FIA2: Art as Lens Experimental Folio
Reflective Statement The focus of this experimental folio was mirrors as a lens to explore how artists process the difference between reflection and perception through their art. By working predominantly with my own image reflected in different mirrors in various contexts, I sought to experiment with notions of female beauty and societal pressures surrounding vanity and flaws. The personal context for this folio is centred around my own relationship with mirrors, both loathing and love. I remember being 13 and avoiding mirrors with a fervent passion, hating the asymmetry in my reflection. As I have matured, I have begun to embrace my own reflection, but with it has come a guilt, a fear of vanity. A fear that the image I have constructed for the mirror’s reflection is somehow fake or a lie. This folio was influenced by female artists who use art to explore female image and notions of self. Sarah Detweiler explores self-image as a mother in a historical context through single colour acrylic and embroidered paintings. While Zoe Aguerreberry paints her reflection in real time in a blocky, layered style. I incorporated elements of their practices and philosophies into my own techniques.
