EDITOR’S LETTER
WELCOME TO THE
AUGUST ISSUE
Hello and welcome to the August issue of the directory. I’m sure everyone is looking forward to the summer holidays, with the heatwave we have endured lately, myself and Sally here at the Bury St Edmunds Directories have both decided enough is enough and have started a fitness plan called the Wonder Woman 8 Week Fitness Programme with James McLaren - Personal Trainer based at the Rugby Club in Bury, we started this week, so in September’s issue you will be able to read how we are getting on, as we will be half way through the plan, and then in October we will (hopefully) have success stories to share with you all! Watch this space... (although we both have holidays in that time so wish us luck!) With summer in mind, our fashion page on 72 has a selection of gorgeous playsuits to wear on holiday, and on pages 36 and 40 we have healthy recipes to kickstart that summer body! Whilst writing this, I must say I’m feeling slightly more energetic after our early morning gym sessions, so next month myself and Sally should be totally fit and raring to go! Until September, enjoy this issue!

Library Good news, the library which has been operating now for three months in the youth club will now be there until the end of October. It has been such a great success with mothers and toddlers, that the organisers have decided it would be worth taking it further, it was due to finish in September. Along with the library, the club will be open every Tuesday for parents and children to come and play, bring a picnic and spend the day there. There is lots to do, plenty of things for children and mums. During the summer holidays the club will be open for all ages to take part in outdoor games, football, rounder’s and man hunt etc. These sessions will need to be accompanied by parents or an adult. Come along and support.
Parking
Skyliner Way Work on the roadside parking spaces was started but had to stop as the operators found a cable which has to be relocated, hopefully this should be sorted soon. Regarding parking, a meeting was held between Trevor, myself and the council parking manager regarding parking in and around Lawson Place, it was agreed that more parking was needed and a further meeting will take place on 24th July to attempt to do something about it. 10 | AUGUST 2017
BUS SHELTER
There has been a request for a bus shelter on Appledown drive or at least a seat, I have spoken with Mr Mark Walsh, the council officer who deals with items like this, he informs me that it will cost about £3,000 to £4,000 to get this shelter up and there is not enough money in the pot. I have offered part of my locality grant to cover this and am awaiting for Mr Walsh to contact me.

Councillors Pay
GREEN GYM
As most of you have seen the small play area has been cleared and play equipment taken away to be repaired and upgraded. We are waiting for the gym company to come and erect the gym equipment, then we can replace the play area with its new play equipment on its new site. We will soon have you all fit, you never know.
There is a misconception out there that your councillors get paid for being councillors, here is what we get County councillors get an allowance of £11,000 per year before tax we have only one County councillor within our ward. Borough councillors get an allowance of £5,000 per year before tax we have three Borough councillors within our ward, Town Councillors get Zero and there are three Town councillors.
Another Scam
There is another Scam going around and it concerns computers, you get a phone call from a company purporting to be from Microsoft, they will tell you there is a problem with your computer, they will tell you that there is cost to repair the problem and you can pay by card, Firstly Microsoft would not contact you regarding your computer, secondly, you would not have the problem they state and you should never give out your card details over the phone. If you get one of these calls ask for their name and contact trading standards.
MACDONALDS UPDATE
Suffolk Highways have responded to St Edmundsbury Council and state that there is still a problem with the application, it still fails to address parking issues and from the councils point of view, landscaping, litter, noise and parking. We are awaiting McDonalds response, I believe the Council are still of a mind to refuse. A refusal would mean McDonalds going to court to try and have it overturned, if they are successful it could cost the council up to £10,000, keeping everything crossed it does not come to that. You may have read that the council granted permission for Costa to build a 40 bedroom Motel near Tesco’s, the site is a brownfield site and does not lend itself to the same problems that would occur with McDonalds which is on a residential area.
That’s enough from me for now, if you have a problem that any of your councillors can help with just ask, until next time take care, Frank Warby AUGUST 2017 | 11

