Letter from MMG President It was ten years ago this November that I was given my first opportunity to manage a parts department. During those ten years I have looked back many mes asking myself what factors have contributed to the successes of my employees and dealership. Timing, great employees, outside business factors, hard work, these were just a few of the answers to my ques on. With that there were two factors that pulled all the various elements together. The first being my willingness to keep an open mind, learning from others as well as my mistakes and successes. The second is my rela onship with the Mopar Masters Guild and the rela onships I have built through the group.

It was eight years ago that I a ended my first Guild mee ng. I entered the meeting looking up to nearly everyone around the table. Eyes open wide amazed at the successes of others. I was met with an openness that I had not yet experienced in business. The Guild mo o “The exchange of informa on by like-size dealers in a non-compe ve environment� was clearly present. I quickly realized that help was all around me. Members were there to help with the challenges I was facing. Oddly enough even with my inexperience as a manager I was also able to help others. The environment was phenomenal, energe c and caring.

Over those eight years I have con nued to a end mee ngs and developed business rela onships with other dealers and vendors. I have also par cipated on many vendor commi ees and given input on the development of products that I would later use at the dealership. Those rela onships have most defiantly moved my store through everyday business challenges. I have never been alone and always had another manager to reach out to prior to making cri cal business decisions. Over those years the mee ng format has also shi ed from those early years as the Guild has tried to cope with various challenges.

I am so proud now to be able to tell you that we have listened to Guild members and have looked back at the Guild roots and will make changes to this years mee ng format. Adjustments will give members more me to reach out to others.

We will have an open format, which will be er allow us to fulfill our mo o. Mopar managers have also again commi ed to a ending our mee ngs and we will have a condensed vendor fair. Building on our ever important vendor rela onships we have added small group mee ngs with vendors at the NADA conven on which give Guild members incredible access to companies that are important to our success.

Whether you have never a ended a Guild mee ng, are a veteran, or if you have a ended our annual mee ngs in the past and we have not seen you in a few years, I encourage you to a end this year. Make a commitment like I did as a young manager to seek help with business challenges. Know that the answers to your business ques ons can be found in the rela onships you will develop with other Guild members. Your commitment will be met by some of the most helpful, passionate and successful Mopar managers in the country. Managers, that I call my friends and brothers.

NADA 2014 Topic for Discussion – Relationship Marketing vs. Price Marketing As we finalize plans for NADA 2014 the first thing you’re going to no ce is this will not be the same as mee ngs we’ve had in the past. The officers and execu ve commi ee have been working hard behind the scenes to revamp our format to be er u lize our me together.

We came to the realiza on that we’ve been stuck in a rut and that the benefit for each of your dealerships had been diminished with our past format. While we always accomplished many things and good informa on was exchanged, we feel that it could be improved.

Our plea is that if you’ve been in the past and have become disheartened and quit coming, or you are contempla ng not a ending, give us another chance.

One por on of the mee ng this year will be a serious discussion for the group regarding the future of our business model in regards to how we go to market, i.e. Rela onship vs. Price or a combina on. This discussion will be planned with managers on both sides of this issue working on presenta ons and will be done in an organized and professional manner. Our plan is to debate this cri cal issue with regard to wholesale and retail service drive business. We plan to have experts from both sides of the issue make short presenta ons and then our moderator will ask leading ques ons of our panel and direct the discussion to keep it on me and on task. Ques ons and discussions will follow. If you would like to volunteer to be part of this panel and if you are willing to spend me before our mee ngs to pull together facts, data, and relevant informa on, then we encourage you to contact one of our officers or execu ve commi ee members. For our guild to remain strong it requires par cipa on. Remember our mo o: “The exchange of informa on by like-size dealers in a noncompe ve environment.” We all should give and take informa on for it to be an exchange!

Whichever marke ng plan you’re pursuing, I truly believe this is a discussion you can’t afford to miss. I look forward to leaving New Orleans with informa on that will help us meet many industry challenges facing us.

Mopar Masters Guild Meets with Dealer Tire The Dealer Tire commi ee held our annual vendor mee ng Thursday and Friday October 17th and 18th.

Represen ng the guild were Paul Allred, Susan McDaniel, Gerry Oakes and Marvin Windham. A ending from Dealer Tire was John Bellissimo Director of Sales and Steve Howder Director, Dealer Rela ons John reviewed the sta s cal data showing significant growth in the Chrysler segment of their business.

