’s tagline is “The Place for Proper Drinks,” it already is much more. Yes, there are fresh ingredient-infused cocktails (with fun names like “Valley Girl” and “Los Encinos”). And, as with Scratch Bar, Phillip’s dishes are full of tasty

surprises and beyond-the-pale presentations. Seafood isn’t just fresh and delicious on the tower; it is meticulously assembled with gorgeous shells and offers homemade cheeses and flavorful charcuterie. Like Scratch Bar, many of the ingredients (breads, condiments, pickles, etc.) are made from scratch. And once again Phillip’s wife, Margarita—a highly skilled pastry chef— proves to be a silver bullet, whipping up crazy tasty desserts like warm donut balls served with lemon-laced whipped cream. But what makes Woodley Proper really noteworthy are the environs. It’s a cool scene, yep, in Encino. Under the sophisticated eye of interior designer Jordan Olson (who has put his stamp on several swanky West Hollywood eateries), the space is elegant and comfortable in a plush yet understated way. Reclaimed wood from an old barn lines walls, along with Victorian wallpaper. Patrons can sit at the ample bar or at one of several cozy seating areas with wing chairs and sofas. A mix of lighting fixtures creates the perfect amount of “glow.” Woodley Proper is more spacious than say Augustine Wine Bar and more welcoming than the short-lived The Fiscal Agent, where a guy with earphones would greet you and then radio inside to see if you’d be “allowed entry.” There’s no pretension here. Heck, Woodley Proper may not even be proper. It’s just a helluva of a fun spot to hang out. 

Juicy Details On the heels of opening his NoHo juice bar, Greenhouse, bartender-abouttown Jason Bran shows us how to take cocktails to a new level. WRITTEN BY

S

ure, fresh-squeezed juice is great in the morning, but it has become so much more than that. Flavorful juice is now the cornerstone of a craft cocktail movement that has proliferated in the past decade. Best news yet: it’s now possible to make those tangy, somewhat healthy cocktails without ever leaving home. Take it from Jason Bran, co-owner of Greenhouse, maker of a wide and interesting array of cocktailfriendly, cold-pressed and unpasteurized juices. Jason is a veteran of vaunted cocktail bars like The Roger Room and The Warwick and, with his Hollywood Cocktail Co., makes drinks for high-volume events like the Oscars and Emmys. He first partnered with entrepreneur John Chae on Greenhouse at “The Original” Farmers Market on Third Street early last year. “I felt like it was an opportunity for me to apply this work ethic and respect for ingredient and process outside the realm of alcohol,” Jason says. “Plenty of people drink juice and don’t drink alcohol,” he explains. Folks lined up for their juice, smoothies and açaí bowls, fueled by fruits and vegetables from downtown’s wholesale produce market. And last fall, the duo teamed with Jason’s trusted lieutenant Chris Wilson to launch a NoHo branch (5235 Lankershim Boulevard). With brick and reclaimed wood, exposed rafters, a vintage Pigskin 621 A.D. football arcade game and provocative paintings (starring rapper Eazy-E and zombies glued to their phones), Greenhouse has a cool, whimsical vibe. Instead of crafting seasonal concoctions, Greenhouse features juices they can source consistently, including orange, grapefruit, pineapple, apple and watermelon. Of course, not all juice is created equal. Jason says, “A lot of things that are good for you don’t taste good and it’s okay because they’re healthy.” When planning home cocktails to enjoy with friends and family, Jason has advice based on over a decade of bartending experience. Keep in mind: “Fresher is always better. Three days is the window for me. Five to seven is out of range for acceptable flavor.” For summer, Jason has worked to develop a keg house-made ginger beer and a rarely seen sugar cane juice, a nectar normally found in Vietnamese communities. It’s pretty simple to make these drinks soar—just add alcohol. 

VENTURA BLVD, MAY/JUNE 2017

GETTING FRUITY Jason touts O.J.’s versatility, saying, “When oranges taste the best, not super sour or super sweet, you can make them work great with anything, even Cognac.” Start your orange journey with vodka to dial up the fruit’s depth, add something aromatic and top with soda (clear or flavored).

“Grapefruit and tequila is a standard go-to,” Jason says. “Before I understood what tequilas I loved, I always loved acidity, sour and sweetness. A Paloma (see recipe opposite page) is one of the most refreshing, summery ways to hang out.”

“Green apple gets a bad rap because of the green apple martini, but it’s a great ingredient,” he adds. Apple juice might not stand up to vodka, cognac or bourbon but pairs well with tequila.

“Fresh pineapple juice, compared to pasteurized juice, is an incredible eye-opener,” Jason says. “The texture’s thicker and can tolerate spice and acids and is an interesting building block. Dole cans are oversweet and one-note, but fresh pineapple juice has an earthy characteristic, ready for gin. Tequila, mezcal and rum all play nice. A little pineapple juice in a daiquiri, add some lime and that’s a vacation right there.”

“Watermelon can be trickier because it takes a lot of juice to have prominent watermelon flavor,” Jason says. “Build around it to help bring watermelon flavor to the surface. Go with vodka or even gin that doesn’t have incredible botanicals.”

