The High Street may be changing how it looks from what we might have seen a few years ago, but it hasn’t lost its sense of community. Celebrate the town centre with Our Bury St Edmunds

July is a busy month in Bury St Edmunds town centre. As the school holidays get underway, we have the Motorsport East event but the month starts with a celebration of the unique independent businesses that make ‘shopping local’ a real treat. And there’s no better day to support those shops than Our Bury St ‘Independents’EdmundsDay’ on the fourth of July. For the 12th year running the day – also American Independence Day – will kick off a week-long promotion in which many of the town’s nearly 300 independent businesses will be joining in with special deals and offers. Full details of all those with special deals can be found on the Our Bury St Edmunds website and the town’s LoyalFree app.

Part of the fun of Independents’ Week are the characters who come along to celebrate with local businesses. This year ‘Abraham Lincoln’ will spend the day browsing the indie shops as a special lookalike character joins the Mayor and Town Crier to get the celebrations underway. The Our Bury St Edmunds events also give an opportunity for visitors to enjoy our town centre amenities. The next one is Motorsport East on Sunday July 24. It’s been curated by well-known local rallycross commentator and motorsport

journalist Arthur Debenham and the special guest is Laura Cooledge – a Women in Motorsport Ambassador.

Motorsport East will feature around 65 competition vehicles with one of the highlights being former rallycross driver Brian Betteridge’s rare Ford Escort RS 1700T. The Cornhill and Buttermarket will be transformed into a celebration of cars and motorsports and, as with all Our Bury St Edmunds events, there’s something for all the family. In addition to the sport vehicles and cherished collectors’ cars on show budding Lewis Hamiltons can test their skills in a racing car simulator which will be in Charter Square. For those who prefer a slower pace, bumper cars and other fairground rides will be on offer too. The family attractions at arc shopping centre will be free of Admissioncharge.toMotorsport East

This month, my report will be a little less text heavy so I can show you some pictures of the amazing celebrations which we had as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. On 2nd June, the whole country marked the Queen’s accession to the throne with over 3000 official (and many more unofficial) beacons being simultaneously lit. Over the next few days, there were far too many events to list, as I attended civic events, ceremonies, music events, the sunset parade and perhaps my favourite of all, the Kembold street party with good friends in Moreton Hall. More is planned throughout the year, including tree planting.

Alongside our jubilee, we also welcomed a delegation from our twinned town, Compiegne, in June. Our friends from France spent the bank holiday weekend with us, visiting local attractions & staying with Bury families. This is the first time since alterations to the mayoralty that we have been able to exchange with Compiegne, largely due to Covid restrictions on travel and much has changed. Moreton Hall WI We are a friendly group and prospective members are always welcome.

Helen showed us how she creates limited edition prints taking her inspiration from the East Anglian countryside before we went on to ‘have a go’ ourselves. Some members designed their lino cuts whilst others used Helen’s designs and by the end of the evening, we had managed to create a variety of cards and bookmarks to take home. It was a fabulous evening and a fitting to start to the Jubilee bank holiday.

Moreton Hall WI meets at 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of the month at Moreton Hall Community Centre. At out July meeting our speakers, David and Jane Corby, will be telling us about ‘Life on the Strictly Circuit’. We don’t have a formal meeting in August but will be going on an outing.

One of my happiest childhood memories is messing about in the woods with my younger brother. Getting muddy, collecting leaves to make a collage, building a den. There is something wonderful about the freedom running around a wood – woodlands have a magical mythical quality; woods are places where children and adults have a real sense of being free. With the increasing pressure on the household budget, and the six weeks of the long summer holiday looming on the horizon, Green Light Trust has put together our guide on to how get the most out of your time in the woods with the kids. Den building is a fantastic activity which all the family can get involved with. A den makes a great place for birdwatching, or it can serve as basecamp for woodland walks. Woods are home to some very shy animals and fragile plants so if you are in ancient woodland, please leave the den building to the native residents. Challenge everyone to gather sticks and natural materials such as leaves which have fallen to the woodland floor. Never break off materials from living plants and trees. You might be tempted to use bracken for the roof covering but this is best avoided as bracken can be the home to ticks. Once you have collected all the raw materials let the imagination run riot. From a simple structure of sticks laid upright against a tree to a tipi –don’t forget to collect dry leaves to act as carpet and make your den extra cosy.

It is with regret I am writing this article. I usually take it in turns with Cliff Hind our Chair. Cliff passed away in May. He had been battling a number of health conditions. Cliff was a Bury Town Councillor for Moreton Hall between 2011 and 2015. He had been Chair of MHRA since 2015 and was actively involved in the work of the association. He was also Chair of the Friends of Moyses Hall Museum and involved with the Friends of Kevelaer. He was a great believer in residents associations from his time living in London and will be greatly missed by the association.