Supporting West Suffolk Hospital’s
Dear reader,
This month’s My WiSH Charity page is all about our exciting new Every Heart Matters appeal which will benefit cardiac patients across West Suffolk. As a charity we fundraise to enhance the wonderful care already given to patients and their families at West Suffolk Hospital and our new appeal is no exception. Launched mid-July, we are going to fundraise £500,000 for a new cardiac diagnostics unit to complete the stateof-the-art fully-integrated cardiac centre coming to your local hospital. West Suffolk Hospital’s specialist cardiology team offer excellent care but the number of patients they see is growing fast. Now they need a dedicated cardiology centre to provide even better, quicker and more dignified treatment for the community of West Suffolk. Working closely with West Suffolk Hospital’s wonderful cardiology team and consultant, Dr Pegah Salashouri, our aim is to bring our community a new cardiac centre. “The cardiology centre appeal is an exciting opportunity to create somewhere over and above the norm, better than average, a place that will exceed expectations. We want people to feel inspired by their surroundings, confident about the care they receive, calm and in control. I strongly believe that the cardiology centre will enhance treatments and optimise outcomes.” Pegah Salashouri, consultant cardiologist.
cardiac patients
We want both cardiology diagnostics and treatment to be in one area, and for pacemakers and angiograms to be fitted and performed here, saving patients time and money on travel expenses. Treatment will be faster and more efficient ensuring an improved service for our heart patients. Please support our appeal and help us make a difference because every heart matters. There are currently two consultations under way both from St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Suffolk County Council which affect us all. Firstly, the proposal for St Edmundsbury Council and Forest Heath District Council to merge and become one unified council rather than working together as they do at the moment as West Suffolk Council. Full details are available at http://westsuffolk. gov.uk/Council/single_council Let your Borough Councillors Frank Warby, Pete Thompson and Trevor Beckwith have your views or alternatively comment on line at future.council@westsuffolk.gov.uk .There is a useful question and answer section on the web site as well. One of the proposals is to re draw ward boundaries and cut the total number of councillors You can also keep up to date with social media www.westsufolk.gov.uk/contact-us. cfm. Suffolk County Council are consulting on plans to improve the Tayfen Road, Out Northgate and Ipswich Street junctions. W hat’s been happening at...
ABBOTS GREEN Community Primary School The end of another school year is here… We started the year with our very first Year 6 students at Abbots Green and have now just sent them on their way to secondary school following a week of fabulous celebrations. It has been particularly emotional as many of them have been attending Abbots Green since they joined our Nursery Class in January 2010!! On their final week with us the Year 6 children were invited into school each day to have a delicious breakfast together with their classmates. On Tuesday afternoon the children were treated to an ‘It’s a Knockout’ style event on the school field and although the weather was a little wet the children had a huge amount of fun pitted against their friends on a number of inflatables and in other team games. They were whisked off to Abbeycroft Leisure on Wednesday morning for a special ‘Pool Party.’ And then on Thursday – after attending St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Crucial Crew event to learn all about personal safety the children ended their day with games and a celebratory BBQ on the school field. All week they wore their ‘Leavers 2017’ hooded tops with pride and spent Friday gathering messages and memories from friends and staff in their personalised autograph books.
Their week ended with the Leaver’s Assembly on Friday where the children donned their handmade, personalised mortar boards and treated the whole school, and later their families to a tear jerking summary of their time at Abbots Green. This week we welcome all our new children and their families into school and our current pupils spend four days in their new classrooms as part of their transition. We wish all our pupils and their families a wonderful Summer!

Sybil Andrews Academy
LOCAL NEWS
It has been a fantastic first year at Sybil Andrews Academy, full of endeavour and achievement, commitment and dedication from staff, students and parents alike. As I write this, a week before we break up for the summer holidays, I am very proud to lead a school that has achieved so much in a relative short space of time.
The fact that this is an award that has been given to just 150 classes across 5,000 schools in the UK underlines what an incredible achievement this is.
Even in these last few weeks of the school term, our students are still hitting the headlines.
Our last few weeks of the term also saw the hosting of our first ever Sybil Andrews Academy sports day and I must congratulate team Garrett on their win.
First up was our amazing SAA Starlets, our cheerleading squad, who won gold at Europe’s largest cheerleading and dance competition, held in Bournemouth. Under the tutelage of PE teacher, Rhian Earrye, our Starlets have had an amazing first year with cheerleading teaching them about team work, dedication and commitment. They have all worked so hard, putting in extra hours of rehearsals and training, and deserve their success. Congratulations one and all. At the same time, we were also celebrating success in the classroom after Daniel Harris, our Head of English, and his class 7.2 achieved Masterclass status. Awarded by Renaissance Learning, this achievement recognises the time that students spend reading on a daily basis and the number of quizzes that they have passed during the school year based on what they have read.
We were also delighted to welcome Bruce Moye into the school who very kindly donated a brand new defibrillator to the school. It was a great pleasure to meet Bruce, accompanied by our chair of governors Paul Rayner, and it was a wonderful gesture from a kind-hearted member of our community. It has been a great end to an amazing first year as Sybil Andrews Academy. I would like to thank all staff, students, parents, governors and our community for all playing such a crucial part in our success. May I wish you all a very happy summer holidays. Woolly aphids in Moreton Hall
S
ome Moreton Hall residents have reported worrying signs of apple trees and young maple trees along Bedingfield Way “going mouldy”. This is most likely to actually be colonies of Eriosoma lanigerium, the woolly aphid. These insects secrete a fluffy white material under which to hide, which could be mistaken for mould. Affected trees may also show signs of the sticky residue these insects leave behind, known as honeydew. Their favourite host trees tend to be crab apple and edible apple trees, cotoneaster and pyracantha. Unlike other members of the aphid family, they suck sap from the stem of the plant, rather than the leaves. Infestations in the garden can be dealt with by manually scrubbing the colonies away with a brush, but this is hardly an option for us along a main thoroughfare! We will have to rely on natural predators, such as ladybirds, lacewings, hoverfly larvae and parasitic wasps. Those of us who provide the popular ‘insect
hotels’ in our gardens will be making a contribution, by providing overwintering accommodation for these natural pest controllers. The small meadow next to Woodland Ways pond has not produced many wildflowers this year. There have been no bee orchids, not that unusual in itself in that orchids do have dormant years, but also there has been no yellow rattle, the semi-parasitic grassland annual that suppresses grass growth and clears the way for other species of wildflower. We think the amount of shade may be contributing to this poor show. The trees at the margins of the meadow have become quite tall and top heavy, so we are going to look into the possibility of coppicing them. They will regrow straighter and stronger and in the meantime, more light will be allowed in, contributing to a resurgence of wild flowers, we hope, next year

