Welcome to the September issue
Summer, it was nice knowing you! The holidays went by in a flash didn’t they? Back to school panic buy is almost done, and now we can try and get back into some kind of routine...
With the nights starting to draw in, it’s that time of year when we can start thinking about packing away the BBQ and getting the slow cooker back out. There’s something comforting about autumn meals, and we’ve got a delicious Slow-Cooked Beef Stew recipe to try on page 40. And for a tasty treat, Chocolate Raspberry Brownies on page 39.
There’s lots on this Autumn at some of our fantastic venues in the town. If you fancy a bit of theatre, ‘Murder, She Didn’t Write: The Improvised Murder-Mystery’ looks great fun at Theatre Royal 13th–14th September. Or for some art and poetry, ‘Moon Tell Me Truth’ is a travelling exhibition that features art and poetry created by Gazan children aged 9-15 years, at The Apex until 22nd September.
But before we wish away the year, let’s hope the sun stays out for most of September, and with any luck, the heating can stay off for another month!
We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care, and we’ll see you in October!

Skincare & electrolysis is for everyone
Moving home is well recognised as a stressful occurrence in our lives. We lose our old friendly neighbours and familiar routines and a sense of belonging. I’ve felt similar emotions since relocating my business. I may only have moved down the A143 from Diss, but I had my clinic there for over ten years and now I’m the ‘newbie’ on the block even with many years experience behind me.
I’m excited now to be part of the team at Bury Physio
where I’m an advocate of skin health and education.
I specialise in electrolysis which is the permanent removal of hair (which is still as popular as it ever was since I first trained in 1995) and skincare. I know that one word covers a huge range of possibilities.
Skincare – and electrolysis –is for everyone. Did you know you can permanently remove hair from any part of the body except inside the ear and nostril? That means I can
remove hair ON the ears –and that’s not an uncommon request from some men of a certain age. And if you suffer from PCOS, hirsutism, pre-or post menopausal hair growth, electrolyis can greatly relieve any social discomfort.
I opened Geraldine Walters Advanced Skincare on my return to Norfolk after twenty years in London where I had trained and later worked as a therapist and lecturer and I’ve loved my work. I now hope to spend the next ten or so years in Bury and hope to meet you.
If you have any questions about skin care, products or treatments that you’d like to know about, please send them to me at info@geraldinewalters.co.uk and I’ll answer them here in The Directory.

Abbeygate Cinema Celebrates its Centenary
Since 1924, Hatter Street in Bury St Edmunds has been a home for moving images, from the very early days of cinema, right through to the current digital landscape.
Abbeygate Cinema is now celebrating its centenary year with an extra special programme of films which takes inspiration from each decade of the past century, commemorating this massive milestone.
From its humble beginnings as a music hall, showing short snippets of moving images, to now holding the biggest screen in town, Abbeygate has been a home for entertainment to the Bury St Edmunds community and holds a special place in the hearts of many residents. The building has seen generations pass through its doors, with life-long patrons now introducing their families, welcoming in a new wave of film lovers.
Much has changed in the past 100 years, projection equipment was digitised in 2010 and expansions to the premise have allowed for three auditoriums and an adjoining restaurant and bar.
However, the heart of Abbeygate Cinema remains the same, bringing film and The Arts to its local community whilst providing
them with a safe and welcoming home away from home.
From 23 August, the collection of classic films will be screening right through until the final celebration on 09 November. Featuring beloved titles such as The Shawshank Redemption, Bladerunner, Jaws and The Big Lebowski, the schedule also includes unique events and screenings scattered in there too, from audience selections to history tours with the cinema’s longestrunning employee, Pat Church.
General Manager, Gareth, had this to say about the momentous occasion, ‘We are delighted to be celebrating 100 years of film on Hatter Street. This is a fantastic opportunity to reminisce and remember all of the amazing connections
made here, from first dates, first films for children to lifelong friendships amongst the team- past and present. We start the celebrations with JAWS, a film that means a lot to Pat and with tickets at £1.50, we hope for a full screen to kick things off with a bang.’
He added ‘It has been a hard couple of years for Cinema, but we are delighted to be backed by our wonderful and loyal membership base. Throughout our Centenary celebrations, a member can bring a guest for free to any of these special screenings. We take great pride in being the oldest Cinema in Bury St Edmunds and our close connections to the local community. As well as being a celebration, we are also fundraising for a defibrillator to help keep Hatter Street and wider safe’

