EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome to the JULY
ISSUE
Hi everyone, hope you are enjoying watching the Euro’s! Whilst writing this we are eagerly awaiting the Germany match coming up on Tuesday, so fingers crossed that as you read this we are through to the semi-finals! On page 38 we have a yummy burger recipe to try if you are having a BBQ at home watching it! And on page 62 a few garden accessories to brighten up the patio. With the lifting of restrictions date put back by Boris, we sadly are not able to do what we want right now, a few things we had booked have been cancelled but hey-ho, August will hopefully look much brighter and we will all be able to meet up with friends and family properly! See you all then!

Enquiries Flooding in
Mayor may not?
Following my election to County Council last month, I am now getting a grip on my new role in that organisation. As promised, I have already held meetings surrounding the periodic flooding at Compiegne Way, but was dismayed to learn that future works will be difficult to achieve as in the previous period over £700,000 was spent on the problem which has not deliveered a full solution. This is tying my hands now, however I feel there are alternative solutions by concentrating on the road topography rather than focussing on drainage and pumps. We will see how the project develops over time. I have also never had so many emails in a month as I had in June. Most were concerning grass, bush and tree cutting. I am getting around enquiries using a new casework system and we also now have the capable Birgitte Mager to help with work around our community.
The new SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school scheduled for opening in 2022 is well on schedule. We received notification that building work will be commencing any day now. Whilst it is yet more building work for residents around the airfield, this one is a very important part of our next generation’s educational needs. I am staying close to the project as it is run by the same trust as Sybil Andrews.
Before May, it was unclear as to what we were going to do at Town Council for the chair of the council. I am humbled that I was asked to remain as Mayor and was voted back into the position by my peers. Already, we can see positive movement regarding Covid as we held our first meetings in our new home at the Guildhall and I was able to attend ceremonies for the Royal British Legion to mark the anniversary of D Day.
Security We have seen a horrific incident in Moreton Hall. Whilst I won’t go into detail, I will remind us all that this is very much out of the ordinary. Moreton Hall and wider Bury St Edmunds is one of the most pleasant and safe areas to live in the UK. Linked to the incident, we have seen many posts on social media about particularly unsavoury characters prowling at night and trying car and house doors. Two things on this - please ensure that your own belongings are safe and that doors are locked at night or if you are away; secondly, I am taking the issue of street lighting up once again at the request of several residents. I will be honest on this last point, it will be difficult to make a case for lighting to be back on if I cannot prove a link between crime and the lighting. When street lights were initially turned off at night, crime stats actually went down. I will be pursuing a trial.