Even with the success of our re program, everyone in a endance agreed that we are s ll just scratching the surface of the poten al.

Unveiled were Dealer Tire’s adjustments in marke ng strategy. Their plan includes the con nued support of all Chrysler group dealers. However you will see more focus on the Dealer’s that have the commitment to their growth in the future. I can a est to this by having my account representa ve and a training specialist coming in our store for 3 days in December to work one on one with our staff. I encourage all dealers to take advantage of this focus!

Steve showed a video clip of commercial promo ng their web based portal “Righ urn” to drive re business to the dealership. This marke ng tool was introduced to the commi ee last year in Cleveland where they were tes ng in the Dallas market. Since then they have rolled it out in the Cleveland market where the success is encouraging and they will be adding addi onal markets in the future. We discussed the restructuring and improving the interface between Dealer Tire and the Mopar Masters Guild. They will be a ending the Guild’s vendor fair at NADA in New Orleans in January. New for 2014 are plans for the guild to par cipate in a quarterly interface delivered via a web portal to be determined. Stay tuned for the details.

MMG and REYNOLDS & REYNOLDS VENDOR COMMITTEE MEETING On Wednesday October, 28 2013 MMG Members: Rick Cutaia (Rick Hendrick Automo ve Group- Charleston, S.C.), Darrel Langford (Rick Hendrick Chrysler Jeep Fiat-Faye eville, N.C.), Rich Scho (Moore Chrysler Jeep Phoenix, A.Z.), Susan McDaniel (Bill Luke Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Ram-Phoenix, A.Z.) Controller Donna Kiley (Bill Luke Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Ram) met with Reynolds & Reynolds Jason SiderisProduct Planning Director Fixed Opera ons and Tim WilsonProduct Planning Manager Fixed Opera ons.

Our mee ng took place at Bill Luke Chrysler Jeep Dodge and Ram in Phoenix, Arizona. Don Luke kicked off the mee ng by taking everyone on a tour of the dealership and telling many stories along the way. He was very glad to have everyone there.

Our main topic, of course, was Integralink. Reynolds explained to us the security and legal issues that have taken place regarding non-public personal informa on. NPPI is any personal informa on that a dealer collects about an individual in connec on with providing a financial product or service that is not otherwise “publicly available.” Reynolds has stated that dealers can consider implemen ng a strict data “push” system for sharing data. This means you would only share data with third par es by gathering it, and sending it to them, rather than allowing them to “take” it by accessing your systems. This system allows you to have control over what data is shared, prevents concerns regarding access to data, and provides an audit trail of sharing.

Tim gave us an outstanding presenta on on ERA-IGNITE. This system is basically ERA, as we know it, on steroids! We will be able to build our own dashboard (Our personal favorites at a glance). We do this in lieu of opening sessions. So if there are 10 different screens we look at on a regular basis throughout the day they will always be on our dashboard to view without changing screens. We will have the ability to dial in our reports to show exactly what we need since they are in an excel format. The system is user friendly and has many convenient features. There will no longer be a need to transfer from one executable to another. We concluded our mee ng at Macayo’s for some real live Arizona Mexican food!

Thursday, we went on a Team Building Mission to Canyon Creek Ranch in Black Canyon City. We rode horses through the desert, shot at each other and a few skeet, saw some frozen ra le snakes in the saloon, had hamburgers, and rode in Unimog.

Thursday evening, we concluded our me together at Alice Cooper’s Cooperstown restaurant in downtown Phoenix.

We had some great conversa on regarding R&R and great fun! Thanks to Reynolds & Reynolds for all of your support to our Guild over the years and thank you Jason and Tim for being part of our team building.

MMG Meets With Tracy Industries Destination Seattle

This year’s annual fall mee ng with Tracy Industries was held at the iconic Edgewater located in Sea le Washington. Tracy Industries is Mopar’s official Sales, Marke ng and Distribu on team for Reman Powertrain products—Mopar’s Power Service Centers. Tracy’s President and Chief Execu ve Officer Tim Engvall & Na onal Sales Director Dave Carroll a end this years mee ng. The MMG was represented by Mike Mulkins-AutoNa on CJW, Josh Gouldsmith-Gladstone Dodge, and Brent Hoge-Larry Miller CJDR & Mike Gerber-Rairdon CJD.

