The client for this public display project is Moreton Bay College. The installation will be more closely directed to the female student of the college. The school requests the creation of a site-specific installation that responds to a school incentives that communicates the school values of engagement, character, care and teamwork or supports the five actions of the Hearts and Minds Framework. In response to the client brief I have:

□ Researched the elements of a public

installation - now understanding that the sculptures should respond to the environment it's displayed in and;

□ For this reason I have chosen to display my

installation [if possible] in the glass room on the second story of D Block.

How the work encapsulates the theme:

□ The purpose of this installation is to

encapsulate the MBC value of connection. This was done through the main depiction of a female form paired with the sculptural objects of organs; a heart, lungs etc.

□ The organ sculpture as well as the charcoal

portrait of a women represents the inherent connection shared between the student population as women.

an& pfmw Originally, the plan was to have the portrait be displayed in the centre of the room with the rest of the ornaments suspended around it. However, upon inspection of the room, it was decided that the room was too small to for this style of display. Installation Requirements: • String; to hand sculptural objects • Materials and tape to cover windows Decided to use a thick cardboard -like paper.

• The sculptures: Wire lungs & heart • The printed portrait collage

Windows would need to be backed out - perhaps with a type of dark fabric or thick paper.

□ D Block glass room

This public inst allat io n effectively attributes to the required criteria outlined within the client brief - the installat ion is sit e-speci fi c, and exemplifies the school incentive of connect, The value of 'connect ion 1 is shown through the vulnerable display of the human body through a variety of artistic media as well as disp laying the inherent connection each student shares with one another as members of the MBC community - this is presented though charcoal illustrat io ns of varying expressions and face structure, as well as the wire sculptures of organs, The video element (comprised of recorded light from within the installat io n space) project ed throughout the length of the room will prompt audiences to engage in the space - whether it be through walking through the light and seeing t heir shape projected on the charcoal portraits, or simply obstructing the lights reflection against the sculpt ures, Either way, the audience will find their own way to connect with the inst allat ion .

Black charcoal Large A- piece of paper As for tools used to draw with the charcoal, rather then drawing onto the paper dire ctly with the cha rcoal brick, Ifound dipping my fingers into the charcoal allowed me to sketch a smooth base figure that could be easily blended and added to throughout the drawing process. However, I would like to create and incorporate more charcoal sketches - perhaps a collage of differing figures illustrated wit h the s a me materials (charcoal) as to help emphasise the message of co nnect io n.

Drawn with cha rcoal on a large tapestry on white paper.

For this work, I plan to incorporate a prominent use of positive and negative space within the drawing - t his will be done by blacking out the background of the pie ce . This, paired with the lig ht ing creates the effect of a 3 dimensional object - this was explo re d during the experimentation process.

Digital Work:

• The plan was to edit together a collage of the po rt raits, however, there were issues when it came to printing it to the desired size. As well as this, the image didn't come together as seamlessly as desired. Materials:

Portraits Charcoal White A4 paper.

Digital e diting technology - MediBang Paint Pro

Revised Portrait Display Plan:

• So, the portraits were scanned onto a computer and scale d and printed to A3. Materials:

Exploring the idea of connection through the body and how that relates to people collectively. What I liked particularly about this idea's experiment was the detail that was displayed though the use of a hot glue gun. It gave a beautiful and intricate detail that was highlighted through light stimuli. This part icular technique will be reflected and explored in the final installation product. •

The technique of lining the wire with beads of hot glue was taken from the ini tial experiments surrounding the lung sculpture. It will give a beautiful and intricate detail that audiences will be inclined to pay att ention to.

Much like the wire lungs, the wire heart's purpose within this installation is to personify the value of 'connect ion' through the display of the internal human body, which is arguably a metaphor in itself on vulnerability. It in periods of vulnerability and openness when we are the most connected to both ourselves and our peers. These wire sculptures aim to appeal to and reflect that notion.

The sculpture of the heart, along with the lungs, would be placed in front of the port raits depict ing the array of black and white charcoal faces. This placement, paired with the video, would allow the sculpture to catch the light of the chosen video file - and furt hermore, this would double as a reflective element as the light passes through the glue of the sculpt ure.

flJ.,mtStatement The installation artwork I have designed and created reflects the aspect of connection within the hearts and minds frame work. This public installation effectively attributes to the required criteria outlined within the client brief - the installation is site-specific, needing to be installed and displayed within a dark environment, and exemplifies the school incentive of connect through the display if interconnected peoples through charcoal portraits. To create these portraits, rather then focus on the details of anatomy, I simply used tone to communicate light and shadow to illuminate the curves and textures of the human face. This structure of display encapsulates the inherent connection each student shares with one another as members of the MBC community.

Final Changes • We shifted t he sculptures closer to the port raits to enhance the effect the lighting would have on the glue. • When presenting the portraits in the collage, we ripped them apar t in order to mix together the feat ure s of the port raits. This further exemplifi ed the theme of connection.

Freesound - "Wandering" by Andrewkn Purpose of Audio:  Meditation audio is famously used for relaxing and connecting with one’s own body. This would allow audiences to fully immerse themselves within the environment of the installation. Purpose of Video:  This video was taken through the skylight of the glass room.  The soft swirling of the palm trees flowed beautifully with the organic nature of the charcoal portraits.
