ENDGAME MOVIE REVIEW

Written by Luke Holland - Page Designed By Nicholas Irvine A few weeks ago, I watched the hit blockbuster “Avengers: Endgame” and it was an alright movie. I’ll preface what I’m about to say with this, I have been a Marvel fan since Tobey Maguire walked down the street throwing finger guns at people and awkwardly dancing in front of walkways. Iron-Man was a masterpiece of its time and it was amazing to see the beautiful universe that came after. Now that we have put my Marvel fanboy aspects aside, there were flaws in this movie, therefore transforming to, what could be, the best movie of this decade into a mediocre masterpiece. A big issue that came along was its runtime, over 3 hours long! This movie has the runtime of over 30 Bohemian Rhapsodies (the song, not the dumpster fire of a movie). Most of this runtime was also not memorable and, in some cases, boring! Without spoiling any of this but also having my review written for people who have seen the movie, I shall refer to the second act of the film as “Oceans 14”. “Oceans 14” was a cheap use to create a pile of fanservice so people thought it was good, and hopefully they wouldn’t question the NON EXISTENT logic of these scenes. Also, the build-up to “Oceans 14” was boring! There was nothing of true importance that came up during the (what seemed like) 25 minutes of filler. As much as I could try and argue that this movie is overrated, I do believe it lives to a good amount of hype. The story was quite intriguing and the ending was so satisfying yet it also leaves a lot up to speculation (and I hope it isn’t plot holes that left me speculating). Even through all my trash talking, I am going to ask you all to do one thing. Watch Avengers: Endgame in theatres. Why? So it can beat Avatar. Think about how much time, effort and money has gone into the MCU to lead to this epic finale. Now think about if you can remember a single name of a character from Avatar. You don’t like superhero movies? Cool, watch Endgame. The movie was spoiled for you? Cool, watch Endgame. You’ve already seen it? Cool, watch Endgame. Because as much as we can complain about the MCU and Endgame, it definitely deserves to be #1 in the box office compared to Avatar.

These photos of the beautiful beach neighbouring our school were taken by the Mordialloc College media team. After learning different compositions and camera angles in photography, I was inspired to take these photos for my chosen theme: nature. In my trek, I also noticed that the rocks running along the pier have unfortunately been littered with rubbish after the fun-filled weekends. Although these were taken on a particularly sunny day, I feel that it’s important that we maintain the healthiness and beauty of Mordialloc beach. These photos display what the beach looked like and I hope that it will inspire the local residents to keep it free from litter. Our Mordialloc students believe a clean up should be in order, especially after the weekends. Help us de-litter and it will continue to be a sight to see!

#MeToo

How Australian Laws Prevented the #MeToo Movement from Blowing Up Designed by Emma Schultz Wr itt en by Aaliyah Zaph experiences with abusers. In Australia, the defamation laws protect the accused rather than the accuser, meaning it’s up to the accuser to prove their claims; the United States’ defamation laws are the literal opposite. This allows the accused to sue the plaintiff and sources voicing the claims millions. image: shutterstock Since Alyssa Milano’s viral anti-sexual violence tweet, the #MeToo movement has skyrocketed, making a noticeable presence on social media across the world. #MeToo even remained in the top ten most frequently searched phrases in India a whole year after the tweet was originally posted. In said tweet, Milano encourages anyone who has been sexually harassed/assaulted to reply to her tweet with #MeToo - an attempt to show people the magnitude of the problem. Within hours of posting the tweet, it had blown up with already millions of women sharing their stories. This anti-sexual violence movement gathered momentum, sweeping across the globe: from Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta to Chinese athlete Lui Lai Yui, women across the world have come together to share their experiences with sexual violence. But why was Australia left out from this uprising? When someone is accused of sexual misconduct, they are usually able to file a defamation lawsuit for ‘ruining’ their previously good reputation with ‘false’ claims. Australia has very different defamation laws compared to other countries, and many sources agree that the legal side could be the main barrier preventing women from speaking openly about their

