Welcome to the October issue

Well the weather is certainly Autumn’ing right now isn’t it? Soon it will be Halloween, closely followed by bonfire night and then, before you know it... I’m not going to say it.

It’s easy to feel like cosying up at home when the weather turns and the darks nights are here, but, if you do fancy a fun night out, look no further than your local Community Centres!

On Saturday 26th October, 7pm-8.30pm, there’s a kids Halloween party followed by a DJ night from 8.30pm both at the Moreton Hall Community Centre.

And over at the Southgate Community Centre on Saturday 12th October, there is a Family Harvest Barn Dance plus a Spooky Fun Day for kids on Wednesday 30th October, from 2-4pm – see page 22 for ticket details.

Can you help? We are looking for people to join our monthly magazine delivery team in both the Moreton Hall and Southgate areas. If this may be of interest to you, or someone you know, see page 4 for details of how to get in touch, we’d really appreciate it.

We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care, and we’ll see you in November!

Suffolk Libraries Reading Quest has been an exciting opportunity to get the whole family involved in reading and making memories during the summer!

The challenge has been open to children of all ages and all reading abilities.

Every week during the this summer holidays,

Suffolk Libraries staff and volunteers have been on hand to chat to children about the activities completed each week and the exciting books they’ve read.

While visiting the library, children have collected prizes for completing each of the six Reading Quest challenges.

Upon completion, the children have collected a medal and a certificate.

In our Moreton Hall Library we have had 57 children talking part in the Reading Quest with 22 of these children successfully completing the six challenges and receiving prizes, medals and certificates.

comedian Mark Thomas is back to stand up and brings his critically acclaimed show Gaffa Tapes to the Apex on 11th December 24

Mark’s now famous mix of standup, theatre, journalism and the odd bout of performance art has made him one of our oldest surviving alternative comics. Often referred to as the ‘godfather of political comedy’ (amidst many other things), Mark has been performing comedy for nearly 40 years. With a recent-ish step towards theatre in his last few shows, Mark is back to his finest stand-up form in Gaffa Tapes as he sets out on the road this autumn.

In his time, Mark has won 8 awards for performing, 3 for human rights work… and 1 he invented for himself. He has made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product and 3 Dispatches for Channel 4, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4, written 5 books and 4 playscripts, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and was commissioned to write a show for the Royal Opera House. He has forced a politician to resign, changed laws on tax and protest, become the Guinness Book of Records world-record holder for number of protests in 24 hours, taken the police to court three times and won (the fourth is in the pipeline), walked the length of the Israeli Wall in the West Bank (that’s 724km), and generally mucked about trying to have fun.

October is breast cancer awareness month

Anita is a breast cancer survivor, and this is her story.

Back in August 2022, while family were visiting, Anita felt a lump in her breast while taking a shower. As so often happens, she put it to the back of her mind as she enjoyed the special time with her loved ones. When they went home, she knew she should do something about the lump but, as with so many of us, normal life resumed, and she didn’t go and see the doctor immediately. Fortunately, Anita told her husband, Michael, that she had found the lump and he ensured she made an appointment to see her GP.

Anita was already seeing the doctor for another issue and because there was another person in the room, possibly a trainee, she felt uneasy and sadly didn’t report the lump. This meant another appointment the next day at the insistence of Michael.

She was then referred to the breast unit at the West Suffolk Hospital within one week for a mammogram, test and finally the diagnosis.

Anita said “Because I could see my lump my idea was to leave it for a while to see if it changed but this is totally the wrong idea. I urge women who notice

any changes to go to their GP. If it turns out to be cancer, then the sooner you start treatment the better”.

Anita saw the surgeon who explained she had cancer. Anita said “Although I expected it, to actually hear it said was a shock. I am a positive person but it knocked me for six.”

Anita said about the days and months that followed, “It’s important to have someone by your side whether it’s like in my case, my husband, or another relative or friend. You need someone to support you, for you to confide in as you prepare to face the many appointments, potential surgery and all the treatments.”

Within ten days Anita was having surgery for a lumpectomy at the hospital and preparing for the next stage of treatment.

Anita said the next part can be overwhelming as you can feel bombarded with information, but her advice is to take it steady, read the literature at your pace and rest up.

Anita said “You can’t paint over chemo, it’s really not a nice experience but you just have to

keep positive and think about life on the other side”.