We opened this years mee ng with several discussion points, which included a review of the Tracy Team, enhancements to current dealership training, exis ng promo ons and incen ves. Ideas and dealer feedback were solicited on increasing wholesale opportuni es, as well as a discussion on increasing retail powertrain sales. Tracy Industries con nues to expand its sales team, with a targeted 4th quarter growth to include 9 addi onal sales representa ves, and two addi onal BC managers. The wholesale program will feature a partner dealer ini a ve that will pair four dealers with an area Tracy representa ve. The outline targets partner visits weekly with the targeted partner dealer. Target daily visits will be for 15 IRF visits, a three ered training that would include addi onal training for dealer outside sales representa ves, service advisors, in addi on to all wholesale parts advisor training. Measurements will be in a form of monthly reviews of all partner dealers and will be held with both the dealer and business center. Training will be headed by Bill Taylor, who has been promoted as Tracy’s Na onal Sales Trainer. Bill has responsibility for complete dealer powertrain development and program installa on.

Mopar Masters Guild visits Snap-On Business Solutions On a great fall day in Cleveland Mopar Masters Guld committee members Marvin Windham, Bre Hoge, Paul Allred and Dan Hu on met with David Foutz, John Johnson and Keith Pople from Snap-OnBusiness Solu ons for a late regular season game between Cleveland Indians and the Houston Astros. The Cleveland Indians won the game 9-2 on their way to a wildcard playoff game against the Tampa Bay Rays only to fall short of making the division series.

Following the game we had dinner together and watched football and made plans to meet early Monday morning for our mee ng with SBS at their Richfield, O.H. headquarters.

Cory Roberts (Vice President of Global Parts and Service) opened the mee ng by introducing a new Business Partner, Insignia Group, led by David Stringer President and Mike Pierce Director of Business Development. Insignia Group is the leading provider of accessories sale systems and process training helping dealers maximize profits since 2001. Insignia currently supports 22 Brands and serves dealerships na onwide.

Snap-On Business Solu on (SBS) will no longer support the Easy Electronic Accessories system. Instead SBS has partnered with Insignia Group to offer their accessory selling system to their customers. Their products offers several enhancements that you and other Easy customers have requested.

Our other key topics that were discussed were….  New Insignia Catalog: some of the new features we talked about were system order tracking deals (workflow), being able to add a link on Website for our customers, Departmental Profit repor ng, expor ng the data from Easy and Vehicle Accessory Configurators.  Tools & Equipment program: for service tools to be rented for Technicians and expand it to all makes tool program  EPC/Cornerstone catalog technology pla orm that supports wholesale and consumers and E-Soluons, PAIS release ming, Fiat coming, IE10 updates, Windows 8 and price field expansion  Wave Portable Tablet Solu ons: EPC for Technicians In closing I would like to say Snap-On Business Solu ons is a top-notch company, and they have greatly impacted Dealerships all across the world to sell parts faster, and with more accuracy and always been very dependable.

MMG Executive Committee meets with OEConnection We started out our visit on Monday night with Dinner @ Beau’s Grille Restaurant with some of our special friends at OEConnec on.

The next day Paul Allred, Brent Hoge, Marvin Windham and I visited OE Connec on in Richfield, Ohio. Our MMG members were greeted on Tuesday morning by Paul Johnson Senior Vice President of OEConnec on and Ike Herman Director, Business Team Leader Supply Chain Solu ons.

Paul started out the mee ngs by giving us a brief history and overview of what’s been the focus at OEConnec on for the last year.

Several Topics were discussed by the some of the key people for OEC that day. Here are some of those major topics:  Repair Link: marke ng focus on leveraging Mitchell 1 and more dealer promo ons. New buyer’s applica on, and new Dealer enhancement. They are also looking at adding “all makes” support for Magne Marelli. Some other enhancements are DMS Integra on, Matrix pricing and source pricing.  Collision Link: is working paper es mate workflow, new web base applica on, improving importer es mate quote to order workflow.  Part Broker Direct: Chrysler parts for August 2013 Best Month, working on be er expor ng and printing, Import purchase list feature, daily inventory updates, discuss an op on for buyers to pay part of the freight charges and increased speed are some enhancements coming for 2014  Consumer link: is a new online parts store right on your website. They have added some new enhancements such as new online marke ng such as Postcards, Flyers and Social Media. Other changes are new reports in Consumer Link used to send special promo ons to en ce repeat business.  EasyParts.com: gives you search engine visibility to every part on your shelf, allowing you to compete with the a ermarket online. Can integrate with a Consumer link storefront or work as a stand-alone solu on.  MarketplaceDirect: makes it easy to list parts on eBay Motors. This will be a huge me savings from trying to list parts on eBay Motors yourself.

