New Orleans This January, 2017, The Mopar Masters Guild will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Our guild has accomplished so much over the years. We have based our en re pla orm on “The exchange of informa on by like-size dealers in a non-compe ve environment”. We ALL learn from each other constantly.

The Mopar Masters Guild was established in 1992 by Chuck Hartle, Bart Cooper and Cy Yates. The first annual Mopar Masters Guild mee ng was held in the Great City of New Orleans in conjunc on with the Na onal Auto Dealers Associa on (NADA) Conven on. This tradi on is s ll con nued today and gives parts managers a pla orm to tackle business challenges together as well as interact with Mopar. We have since welcomed some very intriguing Service Managers to our group who have enlightened us on many levels.

Since the first mee ng, the guild has been ac ve in the development of many factory programs. Not a day goes by that a FCA brand dealership does not use a program that the guild has played a role in.

We are the top 100 FCA dealers in the country as listed on Dealer Connect – Mopar Masters Tracking. This group has evolved into an established, collec ve voice with FCA as well as a proven sounding board helping vendors be er their product offering to the en re automo ve industry.

From our incep on, we have funded our mee ngs and interac ons with our vendors, our website and newsle er through suppor ng vendor membership dues.

Our mee ngs this year will be built around, both, structured and candid conversa ons amongst ourselves, presenta ons from our vendors (without whom none of this would be possible – we cannot thank them enough for all of their support) and, of course, a day with Mopar (we truly appreciate the fact that they take me out of their busy schedules to listen and interact with our guild). We will serve, both, breakfast and lunch at our mee ngs and have a welcome recep on for our members and their guests. On Friday evening, January 27th, our main recep on, the event of our history, will be with all of our members, their guests, our vendors and our friends from Mopar.

Meet Your Board J.D. Ipsen - MMG Treasurer Ken Garff - West Valley CDJR W. Valley City, Utah

I started in the car business delivering parts when I was a sophomore in High school mid-1991. At that me I worked for a Jeep Eagle Renault dealer.

I progressed through most dealership posi ons, Parts delivery, Warehouse, Parts sales, Service Advisor and New car sales.

I was then promoted to Parts Director of a large Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram SRT dealership. At my current posion, we are heavy in wholesale, usually 63% of our business is shipped or delivered out the back door. I have 23 members of my parts team and consider them “The family away from my family.”

Throughout most of my me spent in these posi ons, I learned them all without the aid of technology. From handwri en repair orders to checking in parts against a packing slip piece by piece and delivering parts to customers without the aid of GPS. I think learning each facet of the dealership this way has made me into the professional I am today. I hate to be nostalgic, but it seemed so much easier back then.

My thoughts about how I can bring something to the Mopar Masters Guild has me thinking about many aspects of the business. The hope is that the auto industry will con nue to evolve and grow and will be forever in our minds, but the ques on is, how can I help grow the Guild now while business is good? I guess my answer would be, through my con nuous support of the Guild, vendor rela onships and Guild representa on with FCA/Mopar officials. I want to be the older brother to newer Guild members, make them feel welcome and coach them through our process, bring my excitement and mix it with the vast knowledge of the senior Guild members to help make this the greatest me to be a part of the MMG. On a personal note, I have been happily married for over 21 years, we have two children, Devin (19) and Sydney (15) and we enjoy spending me as a family. We love the beach, standup paddle boarding, and boa ng.

Basically anywhere there is water is where you will find us. When it’s too cool for watersports, we head to the sand dunes for camping and ATV riding.

Distracted Driving Becoming More Prevalent Than Ever!

Gotta Crash ‘Em All, Pokémon!

Chances are, you have heard of the new Pokémon Go phenomenon that is sweeping the naƟon.

Pokémon Go is a game played on a smartphone that encourages people to walk around to collect 151 Pokémon and is based off the card game and hand-held Nintendo games of the 90’s.

While a seemingly harmless game of augmented reality, Pokémon Go is turning into anything but. Indeed, the app--one of the most popular smartphone games of all me--is causing numerous car crashes and injuring innocent vic ms throughout the state and country.

Here are a few mes the game has actually contributed to real world accidents: 

A man was driving while playing the game when he got distracted, drove off the road, and slammed into a tree. He was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.



A 15-year-old girl was hit by a car as she was walked onto a busy highway while paying a en on to her phone instead of oncoming traffic. The girl suffered an injured collarbone and foot as well some bruising.



