hello...

Directory Moreton Hall

…and welcome to the April edition of the Moreton Hall Directory. Hello again! It only seems like yesterday I was writing this for the March issue, time is flying by! Hope you are all enjoying the Easter break. With the kids off school, turn to page 22 for another crossword and wordsearch to get their brains working a little before they go off and play outside... in the sunshine... I hope. Come on Spring, you are running very late this year. If you fancy getting fit for FREE turn to page 57, where there is an offer to try Nordic Walking for free. It sounds like a fantastic idea to get people out and socialising whilst exercising. Or you could try a game of Bowls for free, Risbygate Bowls are offering FREE games on May 13th, 20th and 27th, so if you’ve ever fancied giving it a go, give them a call.

See you next month when we will be celebrating our amazing 100th issue with a revamp, so if you have any ideas on how to make the MHD bigger and better, just email me with your thoughts and we will take them on board. SCHOOL LITTER PICK

Sebert Wood Primary School took part in a litter pick organised by Cllr Terry Buckle, they did a sterling job on what was a very cold day. They collected a large amount of rubbish from around their school area, many thanks to the headmaster and teachers who supported this event. Of course by the time this issue comes out we will have completed our big spring clean up, I would like to thank all those who took part in it.

Cllr Trevor Beckwith Trevor suffered a second heart attack and had to undergo surgery, happy to say he is home now and on the mend, we wish him a speedy recovery.

DRUGS It has been a bad month regarding drugs and drug related incidents both on the Estate and some of our schools. Three weeks ago there was a drug raid on a house on the estate, where arrests were made. I was also approached by the manager of Tesco complaining about someone dealing drugs at the back of her shop. She feared for her staff safety. The police are aware and are dealing with this and hopefully will get things sorted. You can help, if you see anything or know anything please get in touch with me or the police, we would appreciate it.

PARKING

SYMONDS ROAD I have had a complaint from a lady about the large Tesco lorry which uses Symonds Road as a short cut to the A14, I have spoken to the manager and she confirmed that one of the relief drivers does this and he has been warned. If you see any HGV’S using the road again let us know.

Parking around Lawson Place has eased a little, some of the staff have started using the park on the old community site, we are still waiting for lights to be erected on the site. I will check with the borough council and keep you updated. Some staff will not use it because it is too dark when they finish work. Hopefully the lighter nights will solve this problem

Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways

14

Institutionalisation of Nature

Join us at Woodland Ways

We have less access to the countryside than our parents had when they were young. Our children have less access to the countryside than when we were children. The reasons are many, from town enlargements meaning that more people are distant from the edge of the countryside, to increasing fears about being lost, kidnapped or attacked. The effects of this separation from countryside is that our children now spend long times indoors. Symptoms of poor use of the countryside include electronic communication with friends, or playing electronic games.

Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. For more information please see www. woodlandways.org.uk, see the Woodland Ways noticeboard in the Community Centre, contact Nick Sibbett on 01284 723847 or email information@woodlandways. org.uk.

As a response, many organisations try to provide more access. Large parks, such as Nowton Park orm Ickworth, requiring a car journey, become places to be dragged around at parent’s speed. Many nature organisations run activities for schools, with places like Lackford Lakes or Bradfield Woods being popular destinations for classes. This, though, teaches children that

themhd

the countryside is an outdoor classroom, to be visited with teachers and where they are guided to do what the adults want; they are not for independent play. Children remain separate from the countryside of their parents and grandparents where one could play unguided and free of adult influence, free to get muddy, free to discover what’s fun and interesting, and free to learn from mistakes. The small areas of countryside which were stranded in Moreton Hall as it developed around them are for children as much as for the adults who walk through. Natterer’s Wood, Home Covert and Pond Covertare open for play. We should be tolerant of temporary den construction, children running loose, children jumping in puddles or waving sticks around. Independent play without an adult provides happiness and love for the countryside which may remain forever.

Whats been happening at...

Abbots Green Community Primary School We’ve been rolling up our sleeves and getting creative at Abbots Green this month! Armed with sheep’s wool and bubble wrap, the children in Daffodil Class have been designing and making their own felt. The children thought very hard about their designs before they started the process. Chelsea said “I’ll make a bus!” Once they were clear on their design they were eager to get started by placing a layer of combed wool onto a piece of bubble wrap. “We need two layers” instructed Rocco and so to complete the base for their felt design they placed a second layer of combed wool the other way.

