Welcome to the June issue

Summer is finally here this month! And Summer 2024 is absolutely jam-packed full of sport!

First up, a biggie for football fans... The Euros! Even non-football fans can find themselves wrapped up in the patriotism of the England football team if they do even slightly well... Is it coming home this year? I’m sure we’ll all be singing that familiar tune over and over again either way!

If you’re looking for somewhere to watch the matches, the Moreton Hall Community Centre is a great place to soak up the atmosphere. You do need tickets for the England games though, and these are available to members only. So if you’ve not joined up yet, now is the time! Find out more on page 17.

Wimbledon follows shortly after, and then kicking off in July, the Summer Olympics! What a Summer of sport?

We had a record-breaking amount of entries to the competition we ran in the April issue to win a family ticket to The South Suffolk. The lucky winner drawn from all the entries was Caroline Bowman. We hope they enjoyed their prize!

We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care, and we’ll see you in July!

What a difference a shoe makes

With summer approaching and a change of the temperature we all go through our wardrobes, sometimes attics and spare rooms to sort our clothing and shoes. Imagine you only have one pair of shoes.

One of our guests did sleep rough for over two years. His complex issues made housing difficult and sleeping in parks and woodland mixed with sofa surfing was for a long time the only possible option.

Our volunteers welcomed him in all that time with compassion and kindness on days of severe mental health struggles, frustration with services, disappointment in his own actions and on good days.

One winter day his only pair of shoes broke, wet and cold feet were making him feel low. Thanks to our donations and

funding we are in the privileged position to help our guests immediately and purchased a pair of new waterproof outdoor shoes,

Feeling valued, understood, and supported created opportunity of change and our guest has just moved into suitable accommodation.

Sleeping in a safe and warm space has already resulted in visible changes and step by step health issues will be addressed.

As many times before the general change in appearance and body language is so noticeable, after a couple of

nights in a safe space and easy access to water and food.

Summer is as dangerous as winter, we are preparing with sun protection, refillable water bottles, and hats. Please do keep our guests in your prayers, join our volunteer team or donate. We have launched a new fundraising platform in a bid to boost regular giving, featuring options including regular giving as well as one-off, default amounts detailing what the donation can be used for and checkout without the need to create an account.

THE CATHEDRAL ART CLUB

The Cathedral Art Club is a small group of local amateur artists who meet weekly to enjoy the opportunity of getting together and pursue their artistic skills. This Art Club has been running since late 1980 and has a membership of 40. The aim of the art club

is to provide a weekly social event and enable members to participate in local annual events in the Cathedral. During the course of the year they have demonstrations and workshops, occasionally by professional artists and club members and also make visits

to museums, art galleries and other places of interest. An annual art exhibition is held in the Cathedral in the summer and the club also donates paintings and crafts to the St Edmundsbury Christmas Market each year. During the year the art club donates a room hire fee to the Cathedral and the proceeds from their Christmas Market stall are also donated to the Cathedral funds.

The Art Club meets every Monday in the Edmund Room in St Edmundsbury Cathedral. If you would like to know more or join the club, please contact 07508 520813.

The Cathedral Art Clubs’ Annual Art Exhibition will be held in the Cathedral from 2nd August through to 11th August inclusive. Open from 10.00 - 16.00 daily.

FUN DAY A GREAT SUCCESSYET AGAIN

Several hundred people flocked on to Hardwick School field on a rain free day to have a great time with free fun and entertainment.

Proceedings started with the unique Year 1 football tournament with six teams participating and a home win clocked up. There was a lot more to enjoy with loads of free inflatables - the bucking bull was the most unusual - and the ever popular Abbeycroft climbing wall. Southgate Church provided the refreshments as well as puppet shows, games and a tuck shop. FOHPS ran several stalls to raise funds for the School. “We made most of the attractions free this year to give everyone a great day out” commented Andy Abbott, Chair of Southgate Community Partnership, organisers of the event. “We aim to be back next year!” Our photo montage opposite captures the fun of the day.