charity Registered Charity No. 1049223
You may remember that we launched our 25th birthday appeal last September. The #25 appeal aimed to raise £25,000 to provide a play specialist for a year in the emergency department at West Suffolk Hospital. Nine months on we are now at £27,000 meaning we can do even more to help young patients. Springtime saw Claire Thompson join the Trust. She is their first play specialist and has been funded by the charity for her first year. Claire described the main focus of her role as preparing children for procedures such as imaging, blood tests and theatre, helping them to deal with anxiety or worries. “It’s also mythbusting,” said Claire. “Children have radar ears and can pick up all sorts of fears about things like needles or the MRI. Their families can bring preconceptions which they pass on to the patient, and siblings can also be anxious, so it is important to take a holistic approach.” Play specialists, she said, often get comments about being all about bubbles. “Bubbles are great,” said Claire with a smile, “but it’s much more than that. Normalising play helps children, even really small ones, understand what is going to happen. I want to bolster the morale of children facing treatment or investigation, and help them to feel strong. “Children are so individual, you have to adapt to their needs,” she continued. “Some want to know every detail, and watch everything that happens. Others don’t want to see anything so I use books like Where’s Wally or I-spy books that divert their attention and act as a great distraction, sometimes to distort or block the view of the procedure they are having. I also use sensory tools such as things that light up and that’s where the bubbles can come in!” Ironically bubbles were what led to the feedback from a mum, just two weeks after Claire started, when her young son had an accident. He had been to the hospital a few times which made him anxious but Claire arrived with bubbles and a smile and, by the end of the visit he didn’t want to go home! Such a simple thing that could prevent future hospital phobias. We are thrilled to support this role and with your help we can continue to make a difference. Community Centre The end is in sight as the site huts have been moved away from the Community Centre. Windows and doors are the next stage of the refurbishment and these should be installed by the end of July. That just leaves the heating system!!!! The community centre office will have it’s new home at the front of the building along with the library service room and very soon access to the post office will return to the front of the building. The next task the centre faces is to tidy up the outside space after 4 months of not being able to maintain it. The extended period of restrictions required a couple of bookings to have to reschedule but have now secured new dates. This now gives us a very full diary of bookings with some dates still available so if you are looking for a venue please contact Kerrie on 01284 763402 or drop us an email at moretonhallclub@aol.com. We are always looking for additional staff to add to our team in order to service these events and anybody interested should email colhou0512@ gmail.com for details. The social clubs re opening has been met with an influx of new members and we welcome you all. Ensure you follow us on social media and also receive our emails to keep fully up to date with details of events as they are organised. Look out for our pop up food events that have supported us during the Euro’s so far and will become a feature supporting events in the future. SOUTHGATE Co Southgate Community Centre is happily open and embracing back regular and new hirers all enjoying our superb facilities. We welcome any enquiries from groups, parties and individuals looking to hire any of our halls and Centre manager Jackie would be delighted to hear from you and discuss availability. We have users that have historically attended our Centre for many years and none more loyal and appreciated than the Bury Starlets Baton Twirlers who celebrate thirty years since they formed.
Thirty years ago Karen Long formed the Bury Starlets Baton Twirlers based at Southgate Community Centre and twirlers past and present gathered to celebrate with Karen their 30th birthday. Back in 1991 it was a popular activity for young children taking part, an amazing sport using up to three batons depending on ability, combining baton skills with gym and dance combinations from the age of 4 upwards.
Karen’s daughter Rachel paid tribute to her mother’s dedication, “I would like to say a massive thank you for the many experiences and amazing memories that Karen has given us, for her dedication and giving up so much of her time to the Starlets, the tremendous support she has given to each and every one of the girls throughout these thirty years” Further info from Karen on 07739103641 New Twirlers most welcome.

Karen remembers the past thirty years with fondness, “ We started twirling in January 1991 at Southgate Community Center moving to Hardwick Middle School when we got a council grant then returning to Southgate. We have achieved lots in our time, got to go on television with the Help squad , we got Pom poms from Dallas cowboys and had two athletes competed in the International Club, competing in many countries from Australia to Ireland, America and Amsterdam. Girls compete in many competitions and fetes throughout the region and dazzle with their skills”.

of litter bins dotted around Moreton Hall so there is no real excuse to drop litter. How about a Community Litter Pick in the autumn .? West Suffolk Councillors Trevor Beckwith and Peter Thompson and retired councillor Frank Warby along with Town Councillors Cyrille Bouche and Tony Whittingham have all contributed from their locality budgets towards the refurbishment of the underpass. An artist Reprezent has been selected and final negotiations are underway. The four Moreton Hall Schools are participating and it is hoped that the work will be finished by the time the schools return for the autumn term at the very latest. The Residents Association would like to thank Frank and Patsy Warby for their many years of service to the Moreton Hall Community and to the town and wish them both a well-deserved retirement. A thank you to Trevor Beckwith who was not re-elected to Suffolk County Council at the 6th May election for all his work on behalf of the community at County Council level over many years. He continues on West Suffolk Council as one of our three district councillors. MHRA are writing to the new Cabinet Member for Highways at Suffolk County Council requesting action on the increasing HGV traffic and better signage for HGVs on and off the A14. This follows a survey undertaken by MHRA, a recent circular produced by a local resident and comments on the Moreton Hall Voice Facebook page.

