Welcome to the August issue

The Summer holidays are here! My children are older now, but I remember the days of trying to keep them occupied for weeks on end! It can be a struggle.

Luckily, throughout the summer holidays, there are so many fun activities available for children in Bury St Edmunds, but we were interested to hear about one right on your doorstep at Moreton Hall library.

Reading Quest is a new summer reading programme, open to children of all ages and reading abilities. Every week during the summer holidays, their staff and volunteers will be on hand to chat to children about the activities completed and the exciting books they’ve read. While visiting the library, children can collect a weekly reward and a new stack of books to enjoy at home. Sign up at Moreton Hall library to take part!

A new production of ‘Dorothy, Back in Oz’ takes place at Theatre Royal from 16th – 31st August following the success of last year’s ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’. Well worth a visit if you have time, we’re lucky to have such a wonderful theatre. Find out more at theatreroyal.org

We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care, and we’ll see you in September!

Bury Bach Choir

There is nothing to beat the experience of singing with a big choir and the Bury Bach Choir has 80-100 active singing members who don’t just sing Bach! Our 2024-5 season will also include works by Gustav and Imogen Holst, Gabriel Fauré, Mozart and Antonio Salieri.

The choir has three main concerts each year which are usually held either at The Apex or at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, together with a smaller Christmas concert at the Church of St Peter & St Paul in Lavenham.

Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings for 2 hours from 7.30 - 9.30pm

“Come & meet us”

at King Edward VI School in Spring Lane. Experience is not necessary and the choir is happy to support new and returning singers. There are currently some vacancies in all voices.

More information is available on the choir website: www.burybachchoir.co.uk or Instagram, Facebook and X @BuryBachChoir

The choir is also holding two “come and meet us” sessions at the Oddfellows Hall, 85 Whiting St, IP33 1NX for potential singers to meet a few members of the choir to talk about what they sing, ask questions and see whether they could be the right choir for you.

Good Vibes, Music, Fun & Friendship...

...is a music–based social group for adults with learning disabilities. It meets regularly in Southgate Community Centre and we are delighted to support its work. This summer the group have partnered with The Hal Company and West Suffolk College to devise a play with music – ‘The Land of Good Will’ which has been rehearsed at the Centre.

Danuisia Iwaszko from The Hal Company works with

marginalised groups; giving them confidence and a voice, and putting them back into the centre of society. Danuisa has been helping the Good Vibes Group over the past couple of months to devise this play; using their own ideas and talents. The whole Good Vibes group is involved in some way, and the play has helped group members to gain new confidence and skills, as well as have a lot of fun!

We hope you will come to watch the play on Friday 20 August at Conservatoire East Theatre at West Suffolk College, @ 1.45pm. and enjoy and celebrate the talent of this celebrated playwright Danusia Iaszko and of The Good Vibes group members.

Help us make a difference

Despite the rain, summer events have certainly been happening over the past couple of months.

We’ve had fun days, skydives, marathons and long-distance walks; raffles, trade fairs, lots of wonderful bake sales and even a tractor run. Our first Grow Your Dough event has been a huge success with over 30 teams taking part, but more about that next month.

As always, we can’t thank our supporters enough. The time and dedication they give is second to none and the donations they have raised are just incredible and will make a huge difference to the whole community.

If you fancy getting involved then give us a shout. Fundraising is a great way to give back as well as tick those challenges off your bucket list.

My WiSH Charity is your local NHS charity and by supporting local you can direct the money to where you wish to make a difference. We support all ages and aspects of health care so if you, or a loved one, has been cared for then let us know and you could be saying thank you and helping your family and friends should they need the support of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust in the future.

Moreton Hall WI

We welcomed ten visitors to our July meeting to hear our speaker, Amanda Sutherland, deliver her third presentation to us.

Her talk was entitled ‘Reuse, Recreate and Re Style Your Wardrobe’. Amanda started by showing us how to reassemble knitwear to make new items before moving on to restyle a jacket – using an old shirt to add length and interest.

Whilst this seemed rather ambitious for some of us, Amanda then demonstrated how to redesign a man’s shirt into a stylish apron, which was very achievable even for those with limited sewing skills.

As always, Amanda’s creativity and enthusiasm made her an entertaining speaker and there were many quizzical looks and gasps as she explained how she turned leggings and trousers into tops.

During refreshments members enjoyed browsing the items for sale which she bought with her and offered at reduced prices.

Whilst in a car or sitting in direct sunlight do ensure that the affected limb is covered.