PT
JOE
MY NAME IS JOE SADLER AND I HAVE BEEN A QUALIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER FOR 7 YEARS, WORKING FROM THE MORETON HALL HEALTH CLUB.
My answer to everyone with this question, what’s your goal and weight training experience? How I design a programme for someone with 10 years experience as a confident lifter, will differ completely to someone who has just started. How I design a programme for a man who specifically wants a wider back and bigger shoulders, will differ completely to someone who is looking for general fat loss. There are so many variables to consider, which makes it so difficult to give a set answer to such a wide audience. So I don’t leave you still non the wiser, here’s some guidelines to think about. If you’re looking for general fat loss and you’re pretty new to training, you want to be picking exercises that utilise as much muscle mass as possible. You would also benefit from a full body approach, where you are moving from upper body to lower body exercises throughout the workout. You want to be trying to include as many compound exercises as possible. These are ones where you will be using as many muscles as possible. Examples of these
are, pull downs and variations, rows, squats, split squats/lunges, pressing movements, deadlifts and hip extension movements such as back extension and romanian deadlifts. As a beginner, your body will respond so well to multi joint exercises, you won’t have to worry about individual muscles. As you get more experienced, you can then start to split body parts up. If your goal is muscle building or fat loss and you have a specific shape you would like at the end of it, you do need to be including a broad range of isolation exercises. Yes you will get overall growth by using the big lifts (squats, bench press etc), but to work on weak areas you do have to work them in isolation. I have to disagree with people who think that you should always focus on compound lifts/exercises. If you want to change your body aesthetically and proportionally you do have to add isolation. Too many people copy workouts from magazines that are purely focussed around isolation exercises, when they really need to be putting meat on their frame with the big exercises like squats first. On the other hand, people with the mass who lack the shape, need to look at refining their physique with more isolation work. Think about your goal, think about your training experience and work from there.
If you have any questions you would like to ask please do not hesitate in asking. Joe Sadler Personal Trainer M: 07917 714557 E: ptjoesadler@hotmail.com

LSS Supporting Macmillan’s June Health & Wellbeing Event In June LSS supported Macmillan’s well attended Annual Health and Wellbeing Day at Christ Church, Moreton Hall. The LSS stand was popular with delegates who were given information and advice about Lymphoedema, the West Suffolk Alliance Lymphoedema Service and also about other organisations such as LSN and Macmillan itself. Well done to patient, Pat Pearse, who took part in the Cancer Research UK’s recent 24 hour Relay for Life.
Summer Holiday Packing Lymphoedema style..... There’s so many articles at this time of year about summer packing, you know the sort of thing; capsule clothes packing, best waterproof mascara, best after sun tinted glow products, bikinis, etc. My own holiday packing essentials are a little different......... Clothes with long sleeves, nothing less than SPF 30 sun cream, travel sized container of white spirit (less odour sort) and cotton wool balls to clean the silicone bands of my compression sleeves and then delicate woolly wash for the washing of them, a washing up glove to help put sleeve on, cooling sprays, insect repellent, antiseptic soap, E45 cream and a medical kit in case of bites, scratches, etc. (Don’t Bite Me patches that go behind your ears are good). All that before even thinking about the fun stuff to pack!!! But hey life, whatever you’re

