FIA3- Art as Code

Clouds is an acrylic painting created on a skateboard deck. The artwork explores my interpretation of myself by encapsulating significant elements of self including spiritual aura, heritage and personality which are all implemented through artistic code and symbols. I have combined all of these parts of myself and displayed them in a Celtic style painting which reflects my Irish heritage.

Artist Statement

I drew inspiration from the painted work of Elisa Jane Carmichael, and her exploration of natural beauty and implementation of heritage into her artworks. The clouds and the Celtic symbol at the center in my artwork are a reflection of the natural element air, which has a direct correlation with my zodiac sign, Aquarius. Additionally, the colours represented in the central mandala are present in my aura, whilst the monochrome pallet of the clouds reflects my personality.

Reflection on experiment This experiment was created after drawing inspiration from Elisa Jane Carmichael at the beginning of the Art as Code unit. I formed a pattern exploring an element of nature, clouds and created them in a Gaelic style which reflects my personal cultural heritage. Additionally, the use of clouds, which represent elements of air have a personal significant to me as they represent my star sign, Aquarius which is known as an air sign. I chose to create this work using pencil to mimic the carving techniques used by my ancestors to create artwork on wooden and metal objects.

Reflection on experiment For this experiment, I painted a base layer of organic shapes using two light tints of pink. Then, I added depth to the piece by including a top layer of a darker pink tone. The different elements of this artwork provide the overall piece with a very calming and soothing affect. The chosen colour of pink reflects this theme as it symbolizes love, kindness and relaxation. The monochromatic colour scheme is very easy on the eyes and provides a soothing effect. Additionally, the soft organic shapes used throughout the artwork are reflective of natural elements such as water or bubbles, continuing to add to the overall fluidity of the piece.

- Colour scheme (blue  orange) represents the shape and colour of my aura - Symbol in the middle Is the Celtic symbol for air, reflects heritage and star sign Aquarius (which is an air sign) - The Celtic knot pattern further represents my Irish heritage - Swirls going out from center continue the pattern of the Celtic air symbol

The clouds are individual monochrome paintings made from different shades of blue. The particular shades of blue chosen match the blue used in the Celtic mandala in the center of the skateboard, connecting the clouds to the center of my being. Clouds are symbolic of one's conscious, therefore the use of blue to create the clouds symbolizes my imaginative and loyal personality. Additionally, the clouds are inspired by a combination of Elisa Jane Carmichael's work and my personal Gaelic heritage. The organic, natural shapes used to create the clouds reflect Elisa’s exploration of natural beauty and her implementation of her heritage in her artworks.