A man stopped his car in the middle of the highway, causing a mul -car pile up, in an effort to catch Pikachu, one of the ny fic onal monsters.



Police body-camera records a man crashing into the back of a police car while playing the game. No officers were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. No one was injured.

These are just a few examples of the accidents caused by drivers distracted by Pokémon Go. If you or a loved one were injured by a driver or pedestrian who was playing the game, contact an experienced injury a orney to discuss your legal rights.

What is Pokémon Go? As noted above, Pokémon Go is an augmented reality game one can play on their smartphone. To quote pokemon.com, a er downloading the applica on: “Get on your feet and step outside to find and catch wild Pokémon. Explore ci es and towns around where you live and even around the globe to capture as many Pokémon as you can. As you move around, your smartphone will vibrate to let you know you’re near a Pokémon. Once you’ve encountered a Pokémon, take aim on your smartphone’s touch screen and throw a Poké Ball to catch it. Be careful when you try to catch it, or it might run away! Also look for PokéStops located at interes ng places, such as public art installa ons, historical markers, and monuments, where you can collect more Poké Balls and other items.”

Fiat Chrysler may sell Magneti Marelli parts unit to Samsung in $3B deal, report says Jungah Lee, Sohee Kim and Tommaso Ebhardt Bloomberg August 3, 2016 12:40 CET SEOUL/BERLIN -- Samsung Electronics is in advanced talks to buy some or all of the opera ons of parts maker Magne Marelli from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, according to people familiar with the ma er.

Samsung is par cularly interested in Magne Marelli’s ligh ng, in-car entertainment and telema cs business and could consider an acquisi on of the whole company, the people said, asking not to be iden fied as the discussions are private.

The deal could be worth more than $3 billion with a goal of closing this year, one of the people said, which would make it the company’s biggest-ever acquisi on outside South Korea.

Vice Chairman Lee Jae Yong, 48, is reshaping Samsung, South Korea’s biggest company, as he takes on more responsibili es once held by his father. He has sold off assets and narrowed the conglomerate’s scope as he seeks to bounce back from a downturn in the smartphone business. A move into automobile components would help decrease Samsung’s reliance on consumer electronics.

Lee, who has been a director of Fiat Chrysler’s controlling shareholder Exor since 2012, would also posi on his company to benefit from the rising interest in cars from technology companies.

Apple, Baidu and Google are pushing into automobiles, seeking to deploy their technology into new areas as cars become more advanced. Samsung Electronics had more than $70 billion of cash and marketable securi es as of March 31, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

In addi on to global leadership in smartphones, Samsung is the world’s biggest producer of memory chips and televisions.

Samsung declined to comment in an e-mail statement. A Fiat Chrysler spokesman had no comment.

Fiat Chrysler was the first major carmaker to strike a deal with Google on driverless vehicles and the company is in discussions with other technology companies, CEO Sergio Marchionne said on a conference call a er the company’s second-quarter earnings results last month.

A er calling off efforts to pursue a merger with General Motors Co., Marchionne has made elimina ng debt his highest priority before he leaves the post in 2019. Achieving the goal would put Fiat Chrysler in a be er posi on to find a partner. Marchionne contends that the auto industry wastes too much money and needs to consolidate to finance investment in new technology.

Continued from Page 7 In December, Samsung Electronics created a team to work on automobile components, in-car entertainment and autonomous driving. It has also been charged with coordina ng with other arms of the conglomerate making ba eries and providing so ware services.

Last month, Samsung’s Shanghai unit bought a 3 billion-yuan ($451 million) stake in China’s BYD to gain a slice of surging sales of electric cars.

New lighƟng ideas In 2009, Magne Marelli and Samsung teamed up to develop display products for entertainment, informa on and naviga on. Samsung, which is expanding global sales of its displays using organic LEDs and ligh ng soluons, could offer new light sources and bendable dashboards to design-sensi ve luxury car drivers.

Magne has years of experience in satellite naviga on, connec vity, infotainment and telema cs systems, which offer connec vity with external electronic devices. Telema c devices allow in-vehicle access to specific services, including insurance, car parks and an -the security.

An eventual sale of Magne Marelli would help Marchionne in what analysts see as the most challenging plan of his five-year strategy, which include more than doubling net income: turning Fiat Chrysler’s 5 billion euros in net industrial debt into a cash pile of at least 4 billion euros. That compares with an average es mate of 3.81 billion euros of debt at the end of 2018 by 12 analysts.

