FIA3- Art as Code
Artist Statement My key focus when creating my skateboard was in response to Alexander Calder and Andy Warhol works. After viewing there works and interpreting them surrounded by the idea of space. It became clear to me of what I wanted my skateboard to look like using a personal context to convey this idea. I started by drawing and sketching out a design of what I thought my skateboard might look like as seen in the supporting evidence. To incorporate the idea of self into my work I used the Italian flag as this is my heritage and created a boarder of the red, white and green colours around the edge of my skateboard which I hope to add paint to once the work is resolved. In the center of the work, I have painted a dark black background using acrylic paint creating a focal point in the piece as it contrasts from the colours displayed in the flag, representing space. To this I plan to add the planets in our solar system as well as stars and a sun and mood, overall achieving the space look I was aiming for.

Supporting evidence One of my initial design ideas, on the left side of the skateboard sketch I wanted to incorporate the idea of space by having all the different planets as well as stars and a moon
On the right side of my board, I wanted to include contrasting elements to the space theme this incorporating a tree as a center surrounded by flowers and birds
In the center of the skateboard, I would have included a symbol that had relevance and meaning to the piece creating a contrasting element
Here is an in depth drawing and sketch of one of my initial designs for the skateboard
After reconsidering both of my previous ideas, I decided that I was no longer happy with having the two contrasting elements and decided to use the idea of space as the focal point within my work and still find a way to incorporate a symbol within my work. Instead of dividing the board into different section I decided to use the space idea across the whole board by painting different planets as well as stars and a moon onto the board. To add a personal element to the piece I use my Italian heritage and culture as a way to connect more to this piece by adding a boarder of the Italian flag around the outside
In the picture above I sketched out my design in detail of what I in visioned this to look like once painted onto the board
