Welcome to the July issue
As I write this, we know that England have at least made it through the group stages of Euros 24, how far will they go? Only time will tell, but good luck to them! (I realise this opening paragraph may not age well if we get knocked out in the last 16, but these are the perils of publishing!).
In or out of the Euros, the BBQ’s will continue I’m sure, so we have a recipe for Molten Cheese Stuffed Burgers on page 40, the perfect dish to serve up if you have people coming round.
If you are eating out over summer, why not take advantage of Orissa’s Early Bird offer? You can find all the details on page 39. We are so lucky to have plenty of fantastic places to eat in Bury St Edmunds, but it’s always nice to support the independent restaurants when we can.
And a huge congratulations to everyone who completed their GCSE’s and A-levels recently, now you can relax a bit and enjoy the Summer before your next adventures!
We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care, and we’ll see you in August!

SESCA’s ‘11th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta’ Report
Members of the St Edmundsbury Sailing & Canoeing Association, based at Lackford Lake near Bury St Edmunds, enjoyed champagne conditions for their 11th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta recently.
The event was originally conceived as one-off event to coincide with Antigua Sailing Week in the Caribbean. However, having come the attention of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, who have subsequently provided generous support, the regatta has become the
highlight of the club’s racing and social calendar.
The Club’s Commodore, Norman Savage, set an interesting figure of eight course making full use of the lake. With twenty-one entries, it made for a congested starting line and close quarters racing throughout the fleet.
Alan Wright, in his newly acquired Solo, made the most of the shifty and variable breeze to take two firsts and a second to secure the overall prize. Mike Steele, in his Laser, was second overall with two seconds and a
third, with Sam Parrett and his youngest son, Gus, sailing a Firefly, impressively winning the last race and coming third overall. Debs Steele, in her Topper, finished fourth overall and first lady helm. Penny Davis was second Topper and first junior, followed by Bertie Parrett sailing another Topper.
An extensive set of prizes, provided by the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, were presented by the Commodore, with Alan Wright receiving a well-earned bottle of English Harbour Rum as a fitting reward for his achievement.

POSTCARD CLUB BURY ST EDMUNDS
“Bell’s Series Postcards” was the subject of the talk given by John Copeland this month. On display were many examples of Bells photographic postcards, some anonymously produced by sub-contractors.
Sydney Bell was a photographer in Islington who began producing postcards of London’s tourist attractions and zoo animals in 1903.
The business expanded and passed to a Mr Bullen in 1904 and continued as Bells’ Photo Company Limited, moving to various locations in Essex, until the company closed in 1957-58.

Our fifth soapbox takes place on Saturday 31st August and it’s not too late to take part.
Each year our entrants create some fabulous karts, pimped up with the organisations branding, showcasing their favourite film or by creating a miniature version of one of their business’s vehicles. They then take to the stage to ‘present’ their soapbox to the judges before doing a presentation performance to wow the audience and to score points.
Based at the Priory School we also have our Soapbox City where you can get up close and personal with the soapbox teams to see their fantastic creations.
There’s also food and drink and stalls to enjoy and entry is FREE, just what you need for the last weekend before the end of the school holidays.

At last Summer appears to have arrived but at Hardwick this always heralds a time of happiness and some sadness.
It is when we celebrate our fantastic Year 6 pupils how they have represented our school with distinction at sporting events, residentials and activities, how they have, we are certain, excelled at their SATS and entertained at their final KS2 show.
Some have been with us from Reception through the school and some have joined us more recently but together the cohort have left a lasting legacy and will be fondly remembered.
So the sadness is that we will miss them, especially our dedicated teachers and support staff but we wish them well as they start their secondary education adventure and move on to their new schools.
What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School
By Zara Cowling, Head of School & Andy Abbott, Governor
As you can see from the pictures they have certainly enjoyed their fulfilling Hardwick experience.