The 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.
Welcome back to the 19th Hole, well what can I say except what a month of golf July was on our shores. From the Irish Open to Scotland Open and then the main event THE OPEN at Royal Birkdale. However, that isn’t it for the golfing calendar in this country just yet as we still have the British masters to look forward to in September. August is still a very important month though, the worlds best players still have a final chance in 2017 to be crowned a major champion at the US PGA Championship, Quail Hollow Club. This major often doesn’t get the same coverage as the three before but this year see’s it’s return to a great course which is set the test the skills of the worlds bets players. It is so hard to pick a winner from the best players in the world presently, so I am not saying he will win but I think Jon Raham will play well around this course.
Coaches Corner – SHORT GAME MATTERS!! This month we look another great short game aspect uneven lies. This month we are focusing on the down hill lie, the PGA life 365 coaching staff have a few important points to help you play these shots better under pressure.
Tip: Match your shoulder and body lines to the slope that your stood on, for this down hill lie you will have a lot of body weight in your left foot (right handed golfer). Tip: Now that you have body matched to the slope on which you are stood on, its now time the make the swing action. Again it is very important to swing down the line on the slope so that a solid strike can be achieved. Lastly, when it came to choosing a club to play this shot it does change from person to person. All we say is that this type of lie will you will loose loft and launch the ball lower and practice this shot before playing it on the course so you know that what works for you. If you are still struggling with your short game after this, or any other part of your game then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this game more. If you quote MHD or SGD when booking your first lesson with me then you will receive £5 off, below are my contact details please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Our speaker for July was Declan Moore, Governor of Hollesley Bay Open Prison. It was an incredibly interesting talk about his life working for the Prison Service and his current role, where he has been the longest serving Governor. The prisoners come from a variety of professions and trades and are serving time for many different crimes. Mr Moore told us that the majority of prisoners come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have not been taught right from wrong or given any love. There have been famous people, bank robbers, drug addicts, alcoholics and driving offence law breakers resident in the Prison. Vocational skills and training courses are being taught to help. It is remarkable that the staff are successful in rehabilitating some of the offenders into working in the community as volunteers and some in paid work. One of the main problems is detecting smuggling of mobile phones and drugs by visitors. Prison life is a challenging and a serious business but Mr Moore’s talk was laced with some funny stories.

Head Injuries By Nick Pringle Head injuries are more common than we think and can happen through many different ways, including falls, road traffic accidents, sports injuries and assaults. They can cause different symptoms depending on whether the brain has been injured, and if so how severely. l Around 1.4 million people attend A&E in England and Wales per year with a recent head injury. Up to 700,000 of them will be children under the age of 15 l Head injury is one of the most common causes of death and disability in people up to the age of 40 l Early detection and prompt treatment is vital to save lives and minimise risk of disability. I have worked in many sports including rugby, football and hockey and head injuries are notoriously known to watch out for, assess and treat quickly and effectively. There are many campaigns in many sports now such as the Head Way #ConcussionAware and Headcase from the Rugby Football Union (RFU), with the intention of thorough pitch-side assessment in order to treat correctly with the best outcome for the player’s health and wellbeing.
Minor brain injury: Concussion Concussion is the most common type of minor head injury. Some people may have lost consciousness for a short time and afterwards 26 | AUGUST 2017
appeared to be back to normal. People with concussion might not remember what happened just before or after the incident.
Severe brain injury Severe brain injuries or ‘traumatic brain injuries’ usually appear in the first few hours after injury and may lead to serious complications that need immediate treatment. The main complications are: l Bleeding inside the skull – this can put pressure on the brain and will need fast treatment, sometimes through an operation l Bruising and swelling in the brain, which may need treatment in intensive care.
Symptoms to look out for Physical signs and issues: l Clear fluid running from the nose or ears l Bleeding or bruising from one of both ears l The mechanism of injury was a fast or forceful blow to the head e.g. hit by a car, fall from height, direct impact tackle during sport l Unconsciousness at any time since the incident l The person is experiencing fatigue, sleep disturbances or sensitive to light/dry eye l Seizures or absences l Headaches, nausea, vomiting, vertigo or tinnitus
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Following on from a head injury
l Stay within reach of a phone l Plenty of rest and avoid stressful situations l Avoid contact sports for at least 3 weeks with a gradual return to play (activity should not bring on or worsen symptoms) l Consult your GP regarding what medication you can and can’t take l Don’t drink alcohol or drive until you feel 100% better l Post-concussion symptoms may be vague and non-specific. Look out for flu-like symptoms, feeling anxious, sensitivity to loud noises, poor attention and concentration as well as inappropriate emotions l Possible shoulder and neck pain/injuries If you experience any of the above then it should be taken seriously. If you come across a head injury in sport and you’re unsure what to do, if in doubt, sit it out. With suspected head injuries make sure that the person isn’t ever left alone and it’s always best to be safe and seek help. If it is believed that the person may have a significant injury to their brain or spine, then a full examination such as scans or X-rays are needed. Doctors, nurses, ambulance crews and sports medics use the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) to assess a person’s level of consciousness after a head injury. The scale measures 3 aspects of consciousness: eye-opening, verbal response (e.g. speaking) and the responsiveness of the body (e.g. the response to pain). The person’s score in each area is added up to give a maximum score of 15 (normal consciousness) and a lowest level of 3 (severe coma). A computerised tomography (CT) scan will be done of the head, using x-rays to create detailed images of the inside of the head and body. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is sometimes needed to produce detailed pictures of the brain, which in some cases can provide more information than a CT scan. These will both be used to check for damage of tissue, bones in the neck, spinal cord or nerves too. In most cases people will be discharged when the medical professionals think it is

