WE MAGAZINE | 3

Welcome to WE Magazine. I am Colette Martin the Vice President. I am so excited to be part of bringing to the forefront a magazine that will highlight Women in business.

It’s February! A month of love, and celebration of the achievements of African Americans. Love comes in many forms, but self-love is so important. It is honoring yourself and rewarding yourself. No one is perfect yet we abuse ourselves with constant negativity. We doubt our abilities and point the finger at mishaps and misfortunes. Society has done that enough to us. So why do we continue to do that to ourselves? We live in a world that likes to blame somebody for something. Holding ourselves accountable for our mistakes takes guts. It’s hard, very hard. No one wants to be considered a “failure”. But that’s not being a failure. We have to grow by making mistakes. In those mistakes, we should be learning. Love is hard. We love hard, but we fail to love…kind. Kind to ourselves. We first must love ourselves. Yes, our faults and our flaws. In loving ourselves we begin to realize how to love. Then loving others becomes easier.

In celebrating African Americans, we love their work. They endured the long haul to all types of criticisms, nay-sayers and probably the voices inside telling them they couldn’t do it. But, they did. You see love comes from within. Being happy with who you are, and the way God created…YOU. We are uniquely made and should celebrate our difference, our uniqueness. So, for the month of February, celebrate with Love the person in the mirror! Flaws, scars and all. Embrace our History. Work on making it better. Work on adding to it. Realize that as women we can do whatever we put our minds to. Set your sights on developing ourselves, loving ourselves and creating more moments in History. Madame Vice President Harris, you made History. Congratulations! Please feel comfortable in contacting us at: Businessinpearls@gmail.com. Our next issue is waiting. So don’t delay. Contact us. Hope to meet you in WE Magazine. Regards, Colette Martin (Soror, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.) WE Magazine Vice President

Tracy Gibbs

“ I hope you find yourself in one of these natural high-quality wigs; find your fun, sexy, sophisticated, classy you. Find the beauty inside of you. It is beautiful being you!” -Tracy Tracy is a native of Oklahoma who resides in the city of Tulsa with her husband and children. She’s a Health Information Management Supervisor and Hospital HIPAA Privacy Officer. She’s also a motivated business professional and entrepreneur who has served as a keynote speaker around the country. Tracy has a 30 + year background in the healthcare industry and 20 years in the real estate industry. She had a desire to start a family owned business in the North Tulsa community (Gibbs Next Generation), where her focus is economic stability and growth. In addition, she serves on the City of Tulsa FEC (Financial Empowerment Center) Board and the North Tulsa Community Coalition Board, which is affiliated with the Tulsa Health Department. Among other community service leadership positions and roles Tracy had another desire to start something personal to her…Her own Hair shop.

Tracy shares her journey on what made her do what she was presented with in her life to help other women. Tracy can you tell us a little more about yourself and why you created Beautiful You?... I’m a wife, mother, grandmother, business owner, healthcare worker and community volunteer, but most of all I’m a believer in Jesus Christ. I started my business to inspire and encourage other women to move past self-doubt and fear and reach for their dreams.

Beautiful You was developed during the menopausal season of my life. My story, at age 43 I had my last child, a son, it was the most enjoyable exciting time of my life; I felt so beautiful. I had minimal weight gain and my hair had grown healthier and longer than it has ever been. However, this was short lived. I had no idea that I was pre-menopausal, and would begin losing my hair by each stroke of the brush. It was if I woke up one morning and my hair was thin, short and dull.

After years of struggling with my hair my oldest daughter encouraged me to go natural at age 49. She also introduced me to weaves to help me during this unfamiliar territory of being a natural hair girl. I have been perming my hair practically all my life, so going natural was going to be a journey, so I thought. To my surprise, 3 years later my hair is thicker and longer than it’s ever been. I love being a natural girl!! I also found out how much I love wigs and how much fun they are.

