Year 12 Visual Arts in Practice IA2

Target market and concept

The target audience for the jewellery collection that I am making includes people who are in their late teens or early twenties, living in places close to the water like Manly in Brisbane, gold Cost , Southbank, etc. where my products would be sold at the markets. The style of jewellery that is being made would also appeal to people who shop for jewellery at shops like SHEIN or Meeks Jewellery as these places inspired the aesthetic style of the pieces. The theme of weather in my collection is sparked from conversations on the topic of climate change but also the science of weather. This theme is used to link each of the pieces together and to the community through the links to weather patterns in each of the jewellery pieces.

Inspiration The jewellery for sale on the SHEIN website inspired the theme of my collection. I personally liked how elements of weather were the theme of the pieces. The shapes used in their pieces are mostly organic shapes but also includes features of geometric shapes. The concept of weather allows for the use of the elements and principles of art like movement, pattern and a variety of colours. The concept of weather used through the jewellery pieces connects with the target audience as the weather can represent the way people are feeling, the impacts of climate change and also the way this work the idea of mother nature being a driving force of life. These pieces from SHEIN inspired the style and aesthetic of the pieces I made of polymer clay. The inspiration of using metal and the style of jewellery from Meeks Jewellery, the artist Jemica Ostrofski, connects to the idea that lack of recycling of metals has a negative impact on global warming and therefore climate change and the fact that in lighting storms lightning bolts often strike metal objects.

Object 1

Object 1 process

-

Two clouds will be cut one larger than the other so that one can be layered on top of the other using glue. The front and smaller cloud will be textured as to purposefully exemplify the visual features of clouds. The sun will connect to the side of the cloud design to represent the idea of the rays of sunlight shining through the clouds.

- During the workshop I successfully created a statement necklace which required me to texture, cut and polish metal using a texture hammer, tin snips and an electric polishing tool. - I drilled holes into the flat metal for the attachment of jump rings to connect the sun to the clouds and the chain to the whole design. - I used glue to layer the two cloud shapes in order to prevent movement in future.

Object 3 process

-

I initially cut out the shape of the lightning and then drilled the tip which caused the end to break. I also attempted to manipulate copper wire to create an outline of the bolt shape which did not turn as expected. These experimentations were then disregarded.

- There will be three lightning bolt shaped pieces of aluminum. - Each piece will be textured along the edge of the shape to create the idea of a static edge to lightning. - A gold pen will then be used to add colour to the texture representing the bright light that flashes when lightning strikes. - I made this product by cutting, shaping, texturing and colouring flat metal using tin snips, files and a centre punch and hammer. - I drilled a hole in the top of each lightning bolt shapes to attach a jump ring connecting them to the chain. - A clip and ring was added to the ends of the short chain so that it could be connected at the back of the neck.

Object 4 The Rainy Day earrings hang from the ear to the middle of the neck, the chain hanging 6.5cm from the earring hook. Attached to the chains are small polymer beads representing droplets of water. The Rainy Day earrings resembles rain by creating a waterfall affect with the beads attached to the chain using jump rings and eyepin attachments.

- Polymer clay will be used to create different types of beads, - Some bead designs included varying in shape, colour and pattern. spheres with a marble - The layering of the beads on the chain will replicate the features of pattern using a combination a body of water creating the effect of rain. of blue and white or light blue and dark blue, flat round beads using one colour and droplet shaped beads with the same patterns as the spheric beads.

Object 4 process

- The beads were added to a chain creating a layered effect. - This was done with materials including chains, jump rings and eye pins and tools including pliers and the oven to bake the polymer clay.

Object 5

Object 5 process - Made the rainbow out of metal to solve the problem of the original polymer clay pieces breaking. - Because of this I changed the design slightly to accommodate for the use of flat metal instead of polymer clay. -

- The original plan for this piece was to make it out of polymer clay.

The top tier of the rainbow was textured using a texture hammer then coloured using a pink permanent marker. The middle tier was textures using a centre punch and hammer then coloured using a purple permanent marker. The last and smallest tier of the rainbow was not textured but was made of copper that has blue plastic attached to it. Filing to make even and smooth to improve the quality of the piece.

In the unit I refined my skills of working with metal and polymer clay. I successfully achieved the intended purpose symbolising the theme of weather, sparked from climate change and the science behind it connecting to the target audience. Polymer clay proved more difficult to work with than metal as it was more fragile before and after baking often breaking. This informed the decision to make all of the pieces out of metal featuring elements of polymer clay.
