Letter from the Editor Ah, summer! Sure, the month of May has been cooler and wetter than most years (we’re not blaming you, Damon Lane, David Payne, and Mike Morgan…but we do have our eyes on you). Now it’s time to get outdoors and enjoy all that our area has to offer. This month marks the return of our annual Summer Events Guide. This year’s guide feels a bit smaller than most years. That’s mostly because a lot of organizations and businesses are still working out their post-pandemic summer schedules. Still, we think this year’s Guide will give you a great starting point for finding fun and family-friendly events. Be safe out there, friends! And enjoy the Summer of 2021!

n today's always moving, always busy world, it seems that "doing" is the perceived winning strategy for success. However, there is a flaw in living life only by this theory; you miss out on savoring all that life has for you. E.B. White, the author of such literacy classics as Stuart Little and Charlotte's Webb, said, "Every morning I awake torn between a desire to save the world and an inclination to savor it. This makes it hard to plan the day. But, if we forget to savor the world, what possible reason do we have for saving it? In a way, the savoring must come first." Dental Innovations’ New Office Designed for Maximum Patient Comfort anxiety that people might be feeling by making the whole process as comforting as possible.” Shirley planned the new Dental Innovations building to present a clean and warm atmosphere to patients at every point of their visit. That includes the reception area, the consult room, and the clinical areas. It’s also home to the latest technology available to patients seeking all types of dental care. “I’ve always been a technology enthusiast,” said Shirley, “That means I want always to utilize the latest technology to make our services more comfortable and efficient for our patients. One of those is our CEREC crown machine which can turn a three-week crown procedure into a 90-minute, one-time office visit.”

The CEREC crown technology used CAD technology to capture a 3D image of the tooth and then design and create a custom crown for that tooth in short order. The CEREC crown machine allows Shirley and his staff to bypass the old and messy process of traditional impressions and weeks of waiting. They can prepare the tooth, create a perfect crown, and attach it in one visit. “Being able to do a same-day crown is a game-changer for patients,” said Shirley. “We also use a high-end CT scanner to help us create a virtual model of your mouth to help us spot problems, plan procedures, and get a look at your teeth in a way that wouldn’t be possible without surgery.”

s Dr. Mark Shirley reflects on why he became a dentist, he says he never had one of those significant revelatory moments cited by some people.

“I didn’t have some crazy, traumatic experience as a kid visiting his dentist,” said Shirley. “But what I did have was a great respect for my dentist growing up, and that impacted me when I got to college and was trying to decide on my medical career.” Shirley says that he knew he wanted to be in the medical field but settled on dentistry for two straightforward reasons. The first has to do with the value he places on his family. “I wanted something that would give me both a good income and enough autonomy to be able to take time off to be with my family,” said Shirley. But he adds that the role of a dentist fits perfectly with his desire to serve patients in a critical area of need. “I guess most people think dentistry is just about treating teeth,” said Shirley. “That’s important, but it’s also critical to remember that teeth are attached to a human being, and getting to know someone is an important part of my role as a dentist.” That attitude has had an impact on Shirley’s practice 18 | MOORE MONTHLY | JUNE 2021

over the years. His professional journey began after graduation from dental school in 2002, and he started practicing as an associate in Kingfisher. After two years, he moved to a practice in Southwest Oklahoma City until he started his own practice in 2008. “It’s been great that I’ve had patients who have followed me from when I first landed in Oklahoma City,” said Shirley. “I’m honored that they have continued to trust me as their dentist to the point where our patient base feels like family.” Shirley says it’s that family feeling about his patients that led him to open his new offices on SW 134th Street in January of this year. He’s excited for patients to experience the difference they’ll find at Dental Innovations’ new home. “Let’s be honest, no one really looks forward to coming to see their dentist,” said Shirley. “What we wanted to do with our new building is to create a warm and caring environment. I think what we have now helps lower the

Boundaries – What are They & How do I Establish Them? What are boundaries? All relationships need boundaries. A boundary is an imaginary line that separates me from you. They separate your physical space, your feelings, needs, and responsibilities from others. Your boundaries also tell other people how they can treat you – what is acceptable and what is not. Without boundaries, people may take advantage of you. That's because you have not set limits about how you expect to be treated. In short, boundaries help you define what you are comfortable with and how you would like to be treated by others. Boundaries also keep you from overextending yourself. You cannot take on every project, work every shift, or be on every committee that you are asked to join. Boundaries mean saying "no" to things that do not align with your priorities. Whether it is with a friend, spouse, neighbor, or boss, relationships function best when we know what is expected. When you communicate your boundaries, people understand how they are expected to behave. When expectations are not communicated and met, resentment and anger grow. Emotional boundaries involve separating your feelings from another's feelings. Violations include: • • • • •

Taking responsibility for another's feelings. Letting another's feelings dictate your own. Sacrificing your own needs to please another. Blaming others for your problems. Accepting responsibility for theirs.