Mopar Masters visit Elite Extra Eau Claire, WI September 2013, the much an cipated visit with Elite Extra team and MMG vendor commi ee. We arrived Thursday the 26th to beau ful 74 degree weather. Our travels to Eau Claire from Minneapolis consisted of a two hour drive through “The country.” As far as could be seen from the freeway, were farms, farm houses, livestock and an occasional gas sta on or small shopping center.

This me of year in Wisconsin produces a gorgeous array of fall colors.

The team of MMG commi ee members consisted of Rick Monteiro (commi ee chair), Joe McBeth (member), myself and the President of the Mopar Masters Guild Steve Hofer. We gathered at the hotel, located just down the street from the ADC corporate headquarters, for a welcome recep on that was put together by Elite Extra’s business development manager Ross Kleiner. Drinks, food and a great group of employees from Elite Extra joined us at the recep on.

As the a ernoon quickly faded into evening, we sat elbow to elbow with many of these employees. The office manager, technical support staff, ADC president Jim Ward and his brother John and even Jim’s wife (Michelle) and father (Dave) were in a endance.

Our annual mee ng started early Friday morning at Elite Extra’s headquarters. We were greeted by the Elite Extra team, Ross, Rachel and John Ward. Elite Extra office manager provided us with a choice of breakfast foods and juices. As the rest of the Elite Extra and ADC team made their way to the conference room, we discussed and reminisced about the welcome recep on that took place the evening before.

The mee ng started as Ross Kleiner welcomed everyone and made some introduc ons. Ross also went over the agenda and the schedule for the weekend’s events. Ross began the mee ng with a 2013 recap of successes and challenges, the success of the Route Whiteboard and the new Geofencing op on. We con nued the mee ng discussing the new Extra CRM tool that was piloted at Park CJD. Steve Hofer gave his comments and success stories from pilo ng this new CRM feature.

As we broke for lunch we enjoyed sandwiches, pickles and chips. We watched YouTube videos from the Jimmy Fallon show in which he and Jus n Timberlake have a conversa on using “Hashtag” in front of every sentence they say. Super funny, but led the MMG members and Elite Extra team in a weekend full of Hashtags!!!

A er lunch we con nued the agenda, Lori Liddell gave us a tour of the new repor ng tool. Ross took us through the service shu le pilot and how it has been integrated into the tracking/dispatching tool. The team went through manifest signature capture, ADP integra on refinements and Elite Extras accommoda ng processes other DMS systems.

Continued from Page 14 We finished the day with plans for the future, sugges ons from the Guild, more Mopar users and new ideas for the partnership between the MMG and Elite Extra. The gathering of Mopar Masters and the Elite Extra team produced a very casual, informa ve and collabora ve business mee ng that sa sfied both par es in ways that can’t be told or relayed easily. This business rela onship we have as Extra users is invaluable and is something that we cannot live without in the wholesale business.

At the end of the day, the team of Mopar Masters and a select group of ADC/Elite Extra members took an hour drive from Eau Claire, WI to Lake Holcombe, WI where we would set up camp for the weekend. Just like the drive from the Minneapolis airport to Eau Claire, this drive was ever so beau ful. The cabin where we would call home for the weekend was awesome!!! Elite Extra’s marke ng manager Jamie Hagen set up the cabin with enough food for 100 people. Jamie thought of everything, beer, snacks and yes even the Wisconsin cheese curds.

Saturday morning Joe and I met Ross and his father at lower long lake for some early morning small mouth Bass slaying. Since Ross and his father are tournament fisherman, this fishing trip was amazing. We were hooking them within five minutes of hi ng the lake. Be er than the fishing, was the conversa ons and friendship building that took place. Business rela onships are one thing, but to truly get to know someone on a fishing boat should be the key to begin business to business rela onships.

