FIA3- Art as Code
Artist Statement My piece is a response to Sophie Munns technique using a repetitive pattern in many of her artworks. Her focus for many works is the use of seeds and their preservation, inspiring my piece’s incorporation of the Greek meander decorative pattern, is the pattern representing my own heritage and communicates my own preservation of culture. The board has fabric on top of the rolled-on pattern that was cut using an exact-o knife and printed A4 paper to accurately capture the intricacy and simplistic shape of the pattern. The fabric is tied into a rope before being wrapped around the board, still revealing the base which shows the painted pattern. Surrounding the board is a white lace trim, which further shows the new purpose of the board: a food tray. On top of the board is artificial flowers, like my Grandmothers garden which further creates a personal context.