5

Australia’s law silences women and backs them into a corner of fear, generally emotionally, but with an additional financial based anxiety. ‘Orange Is The New Black star’ Yael Stone, an Australian native who currently resides in the US, opened up about her sexual misconduct experiences with ex co star Geoffrey Rush. In the New York Times interview, she voices concern regarding the financial quagmire that would’ve occurred had she attempted to speak out against him without the American legal advice and pro bono representation she received in December 2018. How are women expected to exercise their freedom of speech, their freedom to speak about the horrors they endured, with this huge financial burden looming over them? There have been previous attempts to call out and condemn Geoffrey Rush. In 2017, an anonymous woman accused Rush of acting inappropriately towards her during her time co-starring with him in Sydney’s Theatre Company’s King Leer. Rush consequently attempted to sue the newspaper who had painted him out to be a “pervert”. This action forced the anonymous woman to reveal her identity and testify in court, the outcome set to be known in early 2019. Australian laws need to stop protecting abusers. Australian laws need to support survivors. Australian laws need to change.

Global Warming

It affects everyone. Ava Collison

Global warming is the gradual increase in the global temperature due to greenhouse gases in the air. Due to burning things like coal, we produce an excess of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that go into the atmosphere and trap heat inside the ozone layer. This is really bad because it is causing the ice at the poles to melt and the sea levels, as well as causing the endangerment of some animals as they lose their habitats. Global warming affects everyone. It affects people, plants and animals.

On September 20th, ‘School Strike 4 Climate’ is inviting YOU to join the Global Climate Strike and stand up for a safe climate future. Taking place mere days before the UN Emergency Climate Summit, the Global Climate Strike is hoping to show politicians making decisions about our futures how vital their choices are in regards to not only our future, but our planet’s as well. On March 15th, 1.6 million people across the world went on strike. This movement is anticipated to be taken to the next level on September 20th, 2-4pm.

It affects us as the oceans rise and people lose their homes. People who live in areas close to the sea level are having to move further and further away as the sea rises and land is lost. It affects plants as they must move further and further away from the equator to find a proper habitat. As the weather gets hotter, plants must move to find cooler climates, and animals are forced to move so they can get food and keep up with the plants. To reduce this problem, we can use renewable energy that doesn’t produce greenhouse gases, we can reduce the energy use in our homes by using less aircon, turning the lights off, watching less tv. We can rally to get the government to take action against climate change. We must prevent climate change, or we will lose our planet.

PHOTOGRAPHY: NOREIGH ZUNIGA Hi, Noreigh here! Despite being focused on school - doing mostly science and another language (lots of stress I know), I also have a somewhat creative side, more stress-free and care free. I like playing music - the flute most particularly, I like drawing and taking photos; lots and lots of photos. Photography is probably - what I could say - a stress reliever from school and all the homework that is given out. Most weekends, even if I don’t have much time, I try to squeeze in a little photo session - I go out of the house, with my camera and just take photos. I like to immerse myself in nature, not worrying about anything; no homework, no essays - just me, and my camera. Well, here’s a snippet of some of my photos and I hope you enjoy them! Also, if you would like to see more of them (totally not a shameless plug), you can follow me on Insta.

D E N N E

WRITTEN AND DESIGNED BY JACK CROWE There comes a time in teenagehood where the songs on the charts just aren’t good enough or interesting. When I diagnosed myself with this boredom, I picked up the ukulele, the violin, the piano and the pen and paper, and began to surge my ideas and creativity into the world. During this phase, I dug through Spotify playlists, progressed through movie soundtracks, downloaded Shazam, you name it. Now there’s not a day that goes by where I don’t add a song to one of my numerous playlists, or find a new chord progression to add an addictive melody to.

“Six years ago, music changed

everything I thought I knew about myself.”