Once again we find ourselves in a situation of need. To ensure the smooth running of the group we are looking for volunteers, with relaxed attitudes, to fill two roles of responsibility. Chairperson Someone to effectively run the group and provide leadership, who can represent, assist in decision making, giving support and encouragement. Secretary Someone who is good at communication, administration, IT, and organisation. Both roles involve:• having a good understanding of others needs planning ahead • working closely with members • being actively involved in project related matters • attending and participating in group events and activities. Are you someone with time on your hands and are willing to give up some of your time to help a community group in need. If so please give us a call on 07724 187774 or email info@ chronicpainsupportgroup.co.uk We are a friendly group of likeminded people and meet in a ‘safe’ environment. If you come along you will receive a warm welcome. 28 | AUGUST 2017
Our CPSG meeting in July was a social get together with afternoon tea consisting of finger sandwiches, scones and cakes. The perfect occasion to present a member with a gift of thanks for all her help and support in the group and to celebrate her special birthday. Our next CPSG meeting is on Thursday 17th August at Southgate Community Centre in Bury from 2pm-4pm. We will be welcoming back a Taoist Tai Chi Practitioner. A session that members will actively participate in, the movements being specifically designed to improve health. The movement exercises the whole physiology and are accessible and beneficial to everyone regardless of their physical condition. If you feel this is something that you would like to try and maybe of benefit to you, please come along and join in, we would love to see you there. Many people who live with pain find it debilitating and feel isolated, coming to a support group helps them to help themselves and feel more able to cope with their conditions. Having a positive attitude and a focus can be beneficial in many ways. Social interaction is invaluable too. People gain a considerable amount from being able to meet other people in similar circumstances so if you find yourself in this position take this opportunity to come and see what we have to offer!

6 weeks of summer
BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD
F
irst off, let me get one thing straight. I adore my kids. They are my life. But…(and here it comes) it’s normally about this time of year I wonder who the heck thought that giving them 6 weeks off school every summer was such a great idea!? At the time of writing I am still building up to the summer break, physically and mentally preparing my self. That said, I can already tell you that this is basically what will happen:
The adults are completely exhausted. Week 3: Right, things are starting to get harder now. Finding something they all want to do is impossible. Even a trip to the park is greeted with indifference. Week 4: Is it wrong I now look forward to my work days and gleefully hand over the childcare baton to my wife? Good luck!
Week 5: Two weeks left. Really – two whole weeks!? Give me strength (or cheap wine). The chances of all 3 Week 1: This isn’t so bad after kids making it to September all. The kids are playing nicely in one piece seems slim at with each other (mostly) best. and I’ve only shut myself in Week 6: Come on. We can the bathroom to escape the do this! Those teachers chaos twice. Happy days. better have enjoyed their Week 2: The family holiday. A holidays – they won’t welcome change of scenery, know what has hit them staying in a remote farm next week! Oh, hang on… cottage somewhere. The do I remember seeing kids have the time of their something about a teacher lives, climbing drystone walls training day in September? and standing in cow pats. Argh!!! 42 | AUGUST 2017
There are a few things I’ve learned that can help summer run smoothly. Sort out the school shoes and uniforms early on. Don’t forget to drag the screwed up PE kits out of the bags at some point prior to the night before they go back! I find getting things all set for the return is psychologically a boost and reminds me that they will return at some point. Obviously, as with all things in my life, a list is a must. Get the kids to make a list of stuff to do on what days. You don’t have to stick to it rigidly, but I find it helps everyone to have a bit of structure and an idea about what lays ahead. Of course, we should step back and remember how lucky we are. Time flies by and before you know we’ll be looking back at these long summers wondering where our lives went. Meanwhile, our youngest ‘baby’ starts at the school Nursery in a month. Wow. How did that happen?!

r e n r o C t f a r C WELCOME TO THIS MONTH’S CRAFTY COLUMN.
Every month I share a crafty activity to try at home. I’m Michelle and I own the crafty foxes. I run adult and children’s workshops, children’s crafty parties, after school clubs, hen-dos and a wedding/events mobile crafty creche. If you like this column you might like my kids club, held on the last Saturday of every month upstairs in Denny Bros. See www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk for more information
No school! just endless Summer days so what better way to celebrate than with an outdoor crafty activity I’m calling ‘Pavement pictures’. All you need is tape, water, chalk and a paintbrush. • Tape a frame onto the pavement • Chalk a pattern inside the frame using different coloured chalk • Dip your paintbrush in water and draw a picture inside your frame like a heart, a star, a smiley face. The water will remove the chalk from your design. • Leave to dry • Remove the tape to reveal your design. • Create lots of pictures along your path or make a hopscotch pattern.