Next they used coloured wool on top of the combed wool to lay out their design. “I’ve done an aeroplane” said Ben adding “I used red, grey and blue wool” Having created their picture they then carefully covered it all in hot soapy water. Then it was time to fuse the fibres and so the children placed another piece of bubble wrap over the wools and with their soapy hands they rubbed and rubbed the design. Eventually, after a lot of hard work their piece of felt was complete and the results were extremely effective. When asked if the class enjoyed making felt, Spencer said “I really enjoyed it!” Levi added “We used soap and we rubbed it.” Finally Rocco reflected on his design “It’s a bus, it has 4 wheels...and it’s good!”

Christ Church Moreton Hall The celebration of Easter reminds us that nothing is impossible for God. The account of the resurrection and ascension of Jesus is not a myth or carefully made up story; it is something that happened and the people who saw it were able to touch and talk to Jesus. The experience of it completely transformed their lives. This is the Good News - that life does not end in death; there is a place for us in heaven; and we can be set free from everything that is wrong and bad in our lives simply by turning to Jesus, believing in Him, asking Him into our lives and following Him daily. It is this message which has given hope to billions of people and is the centrepiece of all that we celebrate and is good about Christianity.

Terry for all the years of faithful service and dedicated hard work he has given to the people of this area. While the office of Mayor is largely ceremonial, it does nonetheless raise the profile of the community which the Councillor represents and of course the whole of West Suffolk.

There is even more good news for Moreton Hall this year. Councillor Terry Buckle, supported by his wife Pam, will be the Mayor of St. Edmundsbury for the next twelve months. This is a high honour. It is good to know that the political leaders of our town have come together to reward

Any person who engages in community work, particularly risks the slings and arrows of what passes for press coverage these days, deserve all our prayers and support. Putting your head above the parapet and attempting to do good will always attract unfair criticism

16

themhd

Terry has very kindly invited me to be his Chaplain which is a great honour and we will welcome him and the whole neighbourhood to Christ Church for his Civic Service and for his Mayor’s Carol Service during the course of this year. I do hope the whole estate will be able to support Terry on these occasions and throughout his whole mayoralty.

and unpleasant personal remarks. I have never understood why this is, as we are so short of people who want to serve the public. Terry has worked hard for us and his lasting legacy will, of course, be the community centre which, while he is no longer directly involved, is a testimony to the unique contribution he has made to the estate over the years. So, there are two stories of good news. One about the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the other about the way our area has been honoured this year. Both these stories are something we can take pride in. Both these stories have the potential to make a big difference to all our lives. The most important thing is to join in, celebrate the life and work of our local Councillor, but also to celebrate the life and work of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2013 could be a year when we come together in a new and wonderful way as a community – don’t miss out. With every good wish, Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford.

Just Tweet Me! by Andrew Southwood

I

have just become a typically belated member of the ‘latest’ (ok – so it may have started in 2006) online social media. Yes, I came to realise that it was no good ignoring it anymore, I was going to have to join the Twitter community. Clearly, having kids and a mortgage makes me technically far too old for this kind of forum, but what the heck – 500 million other users can’t all be wrong, can they? It’s probably been about 6 or 7 years since I started with my very first outings onto social networking sites. Since then, I think my life and friends (real life friends, not virtual, you understand) have now become almost so intertwined in facebook (fb) that to leave it would essentially be to lose contact with dozens of people. Most of these I would miss, although clearly some of

