Unit 1 Art as Lens Project - Experimental Folio
Artist Statement
The focus for the folio was on people, places, and objects, creating each artwork with the context of “art as lens”. I investigated different inspirations for my artworks keeping in mind the lens in which each artwork was conveyed by. Within this folio, there are multiple artworks which reflect the main focus and context, these are all further explored through supporting evidence which was gathered over a matter of weeks. Through creating a range of two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork with lots of different media, I have aimed to represent my personal viewpoint of “art as lens”. When compiling my folio, I kept in mind the influence of the different artists I had explored throughout the unit, this helped me to create different artworks which relate to people, places, and objects. I explored artists such as Marin Creed; who introduced me to readymade art, and I resonated with the fact that he said “art exhibitions should be like a long theatre show”. I created all my artworks to tell a story and represent something from the context they were created. This idea further supports the main context of how we create and view art with a lens. All of the artworks presented are all associated through “art as lens” and concentrate on people, places, and objects.
Folio of Experiment Works
When creating this the graphite was used to create different tones and shades, this was achieved by the differing amounts of pressure added to the page.
Material used: graphite stick Size: 11.6cm X 10.2cm Context: Viewfinder
Through using a paper collage the artwork now is 3D and has multiple aspects which make it look more eyecatching. Material used: paper collage Size: 11.6cm X 10.2cm Context: Viewfinder
Folio of Experiment Works
Context: ready made artwork Materials: wired ear phones, recycled coke can, lit candle Size: 47.5cm height
I have elevated the can to show how the big corporations value themselves and profit over people as well as the fact that the corporations are above the law.
Folio of Experiment Works
Context: Readymade Art Materials: Cardboard (recycled toilet rolls)
The photo is taken from a below angle, this accentuates the height of the structure and makes it look tall and grand. This represents that you should never underestimate what you see at first. It also shows that smaller things are able to help and support bigger things, you just have to have belief.
Folio of Experiment Works
Context: soundscape artwork Material: acrylic paint, paper Size: 21cm X 29.5cm Song: Last day on Earth, Green Day
This artwork is about overcoming the darkness to find the things and people you love.

Context: soundscape artwork Material: graphite stick, paper Size: 21cm X 29.5cm Song: Snowcone, Rei Ami
The overall message this artwork is conveying is the story that the person is telling and their mixed emotions throughout.
Supporting Evidence
These artworks are examples of experiments carried out. The first artwork is a representation of objects, the second is of people and the final shows places. Each of these is a topic from the current unit.
This is a accurate representation of my development of the people, places and things theme. I have chosen artworks that all have a connection to each sub-section of the context of the assignment
Supporting Evidence
These artworks helped me explore the contexts of people and places – allowed me to connect with the focus topic
The basis for this artwork, is three pages from a calendar in 2011. The calendar was bought in Italy and shows pictures of different places in Italy. I took this as my inspiration and made the main focus on aspects about Italy. After adding pictures, paint, glitter and a map of Italy, I finally I took black paint and painted the phrase "il buon giorno si vede dal mattino" this is an Italian phrase and translates to a good day starts in the morning.
Before making a response to "people", I completed some research on the way I should be creating my response. I looked at previous sculptures made my Italian artists, this was in following to my places response in which had a focus on Italian culture, and different aspects of that. Therefore, I wanted to create something off that Italian influence. However, I decided to stem away from 2D artwork and wanted to create a 3D artwork using a different material, this material was white, airdrying clay.
Supporting Evidence This shows the link of different artistic elements and principles used in each artwork. It also shows the connection of people to each artwork – and how the perception of basic people can be manipulated by elements of art. I have taken the topic of people from the main art topic and applied it to these artworks
Supporting Evidence
These pages from my art book show the investigation of different contexts. This introduced me to different techniques of making art and lead me to try out these new techniques within my experiments.