Stumbling upon this passion was ultimately life changing, which is why I would like to share it with you. Here are five of my personal favourite albums and EPs. Go ahead, check them out, and take a listen. Yes, they may not be what you call a banger or a ballad, but these are sensational, underrated pieces of craft and artwork that are yet to scratch the surface of popularity and fame. Some may be weird or might completely divert from modern pop or structure, but a key thing to remember is that an artist, singer or producer does this deliberately. They mingle and manipulate your thoughts to submerge you in a place you have never found yourself. Start with the intro, read the lyrics you hear, notice the thick ambience of their instrumentals, and progress down the track list until you reach the final song. Enjoy.

BROODS - Don’t Feed The Pop Monster Having written with artists such as Lorde and Alex Hope, this kiwi sibling duo tap into a heavy and gothic genre of pop music that is greatly underappreciated. With this album however, I was surprised. While the darker, modern production techniques were reminiscent within their music, they complimented it with an 80’s synth pop vibe. At first I was taken aback by Caleb and Georgia Nott’s new style, but after having it on repeat for a month, I guess you could say that I love it. Something they’ve done with this album is change what we think about the attitudes displayed within songs, contrasting sad lyrics with hopeful and energetic production. On their track, ‘To Belong’, I found one of my favourite lyrics too, being,

“if you love the flight, hold on for life”.

@b roo d s m u s i c

The Venus Project - Vol.1 Through my discovery of the band BROODS, I found that the vocalist, Georgia Nott, was working on her own solo project… well, not exactly. The Venus Project began as a solo project, however, Georgia decided to expand the theme of the album by inviting numerous creative women to assist in its construction. This includes the production and mixing engineers, all the way to the illustrators for the cover artwork. Not only should this album be recognised for celebrating female empowerment, particularly within the music industry, but for its diverse and unheard sound that cannot be fitted to a genre. ‘Vol.1’ defies the structure of songs and leaves the listeners in awe. Honestly, we need more music like ‘Vol.1’, which leaves myself extremely excited for the following album (whether that is to come or not).

@t h even u s proj ec t

11

Conan Gray - Sunset Season I have no doubt that this new artist will explode onto the radio in the near future. If you like Billie Eilish or Troye Sivan, then ‘Sunset Season’ is the album you unknowingly crave. Conan Grey experiments with his soft vocals, layering and stacking them to compliment with some heavy, yet simple production. His image and attitude as an artist is greatly prevalent within this EP, ultimately being a relatable and genuine person to his listeners. Interestingly, music was not the first passion Conan wanted to pursue either, having a YouTube channel to showcase his many talents and personality traits. His music ranges all the way from his song ‘Crush Culture’, an upbeat and sarcastic song about romantic relationships, to ‘Lookalike’, a song that aggressively tugs at the heart strings.

@c on an g ra y

Dodie - Human Dodie has released numerous flawless EP’s to Spotify, however, this recent one captivated my attention straight away. Personally, I have always been used to the genres of indie pop and alternative music, but her music is addictive in an almost childlike way. It’s hard to explain, but if you listen to it, you’ll know what I mean. Not only do the soft, delicate vocals intrigue the audience, but the strings, fun and quirky piano patterns and ukulele plucks seem extremely hopeful, optimistic and uplifting, despite the experiences from her darker past looming upon each song. Dodie discusses her experiences in naïve and toxic relationships, confronting her depression to tell the world that she is only Human and forgives herself for the mistakes she’s made. She tells a wise life lesson for everyone who chooses to listen and the musical production fits it perfectly –

“I’m so human”.

@doddl e oddl e

Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Revival This album is extraordinary, and is nothing I ever would have dreamed of hearing. Vancouver Sleep Clinic seriously outdid themselves on this record, and I don’t think many other artists will live up to this masterpiece. ‘Revival’ lies under the genres of indie, alternative, and shoegazing. Despite the funny name, shoegazing is a genre that combines dreamy, ethereal vocals with unique and hypnotising production. While these songs may put you in an eternal sleep, it will also surprise you and leave you in awe. This is all I will say for this one, as I don’t want to spoil this insane piece of underrated art.

