FIA3 – Art as Code
Artists Statement Through investigating Art as Code, I explored the surrealism and street-art movements. Street-art is a form of self-expression which inspired my skateboard planning. The surrealist artist, Salvador Dali, has been of inspiration to my work due to his effective use of non-literal symbols to convey his overarching theme. Likewise, Jean-Michel Basquiat also inspired me as his exploration of subject matter is a reflection of himself and how he responds to societal issues. Consequently, Basquiat’s personal context and Dali’s cultural context throughout their work inspired me to explore the concept of perception. Through the use of non-literal symbols, I decided to display the cultural context of society’s perception and the personal context of perception of self. This is communicated through symbolism of the hands, eyes and broken mirror which are the emphasis of the skateboard. I experimented with two-dimensional, three-dimensional and time-based works with different focusses which led to my resolved work. Thus, this interactive, three-dimensional skateboard, ‘The Gaze’, explores perception as it is not only significant within my life but also because we live in a society where judgement and consciousness of appearance is increasingly relevant.
