Welcome to the November issue
Autumn is officially here, and the days are getting shorter. With Christmas approaching, it’s the perfect time to begin preparing for the festivities ahead.
There are several Christmas craft fairs this month and a special Christmas Makers Market at the Moreton Hall Community Centre on 24th November, the perfect place to start picking up some unique Christmas gifts. And don’t forget the wonderful Christmas Country Shop at Blackthorpe Barn!
The nights are getting darker, and with Bonfire Night on the 5th, we have the ideal recipe on page 42 to enjoy after the fireworks. A hearty chunky beef chilli is perfect for warming up after a chilly evening. Pair it with rice or fluffy jacket potatoes. It’s especially great for entertaining guests, as you can easily make a larger batch to serve more people.
November see’s the launch of the My WiSH Christmas appeal. Each year they provide over 550 gifts for all in-patients under the care of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust which includes the West Suffolk Hospital, Newmarket Hospital and Glastonbury Court. They can only do this with all our support, see pages 28-29 for ways you can help.
We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care, and we’ll see you in December!

Bury St Edmunds TV star Andi Oliver fronts new modern slavery campaign
One of Suffolk’s most recognisable faces has teamed up with fellow film and TV stars to front a major new modern slavery campaign. Celebrity chef and TV presenter Andi Oliver has joined forces with modern slavery charity Causeway, and celebrities including Julie Hesmondhalgh and Kerry Godliman, for their Stand With Survivors campaign.
Modern slavery cases across the East of England have been increasing year-on-year. In 2023, whilst London accounted for 45% of all referrals for modern slavery support in England and Wales, through the government’s National Referral Mechanism, the wider South East counties accounted for 12%, Eastern England accounted for 5%, and the East Midlands accounted for a further 5%.
It is estimated that over 50 million people worldwide are currently trapped in modern slavery and exploitation, with over 100,000 of those in the UK. Survivors in the UK will most commonly have
experienced labour exploitation, sexual exploitation and criminal exploitation.
Now chef, author and TV presenter Andi Oliver (61), who grew up in Bury St Edmunds, has teamed up with the UK modern slavery charity Causeway, to front a new campaign called Stand With Survivors. Andi is recognisable to many as the presenter of BBC’s Great British Menu, and has also hosted series including The Caribbean with Andi and Miquita and Andi Oliver’s Fabulous Feasts, as well as the popular Stirring It Up podcast.
including Oliver!, My Fair Lady, and Les Misérables.
Survivors: Life Beyond Exploitation aims to increase awareness around modern slavery, and educate the public about the signs to look out for which indicate somebody may be experiencing modern slavery and exploitation.
Joining Andi to front the Stand With Survivors campaign is fellow Suffolk celebrity Kerry Ellis (45), who was born and brought up in Haughley, near Stowmarket. Musical theatre star Kerry originated the role of Meat in Queen’s We Will Rock You, and was the first British Elphaba in Wicked on the West End. Kerry continued in the role of Elphaba on Broadway, and has also had leading roles in productions
In a special film that has been produced for the campaign, Andi explains “modern slavery does not always mean somebody is being physically deprived of their freedom, although this does happen”. She goes on to say how “Causeway help modern slavery survivors recover from trauma and develop safe and fulfilling futures”. Kerry adds that “traffickers and exploiters go to great lengths to hide what is happening”, before asking the audience to join her and “stand with survivors”.

Bryan TRUEMAN, BARDWELL, SUFFOLK
“All my work begins with a moment observed suspended in my minds eye and later brought to fruition by the physical act of manipulating paint onto canvas or board and exploring all the tools, at my disposal, that facilitate that process. Some pieces don’t make it to the end and become a “worked” surface to begin the next piece…..it’s all a valid and an extremely motivating process that drives me on. Landscape and Abstract works have a synergy where one feeds the other in the process of exploring markmaking.”
REVIEW:
“After a long and exciting career, Bryan’s pictorial acuity is so sharply honed he is able to respond to the visual world with the kind of explosive energy usually associated with younger artists. But this uncanny ability to transform a familiar Suffolk landscape into a pyrotechnic eruption of colour and dazzling mark-making has evolved over decades of piercing focus as an artist working in many different countries and cultures. His most recent paintings and prints are virtuoso performances that bear the trademark of wide and lengthy in-depth experience. However, their most enchanting quality is their retention of an effervescent freshness and vitality. Ivan Day, Food Historian and Author