So find a comfy position, chuck on your headphones, and press the play button… @van c ouve r sl e e p c l in ic

MET GALA 2019

reviewed by Aaliyah Zaph

the good, the bad

Camila Mendes vs Lili Reinhart

“We created a look with unexpected materials while paying homage to the ‘camp’ theme through an exaggeration of python skin, and the masculine structure of the jacket cut paired with the femininity of our ‘F wedge’ thigh-high boots,” shares Ferrgamo creative designer Paul Andrew on Solange Knowles’ Met Gala look.

The Riverdale stars and in-real-life besties stunned in similar flowing blue train details, bringing both OTT dresses to new levels of campiness. Camila took inspiration from Susan Sontag’s quote “camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of three million feathers” and essentially brought Big Bird to life - in a good way... Even with Camila’s colour-coordinated blue and yellow quirky (yet glamorous) eye look and accessories, it was Lili’s vibrant makeup, startling hair and uniquely shaped dress that stole the show. Camila’s look was more suited to a premier event rather than the Met Gala, where the outfits aren’t meant to be traditionally beautiful.

Solange Knowles’ daring python-print one piece radiates Fashion Nova brand deal rather than campiness - and unfortunately, the matching thigh highs only reinforce the Nova Babe vibes. Although it’s certainly a challenge to dress such casual playsuit for the Met, Ashley Graham snapped (especially after having to decline her 2016 Met Gala invite because no one would dress her). The sheer gloves and stockings, glimmering with a sophisticated yet over the top jewelled pattern, combined with the shimmering green hues and invisible heels creates a winning look.

Solange Knowles vs Ashley Graham

“Graham and Knowles seemed to have opposite approaches to their footwear: Knowles’ python thigh highs demanded attention while Solange created a shoeless allusion with the extension of her tights down to her feet.”

who wore it best?

The 2019 Met Gala’s theme was announced on April 9th, 2019 as ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion.’

and the plain embarassing Naomi Campbell vs Hailey Rhode Bieber Naomi Campbell’s clever take on a classic, feminine pink dress put Hailey Bieber’s bland turtleneck dress to shame. Pink fishnet clad leg peeking out a daring slit, sexy yet classy and flowing dress, bed of feathers bringing her look to new levels of campiness, Naomi stunned. Despite Hailey’s daunting back opening (showcasing the amount of work that had went into her fake tan job), her boring attire simply wasn’t up to the high standards.

The intricate details and unique structure bringing Madelaine Petsch’s Tinkerbell-reminiscent dress to life contrasts intensely with her auburn hair, complete with brand new bangs. Madelaine manages to have fun with the look while still remaining elegant and classy - Hailee Steinfeld, on the other hand, donned a frilly, ombre dress with frizzy hair bringing together an 80s look - I, however, was too busy cringing at the oversized Pic Collage font decorating the front of her gown to appreciate her efforts with the outfit. Both were definitely camp, but the Pic Collage font was the biggest deciding factor in the end. Sorry Hailee! That being said, Hailee’s outfit still fit the theme of ‘camp’ and was a quirky, standout intepretation of the prompt, complete with a camera prop!

exclusive interview with ruthie barone

written by Aaliyah Zaph

we talk meaning of makeup, inspirations & more with the young entrepreneur There is something oddly refreshing about Ruthie Barone. After a quick flick through her instagram feed, you may think you have the young MUA figured out: cool piercings, untouched yet stylish brows, vibrant rainbow hues brushed delicately across her eyelids (juxtaposing with the bold intensity of her unclassic eyeliner shapes), captivating ocean eyes, an absurd number of hair clips pinning her platinum hair into place (yet she still manages to make it look edgy and trendy)... in other words, you see her as your quintessential instagram makeup artist/model/girl with cool style that you lowkey resent because she makes everything from running a business to leaving her eyebrows unplucked seem effortless. However, take a closer look and things are not as seems. Those simplistic statement earrings that adorn her ears? She made them herself. That lightweight, baggy top she’s

17

casually posing in? She designed it herself. In fact, on top of filming content for her youtube channel and posting updates to her thousands of followers, Ruthie is also the entrepreneur to her own t-shirt, art print and earring line: ruthiebaroneline! “I had planned from the beginning to start with t-shirts and art prints with my work on them but to transition to a full on brand,” Ruthie reveals. “Before starting this business, I had learned a lot from selling on Etsy, Ebay, and Depop.” Ruthie additionally advices other young people looking at creating their own business to start on the same platforms she did. “It will teach you so much about talking with customers, how to keep customers happy, money, and so much more.”