The speaker at our June meeting was Helen Hillier who came armed with masses of garden flowers from her nursery. She gave us lots of ideas on how to arrange garden flowers and made it all look so easy. The finished arrangements were stunning. It was an open meeting and we welcomed visitors from other WIs and members of the public. A fabulous evening was had by all.
Our July meeting is on Wednesday 3rd July at 7.30pm at Moreton Hall Community Centre. It is also an open meeting, so everyone is welcome. Tickets are £5 on the door. Tips to make the summer sunshine more enjoyable for those living with Lymphoedema & Lipoedema
Now that summer has finally arrived, some handy warm/ hot temperature tips for you.
It is best to avoid exposing affected lymphoedema and/ or lipoedema areas to heat and sun, which can cause inflammation, so protect your skin from the sun by covering up with light weight clothes and wearing sun cream with an SPF of at least 30, ideally using SPF 50.
Do use SPF sun cream AND insect repellent before any
exposure to the sun. It is not just when being out and about as skin can burn or suffer heat bumps through glass, so take care when being in the car or sitting near windows.
Don’t forget you can still burn through your compression hosiery. Some patients find applying sun cream before putting on their compression garments helps. Having tried doing that, I personally found it was then difficult to get my

compression sleeve on and to stay up too.
Keep hydrated, wear a hat and keep a cooling spray handy – this can be sprayed directly onto compression garments. If you have an empty small body spray bottle, just fill it with cold water, keep it in the fridge, or if out keep it in a cool bag, it’s an effective cheap way to help you to keep cool.
But mostly importantly, do enjoy the summer sunshine!

A true friend isn’t always the person you’ve known the longest. A true friend is the person who walks into your life and says ‘I’m here for you’. They are a shining bright star in the darkest times. They are the ones who laugh with you, cry with you and stick around through the highs, the lows and the difficult times. They see you at your best, they see you at your worst
and they are the ones who see pain behind your smile and stay to wipe your tears away.
Friendships are vitally important if you find yourself being isolated from living in long term pain, some can be forged within a support group setting, as many have since CPSG came together.
A place where friends are there for you, no matter what.
ZOOM ART BY JANE
The ladies of the CPSG art club have been working very hard. When we started we were just learning to draw. Now we can work in pencil, coloured pencils or watercolour. I am very proud of the hard work our artists are doing. They have been drawing some wonderful portraits. Every Wednesday we have our zoom hour of art, with demos, which sometimes can be unintentionally funny. Art with no pressure. Whatever age you are it is never too late to have a go. I sincerely believe everyone can draw. More importantly drawing can be fun and relaxing.

Molten cheese burgersstuffed
Take burgers to the next level by stuffing them with cheddar and mozzarella for a gooey centre, and topping them with a dollop of herby burger sauce
Prep time: 45 mins
Total time: 35 mins
Serves: 4
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, very finely chopped
70g smoked pancetta, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
4 thyme sprigs, leaves picked
500g lean beef mince (no more than 10% fat)
50g fresh breadcrumbs
1 egg yolk
60g mature cheddar, grated
60g grated mozzarella
For the herby burger sauce
120g mayonnaise
2 1/2 tsp English mustard
1/2 small bunch of parsley, finely chopped
1/2 small bunch of basil
50g baby gherkins, finely chopped
To serve
4 seeded burger buns, split
2-3 Little Gem lettuces, leaves separated
2 ripe tomatoes, sliced
Crispy fried onions
Sponsored by
METHOD:
Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion with a good pinch of salt for 15 mins until soft and translucent. Add the pancetta and cook for 5 mins more, then add the garlic and thyme, and cook for 2 mins. Remove from the heat and leave to cool for 15 mins.
Tip the mince into a large bowl. Massage with your hands for 5 mins to tenderise the meat, then add the cooled onion mix, the breadcrumbs and egg yolk. Season generously. Divide evenly into four, weighing for accuracy, if you like. Mix the cheddar and mozzarella together. Form the beef portions into patties, patting each into a 10cm round. Divide the cheese mixture into four, and, in your hands, form each portion into a firm ball, then press into a roughly 4cm disc. Working one at a time, put a cheese disc into the centre of a beef patty, then bring the meat around the cheese to cover. Lightly pat with the palm of your hand to flatten slightly, then chill, covered, for at least 30 mins or up to 48 hrs. Make the sauce by whizzing the mayonnaise, mustard and herbs together in a small food processor. Stir through the gherkins, then cover and chill until ready to use.
Light the barbecue. When the flames have died down, grill the burgers on each side for 4-5 mins until charred (if you don’t have a barbecue, see tip, below). Wrap individually in foil and leave on the barbecue for 5-7 mins so the cheese centre melts.
Grill the buns, cut-side down, for 1-2 mins until toasted. Spread all the cut sides with the sauce, then fill with the beef patties, lettuce, tomatoes and crispy onions.
Rewilding
There’s been a lot of discussion recently around rewilding and ways in which we can adapt our gardens and the world around us to better protect our declining population of insects; so much so that it was the theme at last year’s Chelsea Flower Show! But unlike growing wildflowers, rewilding is even simpler –it’s letting nature take back control and inviting it into your garden rather than working against it with the use of pesticides and poisons.
In our own gardens, there are a few ways we can help to rewild – for instance, the No Mow May initiative (which should really become
No Mow Summer) encourages us to leave areas unmown over summer to allow nature to move in. Waiting until August to mow again means the insects in your garden can feed and the soil temperature will remain lower.
Leaving hedges to mature and flower without constant pruning. Lifting a paving slab and replacing with a shrub or small tree. Let nature take over – and that’s exactly what our Certificate of Merit volunteers are looking out for when judging front gardens, not just carefully manicured bedding displays.
BURY IN BLOOM FRONT GARDEN CERTIFICATES OF MERIT
Residents will be pleased to know that the judges will be viewing your gardens during the first two weeks of July. There is no need to enter as gardens within the borough boundaries will be viewed. If you are aware of any resident that is facing challenges in life but finds gardening a very rewarding activity, please email certificates@buryinbloom. org.uk to let us know where that person lives.
On the Bury in Bloom website under Certificates of Merit you will find further details including the points system.

