FIA3- Art as Code
Artist Statement Through my skateboard I’ve endeavoured to translate cultural and spiritual themes into artwork. To investigate formal contexts, my work drew much from Kaye Donachie’s figurative paintings which, subtly mystical and dream-like, often struck me as ghostly and deeply divine . The Cheshme Zakhm (the eye that wounds aka the evil eye) was the subject of my study. Though the 5000 year old pendant is found in countless cultures, I explore it more personally; in Iran and my family. This was explored through 2D, 3D, time-based and digital experiments and the materials of the resolved work. For one, painting on the mirror allowed me to experiment with transparency and thus, expand the dimensions of the piece beyond physicality, creating the illusion of a spirit in the reflected world. Often interpretated as the colour of the spirit, blue (and the cool palette) predominated the design. Further, the colour causes the body to produce chemicals that are calming and thus, exude feelings of tranquillity. This married with the colour’s symbolic meaning: faith and heaven.