The chemo soon meant that Anita started to lose her hair and she was directed to Steve Trowles, at the Stephen John Salon on Moreton Hall, who immediately took control of the situation helping Anita realise that the time had come to talk about a wig.

Over a year on Anita has now been given the all clear, her treatments are over and her hair has started growing back but she wanted to share her story.

She had had no family members with breast cancer, and being past 70, her three yearly mammograms had stopped, so she urges women to keep an eye on their bodies, to notice any changes and to seek advice quickly should anything seem to change.

These two pieces of equipment cost £25,000 and £40,000 respectively and aid staff when removing lymph nodes to pinpoint the first one, and to check all the specimen needed is taken.

Mama B’s cancer wellbeing day

Run with Steve Trowles at the Stephen John Salon once a month, these pamper days have been invaluable to ladies like Anita. Treatments are available as well as love and support from fellow cancer patients.

Breast care cushion club

Anita woke from surgery to find a heart shaped cushion, made by the Breast care cushion club, which is supported by My WiSH who provide the materials. The shape is to hug under your armpit and to keep you comfortable as you heal.

The Macmillan unit

We have amazing donations on a weekly basis for the Macmillan unit at the West Suffolk Hospital. If you would like to stay local and support cancer care then please contact the team via our website, www.mywishcharity.co.uk.

To access any of these sessions please talk to the Macmillan Information Centre, 01284 713023.

What am I looking for?

Anita said she could see her lump, showing on the surface of her breast. Others don’t know they’ve got any signs of breast cancer until they have a mammogram. Others find an anomaly when they do their regular check.

This shows the importance of knowing your body so you can spot changes, but also the importance of going for check ups when they are offered.

Need more from your existing solar installation?

If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system

The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours.

A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it.

If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage.

Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.

Why choose Generate + Store?

• Local business for 20+ years

• NICEIC and MCS accredited

• 95% of customers recommend friends & family

• Full end-to-end service with great customer support

Moreton Hall WI

For our annual August outing we visited Euston Hall for the day, enjoying a guided tour followed by a snack lunch and then time to explore the extensive grounds, church and mill.

We were blessed with lovely weather and everyone enjoyed the day immensely.

In September we were back at our usual meeting time at Moreton Hall Community Centre and it was lovely for everyone to meet up again with time for a chat and catch up.

Our speaker was Catherine Buchanan who spoke on the subject ‘Women of Bury St Edmunds’. Who knew that Bury St Edmunds had been the home to such a variety of fascinating women who left their mark, both on the town but also the world of their time?

Catherine’s talk was excellent and left us all wanting to know more.

If you fancy joining the WI or coming to a taster meeting as a visitor, do get in touch. Contact Alison on 01284 701433 or Annette on 01284 769407.

It is a buzzy time of year

It’s the time of year when even more insects seem to be flying about.

So taking care not to get bitten, or dealing with any bites ASAP, is vitally important for those with Lymphoedema and Lipoedema.

Using an effective insect repellent spray can help, as can wearing repellent bracelets and patches too.

If you are unlucky enough to get bitten, treat the bite straight away with

antiseptic wipes/soap, the appropriate histamine product.

If swelling occurs, do contact your GP and/or the West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service for advice and treatment.

WE KNOW AND WE GET IT…

LSS meetings are a safe supportive place for those living with lymphoedema and/or lymphoedema to come to. We get it, we know what it’s like to be first diagnosed with a condition you know nothing about, it difficult to spell and to be told it’s a chronic long term condition. We also get it when you’ve been living with all the symptoms but have yet to be diagnosed, you’ve been brushed off by some health professionals, even told to lose weight! And we also get it, when you have been living and coping with these conditions, often alone, for some time. So, come along, meet others and chat, share your stories, or just listen to others, and feel safe and not alone when living with lymphoedema and/or lipoedema. Partners, friends and carers are also welcome too.

October 7th – Coffee, Cake and Chat evening

December 2nd - Festive Fun Evening

7pm – 9pm in Room 1 at Moreton Hall Community Centre. There is no joining fee or referral needed, do come along and find out more about living with, and managing, Lymphoedema and Lipoedema in a relaxed and friendly setting, along with a cuppa and biscuit.

ACTIVITIES ARE A GATEWAY TO FRIENDSHIP, INTERESTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

A real mix of people from different backgrounds. A lovely thing that people make friends as part of a group and then meet up outside. It’s a real springboard for new friendships. Many a friend has been made at CPSG.