Cycle paths and school path It is a shame to see our pathways overgrown with nettles and brambles. The path from Symonds road along the rear of Sebert wood school has nettles four feet high and children have to walk that way to get to school. In the old days when the grass was cut, they also trimmed the edges, they just ride over the area cut the grass and leave. I have emailed the Council hopefully they will act.
Litter/dog foul Is it me or is there more litter around, I spoke to a lady this morning who was walking her dog she said she had to go back home and get her litter picking equipment and pick up litter that was around. Ten Acre field is always a problem especially during the summer days, youngsters get up there and have parties, which is all fine, but they should clear up afterwards instead of leaving it for others to do. There is the same problem with the football field next to the youth club, bottles, beer cans and other litter. Dog foul; again this seems to be a growing problem, it may be because there are a lot more dogs around but people should be responsible and clear up after their dogs.
Youth Club It has been over 18 months since the club was open, however I see it is now being used by groups for training and other sessions and with lockdown easing up hopefully the club will restart soon. Anyone needing information contact Leon Edwards at the following email address. Leon@pushforward.org.uk and I am sure he will help you. Before opening the club Leon is asking for helpers.
Beware I have seen on Facebook recently several people mentioning that their door cameras have caught images that appear to show someone attempting to get into their car/property. Please be aware and review your security.
Pond It is a shame to see the state of our ponds on the estate, pond covert is a mess with logs being thrown in and bits of trees thrown in, even the ducks won’t go in. And Home covert now has a little pond in the hole made by an American Bomber which crashed during World War II, sadly killing the crew. Home Covert also has a number of logs thrown into it and rubbish dumped in it. That’s it for now, take care. Frank Warby, Moreton Hall Resident

Cllr Trevor Beckwith West Suffolk Council
Barton Road I am aware that concerns have been raised about the width of the footpath on Barton Road, from the UK Power Networks site towards Eastgate Street. Most will agree the path, is unfit for purpose. Earlier this year, I again asked for it to be inspected as it fails the minimum width requirement and is effectively narrowing as it becomes more and more overgrown. The council responded by saying it’s wide enough. Maybe they haven’t tried to manoeuvre a pushchair or mobility scooter along it or considered pedestrians passing in opposite directions. The standards are set out in a document, available to view online, called the Highway Maintenance Operational Plan which details what they will fix and when. The plan states that, “The busier a road or footway is in terms of traffic, the greater the chance of a defect causing a problem. Effectively, Suffolk Highways is giving greater priority to the roads that carry most vehicles and less priority to the quieter roads.” So, if a footpath isn’t used as much because of its poor condition, it won’t ever get sufficient use to become a higher priority. Moreton Hall is very well served by footpaths and cycle paths but according to the last data I saw, we also have the highest percentage of car use. It doesn’t make sense if those who want to walk or cycle are deterred by the lack of maintenance.
HGV’s The latest information regarding the increasing number of HGV’s in residential areas is more positive than it has looked for some time. The West Suffolk Council scrutiny committee unanimously agreed to carry out an in-depth scrutiny of the negative impact of the Eastern Relief Road and underused Junction 45 of the A14. Although the council cannot themselves take action, I hope that they will recommend mitigating measures, including improved signage on the A14 and within the business park. The meeting was originally scheduled for July but as there is a clash of meetings with the county council, I have agreed to postpone the hearing until the September meeting.