When the camera is off, a chunk of his time is focused on his blue-eyed husky, Storm. The twoyear-old shares Joey’s home with another husky, older “brother” Wolf, and Joey’s boyfriend. “Storm thinks he is the pack leader. He wants to be known in his house. He is our problem kid,” Joey chuckles. Joey, who was also a contestant on The Amazing Race, points to his dogs as a major factor in why he lives here. “I never saw myself living in the Valley to be honest with you. But when I started looking to buy, the Valley had so many more options, like a yard for a dog. Now I love it and I can’t imagine living anywhere else.” Joey describes himself as someone who “loves creating worlds,” and recently released The New York Times best-selling novel Brothers of Eden. Dog-on-it! We are a dog-loving nation. Our pooches are our best friends and considered members of our family. They wipe out our pocketbooks in mindbending ways and onerously hog our free time. Josh WoLF & Rocky Comedian Josh Wolf got his rescue, a pit bull boxer mix, a day after his son’s 10th birthday. “We went to one of those big, outdoor adoptions in Burbank. My daughter and I were looking at other puppies, but Beth (my wife) and the birthday boy zeroed in on Rocky. The rest is history.” Josh describes Rocky as “the most gentle soul I have ever come across.” Now in his twilight years, “he just wants to be loved on.” The Amherst, Massachusetts native got on stage for the first time when he was 15 and was immediately hooked. “I’ve always done stand-up. There was never a Plan B, even though maybe there should have been,” he laughs. Josh was a regular on E!’s Chelsea Lately and hosted the late night talk show, The Josh Wolf Show, on CMT. The comedian lives in Sherman Oaks with his family. “I love the pace, the people and the fact that everything you need is a mile in either direction on Ventura Blvd.” Most weeks you’ll find Josh touring with his standup routine. Roy Disney & Patch

[See next page]

Roy Disney bought his Toluca Lake estate in 1984 from his grandfather, Roy O. Disney, brother to Walt and co-founder of Disney Studios. “Walt was the creative one; my grandfather was more behind the scenes. He handled the finances.” Little did the financial investor know that decades later he’d come to appreciate the property—not just as a home for wife Sheri and their 13-year-old son—but for the sprawling grounds where his two dogs, in particular, 11-year-old Patch, rule. “When we adopted Patch, we were told he was a purebred Jack Russell. But we’re not really sure what he is,” says Roy, who serves on several boards including that of Campbell Hall, where his son is a student. Catch the duo on a sunny spring day playing on the lawn, and it is easy to see that Patch’s pedigree is irrelevant. Roy’s affinity for the pooch is akin to that of a proud papa. “He is like a spoiled infant! But seriously, he is scary smart. You should see some of the stuff he does.” Groomed by Cat Sherwin

Kevin Fonteyne & Zeus After eight years of ups and downs, 26-year-old actor Kevin Fonteyne had his career take off last year when he snagged the role of Johnny Cash on Sun Records. Set in Memphis, the limited CMT series tells the story of the birth of rock ‘n’ roll. The New Hampshire native, who lives in a studio apartment, shares, “The last thing I needed was a dog.” But on New Year’s Eve when Kevin saw the part mastiff, part pit bull rescue at an adoption tent at the Gelson’s on Laurel Canyon “everything changed.” “Essentially, I met him. He was just a puppy. He climbed up on me and I just thought I gotta do something,” explains Kevin. Now the two are inseparable, whether running in Fryman Canyon or along the Wisdom Tree Hike [on Cahuenga Peak]. He is currently awaiting word on whether there will be a second season of Sun Records. Middle age is filled with challenges. And for many men, one of them is low levels of testosterone. Here we offer a breakdown of the hormone and a candid look at the latest treatments. WRITTEN BY STEVEN ILLUSTRATED BY CHRISTINE

58

VENTURA BLVD, MAY/JUNE 2017

STIEFEL GEORGIADES

ourventurablvd.com

In any locker room or sports bar where men over 40 hang out, you’ll likely hear banter about testosterone—guys complaining about low levels, comparing therapy notes and debating, in some cases, controversial treatments. Testosterone is a steroidal hormone, derived from cholesterol. The testes primarily secrete it; yet, women also have testosterone (just as men have estrogen). Why do we need it? Healthy levels of natural testosterone help a guy feel and look like a guy. The hormone bolsters physical energy, sexual prowess and fertility; it encourages secondary sex traits such as muscle mass, body hair and even bone density. In addition, this key male hormone supports brain function, endurance and a sense of well-being. Levels fluctuate throughout life. Natural testosterone levels peak for most men in their early 20s. By the time guys reach their late 30s or early 40s, many are in the lower third of normal range or even below. Then in later life, testosterone levels continue down that slippery slope. “The most profound cause of declining testosterone levels for men is age,” says Gary Bellman, MD, a board-certified urologist and antiaging expert at the Southern California Urology Institute in West Hills. Other factors play a smaller role in the decline of T levels, he adds. These include smoking, ill health, alcohol consumption, narcotic use and obesity, among others. While you can address many of these secondary factors, you can’t reverse the aging process. Or can you? Testosterone therapy won’t make you younger, but many experts believe that boosting testosterone levels to appropriate, moderate levels may, at the very least, improve the way you feel and look for your age. Therapy is not without controversy, however, both among those who recommend differing types of testosterone therapy and those who are skeptical about it altogether. ALL THE RAGE Testosterone therapy has grown in popularity over the years; millions of American men now use prescription testosterone. You’ve likely seen the commercials for these products, targeting the same male demographic as cholesterol-reducing medications and prescriptions that address erectile dysfunction. Medical testosterone is now available in many different formulations such as topical (transdermal), injectable, implant and oral. Topical forms include patches, creams and alcohol-based gels. Injectable prescription testosterone can be administered through intramuscular or subcutaneous shots, while pellets are implanted. And there are also oral options, although many doctors discourage the use of these because they can stress the liver.