INDESIT FRIDGE
We are proud to show you how your donations make a difference
We held our first Grow Your Dough event this year and what a success it was.
Each team was given £50, thanks to sponsors and chartered accountants Knights Lowe, and given three months to make it ‘grow’. And make it grow they did! We had over 30 teams taking part in the challenge, including bakeries, shops, schools, pubs and care homes and the result was a staggering £31,300 raised.
The money was raised to provide an activity assistant for ward G4 which is the elderly care medicine ward at the West Suffolk Hospital, and where many patients experience dementia or delirium. Having a dedicated member of staff to interact with patients will be vital to
help older patients maintain their cognitive skills while they are in hospital.
And we are thrilled to announce that we have welcomed Gemma to the My WiSH family who has now joined the ward ready to take on this incredible role.
Gemma said “I can’t wait to engage with patients in this new role. I am looking forward to having the time to talk to them, find out the hobbies they may have had in the past, what they did for a job and then finding activities that will help them have fun and to reminisce while they are with us”.
We have also welcomed another member to the team thanks to your donations.
Clare Marney has joined as a family counsellor for the loved ones of those undergoing cancer treatment here at the West Suffolk Hospital.
We already fund Michelle who is a counsellor, pictured with Clare, for patients to help them through their journey, but we knew their loved ones need support too. This role was funded thanks to donations from last year’s soapbox and other donations over the year.
Clare said of her new role, “I am very excited and privileged to be setting up a new family cancer counselling service. The service is to support family, friends and carers of all ages of anyone who is under the oncology services here at West Suffolk Hospital.
We can offer one to one, couples or family sessions which will be tailored to meet the needs of each individual and their family. The sessions can be face to face, online or over the telephone. People will be offered a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space to talk.
We hope that many people will benefit from this service and I am looking forwards to making some good working relationships with colleagues and service users.”
These are new roles to the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and we hope, as before with the play specialist we provided for the paediatric emergency department, their roles will continue. We are so pleased to be able to bring these more holistic roles to the community and we know they are going to make a such a positive impact on your care.

Back-to-school tips for parents: Setting your child up for success
Here are five back-to-school tips for parents to ensure a successful start to the new academic year.
1. ESTABLISH A ROUTINE
A consistent routine helps children adjust to the demands of school life. Setting regular wake-up times, meal schedules, and bedtimes will really help them, even if they are not so keen!
2. AN ORGANISED STUDY SPACE
For older children, a designated study space at home can greatly improve your child’s concentration and productivity.
3. COMMUNICATE WITH TEACHERS
Building a strong relationship with your child’s teachers is key to staying informed about their progress and any challenges they might face.
4. ENCOURAGE HEALTHY HABITS
Promoting healthy habits is essential for your child’s well-being and academic success. Nutritious meals, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep directly impacts concentration and energy levels.
5. SUPPORT EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING
Starting a new school year can be stressful for children, whether they’re entering a new year group or dealing with social pressures. Try to create a supportive environment where they feel comfortable sharing their feelings.
September signals the end of summer, the beginning of autumn, and the start of a new school year. Where has the time gone?
Chronic pain is a condition in its own right. It can be very isolating and lonely, you lose so much of yourself.
Chronic pain can impact on your day in so many ways i.e. activities, sleeping, taking care of yourself and others, social life and working, which can make your pain worse. This response creates a cycle that’s difficult to break. Self-management and joining a support group play an important role.
Looking forward this month group resumes after the summer break and a group outing takes place in rural Suffolk.
Chronic Pain has recently hit the headlines highlighting the everyday struggles people face in getting a diagnosis and finding a way to cope in spite of their pain.
If you are having a tough time the trick is to only think about the moment you are in, and make sure you enjoy it.
So much in life isn’t important so let it fall away. Try not to look too far down the road, there’s no need to know