SUMMER STARLINGS IN MORETON HALL
T
here’s a house in Moreton Hall where starlings nest, year after year. They carry thin twigs, no more than the thickness of a match, under the bottom roof tile and make a nest on top of the wall. They can’t get in the loft from there, so don’t make a mess inside. The chicks can be noisy when screaming at their parents to feed them, and the sound of birds scampering in the eaves can be mildly annoying. However, these small disadvantages are far less than the delight at seeing the young birds when they fledge and move round the garden in groups of cuties still being fed by parents.
There’s been a lot of delight this year, because two houses in line of sight of the original house also hosted a starling family, and a third house just a few tens of metres further away also had a nest. all in the same place, under the lowest roof tile at the corner of the house, on the wall plate. The local predators have learnt where to look too. A crow has been seen on a roof, watching to see where the adult bird came out and then inserting its bill to try and drag out a downy snack. Starlings are still common breeding
birds, but have been declining since the 1960s, 1980s or the 1995, depending which bit of the RSPB website you read. Moreton Hall is lucky to do its bit to breed up a few more. These starlings will stay all year round, if they survive - only about 15% survive a year and if they do survive that long they will live for 2 or 3 more years. Each winter, starling numbers double with arrivals from north Europe to join our residents in our ‘warm’ winters. These birds then go to their summer homes leaving us with just the locals again.

What’s been happening at...
HARDWICK Primary School
The sun is shining and summer knocking on the door and great we were able to hold our three sports mornings for the key stages in lovely weather. A very closely fought and enjoyable contest between classmates in their coloured teams with the Reds narrow winners. In school we have decided to give our school library a complete makeover and relaunch, we want to make sure that every child in school loves books and that we develop a culture of reading that will last our children a lifetime. The aim is to move, refresh and replenish our library with books that will excite and promote reading and it becomes a place where children want to spend time getting lost in books and stories. We are hugely grateful to Cllr Patrick Chung and Joy Childs from 28 | JULY 2021
the English Speaking Union for donating £100 of vouchers so we could take some children to Waterstones in town to buy books. English lead Mrs Cowling said it was an exciting experience “It was lovely to have the opportunity to take the children into a book shop and see their eyes light up when getting to choose a selection of books that they liked the look of. It’s such an exciting opportunity to relaunch the library and to get the children excited by books and reading. Loving books and getting them reading! We’re really looking forward to trying to use as many local companies as we possibly can to try and support us”. Daryl Jones – Head teacher Andy Abbott – Vice Chairman of Governors

Tips to make the summer sunshine more enjoyable for those living with Lymphoedema and Lipoedema.
Avoid exposing the affected lymphoedema and/or lipoedema area to heat and sun, which can cause inflammation, so protect your skin from the sun by covering up with clothes or wearing sun cream with a SPF of at least 30. Best to use SPF sun cream AND insect repellent before any exposure to the sun. Don’t forget you can still burn through your compression hosiery. Some patients find applying sun cream before putting on their compression garments helps. Having tried doing that, I personally found it was difficult to get my compression sleeve on and to stay up too. Whilst in a car or sitting in direct sunlight do ensure that the affected limb is covered. It’s best to avoid extreme temperature as too much heat can increase swelling of the affected limb(s) rooms and don’t sit too close to heat sources such as bar-b-ques and outdoor heaters. Using a cooling spray, iced water on a spray bottle works well, on your compression garment can help cool the affected limb and yourself Incidentally, if you sit out on concrete or by a whitewashed wall – the sun’s rays also reflect off these. Ultraviolet rays are invisible and are present in every season, so sun protection isn’t something that you should reserve for a summer beach day. On a cloudy day, up to 80% of UV exposure remains as compared to a sunny day. UVA light can also pass through windows, even when you are indoors or in your car. A tip from skin consultants - wear a face cream with a minimum SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 all year round. Protecting skin from the sun is the best Anti-Ageing treatment there is.