We returned to the cabin for Bratwurst, chips and cookies prepared by Jim Ward. The rest of the day and evening, we were entertained with music, college football and card games with the Elite Extra crew. ADC and Elite Extra employ so many great people, that you almost have to remind yourself that this was a business trip!

As a member of the Mopar Masters Guild and an Elite Extra user, I am proud to call these business associates “friends”.

Welcomed MMG

The Elite EXTRA Team would like to thank Rick Monteiro, Steve Hofer, Joe McBeth, and J.D. Ipsen on another very successful Annual Committee Meeting in Wisconsin. We’ve received numerous ideas and insight on continuing to be the best parts-delivery routing and tracking solution available. or Keep Your Parts Inventory Accurate It’s the season where parts departments begin the grueling task of performing their physical inventory. But have you considered how you can continue to keep your parts inventory accurate throughout the year? Here are a few tips that can help: CONDUCT PERPETUAL INVENTORIES

MONITOR PARTS IN YOUR SPECIAL ORDER BINS

Perpetual inventories give you a much better chance to identify discrepancies, enabling you to correct them as you find them and minimize variances during the next physical inventory. During idle time in the parts department, assign each counterperson a few bins to count weekly and update the inaccuracies immediately. Consider utilizing Reynolds Parts Barcoding Scanners to speed up the process and increase accuracy.

CLEAR DIRTY CORE INVENTORY

Identify special-ordered parts that have not been picked up within 15 days of being received and re-notify the customer or service advisor. If the parts still aren’t picked up within 30 days, return them to the OEM, place them in stock, or get rid of them. This will keep your special order bins free of unnecessary parts and minimize obsolescense.

Maintaining an accurate record of customer-returned cores and promptly returning them to the supplier is important because it assures the inventory value is up-to-date for both Parts and Accounting. Plus, physically removing them allows you to make better use of vital space in your department.

Follow these guidelines consistently throughout the year to keep your inventory accurate and your next annual physical inventory audit less stressful.

Rhode Island’s Don Cushing Wears Multiple Hats in Parts Wholesale and Auto Body Associations Worldwide, collision repair is a complex industry with many factors weighing heavily on its prac ce and progress, and the environment in New England is no different. There are constant legal ba les, training issues and new technology to contend with, making it difficult for many people to keep up with and stay ahead of all these changes. The easiest way for many to keep up with current trends and informa on is suppor ng industry associa ons with your involvement on a local and na onal level.

Don Cushing of Rhode Island is the Wholesale Manager at Bald Hill Dodge Chrysler and Jeep. With nearly 40 years of experience in and around the collision repair industry, Cushing is a valuable resource for informa on and trends locally and na onwide. Cushing exemplifies this involvement with several important associa ons: the Mopar Masters Guild (MMG), the Auto Body Associa on of Connec cut (ABAC), and the Alliance of Automo ve Service Providers of Massachuse s (AASP/MA). “I take my career with Bald Hill DCJ and my involvement with the Mopar Masters Guild, ABAC News and AASP/MA very seriously, and I’m determined to make a difference! I use all of these avenues to network with customers and build rela onships because without our customers we are nothing.”

A er gradua ng ITT Technical Ins tute in 1974, Cushing began his career as a parts counterperson at a small dealership in Providence RI, and a er a few months, he was recruited by a large dealership, under the direc on of Ernie Wennerstrom, his current Parts Director at Bald Hill. A er a few years working for various smaller dealerships during which he “yearned to get back to the wholesale side of the business,” Cushing was hired as the Wholesale Representa ve at a Chrysler dealership where he was employed for 16 years.

A change came in 1997 when Wennerstrom hired Cushing as Bald Hill’s Wholesale Manager and made him responsible for supplying over 1100 customers for their mechanical and collision departments. Cushing notes, “I have several parts representa ves that work alongside me in my endeavours to gain customer base and formulate new and exci ng ideas to increase the company revenue.”

Cushing became involved with MMG in 1998 when Wennerstrom introduced him to the Execu ve Board who were interested in having Cushing create their newsle er. Cushing’s contribu ons yielded success. He says, “What started out as a simple updated pamphlet to members has now turned into a mul -page magazine featuring members’ stories, vendor profiles, vendor ads and industry news! The plus side of working for the Mopar Masters Guild is that I get to listen and hear what the ‘Best of the Best’ have to offer at guild events.” The same year, Cushing began expanding Bald Hill’s customer territory into CT, and as Bald Hill acquired more customers in their neighbouring state, Cushing met many collision repair shop owners who belonged to ABAC. Over me, he told them about his success with MMG’s newsle er, and in 2001, he helped them launch ABAC News, the official newsle er for ABAC. The newsle er, combined with the financial support of its adver sers, allowed ABAC to con nue growing their educa onal and legisla ve programs.