Despite the constant fluctuating trends in fashion, Ruthie still manages to stay true to her style. “My inspiration is truly what I like with a touch of what I think others will enjoy/trends,” the twenty four year old explained. “The first pair [of earrings] I made were my “VENUS” earrings, and they are still one of my favorites.” (picture of Ruthie wearing a “VENUS” earring to the right). Nowadays, it’s increasingly harder to stand out in the beauty community. 60% of beauty content on YouTube is created by influencers, and, as of 2016, over 5 million beauty videos were posted on Youtube. Not to mention the fact that of the top two hundred beauty videos posted, 86% of them were created by beauty vloggers rather than actual beauty companies. Despite this high-stake competition culture, Ruthie still uses makeup as a stress reliever and isn’t afraid to experiment with anomalous styles. “I began exploring creative makeup in 2015 after working as a Makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics while I was at University full time,” Ruthie explained. “I already had the interest in makeup, but over time I began treating my eyes like a canvas to express myself. I had always loved painting, playing music, or really anything creative and I think this was just another way to create, relieve stress, and connect with others.”

“One of the reasons I post two photos of some looks is I am fascinated by changing perspective - how one moment or thing or visual changes depending on the lighting, the angle, the mood, etc. it’s true of people. of everything really.”

“makeup does not need to be traditionally beautiful”

Although Ruthie cited relatively broad inspirations (revealing that she prefers going by her gut instinct and likes “expressing feelings or thoughts through art, music helps”), it seems even everyday objects get Ruthie’s creative juices flowing. “Was inspired by this little floral granny bag I thrifted,” Ruthie wrote on Instagram in regards to the finished product: a glowy, simplistically bold eye look, brought to life with golden, sparkling yet modest hues of gentle, neutral tones. Ruthie credited another one of her bold looks to “ancient tribal tattoos which represent many different cultural beliefs, statuses, and self expression.” This isn’t even the only way Ruthie stands out in the overwhelming waves of the beauty community. By playing around with different geometric shapes as well as splattered, uncontained art-hoe inspired looks, Ruthie is able to showcase her variety of skills in the beauty department.

“STARRY” earring (pictured top left) and “THREADED” earring (pictured bottom right) are available for purchase on Ruthie’s website

18

Ruthie also mentioned that her account is a creative outlet where she can freely express herself - opposed to being obsessed with perfection. When asked how her makeup ability had developed over time, Ruthie answered, “I think my style has changed a bit and I have definitely improved my skills since starting. However, it is really always mainly about expressing myself and creating art, not the details of what style or technique I use if that makes sense.” Since the start of her career, Ruthie has reinforced the evanescence of makeup. “Makeup is so temporary, it can’t last forever. I love the closeness of creating and destroying when it comes to the art of makeup,” Ruthie captioned a 2016 picture of her half closed eye drenched in a messy coating of foundation, bleeding into her eyebrows and demolishing the previous, sophisticated yellow and purple look. In more recent posts, she once again brings up this concept of makeup’s temporariness. “It can be destroyed in an instant. Makeup can be art, or not.”

“I’ve always been fascinated with the temporary quality makeup has. How it can be one thing and then nothing a moment later” Ruthie already has plans to expand the company. Recent arrivals of modern, trendy hair clips are available for purchase on her website. “Future plans include expanding my jewelry line! I would love to offer more fine jewelry options and continue to branch out,” Ruthie said excitedly. If you’re looking for your new favourite accessories, ruthiebaroneline is the way to go! From you crave a bold statement (like the “FLAME 2.0” earring) or want to appease your vintage aesthetic (like the “THREADED ANGEL” earring), Ruthie’s got it all!