Finally, there are multiple over-the-counter forms of oral supplements that also claim to boost T levels, but Dr. Bellman isn’t a fan. “I’m surprised by the number of well-educated patients I see who buy stuff from the liquor store or online rather than going to a medical professional to get the guidance to increase their testosterone levels safely and effectively.” With so many options, choosing a treatment can be confusing. Further complicating the matter, many men and their partners are concerned about possible side effects—in particular potential behavioral changes—although Dr. Bellman downplays those concerns. “There’s a misconception that medical testosterone therapy will make a man aggressive,” he says. “Properly managed by a doctor, testosterone therapy will make a man more manly, but not more aggressive.” Dr. Bellman emphasizes one caveat—administering testosterone should only be done under an experienced medical practitioner’s care. THE “T” TIMELINE Your pituitary gland stimulates your testes to produce testosterone and sperm. After naturally-produced testosterone enters your blood, it attaches to androgen receptors. This in turn increases anabolic signaling in muscle tissue, which encourages increased muscle strength, enhanced hand-to-eye coordination, quickness and other performance-related skeletal muscle effects. Higher levels of natural T also increase your metabolism and your body’s ability to use protein more efficiently. When your body stops producing ideal levels of T, you’ll likely begin to notice it. You’ll start to feel more sluggish. You’ll add body fat

and your muscle mass will decrease. Perhaps you’ll feel a little depressed. That’s the time when you might want to consider consulting a doctor. “The first question I ask a patient once we’ve determined that he has low testosterone is: ‘What is your plan with reproduction?’” Dr. Bellman says. “That’s because all types of testosterone therapy have the potential to reduce fertility.” Once you provide your body with an exogenous (i.e., external) supply of testosterone, your testes don’t need to work as hard. This leads to a further reduction in production of both testosterone and sperm, decreasing your chances of reproducing. Using prescription testosterone can also reduce the size of testicles by as much as 25%, according to Dr. Bellman. He adds that this effect is typically reversible if you stop testosterone therapy. On the other hand, young bodybuilders who abuse steroids may shrink their testicles far beyond this—to the point where the damage is not reversible. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENTS Shira Miller, MD, Concierge Integrative Medicine Physician in Sherman Oaks, takes a step-by-step approach. First the internist determines if low T is due to primary or secondary hypogonadism. The primary condition is when the testes cannot produce testosterone due to testicular injury (e.g., cancer, radiation, trauma, infection or aging). Secondary hypogonadism is when the testes can produce testosterone, but other factors cause decreased messaging from the hypothalamus and/or pituitary to the testes, which reduces testosterone output.

Testosterone therapy won't make you younger, but many experts believe that boosting testosterone levels to appropriate, moderate levels may, at the very least, improve the way you feel and look for your age.

Manning Up

When the latter is diagnosed, Dr. Miller’s first recommendation is clomiphene citrate, an oral estrogen-receptor-blocking drug that allows men with declining testosterone levels to optimize T release from their testes. “This oral medication doesn’t shut off the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis and is especially important for men wanting to have children, as it doesn’t cause low sperm count or infertility, which is a guaranteed side effect of testosterone,” Dr. Miller says. David Kawashiri, MD, at Cedars-Sinai, Beverly Hills, prefers to prescribe topical forms for its more modest boost. “Topical applications provide a steadier level of improved testosterone,” he says. In general, Dr. Kawashiri finds that topical forms are easier for patients to administer because they don’t need to make as many visits to their doctor’s office. “Injectable forms spike when administered but then lower over time,” Dr. Kawashiri says, leaving patients with diminishing returns between doctor visits. The bottom line: no form of testosterone therapy is perfect for everyone. Factors such as age, primary objective, level of dedication to treatment and lifestyle all have to be weighed and talked through with a doctor. TESTIMONIES “I’ve used topical gel for more than eight years,” says Austin [a pseudonym], a 54-yearold man in Woodland Hills. “I’ve noticed many benefits, including an increase in energy and vitality.” In addition, he describes a boost in muscle mass and a decrease in body fat shortly after he first began using the topical. “At first I used the patch, and I didn’t have any problems. But after about three months, I began to develop a rash in the shape of the patch after

FACT VS. FICTION Will testosterone therapy make me leaner and more muscular?

When you begin to use medical testosterone, your body will likely grow leaner and more muscular, especially when you follow a weight-training regimen and healthy diet. You’ll almost surely see better results than if you taking prescription testosterone. 60 weren’t VENTURA BLVD, MAY/JUNE 2017

each application.” That led him to switch to a gel product. “I have noticed an increase in body hair and thinning of the hair on my head,” he says. But Austin also says that he can’t necessarily attribute that to testosterone therapy as compared to normal aging. Informed about potentially reducing these side effects by using an injectable or implant form, he says, “The topical version has been beneficial, but maybe it’s time to have another conversation with my doctor.” Another testosterone user, Greg [a pseudonym] in Encino, has been using intramuscular injectable testosterone for three years. His protocol is a weekly injection for three months followed by a 90-day break from treatment. “I noticed that I had more energy and reduced body fat after I first began,” Greg says. He was fit when he started injection therapy and didn’t notice a weight gain or loss overall due to the fact that muscle replaced body fat. “I still weigh 174 pounds, three years later.” He notes that one side benefit may be more youthful-appearing skin, a common anecdotal claim among those who use prescription T. “At least that’s what my fiancée tells me,” he says. Finally, Greg says that he does notice a reduction in energy and muscle mass at the end of his 90-day break—a signal that it’s time to restart his weekly injections. LEVEL BEST Normal total testosterone levels for most men range from about 250 to 1100 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter) in their blood. This includes both free and bound testosterone. The normal range for free testosterone should fall between 46 and 224 ng/dL. The Endocrine Society recommends that doctors draw blood samples in the morning

Could using medical testosterone harm my heart? A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (2013) suggested that medical testosterone therapy could be harmful to the heart. This drew a letter of condemnation from the Androgen Study Group, requesting a retraction. “Prior to the 2013 study, there were over a dozen peer-reviewed articles showing testosterone therapy is protective of the heart,” Dr. Bellman says. Today many doctors continue to support the conclusion that testosterone therapy is heart protective rather than harmful.

Will exercising more boost my T levels?