Marchionne said in April that there will be a point in me when Fiat will consider a disposal of Magne Marelli.

“We will be in a posi on to take a hard look at this to find out whether it makes sense to con nue Marelli in the por olio,” Marchionne told analysts April 26. “But we’re far removed from that today.”

Fiat’s components business, which includes Magne Marelli, Comau and Teksid, made 111 million euros of adjusted earning before interest and taxes on 2.43 billion euros of revenue in the second quarter pushed by “higher volumes” at Magne Marelli, Fiat said July 27.

Acquiring scale Acquiring the business would immediately give scale to Samsung’s automo ve ambi ons through established brands, plants and distribu on. A deal could open up access for Samsung to supply some of Fiat’s luxury brands, which include Masera . Fiat spun off its Ferrari business last year.

Such a deal would also be the biggest move into automobiles by the South Korean conglomerate since Samsung Motors went bankrupt ahead of eventual sale to Renault in 2000.

Mike Anderson: Industry Needs to Find ‘Path of Resolution’ to Vehicle Scanning ANAHEIM, Calif., Aug. 12, 2016—Mike Anderson, FenderBende rcolumnist and president/owner of Collision Advice, offered a call to ac on to insurers, OEMs, collision shops and informa on providers while modera ng a panel regarding the need for pre- and post-repair scans and calibra on.

The panel took place on Thursday at the 2016 NACE/CARS Conference & Expo at the Anaheim Conven on Center in Anaheim, Calif., and came on the heels of recent announcements from four OEMs requiring pre- and post-repair scans.

Panelists included Chris Toby, American Honda Motor Company; Eric Mendoza, Toyota Motor Sales, USA; Brian Wayne, FCA; John Eck, General Motors; Mark Allen, Audi of America; Mark Zoba, Nissan North America; Doug Kelly, CEO, Collision Diagnos c Services; Chris Evans, State Farm; and Gerry Poirier, Farmers Insurance.

All OEM representa ves agreed that scanning is a quality issue for everyone involved and that the only way to iden fy damage, beyond a shadow of a doubt, is with a pre-repair scan. While General Motors has not released a posi on statement, Eck said that a statement is forthcoming and will likely read similar to Honda’s.

While none of the OEMs said they have parameters when it comes to the year and models of vehicles that should be scanned, many noted that if parameters were of concern to repairers and insurers, they could easily be put in place.

All OEM representa ves also said they have labor mes they use for these opera ons, but need informa on providers to get engaged and set labor mes.

Toby said that one of the most important steps is recalibra ng the Occupant Classifica on System (OCS) and referenced Honda’s recent video demonstra ng the impact of an airbag deploying only 1/100th of a second too late.

All OEMs require various specific OEM targets to be used during recalibra ons to achieve 0-point calibra on.

Honda, for example, sells targets for $2,800, Audi’s are available for rent at the dealer and Toyota’s comes with the repair manual.

Anderson then noted that, according to his observa ons working with shops as a consultant, the vast majority of shops aren’t charging for 0-point calibra on and asked repairers to stop using insurers as an excuse for ignorance.

While discussing charging for these opera ons, Anderson asked all panelists what a shop should do if an insurer will not pay for the opera on, yet the repairer believes it is impera ve to the repair. All panelists agreed that the shop owner should s ll perform the scan, no ng that the liability of not doing it is too great. During a later Q&A por on, several shop owners took issue with this and noted the difficult posi on of many collision repairers. This is a subject FenderBender columnist Darrell Amberson recently tackled in his column “Overcoming Insurance Objec ons on Vehicle Scans.”

All the OEMs represented did provide freeze frame data, although it was noted that European car makers typically provide the most amount of informa on and detail.

The OE representa ves also argued that a ermarket scan tools do not perform at the same level as OE scan tools and said they could only guarantee their OE so ware’s performance. Although Kelly said there are a number of good a ermarket scan tools available, those tools frequently have to play catch-up when it comes to updates and they don’t have access to build data.

Meanwhile, the two insurer representa ves said their respec ve insurance companies have not landed on a posi on due to the many considera ons regarding pre- and post-repair scans. They both indicated interest in greater specificity surrounding the OEM posi on statements.

