EDITOR’S LETTER
WELCOME TO THE
JUNE
ISSUE
Hello and welcome to the June issue! Yippee! We are finally into Summer, the birds are singing in the morning (very early too!!) and some of us are planning summer breaks. We haven’t booked up anything yet, but with our holiday fashion on page 72, I am very tempted to purchase a few items to wear on the beach (even if it ends up being Felixstowe beach). Jeremy has had the BBQ out a lot lately and on page 30 if you have any vegetarians in the family like us, the Halloumi Kebabs look very tasty. On page 34 there is a lovely Peach Sangria to wash them down nicely too. If you want to get your face make up free and looking fab, try our crossword competition on page 46, for a chance to win a Dermologica Facial by Levette’s Beauty, based on Moreton Hall Estate! Good luck!

Brought to you by Councillor Frank Warby

Welcome to June, half way through 2018. Where have the months gone? Mayor Making, Royal Weddings, FA Cup final, a new Council year and probably the last council as we know it now this time next year we will have a larger council which is incorporating Forest Heath and St. Edmunds Borough Councils. There will also be a change to our boundaries, some of Moreton Hall might be part of Eastgate Ward - so a lot of changes, it’s a game of watch and see.
NEW PLAY AREA At last the play area is now in full swing (pardon the pun!). It has been welcomed by most people but we have had a few complaints on facebook as follows, one lady brought her daughter early one morning and complained the grass was wet and the equipment was also wet, probably the morning dew. Another did not like that she had to push the swings! Sadly they are not automatic. However the compliments far outweigh the complaints. There are no signs stating that children should be accompanied by an adult, however, I think this would be a good idea, the play area is safe but children do and will hurt themselves so may need someone to care for them. Airfield play area, Taylor Wimpy who still control this playfield have been asked to help sort out the problems there, I would like to remind all dog owners that dogs are not allowed in or on play areas. 10 | JUNE 2018
vandalism
I don’t know what some people have been up to the last few months, smashed glass in bus shelters, cycle signs pulled down, rubbish strewn everywhere, there are lots of complaints on facebook by people disgusted by the way the estate is going. What we, the elected councillors are doing about it, well apart from reporting the problems to the appropriate departments, what else can we do? Regarding litter, my wife and I take a shopping bag with us whenever we walk our dog and collect whatever litter, including dog foul is about, however, we cannot cover the whole estate, perhaps if other people did the same the estate would look a lot better. Please help to keep your area cleaner.
TROUBLE HOT SPOTS It’s alarming to read on facebook about the problems regarding a flasher operating along the pathway from Abbots Green towards Tesco, from what I hear someone has approached the police regarding this and hopefully it has ended.
BOY RACERS, again this has been reported on facebook but I have not had any complaints, and will keep an eye on this. If you see or hear them please email me. DRUGS. Again I have had people complaining about seeing people doing drugs so please, if you are worried, report it to the police on 101 or direct to 999.
YOUTH CLUB
Now the weather is getting warmer and lighter nights the club is filling up with a good mixture of boys and girls. This means we urgently need some more helpers. If you can spare one night a month to help that would be great. Let’s keep the club going for our children. Thank you. Your children, their club, we need new people with new ideas, we are a healthy club money wise help us spend it wisely.
MOUNT FARM SURGEY I have been asked again to put this in because people are still not informing the surgery if they are unable to keep appointments, so many appointments missed means people who need to see a doctor have to wait longer because doctor and nurses are booked up. Please adhere to the instruction given to you by the surgery, if you are unable to keep your appointment let the surgery know then someone can use your slot, simply phone the surgery and tell them and they can make an appointment to suit your time. Don’t waste our doctors or nurses time.
That’s all for now, until next time take care, Frank Warby JUNE 2018 | 11