The person
behind the Ad...
Adnan Ahmed -
Manager of Orissa Restaurant
How long have you been working at Orissa and tell us a little about the business that no one would know... I started working at orissa from day one and it’s now coming up to 10 years which I can’t believe myself! I remember the very first customer who came into the restaurant, he was from Sweden I think and only came in because he couldn’t figure out what our old sign we had meant.
What did you do before working at Orissa? I’ve actually done quite a lot with myself, I’ve worked at HSBC Bank before the restaurant, it was good but just wasn’t challenging enough to be honest. I even worked at Homebase once upon a time for only £3.13 an hour! So when the youth of today tell me that £7 an hour is not enough they really need to learn the principle of working hard for what you earn.
What is the best part of your job? The best part about my job is seeing the satisfaction of people having a great time and enjoying our amazing food. I pride myself with the food we provide and also trying our best to give a healthy good option using less oil and fatty products.
58 | AUGUST 2017
And the worst?... Definitely silly complaints. Like recently, I had a complaint saying we delivered the food too quickly and to take it back and bring it back in 15 mins! Also, when the restaurant is empty lol!
When you’re not working, what do you enjoy doing? When I’m not working I’m still working! Veing in this trade is basically a 24-7 kind of thing. But when I do get some time I do love to go to the gym. The progression I’ve made is crazy, i look back on myself and think wow you’ve made a change! I love my cars too, I’ve recently bought a 1987 e30 coupe what I’m restoring and I love BMWs, me and my brother constantly argue about what’s better, the Audi or BMW (he’s the audi man) but obviously its BMW!

108 RISBYGATE STREET, BURY ST EDMUNDS, SUFFOLK IP33 3AA T: 01284 719116 or 756666
Tell us something about yourself that not many people know? My first job was actually a punishment from my dad for bringing home bad grades from school. My dad made me stand at the door of the restaurant on Valentine’s day handing out roses to the women. It was a daunting job but taught me that you should always work hard in everything you do.
What is your favourite music? I love hip hop music! Going back to Tupac and Biggie. But at the moment I’m really into the UK grime. Krept and Konan are ones to always look out for!
And Film: Got to say all the fast and furious films!
What is your biggest achievement to date? One accomplishment is probably buying my range rover before I was 27. But the biggest was seeing how proud my dad was when he saw it being delivered (whilst giving me a lecture), he had to sell his Range Rover because he couldn’t drive it anymore so thought I’d get one just so he can still ride in one.
Where did you go to school? Started life of education at Hardwick Primary then Hardwick Middle moved midway and went to Howard Middle and then finished off at King Edwards Upper School in Bury.
If you could choose 1 famous person to have dinner with (dead or alive), who would it be and why? Will Smith would be one of them people! He has so much that I could learn from him and he’s funny too
What would you eat at the meal? Well I would want him to come and eat food at Orissa, it would be great for promoting us haha!
And drink? Well I don’t drink, plus I’m trying to stay healthy so it would be just a water for me.
Have you any hobbies? I have a little Renault Clio 182 that I take to track days when it’s not broken, and I love watching football, Manchester United is the team! Oh, and eating! I love food!

Ginger Cake
This recipe is a really fun and tasty thing to bake! It may use a few pots and pans but the end result is the best thing ever. The ingredients you will need are: 225g self-raising flour, 1 tsp bicarbonate soda, 1 tbsp ground ginger, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1 tsp ground mixed spice, 115g unsalted butter, 115g black treacle, 115g golden syrup, 115g brown sugar, 275ml milk (semi-skimmed) 1 egg The tools you will need are: spatular, spoon, bowl, sieve, 2 pans and two loaf tins. This recipe make 2 loaf tins worth but if you half it all you will have one, it just depends on what you want. Firstly you need to pre-heat the oven to 180C fanned. Then get you flour, bicarbonate soda, ginger, cinnamon and mixed spice and sieve that all together into the bowl. Then get the butter and put that in and rub it in with the dry ingredients. Once 60 | AUGUST 2017
you have rubbed that in together you need to get your first pan and put the golden syrup and treacle into it and put that on a low temperature to mix it together, but keep stirring it the whole time- don’t let it boil! Once that’s done take it off to cool for about 10-15, but while you are waiting get your second pan and put the milk and sugar in on a low heat to dissolve together. Once that is then done put both of the pans ingredients into the bowl as well as the egg and mix together with your spoon. After you have mixed it all just pour it into your baking tins and put it in the oven for about 25-30 minutes and then you’re good to go. If you need to leave it in for longer you can it just depends how you like it. I then put some fruit around mine and viola!
Summer Holidays We all love the summer holidays! My school broke up on the 21 of July, and now we are a third of the way through the holidays, do they have to end?! It’s so nice going to school and I do appreciate it but it is nice to have time to just chill and do nothing! It’s always nice to do new things and see people. So far these holidays I’ve been to town with some friends and been to the pancake and waffle shack. Which was absolutely amazing! It just gets better every time I go there, last time I went I had pancakes with chocolate and strawberries, I totally recommend it if you are going! There