“Largely, it’s a myth that exercise will significantly boost testosterone for those

to determine peak T levels and if testosterone therapy is recommended, Dr. Bellman says. “Men who have a total level below 250 ng/dL at any time of day may have low testosterone,” he adds. It’s particularly important to determine your peak level, and younger men (those 35-40) with low T at other times of day may be within normal ranges in the morning. Older men show less fluctuation throughout the day, Dr. Bellman explains. THE END GAME “Testosterone therapy makes most men with low T levels feel better,” Dr. Bellman points out. The key is to find the form of T therapy that meets all of your physiological and lifestyle needs. Dr. Miller adds a note of caution: “Before one begins any testosterone therapy the cause of one’s low T should be determined, so as not to miss a more primary diagnosis and to guide treatment options.” She says that using testosterone therapy without expert consultation and comprehensive blood testing may miss, for example, the diagnosis of a prolactinoma, a common benign brain tumor that can cause low T. Our experts are in sync on the broadest point: Medical testosterone therapy may be beneficial for many men, so long as they’ve had an honest conversation with their doctor about their needs and current health status. Only after that should they choose medical testosterone therapy. Regular doctor visits and blood tests, which continue to monitor testosterone levels and other markers of health, are also part of the road map to healthy hormone levels. 

with low levels,” Dr. Bellman says. In fact, it could reduce the hormone as exercise burns or uses testosterone to fuel activity. On the other hand, some experts suggest that exercise may make you more sensitive to the testosterone you do have. Bottom line: Do not reduce exercise expecting to boost T levels.

Does consuming testosteroneboosting foods drive up T levels?

It’s a nice idea that consuming specific foods will spike testosterone, but Dr. Bellman says this is mostly a fallacy. “Diet is only one small factor in testosterone levels. You can’t reverse time by consuming large amounts of kale and spinach.” Eat these foods for health, but don’t rely on them to boost your low T levels, he recommends.

hen Janelle Werdesheim got the itch to move a couple of years ago, she considered building. “But then I started thinking about our kids (Isabel, now 13 and Grant, now 12), and I honestly thought I just don’t want to take time away from being with them at this point.” Instead, the interior designer and husband Brian, set their sights on a turnkey spec home by Valley-based builder Dimitri Lekkos (Lekkos Builder Group). The New England-style traditional, dotted with big windows and spacious rooms, has grey-whitewashed oak floors throughout. The home also has great “flow” and nearly every space is filled with natural light. Good bones aside, Janelle and Brian knew she could transform it into the ideal home to raise their family.

FIRST IMPRESSION With two-story high ceilings, a grand foyer greets visitors with a sweeping staircase. “The entry was one of the things I really loved. In terms of décor, I wanted it to be welcoming but to also set the tone of home, which is casual but with a refined edge,” says Janelle.

“Janelle is a big-picture person,” explains Brian, a wealth advisor for Oppenheimer & Co. “She has a vision and she executes it. She just makes sure I am comfortable with it and 90% of the time I say, ‘That’s perfect.’” “The only thing that we didn’t love about the house was the backyard, which consisted basically of a lawn and several types of concrete,” shares Janelle. Sherman Oaks-based landscape designer Sarina Klemes was hired with a set of instructions. Janelle wanted different areas for entertaining: a built-in BBQ, an outdoor TV area and an open area in the center, where more seating could be added. “We talked about keeping the grass but then decided that replacing it with a decomposed granite would make it easier to entertain. Once that was determined, all the other elements fell into place,” explains Sarina. Drought-tolerant plants like the Olive tree, as well as Boxwood and Westringia shrubs, were the perfect complements. Painted a sandy white with a Swiss coffee trim throughout (all Benjamin Moore paints), the home is awash in subtle tones of grey, ocean blue and occasional pops of teal.

A living room near the entry sets the stage for a stunning painting by Sam Francis, an artist whom the couple admires. “I love his use of colors and the abstract nature of it. It feels like controlled chaos,” Brian states. Complementing the bold painting are two mid-century modern chairs from Grace Furniture and a muted antique rug bought at Aga John. The living room wall, which faces the street, is lined with long, rectangular windows. Janelle hung the woven roman shades approximately 6 inches under where the glass begins. “With the window open that high, privacy is not an issue, so the shades start lower. That way it lets the light in,” she says. An extra wide hallway leads to a dining room with a stunning contemporary light fixture (purchased at Arteriors), hung over a table for 10. Grass cloth, in a soothing shade of ocean blue, creates a cozy but elegant vibe. Toward the back of the house is a large family room and kitchen that flow into each other. Glass doors in the family room open to reveal the backyard.

SOLID AS A ROCK “The reason why the decomposed granite works so well is that the grey color blends well with the hue of the Pennsylvania Bluestone. So the yard doesn’t feel cut in half. The fountain, purchased at Garden Temple, also enhances the space. Because of all the beautiful elements in the backyard, the granite seemingly disappears,” explains landscape designer Sarina Klemes.

Two pieces by the photographer Slim Aarons, known for taking shots of people at famous vacation destinations, are on the family room walls—one shot in Palm Desert and one in the South of France. “I’ve always loved his work,” explains Janelle. Brian, a founding member of The Summa Group, a wealth management team at Oppenheimer & Co., can get away from it all in his home office. A rich hue of chocolate was used on the walls, giving the room a masculine vibe, which is cleverly offset by a whimsical rug with orange and raspberry stripes. A handsome Eames chair and ottoman sit catty-corner to the desk. Standing in the open-air space between the kitchen and family room, facing the back yard, Janelle takes a moment to appreciate the fruits of her labor. “I love this—having it all open to the outdoors. Plus at night, when we all are here, there is a spot for everyone. We all pick different spots but we are still all together,” she says with a smile. 

