Artist One: Cai Guo-Qiang The Transient Landscape (2019) • Contemporary context • The word transient means to last for only a short time and therefore temporary. (Dictionary.com, 2020) • Focus – Representation of Taoism and humankind’s relationship with the universe. (Xiao, 2019) • He manipulates people/objects using birds to convey his personal view on life and death also representing the afterlife (Cosic, 2019).


2019 Cai Guo-Qiang The Transit Landscape

• An installation in The National Gallery of Art Victoria • Using materials like Porcelain and Gunpowder. • Including historical culture and beliefs.


Artwork Two: The Terracotta Warriors • Cultural Context • The focus to serve and protect the first Chinese emperor in the afterlife, (Cartwright, 2017). • Qin Shi Huang had demanded the warriors be made to act as Guardians of Immortality. • Approximately 8 000 Warriors along with, 100 chariots, 400 horses and more than 100 000 weapons were made with the purpose to protect and serve for the first emperor Qin Shi Huang in the after life, . • Qin Shi Huang believed that the army would serve and protect him in his life after death.

Artist Three: Duccio di Buoninsegna • Cultural context • This piece was most likely the final scene of this back altarpiece, depicting Christ’s ministry, providing the climactic proof of Christ’s holiness, when he brings a man back from the dead. (Kimbell Art Museum, 2020) • He manipulates people to depict Christ bringing a man back to life after death. • Focus – In early fourteenth century Duccio was the preeminent Sienese painter, infusing the fundamental Byzantine style with a naturalistic, narrative mode of painting. (Kimbell Art Museum, 2020)


1310–1311 Duccio di Buoninsegna The Raising of Lazarus • A painting made in the 14th century using the medium Tempera and gold on panel. • The dimensions of this piece are 43.5cm x 46.4cm. • This piece is currently held in the Kimbell Art Museum.

My Experimentation in Response to Cai GuoQiang’s Practice


Reflective Statement • I made drawings, sculptures, video and audio footage through a contemporary lens. • I learnt how artists can manipulate people and objects to express personal viewpoints, cultural beliefs and ideas allowing the audience to understand these viewpoints, beliefs and ideas. • My contemporary approaches were digital technology and the use of objects and materials available in order to create appropriation pieces.
