Year 9 Self Portrait Assemblage Sculpture Artist Statements

Self Portrait Sculpture Abbey J
Artist Statement This artwork is influenced by the expressionist artist Franz Marc. In my background I have a lot of little details from the background of his art pieces. My main Idea was to use the blue horse in my painting from the ‘Blue Horse’ artwork and then add in a blocked and detailed background. My goal was to make it a great artwork that symbolizes Franz Marc and his artworks. My thoughts of my painting now are very clear and that it really does look like it has been inspired by Franz Marc. My painting is based on the colours blue and green as you would be able to see when you look at it.

Artist Statement The so-called eyes of the artwork are covered with blue and yellow wire. I covered the eye to show that I try to hide my emotions, but I cannot hide most of them, so they shine through. The mouth is crossed out because there are times where I just need to stop talking. The colour yellow was used to represent my personality because it a positive and energetic colour. The blue was splattered around the head not only cause it looks good but also because no one can be happy all the time. I have decided not to attach the head to the body because my Mum always says that I would lose my head if it was not attached. In the head there is a photo of my family because I would not be who I am without my family supporting me. I was influenced by the DJ Marshmallow’s helmet, but I put my own twist on it.

Title: Artist:
Self Portrait Sculpture Abigayle Y
Artist Statement My subject matter is both sides of my life, the darkness when I feel alone and sad and the happiness that is expressed when I’m around people I love. The influence which helped me decide how to design my sculpture was the idea to represent everything happy in my life alongside the darkness. In considering this, one side of my artwork expresses the joy and clutter of my life, filled with different objects and photos which represent me in many ways, for example shells which are added all over my sculpture to represent my love of the beach. Elements of art were considered throughout the development for my sculpture such as shape and size, these were both used to represent the basic features of a human sculpture. Texture was used on the dark side of my artwork with wire, when the wire is touched its spikey, this element helps to represent the darkness of my life and how it’s not a side that wants to be reached in which represents the hardships of my life which include separated parents, feeling lonely all without being shown on my sculpture as the wire is added to hold that side in.

Artist Statement Colours are a big part of many people’s lives the paint colours that I have used in my artwork are a symbol of my connection to colours, dull colours are something I would not go for, the colours are bright and happy never in any order to symbolise how un-organised I normally am. The cellophane in red and yellow is meant to symbolise my fiery personality and how I can be very unpredictable. The pieces of cardboard are spread out to show that I do not lie about myself and if I do then people can usually see right through me. The original materials and the materials I used on the product were similar in some ways and also very different. The original materials were, paper, card, magazines, cardboard, feathers and a glue gun, the products materials were, coloured paints,
cellophane, cardboard/card and a glue gun, there are less materials however, I believe that the second set show a more colourful version of me.
Title: Artist:
Self Portrait Sculpture Charlotte S
Artist Statement My sculpture is representing me and the things that matter to me in my life. I decided to put the joyful things such as seashells and a wave at the back with clouds and a sun. I put some gold sequins on and different shapes and colours of shells and some paintings. I put a wave on my sculpture to show my love for the beach and how I go there, I put the shells on there as every time I go to the beach I end up collecting many shells which is kind of a hobby to me. The pineapple was for the food I enjoy eating and the two blue eyes (the evil eye) was meant to be for how weird and different my 2020 has been and need some good luck and to keep the evil spirits away.
Title: Artist:
Self Portrait Sculpture ‘Dance in Motion’ Ella F
Artist Statement During the making of this task, this quote helped with finding ways to relate the design back to my interests and passions. Dance has always been a huge part of my life, therefore, I felt as though it needed to be incorporated into my sculpture. For this self portrait task, I added different aspects of my life. For example, dance earrings, a family and friends necklace, flowers symbolise nature and paw prints symbolise dogs. Frida Khalo inspired me throughout this task, she incorporates her interests and likes through her art, to symbolise herself. Although my artwork isn’t as realistic as Khalos’, her art still assisted me whist creating. Elements and principles can also be seen in my sculpture, for example, texture was used by layering newspaper for the facial features for a 3D effect. Balance was used in the colour scheme.