18

themhd

the more obscure ‘friends’ are pretty expendable to be honest. A year or so ago I was arranging an annual gathering of some old friends, and it occurred to me that I didn’t actually know half of their email addresses anymore, so reliant had we become on fb. This made me feel rather uncomfortable, and I made a special effort to try and encourage people to use old fashioned email as a form of group interaction. It worked, kind of…, briefly…, but people just love the accessibility of fb and such like. It’s a very clever marketing ploy and a tricky one to argue against. I have read about other people, social networking addicts, in far deeper than me, who have ‘given up’ for a month to see what happens. It seems that the world does continue to spin, and the mundane day to day rituals of life do not stop. One person

explained how they received far more normal texts and calls (even some to his landline – remember them?) as a result. However, you do run the risk of being left out of the loop, and no one enjoys that feeling. Without fb and twitter I would I’m sure have no idea what my old house mate from uni ate for dinner last night, or what my friends brothers kids did at the weekend. On the other hand I would probably have made a few more phone calls, and even visits to my true friends scattered about the country. This is perhaps the irony of good online social networking. It makes us lazy at the very thing we should enjoy doing – socializing. Oh well, that’s the age of smartphones for you. Nevermind eh, #ifyoucantbeatthemjointhem @atsouthwood. S

Featuring old time favourites including: a craft marquee; a food hall; trade stands; vintage farm machinery; classic cars; children’s entertainments; a ‘Gardener’s Delight’ area; and cattle, sheep, pig, donkey and horse classes. ‘The Kangarooo Kid’ from Australia’s Gold Coast will be debuting his UK tour in The South Suffolk Show’s Grand Ring after a 4 year break from his famous quad bike stunt show, - treating us to a set of new tricks and introducing his son to UK audiences for the first time.

Back by popular demand are ‘Eagle Heights Falconry Display Team’, the ‘East Anglian Terrier Club’ and the ‘Suffolk Gundog Club’. We are pleased to announce Mr Andrew Brown of Hardwick Farms as Show President this year, a loyal supporter of the show for many years, competing in the cattle showing classes at the South Suffolk since 2005. We hope that Mr Brown enjoys experiencing the show from a different aspect. Chairman of the South Suffolk Agricultural Association Ltd, Jim Mann says: “After a difficult year for agricultural shows last year, with the weather of 2012 causing a number of cancellations, we hope that the South Suffolk will kick off a more successful show season to a very positive start.”

DRIVE VAUXHALL RAISES £1000 FOR COMIC RELIEF Local dealer, Drive Vauxhall, is delighted to announce that its innovative ‘Where’s ADAM?’ campaign raised over a staggering £1000 for Comic Relief. In a bid to raise as much money as possible, the local dealership placed stickers of the ADAM, the brand new urban-chic city car from Vauxhall, around the town centres of Haverhill and Bury St Edmunds last week and asked the locals to send a picture of themselves with the stickers to the retailer. For every snap the retailer received, £1 was donated to Red Nose Day. In addition, the staff at Drive Vauxhall also did their bit and donned fancy dress for the day! What’s more, they jumped on the ‘Harlem shake’ bandwagon and created their very own video for Comic Relief. This will shortly be uploaded to YouTube and the Drive Bury St Edmunds Facebook page (Facebook.com/DriveVauxhall), so locals can see Drive Vauxhall doing something funny for money! Sarah Ferrari, Market Area General Manager at Drive Vauxhall, comments: “We are delighted with the amount we have raised for Comic Relief and would like to thank the local people of Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill for their support and contributions. The campaign has been a huge success and it gives us great pleasure to know that we are making a difference to people’s lives.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to those people in particular who sent in photographs of themselves with the hidden stickers and encourage them to check out their images on the Drive Bury St Edmunds Facebook page for people to ‘like’ and share with friends. We have had so much fun raising money for Comic Relief and we look forward to our future charity events.” The star of the creative campaign, the Vauxhall ADAM, has now arrived in showrooms for customers to come and see. Gardening Tips by Paul Clarke

Welcome to Gardening Tips a monthly feature providing you with hints and ideas of what to do each month in your garden. Along with a list of jobs that will enable you to enjoy and maintain your garden I will also feature a plant of the month. I have been a gardener for many years and run a small business called Pauls Garden Services.

What to do in your garden in April Here’s hoping for a better April than last year with more sunshine and less rain. Though there is always the possibility of frosts in April so avoid the temptation of planting tender bedding and patio plants too soon. The name April comes from the the latin word Aperio meaning to open or bud. Tulips, daffodils , camellias, magnolias and azaleas should all be in full bloom in our gardens. If you fancy a journey out why not visit Flatford Mill for the RHS National Gardening week from April 15-21st. There is a tour of the RSPB wildlife garden and you can learn how to make your own garden more wildlife friendly. There will also be advice on sustainable gardening, and a plant propagating session.