From then to now, at 54 post menopause, I realize my journey taught me how I should love myself more and how beautiful I am despite of life’s challenges and circumstances and when those weird moments of doubt, fear and lack of confidence show up I can look at the beauty inside of me. Hence, the beginning of Beautiful You. It’s about the beauty inside of you.

Tracy’s online shop includes Wigs, Weaves and Lashes! Yes, her products are beautiful and so real looking. Congratulations! You can visit her online shop at www.beautifulbeingyou.com

What is Love? God's Love God's love provides the answer. All we have to do is respond in faith and commitment. The Bible says about Jesus: "That as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those that believe on His name" (John 1:12). God sent His only Son, Jesus, to die in our place. But that is not where the story ends. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead. As God, He is alive today and wants to put His love in your heart. Once you accept Him, you will be amazed at what He can do in your life and in your relationships. God's word tells us, "He who believes in the Son (Jesus Christ) has eternal life, but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him" (John 3:36). What God wants for us is to have life, not only for today, but for eternity. If we choose to reject Him, then we have chosen sin's consequence which is death and eternal separation from Him. It is the reception of Jesus Christ, receiving Him into our lives and trusting in Him, that brings our lives into balance. Faith in God unleashes the forgiveness of God. No more hiding, and no more going our own way. He is right there with us. We have peace with Him. After we place our faith and dependence on Him, He takes up residence within our lives and we have intimacy with Him. His forgiveness is there to cleanse us from the deepest sin, the deepest self-centeredness, the deepest problem or struggle we ever had or will have. Throughout the Bible, God's attitude toward sex is very clear. God has reserved sex for marriage and marriage only. Not because He wants to make us miserable, but because He wants to protect our hearts. He wants to build a secure base for us so that when we enter into a marriage, its intimacy can be based upon the security of God's love and wisdom. Remember, Love Never Needs to say Sorry!! www.DrCheriMoore.com

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY A SPECIAL GIFT OF HISTORY WE Magazine

The Candy is sweeter, the day after because it will be half price or wait until it’s at least 75% off.

Every year, the fourteenth day of the month of February has millions across the world presenting their loved ones with candy, flowers, chocolates, and other lovely gifts and presents. In many countries, restaurants and romantic dining experiences, are seen to be filled with couples who are eager to celebrate their relationship and the joy of their togetherness through delectable delights. We have been brainwashed into thinking that we need to get flowers and cards and chocolate delights to prove that we have a lover or that we are loved. Well, I feel it is my duty to call BS as loudly as I can. Check my logic: If you have to jam everything into One Single Solitaire Day; how does that prove that someone loves someone? Please don’t fall into the “Trappings” that you must get and or give someone trinkets to show and share your “love”. The Candy is sweeter, the day after because it will be half price or wait until it’s at least 75% off.

The reason behind all of this is a kindly cleric named Valentine who died more than a thousand years ago. Here is some History:
It is not exactly known why the 14th of February is known as Valentine's Day or if the noble Valentine really had any relation to this day. The history of Valentine's Day is impossible to be obtained from any archive and the veil of centuries gone by has made the origin behind this day more difficult to trace. It is only some legends that are our source for the history of Valentine's Day.

The modern St. Valentine's Day celebrations are said to have been derived from both ancient Christian and Roman traditions. As per one legend, the holiday has originated from the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia/Lupercalia, a fertility celebration that used to observed annually on February 15. But the rise of Christianity in Europe saw many pagan holidays being renamed for and dedicated to the early Christian martyrs. Lupercalia was no exception. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius turned Lupercalia into a Christian feast day and set its observance a day earlier, on February 14. He proclaimed February 14 to be the feast day in honor of Saint Valentine, a Roman martyr who lived in the 3rd century. It is this St. Valentine whom the modern Valentine's Day honors. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints by the name of Valentine. While one was a priest in Rome, another was a bishop in Terni. Nothing is known about the third St. Valentine except that he met his end in Africa. Surprisingly, all three of them were said to have been martyred on 14th February.