Through his roles with Bald Hill, MMG and ABAC, Cushing also became involved with AASP-MA, and in November 2012, he was appointed as their Statewide Associa on Division Director. His du es are to serve the Board of Directors by using

Continued from Page 30 his experience as a vendor to contribute input on the many concerns and issues facing the industry.

Currently, ABAC’s most important topic is the Har ord Lawsuit. In regards to this endeavour, Cushing notes, “This class ac on lawsuit will certainly be a game changer in the way that insurance companies conduct themselves in the future, both on the local (Connec cut) level, northeast and na onwide. Increasing membership, the educa on of ABAC members and shop owners and legisla on are some of the ongoing issues that the ABAC is focusing on. These endeavours will prove extremely valuable as they move forward.” He also explains that a few of the ways that ABAC works toward achieving their goals is through seminars, OEM presenta ons, guest speakers at events and adver sing.

Another important concern in CT right now is their An -Steering Bill, and Cushing has “always supported the fact that everyone has a right to choose the repairer of their choice. There should be no influence from the insurance company on where a customer brings their vehicle.”

One of MMG’s biggest events is their annual mee ng at NADA, and their next mee ng is scheduled for January 2014 in New Orleans, LA. According to Cushing, “This annual mee ng draws the best Mopar parts managers (and the top 100) in the country. The mo o for the MMG is ‘the exchange of informa on by like-size dealers in a non-compe

ve environ-

ment.’ This mee ng combined with several Performance Group mee ngs throughout the year keeps members apprised of new and innova ve ideas that are brought forth from these gatherings.”

Recently, Cushing was elected as President of the Southern New England Mopar Service and Parts Master’s Guild. The group meets once a month, and their variety of guest speakers tends to draw a decent crowd. Cushing hopes that this role will also allow him to aid with necessary industry improvements; “I plan on using this posi on to help to further educate a endees in their daily opera ons and hopefully share some ideas and best prac ces (as we do with the Mopar Masters Guild) with each other.”

In regards to issues impac ng the collision repair industry as a whole, Cushing notes, “As we move forward in the automo ve industry, there are challenges that we all face. The Right to Repair Act is one. Working for a dealership and with our large customer base, we have always shared and assisted with informa on that our customers (collision and mechanical shops) need. I don’t believe that we should just sell parts to our accounts and not help them when they are in need. This is also one of the main reasons why I don’t support the Parts Act. We as a dealer of OEM parts have the resources to give our wholesale customers informa on on repairing their vehicles in the best and safest way possible according to our manufacturer specifica ons.” Though PartsTrader has not yet impacted the New England area, Cushing believes that these type of insurer-mandated parts programs are the biggest challenge facing the industry, and he fears that it will soon spread to impact his company’s market area. “I can see aliena on of customers, delayed deliveries, reduced profits and most of all, dissa sfied consumers. The only winners in this game are State Farm and PartsTrader.”

What can be done about PartsTrader, insurer steering, and other issues plaguing the industry? Cushing advises, “I hope that all par es involved (mainly collision shop owners) work towards ge ng educated and ‘doing their homework’ before embracing this product. Let your thoughts be known. Be vocal. Get involved!”

2014 Dodge Challenger Revives The Shaker hood scoop Who can forget the “Shaker” hood scoop? It remains a symbol of American car culture and became prominent on the Dodge Challenger R/T in 1970, just a year or so before federal restric ons and insurance hikes put an end to the celebrated muscle car era.

But for 2014, Dodge has revived tradi on, unveiling the retro Challenger R/T Shaker. Fire up the eight-track.

While Ford and Chevy go head-to-head, evolving from the crude handling traits that befit tradi on, morphing the muscle car into a spor er era, Dodge con nues to play retro. All three sport preposterous (and glorious) exhaust notes and average at best interiors — a staple of 60s muscle — but unlike its rivals, the Challenger s ll can’t turn corners. There’s something wonderful about that. Like being worse, in the case of a muscle car’s handling, is actually be er. A er all, who bought a HEMI Cuda because of how well it navigated Mulholland’s twists?