Its easy to get stuck in the humdrum of doing the same things week in week out. Bring laughter into your days and step outside. It’s important to have something to look forward to. It gives back companionship. You can come along and receive a warm welcome straight away at CPSG.

Taking that first step to attend a support group can be very daunting. You may get to the place and feel too anxious to step across the threshold let alone go into a room full of people you have never met before. Before you turn around to go home take a deep breath and give it a go, unless you do you may never know how that one step feels and how much of a warm welcome you will receive once you enter that room. At CPSG you will immediately be enveloped in the warm, comfortable and friendly atmosphere and be accepted as you are.

Cricket Club BURY ST EDMUNDS

Recently, Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club were delighted to host the official opening of the outdoor cricket nets. The nets were installed earlier in the year and have been in use for the cricket season.

In front of a large audience that included the leader of West Suffolk Council, Cliff Waterman. The tape was cut by The Mayor of Bury St Edmunds Councillor Diane Hind and former Essex and England cricketer Graham Napier.

After a few coaching tips from Graham Napier the mayor thrilled the audience with a demonstration of her batting skills. Facing 14 year old Zyan Imam who plays junior cricket for Essex, the mayor played a number of attacking drives back to the bowler.

The opening marked the completion of a project that commenced with fund raising in July 2021 with a cricket match against a team of England Legends.

With the support of Bury Town Council, The ECB, Suffolk Foundation, locality money from Richard Rout, Sarah Stamp and Patrick Chung as well as a large number of local companies and individuals the sum of £80,000 had been raised.

Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club President David Barker paid tribute to the support of West Suffolk Council that enables the Victory Sports Ground to continue to provide sport for a large number of organisations.

Club Chairman Paul Whittaker highlighted the important role the club plays providing cricket not only to club members but across the wider community.

The mayor, a great sports enthusiast said she was delighted to open the facility.

Graham Napier recalled how practice played a big part in his career and facilities such as these new outdoor nets are very important to the future of cricket.

Losing the Winter Fuel allowance for many OAP’s is going to have a profound effect on their lives. Heating or eating is a horrendous choice to make.

We have not looked at ways to reduce your fuel bills for a couple of years so I thought it would be a good time to re-visit the subject. These are basic actions but together they can make a difference, save you money and reduce your carbon footprint at the same time.

2

The simplest way to reduce heating bills is to put on another layer of clothes - Lowering the thermostat temperature by 1.5°C can reduce your heating bills by up to 10%. This could mean a saving of £250 (= 460kg CO₂) per year. This is probably the simplest saving we have on our website.

The first thing I want to mention is that this is the third year of a Thermal imaging project in Suffolk, where environmental volunteer community energy groups and parish / town councils carry out thermal imaging surveys of homes. Surveys of people’s homes show where heat may be escaping and a follow up discussion provides a plan to help reduce the heat loss. Bleed your radiators to maximise their efficiency. Water passing through the whole system will increase the heat passing into each room.

If your boiler temperature is more than 65°C you are unnecessarily overheating water and wasting money. Note: your boiler must reach this temperature at least once a day to reduce the chance of Legionella bacteria proliferating in the water, this is a nasty Pneumonia type disease.

Check that the heating and hot water is timed to come on just before you wake up and turn off when you go to bed. Also if you go away for a few days turn the heating right down, there is no point wasting money to heat an empty home or heat water that won’t get used.

If you have radiator thermostats, use them to make sure your boiler only provides heat where and when you want it. Stop heating unused rooms and if you can turn thermostats down to between 2.5 and 3 you could be saving £70 a year (= 128kg CO₂).

7

Stick foil reflectors behind your radiators. It’s a waste of energy heating the wall when the heat could be reflected back into the room.

I hope this helps a little to saving you some money this Winter

Good neighbours

Do you know ‘your neighbours’? Do you just say hello to them now and again? Have your neighbours helped you solve a problem or invited you in for tea and a chat?

We spend so much of our lives trying to work out who we can trust and rely on in a crisis, we often forget the people living next door. I am guilty of not always reaching out and letting my neighbours know about who I am, and if I can help them. It’s strange how we become so insular, often feeling we should solve our own problems. I have lived where I am for 25 years, and I do remember going to our neighbour’s when our washing machine broke down (I was told it would be two weeks before someone could fix it), and neighbours kindly let me wash our family of 5 clothes twice. It was a Godsend.