Norfolk Boy
A young man’s hopes of becoming a jockey are destroyed when he is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit.
Born in the Norfolk Brecks, twelve-yearold Isaac follows generations of his family into service, working at the stables of Warren Hall. Inheriting his late father’s gift with horses an unpleasant incident turns in his favour, an opportunity he could never have imagined opening before him.
Leaving his beloved Brecks and family, Isaac travels to Newmarket with hopes of becoming a jockey. On the verge of achieving his dreams he meets the mysterious and dapper Jack, an encounter that will change his life forever.
Accused of a terrible crime Isaac’s future is dramatically grabbed from him.
Condemned to the far side of the world he must endure a journey where hunger, fear and despair are ever present, to a place where new friendships will grow, but old enemies are never far away.
It is a place where he must fight for his very survival.
Dennis A Roberts lives in Suffolk. Previous writing credits include short stories in the Suffolk Libraries Anthology, as well as an article in Norfolk/Suffolk Life magazine. He has always had an interest in the settlement and history of Australia, which led to his first novel Norfolk Boy.
Dennis explains: “Inspired by an entry I read in the records of the penal colony of Port Arthur Tasmania, Norfolk Boy is a story I have always wanted to write. It tells of hope and injustice, of intrigue and frustration, of growth, truth and new beginnings. Having family connections to the Brecks and Newmarket, and a fascination for the period of our history when people were shipped halfway around the world, experiencing harsh, almost inhuman treatment, battling to survive, I loved the research that has allowed me to weave fact into fiction.”

Help us give a present to every patient this Christmas
November see’s us launch our fifth Christmas appeal and, as always, we need your help.
Each year we provide over 550 gifts for all in-patients under the care of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust which includes the West Suffolk Hospital, Newmarket Hospital and Glastonbury Court.
This includes adults as well as children as everyone deserves to know that Santa hasn’t forgotten them!
Previous years have seen patients receive tartan blankets, Christmas ornaments and cosy socks as well as the usual toys and smellies which have all gone down so well and made people feel special on a day when no one should be in hospital. We know the staff also love to have these gifts to hand out when they are working this special day.
To achieve this goal, we need to raise £3,300 which is where you come in.
Our virtual Christmas present drop allows you to choose a ‘gift’, write a message and help us make a difference. You can even add an image if you choose so maybe add a fun festive photo or your company logo.
Tanya Fifield
How to get involved this Christmas
Get everyone to pop £1 in a pot in lieu of sending Christmas cards round the office. Add your company logo to our Virtual Christmas Present appeal to promote your local business.
Hold a festive bake sale and use the donations to buy a gift.
Get crafty and make Christmas cards or festive trinkets and sell them to friends and family.
Take on a challenge and start a Just Giving page for My WiSH Charity.
Have a dress down day in the office.
Hold a competition for the best Christmas wreath or bauble.
Hold a ‘Secret Santa’ tombola and sell tickets.
Just a few ideas but we know our fundraisers are just brilliant at thinking outside the box so we can’t wait to see how you help us this year.
What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School
By Zara Cowling, Head of School & Andy Abbott, Governor
Another busy month at Hardwick with so much happening and wonderful achievements from our children.
Our Year 3 pupils showcased a beautiful ballet performance for parents following weekly workshops with the Royal Ballet School. The grace, confidence and skill they displayed was truly remarkable.
The Friends of Hardwick as always busy organising events to raise valuable funds for the school. Two Movie Mania showings and Glow Discos were hugely enjoyed as can be seen by children loving the moments in this montage!
Hardwick have been really strong on the sport front so far this term, participating in a mixed football tournament and cross country in
September, and just recently got to the semi-final in the girl’s football tournament.
Huge thanks to Miss Weller-Poley accompanying and coaching the children and she was really proud of their efforts, the children showed such support for their peers through each sport event.
Well done, Hardwick!
Need more from your existing solar installation?
If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system
The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours.
A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it.
If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage.
Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.
Why choose Generate + Store?
• Local business for 20+ years
• NICEIC and MCS accredited
• 95% of customers recommend friends & family
• Full end-to-end service with great customer support
• No hard sales!