It is clear that Pope Gelasius intended to honor the first of these three aforementioned men. Most scholars believe that this St. Valentine was a priest who lived around 270 AD in Rome and attracted the disfavor of Roman emperor Claudius II who ruled during this time. The story of St. Valentine has two different versions - the Protestant and the Catholic one. Both versions agree upon Saint Valentine being a bishop who held secret marriage ceremonies of soldiers in opposition to Claudius II who had prohibited marriage for young men and was executed by the latter. During the lifetime of Valentine, the golden era of Roman empire had almost come to an end. Lack of quality administrators led to frequent civil strife. Education declined, taxation increased and trade witnessed a very bad time. The Roman empire faced crisis from all sides, from the Gauls, Slavs, Huns, Turks and Mongolians from Northern Europe and Asia. The empire had grown too large to be shielded from external aggression and internal chaos with existing forces. Naturally, more and more capable men were required to to be recruited as soldiers and officers to protect the nation from takeover. When Claudius became the emperor, he felt that married men were more emotionally attached to their families, and thus, will not make good soldiers. He believed that marriage made the men weak. So he issued an edict forbidding marriage to assure quality soldiers. The ban on marriage was a great shock for the Romans. But they dared not voice their protest against the mighty emperor.

The kindly bishop Valentine also realized the injustice of the decree. He saw the trauma of young lovers who gave up all hopes of being united in marriage. He planned to counter the monarch's orders in secrecy. Whenever lovers thought of marrying, they went to Valentine who met them afterward in a secret place and joined them in the sacrament of matrimony. And thus he secretly performed many marriages for young lovers. But such things cannot remain hidden for long. It was only a matter of time before Claudius came to know of this "friend of lovers," and had him arrested. While awaiting his sentence in prison, Valentine was approached by his jailor, Asterius. It was said that Valentine had some saintly abilities and one of them granted him the power to heal people. Asterius had a blind daughter and knowing of the miraculous powers of Valentine he requested the latter to restore the sight of his blind daughter. The Catholic legend has it that Valentine did this through the vehicle of his strong faith, a phenomenon refuted by the Protestant version which agrees otherwise with the Catholic one. Whatever the fact, it appears that Valentine in some way did succeed to help Asterius' blind daughter. When Claudius II met Valentine, he was said to have been impressed by the dignity and conviction of the latter. However, Valentine refused to agree with the emperor regarding the ban on marriage. It is also said that the emperor tried to convert Valentine to the Roman gods but was unsuccessful in his efforts. Valentine refused to recognize Roman Gods and even attempted to convert the emperor, knowing the consequences fully. This angered Claudius II who gave the order of execution of Valentine.

It is clear that Pope Gelasius intended to honor the first of these three aforementioned men. Most scholars believe that this St. Valentine was a priest who lived around 270 AD in Rome and attracted the disfavor of Roman emperor Claudius II who ruled during this time. Meanwhile, a deep friendship had been formed between Valentine and Asterius' daughter. It caused great grief to the young girl to hear of his friend's imminent death. It is said that just before his execution, Valentine asked for a pen and paper from his jailor, and signed a farewell message to her "From Your Valentine," a phrase that lived forever after. As per another legend, Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his jailer during his imprisonment. However, this legend is not given much importance by historians. The most plausible story surrounding St. Valentine is one not centered on Eros (passionate love) but on agape (Christian love): he was martyred for refusing to renounce his religion. Valentine is believed to have been executed on February 14, 270 AD. Thus 14th February became a day for all lovers and Valentine became its Patron Saint. It began to be annually observed by young Romans who offered handwritten greetings of affection, known as Valentines, on this day to the women they admired. With the coming of Christianity, the day came to be known as St. Valentine's Day. But it was only during the 14th century that St. Valentine's Day became definitively associated with love. UCLA medieval scholar Henry Ansgar Kelly, author of "Chaucer and the Cult of Saint Valentine", credits Chaucer as the one who first linked St. Valentine's Day with romance. In medieval France and England it was believed that birds mated on February 14.