Which brings me nicely on to what God said, as the 2nd commandment, ‘Love your neighbours as yourself’; in other words look out for each other, and be there when needed. We don’t have to think of our neighbours in the literal sense, people we see in our every day lives, are our local community, who we could benefit from getting to know and support one another at any point in our lives.

In September David, one of our ministers gave 3 sermons linking together, and one of them focused on James Chapter 2 verses 1-10 & 14-17. He asks us not to choose when we are good neighbours but always show humility to every human being to truly follow in Jesus’s footsteps.

My second time I needed help, was to find a certain size screw

driver to open a very small screw. My neighbours were very obliging, and it saved me a trip in my car which I’m always grateful for.

I did try getting to know everyone at once, by inviting the street for Christmas drinks & mince pies, and it was great fun having time to chat to those people I see every week, but am usually unable to spend time with.

I know so many people who go out just to feel they have a purpose, and hopefully get chatting to someone. Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could all just offer our neighbours a cup of tea, and time to get to know each other. Usually, our greatest fear is not having friends, rather than not knowing who to trust; so don’t be afraid, and try starting a conversation, after all you never know when you need to have good neighbours.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Trust God!

Some years ago, a friend of ours told us that his business was in great difficulty and that he needed a lot of money to bail himself out.

A few weeks later, my wife’s father sold the last of his land and gave us the money. It arrived in our account two days before our friend was due to go bankrupt. If we hadn’t been able to help him, he would have gone under. Our friend isn’t a Christian, but I told him that I believed that God had given us that money at just the right time, specifically to help him. “Maybe” he said. He then promised to pay the money back when he’d sold his house.

However, selling that house proved very difficult and it got to the point where it had been on the market for over two years. By which time, our daughter was about to go to university and so we really needed him to pay us back, so that we could help her with her expenses. And so, my wife and I began to pray in earnest that our friend’s house would be sold. After a few months

he messaged me to say that he had finally found a buyer! I texted him back, asking him when the money would come through..? “On the 28th of September” he replied. This was the day that my daughter went to university!

Trusting God isn’t easy. Especially in important areas of life where we can become anxious. But over the years, I have found that God is faithful and that his timing is excellent. So often, he has acted or answered a prayer, at precisely the right time. As he did twice in our dealings with my friend.

If I’m honest, I’d prefer it if God answered my prayers more quickly. But I wonder if he doesn’t resolve things instantly because he wants me to persevere in trusting and praying. In such instances, deciding to trust God is an act of

will, not a natural response; a decision made despite our fears. Furthermore, trusting God is not a one-off decision, rather it is the resolve to keep giving your situation to God as opposed to worrying about it. We express our faith in prayer and when we do so, we discover the faithfulness of God and so our faith in him continues to grow stronger.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back and I can’t believe we are into October already, Autumn is here and that spells the end of the golf season for us all. But the action on tour continues, with the best players on the DP world tour coming into the last few events in their season.

However, a champion has already been crowned on the PGA Tour and now they have started their wrap around season, all this months events are highlighted below.

So as October arrives its at this point we should start thinking about any adjustment we might want to make in our games over the winter months.

My suggestion is to write down some areas you would like to improve, and stick to these areas. If you can tailor your practice sessions and lessons over the winter to stay these areas and stay on track. It’s very easy to allow recent games or form drag you away from your targets.

COACHES CORNER – EVERYONE LOVES A TAKEAWAY

This month we look at TAKEAWAY’S, this has nothing to do with your favourite weekend orders but more the early movement in your golf swing.

So many of us (me included) get this first movement either a little quick, inside or picked up and this can (not for everyone) cause issues into the backswing or downswing.

If this sounds like something you do, then why not try this very quick and easy drill to help your takeaway.

Set Up: Place two balls up at address and then place your club in between so that the back of the club is resting against the back ball.

The Push: The idea is to push the back ball away straight leading to a wide takeaway position.

Any other movements wont allow the ball to be pushed back straight or stay close to you.

Swing: Make your normal swing and finish in a balanced position watching another good shot.

On Course: When you’re on the course you can still use this drill by imagining the ball being there both in practice swings and real shots.

I hope this edition of the 19th Hole has helped, if you would like any advice or help with your golf game please get in contact. Here’s to a great time out on the golf course, and I will see you next month.

This simple drill has helped me and others over many years, I often use it in warm ups to make sure the swing isn’t being rushed into position early in my swing. Why not give it ago the next time you are having a practice.