Sip. Exercise. Repeat. Sampling brews in Portland by foot, bike and light rail WRITTEN BY TERRY

rom craft beer to saké, the Portland area is chockfull of fun on tap. It was too wet in March to hike, so we opted for a more intoxicating itinerary that included the light exercise of walking, cycling and beer-tasting arm curls. Our drinking adventure began with a Brewvana walking tour ($69 per person) and included a guide, tastings at four breweries, a beer-tasting notebook and a souvenir glass. We took MAX Light Rail from the airport to Hotel deLuxe to drop off our bags, which made us late for our noon Brewvana South by Southeast tour. (Better idea: Fly with a backpack so you can take the MAX directly from the airport to your tour’s first brewery.) By the time we arrived at Cascade Brewing Barrel House, Craig and Wendy, the other couple on the tour, had already finished their flights. Lizzy, our passionate beer guide, sprang into action—ordering our beer flights, outfitting us with a pretzel necklace for snacking and our beer-tasting notebook. Wendy had booked this tour because Craig loves sour beer, and Cascade is famous for its sours. I discovered I like sour beers too, while my buddy remains partial to IPAs. Our other stops were at Base Camp Brewing, ADX (aka Art Design Portland) and Burnside Brewery. Lizzy is a self-described “total beer nerd” and really takes delight in sharing the Portland craft beer experience. We took a break from drinking to shop. (Note: a beer buzz makes shopping more fun.) And since Oregon has no

sales tax, the price you see is what you pay, so pack a credit card. Our day wrapped with dinner at Labrewatory, where brewers are constantly experimenting to create new concoctions. With the Doe! Si! Doh! Peanut Butter Stout, powdered peanut butter is added to the beer. Down 2 Funk Vol. 2 is a farmhouse saison made with wild yeast rather than strictly cultivated yeast. Despite our ongoing beer sampling, Tamale Boy’s tasty tamales soaked up enough alcohol for us to help our Uber driver find our hotel. DAY 2: IMBIBING AND BIKING We kicked off our second day with “donuts for grownups” at Blue Star Donuts. Locals may love the maple bacon donut, but we were blown away by the lemon poppyseed buttermilk. My friend lingered for more shopping at the second-hand boutiques along East Burnside Street in southeast Portland, while I grabbed an Uber to Oregon City for a guided bike ride. I met Thom Batty, owner of The Bike Concierge, at Coin Toss Brewery to try out his new 9-mile ride that includes tastings at a brewery, a winery and a distillery. Tim Hohl, Coin Toss Brewery’s founder, says the name is a nod to the event that gave Portland its name. In 1845, two New England settlers, Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove, flipped a coin for naming rights. Lovejoy was from Boston and Pettygrove was from Portland, Maine. (And yes, I toasted Pettygrove’s victory, while Batty sipped soda. He doesn’t drink and guide.) From Coin Toss, we rode to Villa Catalana Cellars, where I enjoyed sampling the fruit of the vine and Trail Distilling, where the tour ended with my tasting handcrafted vodka and gin. (I think Batty should name the tour “The Legs and Liver Ride” because both get a workout.) DAYS 3 & 4: THE DRINK GOES ON On the third day, our favorite stop was SakéOne Brewery in Forest Grove where Momokawa and Moonstone sakés are brewed. Be sure to take the brewery tour to learn about the intricacies of polishing, soaking and fermenting rice to create a world-class sake. The facility is called a Kura and much of the equipment is imported from Japan. We ended our trip with appetizers and beer at Breakside NW Slabtown, Portland’s 75 th brewery. While dining and imbibing, you can see the brew tanks that are openly displayed at the far end of the restaurant. Breakside has great beer, a fun vibe, and the pickled vegetables knocked our socks off. I enjoyed a bottle of their Passionfruit Sour Ale, while my friend had a beer flight. Six more breweries are slated to open this year. The thing that makes beer grazing in Portland such a carefree, amusing experience is the availability of light rail, Uber and Lyft. Most breweries we visited were less than 3/10 mile from light rail. So instead of driving, you can drink, walk and ride. These days you can find craft beer almost anywhere from San Diego to San Francisco, but Portland beer tasting is fascinating and completely unpretentious. And so is the wine tasting. And you don’t need to drink to enjoy Portland. It’s a coffee lover’s paradise, where independent baristas rule, and Starbucks is pretty much limited to the airport. 

ysa Kristensen, CFA®, founded Laurel Terrace Finance, LLC in 2014 with the purpose of assisting individuals, couples and families with organizing and managing their personal financial affairs. She has worked in the financial industry for two decades and is a CFA® charterholder. What is your primary objective with clients? “Financial wellness is not determined by income alone. I work with my clients on the essential elements needed to establish, grow and preserve wealth. These include a balanced household budget, an emergency savings fund, a plan for investments and retirement, appropriate life insurance and an estate plan, if applicable.” How do you differentiate yourself from others in the industry? “Working as a fee-only advisor through my own firm allows me to put my clients’ needs above all else. I do not receive commissions or referral fees, and I have the freedom to place clients with trusted colleagues specialized in estate, tax or insurance, who provide an equivalent level of exceptional service. I am able to focus on comprehensive solutions for clients, rather than sell financial products.” How do you address clients’ specific needs? “My clients range from young individuals entering college, to families and executives, who need to put their daily financial affairs in order and plan for their long-term goals. We always begin with a conversation to outline their unique situation. We then work strategically—and according to an agreed-upon plan—to meet the desired goals. Our work typically involves a series of meetings, but I am also able to address a single aspect of financial planning in a shorter time frame. Once our initial work is complete, I am available as an ongoing resource as financial needs change and life events occur. It is a close and lasting relationship.” What is your current focus with clients? “This time of year brings changes in family dynamics. I have clients planning a wedding, expecting a baby, purchasing a home, sending children to college or having children return home from college. Some are experiencing several of these events at once! Each event is significant financially and benefits from discussion and planning.”

