INTRODUCTION

Through our affiliation with the World Academy of Sport, Moreton Bay College has established the Athlete Development Programme (ADP) to support high performing student-athletes in achieving their sporting and academic goals. Our objective is to develop confident, independent, resilient, and courageous students whilst nurturing their physical talents.

AIM S

The Athlete Development Programme (Years 7-12) is designed to assist national and state level student-athletes, who are currently attending, or planning to attend Moreton Bay College.

The Athlete Development Programme will support students in tailoring their academic needs and will prepare athletes with the skills and knowledge for the demands of high-performance sport. The programme aims to assist students in balancing their demanding sporting and academic calendars in a supportive educational environment.

The programme is designed to cater for students who are emerging or high performing athletes, and who want a holistic, well-rounded approach to their development in both sport and education. The aim is to develop leadership, teamwork, time management and communication skills, through providing a range of specialised health and support services.

• Mentoring with current and past elite athletes, coaches, and old girls with playing and coaching experience

• Athlete lunchbox sessions – access to expert keynote speakers on subject matters such as nutrition, sleep, psychology, and biomechanics

• Access to webinars and sessions facilitated by the World Academy of Sport

• Access to individualised strength and conditioning sessions

• Access to onsite physiotherapy

• Access to Aussie Athletes Agency (US College system) and follow up support provided by Head of Athlete Development

• Wellbeing support

There will be no additional costs for any student directly involved in the Athlete Development Programme (camps/tours are an exception).

FACILITIES

Moreton Bay College boasts some of the best academic, cultural, and sporting facilities in Queensland. Across 20 hectares, original and modern buildings are set amongst native trees, green ovals and landscaped gardens and provide student centered learning spaces and first-class sporting facilities which include:

• 50m Olympic sized eight lane swimming pool plus an indoor learn to swim pool

• 2 x Indoor Sports Centres

• Gymnastic Hall

• Aerobics Room with sprung floor

• 2 x Ovals

• Synthetic Cricket Pitch (with nets)

• 7 state of the art multipurpose courts (Tennis & Netball)

• 2 x tartan long jump pits

• Throwing circles with nets

• Fully equipped Strength and Conditioning room including cardio equipment

• Fleet of sailing pacers

ELIGIBILITY

The Athlete Development Programme is open for the inclusion of all sports, both individual and team, for students in Years 7 – 12. Eligibility is based on the current level of representation achieved within their Sport in the last 12 months

Students must be extensively involved in the Sporting program/s where training, or practice is essential daily, and for a considerable number of hours per week.

Senior students (Year 11 & 12) will need to determine that there is little risk to QCE points with the removal of one academic line. Those students who are ATAR eligible need to acknowledge the removal of an academic line may have an impact on ATAR outcomes. Risk will be assessed by the Committee, in conjunction with the Deputy Head of Teaching and Learning.

EXPECTATIONS

Students must also demonstrate and adhere to the following:

• Demonstrate attitudes/behaviour consistent with the responsibilities of the program including a positive attitude, being well-organised, diligent and responsible, and pursuing personal excellence academically and in the performance domain.

• Demonstrate good sportsmanship and conduct at all training sessions and sporting fixtures/competitions.

• Wearing the correct uniform to the highest standard

• Sound academic record, maintaining a conscientious effort across all subjects

• A commitment to the school values as outlined in the student diary

• Meet all commitments of academic areas and procedures for attendance

• A commitment to the Moreton Bay College sporting and co-curricular program (exception being State/National/International events)

• Attendance at the Athlete Development and Leadership Camp

• Families are required to follow College procedures and seek permission from the Head of Secondary for school-approved absence to attend competitions, camps, tours etc.

• Students are required to liaise directly with classroom teachers about assessment expectations, including applying in advance for Rescheduling and/or Extension of assessment tasks due to School Approved Absence.

All potential applicants must meet the Moreton Bay College Positive Behaviours Policy.

A failure to meet the criteria at any time may lead to removal from the program.

A student’s application for a modified academic program, if granted, may be revoked if any of the above expectations are not met.

YEAR 7 & 8 STUDENTS

Students in Years 7 & 8 will take their ‘ADP’ lesson in the Learning Enhancement Centre (LEC). Students will be able to seek assistance with their academic work or for organisation or time management strategies to complete assessment tasks and/or application forms for Extension/Rescheduling of assessment due to school approved absence.

YEAR 9 & 10 STUDENTS

Students will be with the Head of Athlete Development for their ‘ADP’ lessons in the Athlete Development Centre. They can seek assistance with their academic work or for organisation or time management strategies to complete assessment tasks and/or application forms for Extension/Rescheduling of assessment due to school approved absence.

YEAR 11 & 12 STUDENTS

Students will be with the Head of Athlete Development for their ‘study’ lessons. As a Senior Student, it is their responsibility to utilise this time in an independent, mature manner. They may also need to seek assistance from the Head of Athlete Development for organisation or time management strategies to complete assessment tasks and/or application forms for Extension/Rescheduling of assessment due to school-approved absence.

Applications for the Athlete Development Programme must be submitted, with all supporting documentation at least two weeks before the end of each semester. Where possible, eligibility will be advised before the beginning of the following semester.

All relevant copies of reports, references, certificates, awards, representation honours/achievements must be attached to the application.

The Athlete Development committee will make decisions of eligibility for the programme

The decision of the committee will be final, and decisions will be communicated in writing to the applicant. Successful applications will be sent an Acceptance of Offer and Contract for entry into the Athlete Development Programme. By signing this, both students and parents/carers indicate their acceptance of the conditions of enrolment into the programme

The Committee will also continue to monitor the students’ academic progress and make adjustments with the applicant as required.

Students commencing at the school the following year, are welcome to apply.

CRITERIA

Students are eligible for the Athlete Development Programme based on the current level of representation achieved within their Sport in the last 12 months. Students must be extensively involved in the Sporting program/s where training, or practice is essential daily, and for a considerable number of hours per week.

All students selected into the Programme are expected to contribute significantly to the school sport program, where they will represent MBC, attend team practices, as well as act as a role model for sporting excellence and behaviour.

Students must demonstrate a commitment to meeting College expectations as per the Positive Behaviours Policy.

On selection into the Athlete Development Programme, the student athlete will be placed in one of two categories for the year:

Category Criteria

High Performance

• Member of an Australian Team/ representing Australia

• Member of an Australian/National squad

• Individual medallist at a National Championship*

• Individual accolade at a National Championship (eg. named player of the tournament/championship)

Emerging

• Member of a Queensland Team (Number 1 team if more than 1 team is selected)

• Member of a QAS sporting program^

• Individual medallist at a State Championships*

^Youfor2032 programs are ineligible

* Team relay events are ineligible

All selection is at the discretion of the Director of Sport and Head of Athlete Development. Applications outside of the above criteria may be considered.

Applications for the Athlete Development Programme must be submitted by Week 6 - Term 4 (for Semester 1 the following year) or Week 6 - Term 2 (for Semester 2 start), with all supporting documentation. Where possible, eligibility will be advised before the beginning of the following semester.

Enrolment into the Athlete Development Programme requires an annual application. There is no automatic guarantee of acceptance.
