FIA2 – The Extreme Wearable Art
Artist Statement “The Extreme” encompasses the creation of 2 wearable art pieces through the manipulation of mixed media, effectively expressing individuality for The Wiz musical. I explored a variety of avant-garde art perspectives and mediums, where the inquiry model guided my divergent process. The predominant green colour scheme was considered in the piece, where hints of purple and gold were included as focal elements. This was inspired by the Wizard of Oz’s Emerald city. This folio incorporates the thought and design process backing up both wearable pieces, where progress images and annotations provides insight into the journey taken to produce the final product. The first piece created is a corset styled bodice, inspired by Nick Cave, a contemporary avant-garde artist. Mixed media was layered to establish movement, repetition, unity, colour and texture, conforming with the elements and principles of art. This is exemplified in the piece through the coins and fringes, contributing to artistic techniques and theatrical extravagance. The second piece created was formed from a skull cap, which was manipulated into an ornate head piece decorated with various contrasting embellishments, in aim to resemble the Emerald City. This piece was also inspired by Nick Cave. Cave’s use of the principles and elements of arts sparked personal interest, where I reflected this in my piece. These elements include; colour, texture, form, balance, movement, and variety. This is exhibited in my piece through the manipulation of cardboard, wool, straws and fur trim by sticking and gluing.