Pauls Jobs for the Month Give your borders a spring clean l There is still time to tidy your garden. Start at the back of a border and fork out weeds and remove any dead stems from perennial plants. After loosening the soil if you have any garden compost, manure or bark chippings now is the time to apply a 2 inch layer Lawns l Once you have mowed the lawns once or twice you will probably notice if the lawn has a moss problem or has bare patches. There are two choices with moss, if you don’t like using chemicals use a wire rake to remove. Otherwise use a granular weed and feed product to tackle the moss. l Don’t leave bare patches in your lawn as this will soon be filled by weeds. Instead apply some grass seed. Planting Vegetables l When the weather is mild now is the time to sow broad beans, brussel sprouts, early peas, beetroot, radish, turnips and spinach, carrots and onions. The difficulty is making the choice! To avoid build up of pests and diseases try to avoid growing the same crop in the same part of the garden each year so rotate. l Remember to soak your seeds for 24 hours before planting in a bowl of warm water. Remove and allow to dry on a kitchen towel. This method should help early germination. l Plant first early potatoes. They like lots of sunshine and lots of water. l You can now plant asparagus crowns. Fruit l If you have space plant an area with strawberries this month. Fork in plenty of well rotted manure as you can. Plant strawberries with their crowns slightly above the ground 12inches apart and 18 inches between rows l It is a good idea to mulch around fruit trees and bushes in April, provided the ground is not bone dry when you do it. Use well-rotted manure or garden compost and spread it liberally round all fruit trees

Instead of a formal meeting with specific speakers we have decided to have a drop in style of meeting. Members of the committee will be on hand but we are hoping to attract local businesses and organisations including potential developers to take part. This would take the form of manned presentation stands providing information relevant to residents. Although we expect interest to be on development issues we are also wanting matters of general community issues to be raised. Apart from enabling residents to obtain information we also want to learn more of residents concerns and if we cannot suggest an immediate response we will undertake to take all reasonable efforts to obtain a response. Our wish is that as many organisations as possible will take part and as many residents as possible will drop in on the evening if only for a few minutes. We are approaching a wide range of organisations but if you do not receive an invitation but would like to take part please contact the chairman by email mhrachairman@ talktalk.net

Recipe of the month

Double Chocolate SHORTBREADS

You’re only five ingredients away from a double chocolate melt-in-your-mouth delight... Ingredients

Method

175g butter , softened

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL

PG

Director: Sam Raimi Starring: James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams It’s time to follow the Yellow Brick Road once more as we return to Oz for this spectacular prequel! First released in 1939, The Wizard of Oz is a cinematic masterpiece, beloved by millions around the world. Now Spider-man director Sam Raimi ventures back in time and shows us where the eponymous wizard came from. The story begins with smalltime circus magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) - a man who aspires to greater things. One day, his air balloon is suddenly swept inside a raging, violent tornado and whisked away to the weird and wonderful world of Oz. He then meets three witches - Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams) - who are convinced that he is the saviour everyone has been waiting for. Is Oscar indeed destined to become the fabled Wizard of Oz - one who can save the land from great evil? Filled with Raimi’s boundless energy and visual flair, this lavish, bigbudget fantasy takes viewers on an incredible journey.

THE CROODS

U

Director: Kirk DeMicco, Chris Sanders Starring: Nicholas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener The makers of How to Train Your Dragon present a spectacular prehistoric comedy adventure! The Croods are a loveable Stone-Age family. Headed by Dad Grug (Nicholas Cage), they include wife Ugga (Catherine Keener) and eldest daughter Eep (Emma Stone). Grug has only one rule for his brood - never venture outside their cave! But it all gets too much for Eep - whose curiosity gets the better of her. She makes the decision to explore outside the cave - just as a massive earthquake hits. When the dust settles, the family are stunned to discover that their whole world has been transformed! Now Grug must seek out a new home for his family in this strange and unfamiliar environment. And things are complicated even further when Eep takes a liking to nomad Guy (Ryan Reynolds). Filled with memorable characters, this energetic family treat takes viewers young and old on an exciting adventure towards new horizons.

