FIA2 – The Extreme Wearable Art
Artist Statement ‘The Extreme’ wearable art project asked the student to create a collection of two wearable art pieces which can be worn and used for the cast of the school musical, ’The Wiz’. The gender neutral pieces must be constructed and able to be adjusted for different body types, styles and sizes. Initially, assistance from the artist/designer Claudia Williams was given to help in the first stages of the manipulation, planning and modification stages. The focus of my folio was a flared jacket and skirt. I explored materials and techniques in class. For my folio I did not chose to incorporate any of the experimental pieces although, I did use some of the techniques used in the experimental stage. Sketches and annotations were also a key aspect of the planning stages sparking ideas. The first garment I designed was a long jacket that flares near the hips of the subject and the second garment I designed was a skirt, structure previously made, while I added refinements and texture. My folio was influenced by contemporary artist, Claudia Williams who explores the ideas of passion and creativity. Claudia outlined that art can be simple and the use of repetition was particularly effective in making it look amazing while simple. In particular, the use elements and principles of art I was inspired by were repetition, form, texture and movement.
