What happens to people experiencing homelessness after the festive period is over?
Many of us celebrated Christmas with friends and family. Here at the drop in, we served a home cooked meal of turkey with all the trimmings on Christmas eve, with the generosity of the Buckingham Emergency Food Appeal.
The response to our winter donations appeal has been generous; receiving donations from churches, local businesses, and individuals. But what happens after the festive period is over. Public concern naturally occurs when the weather is cold, and people are thinking about Christmas goodwill. However, homelessness doesn’t just happen once a year. In the summer, periods of hot weather affect people
sleeping on the street increasing their risk of developing heatrelated illnesses.
In the last year, we have been providing vital services to 150+ guests, with around 40-50 people attending a typical session. With the right intervention, homelessness can be effectively addressed. Acting as a first point for agencies including the West Suffolk Council rough sleeper service and NHS Health Outreach, we provide emergency provisions, support and services. Imagine moving into temporary accommodation without a bed and mattress, a fridge to store fresh food
and no means of cooking. By donating regularly to Bury Drop In, you can make a difference, supporting people experiencing homelessness across West Suffolk 365 days of the year, for as long as it takes for them to rebuild their lives.

Home Is Where the Heart Is:
Valentine’s Day Ideas for a night in
Plan a global cuisine night.
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to mean extravagant outings –some of the most memorable celebrations happen at home. Whether you’re planning a cosy night with your partner, friends, or even a solo celebration, these unique ideas are sure to make February 14th unforgettable.
CREATE A DIY SPA EXPERIENCE
Transform your home into a haven of relaxation. Light candles, play soothing music, and set up a spa day with face masks, massage oils, and luxurious bath bombs. You can even make your own scrubs or bath salts for a personal touch.
1 2 3 4
HOST A THEMED MOVIE MARATHON
Pick a theme – classic romance, quirky comedies, or even nostalgic childhood favourites. Set up your living room for a cosy movie night. Add blankets, popcorn, and a menu of themed snacks to elevate the experience.
PLAN A GLOBAL CUISINE NIGHT
Bring the world to your kitchen by preparing a meal inspired by a different country. Cook an Italian pasta feast, make sushi together, or try your hand at French pastries. Add decorations and music to match the theme for extra flair.
DIY WINE OR CHOCOLATE TASTING
Turn your living room into a tasting room. Buy a selection of wines or chocolates and create tasting cards with notes on flavour and origin. Pair them with cheeses, fruits, or nuts for an extra touch.
A GAMES NIGHT WITH A ROMANTIC TWIST
Break out board games, card games, or trivia, but add a Valentine’s spin. Create custom questions about your relationship, play "Would You Rather," or try a couples’/ friends quiz to spark some fun and meaningful conversations.
HAVE A VIRTUAL TRAVEL ADVENTURE
5 5 6 7 8
CREATE ART TOGETHER
Unleash your creativity with a home art session. Try painting, drawing, or even making collages. If you’re up for something lighthearted, take turns drawing each other’s portraits – it’s guaranteed to bring laughter!
Missing the thrill of travel? Plan a virtual getaway by exploring a destination online. Watch travel vlogs, cook local dishes, and learn a few phrases in the language. It’s a fun way to plan for future adventures.
MAKE PERSONALISED GIFTS FOR EACH OTHER
Instead of shop-bought gifts, take the time to create something meaningful. Write love letters, craft photo collages, or design coupons for experiences like a homemade dinner or a massage.
DANCE LIKE NO ONES WATCHING
Turn up the music and have a dance party at home. Whether you prefer slow dancing under dimmed lights or rocking out to upbeat tunes, or going through your favourite oldies but goodies – it’s a playful bit of fun.
Sometimes, the simplest moments are the most meaningful. With a little effort and some creativity, you can turn Valentine’s Day at home into a celebration that’s unique, lots of fun and one to remember.
Host a Valentine’s wine tasting evening, just for two or a group of friends.
SOUTHGATE
Spring will soon be shining bright, and we can look forward to some fantastic events blossoming on the horizon.
One of the most anticipated happenings is the annual May Community Fun Day on the Hardwick Primary School playing field. This has been a top date for diaries since 2014. Organised by the Southgate Community Partnership in conjunction with Southgate Church and the School this fantastic community event will be on Bank Holiday Monday May 5th, kicking off with the hugely popular Year1/2 interschool football tournament.
Our amazing supportive local Councillors Patrick
Chung and Sarah Stamp have pledged to fund the activities from their Locality Fundsso the inflatables, rodeo bull, bouncy castles and the Abbeycroft Leisure Explore Outdoors climbing wall will be FREE for families to enjoy.
The footfall is huge so you could do very well. Contact us if you would like to join us on the day.
We offer the facility to local groups and charities to have a stall on the field for the day - also to local businesses.
So save this date and look forward to a great day in May.