STOLEN

Director: Simon West Starring: Nicholas Cage, Josh Lucas, Sami Gayle, Danny Huston Nicholas Cage reunites with Con Air director Simon West for this frenetic kidnap thriller! After being ratted out following a botched heist, thief Will Montgomery (Nicholas Cage) was sent to prison for eight years. On completion of his sentence, he now aims to repair his relationship with estranged daughter Alison (Sami Gayle). However, ruthless former accomplice Vincent (Josh Lucas) has other plans! Vincent kidnaps Alison and holds her to ransom in exchange for the $10 million worth of loot that he believes Will to have stashed before he went to prison. The problem is, Will doesn’t have it! And worst of all, he only has 10 days to come up with the goods and rescue his daughter - who has been locked inside a soundproof trunk of a taxi. In order to rescue her, Will must return to his old criminal ways and pull off one last heist with the help of another former associate, Riley (Malin Akerman).

We’ve been busy at the centre in recent weeks! Our race night, kindly and entertainingly hosted by Dave Dobbyn was a brilliant night. We raised nearly £600 for the charity CLIC Sargent, so a massive thank you goes out to all those who attended and of course to our generous sponsors. The next race night will be in June, hosted again by Dave Dobbyn, so come along for a chance to win and have a great night out. Our thanks also to go out to Nigel Cross for organising and hosting a great picture quiz night on 2nd March. Our brains were certainly wracked by some of the questions, but congratulations to the winners who took home over £100. We’ve got high hopes for the next one on May 11th, hosted by our very own Dave Dobbyn; the theme is yet to be decided, but knowing Dave, it will be a good night! The quiz night will be a recurring fixture on our events calendar, and we’ll keep it interesting by rotating hosts and themes. More details will be released on the next one in the next issue of the Moreton Hall Directory. On the catering side of things, the Mothers Day three course lunch was another success for the centre. The turnout was great; again over 50 people came for the lunch. If the Facebook comments on our page and the feedback we had on the day were anything to go by, the meal certainly hit the spot for our customers, so again, thank you all for your continued support on what we hope will be a big part of our community centre. Julie, Rob and their team have worked hard, so congratulations to them for a delicious meal served. The centre itself is packed with various clubs and classes during the day and evenings – visit the website for more details of the clubs who frequent us. We do have a large hall available for hire, or two smaller halls as well as a conference room, all with free wifi and refreshments available on request. If you’re interested in hiring us, please contact Kerrie on 01284 763402. The centre is also busy making plans or this year’s Funday, to be held on the 28th July. Keep tuned for more details. On to upcoming events – Saturday April 13th, we’ve organized a disco and Karaoke for your chance to show off your vocal skills, or distinct lack thereof. We were due to have live music from Michelle and Joe, but unfortunately, due to health reasons, we won’t be seeing them again until later in the year. In the meantime, no matter how we may moan at the mention of karaoke, it is certainly a fun way to spend an evening. Come along for a night of cheesy entertainment! One of the events the committee is excited about is the Casino Night on Saturday 27th April. We will have Crapps, Roulette and a Blackjack tables complete with croupiers in the Clubroom. We will be serving a buffet of suitably elegant proportions to tie in with the event – to play, just come along on the night (black tie optional!) and buy some chips for your chance to win prizes. Bingo is as ever being held every other Tuesday – the next one is on 2nd April. At £12 for seven games, and an additional 50p for your chance to win up to £50 on the