People who lack boundaries never learned to separate the needs of others from their own. 10 Ways to Build and Preserve Better Boundaries Boundaries are essential to healthy relationships and, really, a healthy life. Setting and sustaining boundaries is a skill. Unfortunately, it is a skill that many of us do not learn. We might pick up pointers here and there from experience or through watching others. But for many of us, boundary-building is a relatively new concept and a challenging one. Having healthy boundaries means "knowing and understanding what your limits are. 1. Name your limits. You cannot set good boundaries if you are unsure of where you stand. So, identify your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual limits. Consider what you can tolerate and accept and what makes you feel uncomfortable or stressed. Those feelings help us identify what our limits are.

2. Tune into your feelings. Two key feelings in others that are red flags or cues that we are letting go of our boundaries: discomfort and resentment. Thinking of these feelings on a continuum from one to ten. Six to ten is in the higher zone. If you are at the higher end of this continuum, during an interaction or in a situation, ask yourself, what is causing that? What is it about this interaction or the person's expectation that is bothering me? Resentment usually comes from being taken advantage of or not appreciated. It is often a sign that we push ourselves beyond our limits because we feel guilty (and want to be a good daughter or wife, for instance), or someone else is imposing their expectations, views, or values on us. 3. Be direct. With some people, maintaining healthy boundaries does not require a direct and clear-cut dialogue. Usually, this is the case if people are similar in their communication styles, views, personalities, and general approach to life. They will approach each other similarly. With others, such as those who have a different personality or cultural background, you will need to be more direct about your boundaries. Consider the following example: one person feels [that] challenging someone's opinions is a healthy way of communicating, but this feels disrespectful and tense to another person. 4. Give yourself permission. Fear, guilt, and self-doubt are big potential pitfalls. We might fear the other person's response if we set and enforce our boundaries. We might feel guilty by speaking up or saying no to a family member. Boundaries are not just a sign of a healthy relationship; they are a sign of self-respect. So, give yourself the permission to set boundaries and work to preserve them. 5. Practice self-awareness. Again, boundaries are all about homing in on your feelings and honoring them. If you notice yourself slipping and not sustaining your boundaries, ask yourself: What is changed? Consider - What I am doing or [what is] the other person doing? Then, mull over your options: What am I going to do about the situation? Over what do I have control?

6. Consider your past and present. How you were raised, and your role in your family can become additional obstacles in setting and preserving boundaries. If you held the caretaker role, you learned to focus on others, letting yourself be drained emotionally or physically. 7. Make self-care a priority. Self-care also means recognizing the importance of your feelings and honoring them. These feelings serve as important cues about our wellbeing and about what makes us happy and unhappy. Putting yourself first also gives you the energy, peace of mind, and a positive outlook to be more present with others and be there for them. 8. Seek support. If you have a hard time with boundaries, seek some support, whether [that's a] support group, church, counseling, coaching, or good friends. With friends or family, you can even prioritize each other to practice setting boundaries together [and] hold each other accountable. 9. Be assertive. We know that it is not enough to create boundaries; we must follow through. Even though we know intellectually that people are not mind readers, we still expect others to know what hurts us. Since they do not, it is essential to assertively communicate with the other person when they have crossed a boundary. Respectfully, let the other person know what is bothersome to you and that you can work together to address it. 10. Start small. Like any new skill, assertively communicating your boundaries takes practice. Start with a small boundary that is not threatening to you and incrementally increasing to more challenging boundaries. Build upon your success, and [at first] try not to take on something that feels overwhelming. In summary, success in business & life is greatly determined by the health & strength of our relationships. Understanding how to build & preserve boundaries (A learned skill) is a foundational skill set to develop & maintain healthy relationships.

Tina Fitzgerald Career & College Connection Coordinator Tina Fitzgerald is a Career and College Connections Coordinator at Moore Norman Technology Center. Her role and passion for helping connect students to their brightest future possible. She has been with Moore Norman Technology for more than 20 years.

What is the mission and focus of the Career & College Connections area? Our focus is to work with all the long-term program areas at Moore Norman Technology Center to prepare their students for future employment and future education opportunities upon completing their courses here. Some of the things we teach students are resume building, interviewing skills, social media and its impact on employability, and employer expectations. We also train students to work a career fair effectively.

MNTC's Career & College Connections is a unique and pioneering approach to working with students. Can you expand on that? The goal of our work with students is to prepare them for a career. That's our interactive focus over the entire time they are with us. We go into every long-term program and teach classes; we bring in employer panels, hold a career fair, and much more. We also do mock interviews with students and teach resume building. We have even developed our own resume

builder, portfolio builder, and job posting site. It's specifically designed to serve Moore Norman students best. We try to make strong connections with employers. The hardest thing in the job-seeking process is to get in front of employers. You have to have a great resume to be selected to get the interview, and you have to get the interview to get the job. We try to best prepare our students for life after their time at Moore Norman.