Moreton Hall WI
Despite it being a bitterly cold evening, it was lovely to see so many members at our January meeting. There was lots to catch up on after the Christmas period and we all enjoyed the social time. Once the business of the meeting
was completed, we turned our attention to discussing the shortlisted resolutions for 2025.
Unfortunately, our speaker had to cancel at short notice, so the President showed everyone how to
access the WI Learning Hub ,which is an online resource, free to WI members, offering talks and courses on a variety of subjects. After refreshments and more chatting members enjoyed a ‘snowman drive’.
Moreton Hall WI meet at the Moreton Hall Community Centre on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. Visitors are always welcome. For more information contact Alison on 07557 005343 or Gwen on 07768 175235.
Ready, Steady, Grow Your Dough!
My WiSH Charity’s Grow Your Dough is back for 2025 and we are looking for teams to sign up and join us as we see who can ‘rise’ to the challenge of this imaginative event.
Last year Grow Your Dough raised more than £31,000, which helped us provide an activity coordinator for elderly patients, many of whom live with dementia.
Gemma, who is now working on G4, is making a remarkable impact on both patients and staff every day.
So, this year we are asking teams what service they want to support.
Each team will receive a £50 starter donation, thanks to our sponsors, Knights Lowe, and will have three months to prove themselves as the ultimate Grow Your Dough champions!
Find out more about My WiSH Charity at
Fundraising officer, Tanya Fifield, is the event organiser and said: “Our teams were just brilliant last year. They found so many innovative ways to raise money. Clarkes of Walsham based their fundraising around game shows such as Bargain Hunt, Great British Bake Off and The Big Fat Quiz of the Year. Quality Eats in Moreton Hall held a host of fundraisers including a quiz night and the Bury Town FC bar staff took on the challenge of walking 14 miles.”
Tanya continued: “Grow Your Dough is an event where people come together and get creative and have fun, all while supporting their local NHS charity and the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.”
The event will run from 1st April to 30th June and entry is free. Teams can be businesses, schools, family and friends or it can even be an individual challenge. There will be four trophies up for grabs; Most dough raised, community engagement, most creative fundraising and most dedicated team.
Tanya added: “This event couldn’t take place without the support of Knights Lowe. We can’t thank them enough for supporting us for a second year. We know they were as thrilled as we were with the teams imaginations and with the final result.”
Kirk Vaughan, director at Knights Lowe, said: “2024 saw the launch of the brand new ‘Grow Your Dough’ event and thanks to its overwhelming success, we are delighted to sponsor it again for 2025!
“Knights Lowe is proud to support this event and excited to see the creativity and fun GROW even more this year and help raise funds for such a worthwhile charity. Let the enjoyment and imagination begin!”
This year teams can choose exactly where they would like to support. This could mean they fundraise for our WiSH Upon A Star Children’s Appeal, our WiSHing Well Appeal which enhances adult care, or maybe they want to choose a specific ward such as the stroke unit or the Macmillan cancer unit. The choice is theirs, what they raise is open to how creative they can be but the difference they make will be huge.
What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School
By Zara Cowling, Head of School & Andy Abbott, Governor & FoHPS Chairman
Another New Year and as we march forward into 2025 the Friends of Hardwick Primary School (FoHPS) are already planning their fund-raising initiatives for the Spring term and beyond.
The tireless FoHPS are parents and Governors that devote their time volunteering, organising exciting events to raise valuable monies that support pupils throughout the school and across the year groups. Without these funds that pay for costly coach hire and support theatre trip, residentials and educational resources much of this would be prohibitive too expensive for many children and families.
So just look at the fun the whole school, children, staff and parents and carers had in December with the FoHPS Sponsored Santa Run, another event planned to be inclusive of our whole Hardwick family.
Look out this term for Penny Wars, Wear What You Like Day, Wonka Bars and their Golden Tickets and of course the ever popular Easter Bingo. The FoHPS are always desperate for new volunteers so if you want to help ask at the Office and they will put you in touch with a committee member.