It’s Bin Emotional
This month, our rubbish, or more specifically litter and public spaces. There is some good and bad news. The bad. I have had specific daily reports of litter, broken glass on the football fields, beer cans in the woods, dog fouling and even Vicky’s wheelie bin going on tour around the Tassel Road area! Some comments have been quite barbed, too, along the lines of “what is the Council doing about this?” Well, let’s remember that the Council doesn’t drop litter in the first place! We must first and foremost point the finger at those creating the waste and litter and implore them to find a bin, go to the tip or take their rubbish home. Onto the good, we at the Council have been doing all we can to clear up after those too lazy to do it themselves. We have moved bins around to cover more dirty areas, worked with local businesses and sent our numerous clean-up teams to target bad areas. There are some things we can’t do, for instance the responsibility for some land lies with private individuals or organisations like the Highways Agency, where safety or permissions need to be sought. Now onto the really good. I think there were three stand-out acts last month. Firstly, the staff at Tesco Express have cleared out the area near Home Covert and the Doctors where there appeared to have been dumped waste and fly tipping. This wasn’t there responsibility or their area, so thank you very much. Secondly, many thanks to Mo Burton, who has taken it upon herself to provide bags for dog waste at Natterers Wood – it really shouldn’t come to this, but huge thanks for your efforts. Thirdly, Woodland Ways have cleared a couple of areas, specifically woods near Mount Road and the Orchard at Sebert Road. This included picking up after others. Again, many thanks. It is usual that us councillors are contacted more or less weekly on some sort of litter or waste issue, whether that be our domestic bin collections, general litter, public bins, dog mess or fly tipping. It does, however, seem to have dramatically escalated over the last few weeks. This may be down to the better weather and our lovely new parks opening or it may be due to increasing apathy. Whatever it is, I think we must remember that it is all our responsibility to keep our area tidy. We will do what we can, but if you know of any culprits, please let’s work together as a community and stop polluting our beautiful spaces.

A letter was sent on the 10th April to County Councillor Jane Storey the County Council Cabinet member with responsibility for Highways requesting a public meeting to discuss the various traffic issues and increase in HGV traffic affecting Moreton Hall. So far, no reply, but, the ruling Conservative Group on the County Council have had a change of leadership and we await the name of the new Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways which should be known by the time this article appears. They will be invited over for a public meeting to which all residents will be invited. It is nice to see the new Heldhaw Road play area open and congratulations to Councillors Pete Thompson and Frank Warby for facilitating this. The trailer in the Hotel Car Park has finally gone and thanks are due to Borough and County Councillor Trevor Beckwith for his persistence in pushing for its removal. Every resident on Moreton Hall is a member of the Residents Association. There is no subscription and our committee meetings which are held every two months and our Annual General Meeting are open to residents. We are always looking for volunteers especially from the younger generation. We meet at the community centre and you are always welcome to attend and raise your concerns.
area as well as the Cabinet member at St Edmundsbury with responsibility for Family and Communities and arrange as soon as we can an open meeting for all residents which we will publicise when arranged. However, in the meantime the Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore is holding an open public meeting on Thursday 12 July at The Newbury Community Centre, St Olaves Road, Howard Estate, Bury St Edmunds IP32 6RW from 7pm to 8.30pm with refreshments at 6.40 pm so if you are dissatisfied with recent events or have other issues you wish to raise do go along. We await the boundary commissions report on wards for the new West Suffolk Council. At the moment Moreton hall has 3 Borough Councillors. A proposal is on the table to move part of Moreton Hall into Eastgate Ward and have two councillors for the new Eastgate and new Moreton Hall Wards. This does not make sense to the Residents Association as Moreton Hall is an established community in its own right and separated from the town by the A14. We are told the reasoning is to have equal numbers of electors per ward across the new council. MHRA have made representations to St Edmundsbury and are investigating making representations directly to the Boundary Commission who will make the final decision.
This happened at our May meeting when concerned residents raised the issue of antisocial behaviour, the pointless breaking of the bus shelters glass, people not picking up after their dogs, the boy racers, inconsiderate parking, parking on verges, burglary, litter, amongst other things and a lack of an active police presence on Moreton Hall.
The dates of our meetings for the rest of 2018 are as follows all at the Community Centre. COMMITTEE MEETINGS Thursday 5th July, Thursday 13th September, Thursday 8th November 7.30pm at the Community Centre. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Wednesday 21st November 7pm.