is so much time in the holidays but it just goes so fast! I also have been up to the park on Moreton Hall, it’s so nice to have a new and improved park up on the estate just to nip to for an hour. Most obviously I have been running and doing netball. Sadly netball stops through the holidays but me and my brother like to play around with it in the back garden most weeks. Running still continues but it just depends what I’m up to and when. I go on holiday soon so obviously I won’t be going then but I do really enjoy doing it.
Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe There’s a new shop in town, a sweetie shop! They opened in June and in there they sell things like sweets, chocolate, and American candy. The shop is right near The Body Shop in town and is called ‘’Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe.’’ When I went there at the weekend I just thought ‘wow’, so many sweets can I have them all?!? The staff in there were really friendly and helpful. It’s a family run business and they are pleased with how well the shop is doing so far. There is a huge range of sweets in there, they do American sweets, I really like sweet tarts and bottle lids. What’s your favourite American candy? When I went into the shop I bought some banana sweets coated in chocolate, a long sweet, rhubarb and custard hard sweets, cola pips and sour patch (not just for me to eat!). I can definitely report back that it was amazing and everything tasted brilliant. The chocolate bars look lovely (I plan on buying a salted caramel bar next time- but which size?) the hard boiled sweets were weighed to order. Some of the other chocolate bars are made by Peter Quiggins who sells his chocolate at the bottom of Mount Everest! How cool is that!?! Another really good thing was that in there they did a sugar free section and personally I think that is really good for those who can’t eat/have a lot of sugar. Also, the prices in there were very reasonable, I think I know where lots of my pocket money will be going! Overall I think that it is a really good shop and totally recommend everyone of any age to pop in when in town- there’s something for everyone! AUGUST 2017 | 61

ow often do you just ignore your energy suppliers and insurance policies leaving them to renew automatically each year. All you are doing is lining the pockets of fat cats and share-holders when you could be lining your own pockets! Here are a few ideas to help, a few hours work can save you a small fortune.
1 Switch your energy supplier or lower your existing supplier’s tariff. There are plenty of comparison sites and you could save £££’s per year. Just be careful with smart meters, a new supplier may charge you for a new one.

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum
Echoes of the Past – Sunday August 6th Our ‘Big Day’ is approaching fast
Re-enactment groups, craft stalls, military vehicles, ‘home made cakes’, classic cars, raffle, ‘mini funfair rides’, trade stands, BBQ, Hog Roast and a few ‘planes flying in to join us. (We still have limited places available, so please get in touch now). Please come and join us for our great community day. Stall set up from 08.00. Gates open 10.00. This year we celebrate our 25th Anniversary. After the American service personnel moved out of the airfield (December 1945) the main museum building, the Control Tower, became a domestic dwelling. In 1992 historical enthusiasts where allowed the opportunity to restore the building, the beginning of the museum. The Tower is not just a Museum but it is a Memorial to the personnel who lost their lives in the 1942 to 1945 conflict. Our enthusiasts continue working to develop the buildings and the artifacts in the collection. We are always looking to increase membership and for volunteers. The Museum has many areas that constantly need maintenance, staffing and up-keep. Recent visitors have included the daughter and family of a veteran, the local Royal Artillery Association members, ‘Howdens’ staff for a rounder’s evening with BBQ and we continue having interest from ‘paranormal groups’ for night visits. We are also very grateful for a donation from the Rotary Club (Abbey Branch). In the past month two film crews have used the museum and airfield, one being Channel 4

Local businessman celebrates 25 years of business
Local businessman, Andy Goodridge celebrates 25 years of business in Bury St Edmunds. Andy shares his business journey so far, and his hopes for the future, as his 3 businesses; Bury Golf Range, Pot Black Sports Bar and Slates Restaurant & Carvery continue to thrive.
Andy Goodridge, pictured at Bury Golf Range, Rushbrooke Lane
THE BEGINNING Andy Goodridge was introduced to golf by his father at age 12 and joined Bury St Edmunds golf club as a junior member. A job in the pro shop working for Pro Chris Kivelan and in 1983 he won the Suffolk Junior Championship. Encouraged to join the Professional Golfers Association when he left school, with a passion for the game, he moved to Thorpeness Golf Club to train with Ex European tour player Robin Mann. Andy missed not being able to play in amateur events, and feeling poorly advised to join the PGA, at such a young age he made the tough decision to leave the Professional Golfers Association at that time.
70 | AUGUST 2017
After gaining his amateur status back Andy went to work with his father in the butchery trade before finding a job in the leisure industry, his boss at the time could see his potential and offered him a managerial position at Bury Bowl.
BURY GOLF RANGE He wanted to continue with his leisure experience, but wanted to combine his love of golf, so he researched golf driving ranges and started looking for land. Even after being told it would never work, Andy put together a business plan, 1st of August 1992 Bury Golf Range first opened its doors. Andy has employed various teaching professionals over the years to offer golf lessons to his golf range customers and successfully went on to win the Suffolk Foursomes title with one of them Kevin Golding. TRAGEDY STRIKES 2001 Andy was a victim of a glass attack leaving him partially blind in his left eye. 2002 felt the right time for Andy to gain his professional status back, to be able to teach golf to others and take on new assistants to the game to train under his wing. Andy gained the EGTF and in 2006 his PGA qualifications after completing a three years degree course and playing ability test.