Any break in the skin can make it more likely to get an infection there. Lymphoedema can cause your skin to become dry and itchy, making cracks and breaks more likely, increasing the risk of infection but this can usually be prevented by moisturising often.

A SAFE PLACE…
A support group is a safe place where you can talk about your emotions and experiences with others who know how you feel and won’t judge or criticise you. It can also help you to learn better coping strategies as living in pain can be challenging and you don’t always know from day to day how you are going to feel. You may feel nervous at first joining in the activities however over time you may feel confident to contribute your own ideas that may help you to get more out of it. CPSG is a friendly group and meetings are relaxed and informal with speaker presentations, refreshments and socialising. A favourable format which over the years has become more familiar making for a comfortable atmosphere. Speakers bring a refreshing look on pain or non-pain related topics. Interesting enough to captivate their audience and giving a talking point over coffee and homemade cake. Come and give us a look and enjoy being enveloped in the warmth of friendship and belonging.
Time for Tea was designed and crafted by a group member who has taken to crafting in a big way in the comfort of her own home having learnt skills in the crafty sessions with added support from on-line tutorials. A passionate supporter of the group and a keen advocate. Members find no matter what craft we do its such an uplift, it’s amazing what meeting up with friends and doing something takes the edge off all pain for a while and makes them smile . Crafting is just one way to help you manage your pain. Distraction can be a powerful tool diverting your attention away to becoming totally immersed in what you are doing. Although it may become difficult, it can be a useful and healthy way to cope. Crafty sessions are always fun and light hearted, however absorbing they are there is always time for banter and a laugh. Members look forward to coming to sessions and always go home with a smile on their face having enjoyed the time out. Many crafts have been achieved over the years however there are always new ones to learn so if you have a craft you would like to share with us, please get in touch.

LATEST NEWS
Welcome to February edition, lots going on with the Moreton Hall Residents Association. Unfortunately our last meeting was postponed due to ill health but still working behind the scenes.
Raising issues with decision-makers
We have been busy asking for meetings with Suffolk County Council, West Suffolk Council and our MP about issues which you have been raising. We have got meetings on topics such as:
• HGV usage around the estate including mass influx from Suffolk Business Park
• Parking on Skyliner Way and surrounding areas
• The proposed splash fountain at Flying Fortress Park.
Barton Road consultation survey report
Thank you once again to everyone who shared their thoughts on the Barton Road proposals. We have now produced a report which has been shared with the council and our councillors. A copy of the report can be found on our website.
MHRA survey for residents
We want to make sure that the work we do is based on your priorities. So we are working on a survey which should be available online and in paper form in the coming weeks. Look out on Moreton Hall Voice Facebook page for more updates.
May 2025 County Council elections
Suffolk County Council have asked the Government if they can postpone the county council election to focus on plans around devolution (this would likely see the combining of West Suffolk Council and Suffolk County Council). If the Government accepts this request then we will be pushing to make sure Moreton Hall residents are still being properly represented and listened to.
As chairman, I am happy to raise any points from residents raised at the meetings and with local councilllors. But you can also direct any questions you may have to your local councillors:

Craft Corner
Welcome to my crafty column! Every month I share a crafty activity for you to try at home. Check out my facebook page for more info www.facebook.com/thecraftyfoxes or visit www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk
This months’ craft uses old plastic spoons by re-loving them into these adorable lady bird love bugs. Perfect to gift to a loved one or place in plant pots indoors or out.
You will need plastic spoons, paint pens (red and black), hot glue gun.
Take two plastic spoons and colour them solid red. Make sure to colour the top and bottom of the spoon.
Take out another spoon and colour the scoop part front and back with black. Allow the paint to dry for 10 minutes on all the spoons before going on to the details.
Cut off the bottom handle part of the spoons so all you have left is the red-coloured part.
Start drawing the spots onto the ladybug wings with your black paint pen.
Take another spoon and cut it into a smaller size circle. This will be the head of the ladybug. Colour this piece black and left some small white dots for the eyes.
Use the extra parts of the spoon and cut tiny strips to create the antennas. Colour them black as well.
TOP TIP…
Try making bumble bees out of spoons too. Or butterflies. They would look super cute nestled in a plant pot.

THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF DATA CENTRES
This month I thought it may be interesting to look at the greenhouse gas emissions in data centres ie. the environmental impact of cloud computing. We are all aware of the explosion of computing systems and gadgets feeding from and to vast data centres, but there is little discussion of the effect this has on climate breakdown. The overall energy use by data centres worldwide is thought to be between 1% and 2% of the entire world’s energy usage and by definition is producing vast amounts of greenhouse gases. This is having a significant effect but currently nowhere near the level coming from transport, clothing or the beef and dairy industries.
Between them, data centres around the world consumed around 460 terawatthours (TWh*) of electricity in 2022, but according to their calculations, by 2026 they could be consuming more than 1,000 TWh, an amount roughly equivalent to the electricity consumption of Japan. To give you an idea how big that number is, you would need 2.35 billion standard solar panels to generate that much electricity.
Some of the largest data centres are owned by the largest companies in the world and they are having varying levels of success when it comes to reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions:
Google is nowhere near meeting its goal of net-zero emissions by 2030. Compared to its baseline year of 2019, emissions have soared by 48%. Google blamed the jump on AI and the demand it puts on data centres, which require massive amounts of electricity.
Amazon on the other hand is investing in purpose-built chips like the AWS Graviton3 — an energy-efficient Armbased machine learning chip that uses up to 60% less energy for the same performance than comparable Amazon EC2 chips
They are also seeking lower-carbon concrete options for constructing data centres and other buildings, and finally they are designing efficient, low-carbon data centres (including servers and hardware).
Microsoft is betting on an effort to generate power from atomic fusion to help reduce it’s greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, it is funding a futuristic geothermal power plant in the northern Nevada desert that harnesses heat from deep underground. The latter is also a low carbon energy source and together with atomic energy could help reduce the overall effect of Microsoft data centres on climate breakdown.
National impacts
US data centres consumed about 200 TWh of electricity in 2022 — approx. 4% of all U.S. electricity demand, but by 2030 consumption could rise to 8% (with a fifth of that demand coming from AI).
Ireland - by 2026 they predict almost one-third of Ireland’s electricity demand will come from data centres.
Denmark alone will make up 20% of the expected increase in data centre electricity demand in Europe by 2026.
These are frightening statistics but as shown by Amazon and Microsoft there are many projects coming into operation to help reduce the overall emission of greenhouse gases generated by data centres.
Here are a few more ideas that could help reduce energy consumption in the future:
Data centres are evolving towards more sustainable and efficient operations, including transitioning to Hyperscale Data Centres, which can run large-scale operations without a significant increase in electricity consumption.
Quantum computers which can deliver more and faster processing power than supercomputers while consuming less energy (although they also need to be cooled to near absolute zero).
Power generation is currently the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the world, but it is also the sector leading the transition to decarbonisation through the rapid expansion of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. China is forging ahead with this technology and on a scale unparalleled by any other country. If the rest of the world adopts a similar philosophy then we can make significant change to help keep the future temperature increase to a reasonable level.