ABBOTS GREEN Community Primary School
As always, there has been a lot going on at Abbots Green recently! We have been extremely active with children in Years 4 & 5 getting on their bikes with the Bikeability programme. Year 4 learned about basic cycle safety, and Year 5 learned the practical skills required to cycle on today’s roads. Years 1 to 4 skipped like crazy when they took part in the Skip2BFit skipping workshop. And our Reception children got active with a Tennis Workshop, led by Culford Tennis Centre. Parents of children in our Reception Classes enjoyed coming into school to join their child for ‘Project Morning.’ Together they produced some fabulous small world gardens within a shoe box. The Reception children also had their Ugly Bug Ball. In the week prior to the ball they made posters and wrote invitations. When the ball finally arrived they dressed up as their favourite insects, made healthy fruit kebabs, played games and had fun together. Our Year 5 children have continued with a series of transition events at Sybil Andrews Academy, including a fabulous Science Experience Day. On the subject of Science, Year 4 had a fabulous time when ‘Mad Science’ visited the school and taught them more about current and static electricity. We all supported Miss Rutterford, one of our Learning Support Assistants, as she fundraised to purchase expandable-soled shoes for children in a Kenyan school. Miss Rutterford will be visiting Kenya in the May half term to volunteer there. To fundraise for the special shoes children at Abbots Green donned their own fanciest footwear in return for a £1 donation and stepped out in style. And finally, we had a wonderful Afternoon Tea together on the school field to celebrate the recent Royal Wedding! We all wore red, white or blue for the event and even formed our very own human Union Jack – what a fun time!

Trenica King appointed permanent headteacher at Sybil Andrews Academy The new headteacher of Sybil Andrews Academy has spoken of her excitement at leading the school – and continuing to foster strong relations with the local community. Trenica King had initially joined the Bury St Edmunds school as interim headteacher after Andy Prestoe stepped down at half-term. But after the school attracted a “strong calibre of shortlisted candidates”, Trenica has now been appointed as permanent headteacher with immediate effect.
working with all the feeder primary schools and community partners.” Trenica, a previous winner of the national Teacher of the Year award, has had 10 years of senior leadership experience in secondary schools, including three years as headteacher at New Rickstones Academy in Witham. Asked about her aims for the school, she added: “A school can only become great when you have a strong working relationship between parents, students and staff all working together for the best interests of young people.
She said: “I am thrilled to be appointed as I knew as soon as I started as interim headteacher, I wanted to stay here on a permanent basis.
“I am really looking forward to meeting all the parents and other interested parties and we will be having some ‘meet the headteacher’ events in the near future.”
“There is this lovely atmosphere from the first moment you walk into the building. I have been hugely impressed by the calibre of staff, there is a clear direction and passion among them and students are progressing very well.
Paul Rayner, chair of governors, said: “We are delighted to appoint Trenica King as the new permanent headteacher of Sybil Andrews Academy following a thorough interview process.
“I am really excited and delighted that we can all start making an impact during the summer term before we take on an extra 200 students from September.
“She was the outstanding candidate among a strong calibre of shortlisted applicants. She brings with her great experience and a huge amount of enthusiasm and vision for our school.

Hedgehogs in Moreton Hall
D
on’t we all cherish the sound of hedgehogs snuffling around our gardens? The small eyes peeping out at you? We all love hedgehogs and having one in our garden can be very exciting. Because of this, however, it may come as a shock to hear that there has been a huge decline of hedgehog sightings. We’ve lost a third of our hedgehogs in the last ten years. This could be for several reasons: l Impermeable garden fences and walls can limit the area of land connections. l Garden tidying can mean there are less foraging areas and places for hibernation. l Chemicals and slug pellets can kill the bugs that hedgehogs eat. These are just a few of the reasons that hedgehogs are disappearing from our gardens. But you can help them! There are things we can do to save our little spikey friends:
l Make holes in your garden fence to allow hedgehogs to move from garden to garden. l Create hedgehog-friendly garden features, such as: log piles, leaf piles, compost heap, ponds, wildflower patches etc… l Research into what hedgehogs can eat and leave it out overnight. See if it’s gone by the morning! l Make a hedgehog house and leave it in your garden, tucked away. These are just a few ways we can help save hedgehogs. Dear reader,
We are excited to announce the launch of the My WiSH Charity World War 1 Trail in conjunction with Our Bury St Edmunds. The trail is part of The Every Heart Matters £500,000 appeal which will fund a diagnostic unit to complete the state of the art cardiac suite being built at the West Suffolk Hospital. The trail will consist of 18 pieces commissioned by local artists and sculptors. These spectacular art pieces will be displayed all around the town highlighting the Great War to commemorate 100 years since the war ended. They will be on show from July 21, through to Armistice Day, on November 11. We are extremely thankful to Treatt, the leading sponsors for the trail and Daemmon Reeve, group CEO, said; ‘It’s fantastic to be able to support this ambitious and exciting project which remembers the bravery of those who fought in World War One and is also helping to raise the £500,000 needed to fund the new cardiac centre at the hospital.’ Engineering artist Den Humphrey, owner of Out of Our Tree workshop is currently creating an oak bench which will be 4ft high and up to