Finally, Anderson closed out the panel by asking industry cons tuents to take ac on toward resolving the fricon in a number of ways: 

TOO MUCH BUSINESS CAN BE BAD FOR BUSINESS! The past few months almost every parts & service manager I’ve talked to brags about how great their business is. A few even told me (get this), ‘they just don’t have me to make any more money’ - I swear they actually said that - I sure hope their dealer doesn’t hear them say that! But hey, business is good right now, and that is great, but guys- don’t get too big for your britches! Too much business can be bad for business! No ma er how busy you are today, remember you s ll need every customer you can get - and you need them to return for their next service if you want to grow and take your store to the next level.

Here’s 3 things to consider while business is good- I’m just sayin’

1. Be More Convenient! You need to make sure the ones you have in your store now aren’t just onehit wonders, you need to give them great service - you need to be faster, nicer, be er and more convenient. In other words, you need to stop pissing them off!

Extend the hours you are open, staff up, take appointments later in the day, answer your phones better, deliver parts to your techs to keep them in their bays working and stop making customers stand in line to pay their bill- it pisses them off! Fire your cashier and get your advisors to do the cashiering- it’s the best thing you’ll ever do (check out the recorded webinar called “Fire Your Cashier” on my blog at CarPeopleMarkeƟng.com

2. Don›t Stop AdverƟsing. Just because you are busy now- doesn’t mean you always will be. If you don’t stay in touch, some of your previous customers will go somewhere else and they might find somebody they like be er - and they just might never return. Service today is like a long distance rela onship- cars only need service about every 6 months - so it’s harder to build a las ng bond - and if they go somewhere else today for an oil change, they are out of the market for another 6 months - and you lost!

3. Give Customers a Reason to Return. Do an ac

ve delivery, say thank you and mean it, wash ev-

ery car, be different and reward your loyal customers to keep them coming back. Almost every business today has some kind of a rewards or loyalty club- they make sense, customers love them and it’s been proven that club members visit more, spend more and defect less.

Guys, you have to take care of your customers today while you’re busy or this could be the last time you see them- it ain’t pre y, it just is what it is!

Risks in Auto Repairs With Aftermarket Parts Wri en by Adam Graves, The Legal Examiner The automoƟve aŌermarket is big business-–esƟmated by Autocare AssociaƟon to be worth $273.4 billion in 2017-–that includes manufacturing, remanufacturing, distribuƟon, retailing, and installaƟon of all vehicle parts, tools, equipment and accessories for vehicles, aŌer the sale of the automobile by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to the consumer.

One aspect of the automo ve a ermarket is non-OEM replacement parts. These are commonly available through auto parts stores like Advance, O’Reilly, NAPA, and also through used-parts dealers (“junkyards”), and auto body repair shops. The primary “advantage” of a ermarket parts is price – they are substan ally less expensive than their OEM counterparts. However, one must consider the real cost of choosing cheap replacement parts.

Insurance Companies Cuƫng Corners?

Just last year, CNN reported that auto insurers were trying to take advantage of cheap prices by forcing repair shops to use a ermarket parts when repairing crash damage. Repair shops from some 36 states are joining a lawsuit against these insurance companies alleging the repairs forced by some insurance companies are dangerous.

Continued from Page 37 Buddy Caldwell, a orney general of Louisiana, has filed suit against State Farm insurance, saying its low-cost repair program could be dangerous for customers who get back on the road in vehicles that are not roadworthy.

He said he fears thousands of Americans could be driving around in vehicles repaired with what he calls junkyard parts a er seeking repairs from body shops recommended by their auto insurance companies who took their premiums and picked up the bill.

The issue is a na onwide one, said John Eaves, the lead a orney for the body shops involved in the lawsuit.

“It involves people from Maine to Mississippi to California. Every state in the Union has experienced the same sort of struggle here between the body shops trying to do the work the right way, and the insurance companies trying to cut corners and force them to use unsafe parts and unsafe methods on their cars,” he said.

OEMs Do Not Approve Ford Motor Company issued a 2010 press release regarding non-OEM parts which included the results of tests performed by Ford’s Material Composi on and Computer Aided Engineering department comparing OEM bumper beams, bumper isolators, bumper brackets, and radiator supports to their a ermarket equivalents.

These Ford tests found major differences between genuine Ford original equipment replacement parts and aftermarket copies. Ford found that non-OEM parts performed differently in crash tests because the a ermarket parts were not of like kind and quality as Ford’s original equipment and cer fied replacement parts.