COACH TRIP TO LONDON

The trip to London last month was a phenomenal success with 145 people travelling in two coaches. All reported having a great time at a bargain price. Our next trip is planned for Saturday 19th October with booking opening in August. See details on our pages in the Directory.

SOUTHGATE CHURCH CELEBRATES 50 YEARS

Since its opening in 1976, Southgate Church has always had its home in the Community Centre, starting in its own modest room and moving its services to the Main Hall when its congregation grew greatly.

It started life with Sunday schools in Hardwick Primary but recognised as a fully fledged church after its first morning service on Whit Sunday in 1974. On 19 May, Pentecost Sunday, it celebrated 50 years by holding a special service in the Community Centre with over 150 people from all over the country attending, with most of those staying for a lovely lunch.

Our first full time minister, Jonathan Edwards, returned to give an inspiring address and representatives from other local churches bringing their greetings. The Church continues to be delighted to have as its building the Community Centre and to share its facilities with all the other groups serving our community. See pages 58-59 for more information.

My WiSH Charity caring for you and your baby

As a hospital charity we support all areas and aspects of care that you may need from the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. This includes maternity services right from the moment you conceive.

On average, the maternity unit deliver around 2,500 babies a year, which is an incredible number we are sure you will agree.

Our support for the maternity team starts early on by providing DVD players, projectors, and screens to help teach new parents about pregnancy and birth at their parentcraft classes.

We also provide distraction tools, such as stress balls and twiddle toys, to help should someone need support to quit smoking during their pregnancy. When it’s time to birth your

Infographic courtesy of WSFT Maternity

baby you will find eight rooms on the labour suite and four midwifery-led birthing rooms which include three birthing pools for those wanting to use the water for pain relief or to have a water birth.

We are so pleased to have recently added to the rooms to help create a calm and beautiful birthing environment. This includes projectors to create mood lighting around the room, sound bars to play the music

of their choice and patterned vinyl wall coverings to ensure a serene space.

We also bought 12 TENS machines to help with pain relief, in early labour.

When you have had your baby, especially if you have had a caesarean, you may well use one of the special cots we provided. These slide over the bed and tilt so mum and baby can stay connected.

@mywishcharity mywishcharity Find out more about My WiSH Charity at www.mywishcharity.co.uk

Thanks to a legacy we were also able to buy a specialist twin cot - after all, they’ve been together for a lot of months so it’s lovely to continue that bond.

Having a baby should be a great time of joy, but sadly, this is not always the case. Back in 2016 we provided a suite away from the ward where women can have their baby with space for loved ones and much-needed privacy. The suite has its own bathroom and kitchenette. The family can spend precious time with their baby using a special cuddle cot to allow them to be together longer.

We have also refurbished a room to provide a nonclinical area where difficult conversations can take place and we work closely with ward F14 to help them support their patients.

We also worked with the bereavement midwife to provide memory boxes. These boxes contain print kits,

a blanket, a glass angel, amongst other items to capture precious memories and moments. We appreciate that this is one of the hardest moments in someone’s life and we hope these boxes are a source of comfort at such a difficult time.

You might find yourself or your baby needing a little extra care post birth. Our fantastic neonatal unit is there to help. Over the years we’ve provided many pieces of equipment for the unit from specialist cots, to a £30,000 cerebral function monitor. We also pay for a system called vCreate which allows the parent and baby to stay connected. The staff can send video clips or photos, so parents don’t miss those crucial moments should they need to leave the neonatal unit.

We were lucky to receive a fantastic donation last year that has allowed us to help the staff create a transitional care bay on the postnatal ward. This five-bedded bay has home from home bedspreads with matching ones for the cot, and beautiful vinyl stickers on the wall to make it a comfortable space should they, or their baby, need a few extra days of care.