The public consultation on the West Suffolk local Plan Preferred Options is open from 26th May till the 26th July. Rougham Airfield for employment uses and residential. There were a series of posts recently about this on the MHV Facebook page with varying views expressed. If this area is developed for housing and employment uses then there will be a large built-up area to the east of the town going up to Sow Lane and the boundary with Mid Suffolk. Is this right after all the development Moreton Hall has undergone since the 1970s?

When I was out and about I used to think I was in the way of other people and I would drive around Bury St Edmunds repeatedly saying sorry every time I saw someone close to me. This is normal to feel this way. People are very patient, in the years I have been in a wheelchair, only two women were ‘unkind’ to me. They were in the wrong.

Being in a wheelchair is not the ending of your life as you know it, it is the start of a new life which can be just as much fun as you want. Try and learn something new, something with your hands, if that is not possible, look at yourself and find that inner you. You need to find something that interests you, something that will while away the hours. Remember you only get out of life, what you put in.

The cancer unit at West Suffolk Hospital care not only for their patients but they also support their loved ones too. We hear regularly how staff have been amazing while families are going through one of the most difficult times imaginable and donations of thanks are truly wonderful to help them continue as they go above and beyond.

One such donation came from the Logistica Masonic Lodge who are based in Newmarket. Sadly, their member Peter Brown passed away and his wife Jill and the Masonic members wanted to say thank you for all the care shown to Peter and his family. They held a fish and chip supper, which was the first events they’d held since the pandemic started, and members generously donated resulting in a gift of £500 to the cancer unit which will make a fantastic difference.

The Regatta was initiated nine years ago as a fun event to coincide and celebrate Antigua Sailing Week, one of the most prestigious international sailing events in the Caribbean. Through a Google news alert, the SESCA Regatta came to the attention of the Sailing Week Race Committee and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, who were so impressed with the initiative that they offered to come onboard as sponsors. With the Tourism Authority’s support, the Regatta has become the highlight of SESCA’s racing and social calendar.

Next year’s Antigua Sailing Week will be held from 29th April to 5th May, with SESCA’s 10th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta to be scheduled again in early June.

With a westerly breeze, the race officer set a figure of eight course making full use the lake. This proved challenging for the racers and interesting for the spectators, as there were some long upwind legs with dramatic Twowindshifts.raceswere held before a barbecue lunch accompanied by calypso music from an authentic steel pan band provided by the Tourism Authority, which really added to the occasion. A punch and wide variety of Caribbean inspired cakes, baked by members, also contributed to the festivities. However, with all that is currently going on with energy price hikes and crazy increases in cost of living, now seems like the right time. In the midst, of all the storms we are all facing now, I would encourage you to turn to prayer. God is not sleeping, and He is in your boat. He is aware of all the things we are facing and longs to help. However, while the storms may not be stilled immediately, He will work to bring them to an end. In the meantime, He will give us the strength and peace of mind and, yes, even the joy and love, to face them as we should.

As somebody who grew up in Lowestoft, I know that even when a storm is over it takes a long time for the seas to settle down. While Jesus did turn the storm to

calm in one go. In the storms of life, like the sea there will be some big waves before the end.

Bury St Edmunds at night is a busy place as people from around the area come to the pubs, bars, restaurants and night clubs to enjoy themselves with friends, often until the early hours. Everyone involved in the night time economy - the bar staff, security staff, CCTV operators, taxi drivers, the emergency services - works hard to ensure that everyone who has a night out has a great time and, at the end of the night, gets home safely. However, things do not always go according to plan, especially if friends become separated and people can get into difficulties late at night. The police do a great job making sure that everyone is kept safe at these times, but they cannot be everywhere at once, especially at busy times on a Friday or Saturday evening.

on Friday and Saturday nights from 10am until 4 am wearing distinctive High Vis coats and navy blue caps/ hats. The Town Pastors seek to be a positive presence on the streets, available to offer support to vulnerable people and de-escalate potential trouble. They are able to offer assistance to those who are feeling the effects of having consumed large quantities of alcohol and to help people to find a way to get home safely. They are very well known for giving out bottled water, the small Freddo chocolate bars, foil

blankets and they also carry mobile phone chargers.

In 2007, a group of people representing local churches, came together and Bury Town Pastors was established. Since 2008 the Town Pastors have been keeping watch over the bars and clubs area of the town