It’s best to avoid extreme temperatures as too much heat can increase swelling of the affected limb(s) rooms and don’t sit too close to heat sources such as bar-b-ques and outdoor heaters.

Using a cooling spray, iced water in a spray bottle works well, on your compression garment can help cool the affected limb and yourself.

Incidentally, if you sit out on concrete or by a whitewashed wall – the sun’s rays also reflect off these.

Ultraviolet rays are invisible and are present in every season, so sun protection isn’t something that you should reserve for a summer beach day.

COCKFIELD SUMMER FAIR

Cockfield Summer Fair was an enjoyable family fun afternoon with several activities and games held in the display arena, as well as a dog show, a brass band, a tug of war, stalls of homemade crafts, plants, charitable causes. A BBQ, ice creams, slush puppies and homemade cakes and drinks. Tombola and a raffle.

CPSG had a stall raising funds and promoting the group. A big thank you to all who supported the group and to all the on-site help on the day. A successful day for all involved.

Calling all adults…..with or without children!

By the time you read this the children will be well into their summer holidays. They will already be thinking about extracurricular activities they would like to get involved with in September. We, as leaders with Girlguiding, will be getting enquiries about joining Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers.

This term 3rd Bury Rainbows have hosted a sports evening which the girls planned and ran themselves. They will finish the term with a campfire. Risby Brownies were planning pond dipping at Lackford Lakes. Both 2nd Bury and 1st Moreton Hall Brownies have enjoyed an evening at Bradfield Park Scout Campsite zooming down the hill on their Cresta Run. A highlight for 1st Moreton Hall was delivering the proceeds of their

fundraising event to Gee Gee’s Ranch and Rescue. The Brownies (and some parents and siblings) had a great evening with the animals. The Guides, including our recently reopened 14th Bury unit, have been very active with cookouts, (sausages AND marshmallows!), new skills and much more. 10th Bury have already had their camp, where they coped well with some rain, but still managed to earn their Backwoods Cooking badge and watch beautiful skies and a barn owl flying around their camp.

And then there was the division trip to Hautbois Activity Centre! Four coaches full of Guides and Brownies left Bury, Mildenhall and Elmswell and the girls enjoyed a whole day of activities at the Girlguiding Anglia centre in Norfolk. They

climbed higher, moved faster, paddled further and, in some cases, got wetter than ever before! Girls are starting conversations with, “Next time we go…”

Girlguiding is more than just an after school club. It offers membership of a worldwide organisation which has given opportunities to girls for over 100 years and where friendships can be made for life. None of this can happen without the adult leaders who volunteer their time and expertise. Could you be one of those adults? It doesn’t matter if you didn’t belong as a child. Join us now! You’ll be welcome. You don’t have to have children of your own or work with children. More adult help means more girls can experience new adventures. Girls can do anything!

WELCOME TO MY CRAFTY COLUMN! Michelle x

This months’ make is a POM POM SHOOTER game great for playing on your own or with a friend. It’s really easy to make and cheap to make and provides endless hours of fun.

YOU WILL NEED:

A paper cup, a balloon, a pair of scissors, a pom pom and some pens or coloured tape.

Decorate the cup using tape and pens

Tie the neck of the balloon in a knot

Cut off the other end

Cut the bottom of the cup out using a sharp knife, you may need a grown up for this

Place the balloon over the end of the cup

Place a pom pom in the shooter

Pull back the knotted balloon so the pop pom falls within it, aim and fire.

TOP TIP…

If playing with a friend see if they can catch the fired pom pom in their cup and shoot it back to you. If playing on your own set up some empty tin cans on a wall and try and knock them off with the pom pom.

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum

Welcome to our August ‘View from the tower’

Our Annual ‘Echoes of the Past’ was again a great success, made possible by your attendance. Over 400 visitors enjoyed the display’s and exhibits together with the reenactors and vehicles. The additional event on the Saturday with the Tea Dance was also very well attended, so much so that there is another planned for September. Watch this space and our social media pages for the forthcoming date.

The current visitor numbers have exceeded 2,000 so far. This has been bolstered by the Bury St Edmunds Radio Club Rally which attracted over 300 visitors. Groups like this, together with Car Clubs, schools and aviation enthusiasts, regularly hold their meetings and events with us.

Would your group like to have a BBQ, afternoon tea get together, or even a birthday party with us? We even had a great wedding ceremony and party last year. Please contact us via our email address, as below.

