Year 7 Expressive Painting Artist Statements
Title: Artist:
The Blue Horse Franki G
Artist Statement This artwork is influenced by the expressionist artist Franz Marc. In my background I have a lot of little details from the background of his art pieces. My main Idea was to use the blue horse in my painting from the ‘Blue Horse’ artwork and then add in a blocked and detailed background. My goal was to make it a great artwork that symbolizes Franz Marc and his artworks. My thoughts of my painting now are very clear and that it really does look like it has been inspired by Franz Marc. My painting is based on the colours blue and green as you would be able to see when you look at it.

Tiger in the Meadow Hailey M
Artist Statement ‘Tiger in the Meadow’, is a calm and relaxing acrylic painting with a defined colour scheme. This painting was inspired by the many works of Franz Marc who was an expressionist artist. Like Marc I have tried to convey feelings in my painting. The main feeling that I have tried to show is a sense of calm which I think I have achieved by picking an analogous colour scheme that features calm colours, (Green.) A process that I went through when I made this artwork was firstly to block in colour and then by adding more detail over it. While creating this artwork I learnt that mixing colours together is not as easy as it looks.
Title: Artist:
The blue fox Alyssa K
Artist Statement ‘The blue fox’, I got inspiration from the hills and the trees with use of the bright colours and the fox made everything look good together because of the blue colour, like what Franz marc concluded in his painting. I used different colours for the landscape like a pink and a harsh blue for the fox, the tree is a light emerald colour with some dark green on top. The horizon is a deep orange mixed with a light yellow, and there is a gleam blue mixed with industrial white that creates a flowy texture for the ocean. For the grass it is a light green colour with hints of an inky green.
Title: Artist:
The Two Deer Aneira R
Artist Statement My artwork features two blue deer as the centre piece they are surrounded by blue trees that curl inwards with green leaves on top, while the deer also stand on green grass. The medium I used to create my artwork is acrylic paint. I used differently shaped brushed to apply the paint to my canvas, first transferring the two deer from a Franz Marc artwork, blocking in colour and then moving on to detail using complex colours and techniques like dry brushing. My artwork was inspired by the artist Franz Mark and his painting “Red Deer”. In my artwork I tried to convey a sense of safety and calm through my blue-green colour

pallet. Then, if you look closely enough the trees curl inwards making a kind of dome, cutting off the space from outside dangers.

Title: Artist:
Field of Tranquility Isobel M
Artist Statement “Field of Tranquility has an analogous colour scheme, filled with blues, greens and yellowygreens. It depicts a horse standing on a field with a blue sky behind that slowly becomes a darker blue. When painting this artwork, the original idea was to make the horse dark and brooding, it was difficult to find a background design and tone to match. I changed the colour scheme and emotion to depict a relaxed horse and tranquil scenery. Adopting this focus, the painting developed through the sky, ground and finally, the horse. This finished painting exceeded my original imagined product. Click here to watch the artist talk
This is my artwork it has two dogs looking at the tree. One of the dogs is blue and the second dog is brown with different shades of their colours and they are not mixed. The background has orange, yellow and red coloured mountains and the blue sky behind the dog has different colour blue to the tree and dog house on each of the other sides. When I created my artwork I knew exactly what I wanted to do so it was pretty easy to paint. The big idea behind my artwork is that I thought the two dogs were different to what everybody else was doing. My goals were to make it what I wanted it to be and it has turned out how I wanted it. Over-all I think that my artwork is great and has lots of different colours.
Title: Artist:
The Fox Lily B
Artist Statement My artwork is an acrylic painting inspired by Franz Marc’s works the yellow cow and blue-black fox. I used a small amount of dry brush technique for the clouds and multiple shades of blue for the other parts of the artwork including the mountains. I was hoping to convey a happy feeling by showing the clouds and the rising sun and the green grass which all of the above people usually associate with like mountains in which the fox was.
Title: Artist:
White in the Woods Holly D
Artist Statement This is my artwork that I have created, it is called white in the woods and it is inspired by the expressionist Franc Marc! A little bit about my artwork, I have been inspired by Marc’s artwork, “The White Bull”. I have taken the animal in the artwork and transferred it onto my canvas as well as adding a distinctive background and some unique features. Some of these features are the tree shaped background. I have included this because I wanted to give off the impression that the Bull is scared or frightened. Some elements that I have included are using different shapes of green at the top of my artwork to give it contrast and depth to really making it my own piece of work. Since I am not the most skilled artist, I needed to consider this when setting goals for myself during the painting process.
Some goals that I aimed for were to convey the emotional of the bull in my artwork as well as sticking to my colour scheme when painting. Some things that I could have worked on would be having a bit more of a range of painting techniques and styles when completing my work. Nevertheless, I am happy with the overall completion of my artwork, it was not completely how I imagined and planed it to be, but in saying this, I am pleased with how it turned out.
Title: Artist:
The Blue Dog Emma T
Artist Statement The painting of The Blue Bog is inspired by Franz Marc’s painting of the Lazy Dog. The Blue Dog has the same dog as Marc’s painting. The colour scheme of my painting is light blueish-greenish aqua, light, and dark green, and sunset pink. I put a sunset in the background to create a gist of night fall because the dog is sleeping. Also, in the background I painted mountains that are far in the distance. After I chose my inspiration, I sketched the outline of what I wanted to paint, then transferred it to my canvas. Franz Marc’s painting of the Lazy Dog inspired my painting of The Blue Dog.
Title: Artist:
Fun in the snow Alexandra M
Artist Statement My artwork was inspired by Franz Marc’s painting ‘Deer in the snow’. This artwork influenced me by the variety of colours. His artwork looked like two deer’s in the snow with a mountain behind them. In my painting, the white background contrasts well with the green, brown and yellow colour scheme. I used expressionism by putting the sunset in the back to show some lightness over the rocks, trees, snow, and the deer. The trees and green patches represent life and care. And the 2 deer represent their happiness and joy together.