20ft long. Being kindly sponsored by Meredith Greengrass funeral directors, it will feature wooden poppies which can be purchased with a name, tribute or special message of dedication embedded. This poppy will then be returned to the buyer after the trail finishes. If you would like to purchase a poppy then please head over to our website. If you can’t wait until July, when we launch our trail, and want to see one of the stunning art pieces now, then head over to Chelmer Fine Art Gallery, in the Traverse, as on display until June 8 is a stunning metal bicycle sculpture depicting the Suffolk Cycling Battalion created by artist Trudi Edmunds. The bike has a particular significance to Trudi as her great, great uncle was a member of the battalion and served in the Great War which claimed his life when he was just 20 years old. The 19th hole -
Welcome back to the 19th hole, we find ourselves with some great golf to watch and some lovely conditions to play in this month.
I hope everyone’s golf is going well and you are enjoying every minute of summer golf, there is no better feeling than setting off to play in the sunshine. June is another month packed with great tournaments from the tours and of course we have the second MAJOR of the year with the US OPEN this month. Listed below are the competitions you have to look forward to this month. European Tour SHOT CLOCK MASTERS, US OPEN, BMW INTERNATIONAL OPEN, HNA OPEN DE FRANCE PGA Tour THE MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT, FEDEX ST. JUDE CLASSIC, US OPEN, TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP, THE NATIONAL
US OPEN Shinnecock Hills will be a great test for the worlds best players this year, it has under gone a massive renovation since the last US Open was hosted at the golf course. The USGA will set the course up in traditional US Open style, the course will be long and tough and let’s hope it makes for a great championship that goes down to the last hole. My pick for the US OPEN is…... JUSTIN ROSE, he 2016 Olympic Champion has wins on so many of the world’s greatest courses. Places like Muirfield Village, Aronimink, Cog Hill, Merion and Congressional. When it comes to prestigious venues, Shinnecock Hills is right near the top of the list. The difficult course in the Hamptons always produces a champion that is a complete player. That’s precisely what Rose is.
COACHES CORNER – READY... STEADY…GO!! This month we are looking at trigger movements and how they can help you commit to hitting better golf shots on the golf course. These small movements or feelings can help you make a more committed and have smoother movements. They can also help if you find yourself stood over the ball for a long time, these will allow you to pull the trigger and hit the shot far sooner. Look at the image of the golfer holding a bucket in this section, if this bucket was full of water some of us would struggle to move this into a back swing position. However, with a small trigger movement forward this motion becomes easier and we would be able to move the bucket further and smoother. This can be the same in your golf game, from putting to full swings a small movement or feeling that allows you to get your swing motion started a lot smoother. This could be a push of the hands, a bounce or movement of the club head whatever works for you to get your golf swing moving at the same point in your routine. Here are two examples from the worlds best players
If you would like more information on this topic or any other area of your game, then please feel free to contact me. If you quote MHD or SGD when booking your first lesson with me then you will receive £5 off, below are my contact details please don’t hesitate to contact me.

CASA – a truly independent experience Casa’s new lunch menu offers fresh, tasty dishes with plenty of healthy options. This menu runs alongside their existing and popular TAPAS lunch deal. PICK and MIX Maria, executive chef, said that she wanted to create a menu that was exciting and could also be prepared and served quickly for those diners needing to get back to work.
VOUCHER
“The challenges of dietary requirements mean a flexible approach to customers is vital” she says. Her passion for the food CASA serve and her enthusiasm for the customer experience bubbles out. She continues ‘This is a great time of year with so many fresh ingredients
available to create the Mediterranean inspired food I love the most.” The lovely sunny terrace, the beautifully decorated restaurant with fairy lit gazebos and the holiday style background music transports you to a holiday destination. The smells from the kitchen are hard to resist! Maria and her team were also baking a range of delicious cakes to serve alongside the ice cream sundaes and locally roasted coffee and teas. Unsurprisingly – these were very yummy and most were gluten free and many were also vegan…you would never know though. Their new opening hours reflect the fact that you can now pop in for coffee, cake, wine, ice cream from mid-morning – right through till evening.