The 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker con nues its trip down memory lane, featuring a fully func oning hood scoop that shakes with the forceful V-8’s pulses, grabbing cooler air to feed the engine. Accompanying the scoop is a Mopar cold-air intake, conical air filter and op mized air box to “help boost performance” — although Dodge says the power ra ngs of the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 remain unchanged at 375 hp and 410 lb.- . of torque. The Super Track Pak comes standard, and Dodge hopes the Shaker acts as a gateway drug to the rest of the Mopar medicine chest of performance parts. Despite the Challenger not being a match for the ‘Stang and Camaro in terms of sales, you’ve got to appreciate the commitment in keeping with tradi on.

Both inside and out, the Shaker features unique accents like “Shaker” logos, decals, a glorious body colored grille, and all-new 20 x 8-inch five-spoke wheels with a sa n ma e clear-coat finish. Arriving in dealerships early next year, with a premium of just $2,500 above the regular R/T, the Shaker starts at $36,995. That’s a damn good price for a chunk of American muscle, and a look that’s as retro cool as its available Plum Crazy coloring.

Distracted Driving Survey Shows Mature Drivers Catching Up on Phone Usage Annual State Farm Distracted Driving survey shows drivers use phones for much more than talking.

State Farm released its annual research report on distracted driving, with troubling findings according to the largest auto insurer in the U.S. Though cell phone use and tex ng while driving remain a serious concern on the na on’s highways, with increasing frequency drivers admit to other distrac ng behaviors, par cularly accessing the internet while driving.

The July 2013 survey of nearly 1000 motorists highlights a growing safety concern: a significant increase in the percentage of drivers who own smart phones, par cularly among drivers age thirty and older. Addi onally, the percentage of drivers who access the internet on their phone while driving has nearly doubled over the past five years, going up from 13 percent in 2009 to 24 percent in 2013.

The survey results also showed the use of hands-free cell phones while driving has increased, while the percentage of people talking on a hand-held cell phone or tex ng while driving has become stagnant over the past three years.

“As smart phone ownership increases for all age groups, the safety community must ensure we are keeping pace with our understanding of the types of distrac ons drivers face,” said Chris Mullen, Director of Technology Research at State Farm. “Much a en on is paid toward reducing tex ng while driving, but we must also be concerned about addressing the growing use of mul ple mobile web services while driving.”

While much of the distracted driving focus has been on young people, the data indicates that the percentage of motorists who own smart phones is increasing for all ages: •Ages 18-29: 78% in 2011 to 86% in 2013 •Ages 30-39: 60% in 2011 to 86% in 2013 •Ages 40-49: 47% in 2011 to 82% in 2013 •Ages 50-64: 44% in 2011 to 64% in 2013 •Ages 65+: 23% in 2011 to 39% in 2013 State Farm asked drivers to share how distrac ng they find a variety of common occurrences: Continued on Page 34

To a lesser degree, 44 percent of survey respondents were extremely likely to support technology that would prevent tex ng or emailing on a cell phone while driving.

“State Farm con nues to support a mul -pronged approach to encouraging more engaged driving,” Mullen said. “Legisla on, enforcement, educa on and technology all have a role to play in making our roads safer for all who share them.”

Repairers and recyclers have developed long standing business rela onships based on mutual respect, integrity and the quality of parts and services provided. URG opposes the mandatory use of any procurement tool which may weaken or poten ally sever this rela onship. The cost of parts and quality of service go hand in hand when a collision repair facility selects recycled parts. Mandates take away the freedom a collision repairer currently enjoys when selec ng an auto recycler as a business partner.

URG members feel that part selec on and acquisi on should not be based merely on the cost of the part, but also on the quality of the part and business acumen of the recycler who will ul mately supply the part.

URG believes online technology solu ons help drive efficiency in the parts procurement process and create value. URG’s crea on of URGNet, an interac ve recycled parts database, is a product of that belief. Parts data from more than 500 URG auto recycler members provides users of different online parts programs with direct and immediate access to comprehensive recycled parts inventory, availability and pricing. Keeping recycled parts available, affordable and compe ve in today’s business environment were major considera ons in URG’s decision not to endorse Parts Trader.