Hence, Chaucer used the image of birds as the symbol of lovers in poems dedicated to the day. In Chaucer's "The Parliament of Fowls," the royal engagement, the mating season of birds, and St. Valentine's Day are related: "For this was on St. Valentine's Day, When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate." By the Middle Ages, Valentine became as popular as to become one of the most popular saints in England and France. Despite attempts by the Christian church to sanctify the holiday, the association of Valentine’s Day with romance and courtship continued through the Middle Ages. The holiday evolved over the centuries. By the 18th century, giftgiving and exchanging hand-made cards on Valentine's Day had become common in England. Hand-made valentine cards made of lace, ribbons, and featuring cupids and hearts began to be created on this day and handed over to the man or woman one loved. This tradition eventually spread to the American colonies. It was not until the 1840s that Valentine's Day greeting cards began to be commercially produced in the U.S. The first American Valentine's Day greeting cards were created by Esther A. Howlanda Mount Holyoke, a graduate and native of Worcester. Mass. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap". It was when Howland began Valentine's cards in a large scale that the tradition really caught on in the United States.

Today, Valentine's Day is one of the major holidays in the U.S. and has become a booming commercial success. According to the Greeting Card Association, 25% of all cards sent each year are "valentine"s. The "valentines", as Valentine's Day cards are better known, are often designed with hearts to symbolize love. The Valentine's Day card spread with Christianity and is now celebrated all over the world. One of the earliest valentines was sent in 1415 AD by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife during his imprisonment in the Tower of London. The card is now preserved in the British Museum. There may be doubts regarding the actual identity of Valentine, but we know that he really existed because archaeologists have recently unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to a Saint Valentine. This Special Day of “Love”, to me is really kinda sad. After realizing the History of it all; is it something that you really want to Celebrate? The execution of someone named Valentine because he refused to renounce his religion? Well, Happy Valentines Day- if you are into that sort of thing. As for me and my love; our current way of Celebrating is every day, 365 Days of kisses, hugs, passionate glances, and a trinket and a smile as the mood dictates. Oh, and a slice of Cheesecake! Yes, that is the ticket!!

Mindset of Love Understanding the fundamental mindsets of both the male and female perception of things will allow the very obvious distinctions to become evident. This is clearly depicted in the thought process that clearly defines the woman’s need for love while the man’s needs are primarily different as shown in the prioritized need for respect instead of the lesser valued element of love. When exploring the love basics element within the human society all parties must be able to relate to this very fundamental notion of difference. For most people having a relationship that is both respectful of each other’s feelings and the ability to freely express affection would be their prime concern and goal. However with the pressures of other elements it is often very hard to focus on creating the ideal relationship based on these two vital aspects. Sometimes making the quest a part of their lives, will give them the opportunity to find a meaningful element or platform, to make their live have some direction and purpose. Finding love would require some initial physical and mental contributions on the part of each individual as there would have to be various different elements that would have to seem to be working together in order to ensure the end results would be appealing to the party being wooed. Every living element functions better with the presence of love in the existing equation. However most people are so caught up with their own everyday agendas, they often forget the importance of demonstrating love towards each other, especially within the marriage perimeter. Almost every married couple will be able to relate to this particular lack within their marriage at one point or another. Therefore it would be very helpful if both parties understood the importance of being lovingly demonstrative within the marriage as this will often be the single most effective tool to keep the marriage from adversity and strife.