Going Out Out BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD
I don’t get out much. I know
that will shock many of you, but it’s true. My idea of a wild night is a long run followed by some left over pasta bake and glass of cheap Pinot Grigio in front of whatever random free film Amazon Prime has to offer. However, I think it’s healthy to broaden ones horizons from time to time. So with that in mind, I recently went ‘out out’ on a Saturday night. I can run a marathon up Snowdon or tackle some pretty extreme adventure races, but for me, staying up partying after midnight is harder than any of those. I was never really a late night person even when I was younger. Now, three children and 20 years later, I struggle to function after 10pm, and that’s even before you add alcohol into the mix. The beers at the pub were, on the whole, civilised. After
42 | JUNE 2018
that however, I found myself in small dark cellar with 20 goths, ears bleeding, to the most harsh thrash metal and punk I’ve ever heard (not that I’ve heard that much to be honest). A short while later I was in a bar in town facing a tray of Jaeger Bombs (they didn’t even exist when I last went out) to the backdrop of cheesy 80’s classics assaulting my eardrums. Throughout all of this my mind kept drifting back, via the Jaeger Bomb blur, to a couple of key questions, which I’ll be honest, I didn’t have the nerve to ask anyone (and I wouldn’t have heard their answer over the Abba melody anyway). Firstly; what have they done with their children? I mean, couples out together, without children!? Does that actually happen after you hit your thirties? Secondly; do they do this
every week? This was a once in a decade night out for me, but I got the distinct feeling many of the people around me were regulars. If they do, then wow. Fair play to them. Makes my ultra running training regime seem pretty lame. The next day I was up as normal to take the kids round junior parkrun, followed by a family day trip to Bressingham. A far cry from the 1990’s, when I would spend the next day slumped on the sofa falling asleep in front of the grand prix. It was then I remembered the other reason why I don’t do late nights anymore. The relentless momentum of family life goes on regardless of whether you get in at 10pm or 2am. The kids don’t care, they still want to play with daddy, and rightly so. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Glue stick.2 lollipop sticks, a small piece of Sellotape and a black sharpie pen. Cut the 2 sheets of red paper in half lengthways and keep 3 strips. Stick the green strip onto the edge of the red paper using glue stick Do this to all 3 sheets making sure they line up exactly Stick the white over the join where the green meets the red Do this to the reverse too Using a black sharpie pens draw some pips on the red paper front Concertina fold all 3 bits of paper in 1cm width folds Glue them together so they form one long sheet of paper Glue a lollipop stick into the start fold and the other into the end fold • Seal the bottom with some Sellotape. Garden Confidential
by Paul Clarke
What to do in your garden in June... With the longest daylight hours of the year June is the month to really enjoy your garden. In the town centre you can visit the 32nd Bury Hidden Gardens on the 17th June. Tickets are available in advance from The Apex and on the day from the marquee on Angel Hill, Bury. Garden Ponds are full of interest and as long as they kept safe from young children always provide an interesting focal point. Our garden pond has had a great amount of tadpoles this year. The pond also has many newts and is being visited by damsel flies. In June the Water Lillies will come into flower the leaves of which have provided the growing tadpoles a shallow warm spot to swim.