“I am an advocate for increased dialogue regarding financial wellness and am committed to seeing financial literacy taught in schools.” S P E C I A L A DV E RT I S I N G S E C T I O N

What do you consider your most important skill? “I truly value being of service. Putting all the pieces of the financial puzzle together is not easy. If you find yourself struggling with your finances, begin a conversation with a qualified professional. When my clients find themselves out of step with their financial priorities, their personal relationships suffer, as well as their happiness and well-being.” Disclaimer: Individuals should independently consider the appropriateness of all financial advice, having regard to your own objectives, financial situation and needs.

Seapoint Business Advisors Kevin Berson 15165 Ventura Blvd. Suite 245 Sherman Oaks 310-985-0250 seapointadvisors.com

“When a business owner engages me to sell their business, I understand that I’m doing far more than completing a transaction; I’m helping them realize the legacy they’ve built over decades of hard work.”

K

evin Berson is a Valley native and Sherman Oaks-based business broker with 15 years experience helping global firms and small- and mid-size businesses close successful mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Kevin earned his BA from UCLA and and his MBA from the Marshall School at USC. He led technology and strategy consulting projects at Arthur Andersen and helped execute M&A transactions collectively valued at $400 million at Technicolor before joining Seapoint. Kevin lives in Sherman Oaks with his wife, Jennifer, an attorney-turned-PR entrepreneur, and their two boys, Ryan (7) and Jack (5), who play baseball at Sherman Oaks Little League and go to school in Encino. How did you become a business broker? “When I turned 40 a couple years ago, I realized it was ‘now or never’ in terms of pursuing my own entrepreneurial path. The time felt right, so I launched my consulting firm, Kinected, to help entrepreneurs with strategic planning and financial consulting. One of my first projects was helping the owner of the largest CrossFit® gym in the Valley to evaluate and negotiate an unsolicited offer. I helped him get a price that was 40% higher than he expected. The success of this transaction made me realize that I can apply my background and experience working on large corporate transactions to help small and mid-size business owners value, attract qualified buyers and ultimately sell their businesses.” How do you help clients who are selling a business? “Working with business owners on a daily basis, I realize that selling a company is one of the most personal and emotional decisions that entrepreneurs can make. Business owners need to be financially and—more importantly— emotionally ready. I like to work with business owners as early as possible—even a couple years ahead of a potential sale—to help them take all the right steps to achieve the highest possible sales price by implementing revenue enhancement, operational improvements and tax mitigation strategies.” Tell us about your advisory process. “I have a proven and structured 10-step process that helps business owners know what to expect and understand exactly where we are in the deal. I craft a unique marketing plan, designed to attract multiple buyers and create competition through a controlled auction process. I serve as the ‘deal quarterback,’ managing the process, screening buyers and coordinating with attorneys, CPAs and bankers while the owner continues to focus on successfully running the business.”

76

VENTURA BLVD, MAY/JUNE 2017

What makes you different from other advisors? “I provide a very high level of personalized service and build trusted relationships with clients. I understand that when a business owner engages me to sell their business, I’m doing far more than completing a transaction; I’m helping them realize the legacy they’ve built over decades of hard work. I leverage my MBA, consulting and M&A experience across a wide range of deal sizes ($300,000 to $300 Million) and industries, including technology, manufacturing, distribution and business services, to better serve my clients.” What do you like most about your job? “I take great pride in helping business owners and buyers successfully transition into the next phase of their lives. I’ve helped owners retire and assisted buyers with getting U.S. visas. Every deal is bit of a puzzle, requiring the right chemistry between buyer and seller, terms and financing, and I enjoy the challenge. I also have to admit that I love the schedule flexibility that comes with being an entrepreneur. I take advantage of down time and enjoy going for a mid-day run along Valley Vista, hiking Runyon Canyon or coaching my son’s T-Ball team—all things I could never do in the corporate world.” What do your clients say about you? “Kevin is an engaging and detail-oriented advisor. He works tirelessly to put together financials and strategic advice that help structure transactions in a way that maximizes his clients’ return. He is an invaluable asset for business planning, strategy and financing.” – David S. “Kevin’s assistance with the sale of my business was invaluable. I was a bit skeptical about the process and not really sure if selling my business was worth the effort. Kevin made the process relatively painless with his indefatigable support.” – Scott P. “Kevin is a phenomenal M&A advisor! I hired him to save a deal that was falling apart. Not only did he save the deal, he also helped me buy the business for 30% less than I planned to spend.” – Julie P. “Kevin was professional and knowledgeable during the business search, negotiation and closing processes. He’s easy to work with and perseveres through any challenge.” – Matt K Tell us a fun fact about you. “Sponsored by Jay Leno and The Tonight Show, some childhood friends and I traveled the country in the summer of 1996, attending a baseball game in each of the 28 Major League stadiums.”

Wells Fargo Private Bank David Schelling, Wealth Advisor/ Senior Vice President 15760 Ventura Blvd. Suite 1250 Encino 805-777-6015

“Wells Fargo Private Bank is uniquely positioned in the wealth management industry to exceed the needs our clients because of the resources that we surround them with.”