Latest news from
Lymphoedema Support Network advice…
“Speaking out” about having lymphoedema and lipodema isn’t easy. It’s usual when first diagnosed to struggle “own or accept” the condition(s), just learning how to spell and pronounce them can be hard enough without getting to grips with what it all means.
Some people are bold, wearing their garments with pride and some people cope by hiding their garments, avoiding talking about it, but many people, after a while, lie in the middle or swing between the two, depending on their current
circumstances. LSN offers the following to help explain and educate others when raised with questions:
“Thank you for asking. I live with lymphoedema/ lipodema, it is a long term condition that causes swelling on my tissues. It is caused by a failure in my lymphatic system and although it can’t be cured, I manage it by wearing compression garments, exercise and movement, taking extra care of my skin and a special form of
massage. It can affect anyone from birth to end of life if their lymphatic system is damaged for any reason, but don’t worry it’s not catching!”.
The LSN is a great charity that helps people with lymphoedema and lipoedema and one is supported by LSS. It is only £20 a year to join and is an outstanding source of valid information and support. Check out their website for more detailswww.lymphoedema.org

SUPPORT FOR YOU…
This time of year, can seem full of love and fun, but it can also feel a very lonely time. Which is made harder if you suffer from pain. Suffering long term pain can feel very isolating and depression is often a side effect of it.
There is support in this area for YOU. The Chronic Pain Support Group. Does what it says.
We are a group of Ladies and Gentlemen who suffer with long term pain. Ranging from mild long-term pain to severe long-term pain. We offer friendship, laughter and support. Who knows better what it feels like than fellow sufferers. Getting out, meeting people and having a laugh helps with our mood and distracts us from our pain.
And there’s always support if you are having a bad spell. What we don’t offer is medical advice as we are not qualified to do so. But we do share experiences and support. Sometimes just giving you a little confidence to ask the medical profession, the questions you need to ask to help yourself.
Our support offers monthly meetings on the 3rd Thursday with a speaker followed by a social with refreshments. Speakers are varied and can be interesting, informative, offer alternative ideas for some short respite from your pain or they can be just fun.
Monthly, on the 1st Thursday we have Positively Crafty, open to Members. You can be a complete beginner or an

Air Pollution
West Suffolk Council has a legal duty under the Environment Act 1995 to monitor air pollution and to take action where pollutants exceed nationally set levels. We monitor nitrogen dioxide, which is the main pollutant from vehicles, at 80 locations across West Suffolk. Nitrogen dioxide is linked to respiratory diseases. Levels are required to be below 40 micrograms of nitrogen dioxide per each cubic metre of air. We publish our findings each year in an Air Quality Annual Status Report (ASR).
The latest report to 1st January 2024, highlights that nitrogen dioxide levels across all sites in West Suffolk are below national thresholds, below pre-pandemic levels and are down on the previous year.

Craft Corner
Welcome to my crafty column! Every month I share a crafty activity for you to try at home. Check out my facebook page for more info www.facebook.com/thecraftyfoxes or visit www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk
This months’ make is all about Bonfire night. Make your own handheld sparkler.
YOU WILL NEED:
Assorted coloured paper, a stick, bamboo skewer or chop stick, gold acrylic paint, an old toothbrush, scissors and Sellotape.
Cut your paper into rectangles roughly 6 inches x 8.5 inches. You need 2 different colours for each sparkler to create depth of colour and a sense of sparkle.
Repeatedly fold and scrunch up all the bits of paper so they have crease marks all over them. This helps the sparks catch the light.
Cut your rectangles in half and create a fringe by cutting thin strips into the paper, being sure to stop 1.5 inches from the bottom.
Place your paper in a baking tray and flick gold paint over them to create sparkly flecks of gold all over them. Concentrate on the fringing bits most.
You may wish to paint the sticks black for dramatic effect or find a stick from the garden that’s dark in colour.
Use Sellotape to stick your first piece to the end of your stick and then wrap around the rod tightly until you reach the end. Secure with another strip of tape.
TOP TIP…
You can try adding different textures of card and paper to make more interesting sparklers or add tin foil to give them a reflective look. Or glow in the dark paint flecks instead of the gold!!