POPPIES 62 | JUNE 2018
The Papaver family is diverse, including annuals, biennials and perennials. As they are so easy to grow probably best to acquire seed from a friend or neighbour. You can sow directly outdoor in the Spring or Autumn. As long as you water regularly germination will take between a week to one month. Or alternatively sow in seed trays. Most poppies enjoy a sunny border in rich fertile soil. You will need to deadhead regularly if you want the blooms to continue all summer. Cut back the old foliage to ground level in autumn. As poppies self seed freely deadhead to prevent these or alternatively leave so this occurs Types of poppies include the Oriental poppy such as the Beauty of Livermere which will need support as they grow to 1 metre. The common red poppy that is used in remembrance is often seen in fields that have been disturbed. Welsh Poppy which is bright yellow and will do well in shade. However look at any seed catalogue and you can choose any colour you wish.
Pauls jobs for the month General Maintenance
Flower Garden
n Use your hoe regularly to get on top of the annual weeds which seem to spring up overnight! n Do a night patrol with a torch and the kids to collect slugs and snails. Empty contents on to bird table in the morning! n Remove blanket weed from ponds and add to your compost heap n Many house plants will enjoy a few weeks outdoors in June as long as you remember to water them.
n The risk of frost is over so full steam ahead now with planting containers and hanging baskets with summer bedding plants n When your Hardy Geraniums have finished flowering you can cut them back for a second, smaller flush of flowers and fresh foliage. n Remove dead foliage from your spring flowering bulbs but only after it has died back naturally. n Divide big clumps of Aubretia n Look out for Lily Beetles. n Plant some Nicotiana for some evening scent
Lawn Maintenance n Lawns can be cut on lower settings in June. n Fertilize the lawn this month.
This months poem...
Vegetable and Fruit Garden n Protect your currant fruits from the birds with netting n Sow outdoors: Beetroot, carrots, courgettes, French beans, lettuce, marrow, pak choi, peas, pumpkins, radish, runner beans, salad leaves, sweetcorn and turnips. n Keep rows of onions well watered if it is dry n Earth up potatoes n If you have apple trees you will notice the June drop when small apples will naturally fall from a cluster. However you can improve the quality and size of your apples by removing more.
“Mine is the Month of Roses; yes, and mine The Month of Marriages! All pleasant sights And scents, the fragrance of the blossoming vine, The foliage of the valleys and the heights. Mine are the longest days, the loveliest nights; The mower’s scythe makes music to my ear; I am the mother of all dear delights; I am the fairest daughter of the year.” - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

JUNE’S 5 MONEY AND CO2 SAVING DRIVING TIPS A
ccording to the Government’s National Travel Survey in 2015, the average UK car driver covered around 12,700km. At today’s prices we spend around £777 on fuel and increase our CO2 imprint by about 1,550 kg every year. This month we look at driving and show you ways to save money and reduce your CO2 imprint.
1
2
Make sure your tyres are at the correct pressure
Remove any unnecessary weight from the boot
before you set off and save 1% on your fuel bill. Under inflated tyres create more rolling resistance, so keeping your tyres at the correct pressure will save £7.77 and 15.5kg CO2 a year on average.
Losing 45kg can improve economy by around 2%. Leaving tools or equipment in the boot and driving 150km each week wastes about £10 and increase your CO2 output by 19kg a year.
3 Try working from home at least once a week Not only could you have more family or sleeping time, but the possible savings by avoiding a 50km round trip once a week could be as high as £140 and 275kg CO2 a year.
4
5
Use the right gear for the speed you are travelling A vehicle travelling at 37mph in third gear uses 25% more fuel than it would at the same speed in fifth gear! Don’t make your engine scream!!
EcoFrenzy is a not-for-profit organisation founded by Tony Whittingham and Simon Dry. If you have any queries please visit www.ecofrenzy.com/contact-us or email tony@ecofrenzy.com 64 | JUNE 2018
These ideas can save you £££’s! For more ideas on saving money & the environment visit ecofrenzy.com
Keep your car tuned and serviced it can improve mpg by up to 4%. Using the correct oil is also good for an extra 2%, which could add up to as much as £47 and a reduction of 93kg of CO2 per year.

