Year 7 Metamorphic Sculpture Artist Statements

Title: Artist:

Aquatic Wonders Hailey M

Artist Statement Aquatic Wonders is a sculpture moulded out of clay. This piece of work has been inspired by Courtney Mattison and her artwork showing sea life. Underneath all the texture and detail the base has been made out of two pinch pots. These have been joined by scoring and applying slip to create this form. The most challenging part of the process was getting the two pinch pots to stick together, this was because both of the pots were round which meant I had to try and adapt their forms so they could be attached to each other. From this unit I leant what was the easiest way to attach things and how to create complex texture.

Boat Attack Aneira R

Artist Statement Boat Attack features upturned boat being attacked by a deadly Kraken on top of a sheet of water. The only material I used was clay. My inspiration for this piece was the kraken or large octopus. I wanted to capture the moment when a boat is pulled down into the water. The most challenging part of my piece would be creating the boat as it wasn’t a shape I’ve ever made before and I ended up needing help. Another challenge was creating a realistic water like texture. Through this process I learnt that clay cracks if you wear it too thin or let it dry out, making it a tricky substance to work with.

Title: Artist:

Sea madness Leyla M

Artist Statement Sea madness is a clay art piece based underwater things. I was inspired by Courtney Mattison and her underwater sculptures. I was also inspired by Jenny Orchard’s imaginative process of making hybrids and unusual creatures. I chose to create leaves around my clay work as they give off a peaceful vibe. The seaweed shows how much it can cover valuable sea objects. When I had spare space on my sculpture it was challenging thinking of what to add as my design. I learnt to think outside the box and just let my creativity lead my decisions.

Title: Artist:

Under The Sea Holly I

Artist Statement Under The Sea is a clay artwork with under the sea themed things on it, such as shells, octopuses, barnacles, fish scales, sand texture and kelp. They objects that inspired me are from the ocean floor, and the artist that inspired me was Cortney Matison. The challenging part about the process was probably making the seashells, moulding the pinch pot, and making some of the fish scales. Another challenging part of making my clay pinch pot was actually making it, as I had fractured my wrist and was had to mould with my injury. I learnt a few things in this unit, such as the easiest way to shape and mould clay, how to make a pinch pot, and how to make a texture tile.

Title: Artist:

Snail Kingdom Addison F

Artist Statement I have made a kingdom for snails and different creatures to stay. I used clay, water , and tools to shape things. To make the edges rough I used a fork, tooth pick, paddle pop stick and knife. I added snails and water snake going in and out of the pot. I learned that I should have spent more time on my draft to plan my ideas more carefully. I was inspired by Courtney Mattison because her artworks are always ocean themed and she used really soft pastel colours. The most challenging part was when my sculpture dried out and fell apart. I had to try and come up with a way to use what had happed and combined it into my artwork. This was a good test of my creativity and resilience.

Title: Artist:

Computer Sea Zoe H

Artist Statement This is my sculpture. I went with the online theme, and thought of a computer at the minute I decided on my theme. I started off with two slabs which later turned into a cube, which then went to a huge hole at the bottom. I needed one more slab to do the decorations, (Sea leaves, buttons) and was a great help since I always got the shape I wanted with all my attempts. The sculpting part was a bit hard though. I found it was almost impossible to get the right shape. But, other than that it turned out great anyway.

Title: Artist:

Coral Reef Alyssa K

Artist Statement Coral reef is a clay art piece which features coral among the rocks, with fish eggs surrounding the sides. I used my time to create a detailed and thorough texture for my sculpture. I was inspired by Courtney Mattison a ceramic sculpture who designs sea life. She inspired me to do the sea worms as well as the little crab holes on the sides of the rock. Some challenges I faced whilst creating the sculpture was when some coral kept falling off. Also, when I was making the sea worms come out of the crab holes they kept becoming smaller. I solved some of thes problems by using a to fix my shapes and joins. During this process, I learnt how to create scales with a popsicle stick and how to make pinch pots and join the them to create a rock-like feature. Also, I learnt how to make a clam that has a pearl and coral which covers the rest of the rock. Title: Artist:

Octopus Garden Rock Kristy C

Artist Statement I have made an art clay piece. My piece was inspired by octopuses, clay pinch pots, rocks and fish scales. The materials and tools I used included clay, a toothpick and a popsicle stick. I found making the pinch pots a challenging because they either turned out too big or too small. I also found making additive fish scale pattern a challenge because this sometimes turned out too chunky. I learnt that pinch pots are hard to make with long nails and that it is super important to scratch and slip to connect pieces of clay, so they stay connected.

Title: Artist:

Turtle Shell Lauren B

Artist Statement Turtle shell is a clay art piece featuring a turtle that has a candle holder in the shell. I used my time to create it with detail and decoration. The artist that inspired me was Courtney Mattison and her sea life work which she made from clay. I was also inspired by turtles, shells and the beach. The challenging part of the process for me was making the flippers tail and head because they kept breaking off and I had to make them again.

Title: Artist:

Star Fish Economy Scarlett H

Artist Statement I have created a star fish. The star fish that holds sea culture within its 6 legs. There are mini starfishes and creatures that the star fish cares for. The things that inspired me was simply ocean and earth, giving me so many great ideas and patterns that I included. Some of the challenges that I faced were that some of the ideas that I had in my head were hard to make out of clay. That is alright because I made modifications to my plans and made them better. I learnt some different clay techniques and different ways to use tools.

Title: Artist:

Floating Shell Iris B

Artist Statement This term, I made a clay piece, I used many tools to make different patterns. Courtney Mattison inspired me because her artworks are inspired by the beauty of coral reefs. Courtney makes artworks to raise awareness for cleaning our oceans. So, I made a turtle as my main piece of clay to advocate for the ocean. It was challenging to make the clay pieces to place inside the shell, as the clay had cracks in it and would not work well. I learnt more about time management and I also learnt how to work with clay and create patterns and designs.

Title: Artist:

Under The Sea Alexandra C

Artist Statement My clay features many textures representing the sea and sea life. I have made the top wavy to look like the water and a clam shell. I made the outside look like there was some seaweed stuck on it. On the outside there are also some pots that look like some of the coral and sea life stuck to the rocks.

Title: Artist:

Sea pot Zara H

Artist Statement Sea pot is a clay sculpture inspired by the sea. It shows a large pot with other smaller pots coming off it, with seaweed coming out of them. To create the main pot, I used a coil technique. Then for the smaller pots I did a pinch pot.

Title: Artist:

Sea urchin Isla C

Artist Statement Sea Urchin is a clay art piece that is inspired by the ocean. I used different designs by texture tile to add more texture to my pot. I was inspired by some of Courtney Mattison’s work as she incorporates the ocean into her artworks in many ways. The hardest part was attaching the things on the outside as they were quite heavy and fell off whenever I wrapped my clay piece up overnight. I eventually attached them all after lots of scoring and slipping. I added the fish eggs in the bowl to add more texture and make it more exciting.