Paul Massie, the powertrain and collision product marke ng manager at Ford, said the tests “highlight the dangers of being penny-wise and pound-foolish, as less-expensive copy parts could lead to much higher repair costs down the road. All drivers should be aware that copy parts can compromise both the safety performance and the long-term repair costs of your vehicle”.

Counterfeit Parts on the Rise To make ma ers even worse, consumers now have to worry about counterfeit or knock-off parts making their way into the stream of commerce. These parts are o en sold in branded packaging and carry brand markings, but are in fact cheaply made and poten ally dangerous fakes. In June, Chinese police seized 33,000 counterfeit parts--worth almost US $750,000--des ned for sale in Australia.

“While this seizure is shocking, sadly, it’s not uncommon, and using counterfeit parts, knowingly or otherwise, means you’re taking a huge risk,” he said in a statement.

It offers a clear reminder to consumers that just because they see a branded box, bag or label they shouldn’t assume they’re buying a genuine part. The way to avoid safety concerns posed by fake parts is to ensure you or your repairer sources genuine replacement parts from the vehicle maker’s authorized supply chain.

Nevada Bulletin Reminds Industry on Non-OEM Parts Disclosure, Manufacturer Procedures The Nevada Division of Insurance issued a bulle n in July reminding auto insurance companies and collision repair facility operators about their obliga ons to disclose non-OEM parts usage to consumers and follow manufacturer procedures.

On July 22, the Nevada Department of Business and Industry, Division of Insurance, issued a bulle n detailing the standards the auto insurance and collision repair industries must adhere to when non-OEM parts are used during an insurance claim. The bulle n also explains that repairs must follow specifica ons from vehicle manufacturers. An insurer that failed to authorize repairs “…in accordance with manufacture specifica ons and/or repair-industry standards…” would be considered engaging in unfair claims se lement prac ces.

Nevada Division of Insurance Bulle n 16-005, Use of AŌer-Market Parts in Vehicle Repair, provides that non-OEM parts can be used during collision repairs as long as regula ons concerning disclosure are followed by auto insurers and collision repair facili es. “This bulle n serves as a reminder to insurers of the standards that must be adhered to for motor vehicle liability and physical damage claims involving the repair of a vehicle, specifically the use of parts not manufactured for or by the original manufacturer of the vehicle being repaired (non-OEM parts),” According to the bulle n: NRS 686A.31 0(1 )(e) requires the insurer to effectuate prompt, fair, and equitable se lements of claims when the liability of the insurer is reasonably clear. This can be accomplished using non-OEM parts, but only if the repairs adhere to the following standards: 

The vehicle must be restored to its pre-loss condi on. The non-OEM parts must be warranted to be of like kind and quality.



Pursuant to NAC 686A.240, the insurer must disclose that the repair es mate is based on the use of non-OEM parts. The disclosure must be a ached to the repair es mate, be printed in not less than 10-point type, and include the following statement:

THIS ESTIMATE IS BASED ON THE USE OF BODY PARTS FOR YOUR MOTOR VEHICLE WHICH WERE NOT MANUFACTURED FOR OR BY THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE. ANY WARRANTIES PROVIDED FOR THESE BODY PARTS ARE PROVIDED BY THE MANUFACTURER OR DISTRIBUTOR OF THESE PARTS, NOT BY THE MANUFACTURER OF YOUR MOTOR VEHICLE. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR INSURER TO DETERMINE YOUR RIGHTS REGARDING THE USE OF SUCH BODY PARTS. 

Pursuant to NAC 487.170, the body shop must provide a wri en statement to the claimant iden fying each nonOEM part and its origin, inform the claimant in wri ng that any warran es applicable to the non-OEM part are provided by the manufacturer of the part and not the manufacturer of the vehicle, and obtain the wri en consent of the claimant to use the non-OEM part.



Pursuant to NRS 487.688, the body shop or garage must perform the repair in accordance with any specifica ons of the manufacturer.



Finally, pursuant to NRS 487.520(2), any safety equipment must be repaired or replaced to the standards published and commonly applied in the motor vehicle repair industry.

The bulle n concludes, “If an insurer does not provide the required disclosures or refuses to authorize repairs in accordance with manufacture specifica ons and/or repair-industry standards, the insurer is engaging in unfair claims-se lement prac ces as defined in NRS 686A.310.”