HELPING BIODIVERSITY IN YOUR GARDEN
It’s no secret that UK has a terrible record when it comes to maintaining biodiversity and wildlife in our countryside. It seems like a forlorn cause with land pressures coming from every side, but if we all work together in our gardens we can make a difference. Many of these things can be done over the Winter months so do not hesitate to start planning your wildlife garden now.
If you are anything like me, watching a blue tit nip to a birdfeeder, grab a morsel of food then flit back to its perch to feed is a fantastic sight. A healthy wildlife garden can provide many wonderful moments of drama and pleasure and also help your wellbeing. Here are a few ideas to help you along the way:
1
If possible avoid applying chemicals to your garden. It may be weed killer, it may be slug pellets, they are all poisons and may end up in our rivers, streams and local environments causing havoc to wildlife. Look for passive, environmentally friendly alternatives.
2
Provide a water source, it could be a huge pond but just as likely it may be the size of a birdbath. Whatever it is, wildlife needs water. If you are lucky enough to have a garden that can take a pond, bear a few things in mind. It’s a good idea to position the pond so that it receives some shade, only populate with native plant species, make sure there is a shallow end to allow hedgehogs and other animals to climb out if they happen to fall in. Your pond may look barren at first, but be patient wildlife will soon find you.
3
Dedicate an area of your garden to wild flowers. This gives a natural beauty to your site but also a food source for many pollinators.
4
Pile logs in a shaded area of your garden, they are a great habitat for many species of insects, spiders, small mammals and even frogs and newts. The logs will also provide a fantastic habitat for fungi. If you are unaware, the latter are a very important part of any ecosystem. They break down plant and animal debris thus recycling nutrients and increasing their availability to soil.
5
Make a compost heap - not only can this provide a good source of nutrients for you soil but you may be lucky enough to encourage a slow work or grass snake to take up residence. These are both totally harmless and the worst thing they can do is give you a good stare. Be really careful not to harm any organisms as you turn your heap.
6
Provide bird feeders to encourage a wide range of species to your garden. Once you start to feed, keep it going, especially in the Winter months when food is at a premium for many birds. If possible, we suggest you provide a wide range of food sources, different species eat different foods.

Let us not forget
Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church
It is something that I have become more aware of as I journey through life; that we should remember those that have given their lives so we can be free today.
As I stand and hold a two-minute silence with 1000’s of others across the country, I am sure, like me, we not only reflect on those lost in war, but those still fighting in countries trying to defend their right to freedom.
Often the sound of the single bugle player playing the last post can bring home the emotions of family and friends that are in our armed forces
today ready to step up if the need arises.
It reminded me of a moment in the Olympics this year when a court game (I think it was table tennis) was going on and the opponents were arguing with the judge and no one would back down. Eventually someone in the PA box started playing John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine all the people’. The players began to laugh as the words resonated, and a decision to carry on meant the game could continue.
I often pray that simple solutions like this could be found for us all to live
in harmony. I know Jesus showed us, through his short life, how forgiving each other, and letting go of any bitterness we harbour, we can let go of things that went wrong and place our trust in him. This allows us to move on, but we do not forget what has happened, and we do learn from our experiences.
As you pay your respects in November either by buying a poppy, standing with others on Remembrance Sunday, or being at a church service, let us all be reminded that a time of reflection can help all of us through our daily lives.
Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum
Welcome to our November ‘View from the tower’
Well, the end of another season – in fact a great season. Why? Because of YOU, our visitors and supporters. The final numbers and our financial position will be available at the AGM. Please remember all are welcome but only members can vote if an election or point of order is required during the meeting. The official notice is - the Annual General Meeting 2024 for the Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum will be held on Sunday November 24th in the Museum Tea Room; proceeding will start at 11.00.
‘Masters of the Air’
One of the years statistics will be the number of American family visits we have had. Amazingly we have doubled the number of parties – over 30, which is up from the 15 groups last year. As I said last month, this is probably a reflection of the great film ‘Masters of the Air’. I am sure this trend will continue into next year (and possibly beyond).
Again, time passes quickly and the Departures Remembrance Sunday – December 8th is rapidly approaching.
Please join us at the Museum 10.45 for 11.00.
We again will be welcoming the USAF Colour Party from RAF Mildenhall who will be participating and leading the short Memorial Service.
All members, supporters and visitors are very welcome. Light refreshments, tea and coffee, will be served after the ceremony.
Relatively short this month but just one picture of visitors who enjoyed a BBQ this summer.
Although it is over 18 months since the airfield enjoyed aircraft activity, the members of Skyward have continued to chat and fly.
Graham and Wendy, together with a few volunteers, provide plenty of burgers, sausages etc. on a very pleasant evening. Thank you to all those who helped and attended. The group also made a donation to the museum funds. If you are planning a gathering, meeting, social event – please contact us and we can put your event at the museum, in the diary.

