FIA3 ART AS CODE EMMA FOLEY DATE: 20/8/20
Artist Statement My 3D abstract landscape responds to Jacqueline Scorcher’s inspiring landscapes of place and belonging depicted in her artworks. My resolved work contains series of 2 key landscapes I encountered and experienced meaningful with, the first being a nearby stream in rural Numulgi, New South Wales, and the second piece of prospective nature in my back garden combined in an abstract painting. The landscape figures collaged together using various road signs communicated the meaning of human imprint with nature as Australian 'explorers’ we engage with the land's geological location and historical experience. The idea of ‘Text’ was central in rearranging road signs encountered during exploring each landscape which was applied through formal code. The materials chosen included using dark paints of red, orange, and blues contrasting the sunburnt landscape to the deep blue oceans was painted using harsh pallet knife strokes and, blue impasto paint, which aimed to further express my perspectives and experiences of code within the landscape through linking with personal identity. Through abstracting 2 landscapes, I was able to identify the importance between nature and culture through capturing and engaging with nature's natural and aesthetic features that convey 'sense' and scenery.