SUNNICA SOLAR FARM
In our drive to nett zero to help reduce the effects of man-made climate change we are having to make some difficult decisions when it comes to large scale constructions. There is no bigger controversy than the solar farm project on the Suffolk, Cambridgeshire border.
If you haven’t heard about it, this is a 2,500 acre site on farmland which has attracted a lot of objections from individuals, companies, farmers and a joint collaboration between 4 councils who all have been working together to stop the construction. They argued that there were plenty of large South facing roofs on buildings in the area that could be used instead. After a 6 month consultation it has now been given the go ahead.
The new energy security secretary, Ed Miliband, said solar power was “crucial to achieving net zero”. Mr Miliband added solar power would provide “an abundant source of cleaner, cheaper energy on the mission towards 2030”.
In this article, I thought it would be a good idea to look at the pros and cons of this farm and give a few comparisons to other land use in UK.
THE PROS
According to Sunnica, the solar farm could power 172,000 homes with renewable energy and create 1,500 jobs during construction, with 27 full-time jobs to run it. This means a low carbon footprint for every KWh of electricity produced. It also gives us greater energy security where we are not relying on foreign powers to supply us with electricity.
In addition to this the grass and plant life that live under the panels will still act as a carbon sink sequestering large amounts of carbon during the lifetime of the solar farm, additionally the land is still available to absorb rainwater to help alleviate flooding.
THE CONS
According to councils – “This scheme will permanently and detrimentally impact the landscape of a vast part of West Suffolk and remove thousands of acres of land from food production.”
THOUGHTS
We need more renewable energy to help increase energy security in UK and reduce man-made climate . The idea of putting solar panels on South facing roofs is ideal, but the financial cost of installing panels on roofs compared to constructing a solar farm is enormous. Unfortunately, money does enter the equation and sits heavily on the side of a solar farm.
Losing 2,500 acres of farmland is a huge blow and we need food security as well as energy security but here is where we need more joined up thinking from the government. According to a local farmer to my home in West Stow, one of his colleagues is leaving 2,000 acres of prime farmland fallow this year because of the new subsidies and grants system. He has estimated that he will lose money if he plants crop in the 2,000 acres. That is insane.
I also thought I should have a look at the effect of losing 2,500 acres of farmland
I hope you found this interesting and please
the numbers, the total area of agricultural holdings is about 41.6 million acres, of which about a third are arable and most of the rest is grassland. In 2022 only 10.9 million acres were planted. So, of the planted land the solar farm represents 0.02% of the area. Quite small I think.
Here’s a shocker, the area of golf courses in UK is around 310,000 acres, that’s a lots of potential farmland and solar parks. If you covered the golf courses in solar panels you could supply 66% of the total electricity requirement for UK. Just a thought!
Finally the area required to build 1,500,000 new homes in UK is around 120,000 acres and will emit around 120 million tonnes of CO₂, just to construct the homes. That’s a 5% increase in our nations carbon dioxide footprint each year for the next 5 years, and a lot more land than this one solar park.

Would you like to go back to the future?
Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church
How are you at managing change? Does it excite you to NOT KNOW what tomorrow will bring or does it fill you with dread?
Christ Church was blessed with having the same minister for 33 years, which is very unusual these days. As a PCC we did have time to prepare, as we knew the date of Jonathan’s departure, but we did not know how long it would take to find a new minister.
In the Bible, although Jesus tells his disciple’s he will die, not only do they not believe him, especially when he says that some of them will betray him, they cannot envisage a world without him.
We know that all of this came true. When they found Jesus’s body had gone and
he appeared as an angel to give them assurance; the disciples could then rejoice as they could see how the future would be in Christ’s name.
Now, I am not going to put too much on our new minister’s shoulders, but we are very excited to announce Sarah as our new minister for Christ Church. Not just because she comes with great life experiences, but she will be a wonderful calming influence. I am sure some will worry about the future, but I have faith that Sarah will reassure the Moreton Hall community that Christ Church is here for everyone to serve them.
If we look back over our own lives and we think about the things that we were worried about I am sure most of us would tell ourselves not to
worry so much. What ever will be ‘God Knows’ and we are all in his hands.
Whilst change is inevitable, most of us prefer certainty to uncertainty. I am sure many teenagers will be thinking about their future, and how their exams will change the path they go on. We can all remember learning to swim, taking our driving test, or travelling on our own for the first time. Can we remember the feelings we experienced when our head stayed above water, passed our test or arrived at the correct destination? These memories build up our confidence, even if the results are not achieved on the first attempt. This creates a vision into what could happen if we have a little faith. Would you still want to go back to the future, knowing what you know now?