The Purple Cow Leyla M

Title: Artist:
The purple cow Olivia S
Artist Statement The purple cow is a cheerful painting that is bright and has a meaning. I have used many different tools such as thick and thin painting brushes and tissues to smudge. My artwork suggests a meaning of freedom and happiness. The person who inspired me was Franz Marc, his yellow cow has inspired my purple cow. This piece has helped me reach my goals because I have experienced new techniques, colour’s and styles. This piece of artwork did not turn out how I expected but I am still happy that I have a worthy piece of art. This artwork has influenced how I will paint in the future because now I know how to paint clouds and shade in things and many more interesting techniques.
My artwork is a purple cow with a colourful background. In my painting the most obvious elements and principles include line, shape, and colour. In my artwork I used a dry brush technique. The artist who inspired my artwork was Franz Marc and his painting ‘The Yellow Cow’. The emotions I tried to show in my artwork was comfort and relaxation. When creating this artwork, I learnt there are many ways to make your artwork stand out rather than having random blobs of colour. My final piece was not what I imagined as I thought there would be more oranges, but I am happy with how it turned out. This piece will influence my future artworks by looking at the different techniques I used and improving them if I did another artwork.
Title: Artist:
Out of my Dreams Catelyn G
Artist Statement This artwork has some different features such as blue fading mountains in the background, an orange sunrise, and a sleeping dog. Out of my Dreams is about feeling left out or behind but I always try to look for the brighter side of things. I tried conveying this by using cooler and depressed colours towards the dog but have this beautiful sunrise with these bright happy colours. This painting was inspired by Franz marc who tried to use colour symbolization and painting animals to express how people were feeling. My artwork was made from acrylic paint, I tried to use a fading technique which I think worked for the mountains. I think this artwork portrays the imagery and meaning behind it as well as realism without being to abstract.
Title: Tiger Artist: Lani H
Artist Statement My artwork is an acrylic painting. This painting was inspired by the Franz Marc tiger artwork as I transferred the main animal which was a tiger onto my canvas. I created my artwork by using transfer paper to transfer Franz Marc’s tiger artwork. The main idea for my artwork is that it shows a tiger laying on long rocks with mountains, grass and trees. I have interpreted different colours of yellow, blue, purple, orange and green. For my background I have interpreted another artwork of Franz Marc which is the Yellow cow. I have done that by using transfer paper. The elements and principles I used in my artwork include lines and shapes. My goals for this artwork
were to make it like Franz Marc’s artwork but also interpret my own ideas into my artwork. I could improve on my animal by making it stand out more and add more detail, so it won’t blend into the background.

