FIA2 Art as Lens Experimental Folio
Reflective Statement In exploring the concept of Art as a Lens, the following folio explores the traditional Haft-sin table, and specifically the fishbowl, both in a cultural and personal context. That in, experiments were developed via divergent process concerning idea development, media and technique. They were moreover guided by the inquiry learning model. As such, the final works displayed in the folio demonstrate twodimensional, three-dimensional, digital, mixed media and time-based experiments. The cultural context of the Haft-sin table is inherent – it’s being used during Nowruz (Persian new year). However, I am more intimately tied to one object within the set – the fishbowl – having always been responsible for its set up and care. Moreover, I most intimately connect with its symbolism: the movement and growth in life. In developing my folio, much inspiration was drawn from contemporary artists Holly Warburton, Roya Ebtehaj and Nimisha Doongarwal. Primarily, both Ebtehaj and Doongarwal interweave cultural and western elements in their work to unpack the complexities of their identities as immigrants. I employed this largely in my collage and digital manipulation wherein the contrasts between traditionally Persian elements and Australian documentation allowed me to reconcile the two facets of my own identity.