lucky number, it’s well worth coming down for. On 19th March, one lucky member won over £50 all together, so remember that could be you and join in. We are also continuing the table top sale, held on the third Sunday of every month. It’s £5 for a table to sell your wares at. When the weather starts to be a little more forgiving we’ll be moving the sale on the field to be a car boot sale (the same price of £5 will apply). If you’ve got an attic full of forgotten treasures you no longer want, book a table to make some money and some space. Alternatively, just come down to peruse and build your collection at what is proving to be a great little local sale. On May 18th we’re hosting the 3rd Annual Bury Darts open. With nearly two months to go at the time of writing, nearly half the spaces have been taken, so for your chance to compete and be in with a chance of winning £800, please fill in your completed form (available from the centre or our facebook page) to us ASAP with the fee of £10 enclosed. We’re being kindly sponsored by Colin Green & Associates, Chilvers Automatics, Greene King, Haart, Unicorn, and the Moreton Hall Post Office, but if anyone reading this would like to help make this a truly exceptional event by sponsoring a board for us at £20 plus VAT, please get in contact with us at the office on 01284 763402. Speaking of darts, in the last issue it was mentioned that the Moreton Hall A and B darts teams were within a whisker of winning their respective divisions. The results are bittersweet. Moreton Hall A won their premier league, ending the 10 year hiatus on winning by reclaiming the title of champions! Congratulations to them. Moreton Hall B won their last game but alas, was not quite enough. They finished level top with Newbury, but just lost out by the smallest of margins on legs. Still, a fine show from all involved, so congratulations to all teams competing – here’s to the next season! With the world cup qualifiers starting soon, we will be showing the England matches on the big screen in the clubroom; come down to cheer with us! There’s more in store for the coming months – quiz nights, race nights, live music, of course the Funday in July and the Darts tournament in May. There’s still places on the shuttle bus to London on the 21st April (£10 each) to support our members as they run the London marathon in aid of CLIC Sargent, so call us to book now. For updates on our events, please visit our website at www. moretonhallcommunitycentre.co.uk. And, as ever, come down and see us at the club! See you there!

Your family may be feeling neglected and unloved. You are best to work at home if you can. You are best to ask questions if you aren’t certain about issues that are confronting you. Top 10 foods

for a spring health boost

Being on a budget doesn’t mean you can’t look after yourself; in fact, if you make sure you buy what’s in season then you can eat fresh, healthy foods without eating too much into the bank balance. And keeping a good diet can improve stamina, concentration and general wellbeing. No brainer? We think so. Here’s 10 top foods right now for a health boost that will put ‘spring’ in your step. Asparagus

This super food is just coming into season and is packed with benefits, as well as tasting beautiful with a poached egg oozing over it. Full of potassium, it aids weight loss and is detoxing, whilst its high levels of folate are known to reduce inflammation and prevent cancer.

Mint

This highly distinctive herb is easy to get hold of and brightens up any dish, especially when served with lamb or new potatoes. It helps digestion which is why we traditionally eat them after meals. Alternatively, it makes a great excuse for an after dinner mojito, so buy some fresh and make them yourself for a yummy and *cough* healthy treat.

Eggs

Bring out your spring chicken and stock up on these low-fat, high-nutrient treats. Promoting healthy hair and nails as well as providing the necessary minerals to keep your eyes in check, there’s more to egg and soldiers than you thought and eating a few a week can make a massive difference to your general wellbeing.

Potatoes

Rhubarb

As the chill starts to fade rhubarb rockets into season, making a great choice for crumbles that are so easy to make and so delicious. What’s more, it’s full of antioxidants and even calcium to keep your bones healthy.

Garlic

Lamb

As food prices soar, eating meat in season helps you save money without having to compromise. Lamb isn’t nearly as popular as chicken, but it makes a great sunday roast, curry, midweek meal or shephards pie that can easily compete for a place in your shopping trolley.

Spring Onions

Not just for keeping the vampires away, garlic is packed with goodness and flavour that make it essential for the food cupboard. It reduces the risk of cancer for one, but it also adds an instant twist to any dish, and is abundant in spring and summer so cheap to buy.

Add a kick to a salad or sandwich with this small but powerful vegetable that helps burn carbs and fight inflammation in the body. A little goes a way when it comes to spring onions, so throw it into the mix when making up your lunch.

Peas

Spinach

The simplest of all vegetables, these cheap and cheerful minions are hard not to love and are so easy to include with your dinner that you have very little excuse not to make at least one of your five-a-day with a small side of greens thrown in the microwave for a few minutes!

It’s one of those things that can be served with almost anything, and for the vast range of antioxidants, mineral, and vitamins, why not? Try wilting it into a curry, pasta dish or casserole towards the end if you aren’t the biggest fan - you’ll hardly notice it’s there at the time, but you’ll notice the difference if you eat it regularly.