Intimacy problems widely occur behind a variety of closed doors. Conflicts may include a loss of harmony between the sheets, a lack of sexual desire between either partners or failure in communication. There are often psychological factors that may contribute to a sexual disorder such as erectile dysfunction, or a lowered desire after a new mother has given birth. Intimacy issues are common, but if one or more become severe and there is no resolution in sight, it may be time to seek therapy for guidance. No plates allowed. Snuggle up with your lover and watch a movie. Laying next to each with nothing on, under a blanket or comforter is fun. Don’t forget the popcorn. Give each other a back rub and or a foot rub. Wash your lover’s back and sensitive parts for them. Dry them and oil them... with your whole self. Read poetry to each other with an accent of some type Eat cake with your hands Play with each other with silly string Remember that every day is special and you are great together because you have each other. Remember that you two are special to each other; so give hugs like you mean it. Hold each other like there is nowhere else you need to be. Caress each other with your hands and with your eyes. Get some takeout and bring it home to enjoy it how you want to enjoy it. There are no rules that say you have to eat at the kitchen table. Whipped cream can be a topping on any body part ... it’s not just for strawberries even if you are in your 60’s or 70’s. Watch a comedy and laugh out loud. If you are single, try these things on yourself first. Then with a friend... or not, it’s all up to you ❤❤❤

WeaReHER We aRe HER will Develop Their Character, Equip Their Minds, Empower their Dreams and Mentor our Female Future LeadersDEEM!

We aRe HER was founded by Latasha Stephens-Cummings for young girls and women of all ages. The Leadership Academy was established in March of 2017, in response to the growing need for positive female role models, a haven for domestic survivors, and a support group for mothers who have lost children. There is a growing need for support for our minority young girls and women in the underserved communities to see every day that it’s possible for someone like her to thrive in school, life, and business, and to believe in her own possibilities. WeaReHER encourages girls, domestic abuse survivors, and mothers who need support to love themselves first. Our Leadership Academy helps build character and leadership skills that create thinkers that know how to engage in conflict resolution and peer mediation while building confidence and self-esteem. WeaReHER accomplishes this through its three core programs.

WeaReHER Vision We envision a world where all our young ladies feel uplifted, supported, and encouraged to accept that they are fearfully and wonderfully made; and whomever they aspire to be. They too can be HER. WeaReHER will Develop Their Character, Equip Their Minds, Empower their Dreams and Mentor our Female Future LeadersDEEM! Mission Our mission is to strengthen the leadership, power, and voices of women and girls from marginalized and underserved communities. One unique course we offer for our girls is; Queens In Training. It has a targeted effort that addresses the young ladies' mental and physical issues in a comprehensive and interactive way as well as social and emotional. Our economic literacy introduces the young ladies to basic economic, and financial concepts, including money management, investments, and global economics. WeaReHER has other branches of the organization that includes the following; Through It All Ministries is our outreach services that help ladies who are trying to leave or have left a Domestic Violence encounter, by providing immediate shelter, food, and clothing. Collaborating with other non-profits to assist in aiding the ladies and their children. Advocating, teaching, and speaking on Domestic Violence, to educate women on the early signs and how to protect themselves. Our Feminine Hygiene Drive provides toiletries and female essentials for low income and underserved communities. Our Angel Tree, which collects toys for ages 1-10 and phone accessories, socks, perfume, or electronic items for ages 11-17 for families in need. Pamper Me for a Day initiative provides facials, massages and manicures for ladies who have hit a rough patch and need a little tender Love and Care and an opportunity to relax. Why Me? an outreach for mothers Dealing and Coping with the loss of a child/children so many women silently deal with the grief of losing a child /children and many never seek counseling, and therefore the anger, denial, guilt, isolation and depression, slips in. We are a listening ear, a sounding board, and a place of healing. Programs focused on this group are Accepting the loss- First step in acknowledging they are no longer here Adapting Without – Dealing with the fact you must continue in life Honoring our Angels- Finding ways to cherish our beloved ones Mending- Coping with the pain of it all, and learning how to channel the emotional rollercoaster thoughts Our goal is to make a continued positive impact in our communities with the programs and services that we offer. As women, we have been or continue to be – HER! If you would like more information on how you can help in the cause to assist our Leadership Academy, our Through It All Ministries, and or our Why Me program through donations or Mentorship, please contact us at…www.weareherla.org