Back to the birthing area of the unit. We have just bought some toasters to provide that much needed snack post birth,

it’s probably the best slice of toast they will ever have! We work closely with the team and, thanks to our generous donors, we are here to help them enhance the amazing care they already give. They are passionate about looking after you all the way through your pregnancy and we love to be able to help them with this role.

The maternity unit has a Facebook, @WestSuffolkMaternity and Instagram page, @wsftmaternity. Do give them follow for advice for advice during and after your pregnancy. There are lots of videos and photos on their page giving you a real insight to the team and the unit.

Finally, we continue to care for your child right through their life should they need to use the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. From the emergency department, to the Rainbow ward, to specialist departments in the hospital, health centres and at home, our WiSH Upon A Star Children’s Appeal will care for your baby as they grow. After all, My WiSH Charity are here to enhance care for you, your family, for life.

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School

This month we celebrate something truly amazing that thrilled and enchanted audiences at Hardwick... The Lower Key Stage 2 production of Dragon Days was a rip-roaring “Clawsome Scorcher of a Musical” that was

hugely entertaining and the children from Badgers and Owls must be congratulated for their hard work and spirited performances. How the energetic Miss Weller-Poley, the LKJS2 team, and pupils managed to stage such an

amazing production is inspiring, the singing raised the roof and the solo’s provided truly goosebump moments. A brilliant show and special thanks for the support of parents and providing costumes and encouragement.

Need more from your existing solar installation?

If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system

The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours.

A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it.

If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage.

Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.

Why choose Generate + Store?

• Local business for 20+ years

• NICEIC and MCS accredited

• 95% of customers recommend friends & family

• Full end-to-end service with great customer support

GIVING A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

LSS’s meetings offer support to patients, and their partners, by meeting with others who understand about living with and managing the same or similar lifelong chronic health conditions.

Sharing information, learning new skills and tips can help to boost self esteem, reduce anxiety and help with overall sense of well being. LSS’s meetings have varied guest speakers to help patients by

giving a different perspective on managing their conditions, ideas to try and also helping patients to take control of how they do this. Taking small steps and making small adjustments can make all the difference and be rewarding too.

EXERCISE IS GOOD FOR YOU…!

Exercise plays an important part in coping with living with Lymphoedema and Lipodema and with the health maintenance of these chronic conditions.

It doesn’t have to be marathon running or mountain climbing - doing housework and gardening count as exercise!

However you exercise the important thing is to do it regularly, so Keep Moving. Doing Simple Lymphatic Drainage (SLD) massages

A support group is a supportive network where you can share personal experiences and offer one another emotional comfort and moral support. Somewhere you can feel less lonely, isolated and judged, giving you a sense of empowerment and control.

A place where you can talk openly and honestly about your feelings, developing a clearer understanding, improving your coping skills and sense of adjustment.

Take a step forward to improve your wellbeing and come along and join us to see what we are all about. Make friends with people in a similar position as you. Think about what you would like to

achieve from becoming a member of the group and the type of support needed.

The warmth and the long sunny, lighter days are most welcome and all too soon the Summer Solstice will be upon us marking the longest day. Enjoy being uplifted, take pleasure in the beauty of colour in abundance, dip your toes in opportunities, always being mindful of your own abilities and daily regimes.

Speakers welcomed this year have been interesting, fun, interactive, factual and informative. Our programme is always a variable mix so if you have something you feel would be of interest please get in contact.

Homemade Beef Burgers

It’s BBQ season! Why not try these delicious homemade burgers?

Ingredients:

• 1 small onion, diced

• 500g good-quality beef mince

• 1 egg

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil

• 4 burger buns

• All or any of the following to serve: sliced tomato, beetroot, horseradish sauce, mayonnaise, ketchup, handful iceberg lettuce, rocket, watercress

Method:

1. Tip 500g beef mince into a bowl with 1 small diced onion and 1 egg, then mix.

2. Divide the mixture into four. Lightly wet your hands. Carefully roll the mixture into balls x 4.

3. Set in the palm of your hand and gently squeeze down to flatten into patties about 3cm thick. Make sure all the burgers are the same thickness so that they will cook evenly.