Culford plays host to acclaimed
international opera company
The London Festival Opera (LFO) is to return to Culford School to give another spellbinding performance. The internationally acclaimed opera company will perform staged highlights in costume from Verdi’s masterpiece La Traviata on Saturday June 16, 2018 at 5pm, which was first performed at La Fenice in Venice in 1853. LFO Artistic Director Philip Blake-Jones said: “There is a unique atmosphere at Culford – the house is magnificent and the splendid façade provides a superb the ‘back-drop’ for the concert and the grounds make a wonderful natural auditorium.” The evening, that will take place on the glorious South Front lawn, will continue with celebrated arias from the operas of Mozart,
Rossini, Bizet and Puccini ending with a patriotic Last Night of the Proms Finale. A select instrumental chamber ensemble will also accompany the performance. The LFO has performed at Culford over the past three years, enthralling audiences with Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Bizet’s Carmen and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Headmaster Julian JohnsonMunday said: “We are delighted to play host to the London Festival Opera and this wonderful event. It promises to be an evening not to be missed!” The LFO assembles artists who have appeared with the major opera companies including the Royal Opera, English National Opera and
Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Artists include Polish soprano Anna Jeruc-Kopec, who has performed to critical acclaim with Opera North and also at the Polish National Opera, Alexander James Edwards, who sang at the Royal Albert Hall recently and David Stephenson who performed with the New Zealand opera. Mr Blake-Jones said: “This a perfect event for the whole family and ideal for a first time visit to the opera. An attitude of gratitude Sometimes it is hard to find the blessings in life. Big things happen and weigh us down, little things pile up to the same effect, all we see are problems. It’s easy to lose perspective and feel as though nothing good ever happens. The world becomes monochrome as all the colour drains away, putting the colour back in can be hard. Many of us struggle, we try to change unchangeable situations or get apologies from people who will never be sorry. Failing to make those changes leaves us feeling powerless and frustrated. It can be hard to reach out and ask for help or even sit down with a friend to talk it through. I can’t emphasis enough how important it is to get help when you need it, be it from a loved one or a professional, there are some wonderful
options in the form of advice givers, support groups, charities, counsellors or doctors ready to help. However there a few things we can do to make our situation lighter on our own. A simple trick is to grow an attitude for gratitude. Imagine a set of old fashioned scales that control the way you perceive the world, good experiences are weighed on one side, bad experiences on the other. How would your scales look today? If the negative side weighs low you probably feel low yourself. You are out of balance and need to take action. There are two ways of doing this, either take off some of the bad stuff which may or may not be possible, or add more good stuff to even things out.
Feeling thankful releases happy hormones in the brain which relax the body and calm the mind - a bit like chocolate but with less calories! If it is hard to think of anything, start small – “That was a nice cup of tea,” or “My chair is comfortable.” Really enjoy the small simple pleasures. Add in bigger things when you can. Make a note if you need to. A nice idea is to keep a journal and jot down three things you are grateful for every day. At the end of the year look back and see what has changed. Be aware of the little things, when something good happens to you, to a loved one, on the news, take note and be thankful. The more good things you can add to the positive side of the scale, the less the challenging stuff will pull you down.
Gemma.

CHURCH NEWS
Christ Church MORETON HALL We live in some pretty frightening times. We are still not sure what the outcome of Bexit will be, and the Middle East continues to be a place of aggression, destruction and death. It is at times such as these we have to ask the question, ‘What really matters?’ The answer to that is ‘our relationships’.
moments. In May it was a great joy to celebrate our Parish Nurse on National Parish Nurse Sunday, 13th May. It was good to see the church so full and to give thanks for the way our Parish Nurse, Lesley, has reached out to so many people in our community over the last few years.
Relationships are so important because in many ways it is all we have. Perhaps you might like to pause and think for yourself ‘what’s the most important relationship I have?’
It was also Christian A id week and once again I want to thank the estate for its extraordinary generosity in welcoming our Christian Aid envelopes and the people who came to collect them. Every 50p we collect saves a life somewhere in the world. I am always humbled and grateful for the generosity that is shown by the people on our estate each year and also the hard work of those who organised the collection in our area and those who delivered and collected the envelopes.
For many people one of their most important relationships is their pet. The joy that people get from caring for animals, taking their dog for a walk, or the companionship they get from their cat, or their bird, or even their fish, is a very important thing and brings enrichment to their lives. One of our church families has just bought themselves a dog and you can see the delight the whole family gets from watching this little puppy grow to maturity and sharing their lives with him. I believe that every pet and animal is a gift from God. That is why we are taking time out at four o’clock in the afternoon of Sunday 24th June to hold our annual Pet Service. We want people to come along and have their animals blessed and we want to celebrate all the ways that God speaks to us through our pets and gives us so much companionship and joy from such positive relationships. Another way we can celebrate relationships is just to look back for a few 82 | JUNE 2018
The third sort of relationship that has been greatly improved recently is our relationship with God. So many people have been involved with the Novena where we prayed, together with the Archbishop of Canterbury and other Christians around the world, for God’s Kingdom to come. It was wonderful to see people coming each morning and evening to pray and those who came to prayer walk round the estate and also to give 24 hours in prayer concluding with a great celebration on Pentecost Sunday. Looking forward we have exciting visiting speakers in our services on the 3rd and 10th of June please see the service sheet or website for more details,