Pray about everything!
One bank holiday, my teenage son went swimming with his friends in a river in Norwich. But by the Wednesday he was quite unwell and very sick. My wife said that I should ring the doctors’ surgery and ask for an appointment. I wasn’t sure it was worth it. After all, it was mid-morning. Anyway, I prayed and asked God to give us an appointment. When I rang, the receptionist listened carefully and said she’d talk to a doctor. Ten minutes later she rang back and asked me to bring my son in for an emergency appointment. I was amazed!
During the appointment the doctor examined and questioned my son. She then asked us to wait in reception for a blood test to see if it was Weil’s disease. I respectfully asked her if she would consider giving him antibiotics straight away, because by then, he was looking truly awful. But she firmly said that she wanted to start with a blood test and so we waited and waited. But I used that time to pray that God would come into the situation and do a miracle.
After 20 minutes, the same doctor came out into reception and gave me a piece of paper. It was a prescription. She said “I’ve been thinking, perhaps it would be a good idea for him to begin taking antibiotics right away”. Within 24 hours my son was a whole lot better!
I believe that that doctor’s change of mind was an answer to prayer.
In his letter to the Philippian Church, in chapter four, Paul encourages them not to be anxious about anything, but to remember that ‘The Lord is near’. Instead of worrying, he says, pray your way through life’s challenges.
No one understands how prayer works. All we know is that God seems to change the situations and the people we pray for. Perhaps this explains why Jesus prayed first thing in the morning. You can pray about anything and everything; even your most basic needs. So, I would encourage you to try praying at the beginning of each day. Because when you do, you will begin to sense that God is at work around you. It won’t mean that everything in your life goes well. But you will have an increasing sense that God is making a tangible difference, even in the situations that initially seemed hopeless.

THE 19TH HOLE
BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH
Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching
Welcome back to the 19th hole, this month see’s us move into our last month of summer and what a summer of golf it has been.
However, in September we still have one massive golfing event to look forward to this is of course the SOLHEIM CUP!
The Solheim Cup is a biennial golf tournament for professional women golfers contested by teams representing Europe and the United States.
The cup is played over three days. Since 2002, there have been 28 matches—eight foursomes, eight fourballs and 12 singles on the final day. This is the same format as the Ryder Cup.
This year’s venue is the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. Leading the European team in the states will be Suzann Pettersen. We are all hoping that her passion and want to win as a player is brought into her captaincy.
COACHES CORNER – 3 GREAT PUTTING DRILLS
So this month I have THREE great drills that will help the most important areas of your putting, STRIKE, START LINE and SPEED. This area of the game is so important but maybe not practiced as much as it should be.
This month’s drills are not with a training aid that will cost loads of money but with TEE PEGS, that you all will have in your golf bag already.
This drill will assist you with STRIKE, one of the most over looked aspect of putting. Striking you’re putts from the center of the club face will allow you to get better distance control.
Drill: Make a gate with two tee pegs either end of your putter (as shown in the image), start wider
than needed and as you become more confident close the gap up. STRIKE PUTTS BETTER!
Moving on now from STRIKE we will now look at START POINT, this drill allows you to focus on the line on which you want your putt to roll down.
Drill: Again make a gate either side of your intended start line, at first make this gate wide and as you become more confident close the gate up. START PUTTS ON YOUR LINE!
The last area is distance control; this is a simple drill that you can set up before teeing off that will allow to adjust to the pace of the greens for that day.
Drill: Set up THREE distances with some tee pegs, its up to
If you are struggling with this or any other aspect of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this great game more.
you what distances you choose. I set up 10ft, 20ft and 30ft. Being able to consistently judge these distances will give you a great base on the course to judge putts that are longer or shorter.