Our strong historic links with the American service personnel from the ‘40’s continue. Recently, 5 family groups have seen the museum displays relevant to their ancestor’s presence here at Rougham. It is a great pleasure being able to welcome all these people who have made the journey to find the information of their loved ones.

Although all are significant, one person stands out. The daughter and her husband of TSgt Boyd Hall visited.

Very few servicemen had the credentials of this gentleman. He was a top turret gunner and engineer with the 459/454nd Squadron of 322nd Bomb group. His records show that he completed 67 missions between July 1943 and February 1945. This was an exceptional dedication and commitment, especially as the majority of aircrew were only in their late teens and early twenty’s.

Thank you to all that served and a big thank you all the families and relatives that continue to both visit and support us. There will be further family visits during the next few months and we will be holding our Annual departures service of remembrance in December (date to be confirmed).

For our details please refer to our website:

BURY ST EDMUNDS CRICKET CLUB

Bury St Edmunds was the only cricket club to have three players included in the England Over 40’s team that beat Wales Over 40’s at the picturesque ground of Arundel Castle owned by the Duke of Norfolk in Sussex. England won the game by 110 runs, Sean Park scored 40 and a former Bury St Edmunds player Ben France also played scoring in the 40’s.

The cricket club caters for a wide variety of players with a particular emphasis on youth during the season. On Mondays around 40 youngsters ranging from 5 to 8 years have taken part in All Stars and Dynamos cricket with several volunteers guiding the coaching.

On Wednesdays the women and girls section have been training and recently won their first match of the season.

At senior level Saturday and Sunday teams have provided a full compliment of players, the only problem has been the weather which has cost

several fixtures, despite all the rain the Victory Ground has remained in very good condition and we hope the sun shines for the remainder of the season.

MEETING A HERO

It’s not often you have the opportunity to meet a hero, especially at my time of life, but recently I had that privilege…

I was invited by Karen Cannard (her of the Waste Diet fame and now a careers expert and Suffolk Sound radio presenter) to go to the Youth Climate Change Conference held at Suffolk One, Sixth Form College in Ipswich on the 3rd July. My job was to interview Chris Packham for 10 minutes to go on Karen’s show on 10th July.

I have been following Chris for more than 30 years and now was my chance to meet him in person. I had put 5 questions together which I hoped were interesting and thought provoking. It’s not often I feel nervous but that morning I had a whole bunch of butterflies swirling around my stomach. On top of that I nearly missed the train from BSE. Great start to the day.

Upon arrival we were ushered through to a back room to meet Chris for a quick chat before the interview. He was so relaxed and engaging that it took away any fears immediately.

It was like meeting an old friend, he had not read the questions prior to the interview and answered them with such ease, eloquence and knowledge that the whole thing was a pleasure. The ten minutes flew past and he was still speaking as he was being chivvied to go through to give his first presentation of the day.

The whole thing was organised by the Suffolk Climate Change Partnership as part of its work engaging with schools, charities, and community groups to bring about positive change. They arranged for 250 students from schools across the county to visit the conference. The children had the

opportunity to speak to Chris, various young activists and visit a range of stalls run by groups supporting and promoting environmental initiatives, conservation, council actions and much more.

The main messages from the conference were ones of urgency and hope. It was fantastic to see so many young people wanting to stand up and make a difference.

Chris said: “Suffolk has put together a bold coalition of initiatives to address climate breakdown. Hope for me lies in the young, so it is critical that we do not just listen to their needs and ideas, but give them an active role in shaping their future, not a token seat at the table - but the leading voice”(Quoted from Suffolk News)

Emma Dixon, Suffolk climate change partnership manager, added: “The Suffolk Youth Climate Conference empowers young people in Suffolk to join us in the fight against climate change.

If some of the students at the conference can follow in the footsteps of Scarlett Westbrook, a 21 year old activist with a bio as long as your arm, and Kids Against Plastic ,run by two sisters Ella and Amy who have been campaigning against plastic pollution since they were 10 and 12 years old, then we can all take some hope from their actions.

It would be great to hear from some of our own young people around Bury St Edmunds, and find a way to link them all together.

Maybe for any youngsters out there with great environmental aspirations, try speaking to your teachers, see what’s going on in your school and ask them how they can link to other schools.

This could be another way for Suffolk to drive towards its goal of becoming the greenest county in the country.

Are you a master of your own disguise?