Title: Artist:
My artwork is inspired by one of Franz Marc’s paintings labelled ‘The Blue Fox’. My artwork uses a colour scheme consisting of a burnt orange, a dark purple and a grassy green. I knew when I chose these colours they would contrast well in my painting. As shown, I used the purple for my fox and the green and orange displayed in my background. I used these colours to communicate expressionism. The purple fox shows a lot of relaxation, asleep on the ground. The orange shows warmth and I found the green was more there to even out the colours.
The Red Deer Lihia T
Artist Statement This term we were asked to design an artwork inspired by German expressionist, Franz Marc. There were many varieties of paintings to choose from including the one I chose, The Red Deer. We were also asked to choose a specific colour scheme. (Tetradic). My painting is a mixture of light and dark colours, consisting of the colour’s orange, red, dark blue, and dark green. Each colour in the colour scheme plays a part in the artwork, Green for the bushes, Orange for the dirt path and mountains, Red for the mountains, and blue for the sky. I felt like the colours I selected would go perfectly with the theme/background of the painting, since
it was all nature based and because they are similar colours to the features in reality. I believe my artwork looks amazing just like the other girls’ too. Overall, I had a fun and great time painting! Hope you enjoy it :)
Title: Artist:
Mountain view Amy C
Artist Statement Mountain view is a panting piece featuring a couple of deer, with mountains in the background. I used my time to create detailed and thorough texture using a dry brush technique. I was inspired by Franz Marc and his amazing focus on texture. I chose to paint deer because I believe that they can be like some people; while quiet and shy, they can be amazing defenders and protective of each other. This makes them underrated and beautiful. I learnt how to mix colours and create the best type of texture when painting.
Title: Artist:
Dark Horses Willow P
Artist Statement The title of my artwork is Dark Horses, I have called it this because the horses are in a bad situation and cannot seem to find a way out. I used acrylic paint for this artwork. I was inspired by Franz Marc’s painting ‘Horses’. The overall ideas communicated in my artwork is how the darkness is all around the horse’s but they still emanate bright light to combat the dark. Title: Artist:
The Sleepy Cat Lauren B
Artist Statement My artwork shows a cat that is now asleep after playing with yarn all day in the hills. To create the cat, I used various shades of grey to make the actual cat. I used different shades of green for the hills. A medium blue and dark blue for the yarn, and for the sun I made a light yellow. One technique I used for my artwork is seen in the painting of the sky. I was inspired by Franz Marc’s painting of the white cat in a comfy bed. I was also inspired by my godmother’s cat, Nancy.
Title: Artist:
Dreaming dog Scarlett H
Artist Statement My artwork shows a dog that is sleeping on a mountain surrounded by nature. Life is continuing around him and he is calm and relaxed. I added vibrant and bright colours of orange and blue to bring emphasis to the dog because he is the focal point of the artwork. Different textures and ranges of shapes and sizes were incorporated to try and empathise the dog and what he is doing. The artwork by Franz Marc “Dog Lying in the Snow” inspired me and I referenced some of the background shapes in my artwork. The emotions I am trying to spark is stillness and calmness which emanates from the dog