Title: Artist:
My subject matter is sadness covered in happiness, as seen by the distressing words covered in pink flowers to hide my deeper, sensitive side. My vulnerability towards others brings the bright pink flowery personality to me. This relates heavily to Frida Kahlo with her meaningless symbols to her audience however the personal elements hidden in her artworks expresses her. The blindfold covered by the eyes represent the intention of not seeing life as other teenage girls, its overall ties to the mysterious design of myself sculpture. The word ‘happy’ written all over the head explains my confusing emotions of joyful thoughts to escalating sadness. Overall, my artwork produces the thought of various sides of me leading to the person I am today.
Self Portrait Sculpture Eloise M
Artist Statement My subject matter is order, the logicality and meaningfulness so that everything has a place within the artwork. I used materials that all have a significant meaning to me. The complicated zentangle pattern represents my spontaneity and chaotic side. The watercolour which covers the lower half of my sculpture represents my love of art and the colours representing my bright personality. The newspaper Paper Mache symbolises my love to read and knowledge which consumes me. The Lego on the head shows my extremely fixed and logical side, which is where my ideas come from, showing the tendril coming out of the head. I was inspired by Frida Khalo with her extreme symbolism within her artworks, which I replicated with every material having a meaning. Overall, the artwork has numerous symbolic elements to represent a self-portrait of myself in an expressionistic way.

Artist Statement I chose to use the phrase ‘see right through me’ as inspiration for my sculpture. It fits hand in hand with my passion for the human body. This artwork was crated to express my emotions, greatest fears and my inner passions. I used aluminium foil when creating the bust as it has great texture and tone. It also proved useful when expressing the idea that I am not perfect, and neither is this assemblage. I have used a clear plastic ball for the head as it’s a seamless shape that further supports the theme of ‘see right through me’ and the human body. The flowers ass a positive representation of the light that guides the way, helping to communicate my passion for religious studies. Even in the darkest times and darkest meanings, the brightest flowers lighten the tension and mood. This is a goal of mine in the future. I wish to spread happiness through families in difficult situations, using creativity and art as a volume. This artwork was additionally inspired by Penny Byrne’s glass armour sculpture as the wire armour represents toughness and strength compared to the fragility of the glass. The oxymoron of emotions was motivating and inspired me to create this meaningful assemblage of symbolic elements.

Beauty is not limited to visual appearance, but broadened to personal qualities, beliefs and actions. My artwork demonstrates the beautiful qualities I see in myself. When reflecting on my spiritual manifestation, beauty is my features I value most. I represented my open and curious mind through the unfurled head, revealing a brain. This directs the viewer to my intentions showing my open mind to learning and to our deeply-faceted world. Inside the head are symbols of important components in my life. The globe represents passion, displaying my dedication for bringing societal justice and caring for our environment. The barbell shows my love for fitness. I value caring, strengthening and challenging my body so being physically active is vital to my mental and physical wellbeing. The fork represents my culinary hobby. My mother and I love cooking so it has solidified our connection through flavours and hours spent together in the kitchen. I tremendously value the education I am fortunate to receive, warranting the inclusion of a pencil demonstrating this part of my life. Photos show my appreciation for my support network. I feel so advantaged to have parents that love me, a sister who is one of my best friends and buddies to share each moment with. Being an extroverted personality meant these people have aided me in managing the struggles of being human. A broad range of artistic principles have been upheld encouraging interest in my sculpture. Colour not only illustrates my love of bright hues but also draws viewers into my artwork. Form has obviously been utilised in my sculpture. Working with limited materials at home meant establishing form was difficult but remained a priority in development. Rendering the form of my head and body was challenging but essential to viewer interpretation meaning newspaper, tape, flour and water had to do. Although Frida Kahlo chose to use painting mode for portraiture, she always used symbolic techniques encouraging individual interpretation like my sculpture. Ah Xian has been referenced through the mode of creation. He chooses to produce portraiture through sculpture which is similar to my artwork, following this form factor.