4. Put on a plate, cover with cling film and leave in the fridge to firm up for at least 30 mins.

5. Heat the barbecue to medium hot. Lightly brush one side of each burger with vegetable oil.

6. Place the burgers, oil-side down, on the

barbecue. Cook for 5 mins until the meat is lightly charred. Don’t move them around or they may stick.

7. Oil the other side, then turn over using tongs.

8. Cook for 5 mins more for medium. If you like your burgers pink in the middle, cook 1 min less each side. For well done, cook 1 min more.

9. Take the burgers off the barbecue. Leave to rest on a plate so that all the juices can settle inside.

10. Slice four burger buns in half. Place, cut-side down, on the barbecue rack and toast for 1 min until they are lightly charred. Place a burger inside each bun, then top as you like!

– SPRING HAS SPRUNG –

The Spring Equinox occurs when days and nights are more or less equal lengths and it signals the first day of Spring.

As I write it certainly feels spring-like and a welcome break from all that rain! We are seeing sure signs all around us in the meadows now. The first insects are emerging starting with bumble bees. They are particularly large at this time of year, being all female (queens) looking for places to make their nests after their long hibernation in the ground. Of our 24 native UK species, six of them are cuckoo bees and very like the bird equivalent, look for nests of their host bumblebee to lay their eggs in. We have already seen a Southern cuckoo bumble bee and her host, the buff-tailed bumble bee nearby.

We know we have these species as 12 recorders who go out on a regular basis walking the meadows looking for creatures and plants to record. Recently a tree creeper pair has been spotted; a kingfisher fishing the newly created water vole habitat at No Man’s Meadows and several spring butterflies such comma, peacock and red admiral. The prize record was captured by trailcam on the banks of the lark; the endangered water vole which now has a new habitat created with the help of Suffolk Wildlife Trust. Many spring flowers are coming into flower such as early Persian speedwell, celandine

yellow bells.

A more formal way to study ecology of an area is carrying out a transect. This is a long-term study of the distribution and abundance of an organism along a set route for a set time. We only carry out one transect in the water meadows for butterflies. Butterflies found earlier or later are captured by our Bio recorders and they are flying more and more outside the standard parameters, due to climate change.

However a great way to get public and children in particular, involved in learning about Nature, is a BioBlitz. This is a concentrated effort to find as many species as possible over a 24-hour period in a given area. A stocktake of living species if you like. A staggering 550 species have been recording in previous years and we hope to build on that when the results come in.

The context for our surveying and the Bioblitzes, is that the earth is

www.burywatermeadowsgroup.org.uk

losing its biodiversity at rates not seen since the dinosaurs roamed prehistoric forests and grasslands. We are facing twin emergencies of runaway climate warming and biodiversity loss. One in 7 species is at risk of extinction in the next 5 to 10 years in the UK. Many bold efforts are taking place to halt this trend such as large rewilding and regenerative projects by farmers and landowners, but house building and habitat destruction continue apace and targets are frequently missed at both national and international levels.

At a community level we want to understand what is being lost and the only way to do that is to discover what we have.

A Town Council grant means we can run BioBlitzes for a few years and we plan to do so. This will boost our biodiversity monitoring work but just as importantly, is a great way of engaging with schools and the public about the beauty and infinite variety of Bury’s natural environment.

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum

Welcome to our June ‘View from the tower’

The season has got off to a ‘Flying Start’ (even without the airfield). Six weeks in and the attendance has been fantastic – 150+, 60+, 200+ and 60+ … now over 700 visitors – what a start. You are helping our numbers increase dramatically – thank you and please keep coming.