Craft Corner
WELCOME TO MY CRAFTY COLUMN!
Every month I share a crafty activity for you to try at home. Check out my facebook page for more info www.facebook.com/ thecraftyfoxes or visit www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk
This months’ make is a nice Summery tin foil fruity art. It’s really easy to do and the ideas are endless.
YOU WILL NEED: A glue gun, piece of cardboard, pencil with rubber on, Sharpie pens and tinfoil.
Draw a simple line drawing picture onto your cardboard with pencil or pen
Trace over it using a hot glue gun. Try to keep one continuous line so the height is consistent
Wait for the glue to dry (overnight ideally to fully harden)
Once its dry cover with a sheet of tin foil pressing down firmly. Use the rubber end of the pencil to push the foil at the edges so it creases around the glue lines giving definition
TOP TIP…
I would advise to do lots of designs in glue at once, so once they have dried you have lots of different pictures to play around with.

June also reminds us of the passing of a ‘Museum and Airfield Stalwart’. Although it was 13 years since he passed Sir John Agnew was another ‘original’ who believed that the history and memory of those who served should be maintained at the Tower. We remember him with fondness and miss his great support. He will be remembered on the 7th at Echoes.
Sir John Agnew
It is always good to expand on our developing attendance – we are very grateful to all our visitors, the current figure (for about 9 weeks) has already exceeded 1000. The total since December being over 1,300. This is a fantastic achievement for a ‘relatively small’ venue. Please keep coming (especially for the Cake!).
It gives us great pleasure to celebrate a very special event – for a very special couple. Congratulations from us all go to Cliff and Wendy Hall who marked 67 years of marriage on the 22nd June. Cliff has been involved with the Museum from it’s beginnings in the 90’s, with the Veterans from the 70’ and 80’s but remembers the American presence during the 40’s. A fantastic historian and we are extremely grateful for all his knowledge, his continuing involvement and talks. Congratulations again to you both.
The ‘Work Party Wednesday’ continue at 18.00hrs on Wednesday’s, we've still got plenty to do to the buildings and displays. All are very welcome to assist us, no task too small.
See you again next month in August, here in The Directory.