A

s part of Wells Fargo Private Bank, David Schelling manages finances for high net worth clients by identifying their life goals and financial strategy and coordinating a team of specialists to implement a wealth plan that helps accomplish their life goals. David has worked in the wealth management industry for more than two decades and has been with Wells Fargo for more than six years. He and his wife, Jennifer, have been married for 18 years and have a 15-year-old daughter, Emma, who is a competitive dancer. David has served on the board of directors of The Cancer Support Community for nine years and participates in charity bike rides throughout the year. What makes your firm stand out in this industry? “Our people and our process. Wells Fargo Private Bank is uniquely positioned in the wealth management industry to exceed the needs our clients because of the resources that we surround them with. My role as a wealth advisor is to build a team of advisors that fit the financial needs of the client. Each advisor is a specialist in their area of expertise. If necessary, I will introduce a private banker, a portfolio manager, a trust officer or a wealth planning strategist. Most firms don’t provide that depth at the local level. In addition, our process is a continuous, interactive engagement that takes years to finetune as life events change needs and goals.” What is your most important strategy for building wealth? “Taking prudent risk. I work with a lot of business owners and real estate investors, and the one theme is their appetite for risk. Because they typically took significant risk to become wealthy, my role is to manage that risk and keep them wealthy. This involves developing a long-term wealth plan that takes into account their cash flow needs and expenses and making sure they are on track to achieve those cash flow needs in the future.” What are some of the most pressing challenges facing the financial industry today? “Wealth transfer over the next couple of decades will present both a challenge and an opportunity for our industry. Baby Boomers will transfer approximately $30 trillion in assets to their heirs. Historically, 70% of wealth is lost from the first generation to the second, and almost 90% from the second to the third. This demonstrates the enormous need for our clients to have a wealth plan to minimize the estate taxes that impact this transition. We work with our clients to make sure they and their children are prepared well in advance of

this event to maximize the amount of wealth that is transferred from their estate to either the next generation or to the philanthropic passion that is most important to them.” What is your professional “secret weapon”? “It is very simple: communication. I have no control over stock prices or interest rate changes, but I can control the communication I have with my clients. Proactive communication as well as being very responsive to client requests is critical to building trust and confidence. Clients want to hear from their advisors on a consistent basis—even if it is just to check in.” What’s the most common mistake people make with their money? “I am very fortunate to work with very interesting and successful families that have created wealth in a variety of ways. They are very passionate about their businesses or real estate portfolios but often don’t put that same effort into creating a wealth plan that will not only provide the necessary cash flow to maintain their lifestyle but also ensure the preservation of their legacy. A good plan is about more than just money; it is built around your core values and what matters most to you in life.” Tell us about your team of professionals. “The size of our team will vary based on the needs of our client. I work very closely with a senior private banker, Vladimir Victorio, who handles all of the lending and banking needs for our clients. A significant differentiator is our ability to manage investments on either the brokerage or fiduciary platforms where our advisors have decades of experience. If our clients need a corporate trustee, we have a trust officer on our team who can serve in a fiduciary capacity. I utilize the legal and accounting backgrounds of our wealth strategists to put a wealth plan in motion for clients and make sure we adjust the plan based on their life events.” Disclaimer: Investments in securities and insurance Products are: NOT FDIC-INSURED/ NO BANK GUARANTEES/ MAY LOSE VALUE. In our approach, there are no sales agendas, no proprietary products and no investment commissions. Our focus is on our clients’ best interest and overall well-being. We take a holistic approach and work with multiple generations of a family to ensure that the efforts of one generation leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.” Why does someone even need a financial planner? “Life is hectic. Few people have the time, desire and background to adequately address the complex financial questions a household faces. These questions entangle multiple areas of personal finance—tax, investments, estate planning—and making smart financial decisions requires collaboration among a team of professionals. A good financial planner not only brings planning expertise in all these areas but also leads this collaboration among experts. The results of this process can be dramatic improvement across the board.” How does someone know they can trust a financial planner? “The character of a professional is always the most important predictor of the quality and trustworthiness of professional advice. Know your advisor! Also important is to investigate the compensation structure of an advisory firm and to inquire whether the firm works exclusively as a fiduciary. If a firm is a fiduciary, an advisor’s recommendations must be guided solely by what is in the client’s best interest. If it does not operate as a fiduciary, an advisor may recommend products or strategies to a client that are merely ‘suitable.’ Some financial professionals set themselves up as both, meaning a client may not know whether a given recommendation is sales-motivated or made in their best interest. JDM operates exclusively as a fiduciary.”

80

VENTURA BLVD, MAY/JUNE 2017

How do your services differ from most other firms? “We are more comprehensive and have dual expertise in financial planning and investment management. Many firms have competence in one area or the other, but at JDM we offer expertise in both, which enables us to optimize overall advice to clients.” Does JDM specialize in any particular area of financial planning? “Yes, we specialize in preparing our clients for retirement and guiding them through its various stages. For Baby Boomers, this typically means working with them to refocus from raising children to preparing for retirement and planning their legacy. In more recent years, many of our new clients have been forward-thinking Gen Xers and Millennials who have indicated that making smarter financial decisions and planning for a secure retirement are top priorities. We’ve really enjoyed helping younger professionals get on the right path.” Is retirement planning different for someone in their mid-30s than it is for someone in their mid-50s? “Yes, for two main reasons. First, at a younger age planning can be more difficult for clients because it is harder for young adults to envision retirement and to determine their lifestyle priorities in advance. Secondly, for younger professionals multiple financial goals compete for limited resources, and therefore the challenge of setting priorities adds complexity to the process. An emptynest Baby Boomer, on the other hand, has goals that all revolve around the narrower question of how to prepare for a comfortable and secure retirement. Thus, planning for younger adults usually requires a broader understanding of personal finance as well as insight into a greater number of life cycle issues and stages.” Why should a Gen-Xer or Millennial choose JDM Financial Group? “We know how these generations want to be treated and want to experience financial advice. They want their interests to come first, they insist on fee-based fiduciary care, and they are seeking advice that creates a pathway to achieving real-life goals. Like them, we harbor a skepticism toward traditional financial services and are concerned about the role of Social Security in their retirement. The younger professionals we work with are practical thinkers and understand they will need to make smarter financial decisions to achieve long-term financial security. Our mission is to help them do just that.