Title: Artist:
Wish upon a star Iris B
Artist Statement This artwork is named Wish upon a star. During the process of creating this artwork I tried to use a dry brush painting technique to form the clouds in the sky; I also used a dot technique called stippling to create the stars. The emotions I portrayed in this artwork were peaceful and relaxing as the deer looks up to the stars and makes wishes. During creating this piece, I developed new skills like tracing around objects and making the artwork more abstract. My favourite feature of the artwork is deer because it is the focal point and makes the artwork stand out.
My painting was inspired by Franz Marc’s painting Blue wolf. My plan for the painting was changed a lot from when I started painting. Firstly, I felt my work was too plain with only the grass and the sky so, I added in a bunch of pink mountains that surround the creature. When I added in the mountains I decided not to add in the flowers from my plan, as I thought it would many the work too busy. Overall, I like the way my painting looks. If I was change my painting I would include less pink spikes in so I could put more plants in. Also, I should have stuck to the colour palette that I chose because I accidentally turned my red into pink. The emotion that I am trying to show is calmness and I think my painting does this successfully.
Title: Artist:
The Pizza Cow Isla C
Artist Statement The Pizza cow is an artwork inspired by (the Yellow Cow) 1911 by Franz Marc. I used greens purples and oranges, the green in the cow was meant to represent joy and freshness, the purple represents boldness and pride. We only used the three primary colours to mix all our colours. My plan changed a lot since the start, as I added a lot more elements as I went. If I were to do it again, I would maybe of not add the splotches in the background. I referred to some other Franz Marc’s artworks to inspire me when choosing the colours and other patterns.
Title: Artist:
Night Meadow Wajd E
Artist Statement This Artwork is called Night Meadow. It is based on a scene were the whole meadow is dark and sad. The cow tries to escape but he cannot. The longer he stays the sadder he gets. I used cool pastels combined with darker shaded to capture this emotion.
Title: Cornered Artist: Zara H
Artist Statement Cornered is an art piece inspired by the artist Franz Marc. It displays a tiger in the corner of the canvas with large tree surrounding it and tall mountains guarding the horizon. My artwork did not turn out the way that I had hoped it would because I started with too many dark tones instead of working from light to dark. Despite this, I think the work des show the emotion of being trapped in a dark place.
Title: Artist:
The Blue horse Mala M
Artist Statement Blue horse is a painting piece featuring a blue horse amongst the colourful hills and meadows. The medium I used for this artwork was acrylic paint, I used the bigger brushes to my advantage as I had quite a large canvas. My artwork is meant to represent the sadness amongst the joy, as it is quite common to feel down in happy moments. I want to let people know its ok to feel this way sometimes. My goal for this artwork originally was to use more yellow, purple, and blue colours, but it changed to more pink, purples and oranges. The artwork I was inspired by was Franz Marc and his blue horse painting. Going back to what my painting represents, I wanted the horse to be a light shade of blue with gradual darker shades to symbolize different stages of sadness, while the hills and sky behind it are more brighter pinks, yellow to symbolize the happiness surrounding the horse. The purple hills in the background represent challenges we may be facing. These are in the distance to show that in the end you will be able to put your worries behind you and carry on. My

overall feelings about this painting are good. I am proud of the blending and my ability to mix pints to create colours, tones and shades.
Title: Artist:
The journey to water Madison C
Artist Statement The journey to water is my painting of horses in a field with a sunset. My artwork represents the journey the horses took to find water. There is a brown dirt path symbolising the trials the horses faced to find the water. The sunset represents the long day coming to an end. My artwork was inspired from Red Horses by Franz Marc.
Title: Artist:
The Abstract Bird Mekayla O
Artist Statement My painting was inspired by Franz Marc. The animal that is featured in the painting is a colourful bird. I chose different shades of purple and blue to represent peace and calm, this was the background colours on my painting. I then chose red, orange and yellow for the bird on my painting to represent fear and terror. When I started my painting, I used transfer paper to make the bird look crisp and defined against the background. The techniques I used include blocking in, and I mixed colours on the canvas so that the colours are not completely mixed. This makes colour look less flat and more interesting and complex.
Title: Artist:
The majestic bird Charlotte A
Artist Statement My painting was inspired by Franz Marc. The animal that is featured in my painting is a colourful bird, with a forest as the background. In my painting I used lots of different colours of paints to resemble the animal I was inspired by. Some colours that I used on my canvas were, blues, reds, oranges, yellows, dark green and more. I used primary colours to create secondary then tertiary colours. In my painting, I also incorporated natural features such as clouds. For the clouds I used a dry brush technique that we learned in class, we were to get a very small amount of paint on our brush then paint in a circular motion to form light transparent clouds. Title: Stigma Artist: Tilly R
Artist Statement My artwork is meant to represents trying to escape the shame, dishonour, disgrace associated with making a mistake. This painting is inspired by The Red dear by the German Expressionist painter Franz Marc. Stigma is a painting of two deer surrounded by dangerous spikes and blobs which are coloured with different tones of purple. Purple tones that are used in this painting to give a mysterious and elegant effect with some darker undertones. The other colours that were used in this painting were different redtoned purples and blue-toned purple. The red-toned purple was used to show a feeling of danger, shame or anger to the viewer, and the blue-toned purples were used to show the viewer a sense of sadness or depression. Despite the deer’s isolation, at least they are together.

The Happy Deer Alexandra C
Artist Statement My painting features a pair of deer in a field of flowers. I used the dry brush technique to make my clouds look soft and fluffy against a blue background. I also used different pinks and purples to create a calming feel for the flowers. I used quite light or pastel colours to display happiness and joy.