Are you in a Liminal place?
Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church
I love learning what new words mean, and trying to use them successfully.
I found myself listening to several podcasts on our way home from Cumbria, and Rob Brydon ‘s guest used this word ‘Liminal’ when she described the time her daughter had been investigated for a type of cancer, which may or may not be curable. I could have used this word when I wrote my last article about my dog if I had known it.
In the New Year we are often in a time where we do not know what 2025 will bring, but we may have made decisions that will affect our future. I don’t really make New Years resolutions any more, as it means something else to put pressure on achieving even more in the
coming months. I do like to make subtle changes that become part of my routine, that way no one is judging me or adding any pressure to completing things.
In February we are focusing on ‘building the church of tomorrow: A community with a shared purpose’, and on the 16th February we look at Acts 1 Verses 1-8.
Both of these can quite easily bring this word Liminal into use. A time of transition, where we don’t know what is ahead, but we are putting plans in place. As Jesus explains to his apostles after he has died, and they have to stay in Jerusalem, and what the Father has promised. The apostles are keen to know how long they will be waiting, but Jesus says it will be up to the Father. So, they are in
Liminal. They have been told what will happen, but they will have to wait, and it may be a very long wait.
I know we are excited to initiate new things at Christ Church, one of which is to encourage families to come along, and have a more interactive experience. Families could then begin subtly adding a Church Service to their schedule. They may still feel they are in a liminal place, but when they continue to repeat their visits and make it a habit, before they know it, Christ Church will become part of their lives.
The First Sunday each month is going to bring changes which should help those new to faith; and with January’s First service already behind us, I can feel some great times ahead.

February Update…
Storm Eowyn is blowing through as I write this BUT the great news we open on March the 30th. Only NINE weeks. The first Sunday is the day after the clocks change – officially SUMMER time. I hope that the winter so far has been kind to you all.
I’m going to reiterate the comments from Chair Graham as it really reflects how well the museum is doing and how your fantastic support keeps growing. He writes in our RCTAM Newsletter:
Wow what a year! May I start by thanking all the Committee and volunteers for their hard work and dedication to the Museum throughout these past twelve months.
The British summer time was nothing to write home about but it didn’t stop the public coming in droves! Last year we had 3,000 visitors – this year up to and including the December Departures, we have had 4,574. Included in the total are 35 individual visits from 94th and 322nd veteran’s families.
The Museum is currently closed for much needed maintenance of the buildings and displays.
We re-open on Sunday 30th March 2025. 10.00 - 16.00.
One of the stand out visits was from John Jameson who delivered a door sign that their father, Lt John Jameson 410th Squadron, had liberated from the 410 Briefing Room in 1945. It will now take its rightful ‘pride of place’ within the collection.
December Departures was a fabulous success, even with the storm trying to disrupt the proceedings. The RAF Mildenhall Colour Party did the USAF proud with their attendance, over 50 visitors braved the wind and rain to take part.
Maintenance work will again carry on over the winter closed season, we have plenty of smaller projects going on so when you all return in 2025
there will be more to see, read and study.
We look forward to Opening Day on March 30th 2025.
Thank you Graham
The final event of last year was on December 24th, Christmas Eve, which saw a wreath laying ceremony at the Memorial ,in memory of Brigadier General F. W. Castle. He and his crew lost their lives on Mission 760 in the skies above Liege, Belgium, in 1944. He was the Base Commander who led from the front. Details of his personal story can be found within our displays.
Again, thank you for your continuing support, the committee and volunteers really appreciate your visits, especially when you join us for tea, coffee and cake. (YES, remember the Cake!!)
See you again next month in March, here in The Directory.