From the Chairman:

“What a great first day!! 150 visitors through the gates, many, many thanks to the public, reenactors and volunteers for making the start of the 2024 season a brilliant success. The weather held off until the early afternoon when the showers started.

The new displays have worked, although we still have many more photos and labels to put up. Plans were worked on for “Echoes” on 7th July so watch this space. Wendy and the ladies worked non-stop all day in the Tea Room. All five large cakes where eaten with gusto. We will all be back to do it every Sunday.

Thanks again to you all for keeping this important piece of Suffolk history alive.”

Graham Sage - RTA Chairman/ volunteer.

Graham has mentioned the reenactors but thanks also go to the Car Owners Clubs, Bury and Alvis just to mention two, who have met at the Museum, enjoying the delights from the tearoom – bacon roll’s and cake are very popular.

Keeping the reenactor theme, we welcome a group from the Netherlands who are visiting to commemorate the D-Day events. They arrive on the 2nd June and will be in the area until the 9th, travelling in their jeeps, to other locations including Duxford.

We continue with visits from the US families and relatives. Currently 9 groups have enjoyed our hospitality, with another 6 booked in the near future.

Just an example of the items in the museum – the ‘Going Back in Time’ picture shows a few items (My Granny had a cupboard like this!). Other exhibit areas are being

developed and modified. Thanks go to Jan and Kev for the Victory Garden, together with Paul and Bob working on the ‘Gate Guard Gun Pit’.

Graham has also mentioned our ‘Big Event – Echoes of the Past’. Please come to this fabulous event, all very welcome. The date SUNDAY 7th July – a must in your diary! (More details next month).

There are plenty of ‘jobs’ and projects that you can become involved in. Small contributions, even if only once a month, all help. We are also always looking for items relating to the airfield, museum or town which we can display. Aviation books, photographs, models (including Corgi or Dinky vehicles) can generate valuable income to sustain the displays and facilities. Again, please can you help.

See you again next month in July, here in The Directory.

BURY ST EDMUNDS CRICKET CLUB

Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club have made a good start to the season the 1st team have won 4 of their first 5 games and a full programme of Saturday & Sunday adult games are taking place. Plus many junior matches and already some outstanding performances at all levels, in particular Alex Maynard scoring 118 from just 96 deliveries against Sudbury his opening partnership with Nikethan Radhakrishan resulting in cricket balls being dispatched out of the ground. The first 150 runs came in 90 minutes off just 20.2 overs.

Several junior players have produced outstanding figures, Oscar Grove, 4 wickets for

3 runs in an under 11 game and Max Ellis, 4 wickets for 6 runs in an under 13 match.

Cricket is as much about the people involved and last Saturday John Williams was guest of honour at a lunch during the game against Sudbury. John has been involved with the club for a very long time as player, scorer and representative of the ground during its transition to being owned by the Community Interest Company that now owns the freehold.

John very kindly provided the funding for the scorebox which overlooks both cricket

grounds and from its elevated view provides a superb view of the games. Scorers are often not fully appreciated but in our case John Williams has become a legendary figure at the club, he is moving away to be nearer his close family and we owe him a great debt of gratitude.

FOOD AND CARBON

When I started this adventure 9 years ago to help people save money and reduce their carbon footprint, the world was a very different place. This also goes for our production of greenhouse gases.

There has been a distinctive shift in emphasis of the sector which is responsible for the largest part of our individual carbon footprint. At the beginning, household energy sat right at the top, but in recent years with increasing renewable energy, reduced coal burning, more home insulation, more efficiency in our systems this has changed. Now food and drink has taken the top spot.

Factors from fertilisers to methane burped up by animals, food transportation, packaging and change of land use all come with a carbon price tag and this now adds up to a whopping 25% of our overall personal greenhouse gas emissions. Our food production is currently unsustainable.

In this article we will look at some of the ways we can save money and reduce our carbon footprint by changing a few food habits.