BURY ST EDMUNDS CRICKET CLUB
The cricket season is approaching the half way stage, it has been a difficult season with more matches cancelled due to rain than in most seasons. However, a great deal of cricket is being played at the Victory Ground with Bury St Edmunds standing in the top three of the Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League.
Most Saturdays 4 teams are competing and it is good that so many young players are making their mark with good performances. Alistair Allchin took a hat-trick of wickets on June 8th against Mildenhall and two weeks later Joel Johnson also performed a hat-trick for the 3rd team.
Thanks to Martin Lee and Jamie Grove a great deal of junior cricket matches are being played, the highlight is the clubs under 13 team making it to the final of the Suffolk County Cup a great achievement from this team of promising young cricketers.
Visitors are welcome to attend matches the bar is open almost every Saturday and Sunday and selected times during the week day evenings.

A hat-trick

This month I thought it would be a good idea to drill down into the mix of power sources which make up the UK’s renewable energy mix.
The ultimate aim in UK is to produce all our own power without relying on other countries to deliver energy sources. In this way we will have energy security and be protected from price fluctuations dictated by worldwide energy supply. Just as importantly our renewable energy capacity in UK helps our move to nett zero carbon to help reduce man-made climate change.
Regarding the overall picture of renewable energy production we are doing really well. As of 2022, around two-fifths (41.8%) of the UK’s energy came from renewable sources, and between 2007 and 2022, the UK’s renewable energy capacity increased almost tenfold from 5,745 to 53,500 megawatts.
That’s huge, but as you may have noticed over the years of reading this monthly article I have developed a healthy cynicism when confronted by statistics and information feeding down from government sources, so I have been delving deeper into the whole picture.
It’s with heavy heart that I have to report some negative aspects of our energy supply from renewables. Most of it is good but there is a one fuel source that messes up the overall story, however the direction away from fossil fuels is very positive.
2. SOLAR ENERGY
1. WIND ENERGY
Between 2012 and 2022, the UK’s wind energy capacity more than tripled from 9,030 to 28,537 megawatts. This is our main source of renewables and the potential capacity is far higher with the possibility of many more off shore windfarms and when allowed the development of more on-shore wind farms.
As of 2011, the UK generated as little as 244 GWh from solar power. In 2022, this had increased to an all-time high of 13,283GWh. That’s over 50 times more than 11 years ago. As we have seen in a recent article there is a government drive to help households, public institutions such as schools and private sector organisations to install solar panels. I think we should see a large increase in energy produced by PV’s in the next few years.
3. BIOENERGY
Bioenergy refers to electricity and gas that is generated from organic matter, known as biomass. This can be anything from plants and timber to agricultural and food waste – and even sewage.
This represents a large section of the renewable energy production, but here is the sticking point. Drax power station which produces 5% of UK electricity is included in this sector because it burns wooden pellets to produce electricity. The power station uses up to 6.5 million tonnes of wooden pellets a year. These pellets all come from overseas.
A large volume of the pellets come from USA and Canada where it has been shown that virgin forest is cut down to make the pellets.
You couldn’t make it up! The overall Carbon footprint of energy coming from Drax could be as high as that of a gas fired power station. Makes no sense. I’ll leave it there before I tear my hair out. We will come back to this and nuclear power at a later date.
I want to end this article on a high note, so here goes – most renewable energy production isn’t just better for the environment, it also acts as a boost to the economy by creating new jobs and infrastructure. Reports suggest that the UK could gain an extra £70bn if it becomes a global leader in renewable energy.

What is it about FAITH?
Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church
When I was a teenager my interest in church waned. I wanted to go to Rollerbury more than understand what faith could give me. In fact, my parents said they would buy me roller skates if I got confirmed. It was a great incentive but as soon as I got confirmed I spent far more time on my roller skates and church became a distant memory.
When I grew up and left home, I still didn’t see faith as a necessary part of my life, but I did notice the support it gave my mum. She would not expect or challenge my sister and I about our decisions not to include religion on our journey through life but she was comforted by knowing the seed had been sown.
Recently my middle daughter has returned from university and I have found myself asking her to do things (cleaning her room, making dinner for the family, walking the dog). This has become irritating to her and she said if I stop asking, she will do these things because she wants to not because she has been told to.
I found faith leading me to choose a school that still openly involved faith in their time table. I found faith taking me to a new church that did not question my beliefs but supported my family through Sunday schools and an open approach to encouraging more involvement to helping in Church.
Jesus spent his life by setting good examples. He didn’t tell people what to do he showed them how to live. Even when the disciples did not trust Jesus, he still had faith in them so whenever they wavered, he showed the light.
May be for some of us, because faith is a question rather than an answer we sit on the fence about its purpose. I just know in my heart I am better with my faith. I feel stronger mentally because I believe in God. I certainly feel I have less questions and more answers.
Perhaps stepping through our doors at Christ Church is a little too forward, but you can see our services on our Facebook page and this might just sow the first seed for your faith?