The Two Saviours!
In the bible, Jesus is described as ‘Saviour of the World’. But this year there’s a new ‘saviour’ in town - Donald Trump. A man who also seems to have risen from the dead, if only politically. But I wonder which saviour you would put your faith in..?
Over the years, Mr Trump has upset many people, and can be very controversial in the statements he makes.
In stark contrast to DT, God’s saviour came to make peace. Peace between us and God. On the cross, Jesus took upon himself the sin of every person who ever lived. And then he took the punishment that should have been ours by dying in your place and in mine. So that now, when you put your faith in him you can be forgiven completely and make your peace with God.
This is the good news of Jesus Christ!
Since the election in November, America’s new saviour has boasted of his wealth and power. During the election campaign he said “I am worth $8 billion” (Forbes say that he’s worth half that!). But Mr Trump’s message seems to be: “I am rich and successful, so put your faith in me”.
By contrast, God chose a poor couple to raise Jesus, and so he grew up amongst very ordinary people. This was God’s plan all along, because he wants normal people to look at Jesus and to see what God is really like.
Unlike ‘Our Saviour Donald’, Jesus Christ didn’t surround himself with the rich and the powerful. However, from the time of his birth, Jesus was innately powerful. And so ordinary people
were drawn to him. When they met Jesus, he often changed their lives. Which still happens even today.
We’re still in the first month of Donald Trump’s presidency and so it will be interesting to see if he does change people’s lives. However, I wonder if the world will still remember him in 2000 years’ time? It’s unlikely, isn’t it? But I do know that 2000 years after his birth, people still remember the coming of Jesus Christ. The Saviour who came to make peace between us and God. The Saviour who spent his life showing ordinary people what God is like. The Saviour who changed the lives of everyone he met and still does.

FAITH IN ACTION
For over 30 years Southgate Church has financially supported Faith in Action (FIA) in its work with some of the poorest people in the world, predominantly in the East African country of Malawi. And we have also sent out people in the past.
FIA supports the ministry of local churches there by:
• Supplying Christian resources in local languages;
• Ministering in a municipal rubbish dump and prisons;
• Ministering to elderly women;
• Providing resources to help local communities to help themselves;
• Providing wells and boreholes for fresh water;
• Training farmers in rain conservation;
• Providing a variety of more flood and drought resistant crops;
• Supporting orphans.
Recently FIA has sent £20k to drill boreholes in three villages; £4k for urgent medical treatment for named people; and £1500 to print 1200 A3 sheets of Bible verses in Chiichewa for 40 families in 300 churches – to replace bibles swept away in the floods.
If you would like to know more about FIA UK, please get in touch.

THE 19TH HOLE
BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH
Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching
Welcome back to the 19th hole, January has been a cold start to the new year. However, the first month of the year is done and we are one step closer to spring. As golfer we know what that means… we are one month closer to seeing Augusta National in all its glory.
That being said we still have plenty of time to action our goals and plans for your golf game this year.
If you have set some goals for your game this year the one piece of advice I would give you is make them achievable, it would be great to have to reset them a numbers of times throughout the year rather than never achieve them.
As always at this time of year though the professional tours around the world roll on and we have plenty of great viewing this month.
COACHES CORNER – READY… STEADY… GO!
This month we are looking at movements that can help you begin your swing and how these can also help you commit to hitting better golf shots. These small movements or feelings can help you make a more committed and have smoother movements. They can also help if you find yourself stood over the ball for a long time, these will allow you to pull the trigger and hit the shot sooner and with less tension.
Look at the image of the golfer holding a bucket in this section,
if this bucket was full of water some of us would struggle to move this into a back swing position. However, with a small trigger movement forward this motion becomes easier and we would be able to move the bucket further and smoother.
This can be the same in your golf game, from putting to full swings a small movement or feeling that allows you to get your swing motion started a lot smoother.
This could be a push of the hands forward, a bounce or
Here are two examples from the world’s best players
movement of the club head whatever works for you to get your golf swing moving at the same point in your routine.