Artist Statement In this Unit we were required to create a 3D sculpture to showcase our interest and personality. My artwork is made of soft colors, books and feathers with beads attached. I have used these materials to help portray my interest, and my personality. I have particularly used book pages in my artwork to represent my love for reading and expanding my knowledge. I have created facial features to further showcase a representation of myself. The feathers with beads have been used to create a dreamcatcher theme. I have used these to help showcase my love for sleeping and daydreaming. I have used both Frida Khalo and Ah Xian to help inspire my sculpture design. Both artists have helped me with my inspirations and ideas. Frida Khalo has helped me to showcase my loves and interest and Ah Xian has helped in the placement of my materials.
Title: Artist:
Self Portrait Sculpture Gabriella G
Artist Statement The reference artist for my sculpture is Joseph Cornell as objects from around my home were used to construct my self-portrait sculpture. The head of my self-portrait sculpture is painted light pink and is gradually blended to dark blue, expressing my favourite colours and personal aesthetic. I glued puzzle pieces, stamps and old Australian coins around the edge of the head as I have a coin and a stamp collection. The stamps are all Australian stamps as I have not travelled anywhere and have stayed in Australia. A tennis ball was placed inside the head as I like to play tennis. Placed next to the ball is sunglasses because the beach is my favourite place to go and I love spending time with there with my family and friends. I like maths and physics, which is why I decided to place a calculator in there too, along with a picture of a lightbulb which illustrates ideas and love of learning. The neck is covered
with photos of pink, purple and blue sunsets and shows my personal aesthetic. On the body is my SDA dance jumper as I spend hours a week dancing and I find it enjoyable and love performing. One of my medals is hung from the neck and brings back memories from the 11 years I have been dancing.

In our current unit we’ve been exploring sculpting through making busts that reflect ourselves. Mine has been designed with elements of artist Joseph Cornells design in mind. The bases stitching was created to give it a mashed appearance as if it’s been a combination of two worlds, which is how I often feel because of zoning out into a ‘fantasy world’. The pencils drawings and things are a reflective of my creative interests, which I treasure and feel are a part of me. I have a love of birds and technology, hence why I’ve included and am in the process of adding them both, to reflect some other interests. I’ve incorporated the disc because a life is practically a record playing, a brain is one that’s in the download process. Hence, the design choice. The colours were also chosen because they’re bright and colourful, which I feel matches my personality!
Self Portrait Sculpture Jayda M
Artist Statement The objective behind my self-portrait sculpture is expressing my personal traits through newspaper sculpting and painting. I used recyclable newspaper material and paper mâché to sculpt and shape my sculpture. By utilizing acrylic paint, I expressed my love for the ocean by painting suns, waves and dolphins. I strive to achieve happiness everyday and by being at the beach I feel zen, worrying about nothing but feeling accomplished. An artist that influenced me during the making of my task is Frida Khalo. All her artwork symbolises herself, in cooperating paintings of herself and interests. For example, her paintings contain jewellery, nature, her culture. Frida Khalo inspired my sculptures flower crown, consolidating a sun and jewellery. The shells, flower crown, dolphin tale and ribbon created 3D elements for the sculpture.

Artist Statement This assessment task required me to create a 3D bust and self-portrait using assemblage and found materials. My sculpture represents my interests, my friends and my family essentially everything that has made/makes me, me. I created a collage of pictures and memories that are important to me and represent me. My sculpture I used the materials that I had in the house which included PVA glue, cardboard, a balloon for the head and newspaper to paper mâché. I left the cardboard boxy shape and didn’t use paper mâché to make it rounder as I wanted to leave it ‘imperfect’ to demonstrate me essentially defying society’s beauty norms. The people that influenced my artwork are Frida Kahlo and Ah Xian.