MOVING FORWARD In 2008 Pot Black Snooker Club was for sale, which seemed like an opportunity. Andy invested and updated the club, and Jimmy White relaunched it. SLATES In 2014, Andy took yet another business leap, Slates Restaurant and Carvery available for private hire, themed party nights, Christmas Party Nights Details www.slatesrestaurantandcarvery.co.uk
FULL CIRCLE 2015, life came full circle when Andy employed professional Robin Mann, his old boss from Thorpeness, who joined the current team of teaching professionals at AG School of Golf –Jason Smith and lady trainee Ellie Aldous, group lessons and private lessons are available, call 01284 723894. The golf store has grown to 3000 square feet and is part of the Foremost golf group, stocking many leading brands.
I am exceptionally proud to have been in business 25 years, and to know I have played a part in encouraging new players to the great games of golf and snooker! Andy Goodridge

CHURCH NEWS
Christ Church MORETON HALL You may have read in the Bury Free Press that Sainsbury’s is no longer continuing to offer exclusively Fair Trade products and is planning to replace them with “fairly traded” products. You might be asking ‘what’s the difference?’ Well, having checked with the Fair Trade foundation, anything that has the green and blue Fair Trade logo on it has to fulfil the following three principles. 1. It ensures that a fair price is paid to producers and workers, a price that allows them to live, not just to survive. 2. The product has been produced in safe working conditions with no child labour and with non-discriminatory working practices. 3. The price for the product has been arrived at fairly. On the other hand, if the item is labelled as
‘fairly traded’, none of those three requirements may have been met. Also, there is little or no policing behind whatever has been agreed and we have no idea as to how much additional price has been added by the supermarket. Something is really only Fair Trade if it has the logo on it. One of the lasting benefits of the Fair Trade movement is that over the last twenty five years, millions of people have been lifted out of poverty. They have been able to work with dignity and provide decent homes, clothing and education for themselves and their families. Large sections of the third world no longer rely on massive handouts from rich counties and are in a position to determine their own economic and political future. All the supermarkets have still been able to make a reasonable profit and support Fair Trade and we have been able to obtain food that we can afford. We also know our food is produced in a way that is healthy and safe for everyone involved in its production.

CHURCH NEWS
If you are concerned about this, what should you do? Firstly, when you go to any supermarket, please look out for the fair trade logo. If something is shown as fairly traded, ask for the Fair Trade equivalent, and if the Fair Trade product is not available, please express your disappointment. Everyone is concerned about their economic future in this country but millions of people around the world depend on us buying their products. If we stand together and insist on justice and fair prices for all, everyone will benefit. I do hope you will treat this matter seriously and act appropriately. Baptism and Alpha It was a tremendous blessing at the end of July to see people baptised by total immersion in our church. Over the last few months there has been a significant number of people coming to faith at Christ Church, and it has also been a great joy to send seven people to a third world country in south east Asia taking special skills to help the people there. During August we will see lots more baptisms of children at our Sunday morning services. Why is all this happening? Well, people are finding faith and think it is very important. ‘Faith is not a dull thing that you keep in your pocket and bring out when you need it. Rather, it is the greatest adventure ever.’ Don’t believe me? Well that’s what Bear Grylls thinks. In September we will be doing a new Alpha course as advertised by Mr. Grylls and I want to invite you to come and join us in this weekly course on Thursdays. Sunday 24th September is set aside to start it and the course begins on 28th September. I do hope you will able to come.

Starring Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano
In the latest horror film from the director of ANNABELLE, 17-year-old Clare Shannon (Joey King) is barely surviving the hell that is high school, along with her friends Meredith (Sydney Park) and June (Shannon Purser). When her dad (Ryan Phillippe) gifts her an old music box with an inscription that promises to grant the owner”s wishes, she thinks there is nothing to lose. Clare makes her first wish and, to her surprise, it comes true. Before long, she finally has it all: money, popularity and her dream boy. Everything seems perfect - until the people closest to her begin dying in gruesome and twisted ways. Now, with blood on her hands, Clare has to get rid of the box, before it costs her and everyone she loves the ultimate price. Produced by Judd Apatow (Bridesmaids, Knocked Up, Trainwreck), don’t miss the hilarious romantic comedy film of the summer, THE BIG SICK starring Silicon Valley star Kumail Nanjiani. When Pakistanborn aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani) connects with grad student Emily (Zoe Kazan) after one of his standup sets, what they thought would be just a onenight stand blossoms into the real thing. But this further complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. Then Emily is beset with a mystery illness forcing Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he’s never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.

Rejuvenate your body & mind yoga pilates tai chi meditation qi gong physiotherapy Shhh… Did you know that there are only 20 weeks until it’s time to air out the little black dress? Set yourself a manageable goal to do a little each week to firm up and flatten that tummy. Pilates is an excellent way to tighten the core muscles which make you stand taller, improve deportment and hold everything in. Yoga improves flexibility and strengthens the whole body. There are different styles and paces to suit everyone and you don’t need to be fit and flexible to start - that is the end goal! For those of you that need some time to chill out during the school holidays why not try Mindfulness Meditation, Tai Chi and Qi Gong as well as some specialist workshops. The café is always open, so bring a friend and stop off for lunch or a coffee whilst you are here.