s you plan your summer vacation with anticipation and excitement, imagine if you could have that “escape from the real world” feeling all year-long. What if you could live in surroundings that made you feel just as relaxed and content? A gorgeous, 7,100-square-foot Sherman Oaks gated estate, soon be coming on the market, offers that and more. The grand Colonial, built in 2008, has only had one owner – who has taken immaculate care of the house and grounds. The property is luxurious living at its best—perfect for raising a family and entertaining close friends as well as large crowds—all the while being situated in one of the Valley’s best south-of-the-Boulevard neighborhoods. With easy freeway access (both the 101 and the 405) the home is within walking distance of Ventura Boulevard’s top-notch restaurants, trendy bars and chic shops. ESTATE LIVING The sprawling grounds, on a 17,000-square-foot, corner lot, are the first thing to capture your attention. From the elegant “roundabout” at the entrance, ideal for greeting guests, to the expansive backyard/pool area, which is set off by handsome blue stone pavers, each area is a showcase of elegance and fine living. Every room boasts a view of lush flowering plants and fragrant fruit trees, offering a seamless distinction between indoors and outdoors. Thoughtful, drought-tolerant landscaping and a state-of-the-art irrigation system keep maintenance and water needs to a minimum. One Zen-like spot features a striking contemporary fountain, which faces a large rectangular swath of green that’s perfect for yoga class or meditation sessions. Wherever you are on the property— inside or out—you experience complete privacy and quiet. tion to detail. Architectural elements such as multi-paned panel windows, tapered door casings and wainscoting can be found throughout the home. The main two-story foyer sets an instantaneous tone of grandeur, yet there are numerous spaces in which one can feel cozy. The floor plan has terrific “flow” and includes a family room with intricate, coffered ceilings, a white brick fireplace, built-in bookshelves and a wall of French doors that open to a large patio and fire pit. The light-filled family room connects directly to a state-of-the art kitchen with adjoining breakfast room. Other highlights of the first floor include a formal dining room that can easily accommodate a table for 12 and a step-down living room with a full-size bar. Nearly every room opens to the outdoors, revealing verdant landscaping and numerous inviting seating areas. A long rectangular lanai—topped with sun-resistant Sunbrella fabric—is designed for grilling and dining. While the host mans a commercial-grade BBQ, guests can pull up to the counter on stools or lounge by the Caribbean-blue pool. The property also features a top-of-the-line sound system, making music accessible everywhere, from the living room to the citrus orchard. MASTERLY TOUCH The high-level of craftsmanship is on full display in the unique, spiral-effect staircase that leads to an extra-wide, second-floor landing overlooking the entryway. Here you’ll find a high-gloss, walnut-stained bannister to match the warm, walnut floors and decorative shadowbox molding on the walls. At the end of the long hall, discover something that is more “sleeping sanctuary” than mere master bedroom. An enchanting sitting area with a brick fireplace leads to the spacious main room with a 15-foot, beamed ceiling and three walls of windows. French doors open to a 20-foot balcony overlooking the backyard. Marble is the unifying texture in the master bath—covering the walls of the steam shower, the twin vanities and the floor. Designer-finished hardware adorns the fixtures. A large walk-in closet keeps everything for him and her organized and within reach. SPECIAL ADDITION One of the most unique aspects of the home is the detached area that could be an additional office, a studio or a guest house. Walk down an outdoor breezeway on the second floor and you come to this delightful and surprising addition. The separate entrance and back door exit make it a functional space rarely found in a single- family dwelling. An en suite bathroom completes the package. Coming home to this gated, secure Shangri-La is the possibility you haven’t dreamed of until now. It is more than a house. It’s a canvas waiting for your family and friends to paint memories. 

What A Girl Wants…Really Boiling down the essence of a good man Written by Kathleen Laccinole Illustrated by Christine Georgiades

I

t’s a question on par with the meaning of life, the existence of god and the reality of time: What do women want in men? When I asked my son, “What do you think a woman wants in a man?” he responded, “Someone who owns a chainsaw; who doesn’t drink out of a straw; and who is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent [aka The Boy Scout Law].” Polling my girlfriends, I determined he’s mostly correct. We confuse you. We confound you. Yet with one kiss you have the power to fluster us with teenaged butterflies and make our hearts soar. So we keep coming back, searching and hoping … and you keep wondering what in the world we want. We want a tree. At the age of 13, I knew exactly what I wanted in a man. I made a list in my Jan Brady diary, whilst lolling on my bed, radio tuned to KIIS FM. I knew the color of your hair, your eyes, the sort of music you played on your Gibson guitar, your preferred surfboard and the exact make of your car: shallow, schoolgirl ideas as frivolous as the leaves on a tree that flit to the ground each autumn. In college, my list shifted to your career goals, hobbies, friends, political affiliation, the movies you liked, the books you read, common interests … These were your branches; the trunk that held you up, that would hold me as well. But trunks can split and crack and be cut down. Branches are just that—mere offshoots that sprout and grow from who you really are. I’d yet to determine who that was; what I really wanted.

VENTURA BLVD, MAY/JUNE 2017

In the life of a tree, leaves die and blow away, trunks sway, bend and even break, but it’s the roots that dig deep and grow where they are planted. It is the roots that hold up the tree that will shelter me from storms, shade me from sun, hold a swing for our children and give me flowers in the spring. (I’m a girl. I like flowers.) Humor trumps possessions. Ambition trumps wealth. Honor trumps success. Authenticity trumps fame. Integrity and kindness trump all else. And a gentleman is a gentleman is a gentleman. Meet me at my level through the chaos of a day. Sit with me on the porch at twilight. Connect. Be there. Then be brave and stay there—because women want a strong man, not a tough man. Revere us. Cherish us. Love us. Don’t steal our hearts. Win our hearts. Be the man I can respect and I will be a better person. Be the better person, so I can look up to you. And I will rise up to meet you. Up at the top of that tree … with butterflies.  Kathleen Laccinole is a freelance writer who pens a column about dating as a single mom under the pseudonym P. Charlotte Lindsay.