Self Portrait Sculpture Kaya A
Artist Statement The creation of the sculpture is a mixture between reality, inspired by my personality and the key aspects of my life that represent me. As I began the creation of my sculpture, I drew on life experiences, memories and significant elements. My sculpture is based on many features, such as my love for the beach, outdoors, memories with family and friends, running and fashion. A bucket hat and bikini top represent fashion, the beach and outdoors. Shoes laces symbolise hair and the number of kilometres have I run in my like time, my love for running. The memories created with friends and family is captured within the sculpture as the ‘skin, lips and eye colour’ is presented through edited photography and image. During the creation process, I began by building a foundation through layers of paper maché and sticky tapping. The head was built by a balloon and to make the structure more solid, I wrapped the balloon in paper maché. The ‘hair’/shoelaces were attached to the sculpture with a hot glue gun, securing the attachment. I constructed the bikini top out of cardboard, paper mached the shapes and decorated using sequins, materials that related to the ocean. The straps of the tog top are plated rope, travelling over the shoulders and tying at the back. My influence for the conception of this artwork is Ah Xian. Xian inspired the construction of this artwork, as he creates sculptures in contact with reality but are also abstract. His works is a development of experiences and his journey, therefore, connecting my process of inspiration and creation with Ah Xian. Elements and Principle of art included are shape, as the structure of a sculpture is everything about shapes, keeping it free flowing and organic. Texture is another element, to allow audiences to see a variety of rough and smooth surfaces. The sculpture is 3D creating form.

Self Portrait Sculpture Lilah H
Artist Statement The intent behind this art piece is to display a ‘head in the clouds’ kind of idea. The painted clouds represent my separation from other peoples’ way of thinking, it also represents my desire to be left alone a lot of the time. The night sky represents my inability to sleep during the nighttime and also my fear of the dark or unknown. The animals floating around represent my daydreaming tendencies and how much easier it is to talk to animals that people. I chose to use paint for the clouds because I often paint clouds, I also used the paint as I have always used paint and enjoy using it. I chose the colour scheme as the light colours represent the daytime and the dark colours represent the nighttime, the night time acting as a ‘clouded mind’. For this artwork, I was inspired by Ah Xian, this is because in many of his works he doesn’t give the sculptures facial features or hair. I was also inspired by his use of painting to portray meaning, he often paints aspects of nature on his works.

Self Portrait Sculpture Lucia D
Artist Statement This sculpture is a representation of my personality and includes many gathered items inspired by the assemblage style. The paper mâché ‘shell’ is composed of piano sheet music which shows my passion and commitment to music and playing the piano. It also represents my love for learning new instruments as I’m a bit of an instrument dolphin. The medal around my neck and the swimming cap represent my dedication to swimming as the medal was the first competitive medal I won for swimming. The fingerprints on the door of the bottom compartment represent my friends and family and how I’m always loyal to them. The polar bear sitting on the platform represents my love for animals and the Lego person sitting in the head represents my childhood when I used to play Lego with my younger brother. The rubber duck and wrist band both represent my love for swimming
as the duck was a prize I got from training and the wrist band is a piano dedication one. The keychain is important because it says ‘love’ in my ‘first’ language.

This particular sculpture portrays different important events that have happened in my life. I have used many things from my childhood such as different toys, and tartans as well as some of my collections I have now including the pennies and collage of the head. It shows my interests in the present and the things that make me who I am. I used yellow tinsel to create a wavy effect and to draw attention to the face as the collage is the centre of the piece. The teabags are underneath to create contrast and base “book” also creates interest and shows different textures as there are 3 different textures; rough but soft, smooth and bumpy. Attached to the book are multiple objects to create a more 3D element and through doing this, it creates many layers and heights. My inspiration for this style of work was from Joseph Cornell who uses everyday objects in his work using many collections. Like him, I have used my collection of tartan, books, dogs, bookmarks and pencils to show my different interests growing up.