Self help to ease your pain isn’t a one size fits all technique that works for everyone. The key is to finding something that works for you that you find calming rather than something that causes you more stress than its releasing. Stress alone can trigger pain signals, flaring up existing pain and also causing new pain and inflammation. Movement and relaxation are the healthiest ways to cope with stress. By moving more you burn up the stress hormones that worsen pain as it triggers the release of the body’s natural painkillers, endorphins and feel good hormones such as dopamine. Strengthening muscles help protect and heal, start low, go slow and build up gently. Simple stretches can ultimately lessen pain. Calming down and relaxing, mind/body therapies may also be worth considering as is joining in a group session whereby you receive the necessary support and are with other likeminded people. Jo Nichols has come to CPSG on many occasion and members of the group, in their own time and in their own way, have participated in these sessions. Being a pain sufferer herself Jo is fully supportive and her sessions are always fun, always to music and always to suit people’s needs. Always do what is right for you, if you are not sure seek advice first before committing yourself. CPSG remain positive that meetings can resume in September. Currently venues for coffee morning are being researched. Visit the group website for all the details. www. chronicpainsupportgroup.co.uk or email any queries to info@chronicpainsupportgroup.co.uk Meanwhile stay safe, stay positive, keep talking and keep being kind to yourself! 36 | JULY 2021

38 | JULY 2021
S
FOOD & DRINK Take burgers to the next level by stuffing them with cheddar and mozzarella for a gooey centre, and topping them with a dollop of herby burger sauce
INGREDIENTS:
METHOD:
1½ tbsp olive oil
Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion with a good pinch of salt for 15 mins until soft and translucent. Add the pancetta and cook for 5 mins more, then add the garlic and thyme, and cook for 2 mins. Remove from the heat and leave to cool for 15 mins.
1 onion, very finely chopped 70g smoked pancetta, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 4 thyme sprigs, leaves picked 500g lean beef mince (no more than 10% fat) 50g fresh breadcrumbs 1 egg yolk 60g mature cheddar, grated 60g grated mozzarella For the herby burger sauce 120g mayonnaise 2½ tsp English mustard ½ small bunch of parsley, finely chopped ½ small bunch of basil 50g baby gherkins, finely chopped To serve 4 seeded burger buns, split 2-3 Little Gem lettuces, leaves separated 2 ripe tomatoes, sliced Crispy fried onions
Tip the mince into a large bowl. Massage with your hands for 5 mins to tenderise the meat, then add the cooled onion mix, the breadcrumbs and egg yolk. Season generously. Divide evenly into four, weighing for accuracy, if you like. Mix the cheddar and mozzarella together. Form the beef portions into patties, patting each into a 10cm round. Divide the cheese mixture into four, and, in your hands, form each portion into a firm ball, then press into a roughly 4cm disc. Working one at a time, put a cheese disc into the centre of a beef patty, then bring the meat around the cheese to cover. Lightly pat with the palm of your hand to flatten slightly, then chill, covered, for at least 30 mins or up to 48 hrs. Make the sauce by whizzing the mayonnaise, mustard and herbs together in a small food processor. Stir through the gherkins, then cover and chill until ready to use. Light the barbecue. When the flames have died down, grill the burgers on each side for 4-5 mins until charred (if you don’t have a barbecue, see tip, below). Wrap individually in foil and leave on the barbecue for 5-7 mins so the cheese centre melts. Grill the buns, cut-side down, for 1-2 mins until toasted. Spread all the cut sides with the sauce, then fill with the beef patties, lettuce, tomatoes and crispy onions. Prep time: 45 mins Total time: 35 mins Serves: 4 JULY 2021 | 39

WATERMELON PROSECCO SORBET SLUSHIES What better way to end a garden party than with a cocktail/sorbet combo? These watermelon prosecco slushies are refreshing with a real kick
INGREDIENTS: 1 watermelon (about 2kg) 200ml prosecco, plus a little extra 3 mint sprigs, plus extra to serve ½ lemon, zest pared 50g sugar
METHOD: Cut the watermelon into quarters and remove the pips using a teaspoon. If you’re serving the same day or next day, keep six wedges or slices back for decorating and chill. Cut the flesh into 3cm cubes (you should have about 1kg fruit, with the rind discarded) and sit in a baking parchment-lined container where the cubes fit snugly. Pour the prosecco over the fruit, cover and freeze for 4 hrs, or up to 1 week. Put the mint, lemon and sugar in a small pan with 50ml water, and bring to a gentle simmer for 3-5 mins until the sugar dissolves and turns syrupy. Cover and leave to cool completely, then strain. Put the frozen prosecco-soaked watermelon cubes in a food processor with the sugar syrup. Blend well, stopping and pushing the mixture towards the blades with a spatula every few seconds, if you need to, until it’s a slushy consistency. Add a splash more prosecco to make a smooth slush. Spoon or pour into six chilled glasses. Garnish with the chilled watermelon wedges and little mint sprigs.