How does your department work to benefit employers? I believe employers that work with us to hire our students benefit them in several ways. They have come to know that students hired from our program will be professional, competent in their area of expertise, and possess the "soft skills" to be great employees. Also, through our employers/student portal, employers can post jobs, and our students can directly apply for them. That means the resumes that employers are receiving align with the type of skills and employees they need.

I love when employers call and say I've hired a couple of your students, and now I'd like to hire a couple more.

Family and Servant’s Heart Drive Local Veteran’s Life “I was trained as an aircraft mechanic for the F-4 Phantoms and did a tour at Camron Bay in Vietnam,” said McGrew. “Did that for three years, and then I came back home to the states where I met my wife.” After three years as a mechanic, McGrew trained as a flight engineer on C-130 aircraft. He says the change of roles was when he really fell in love with the Air Force.

ony McGrew knows what it means to be in a big family. He was the next-to-youngest child among 13 siblings growing up in Mississippi.

“I got to travel all over the world to places most people never see,” said McGrew. “We flew along the Berlin Corridor and behind the Iron Curtain on embassy runs during the Cold War. I had so many great friends, and our kids all grew up together.”

“We were real farmers in a little town called Clayton,” said McGrew. “We moved to Charleston, South Carolina when I was about three years old and then back to Mississippi after he died about five years later.”

McGrew transitioned to a career in real estate after four years and retired from that job in April of 2021. After he left the military, he says his desire to serve fellow veterans and younger service members and women led him to involvement with the VFW and the American Legion. “We didn’t really get a lot of respect when we came home from Viet Nam,” said McGrew. “After 9-11, I saw all these younger kids going to Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places, and I felt like I could maybe help them and some of the veterans who had served with me.” McGrew is transitioning from a role as the Commander of Moore VFW Post 8706 to a new role as the State Commander. He also holds a position with the national VFW leading veterans military service in the state of Oklahoma.

As his siblings grew older and moved away, McGrew’s mother decided to move him and his little sister back to South Carolina. It was there that he finished high school. During that time, he would spend time in Myrtle Beach with an older brother, who was in the Air Force. “Three of my brothers had joined the military,” said McGrew. “Two were in the Army, and the one closest to my age was in the Air Force. When I was around 16, I used to stay with him in the barracks and pal around. I saw what life in the Air Force is like and thought, ‘This is what I wanna do, and I’ll make a career out of it.’”

“They were building a new facility up at Tinker,” said McGrew, “So we spent three years in Waco before moving up I-35, and I’ve been in Oklahoma since.”

“We do yellow ribbons for the guard when they come back home,” said McGrew. “We also do family days and all kinds of service for the military and the general community. We bought a generator for the Westmoore High School band so that they could power their electrical equipment of the football field.”

His final stop in his 22+ year Air Force career was in a small Florida town named Lake City. McGrew and his team performed test flights on C-130’s after they went through maintenance. When he finally retired, he worked for McDonnell-Douglas in Waco, helping the military make the transition from the C-130’s to newer 707 jets.

His passion for fellow veterans and the local community runs deep, and he hopes that everyone appreciates those who have served as well as those who continue to serve in today’s volunteer military. “I hope everyone understands that the reason these folks do what they do is the love of their country and the love for our people,” said McGrew.

Norman Regional Offers First Post-COVID-19 Recovery Program in Oklahoma

orman Regional is the first health system in Oklahoma to provide a Post-COVID-19 Recovery Program.

The program is offered at Norman Regional's Pulmonary Clinic, located inside Robinson Medical Plaza at 701 E. Robinson St., Suite 100 in Norman. The clinic's new program addresses medical conditions as they emerge in patients experiencing extended or severe post-COVID-19 symptoms. The program provides a multidisciplinary assessment, treatment, and resources for patients recovering from mild to severe or extended COVID-19. These patients are also known as having "Post COVID-19 Syndrome." "This program is meant to encompass every aspect that could affect someone with COVID," said Sergio Garcia, MD, a board-certified pulmonologist with Norman Regional's Pulmonary Clinic. "It's crucial to treat the pulmonary complications, but it also affects other areas like the cardiac system, and it can cause emotional or psychological issues that are often neglected, but need to be addressed." The effects of COVID-19 can last for extended amounts of time. Patients with Post COVID-19 Syndrome have recovered from the worst impact of COVID-19 and now have a negative test. However, it's possible they may continue to present symptoms that interfere with the their daily functions. About 10% of COVID-19 patients develop Post COVID-19 Syndrome. In Norman Regional's primary service area, there were approximately 34,063 positive COVID-19 tests in 2020, resulting in approximately 3,406 of these patients developing Post COVID-19 Syndrome. "I feel confident that they can get things under control," said Erin Contreras, a patient with the Post-COVID-19 Recovery Program. "The appointment I had gave me hope, and maybe hope is the best medicine because I've been feeling great."