These starchy but oh-so-amazing miracles aren’t always as bad as they’re made out to be, and since you can get potatoes all year round they make a great accompaniment to any dish if done the healthy way. They contain vitamin C, potassium, and dietry fibre that keep your bowels in check. Choose white potatoes as they have lower carbs and calories, bake in the oven anD bob’s your uncle!

Eating on the cheap needn’t mean you can’t get fresh and tasty ingredients to create a storm in the kitchen, whether you’re a budding chef or a egg-on-toast, baked potato kind of person. Whilst eating five-a-day may be a lot, making the effort to include some of the healthier items on the menu throughout the week can make all the difference to your health - so stock up on what’s in season and your body will love you for it.

Stress cannot be caught, it is not a disease but failing to cope with stress appears to be affecting more and more people and is causing more days off work (Crane 1997)

‘Stress has forced one in five workers (19%) to call in sick, yet the vast majority of these (93%) say they have lied to their boss about the real reason for not turning up’ “So What is Stress?” In itself stress is neither good nor bad (Shapiro 1996). Stress is the response to a physical, chemical or psychological factor or combination of these that threatens the body’s state of internal balance known as homeostasis. Stress in itself is not the issue, the issue is how people choose to cope and manage the stresses in their lives to enable them to maintain health and balance. Stress is a complex condition, involving many factors that can affect a person on several levels. Stress is the body’s first response to a fear or perception of danger, or to a worry when a person perceives that ‘demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilise’ (Lazarus 1966). If the amount of pressure felt by an individual is beyond their perception of the level of their ability to cope, then they may notice psychological, physical, emotional or behavioural signs developing. Stress manifests in different ways for everybody. Some signs of stress are recognisable: Psychologically sufferers may notice it harder to concentrate or have difficulty remembering or are just more easily distracted. They may worry more or feel ‘down’ frequently. Emotionally the sufferer may be more tearful, irritable and moody. Anger and frustration may manifest themselves leading to behavioural change such as a higher dependency on stimulants such as coffee or alcohol. Sleep may be disrupted and more sick days are taken from work (Lazarus 1966) If the causes of stress are not addressed more physical symptoms

will be felt and illness or disease may follow. The body’s coping mechanisms become less efficient as the body is on constant ‘high alert’ and causes the whole system to be under strain. This stress can manifest itself through anybody system such as the digestive or urinary. Signs of ‘distress’ are different for everybody but can commonly be seen by of cardiovascular problems, digestive problems such as constipation and muscular aches and pains, exhaustion, depression and general malaise. When the body is engaged in dealing with the effects of stress, its ability to defend itself against invading organism’s falters or fails (Kunz 1998). In her excellent book Your Body Speaks Your Mind, Debbie Shapiro states: “Imagine a tube of toothpaste is you. You are under pressure and beginning to experience psychological or emotional stress. But you do not take your lid off, as it were, by recognising what is happening and making time to relax or deal with your inner conflicts. So, what happens to the mental or emotional pressure building up inside you? Eventually it has to find a way out and if it can’t come out through the top (by being expressed and resolved) it will come out somewhere else. It will find the weakest point, whether through your digestive system, your nerves, your immune system or your sleep patterns. Pushed down it becomes illness, depression, addiction or anxiety; projected outwards, it becomes hostility, crime, prejudice or aggression” (Shapiro 1996) ‘OK I recognise the symptoms, so what can I do? I can’t give up my job can I? I will just have to put up with it!’ Actually no. As mentioned before, it is how we deal with the stressful situation that decides how ‘stressed’ or ‘di-stressed’ we feel. If we take or

make time for an activity that we enjoy such as complementary therapy or say a yoga class we rejuvenate our minds and bodies and issues can seem easier to handle. By taking ourselves away for just an hour and taking time for self, suddenly we have more energy and find ourselves stronger, both mentally and physically. ‘So why Reflexology?’ Try it! It is simple and non-intrusive. Most people feel more energised, relaxed and able to face the stresses of modern life. The goal of the reflexology is to enable the body to begin to heal itself as it is programmed to do! Relaxation is the first step to achieving the desired state of homeostasis – the body’s normal balance. From babies to the elderly, it is used by all age groups. What is Reflexology and how can Reflexology help me?’ It is widely held that the body is mirrored in parts of the body, notably the feet and hands, ears and the iris of the eyes. The feet and the hands are obviously the easiest to work with. It helps us deal with symptoms better. It can change the way a person manages their disease. Reflexology is a non-intrusive complementary health therapy where a practitioner usually works on the feet and lower legs or hands. Reflexology can also be performed on the ears and face. Reflexology is a science because it is based on physiological and neurological study and an art because it depends on how skilfully the practitioner applies the knowledge and the dynamics which occur between practitioner and recipient (Issel 1998). The practitioner acts as the mediator to activate the recipient’s own healing potential. ‘Reflexology doesn’t heal only the body heals. But reflexology helps to balance all the body systems, stimulating an underactive area and calming an overactive one (Dougans 1998). Reflexologists do not claim to cure,