Everyone Can Change!
Lee’s mother died when he was young and he went off the rails. He says that he fell in with the wrong crowd and so when someone asked him if he’d like to fly to Thailand with a suitcase he said “Why not?”.
Lee was caught smuggling drugs and sentenced to 200 years in a Thai prison. He was 27. There, he found himself in a cell with 40 other men. The toilet was a single hole in the floor. He lost all hope.
But it was in jail that Lee met a Christian missionary visitor who gave him a bible. By then he was in a cell on his own 24-7. And so, he spent lots of time reading that bible. One day, he got to Luke 4:18, where Jesus proclaimed that he had ‘… come to set the prisoners free’. The verse stopped Lee in his tracks. And so there and then, he cried out to God to set him free!
Lee kept praying that prayer for the next 5 years, until one day, out of the blue, he was told that he was being transferred to a UK jail: HMP
Rye Hill. By now, Lee was resigned to spending the rest of his life in prison. But one day his cell door opened and an officer announced that he was being released because he had been pardoned by the King of Thailand!
Today Lee is living in the Midlands. He has a regular job and goes to a local Methodist church. He says: “Now, I am in the right place, doing the right thing, with the right people”.
Perhaps you know a young person who has some questionable relationships, has made some poor choices or has embraced a lifestyle that you wouldn’t have chosen for them? If so, don’t despair! Instead, keep praying for them. Lift them
to God daily, in prayer and believe that he can do a miracle in them just as he did for Lee.
You might also find it helpful to read the bible, as Lee did - especially the stories about all the bad people who changed. Moses in the book of Exodus, King David in 2 Samuel and Saul in Acts - murderers whom God transformed and then used to change the lives of many others.

THE 19TH HOLE
BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH
Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching
Welcome back to the 19th Hole, this month sees us enter the winter with the clocks changed and more regular cold snaps of weather.
Some of us will decide to play less golf at this time of year, however it is the best time to make changes ready for next season.
These changes don’t have to be just to your technique, they could be with fitness to add speed, distance or just to feel fresher as you play. Another area to look at, at this time of year is your equipment. This could be through a maintenance check of the loft and lie of your irons, replacing your grips or making sure your driver is set up as good as it could be for you.
COACHES CORNER – SHORT GAME SECRETS
This month we look at the short game, often an area that is overlooked during peoples practice sessions. However, this area can really help when you’re either having a bad day and need to grind out a score or you’re playing well and that one up and down allows the round to continue.
We going to think about LANDING SPOTS and LANDING
ANGLES, by understanding these two elements you can make a decision on the best way to get your chips closer.
We will be looking at this in a very simple way, I want you to think about having a LOW, MEDIUM and a HIGH shot. You can play these shots with which ever club you like as everyone will and can play them differently.
LOW MID HIGH
Landing Point –Close to player
Landing Angle –Shallow, encouraging the ball to roll on landing
Low flight - the ball Landing in the first third of the shot length and then running the rest of the distance on the ground
PRACTICE TIP
Landing Point –Mid point between the player and target
Landing Angle – Slightly steeper using some on the landing angle to slow the ball down and then seeing some roll
Medium flight - the ball landing in the second third of the shot with a steeper landing angle and seeing the ball running a shorter distance on the ground
Landing Point –Furthest point from the player
Landing Angle –Steep, using this to slow the ball on landing
High flight - the ball landing in the final third of the shot with a steepest landing angle this being used to slow the ball down resulting in minimum roll on landing
Make sure you highlight and mark out your LANDING SPOTS during practice, focus on just hitting this spot and then react to the result by changing clubs for the situation you find yourself in.
As I have said earlier, you can play these shots with whatever you feel most comfortable.
As a general rule the low shot would played with a lower lofted iron, working through the high shot with your most lofted wedge. However, these aren’t set in stone and this is something you should experiment with in practice.