RUTHIE’S RAINBOWS Wanna recreate one of Ruthie’s iconic rainbow looks? Look no further - we got you covered!

“used @makebeautyofficial face gloss,” Ruthie captioned this camp met gala/pride inspired look after reminding followers to use her coupon code ‘MAKERUTHIE’

Ruthie supported makeup company ‘Deck of Scarlet,’ using their newly launched No.13 palette. “This month the palette came with a jelly that I used on my brows,” the twenty four year old said.

Ruthie brought this “glossy egg” look to life thanks to Milk Makeup’s eye gloss and kush brow products. The cruelty free, paraben free, 100% vegan company has amassed an astounding 1.4 million followers.

SURVIVE HIGH SCHOOL Bec Brumby

Emma Schultz Check The School Website

The school website has a heap of useful information on it, including things like when you can visit the uniform shop and important dates, like excursions. There will probably be information in there like the bell times and the school map as well as other useful things so you know some more information about the school and how everything in year 7 works.

Be On Time To Class

Teachers hate students who are late! Alway do your best to be on time so you don’t miss anything. What if your teacher was just telling the class that you have a test soon? Don’t want to miss that. Also, you might have to do lunchtime duty. If you are late to class it will disturb the class from what they are doing and maybe make your teacher annoyed and then you might get lunchtime duty or after school detention or a call home to parents so make sure you are on time.

Listen And Pay Attention

If you don’t listen in class you probably won’t know what to do and teachers might get irritated with you because they will have to explain it again and it could be very important information like a test. So if you don’t know what to do then you may not do as well as you would have liked.

Your planner is very important to take notes and know when things are due like homework and tests. If you are in after school clubs you might need to put down what times you need to go and what days they are on. The planner also has a map on it so you can find your way around the school.

Study Hard

You should always study hard for your classes, because if you have upcoming tests or exams you will need to be prepared for them and if you are not doing very well in something, you should study for it so you can improve.

How To Sur vive High School Be Organised

lt is very important to be organised so you don’t get behind. It helps you to get things done on time so you know that everything is ready and then that gives you more time to do other things you like to do, like watching YouTube or Netflix or drawing, acting or singing, for example.

Get Involved In Clubs

When you get involved in clubs you are not only doing what you like, but you are also able to meet new people with similar interests to you and hey, you never know, you might even become friends with them which is a bonus for you!

Be Friendly To Everyone

By being friendly to everyone, you will be able to make new friends as well as meeting new people you might not have otherwise. In addition, by being friendly with teachers, they will notice how nice you are and will think well of you.

Don’t Compare Yourself

Don’t compare yourself to others because you are yourself and don’t need to try to be someone else. When you compare yourself to others, you open up criticism on yourself. You have the things that you are good at and others have the things they are good at.

Get Lots Of Sleep

If you get lots of sleep then you will be able to focus more in class and do better because you won’t be as tired. You will also be more productive and get more work done in class. To have a full night of sleep, you generally need around 7 to 10 hours of sleep.

Take Notes

If you take notes in class you will be able remember stuff better tests or exams. In addition, when you are taking notes only write down the important points, don’t write the whole thing unless you were told to.

Do Your Homework

If you do your homework it will not only improve your grades but it will also help you to understand what you are learning about in that particular subject a lot better so make sure you do your homework. If you are sick one day and don’t get the homework, ask a friend to get it for you so you don’t fall behind.

DANIEL LOZA: PHOTOGRAPHY This pretty star found its way onto my parents’ boat while they were fishing. They went to reel up the line, but instead of pulling up a Flathead, they caught this cutie! The star jumped off of the rod and quickly made itself comfortable on the boat. I give it a 12/10 for cuteness! (By the way, it did make its way safely back into the water.)