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE
Politics, politics and more politics!
Politics have been dominating the headlines. No surprise there, because there has been a General Election campaign! By the time you get to read this you may have already registered your vote in the Community Centre; it might be all over and we will all know the result.
In the past few weeks, many of us may have resorted to avoidance tactics. Because, if we are honest we have felt supremely under-qualified to make a decision about who to vote for, and bemused by all the claims in the manifestos.
Whether we have loved all the election coverage, or wished we could have fast forwarded through the whole process, it is a privilege and a responsibility to have the right to vote. Decisions are made by those who turn up! For followers of Jesus, it is a way in which we join in his work of saving us from all our mistakes, trusting that there will be government that reflects his passion for us doing things
voteright, and enabling those around us to flourish. That means we have needed to get informed, thinking wisely and praying about which issues and policies will direct our votes.
What God cares about is what we should care about. And his priorities are above left-versus-right party politics. He commands us all to ‘work’ and ‘take care’ of the land; to ‘administer true justice’; ‘show mercy and compassion’; and to ‘not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the foreigner, or the poor’ as the Bible puts it.
People will have needed to think about these issues.
Which policies will best align with God’s desire for us to celebrate good, punish evil, pursue peace, and to protect the oppressed? And which leaders would we be wise to follow?
We may have engaged in conversations about the election with neighbours, friends, colleagues, and family members – some of whom will have reached different conclusions to us about where they will cast their vote. Hopefully every conversation will have been seasoned with good grace, avoiding tribalism, and have been open to hearing the perspectives of others. Following Christ’s teachings, there is no place for bad tempered arguments with your mates!
Let us pray for the new government of whatever colour – for wisdom in decision making, for stability in our land, for good and honest governance, and policies and actions that enable us all to flourish and grow.

THE 19TH HOLE
BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH
Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching
Welcome back to the 19th hole, Well the US OPEN didn’t disappoint did it? What a week it was at Pinehurst, an amazing finish that came down to the final hole of the competition. A moment of heartbreak for Rory but ecstasy for Bryson… what an amazing bunker shot under the most intense pressure!
This month we move onto yet another major and the final chance for glory in 2024. The Open Championship this year is being held at Royal Troon.
Royal Troon’s Old Course was founded in 1878, expanded to 18 holes 10 years later and re-designed by five-time Champion Golfer James Braid ahead of its first Open in 1923. It will host its 10th Open this year.
My pick for THE OPEN is… RORY MCILROY.
I think Pinehurst will make him fight for the next major title even more!
COACHES CORNER – THE PERFECT FAIRWAY WOOD
This month’s coaches corner looks at the perfect set up and playing of the fairway wood shots. If this is an area of your game that isn’t as strong as it could be then lets, see what we can do to help.
First let’s talk about expectations with this club, it is for most people the second longest club they carry. This makes it harder to control than most, now factor in that you will need to strike it from the ground at times and we have a difficult shot.
However, after speaking to a number of players we feel that they are trying to be too accurate with this shot.
Let’s set the expectations at the width of the hole you are playing and be happy with the distance we receive from using this club. Remember most of the time we are using this shot for the distance it brings us.
SET UP for success with this shot, the set up of the body is going to be more like the driver. Slight
more upright in your stance due the length of the club and with an in balance through the shoulders due to the ball position.
BALL POSITION, this will be different for different players. Make a few practice swings and see where YOUR swing brushes the ground. Then play the ball from this position, we would in courage you to have the ball towards your lead foot but by how much is personal to YOUR swing.
DRILL, once we are set up for success then we need to practice this action to gain confidence in it. A simple drill (seen in image) that allows you to practice without going to the range, just strike the tee pegs that are laying on the ground. They are low in profile and if you are striking them every time there is no reason why this fairway wood shot should now become a shot you play more.
If you are struggling with this or any other aspect of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this great game more.