1. REDUCE WASTE

According to charity WRAP, each year as a nation we throw away 4.5 million tonnes of food from our own homes, a huge 70 percent of the total food that is wasted in the UK. This adds up to about 830kg CO₂e per household per year, and in monetary terms about £470.

If you want to see ways to reduce this waste, there are dozens of suggestions on the Ecofrenzy web-site under ‘Food and Shopping’

2. MOVE TO A PLANT-BASED DIET

This means replacing most of the meat and dairy we eat with plant-based alternatives which are lower in overall emissions. The table below comes from data put together by Mike Berners Lee, he intends the figures to be a rough guide, as all food supply chains are different and the knowledge is “far from certain”, however you can see the huge difference of Kg Co₂e per Kg food between the dairy and meat food items compared to the plant based food items.

dairy

3. KNOW WHEN FOOD IS IN SEASON

Many vegetables and fruits have a low carbon footprint, but check where they are grown and packaged before buying. Seasonal produce tends to create less greenhouse gas because it’s grown without artificial heat, and if it’s homegrown it doesn’t have to be shipped or – worse – flown in.

An example of this:

In season locally grown strawberries have a carbon footprint of 490g CO₂e per 250g. A punnet flown in from South

Are you a poet and you didn’t know it?

When was the last time you read or wrote a poem?

Recently I decided to venture under my middle daughter’s bed to make way for her suitcase, duvet, etc from university. I had great pleasure in discovering a poem my mum had written after the funeral of Princess Diana. It reminded me of school and the joy I got out of writing poetry. Today I may write a verse in a birthday card but otherwise I don’t think of poetry as a way to express my feelings, experiences, or creative mind.

When one of our church members kindly shared the poem you see on the right, it captured some of the incredible emotions we may all share in the simplest of quests.

In the Bible there are many stories of Jesus showing how sometimes the smallest of contributions can have a major effect. Jesus explains that it’s

not about lavish gestures but what you personally can give or do consistently. When we provide an offering bowl in our services it is incredible when the bowl is overflowing, but to run Christ Church it takes so much more than just money. Which is why all those people who give up their time to help from serving coffee and tea to emptying the bins are more than a valuable asset to the Church, they are following the teachings in the Bible.

What does this have to do with poetry? Sometimes the spoken word can have a profound effect on our lives. Using different forms of the spoken word can capture our imagination and help us through difficult times.

As you read this poem, I hope it will evoke emotions which bring a different way of looking at life and may even tempt you into expressing yourself through poetry. This may be to help

a friend or family member through a difficult time or just something to bring a smile to someone close.

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me

And I wake in the night at the least sound

In fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

Who do not task their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with the light.

For a time, I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Pray for everything!

During World War 2, the well-known Dutch Christian writer, Corrie Ten Boon, and her sister Betsie, were in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. One morning, Corrie woke with a streaming cold. If only I had a handkerchief, she thought… “Why don’t you pray for a hankie?” her sister said. “Don’t be ridiculous Betsie!”, Corrie replied. Thousands of people are being executed here each week, how can I pray for a hankie?” However, Betsie prayed there and then: “Father, Corrie has a bad cold, please send her a hankie”.

Corrie struggled on all that morning, laughing inwardly at Betsie’s ridiculous prayer. But then she heard a friend calling her name. “Here” said the woman, giving her a small package. Corrie opened it and her jaw dropped, because the parcel contained a handkerchief. “How did you know I needed a hankie?” she asked the woman “Did Betsie tell you?”. “No”, said the woman, “This morning they set me to work making handkerchiefs out of old sheets and a little voice in my heart told me that you needed one”.

This is an extraordinary story, isn’t it? Mainly because it’s miraculous. But also, because it resonates with the way many of us feel about praying for our personal situations. Sometimes praying for things that we need can seem rather selfish. Especially when we consider how people are suffering in the Ukraine and the Middle East. But this testimony illustrates that whilst we must continue to pray for those in conflictzones, it’s also important to keep praying about our daily needs.