Green Shoots for Start-ups Chris Ridgeon
Despite the tough times that many Moreton Hall businesses have experienced over the last 18-months we have also seen entrepreneurs starting up their own ventures. Difficult times may still lay ahead for many sectors but Covid-19 has boosted on-line businesses across a much broader sector than just that of retail. We have become used to ‘you’re on mute’ as the catchphrase of 2020-21 for on-line meetings with virtual sewing classes, fitness and yoga, amongst others, now commonplace. Not all of these ventures will be permanent. For those with a solid business plan the current environment could be the time to take that leap of faith. In difficult economic circumstances, entrepreneur start-ups can often take advantage of more accessible borrowing and lower interest rates. The misery for hospitality, retail, arts and construction has been well catalogued. However, as past recessions have shown, entrepreneurs come into their own. Reasons for starting-up in the current climate are varied. Sheer necessity has driven many, with Covid-19 causing problems which people needed to resolve, and new businesses have been born out of necessity. If you are thinking of launching your own business, our start-up advisers at our office in Skyliner Way will be delighted to help.

RECYCLED SUN CATCHERS
YOU WILL NEED:
Clear plastic lids (from yoghurt pots or cream) coloured ribbon or string, tissue paper, PVA glue and glitter optional.
n Make a hole in the lid and hang
the ribbon or string from it. This will be the top of your design. n Paint glue all over the lid and stick down your pieces of tissue paper either randomly or to make a shape like the bumble bee and rainbow. n Be careful not to overlap the tissue paper too much as the thinner the layer the brighter the colours when the sun shines through n When the tissue paper is dry place a layer of glue over the top to secure it all. n Add some glue around the rim of the lid and dip in glitter. Shake off the remaining glitter that hasn’t stuck. n Hang up in a window with sellotape. 48 | JULY 2021

IT’S JULY’S SPOTLIGHT ON CHALK STREAMS
T
his month we are going to focus on something local and quite rare. Did you know there are only 200 to 300 chalk streams in the world and 2 of them flow through Bury St Edmunds. The Lark and the Linnet look like most rivers but they are quite special, with pure, clear, water coming from underground chalk aquifers and springs. They flow across flinty gravel beds and are perfect sources of clean water, ideal for a myriad of organisms and plants. As a town we should cherish these wonderful ecosystems and keep them healthy, they are a national treasure and we must take more responsibility for their deteriorating condition. Unfortunately they are overused and undervalued, there are multiple sources of pollution that find their way into the rivers. These include, accidental / deliberate outflow from sewage works, effluent from businesses, farming run-off, septic tanks, and many more. On top of this we extract huge volumes of water from the rivers causing a reduction of flow and mass silting which destroys many of the bottom living organisms and leads to river blockages. Our Chalk streams could be a great asset for our town which we can use to attract more visitors. There has been a realisation that we need to do more to help the Lark and the Linnet and organisations are now working together to try and reverse the degradation of these unique waterways. Who knows, maybe one day we will see Brown trout rising to take flies from the surface of the Lark in Abbeygate gardens. I can but dream.
Next month I will tell you more about organisations trying to help our Chalk streams and more importantly what you can do to help. In the meantime google ‘Chalk streams’ and be amazed!