The Post-COVID-19 Recovery Program will assist patients with re-entrance to the community and ensure continuity of care. The exact nature of ongoing deficits remains uncertain, as the needs will be tracked over time. Patients can self-refer and need to have a recent chest X-ray and schedule a Pulmonary Function Test with the clinic the same day as the appointment. SUMMER SPORTS CAMPS Most summer sports camps run Monday-Friday 9 a.m. - Noon unless specified differently upon sign up. Sports camps are open to boys and girls ages 6-12 years old. ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT FRED JONES JR. MUSEUM OF ART Long Exposure – A Century of Pictorialism Now – June 27 Pictorialism, an international photographic movement that emerged late in the nineteenth century in Europe and soon spread to the United States, argued for photography’s status as a fine art through the adoption of techniques and subjects associated with painting. After its invention around 1830, photography was generally believed to objectively depict the natural world. In the early 1840s, however, Scottish photographers David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson began making portraits that period viewers compared to the style of Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn. By 1870, Henry Peach Robinson, Julia Margaret Cameron, and other British photographers sought to distinguish the medium from science. To that end, they modeled their images after Impressionist paintings, used special filters, and manipulated negatives to achieve a painterly effect. While the movement waned in the 1910s, this exhibition demonstrates Pictorialism’s lasting influence on amateurs, art photographers, Hollywood portraitists, and photographers of the American West. Long Exposure traces Pictorialism’s nineteenth-century beginnings to the present day, when contemporary artists and photographers continue to manipulate photographic images to create new art. FRED JONES JR. MUSEUM OF ART A Life in Looking June 24 – December 31 The renowned art historian Dr. Creighton Eddy Gilbert (1924–2011), a scholar of Italian Renaissance art and one of the foremost authorities on Michelangelo, spent nearly seven decades dedicated to scholarship, collecting, and teaching. An academic prodigy, Gilbert entered college at age 14, became a professor at 21, and eventually completed a doctorate from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts in 1955. Following positions at the Ringling Museum, Brandeis University, Queens College, Harvard University, and Cornell University, he joined the faculty of Yale University in 1981. In addition to his work mentoring students—many of whom 48 | MOORE MONTHLY | JUNE 2021

went on to achieve acclaim as art historians and curators in their own right—Gilbert served as editor-in-chief of the leading art history journal Art Bulletin between 1980 and 1985 and published extensively. He penned numerous books and articles on Caravaggio, realism in Renaissance art, and the Northern Baroque, as well as two seminal works: Michelangelo: On and Off the Sistine Ceiling (1994) and Caravaggio and His Two Cardinals (1995). Gilbert also collected, taking particular delight in discovering works by major artists hidden away in Italian print shops and especially in his acquisition of a jewel-like Madonna and Child by the Renaissance master Romanino. In 2005, Dr. Eric Lee, a former student of Gilbert’s and then-director of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, encouraged his mentor to leave his private collection to the museum. The bequest, 272 objects, spans the fourteenth to twentieth centuries with an emphasis on Old Master prints and drawings from the Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo periods. Gilbert’s wide-ranging interests are evident in this exhibition, guest curated by University of Oklahoma art history faculty members Dr. Allison Palmer and Dr. Erin Duncan-O’Neill. Through themes of religion, architecture, allegory, portraiture, and humor, A Life in Looking: The Creighton Gilbert Collection explores a collection built on seven decades of expertise by this influential scholar, educator, and connoisseur.

In 2021, Fowlkes had three students who competed in the virtual National Archery Championships in early May. Fifth-grader Ethan Do took third place in that national competition out of 1903 shooters. Ethan is also a two-time Oklahoma Boys State Archery champion. Madison Durrett (fourth-grade) and Olivia Kent (fifth-grade) also finished in the top 64 out of 1549 shooters. The team finished third overall in the state of Oklahoma this year. Fowlkes says that kind of success comes from a lot of hard work by these youngsters. "We practice anywhere between 12 and 14 hours a week," said Fowlkes. "We get here for practice before teachers get here, and we're staying here till most everybody's gone except for the custodians." For those who wonder how elementary-aged kids can maintain that kind of focus in a day and age when video games and streaming services seem to be shortening attention spans, Do says the answer is pretty simple. Do says that he and his young teammates experience the fatigue that comes with the long hours of practice. They all plan to enjoy their summer and other pursuits. But when it comes time to pick up the bow in the fall, they'll continue to be motivated by the things that count most.