diagnose or prescribe. It should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice and The Association of Reflexologists encourage recipient to tell their doctor they are receiving reflexology. Reflexology can be a wonderful antidote to stress. It allows you to have time for self. Reflexology may be the trigger that empowers and helps you cope with what life appears to be throwing your way; enabling you to take responsibility for and control of your own wellbeing. Usually Reflexology results in multisystem relaxation and feelings of wellbeing. Is it true that you can diagnose through the feet? This is against the Association of Reflexologists’ Code of Ethics for good reason. It is believed reflexology acts as a vibration to pull apart molecules thereby harnessing the body’s own energies to encourage efficient energy pathway flows which if suppressed may develop into disease. I believe it is at best unhelpful and at worst harmful to ‘tell what you found’. In reflexology we

work with the Whole person and take a (w)holistic approach, as in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The Chinese concept is also that the sum of the human body is physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Both Reflexology and TCM harness the subtle energies of the whole being to maintain harmony, health and wellbeing. In practice this means that if a recipient suffers from say digestive issues a good reflexologist works all the systems. The underlying issue maybe different; indeed it may not even be physical. I believe I see emotion on the feet. The liver reflex for example sometimes indicates anger! This needs working on, but anger is not physical unless left unchecked, when physical issues may develop. The mind is very powerful and can draw very wrong conclusions from a passing comment. It is normal to ‘find’ congested areas. What is a cause for concern is if these areas do not change over a course of treatments. Then a referral to another professional such as an acupuncturist would be in order. It is believed that Reflexology

originally developed along with acupuncture. Before acupuncture was introduced into the West however all that was known was that stimulation of the feet caused a reaction in the rest of the body. Now we know that the six main meridians ‘energy pathways’ or ‘chi’ run through the feet. This knowledge is very exciting. Another reason for the therapist not to diagnose. An acupuncturist will tell you that disease can manifest anywhere along an energy or ‘chi’ pathway. Reflexology also works along these energy (‘chi’ ) pathways on the feet and hands. This is an enormous subject. TRICEP DIPS

If you don’t have dumbells around the house use bags of sugar or 2litre water bottles to carry out this great full body toning exercise. Standing with your feet shoulder width apart, soft knees, chest up, shoulders back and looking forwards. Bend the knees, push the bum out and lower your body til you have a 90angle from the ankle to the hip making sure the heels stay flat on the floor and the knees do not go over your toes. Breathing in as you lower your body, push through the hell and straighten your legs. When fully extending curl the arms getting your elbows tucked into the body. When weights inline with the top of your chest rotate 180degree and press the weights above your head meeting in the middle. Lower the weights down to the starting position and repeat.

using a step or chair

2sets 10/20 reps

Start

A great cardiovascular workout will be climbing your stairs using a programme called tabata training. For 20seconds sprint up and down your stairs as fast as you can, when the 20seconds is up recover for 10seconds, and repeat this 8 times. The programme will only take 4minutes however do not underestimate the intensity of this workout. Research shows high intense short duration aerobic workout has more fitness and weight loss benefits than a moderate 30minute workout. Eg running on a treadmill at the same speed.

Finish

Place your palms against the step with your fingers wrapped underneath. Keeping your back straight and close to the bench with your legs shoulder width apart and a 90degree angle from the hip to the ankle. Lower the body towards the floor keeping the elbows facing forwards, breathing in as you go down. Before touching the floor push through the palms and bring body to the starting position breathing out.

Joe will show you more exercise routines in next month’s MHD