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum Up and Running Well, Covid’s grip continues! BUT as the Museum opened in May the response from all our visitors has been tremendous. Six weeks in, group visits, celebrities, aircraft (Vintage Piper Club) – their pilot’s and friends - bringing over 300 plus visitor’s. What a fantastic response to our local ‘gem’. This warrants a very BIG thank you to every visitor. Thank you also for the donations which have been made. The Museum is FREE and relies on your generosity to keep going. Thank you to all the volunteers that have been on hand for you. Last month I highlighted that the airfield is ACTIVE. It has been so busy that the Flight Training School, Skyward is celebrating the success where FOUR students have passed their final tests, two have revallidated, four have passed the Radio (R/T) exams and one has ‘gone solo’. Congratulations to them all. They have also had over 50 visiting aircraft, those on a Sunday dropping in for the tea/coffee with ‘homemade’ cakes! Please, if you are on the airfield (jogging, walking, dog walking) look out for aircraft and keep away from them – STAY SAFE. Writing this article each month gives me the opportunity to review how the airfield operated in the 40’s. I find myself transported back to a time of no electric cars, no central heating, no micro-waves, no computers, no mobile ‘phones – and a lot of other modern items we ‘take for granted’! For over three years American armed forces personnel lived here on the airfield. Billeted in Nissen Huts with a single stove for heating (and boiling the kettle on), working on the aircraft at night (in the dark because of the ‘blackout’) and in the cold of winter – lots of snow! How would you have managed? Could you have lived without your mobile or laptop? This leads me on to Re-enactments – reliving the history of those hard days and times. Another group have visited on Sunday 27th June. 3 Commando D Company “Moonlight Raiders” are a group of enthusiasts who have used the Museum and the grounds to help ‘bring back’ the time very few people experienced. We hope they had a great day with us and visitors enjoyed seen history ‘come alive’. The planned ‘Visit to the Museum’ for aircraft, pilots and vehicles in September will attract visitors and be a special weekend. Plans are moving ahead for this event which will fundraise for the ‘North Weald Airfield Marshallers’ and the Museum. The event two years ago saw 150 aircraft visit over the two days. We are hoping to exceed this, especially if the weather is kind. I finish with my favourite bit – Mention the Cake! Thank you for supporting the Museum, making donations, seeing the new exhibits and enjoying the CAKE! Plenty more to come over the summer months but We Need YOU!! Sunday’s 10am to 4pm – Tea & Cake!!!! ALL VERY WELCOME

MORETON HALL
During the course of 2021 we have been promised many times that lockdown is coming to an end. Whilst restrictions might gradually be lifted, thus far every time the government makes a promise it seems that statistics, infections and fatalities prevent the end of lockdown as we all want it to.
One of the effects of this is to make everybody more and more anxious. Everyone feels under pressure. Nobody can make any plans. Those who do and try to carry them out are often severely frustrated. We miss our friends and our families. We miss normality. We miss doing all the things that we had taken for granted throughout our lives and at the moment can no longer do. No wonder so many people are feeling depressed, are unable to sleep and therefore lack energy or enthusiasm. This in its turn makes us feel more unwell and yes, even more depressed. What can we do? The answer is that there is very little we can do other than wait. Yet waiting, showing patience with ourselves and with others is often a very hard thing indeed to do. Jesus was aware of the great pressures that were on the people around him during his lifetime on Earth. They had no NHS, so often pestilence and plague ripped through whole communities far worse than Covid19 has. People faced all the problems of unemployment without any welfare system to support them. There was nobody to help you other than your own family; and if you lost them or they rejected you, you were in deep trouble.
That is why when He says to people ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled, trust in God, trust also in me’ it brought great comfort to those who heard Him. Jesus Christ always delivers on His promises. Even death could not defeat Him. He went on to tell His people not to worry about things like food and drink, clothing, where to live and what to do. He reassured them that God knew all about them and would supply them in due time. Today we do have lots of things that support us that were not available in His time but nevertheless we are still burdened down by anxiety. However, His promises can still bring great help and comfort to us all. When we put our trust in Jesus something wonderful begins to happen. We really do receive a peace that passes all understanding. We also get a new focus to our lives, often on those who are in worse need than ourselves. We also find fresh energy, fresh strength and, perhaps best of all, a new hope - a hope that there is someone who cares; someone who is involved; someone who is actively helping us get through this dark time. We see His help through the actions
of others; through their kindness to us; through the promises we receive in scripture; and the support of community where and when it can be found. As a Christian and as a pastor I have been able to see throughout the pandemic lots of people achieve far more, and find peace and serenity despite being burdened with anxiety. It is not so much that the things we worry about go away, but that we find the strength to carry on and bring life and joy to others. The words of Jesus are something I want to share with you and I repeat them for your benefit: ‘Do not let you hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.’ I have been trusting Jesus for over forty years, and I have found He has never let me down. He has brought me and my family through all the dark times we have had to face. I pray you can find the same peace by doing the same yourselves.
With every good wish,
Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