Artist Statement My sculpture contrasts between reality and my aspirations and dreams for the future. the choice of placing reality around the neck and shoulders and the very top of my head is symbolic of my physical body carrying reality and daily life. The incorporation of the collage of images represents my aspirations and dreams, specifically placed around the head symbolic of my thinking and looking to the future. The choice of ribbons, shells, pens and pencils, a shopping bag and fragments of a touch football are al representative of my reality and are materialistic to represent here and now. They provide a variety of real textures to increase the 3D component and movement as the eye is naturally drawn around the circumference of the sculpture. The choice of images being unmaterialistic, concentrates on the concept that it is not here yet but is something I will make materialistic and reality. The influence toward reality and the now is Frida Kahlo as she describes herself to have “Never painted dreams. I painted my own reality.”

Artist Statement My artwork reflects and symbolises myself now and my past, how I’ve grown mentally and physically. I use typically traditional elements and materials to help establish and create my 3D sculpture - brushes, clay and paint. All movements, techniques and objects within the sculpture symbolise me and the meaning behind is something different compared to everyone else, as everyone has their own story. During the time creating this artwork, I have realised you cannot go back and try and fix your mistakes. Instead as many well-known artists say ‘make those mistakes work into your art piece and create something new.’ I have included a photo frame/ box because it is close to my heart as it reminds me of my love for my family. The design of the head is going to be a volleyball as it represents my dedication and commitment to the sport and I’ve always wanted to go to CBU Volleyball in America.

Finding yourself is the most important thing you will ever do in your life, at least that’s what I think. I think that in the last few months I have found what is important to me and what isn’t. To me, self-expression and “being the best Phoebe I can be” has always been something my parents and family have told me. But I have always been left with the question How do I know if I am being me? This project was important to me because I felt it expressed me in the best way using the things, I love most instead of just trying to use my words. The visual elements that I have included in this artwork symbolise the little things that make me happy, sad and most importantly, ME! Polaroids, capturing a moment in a photo that can never be deleted is scary and real, but effortlessly beautiful. Photos and lyrics, I wanted to include a collage of pictures and text that could capture me in the best way possible. The artists Frida Kahlo and Ah Xian were big inspirations in the making and designing process of this art project. I love the way that Frida used flowers and nature to express her emotions and display her beauty in a simple but complex painting. Frida Kahlo’s use of flowers was beautiful, the way she matched the colours with her emotions and the aesthetic of the painting all together. I took inspiration from Ah Xian in his complex busts that he has created with beautiful blue china plate like patterns covering the bust. Each pattern was a different Chinese landscape, capturing the journey that Ah Xian has gone through to become the successful artist he is today.

Artist Statement My sculpture represents who I am and my passions. The cardboard has been used as a base to make the head. Multiple layers of cardboard have been stacked to make the shape. These layers of cardboard represent the layers of me, and the multiple personality traits and things to discover about me. For example, I am a runner, I love to move and do sport. To represent this part of me I have used the shoelaces to create hair, this can be thought of as a play on the fact that I am a runner-head. I have used the necklace with writing about things I treasure to show my values. I have added a pair of glasses onto the head to shout “outside”, outdoors was a major part of my childhood and influences the person I am. My artist influence is Frida Carlo, I use her because I think even if the art does not look beautiful in a general way it is representative and is insightful to who I am.
Title: Artist:
Self Portrait Sculpture Sam R
Artist Statement The representations in my artwork are the body of the guitar, used as my body as it is a beautiful instrument that is special within my family and has a special place in my heart, the broken DVDs are used as my eyes because I see the world in my own way and throughout the years I have been told I am wrong therefore my confidence and pride in my individuality has begun deteriorating, the lyrics of one of my original songs, pasted across my neck show my voice and my chosen form of expression and how I speak my truth. Rosalie Gascoigne’s use of words in her artworks inspired me to use lyrics from one of my original songs draws focus and interest to another form of expression I use. The use of wire on the head of the sculpture creates texture, adds a 3D element to my sculpture and drawing attention to the features on my head.

