ABOUT SPECIAL OLYMPICS LAKE NORMAN Our Mission
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. We provide them with opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, develop skills, and establish friendships with their families and other members of the Special Olympics athletes’ community.
Our Athletes
Our athletes range from 2 years old to adulthood, and their families have become a large extended LKSNO family.
Our Volunteers
Our volunteers are community leaders and citizens who all share a passion for giving back.
Our Audience
Individuals who attend Special Olympics Lake Norman events vary in age and come from all walks of life.
HOW TO BE AN ATHLETE Welcome to Special Olympics Lake Norman!
We are glad to have you as part of our group. All activities provided by Special Olympics are free of charge and only require a participation packet to be completed and on file prior to the first activity. Athletes 7 and under Athletes 7 and under may participate in the Young Athletes programs. Athletes must complete a 2-page Young Athletes participation form signed by a parent or guardian. Activities will be scheduled throughout the school year and signups will be shared on our Facebook page and on the Town of Mooresville Parks & Recreation programs page. Athletes 8 and older Athletes 8 and older may participate on our competitive teams throughout the year. Most practices are held evenings and weekends so all participants can attend. Athletes must complete the 6-page athlete participation packet with a medical professional’s signature prior to participation.

VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Special Olympics Lake Norman. There are several roles within the program, and we hope you can find your perfect fit!
ROLES WITHIN THE PROGRAM INCLUDE: Unified Partner A unified partner is a volunteer who participates in the sport with athletes in team-based sport such as golf, swim, bocce ball, basketball, or bowling. Sports Assistant A sports assistant helps with the sport at the direction of the coaches. Coach (Head or assistant) Heads or assists the head coach in providing instruction in a specific sport. Chaperones Additional volunteers in a sport who can oversee and keep our 4:1 ratio number. They must attend some practices and know the athletes well. They may be asked to drive a rented vehicle and transport athletes.
Lake Norm
Administrative Volunteers Volunteers in administrative roles may help with fundraising, social events, and office related items. Team Parent Assists the head coach of a sport with paperwork, arranges snacks/water (if needed) with staff, and keeps the medical forms available. The team parent keeps up with the first aid kit and additional items needed for the team. Volunteers 18+ May serve in any role within the program, with the proper training grid items completed. Volunteers 14-17 May serve as a Unified Partner, sports assistant, or administrative volunteer position. Volunteers under 14 May serve as a unified partner only.
