Focus – Inquiry phase 1 The focus of Inquiry Phase 1, ‘Is where we are where we are meant to be?’ explores the Idea of life and death. In this phase I expressed my feelings of grief for my Grandpa who passed away suddenly through a series of abstract artworks that responded to music that reminded me of him and my feelings about what happened to him.

Resolved work – IA2
Artist statement This collection of work explores the concept of self-reflection and awareness through art This body of work is self oriented and builds on previous works completed. IA1 reflected grief after the sudden loss of my Grandpa and the work in IA2 representing the life and memories of my Pop before he died. The focus of this work is on how I view the world around me, and who I am as a person, and a reflection on how I express love. I wanted to do for myself, what I had done for Grandpa and Pop and reflect on who I am and how I view the world and convey that in an artwork that expresses self love and my love of art. I have created this collection of works to remind myself and others of how important it is to know who you are and show yourself love.

“Head in the clouds” …cm x …cm Acrylic and Posca pens on canvas.
Abdul Abdullah works with art styles like painting, photography, video, installation and performance. His work “Half devil half child” was made with oil on linen. The image of the waves painted in the background on the piece looks so realistic and is an element of nature. The waves create movement within the piece moving the eye from the bottom of the work to the top where the sky is covered in clouds. He has layered a sketch of two arms, arm wrestling on top. This also creates movement directing the eye to follow the lines which outline the arms in the center of the work.
Half devil half child, 2019, oil on linen, 180cm x 240cm
Inspired by “Half devil half child” I created “Head in the clouds” and painted clouds in the background and layered on top a line drawing like Abdul’s. The line drawing is of myself to link to the focus of this inquiry phase. The clouds are closer together up the top of the work and further apart at the bottom to create movement in the piece. The line drawing of myself is the focal point of the work and the is in center of the piece creating movement, directing the eye to the bottom of the work with the strands of hair directed downward.
Supporting evidence “Human carnival”, 2019 Glass, collage, acrylic, resin 71” x 27” x 15.5 Dustin Yellin
“My coping mechanism” Acrylic on Perspex I used layers of Perspex to try and replicate this style of art. Dustin’s work shows a body made up of different colours and materials. The use of different materials creates texture within the piece and the use of different colours which change in diagonal lines creates movement within the work, directing the eye from the bottom of the sculptural piece to the top, following the direction of the colours.
Supporting evidence I chose a blue monochromatic scale to represent feelings of sadness. This also was used to take away the variation of colours you would see in a person’s face in real life. It represents the idea that if you feel bad and can’t find something that you like about yourself, if you change your perspective and see yourself as a combination of colours and shapes you can find the beauty in what you are looking at. Yourself. “Just Shapes and Colours” 2x (10.2cm x 10.2cm) canvases Acrylic paints ”Me in my natural habitat” (20cm x 20cm) Acrylic on canvas
“Marilyn Monroe 29” (92cm x 92cm) Screen print on paper Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol’s pop-art style inspired my use of bright and unnatural colours for my selfportraits. The bright colours draws the attention to aspects of the image and for this piece makes the hair, eyes, beauty spot and lips focal points of the work. The contrasting colours of blue and orange help to create movement within the artwork directing the eye from the lips to the eyes and from the eyes to the hair.
The monochromatic scale of pinks represents my personality as it is my favorite colour and makes me happy. It is also heavily associated with my school of 13 years, that has shaped who I am and is filled with people and memories I love, where my passion for art was discovered and encouraged.
Supporting evidence “What keeps me going” Posca pen on glass Olafur Elliason uses shadows and reflections in his work using light to create his art.
I tried to use this art medium with the terrarium using the outlines on women doing the things that I love in life with the light in the middle creating a shadow on the walls around of the images.
“Your uncertain shadow (colour)”, 2010 This work inspired my use of colours in my resolved work “Day light” and used my experimental photos of shadows and reflections as the framework of the series.