So we have much to give thanks for – our relationship with our pets; our relationship with others and those who care for them; our relationship with those in the third world, and or relationship with God who always wants to draw closer to us and help us with our lives and loves it when we spend time talking to Him.

SUMMER SCHOOL PROJECT SEEKS 10-13 YEAR OLDS FOR GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM CAST
Following the success of Our Day Out: The Musical in 2017, Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is delighted to be running the Summer School project again in 2018 with a brand new professional production of Michelle Magorian’s Goodnight Mister Tom. The project gives young people an exciting opportunity to work either on stage alongside a professional cast (including Roy Hudd as the grumpy but lovable Mr Tom) or behind the scenes with Theatre Royal’s technical and production teams. The Summer School runs from Mon 30 July until Sat 8 Sep, encompassing the whole run of the show (Fri 24 Aug – Sat 8 Sep) and has been opened out to young people aged from 9 to 20 years. We’ve already had the first stage of auditions but we are still looking for talented boys and girls aged 10 to 13 years old who can act and sing to play challenging key roles in the production. William and Zach are evacuated from London to the countryside where they meet Carrie, George and Ginnie, they all go through harrowing experiences but also the joy of forging strong new friendships. The successful applicants will need to be available from Mon 30 July right through the summer and including all of the scheduled performances. The next round of auditions will take place on Monday 4 June from 6.30pm-9pm, if you are interested in applying please contact natalie@theatreroyal.org. The Second World War has just broken out and the life of Tom Oakley (Roy Hudd), an old man in the country, is about to change for the better. Having lived alone for 40 years he reluctantly takes under his wing ten-year-old William, an evacuee from London. As William begins to soften Tom’s seemingly hardened exterior, an unspoken and unbreakable bond is formed. We are grateful to our sponsors Anglia Suspended Ceilings and to Bury Rotary for their bursary support on this production. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office, call 01284 769505, book online at www.theatreroyal.org/shows/goodnight-mr-tom/ or visit the theatre in person.

If you like a good laugh out loud chick flick, then this film is for you! A romantic comedy with a feel good factor! The preview obviously showed the funniest parts, but there were still more to come. The character is a self conscious young woman (Amy Schumer) who bangs her head in the gym whilst trying to get her dream body, when she comes round, she sees another person staring back at her in the mirror, a beautiful slim girl, so her confidence goes through the roof, and changes her life, she bags a boyfriend, a dream job and life is great, but then she loses the ability to see the beautiful person she thought she was and withdraws, not realising that all along she got everything she wanted by looking exactly as she was before, moral being, beauty comes from within! Take note ladies!

DEAD POOL 2 Reviewed by Gemma Procter
15
Anyone who’s seen the original Deadpool movie will know that this isn’t your typical Marvel superhero film, and it’s certainly not for the easily offended! Luckily, I’m not easily offended, and I couldn’t wait to see this movie, hoping it would be as good as the first. And wasn’t disappointed. The plot follows wisecracking mercenary Deadpool as he meets Russell, an angry teenage mutant who lives at an orphanage. When Russell becomes the target of Cable, a genetically enhanced soldier from the future, Deadpool realises that he’ll need some help saving the boy from such a superior enemy. He puts together an ’special’ team featuring Bedlam, Shatterstar, Domino, other powerful mutants and a man called Peter, to protect Russell from Cable and his advanced weaponry. The film is action-packed, exceptionally gory (be warned), and full of bad language and bad taste jokes… but, it’s blinkin’ hilarious! I laughed all the way through. I made the error of leaving the cinema at the end of the film, even though I knew there would be some post-credit scenes, and I’ve since been told there are no less than FIVE post-credit scenes which apparently clear up a lot of things that happen in the movie, so if you can, hang around for those as I think it’ll give you a different take on the film.