Very often we look at our fellow human beings and decide because of the way they look or the things they say, what type of person they are. I will be the first to put my hand up on presuming people’s personalities/jobs/lifestyle but very rarely getting it right. I may have mentioned to you I love going for a coffee in town and get a great deal of pleasure meeting new people. This gives me an opportunity to test my instincts deciding if my presumptions are correct.

How do we feel about people deciding what type of personality/job/or lifestyle you lead?

Does this make us a bad person for presuming these things?

In August we will be looking at Ephesians chapters 4,5, and 6 and how we should

be observing ourselves and remembering that there is one Spirit in us all, we should speak truthfully as we are all members of one body. We can look into this further by considering if we are honest with our friend’s, neighbours and even strangers in what we say and how we act.

I have the privilege of working with much older people, and I always try to imagine if their family were watching my every move or word, they would be happy with what they see and have heard. It is hard to maintain this thoughtfulness when we return home and speak to our nearest and dearest, and that is when I believe faith has stepped in to help me be the same person inside and outside my home. (My children may say otherwise). I am trying to be honest with everyone I know.

You may have been through a sleepless night or been unwell, but when someone says ‘How are you?’ Are you honest with your reply or do you give the generic response; ‘I’m ok thanks?’ I happened to ask this question at the end of church last week to a fellow member, and was really blessed as the gentleman I asked actually gave me an honest response which knocked me sideways because of what he was going through. Because of his honesty I can now pray for him and feel able to do something positive which if he had been a master of his own disguise, I would never have known anything was wrong.

I pray that we all have the strength to be honest with each other as this not only shows the friendship’s we have but the strength we gain from them.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

The power of encouragement!

My wife has a friend, who for many years was a children’s nurse in the Special Care Baby Unit in a famous London hospital. During that time, she had a dynamic, pioneering boss, who had the highest standards imaginable. However, this lady rarely praised her colleagues. And so, after 10 years, Alice left her job, anxious that she wasn’t good enough to work there. But on her leaving card, her boss wrote this: “If my child was ever ill, and in this hospital, I would want you to be the nurse looking after her”. Alice says that if her boss had said that to her just once, she would still be working in that hospital today.

If we’re honest, we can all be generous with our criticism and mean with our praise. But I suspect that this isn’t how God wants us to live.

Writing to a church in Greece, St Paul said: “Encourage one another and build each other up”.

Which is still a relevant message to us isn’t it? Because in today’s hypercritical world, people really need building up and

encouraging which is what we try to do in Southgate church.

However, this is something that everyone can do. ‘Thank you’ is one of the most powerful phrases in the English language. Especially if you make your praise specific; if you identify precisely what the person has done and say exactly how it has helped you. You can do this when you send a message, an email or a card. People thrive on a little recognition. It makes them feel valued and significant. And it encourages them in their work, their relationships and their volunteering.

But praising people also teaches them the value of affirming others. Those who receive encouragement

generally enjoy the experience, and so in time, become encouragers themselves.

Over the next month, why not intentionally try to affirm the people around you. In your family, your workplace and friendship groups..? Keep praising them all month... and see what affect it has.

In his famous Parable of the Talents, Jesus says that when we meet God on the last day, he will praise all those who have believed in him and lived-out his teaching. Indeed, God will say to them, what they have been saying to people, all their lives: “Well done, good and faithful servant”.

COACHES CORNER – SHORT GAME

This month’s coaches corner looks at SHORT GAME and how using a different set up can help you around the greens. If this is an area of your game that isn’t as strong as it could be then lets, see what we can do to help.

SET UP – These three simply changes that we suggest will allow you to use the simple putting style chipping technique a lot easier.

• Raise the handle of the club you are chipping with to match the angle of your putter.

the past this year he has taken his chances and has looked confident doing it.

Golf at Paris 2024: Golf at the Olympics will begin on Thursday, August 1 at Le Golf National near Versailles. That is when the men’s event gets underway with play continuing for four rounds until the final round on Sunday, August 4. The women’s event then gets started on Wednesday, August 7 and comes to a close four days later on Saturday, August 10.

• Stand in slightly closer to the golf ball.

• As a reaction to both of the first points you will feel you should now grip lower on the grip.

TECHNIQUE – People often say you should use a putting style technique around the greens. This style is great, however without the above changes to your set up you will struggle to make the putting style technique work consistently.

Move the ‘’Y’’ Shape you make with your arms and the club back and forth in a putting style action. This allows you to make a low risk and consistent movement with your short game shots.

Give this SET UP and TECHNIQUE a go and see if you can add a new shot to your game!

If you want any more help with this or any other aspect of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this great game more.