Indeed, Jesus encouraged us to do so. When his disciples asked him to teach them how to pray, he taught them the Lord’s Prayer. And it contains the line ‘Give us today our daily bread’. Here, Jesus is encouraging us

to pray about our most basic needs. The day-to-day stuff that we can’t believe that God is interested in.

But the great thing is, that when we do, we so often receive answers to such prayers. Which at the time seem like little miracles. These build our faith in God and in prayer. They remind us, that like all great parents, God is interested in every detail of our lives.

This month, try praying about all the needs and challenges that you face. The answers you receive will remind you that your heavenly Father loves you and wants to be involved in every area of your life.

Over 150 people attended our special service held on Sunday 19 May to celebrate 50 years. We had lots of old friends who travelled from all parts of the country to be with us. It was a time to praise God for his faithfulness to us and look forward to the future of service to our local community. We had three of our minsters with us, and a fourth joining us on Zoom.

What the Butler Saw

Tuesday 25th - Saturday 29th June

Within the pristine walls of his private psychiatric clinic, Doctor Prentice is interviewing a new secretary. Geraldine wants the position but seems underqualified and uncertain about her parentage. Mrs Prentice appears, flushed and in urgent need of a drink, following an illicit encounter with Nick Beckett, blackmailer and bell boy at the Station Hotel. In the meantime, Doctor Rance, a Government Inspector and Sergeant Match, a policeman, arrive with searching questions of their own.

WHAT THE BUTLER SAW is Joe Orton’s final, most ambitious play.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back to the 19th hole, how are we already in June? Golf season is full flow now and this month we are looking forward to yet more great competitions including the US Open.

The professionals have been entertaining us with their play throughout May including a maiden major win for Xander at the US PGA. That win netting him a cool $3.3 million and the Wanamaker trophy.

June see’s the US Open return to an historic venue in PINEHURST. This resort is often thought about as one of the best venues on the planet, below we highlight this tournament here are other events on both tours this month.

This is the third major of the year and another chance to go down in golfing history as a major champion… will it be another first time winner or a return to form for one of the worlds best.

The US open as always will be a very tough test, the conditions are always the most challenging out of all of the majors in the calendar. There is a lot of history that has already been made at this venue but who will be next and perform well around this venue… well I sticking with the man I have backed in many of these predictions. MY PICK IS… Rory!!!!! (I am just going to keep picking him until it happens!).

COACHES CORNER – GREEN SIDE GREAT ESCAPE’S

This month we are going to focus on bunker play, now its at this time of year everyone longs to be on a beach somewhere warm. However, if you were to ask some golfers they would prefer to be anywhere but in the sand. So it’s time to change this, these few simple tips will allow you to approach bunkers with a lot more confidence and achieve better results.

Like so many shots in golf, you need to set up well. The image below shows you how to set up to escape, with a little practice this position will start to feel natural.

SET UP:

Ball positioned forward in the stance.

Feet aligned at or slightly left of the target.

Weight positioned 70% forward on lead foot. (left foot for right

handed golfer).

Club handle relaxed and pointing back towards your centre.

From this great set up position I would like you to focus on three main points:

TARGET

Draw a line in the sand and practice hitting that line over and over, when you can hit the line 4 times in row then you’re ready to put a ball down around 1 to 2 inches in front of the line and complete the same exercise.

SPEED

To get the ball out of most bunkers takes some force, so it’s essential to have speed going through the impact area of this shot. As you can see from the image, I have taken the club

If you are still struggling from bunkers after this, or any other part of your game then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this game more. As this should be the most important aspect for anyone’s round of golf.

back a good distance to ensure that I hit my target (the line) with some speed in the club head.

LOFT

Lastly, make sure you’re using enough loft to allow you to get out easily. Use a sand wedge or lob wedge and even on occasions open these clubs up as well to activate even more loft to be used while playing this shot.
