Art as a Lens Matte D
Reflective Statement My focus for this folio was ready made objects, weather that be materials or themes within the responses. I explored these objects through the understanding of my key artists perspective and lens’s. I chose 4 artworks which show my understanding of lens, which was inspired by each of my three key artists. It shows my personal lens on certain things that the public would deem insignificant while using Samuel Tupou as my inspiration. It demonstrates my thinking of how his culture and experiences influence his Australian life, which resulting in my commenting on my Australian life in relation to my anxious feelings in public. I used my understanding of Australian culture and Key artist Marian Drew to demonstrate the perspective foreigners may face when presented with our culture as they rely on their preconceptions of animals, as their lens is different to ours.
Reflective Statement Continued I used my idea of beauty when experimenting with themes portrayed in Cindy Sherman’s works. I challenged the perspective of beauty by using a mannequin and removing its context with other, over-looked found objects such as a lamp to demonstrate physical appearance pales in comparison to creative and individual traits of others. I made sure to find a personal connection with each artist and experimental work by relating my thoughts and experiences to my waking life. I demonstrated my understanding of empathy when looking at how a person not from Australia would experience its cultural differences, while using a dead spider. I explained my idea of beauty after seeing how Cindy Sherman did, by using found objects which are overlooked, comparing them to what is deemed to be perfection by society, using the objects to remove the mannequins meaning, changing its personal lens to me.