WHAT’S ON
Coming up this summer... Absurd Person Singular By Alan Ayckbourn Tuesday 10th to Saturday 14 August Three married couples. Three kitchens. Three Christmas parties. Sidney Hopcroft, a small-time tradesman, persuades wife Jane to throw a party hoping to find favour with a bank manager and local architect. As celebrations begin, class differences and naked ambition combine to hilarious effect as, one by one, the characters seek refuge in Jane’s kitchen. Over the next two years, the Jacksons and Brewster-Wrights take turns to host festivities. But Sidney’s star has begun to rise and roles are increasingly reversed as the cracks in the other couples’ marriages begin to show. Alan Ayckbourn’s comic masterpiece of social climbing in 1970s suburbia fuses a potent mix of farce and black comedy.
Holes by Louis Sachar. A Theatre Royal Production Friday 20 August to Saturday 4 September This is a Theatre Royal production where young people from our Summer School perform alongside a cast of professional actors. Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-greatgrandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnatses. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a detention centre, Camp Green Lake, where the inmates build character by spending all day, every day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. But there are an awful lot of holes. It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize there’s more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. They are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. But what could be buried under a dried-up lake? Louis Sachar’s multi-million bestselling novel is adapted for the stage by the author himself in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption. Please Note: This production, as with the book, tackles some darker topics. However, these are mainly referred to rather than portrayed on stage. Age Guidance: 9+. This is just guidance, please use your own judgement concerning bringing younger children. Access Performances: Audio Described/Captioned/Touch Tour: Thu 26 August, 2pm & 7.30pm

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE
Waiting is good for us I wonder how good you are at waiting? I’m terrible at it. Particularly if I’m waiting for a company to answer the phone and I’m listening to a fake Coldplay song for the 7th time. Waiting seems to be a frustrating dimension of modern life, doesn’t it? Indeed, we always seem to be waiting for something… We had to wait ages for the 17th May, then we were waiting for the 21st June – and it didn’t happen. Personally, I was really desperate for the Euros to begin. But the truth is that we all hate waiting because we’re impatient. A couple of months ago, Southgate celebrated Pentecost Sunday, which marks what some people think of as the birth of the Christian church. After the resurrection, the first disciples had met the risen Jesus numerous times and so their doubts had been replaced by the kind of excitement a child experiences on Christmas Day. But then Jesus unexpectedly told them to do nothing - to wait for 40 days. How easy would you have found that? I’d have found it very frustrating. Especially now the Premier League’s finished. And yet, eventually the early Church found it fruitful, very fruitful - because it drew them together, to pray together. And then God showed up big time! In other words, he honoured his promises, and their obedience, by doing what only God can do. He gave them an encounter with him. An experience of God that energised, empowered and emboldened them. Suddenly, they were experiencing the fruit of waiting and of using their time to pray. Without warning, God changed their circumstances miraculously. So, if you are frustrated and tired of waiting for a situation in your life to change, try turning your time of waiting into a time of praying. Perhaps then, you will hear, see and experience God working; unexpectedly, miraculously and fruitfully. And just maybe... that was the point of Pentecost… to teach us that whatever God does, it is always worth waiting for.
Rev Mike Simm. Minister of Southgate Church