Artist Statement With colour, creativity, and hard work a master piece is created. I have made this sculpture in the hopes of showing my personality to the world the me no-one else gets to see except my family. I have used items from around the house to bring to life the sculpture. From the blue hair showing the love for my school house the my leadership as once a house captain. The colour and flowers show my love for art, creativity, being active and that I love nature. The bubbles bring out my bubbly side and hopefully make the viewers smile. And the photos of the things that I care deeply about and make me, me. Frida Kahlo, my god father and family are all influences who have helped unlock my creativity. I hope I can show just how funny, bubbly and kind I am.

Artist Statement Going outside is highly underrated. My selfportrait sculpture reflects my love for the outside, family, friends, animals, the beach, sport and everything nature. My life revolves around sport, whenever I’m not playing sport I’m catching up with friends or family. Shells, drawings, flowers, photos are some of the materials used to portray my interests and hobbies. The influence of my self-portrait is Frida Khalo because she includes a lot of the outside world through her creations. She also has a big connection with animals which is very similar to me and I wanted to incorporate to my sculpture. The fake flowers used to make are flower crown are there to make a 3D element. One day I want to go travelling and see the world and its beauty, I can do this through a netball career because we will play all around the world against other teams.

The subject matter for my sculpture is my personality and the things that make me happy. It is in an assemblage theme, inspired by Joseph Cornell as it is made from objects aroundthe-house such as a painted polystyrene head, a tissue-box and bubble-wrap shoulders inside an old shirt. The objects inside the head reveal aspects of my personality, like a toy airplane, car and Eiffel Tower, for my adoration of travelling, a spike key to show my dedication to running, a snipped plant for my love of houseplants, and a cooking spoon representing an activity I like to do. Also, in the head is a miniature canoe and paddle, an activity I do with my family, two plastic dogs for my affection for animals and a shopping bag, another of my passions, as well as a small book made out of cardboard, representing my love of reading. The head and shoulders are painted blue as it is my favourite colour and the face also has a horse silhouette as horse-riding is a big part of my life. I decorated the top of the head with shells that I found from trips to the beach, adding texture and another 3D element to the work.

Artist Statement This Terms sculpture is meant to represent who I am today, some of the materials I used are significant to my life as it makes me who I am. For Example I have Used Old Computer keys to represent Gaming as myself and my siblings’ bond over gaming, I have painted them sunset color to for my love of photography, It represents photography because the first photo I took was of a sunset on water. I Then continued to rip pages out of an old book and soak them in coffee to create a rustic old aged paper I did this because I love to read and write. From That I removed flowers from old flower crowns I got and took the lights out of them so I can use the lights to light up the crate and the flowers are for the face. I’m putting them on the face because from a young age I lived on farms and the flowers are meant to show nature as there was a lot of bushland.

Artist Statement A variety of assemblage and personality statements have been used to reflect my interests, loves and outlook on life in this piece. I used a variety of techniques in the creation of my sculpture to capture movement in the artwork. The incorporation of paper mache and drip paint was used to enhance movement in the piece, and the headpiece reflective of my love of nature represents me. The 3D aspect of the headpiece causes the eye to dash between different elements of the sculpture. These elements enhance fluidity and movement in the sculpture which I love to create. I made this art because it is reflective of my me- the colours representing my creativity and fun personality, and the neat design of the original bust represents my perfectionism and attention to detail. The headpiece represents my passions- my love of nature. The pencils surrounding the bust represent my passion for drawing, and the necklace represents my crazy, fun personality. This style artwork was inspired by Frida Kahlo- who created multiple pieces reflective of her personality with the use of surrealism and assemblage.

Artist Statement This art task we have been designated to do is a sculpture representing who I am as a person and what my desires are in life. I have to include things that link to my personality, so adding objects that will be able to represent me. For example, I love all things shiny; so to represent that I am adding diamond earrings as the eyes. To express my love for makeup I will be adding fake eyelashes and detailed beauty features. I will then resolve to adding raffia as the hair as it shows how I care for nature. Lastly, I will be adding USB cords for the earrings so I can represent my alike for technology and all things to do with the internet. All these things represent who I am, as to why I’m including them in my sculpture. The artist influence that will be taken is Marcel Duchamp.
